Latios did an aerial backflip after Sela released a Heal Pulse to restore whatever damage had been done by Flutter’s Psychic; the large moth landed on my shoulder and made an apologetic noise. The two Pokemon had a brief discussion, after which Latios looked amused and Flutter relieved. I assumed the Eon Pokemon had forgiven Flutter for her somewhat rash attack; after all, she was a Poison Pokemon, so mental probing was something she had an instinctual dislike for.

Afterward, Latios noticed that Siless had withdrawn a camera and drew closer to inspect it. He then let out a soft trill, retreating a few feet before executing a few tight spins. After a moment he stopped, once more levitating vertically, head cocked in a quizzical expression. I chuckled a bit; either Latios was simply humoring us, or he was striking a pose. Either way, he didn’t seem to mind the idea of being photographed, and indeed was staying in one spot as if to make it easier to take a clear picture.

At that moment I noticed a small furry creature trundling through the grass under Latios. I frowned and squinted a bit, but was unable to make out what the creature was. After a second it paused, and for the briefest instant an ebony head flashed out of the long grass. It vanished in the next moment, but I’d gotten enough of a look to see what it was.

A Zorua was moving through the grass, most likely trying to avoid being noticed by the group around it. Judging from how stealthy it was being, it was most likely a juvenile that was going off on its own to establish its own territory. It was old enough to fend for itself and probably hold an Illusion fairly well, but still young enough to where a solid Illusion took too much energy to hold long enough for it to be useful.

The only problem with trying to be sneaky was the grass was obscuring its view, so it had to keep peeking over the grass to see exactly where it was going. It didn’t seem to realize I’d spotted it; I shot Siless a look, not sure if he’d seen it or not as its head popped into view, then ducked back down a split moment later. I wouldn’t distract him from Latios unless Zorua was in danger of getting away; for now it was relatively easy to keep track of the parting grass.

Latios seemed more than happy to pose for a picture, and I quickly snapped the picture to take up as little of its time as necessary; if it wanted to hang out with us, I was all for it, but I had no clue if it wanted to be somewhere else and we were holding it up. If it decided to stay, I would ask if it knew where any Gothita were, but I had no clue if Latios wanted to stay or not, and honestly I had no way to tell. I was already gracious enough for the time (and lack of psychic maiming) granted to us by the legendary, and I hardly wanted to press my luck asking for its help with a task that would probably seem menial to something of its sheer power.

Sela moved slowly in Latios's direction. It seemed she spotted something, and when I looked at Sara, it practically confirmed that as she was focused on the grass under the floating Legendary Pokémon. Sela appeared to talk to Latios, somewhat through movement though probably more through telepathy, that something was under it, and to not surprise whatever it was. I caught only part of the message, but got the general idea; I decided to try to get at least a little more of a conversation going so whatever it was, Sela could sneak up on it without it worrying.

"We were looking for a Gothita when you showed up." Here, I motioned to the Poképlayer, thinking that Latios would remember the cry well. "We were going to try to find one that was willing to join our team. Would you know of any?"

Latios hummed a little as he completely ignored the parting brass beneath him, though it didn’t go unnoticed that Sela was steadily, albeit carefully, sneaking up on the little fox slinking about. Siless waved to the PokePlayer and inquired if Latios may know of a Gothita willing to leave the Valley. For a moment the Psychic Dragon pondered, idly spinning and twisting through the air before finally stopping and pointing to a series of caves to the east. I wasn’t sure if maybe he’d called out telepathically and waited for an answer, or if he was making an educated guess, but either way he continued to hover about. It seemed as if, for now at least, the Eon Pokemon would be hanging around.

I didn’t have to wonder about it for long, because at that moment Zorua popped its head out of the grass again. Whether it sensed Sela approaching or glanced in her direction out of dumb luck, it looked over and saw her coming towards it when she was a good four or five feet away from it. Instantly the little ebony-furred fox let out a yowl, but it ended a moment later. The cry was one I’d heard plenty of times from the litter of Zorua my Zoroark had whelped several months ago; it was one of a Zorua seeking the aid of its mother or father, a plea for help. The fact that this little one had started to cry out, then halted just as suddenly, confirmed my suspicion that it was a juvenile striking out on its own.

Much to my surprise, Zorua didn’t try to run away after noticing Sela, but instead pulled itself to its full height, as if trying to intimidate the larger Gardevoir. It even started to growl, a sign that it was more than willing to battle. I smiled a little, thinking about Trickster’s pups. In a few more months they were going to be released into the Park, something wished by Trickster and Dagger, my Floatzel and the litter’s father. One day soon I might be witnessing something like this with a pup I’d helped raise.

“Well, it looks like Zorua’s sticking around. Feel up for a battle?” I asked Siless, wondering if he was interested in the fox. Zoroark were relatively rare and most people jumped at the chance to catch one, or one of their unevolved brethren.

OOC:Male Zorua pls. @Dog of Hellsing

While I would have liked a Zorua, it was highly defensive and seemed scared. If we could calm it down and explain that we would like it to join our team, we could change the entire nature of this battle. As it was, Zorua was ready to fight for its life, making it far more likely that it makes rash decisions that could endanger both itself and Sela. If Zorua knew that we only wanted it to join us, then even if it didn't want to come it would know we didn't want to give it any lasting damage, and if it did then the battle would become one of proving ourselves to each other, not of defending oneself to the end.

The Zorua was clearly scared; it wasn't going to listen to anything unless it was calmed down. Sela and I had no clue what, if anything, would work, but the Zorua seemed young. A calm, motherly approach would probably be best, but I had no clue how to act as one; Sela seemed to have better ideas on the subject, though she still had no real experience taking on a motherly role for anything. We had to do our best to wing it.

"Sela, try to disarm the situation with a Charm so we can explain ourselves." We didn't want to fight an opponent that was fearful of us. Even if we took a massive tactical disadvantage by having Sela open herself up to attack while trying to calm down Zorua, it would be worth it if it was calmed even a small bit. I had confidence Sela could handle herself even with a couple strong blows, and I was sure we would both consider it well worth it if Zorua wasn't as distressed as it was right now.

My Gardevoir kneeled down in front of the Zorua, drastically cutting the height difference between the two Pokémon. She held her hand out to the Dark-type, and I heard her start to speak in a hushed tone; whether this was a part of her Charm, or her explaining us to Zorua, I had no way of telling from this distance. All I could do was hope Zorua accepted whatever it was.

Siless decided to try and calm Zorua down before attempting to battle it, which was a good idea considering how upset the little fox was. Most people would have jumped into battle without the thought of trying to soothe their opponent, so I was rather impressed with Siless’s course of action.

Latios watched the whole exchange with a curious expression while, rising about ten feet into the air in what was most likely an effort to avoid getting caught by any stray attacks that might get fired. He slowly circled above our heads as Sela knelt down, offering a hand towards the now-growling Zorua as Siless suggested the Gardevoir try a Charm to calm the young Pokemon before her.

Smiling faintly, Sela began to emanate a soothing aura that, in most cases, would entrance other Pokemon if they were male and cause them to be less inclined to attack, making their strength decrease a fair amount. In this case, though, Sela held back most of the effect of the move, so the soothing aura didn’t reach the intensity it normally would if the Gardevoir were engaged in a serious battle.

After a moment, Zorua hesitantly lowered his lips over bared fangs, sniffing the air cautiously and never taking his eyes off Sela. Slowly, his raised hackles lowered and his defensive pose relaxed into a more natural one. By no means was he completely lulled, though; he was watching Sela with an intense alertness. When he cocked his head and titled his ears forward, it became obvious that Sela was talking to him, though I could hear nothing being said. Eventually, whatever she’d been telling him must have had a positive impact, because his eyes went out of focus for a second before he gave a slow, single inclination of his head. He then swished his tail and crouched, rump high in the air. To most untrained people this might look like what was known as a “play bow”, a canine’s signal of showing others that it wanted to romp. In this case, though, there was no anxious wiggling or impatient little yips; this was the crouch of a Pokemon ready to fight.

“It seems whatever Sela said convinced Zorua,” I commented. “You might want to give Sela a command soon; Zorua doesn’t look like he’s going to wait much longer before starting this himself.”

Zorua was calmed down and ready for a sporting fight, so our first task was accomplished. Now we had to deal with the hard part; fighting a Dark-type with Pokémon that have large disadvantages against them. Sela's most natural attacks were almost worthless in terms of the damage they could do to Zorua, while Zorua's attacks could do far more to the Psychic-type. Missy's Ghost-type attacks would do a bit more damage, but she was weak as well; that small bit of damage wasn't exactly worth taking Sela out of the situation she handled perfectly (and possibly jarring the young Zorua at the same time).

First, we needed to form a tactical advantage. In a straight up fight, Sela's best attack was inaccurate, and Zorua's Dark-type attacks could very well win it for the young Pokémon; instead, we had to out-trick the Tricky Fox Pokémon.

"Sela, back up and Taunt Zorua into attacking, then cover yourself with Reflect and Psychic!" I heard whispers escape my Gardevoir's lips as she took her position in the battlefield; to everyone but her target, it was meaningless gibberish, but to Zorua, it was no doubt what Sela judged to be the perfect mix of agitation and encouragement to draw the Dark-Type into attacking her shield.

The goal here was to exhaust Zorua. Most of the moves that it learns naturally are physical, and while Psychic was incredibly weak when striking Dark-types, it still had uses; in this case, it would be a blunt force shield reinforcing Reflect and hopefully bouncing Zorua back when it strikes. There was still a special move that was certainly in Zorua's grasp, as well as others it could possibly have picked up through other means in its life, but Sela's defenses tended strongly towards the Special end, and at this point, I had to consider the Physical moveset of Zorua more of a threat.

Sela's hands began to glow blue with the energies of Psychic as she prepared for the act of forming her dual-layered shield. Reflect was far more subtle; when formed, it did shine, but it was fully transparent as well. With this strategy, Reflect couldn't be held, as half of its potential power went into bolstering Psychic to aid in fighting off the Dark-type; I wasn't worried about the shield being significantly weakened, as in normal battles most of the power of moves like Reflect went into their staying power. Instead, Reflect would stop after a single blow, allowing Sela to cover herself in a shield of kinetic mental energy against the significantly weakened attack. I could only hope that the transfer of Psychic energies into kinetic energies would be enough to affect the Dark-type practically immune to the former.

Listening to Sela's taunt, I could tell there was a small bit of distress in her whispers. I wasn't sure if the Zorua could pick up on it, but the message was intended to be so I could tell. It was different than the standard discomfort, almost fear, that tended to occur with Psychic-types being exposed to Dark-types. She seemed more irritated, and a quick burst of emotion sent in my direction confirmed that she felt she wasn't reaching her full potential. She hadn't complained of this problem before, so I could only assume that this battle was under special circumstances. I then remembered something from researching my own Pokémon's capabilities; Trace couldn't copy certain abilities, Zorua's Illusion being one of them. A Trace that couldn't work provided no inherent disadvantages to combat, but it was a distraction. I had an idea of how to use it to our advantage, but first I had to see if we could stop Zorua's attack; if it could break through Sela's defenses, we would have to switch to a full-on offensive instead to force it back.

I watched as Sela fluidly got to her feet and moved away from Zorua, implement a Taunt to prevent Zorua from using any of his status moves like Imprison or a Taunt of his own. For a moment Zorua simply stared at Sela, then snorted and jumped forward. His small frame meant he was quick and hard to keep track of as he darted back and forth; Sela, though, remained calm and focused on her Reflect. It shimmered into existence after a few moments, and a barely-visible lavender glow signaled that the Gardevoir was carrying out her command of backing the shield’s protective aspects with her Psychic.

When Zorua noticed Sela wasn’t moving to attack, the little fox decided to take advantage of the situation. Clearly not being very skilled in battle yet, he either hadn’t noticed the Reflect go up or simply didn’t care, because he charged head-on towards Sela from the front before gathering himself together and leaping at her. He raised his forepaws and gave a howl as he careened through the air…

…only to smack into the Reflect a moment later. The shield would normally have only weakened the strength of a physical attack by slowing the attack and cutting the momentum behind it, but thanks to it being bolstered by Sela’s Psychic, it acted more like a Protect. Zorua literally bounced off the intangible shield with a startled yelp, landing in the grass as the barrier wavered and then vanished. Growling, Zorua got to his paws and narrowed his bright blue eyes at the Gardevoir before him, then suddenly vanished from view.

Before anyone could wonder if perhaps the little fox had run off, I noticed movement from behind Sela. Almost in the same moment Zorua came flying out of the larger Pokemon’s shadow, one shoulder thrown forward and aimed at the Gardevoir’s head. If Siless didn’t act fast and Sela faster, she was about to take what looked like a particularly powerful Faint Attack to the skull.

I watched the fox Pokémon bounce off of the Reflect, and it looked as if the resulting tumble in the grass took some of the wind out of it. Still, it was almost instantly that Zorua was back up and striking, popping out of Sela's shadow and charging at her head. Such a blow would be horridly damaging, and blocking simply wasn't an option at that range with how unprepared for the blow we were. We had to get out of range.

"Sela, Teleport backwards!" Being on the other end of the attack would keep Zorua from making contact, and avoiding a blow was always better than mitigating the damage of a successful attack. Teleport was Sela's most natural escape mechanism (she had known it ever since hatching), and there was no doubt it was the quickest way to put distance between her and her opponent. Whether Zorua was fast enough to catch up before she disappeared was left to be seen.

"Follow up with a Skill Swap, and guide a Thunderbolt along the swap!" Zorua had made two strikes at us, and the most we had done was send it tumbling away. While that did more damage than what it has done to us so far, we had to get a hit on Zorua to exhaust it faster, or else we would risk the battle being long and drawn out.

Skill Swap would remove the distraction of an unsuccessful Trace from Sela; Trace would be given to Zorua instead, while Sela would take the powerful Illusion. Not only would we deprive Zorua of its own power, but Sela could change form, making herself appear larger or smaller, or perhaps more intimidating. There were millions of possibilities for use of Illusion, and for the most part we could get some sort of advantage by using it, most likely by forcing Zorua to misjudge its own attacks. Thunderbolt was simply meant to be an accurate follow-up attack, as we needed some attack going at this point in the battle. Focus Blast was much stronger against this opponent, but it was highly inaccurate and Zorua was quick in its youth, so it would likely miss, while our usual move Psychic would still do just about nothing. Thunderbolt had far better accuracy than Focus Blast, yet more effective power than Psychic. It was a good move to start a small offensive while we continue to push for a huge tactical advantage.

Sela reacted as soon as Siless was done speaking, but having to wait for her Trainer’s commands had cost precious seconds. Just as she Teleported, Zorua’s shoulder made contact. When the Gardevoir reappeared a moment later, she stumbled forward a little as Zorua was tossed away, the momentum of his attack having become distorted because of the warp in space around the two Pokemon at the moment of impact. Zorua landed in a stunned heap while Sela had to take a few moments to collect herself.

The two Pokemon seemed to get their wits back at roughly the same time; Zorua stood with a flick of his tail and Sela turned, lifting her right arm and pointing at the little fox she was battling. Zorua blinked, taken aback by Sela’s actions, and that was all the time the Gardevoir needed. A whip of electric blue psionic energy lashed out of Sela’s hand, snapping through the air with a faint hiss and snaking around Zorua’s waist. The moment it touched his body, the whip pulsed a bright red, then vanished from sight. Not at all certain of what had just happened and apparently not wanting to give Sela any chance to unleash another surprise attack, Zorua opened his muzzle, gathering energy behind his tiny fangs. It was clear that the Skill Swap had left him shaken as he fired his Shadow Ball sooner than he should have, instead of waiting a few seconds for the attack to gain strength.

At the same time Zorua let his attack fly, Sela flicked her wrist and hastily drew static electricity in the air to her palm, gathering a considerable amount into a crackling ball of bluish-yellow electricity. She then flicked her wrist again, sending the Thunderbolt flying along the remaining energy of her Skill Swap. The beam of electricity struck the Shadow Ball dead-center, and the collision of energy caused the Thunderbolt to expand; bits of it then haphazardly broke from the main attack and sliced through the Shadow Ball before fizzling out of existence.

This broke the Shadow Ball into several smaller spheres; most of them flew harmlessly into the ground or sky, but a few hit Sela in her chest and right shoulder. Enduring the hit without showing how much pain she was in Sela lowered her arm and watched as her weakened Thunderbolt continued on its path, striking Zorua right between his eyes. With another yelp the fox was knocked onto his back, where he twitched for a moment as the electricity worked through his body, making his muscles temporarily seize up.

Zorua got in a small hit with an uncharged Shadow Ball, but it was weakened even further through a collision with Thunderbolt, and Sela managed to keep her composure through the blow. Zorua, however, involuntarily twitched from the electricity from Thunderbolt; while it didn't seem to be a full paralysis, it was a good enough stun that we could press an attack without worrying about a large counter.

"Sela, use Illusion to make yourself look like a Roserade, and play the part. Use your Magical Leaf to send a Toxic attack over to Zorua!" I was going for a bit of a placebo effect here; even if the low amount of Toxic that could possibly be put on the leaves was able to take hold, Zorua would believe it to be far more potent simply coming from a Poison-type like Roserade (even though it would already know it's truly a Gardevoir it's fighting; I was going off of the assumption that just the combined image of the Pokémon and attack would work). If Toxic didn't work, but Magical Leaf still got a strike in, Zorua's own mind could trick it into thinking it's poisoned and sap it of its bodily energy. Magical Leaf itself was extremely accurate, and even though it was slightly weaker than other moves we had available to us, it fit our needs perfectly; the leaves could transfer the poisons of Toxic, and they played perfectly to the role of an attack by a Roserade.

A dark flame mimicking Zorua's natural power enveloped Sela as her size and shape began to morph into her desired form. Her entire body turned various shades of green as she shrunk, with her head being covered with a white, cottony tuft of "hair". Her arms formed red and blue bouquets, while her skirt reached up her back and formed a leafy cape. It wasn't long before Sela had formed the perfect image of a Roserade, and it wasn't surprising; she was good friends with the Roserade on my team, so she had the perfect model to work off of.

Sela launched a flurry of multicolored leaves from her newly formed bouquets and held them in the air around her to perfect her aim prior to her attack. As the leaves floated, poison dripped off a few of them. It was nowhere near as potent as an actual Roserade's poisons, but Zorua didn't need to know that. Not until we could teach it similar techniques, at least. All at once, the leaves turned, pointed to Zorua, and launched themselves. I watched intently, trying to pick out exactly how Zorua would respond to this onslaught.

Zorua was slow in getting back to his paws; by the time he actually got up, Sela had made use of her newly-acquired Illusion to take on the guise of a Roserade. On top of that, she had readied a Toxic-coated Magical Leaf, which was sent speeding towards Zorua as he shook his head and regained his wits.

Because Zorua had still been on the ground when the Magical Leaf had been used, most of the leaves struck the ground between his paws, their aim now lower than Zorua. However, some of the leaves nicked the young Pokemon’s paws, and in shock he jumped backwards with a yowl. He then glared at Sela, only to blink in confusion upon seeing a Roserade instead of a Gardevoir. He looked around, then faced Sela again. It was clear he was confused; he’d been stunned by the Thunderbolt and likely hadn’t realized that Sela had been ordered to alter her appearance. Now facing a completely different Pokemon, the little fox was bemused and uncertain.

However, his surprise didn’t last long. Glaring at what he must have seen as a new foe, the young Pokemon flung his head back and let out a shrill howl. As he did, Dark energy started to emanate from his body, pooling underneath him like an inky shadow. Then, Zorua abruptly ceased howling and dropped his head, slashing a paw through the air. The gathered Dark energy under him shot forward, rising up from the ground and spreading itself into a large sheet that bore down on Sela with an impressive amount of speed.

After unleashing his attack, though, Zorua blinked several times before sitting down, looking a bit ill. His ears drooped a little and he looked completely confused by the effects of the Toxic. It seemed even though most of the leaves had missed, one or two coated with the powerful poison had hit home and transferred the toxin to Zorua.

This trainer was pretty confident seeing as she had her Pokeball out and tossing it gingerly up and down as she waited for the right moment. Ripper was a speedy guy but his Special attack left a lot to be desired. Maybe when it was a Scizor the Air Slash attack could do more damage seeing as it was a flying type, but Scizor gave that up for a Steel typing. Still, it was fairly powerful and Saundra didn't want to knock the Sableye out at all for that matter. The claws of Ripper slammed down and made an amazing slipstream that jutted forward and slammed into the Sableye, knocking her into the ground with a hard impact. The sudden crack was enough to make her jolt but slamming into her and causing her to flinch. She raised her head and groaned, standing up but staggering from the left and the right. Kiryu was watching diligently to see if there was an opening for Saundra to throw her Pokeball. Considering that the Sableye was out low health as it is, now would be a good time. Saki was matching behind his leg, examining the battle closely so she could combat her weak points against the dreaded ghost types.

I caught the Park Ball one last time as Sableye was struck by Ripper’s Air Slash and knocked over by it. For a moment she was stunned by the blow; luck was on my side, it seemed, as the Pokemon had Flinched when the attack hit. It too her a few moments to get up, and when she finally managed it, she staggered around drunkenly. There would be no better time to try catching her, so I took aim and let the Park Ball in my hand fly. I doubted the Pokemon would recover before the Ball struck her, but Ghosts were tricky, so I remained alert as the Park Ball closed in on its target. If Sableye somehow dodged the Ball or broke out, I need to be ready to react.

Night Daze was the Zorua evolutionary line's signature move; it took the form of a powerful dark shockwave that distorted the target's perception and covered their vision in a dark fog. It was only slightly less accurate than a move such as Thunderbolt, but instead it had the ability to make the target's moves even more inaccurate than what Night Daze was. Zorua's move was pretty much all-purpose; Night Daze had a higher than average attack power, bolstered more by Zorua's affinity for Dark-type attacks, and it had a high chance of decreasing the opponent's accuracy for the battle, aiding in Zorua's defense as well.

The wave of dark energy was too quick to be able to avoid normally. Teleport was an option, but that would break the illusion of battling a Roserade, and after the first Teleport, Zorua was probably better prepared to deal with a second, even after switching its mindset back to fighting a Gardevoir instead of a Roserade. We also had a more universal move available for use in defending against Night Daze: the powerful TM move Protect. Barring one Legendary Pokémon, any Pokémon capable of learning moves from the use of a TM was able to learn Protect, and it was a powerful defensive tool. However, it did keep the user immobile and unable to counterattack for its duration, and using it multiple times in a row lead to it being far more likely to falter.

Zorua was already affected by Toxic, and simply the time Sela spent Protecting itself would damage the fox. However, while under Protect, Sela wouldn't be able to do anything else. This inactivity, however, was far better than the worst case scenario (and most other scenarios) that could emerge from this Night Daze attack; though Night Daze was a Special attack that hit Sela's powerful Special Defense, it was still powerful in its own right, and the inaccuracy that could result from it would shatter our momentum, and possibly our entire chances of winning, instead of just temporarily pausing to defend ourselves.

"Use Protect!" Zorua still seemed unaware that it was still Sela it was battling, so I made sure not to mess up our plan by calling out to her by name. The longer we could keep up this ruse, the better; we were better off with Zorua thinking that this was an opponent it couldn't get an advantage over rather than one that its natural attacks were stronger against.

The 'Roserade' in front of me knelt down to lower her profile and crossed her arms in a defensive stance. Almost immediately, a shimmering blue shell appeared around the flowery Pokémon, though I couldn't help but worry that it wasn't made in time to get to full strength before the Night Daze hit; if it wasn't, Sela's Illusion would be broken, and she would most likely take heavy damage from the blow. We would have to focus on keeping her health up for the remainder of the battle in that case; though Toxic would help in weakening Zorua while we did so, the battle would be far more dangerous than if we could keep our momentum going.

I nodded once, glad that Siless had focused on simply defending. That Night Daze looked like it would be a doozy, and it would probably take a great deal of concentration to keep a Protect in place long enough for the attack to ground itself out.

Crouching down and crossing her arms, Sela concentrated and erected a barrier of brilliant blue energy just seconds before the Night Daze reached her. The dark wave crashed into the shield, pounding against it relentlessly. From where I was standing I could see the strain the attack was putting on Sela’s Protect; faint cracks started to appear in the shield. But luck was on the Gardevoir’s side, because just as her Protect shattered, the Night Daze lost its momentum and petered about. A few stray tendrils of Dark energy brushed past the Pokemon, but at most they would only make the Psychic feel a bit of discomfort.

Zorua looked upset by the fact that his Night Daze had failed. Huffing, the little fox managed to get to his paws. He took a few unsteady steps, then broke into a dash as he pelted towards Sela. Yelping, he leapt at the disguised Pokemon, his right paw whipping forward as his left was pulled towards his chest. He was getting ready to use a Fury Swipes, but as he hurtled towards Sela, his face contorted in pain. The Toxic was working its way through his body, and the more he exerted himself, the faster it would spread. Hopefully Siless would get his timing just right when he tried to capture the Pokemon, or else the fox might end up getting knocked out from the poison flowing in his veins.

    @Dog of Hellsing

Fury Swipes was much more preferable to us as an attack than Night Daze was. Fury Swipes took the form of multiple small blows, and while they could stack up, it didn't have the punch that a Dark-type move from Zorua could have. At the same time, letting Zorua exert itself like this was amplifying the effect of the toxins in the young fox's body, and the longer it kept up an active attack, the more likely it was to fall. There wasn't much to do except finish this battle soon, and with there being more of a risk of Zorua fainting the longer it went, I wanted it to be finished now.

Toxic was doing a good amount of damage on its own, so I only wanted to use offensive moves if they had a defensive purpose or had little damaging potential against Zorua, like Psychic. At the moment, the goal was to exhaust Zorua for capture, as even though it was wounded, it still had a good amount of energy left. While Toxic sapped away at its energy as well as its health, it wouldn't be quite enough to leave it on its own, but if we left Zorua alone to attack us, not only would it faint from its wounds before its energy was low enough for us to capture it, but it would be able to deal a good amount of damage to us before it did so, and not only would we be down a potential teammate, but we would be in a bad position to continue to go searching through Meteor Valley for more.

One idea formed in my head almost immediately; Zorua's energy level was the problem here. Sela had two major ways to take this energy away at her disposal. Hypnosis would absolutely drain Zorua, but it was based on Sela's psychic powers; while Zorua was more vulnerable to this than it was to damage from Psychic-type attacks, it was still highly resistant to the mind-altering powers of Psychic Pokémon in general. There was a very good chance that Zorua wouldn’t be affected, or at least whatever effect it would have would be negligible. The potential rewards were great, as Zorua would be put to sleep, and any resistance to being captured at that point is pretty much out the window, but the very real potential of getting absolutely nothing out of a Hypnosis attack steered me away from using it.

The other move that came to mind focused more on immobilizing and slowing the opponent, but the method of doing so brought the target to the point of exhaustion. Thunder Wave inflicted Paralysis to the target by forcing their muscles to spasm involuntarily. The user did not control when these spasms occurred, therefore the target could still get attacks off occasionally. However, the charge provided in Thunder Wave was strong and focused; instead of dealing damage, Thunder Wave provided a near constant electrical pulse in the target's body, making it so that the Paralysis would stay until it was treated specifically. This electrical stream was a good way to force spasms to immobilize the opponent, but it also was a good way to force the use of the target's energy in a non-threatening way. Zorua already had some residual electricity stored in its body from Thunderbolt; if Thunder Wave connected, I figured, the chance of a Paralysis gripping it would be high, and not only would it stop attacking, but it would lose a good bit of the energy it had left, and therefore be ready for capture.

"Sela, hit Zorua with Thunder Wave!" With this, any remaining ruse was certainly gone, and while the electricity built up in Sela's arms, she was enveloped in a dark flame identical to when she changed her form into that of a Roserade. In her disguised form, she was slightly taller than Zorua, but as she forced the Illusion away, she grew back to twice the young fox's height. Her (electrically charged) bouquets grew out into the longer green arms that guided her less-mental powers, and the masque that covered her eyes grew into the cap that formed the moon shape around her head. The changes may have messed up Zorua's aim, but whether it did or didn't wasn't the issue here. We had to have Thunder Wave hit to slice Zorua's energy down, and hope that a capture at that point would succeed. Thunder Wave may delay the Toxic enough to allow a second attempt, though it would still be pushing it; after that, if we wanted the Zorua, we would have to resort to Heal Pulse and Heal Bell to keep it up. I didn't think that the Zorua would appreciate being healed up just to be knocked down again into capture range, though; this would be an absolute last ditch attempt only.

The electricity bounced back and forth between my Gardevoir's arms, and as she held them out, it was released in a wide arc away from her. The Thunder Wave attack covered a good portion of the battle, with small bolts of electricity probing the ground for their target while others fizzled a good distance away in the air. Zorua was in the air already, launching its flurry of scratches, but as soon as one of Thunder Wave's streams hit it, they would all converge on their target. I could only hope this was enough to stop its attack, but it was more than enough to get a chance at a capture that was worth taking.

I reached into my pack. I had three different types of balls available to use, all camouflaged to note that they were specifically for use in the National Park. I grabbed the simplest one available: the standard Park Ball. It was only able to capture Pokémon that have not evolved, but Zorua was the lowest step in its evolutionary family, and so it was compatible with the ball. The other ball types were stronger, granting a better chance at a capture, but they were also capable of capturing higher evolutionary levels of Pokémon; they would be for if I absolutely needed that extra chance, as I hadn't brought more than three of each. I told myself they would only be used for last-ditch capture attempts (possibly with this Zorua here, as it was getting down to the wire with it) or for the higher evolutionary tiers of Pokémon.

As for now, I had my Park Ball ready. When Thunder Wave finishes, I would toss it at the Zorua. For now, I had to focus myself for when that single moment comes.

Zorua, being young, was probably quite inexperienced when it came to serious battles and not play-fighting with his siblings and parents. He had been bemused when Sela had apparently vanished and been replaced with a Roserade, when a more experienced and older Pokemon would have quickly realized the Roserade’s scent was the same as Sela’s. Thus, the one-two punch of Sela abruptly dropping her Illusion and sending a Thunder Wave at the airborne fox was a bit more of a surprise than he could handle all at once.

Yelping in surprise, Zorua twisted in the air as the Thunder Wave bore down on it. It lacked the mass or momentum to throw him back, but the sheer surprise of it was enough to distract him from his attack. However, he was still flying right at Sela, and as he thrashed out in an effort to shake off the Thunder Wave, his flailing paws caught Sela in the chest. The Psychic was knocked back a few steps, winded from the blow, and Zorua tumbled to the ground. There he laid for a moment, his limbs twitching spasmodically as the Thunder Wave caused his muscles to seize and relax over and over. Eventually he fell still, panting in the grass as the Toxic moved through his body and sapped at his remaining strength.

It was at this moment that Siless tossed a Park Ball he had procured at some point. The orb flew through the air and bounced off Zorua’s side, cracking open and releasing a red flood of energy. This engulfed Zorua and drew him inside the Ball a moment later, which clicked shut and landed on the grass where Zorua had just been. The Ball didn’t even wiggle once, a sure sign that Zorua was worn out.

After the battle, Latios slowly spiraled back down, cocking his head at the Park Ball containing Zorua. I walked over and picked the occupied Ball up, clipping it to my belt. Latios, his curiosity seemingly sated, gave a cry before the air around him shimmered. The Pokemon then vanished, his illusion of invisibility in place once more. A moment later the faint waver in the air was gone, signaling that Latios had left.

I faced Siless with a smile at patted the Ball on my belt as I said, “I’ll hold on to any captured Pokemon, and at the end of the run, the ones you claim will be given to you. The others will be healed at the Outpost before getting released back into the Valley. Anyways, good job on that battle there. Zorua certainly aren’t an easy bunch to battle, that’s for certain.” I then waved a hand absently. “So, where would you like to go? Deeper into the valley, or should we check out some of the nearby caves?”

"Thanks, Sela. You did a great job out there." She did excellently out there in battle, taking on a Dark-type without losing her focus or even taking that much damage for the battle. She seemed to be filled with adrenaline from the battle, almost ecstatic from the energy and the good battle. It seemed she was happy with our new partner as well.

"I’ll hold on to any captured Pokemon, and at the end of the run, the ones you claim will be given to you. The others will be healed at the Outpost before getting released back into the Valley."

It was reassuring to hear, but to me the idea of capturing a Pokémon beyond what you were going to claim seemed unfair; you battled with it and forced it to have the stress of acclimating to the idea of being a Trainer's Pokémon, and then don't actually take it with you. I tended to not continue after catching three Pokémon in a run for this reason; I just couldn't bring myself to do it, even though the wild Pokémon were probably better prepared for it than I gave them credit for.

“So, where would you like to go? Deeper into the valley, or should we check out some of the nearby caves?”

Latios had pointed us towards the caves for a Gothita. Even though he had a bit of uncertainty in the way he had directed us, it was the best we had. "I think we should head towards the caves."

I turned on the Gothita disk in my Poképlayer once more. The squeaky cry emanated from the speakers, and once again we were off, hoping that a Gothita would show up that was willing to join us.

Siless made use of his PokePlayer again, and the sound of Gothita’s cry once more echoed around us. It didn’t take long for the sound to vanish, and as last time, no Gothita came forth. However, we were still a fair distance from the caves Latios had absently pointed out, so there was a good chance if there were Gothita there, they might not have heard the Disc if they were deep in the caverns.

After playing the Voice Disc, we started off towards the caves. They were one of the smaller networks, so it wouldn’t take too long to explore. As we trekked, I pointed out things here and there, such as a flock of passing Sigilyph. Flutter, now back on my shoulder, trembled at the sight of the ancient birds as they serenely flew by overhead; being Poison and Bug types, she was naturally weak against their Psychic and Flying types. Normally, Bug moves were strong against Psychics, but Sigilyph’s Flying nature made those moves do neutral damage at best. It was little surprise that she was scared of the Pokemon, and even her Jolly nature couldn’t overcome instinctual fear. I patted her gently on the head to reassure her, but I then heard the faint sound of rushing wind from above us. Being more sensitive to air currents and pressure than I was, Flutter made a chittering noise and launched off my shoulder just before I heard the displaced air.

I turned, expecting to see something attacking, only to find one of the Sigilyph hovering motionlessly about five feet off the ground. It was watching Siless, as is gauging the Trainer’s mettle. I glanced up and saw Flutter above us, clearly ready to spread some Stun Spore on the bird if it looked like it was going to cause any trouble. I lowered my gaze to Siless before nodding at the Sigilyph.

“Looks like one of them finds you interesting,” I told the Trainer. “Feel up to fighting one?”

A Gothita didn't respond to the voice disk's call; instead, it was the Psychic/Flying-type, Sigilyph. Sigilyph would be interesting to have, but I would rather focus on my chance to get what I came for; Sigilyph didn't have the same draw as Zorua did to me. Sara's Venomoth seemed uncomfortable with the Flying-type near, for a good reason, I supposed. Sigilyph had not one, but two types that were capable of massive damage to it. If the Sigilyph decided to attack from us passing it up, we could cover Venomoth, though it'd obviously be much better if Sigilyph left us alone.

"I think I'll pass on this." I turned to my own Pokémon. "Sela, keep your guard up." We knew very well that some Pokémon could get very irritated when being passed up. For this, I'd wait until we got out of range to turn on the voice disk once more.
