OCC: You called me Zolar instead of Halas :p

When Mew stepped into the way of the Flamethrower, I realized that this fight would cause more damage for us then the other Pokemon. I sighed, "It's not worth it, the Mew will probably just cause a lot of hurt for you Monbrey. Get down and I will just use a Pokedoll."

My Infernape shimmied down the tree and walked toward me sadly. It wanted a fight, but I just couldn't let it take a beating like that. A Legendary Pokemon would just destroy my monkey, who just happens to be weak to psychic type moves. When it reached me it turned its back toward me and sat on the ground playing with some wildflower.

I reach into one of my coat's pockets and pull out a small pink Clefairy doll and toss it in the direction of the eggs and flying mouse. "Let's go guys." I said with a sigh

    Ranger Joe Smith

“Hey Joe,” a friendly voice said down the line. Joe suddenly realized that voice and replied, “Oh hey Jay, how’s it going?” Jay had been one of Joe’s friends for a long time and both of them dating back a long time.

“Not much, I called to ask if you want to take over a run. I have to go back because there is apparently the ice is slowly melting in my gym and the numnuts called workers don’t know how to fix it. Looks like I have to get my hands dirty again.”

Joe laughed and replied, “Sure, Botanic Gardens right?”

“Yeah that’s the place, the trainer is called Hallas. You’ll meet them by the old oak tree. Thanks man for this,” Jay replied.

“No problem, I’ll catch you later,” Joe said and lowered the phone into his pocket. He reached into his bag and withdrew a small red and white Pokeball. He threw the ball into the air and watched as a large bird flew out. Xatu opened up her arms and stared down at Joe. Joe could tell that she was pissed and said, “Don’t worry; I just need you to teleport me to the Oak tree in Botanic Gardens.” Xatu did as she was told and teleported Joe through space and time.

Joe landed on the floor and returned his Xatu. She never liked being out of her Pokeball for a long time. Joe looked forward and noticed a small trainer standing alone. He walked up to the trainer and introduced himself, “Hello, I am Joe Smith your new Ranger.” As he said this he noticed that a small pink egg Pokemon slowly retreated back into the bushes. Joe didn’t know what happened and returned to his conversation. “We can go when you’re ready.”

As the Exeggcute rolled back into the bushes, I heard my ranger talking on the phone. I didn't mind it, but as he continued to walk away from me I became worried. Was he going to abandon me? In a split second, there was a blinding light and a low sci-fi type sound as a male figure and a large Egyptian-like bird appeared out of thin air.

The man held out a Pokeball and returned the Pokemon while introducing himself, “Hello, I am Joe Smith your new Ranger.” I noticed him looking over in the direction in which the eggs were leaving and smiled. “We can go when you’re ready.”

"The name is Halas," I said. Monbrey still sat on the ground playing with the grass, "This is my Infernape, Monbrey and we are ready whenever you are.

"The name is Halas,"The trainer replied, "This is my Infernape, Monbrey and we are ready whenever you are." Joe turned his head to the Infernape playing around and he memories suddenly took him back to when he had his old Infernape. Joe quickly snapped out of his thoughts and lead Halas down a small dirt track.

The sun was shinning and a cool breeze casually drifted by. Joe loved coming to the Gardens because of the weather, it was the only place where the temperature and wind levels were right. They continued to walk down the dirt path, leading through a small wood. The leaves on the trees sheltered the path from the burning sun light. Joe turned around to Halas and said, "So Halas, is there any type of Pokemon you want to catch?"

As soon as Joe said these words, a small honey comb Pokemon suddenly appeared from the bushes. It flew towards the group and started to flutter in front of them. Joe turned to Halas and said, "Do you want to battle this Combee?"

Joe led me down a dirt road leading to a small forest-like area. The Gardens were beautiful and the atmosphere couldn't have been better. We walked in silence until Joe attempted to break the ice, "So Halas, is there any type of Pokemon you want to catch?"

I looked at him for a moment and pondered the question, "I'm not really sure, I would love to get my hands on a Miltank, but I guess any decent Pokemon would work wonders for me. I'm not particularly picky about what Pokemon I use or even capture."

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a little honeycomb fly towards us. This was the Pokemon, Combee. It hovered in front of us for a second and then Joe finally popped the question, "Do you want to battle this Combee?"

This was the one time where my picky-ness did come into play, "Combee's are adorable, but I can't see me ever using one. I feel that it would be best if we left it alone out here where it would actually see the sun every once in a while, but I won't leave it alone so I'll just give it a Pokedoll to keep it company." I pat the Combee on the top of its body and start to pull the pink Clefairy doll out of my pocket and give it to it. Iwalk away from the honeycomb with wings.

Halas replied. She removed a small pink Clefairy doll from her bag and gave it towards the Combee. The Combee looked at the doll and quickly flew away, almost like it was scared of the doll. Joe couldn't complain and watched as the Combee drifted out from sight.

They continued to walk down the path, eventually leaving the forest. After leaving the forest, they found themselves located in a large open field. Joe looked around and noticed that the field was bare and unoccupied. It was strange, Joe had never seen a field empty like this before; normally all the fields were filled with wild Pokemon. Then out of nowhere a small rodent Pokemon appeared out from the bushes. It took a couple of paces forward and stared at the trainers. Joe realised that it was a Minccino, a normal Pokemon and was quiet uncommon around these parts.

Joe turned to Halas and said, "Do you want to battle this Minccino?"

We walked down the path that led out of the forest and into a grassland type area. Joe looked around like something was unusual. Never venturing out to the park before, I didn't notice a thing. The wind made the miles of grass look as if it was shimmering. I looked at Joe who seemed to be focusing on something a little ahead of us. I follow his gaze to see a little chinchilla walk out of the grass.

Joe looked at me and asked, "Do you want to battle this Minccino?"

The Minccino stood tall for being something that was so little. Its ears twitched as if it was hearing something that we could not. Its gray and white fur glistened in the nice sunlight. It had a smile on its face that made it appear quite a bit cuter. Just how small it was made me want to have it. This thing could probably pack a punch.

I pulled out a small device known commonly as the "Pokedex", I pointed it at the small creature to see what I was up against, Minccino, the Chinchilla Pokémon. Minccino loves shiny things and will use its tail as a brush to clean any objects that are dirty. It is the normal type and quite weak to fighting types. Minccino's brush other Minccino's with their tail as a greeting.

"Yes, absolutely. I've never seen anything like this Pokemon before. It's weak to fighting type attacks so Monbrey, you're up!" I said as I threw his red and white sphere a couple feet ahead of me. In a flash of blinding light, my Infernape rose like a champion. "Monbrey, use Bulk Up then when you feel you have build up enough power use your Mach Punch, but try to hit it with multiple attacks to wear it down faster!"

My blazing ape understood the call, it began to take big, deep breaths and its muscles twitched. It had started summon more and more of its incredible strength to increase the power of its next move. Its head shot up and his blue flames glowed brighter than before. There was a wild look in its eye as he charged the chinchilla and full speed. When he was approaching the final distance to the Pokemon, he raise his right fist, which began to glow a deep brown. The light radiated off of the monkey's fist to were it left a trail from which the fist had been just seconds before. If this attack were to work successfully and Monbrey could get off multiple Mach Punches, this could do quite a bit of damage, all I could do was hope.

I was just about to head out to lunch when I received an emergency call across my radio. A new trainer had been left at the Botanical Gardens because his ranger had pressing business. He had been waiting quite a while to my understanding.

Normally I would have teleported there using my Alakazam, but since I didn’t know his exact location I decided using my Charizard to fly there would be best. I finally located him a few minutes after getting to the area.

I was surprised to see him battling a gray skinny mouse-like Pokemon whom I recognized as Minccino, I owned its evolved version. It was a really solid Normal type Pokemon to have, it even rivaled the all powerful Infernape in my opinion.

I got there just in time to see the client Hallas start calling out some attacks to his Infernape. “Monbrey, use Bulk Up, then when you feel you’ve built up enough power use your Mach Punch, but try to hit it with multiple attacks to wear it down faster.”

He was calling out some fairly hefty attacks for his Pokemon, easily enough to hurt the Minccino who was weak to Fighting types. The Infernape closed its eyes, took in deep breaths, and began to focus on the building of its muscles. Slowly, his muscle mass began to increase ever so slowly. The small Wild Pokemon responded by flirting about the Infernape, before ending its small jig with a wink at Infernape.

Infernape was watching the Normal type with a rapt expression, but it seemed to snap out of it and charged the Minccino. Using his Mach Punch, the Infernape narrowed the distance between the two Pokemon practically instantaneously. The Minccino was so startled that it didn’t take time to dodge and was struck repeatedly by Infernape’s fist.

After a few such blows the Infernape bounded away, only to be stopped by a soft singing. I turned and saw that the Minccino was singing to Infernape, trying to put it asleep. The Infernape shook his head, but I slowly saw his eyelids began to droop as the Sing started to take effect on the Pokemon.

“That really sucks,” I said to Hallas. “Luckily for you though, that little Pokemon can’t do much damage and you should wake up soon.”

I watch as my plan begins to unfold. Monbrey begins to run to the chinchilla and begins to swing his fist, but before he could do so Minccino did a wink at him. He staggered a bit, confused by this strange Charm attack. He shakes his head and begins to punch on the small mammal. Everything seems to be going in my favor now. Monbrey, feeling triumphant about his sucessful strike on Minccino completely forgot to cover himself against attacks. The sweet, lullaby type song that came out of Mincinno's mouth was extremely relaxing. I begin to yawn and so does Monbrey before he completely passes out.

A wind blows my hair forward and I hear a slight roar. Must be the wind carrying another Pokemon's cry from far away. I think, Ok, so, Monbrey is asleep. He is my best shot at weakening the Minccino and getting the first capture for me in the park. Let's suppose he wakes up now, and preforms a good Mach Punch against this, or even Close Combat. How much could that harm the little guy? If I try to get a Flare Blitz or Flamethrowers off it could spark a fire which would be terrible. The trees here look watered enough, but you can never be too safe. I kick the grass beneath me and stroke my hair. I only have a few seconds to think of a plan to take down the furry menace and it better be a good one.

The lush, green forest around me seems to grow increasingly louder making it hard for me to think. Hundreds of thousands of outcomes roll through my head as I struggle to think of a plan for such a simple situation.

I curse under my breath for this terrible inconvenience. Distracted by the action that was going on, I didn't even see the new ranger come to lead me through this place. “That really sucks,” the ranger says, “Luckily for you though, that little Pokemon can’t do much damage and you should wake up soon.”

"Yeah, hopefully he will wake up, but he is my best bet to wearing Minccino down because of his superior strength and super effective attacks. Gah, Monbrey, if you can hear me, wake the hell up! You gotta get up and keep fighting! This is no place for a nap!" I say in an escalated tone, "You have to get up and attack. A Calm Mind and Fire Spin would be great right now!"

My shoulders slump thinking of the danger I am putting my ranger, my Infernape and myself in for using such a suggestive move combo in this situation, but my options are truly limited. I stare at the battlefield, waiting to see what happens next.

You gotta get up and attack. A Calm Mind and Fire Spin would be great right now!” Hallas shouted to his Pokemon, trying to get it to wake up.

Sadly the fire Monkey continued to sleep soundly, oblivious to his master’s commands. Which wasn’t surprising since he was asleep, but it could never hurt to try, and we all knew that.

The Minccino took this prime opportunity to attack the defenseless Infernape. It rushed up to the sleeping form of Infernape and began to smack Infernape with its broom-like tail. Minccino smacked Infernape five times before bounding back to a safe distance. Despite the sudden attack Infernape didn’t move an inch.

“You’re fortunate Infernape used Bulk Up and boosted his defense, otherwise that Tail Slap would have done more damage,” I said to Hallas.

Despite Infernape being asleep, I was confident that Hallas still had the battle under control. Minccino could learn only two attacks that would be super effective against Infernape. One was a Dig, which it would have to learn through TM or by another wild Pokemon. The second was Aqua Tail, a breeder move, which meant one of its parents had to know the move for it to be passed along. So, in that regard, Hallas was doing good.

My strategy doesn't start off too well with Monbrey staying asleep, even though I nearly shouted my lungs out at him. The Minccino decided to make the best out of this situation and attack my inflamed ape. It ran up to him, turned around and smacked the Pokemon hard with its long, bushy, white-and-gray tail. I counted five hits as the small rodent-like Pokemon ran away, not trying to push its luck. Luckily for it, Monbrey slept through all the hits. Once again, I am in a predicament. Had Monbrey gotten up, he wouldn't be as damaged as he is right now.

Dammit, I think, Even with my defense up, Monbrey still can't do much to fight back. I just wish that he gets up this next round or it could be downhill from there. What if he does get up now? Should I try to use my same move or switch it up and go on the offensive side of things? With his Special Attack boosted, Fire Spin could do a lot more and it will continuously do damage as the battle progresses. Should I think long run, or in the moment? I guess my best bet would to think long run at this time of the battle.

I look at the bright, blue sky and see a few clouds that look like Mareep. I shouldn't get distracted while a battle is going on, but I need to make the decision a right one. My hair flows into my eyes and I flip my head so that they land on top. Suddenly, my senses sharpen and I notice every little detail on the battlefield. A worm just squirmed out of the ground about a yard away from me. A small bird is eyeing that same worm for a snack. Bugs are making noise in the forest and the trees sway in the wind. I focus again at the battle. It's now or never for Monbrey to wake up.

Where he lay appears to be a soft, lush place that would be perfect for a mid-afternoon nap in the wilderness, but this is no time for a nap. This little Minccino would take advantage of him sleeping and it won't regret it. As far as I knew, Minccino had no moves that would do too much damage against the flaming monkey, but then again, I've never faced one in battle before.

"Come on Mon, I know you are in there. Just wake up already," my voice beginning to sound agitated, "You have to go and make a move for yourself, not just lay there and sleep the whole battle! Wake up and use a Calm Mind and then Fire Spin."

I know he can hear me, but will he wake up and respond? The odds seemed against it, but then again, they usually seemed to be against me.

“Come on, Mon’. I know you are in there. Just wake up already!” Hallas continued to speak to his sleeping Pokemon. “You have to go and make a move for yourself, not just lay there and sleep the whole battle! Wake up and use a Calm Mind and then Fire Spin.”

As if on cue, the eyelids of Infernape shot open, revealing the small black eyes that were hidden within. The Infernape snarled at the Minccino and shot to its feet in a flash. It took a moment for his master’s command to register through his sleep-fogged brain. Soon as he did, his features settled into a serene mask and he closed his eyes in concentration, a telltale sign of a Pokemon using Calm Mind.

Calm Mind was a move that raised the special defense and attack of the user Pokemon, making it very valuable to certain Pokemon. Some Pokemon with a Calm Mind could almost knock out any Pokemon known. Togekiss and Alakazam were two Pokemon that sprang to my mind. Infernape wasn’t that deadly with a Calm Mind, but it wasn’t something you wanted to have on your hands either.

The Cinccino stared at the Infernape apprehensively, but it seemed to swallow its fear. It inhaled deeply, puffing out its small chest. Then, to my surprise, The Pokemon screamed, loudly. I was forced to cover my eyes from the noise, and that only helped a tiny amount. The little Pokemon had busted out one of its more powerful moves, Hyper Voice.

After a few seconds the voice died down, allowing Infernape to fire back with an attack of his own. His fire-mane grew hotter and bigger, and a moment later he spun about, creating a wall of flame. He did this a couple of times until he had built up a small twister of flame. He aimed the twister at Minccino and let it spin towards the Normal Pokemon.

The mouse-like Pokemon tried to dodge, but wasn’t fast enough and found itself trapped in all sides by the flame. The Pokemon responded by splitting into five copies of itself, it had Double Team.

“Be careful not to let that fire burn any parts of the Garden I warned Hallas, fires here could be dangerous.

I stood silently as my large monkey woke up. Its eyes were a strikingly dark color. It was pissed. Somehow, he found his quiet place and closed his eyes. I was glad to see that I didn't have to repeat my plan once again. The flames on his body grew smaller as all of his focus went into channeling his energy and relaxing. The idea was for him to use a Calm Mind move, then with the boosted Special Attack and Defense to use a increased power Fire Spin to damage and trap the Minccino.

His eyes shoot open and his mind focuses on the battle. It looks as if he is about to start his next attack when Minccino opens its small mouth and lets loose an ear-drum-exploding scream. I double over in pain along with my ranger. Monbrey seemed to be hurt by the Hyper Voice attack, but he didn't seem to be that phased. His eye twitches and his fiery mane grows in size and begins to swirl around him. His pupils narrow as if he has a targeting system within him and it is aiming at the chinchilla. I could feel the heat radiating off of the mane. I begin to sweat, it must be pushing 1,000°F on his inferno of a mane.

After a few rotations of his mane, Monbrey launched his increased power Fire Spin. The Minccino attempted to dive out of the way, but the monkey predicted the evasion and hit the Pokemon dead on the chest. The vortex of flames swallowed the small creature and began to deal its damage.

“Be careful not to let that fire burn any parts of the Garden," my ranger cautions me, "Fires here could be dangerous."

Just as I thought things were going my way, Minccino began to shake. Wait, it wasn't shaking, it was transforming into two different Pokemon. I knew this move too well. It was a Double Team skill, it increased the user's evasion. This could be problematic for me. I decide to take it in stride. Monbrey and I had a mental link of some sorts, well not a mental link. It's more of a connection, he can sort of predict what my moves will be after being with me for so long.

"Mon, we've been in this situation before," I say to my Pokemon, "Just take your time, focus and figure out which Minccino is the real one. Look closely, we can't afford a miss here. When you discover the real one, I need you to be as strategic as possible and Bulk Up to return your Attack stat to normal. Then when you feel it is satisfactory, Go full force with a Mach Punch, you can't show much resistance on this one. Try your best to keep it away from the trees. We can't afford a forest fire."

I stand back because of the heat and see my Infernape staring at each copy of the chinchilla trying to figure out which was real and which were the doppelgangers.

Hallas saw the Minccino use Double Team, but it didn’t phase him in the slightest. “Mon, we’ve been in this situation before. Just take your time, focus and figure out which Minccino is the real one.” Hallas stated, trying to focus his Pokemon and make him think. “Look closely, we can’t afford a miss here. When you discover the real one, I need you to be as strategic as possible and Bulk Up to return your attack stat to normal. Then, when you feel it is satisfactory, go full force with a Mach Punch, you can’t show much resistance on this one. Try your best to keep it away from the trees. We can’t afford a forest fire.”

The Minccino must have agreed with the last sentence because it began to dance about, in a very fluid and graceful manner. My mind immediately went through a couple of possibilities of what it might be and I settled on Rain Dance or Sunny Day. I discarded Sunny Day because it would only increase Minccino’s trouble, so chances were it was Rain Dance.

That was confirmed a few moments later when thick clouds materialized overhead and large drops of rain began to fall. The sudden rain quickly doused the Fire Spin, freeing Minccino from its fiery prison.

While Minccino was using Rain Dance the Infernape had taken the free time to get in the Bulk Up attack Hallas had ordered. Increasing his attack and defense once more, not a good thing for the Minccino.

Both Pokemon eyed each other weary as each waited for the next move. Infernape moved first. Infernape scattered rain about as it ran toward the smaller Normal Pokemon. Usually it would be hard to see a Pokemon using a move like Mach Punch, but the displaced rain made the Pokemon easy to spot.

Minccino saw the Infernape coming and yelled. Quick as can be a jolt of lightening flashed down from the clouds and struck Infernape as it moved forward. I saw Infernape cringe from the move, but due to Calm Mind it didn’t hurt as much as it could have.

Infernape punched Minccino and sent the small Pokemon hurling back a few feet, its feet sending up spurts of mud. The Minccino rose to its feet and stumbled out, clearly dazed from the attack.

“This is your chance to capture it,” I said to Hallas. “Another attack and it’s going to faint.”

While Monbrey uses his Bulk Up attack again, Minccino used this time to dance around in a large circle. I hear thunder in the distance and recognize the move as a Rain Dance. Water droplets begin to fall as the Fire Spin that I had been wise to use fades and hisses into nothingness.

Monbrey lets out a loud grunt, signifying that he has built up a good amount of power and is ready to go on the offensive once more. He begins to run at Minccino and brings his fist back. In an instant, lightning comes falling from the sky and strikes my Infernape. He staggers, not knowing what caused the attack. He shakes his head and returns to charging at the small gray-and-white Pokemon. The fist connects with the chest of the chinchilla and it gets sent back into a puddle of mud. It can't seem to focus, clearly dazed from the powerful attack.

“This is your chance to capture it. Another attack and it’s going to faint.” My ranger says to me.

"So it seems," I say grabbing a Parkball from my belt, "Monbrey, back off and be ready for anything. Time to come home Minccino!" I whip the ball at the small creature, hoping that I won't have to use two Parkballs on this small thing.

“So it seems,” Hallas responded, reaching for his belt where his empty Parkball were located. “Monbrey, back off and be ready for anything. Time to come home Minccino!”

He took careful aim at the tired Normal Pokemon and flung the ball at it. The Minccino saw it coming, but was too tired to bat it away. The result was that it was sucked inside the capture device. The ball fell to the ground with a soft thud and began to wiggle. After a couple of rocking motions it stayed still and sounded off with the capture noise.

“Congrats,” I said to Hallas, walking over and taking the Pokemon. I dropped it in my bag and turned to Hallas. “Take this opportunity to rest or do whatever you want before we move on.”

The Parkball hurtled towards the small creature and struck the small Pokemon. It seemed to be aware of it, but did nothing to avoid it. A dazzling red light absorbed the Minccino and the ball fell to the ground. The capture device wiggled once. Twice. Thrice. A loud 'ping' sounded from it and I knew it was a successful capture.

“Congrats,” My ranger says to me as he grabs the Parkball and drops it into his bag, “Take this opportunity to rest or do whatever you want before we move on.”

"I think we are all set already. Good job, Monbrey. Take a nice rest," I say holding a Pokeball marked with the letter 'M' surrounded by fire. The fire ape is turned into a bright red light and then disappears into the blood-red sphere. "On that note, let's continue shall we?"

“I think we are all set already,” Hallas responded immediately. “Good job, Monbrey. Take a rest,” he said, turning to his Pokemon and recalling it. “On that note, let’s continue shall we?”

“I’m always ready to get moving,” I said. “I have a good feeling about this run.”

With everything ready we started to get a move on once more. We were in the heavily wooded area of the Gardens, and that was fine by me, but it was my experience that the more popular Pokemon tended to stick near the fruit gardens or the grass plains. I was leading Hallas towards the plains when I thought I saw some movement by a bush.

I stopped and move forward, trying to determine if it was a Pokemon trying to hide or just a bush rustling in the wind. Once I got closer I realized it was a small Pokemon hiding in a bush. I saw the spots and knew what it was immediately.

“A Shroomish is over there. They are a great Pokemon once they evolve into Breloom. You want it?”

“I’m always ready to get moving. I have a good feeling about this run.” My ranger spoke to me. With that said, we went on the move again.

The scenery transitioned into a thick wooded area. We were headed down what seems to be a well used path. Suddenly, my ranger stops and stares at a bush. It was shaking, no doubt, but it was hard to tell if it was a Pokemon or just the wind. As we observed more, I saw a small green body appear out of the brush. The ranger moved forward to observe it up close.

“A Shroomish is over there. They are a great Pokemon once they evolve into Breloom. You want it?” He said walking back towards me.

"Nah," I reply after a moment of thinking. "Breloom is really good, but I don't need one right now. Let's keep moving, if need be I can just give it a Pokedoll and we can be on our way."

“Nah, Breloom is really good, but I don’t need one right now. Let’s keep moving, if need be I can just give it a Pokedoll and we can be on our way.”

His response really surprised me. Breloom was a really good Pokemon to have for a bunch of reasons. Most people who ran into a Shroomish either caught it if they didn’t have it, or caught it anyway and traded it because it was in such high demand. Just recently I had done the same with a Horsea, I got the Horsea and traded away a Zorua. Some Pokemon could fetch high prices on the market.

It was his choice though. “Come on then, I don’t think it wants to bother us anyway. I’m sure if we just walk past it will leave us alone.”

Sure enough, I walked past the Grass type and it didn’t even stir. It was either sleeping or just wasn’t interested, either way, that was a good thing for Hallas since he didn't’ want one in the first place.

We had only just passed the Shroomish when a long Pokemon darted across out path and scurried up a tree. The brown rings around its sleek body told me that the Pokemon was a Linoone, a relative common and weak species. It did have the advantage of good speed and knowing Belly Drum, but most trainer didn’t want one.

“You want to go after that Pokemon?” I asked the trainer.
