    I stepped from the ferry that was bringing a new batch of Trainers to the National Park, peering up at the sky in time to see a large shape go flying by overhead. Some people ducked and covered their heads, obviously expecting an attack from some random irritated Pokemon. I chuckled a little as the Pokemon let out a cry, circling overhead a few times before folding its wings and diving at the building before me. Just before crashing into it, the flying creature executed a perfect flip, snapping its wings open and sending a plume of downy feathers into the air before landing. Some of the people clapped at the Pokemon’s display, now realizing that it was simply being an attention hog.

    “Show-off,” I muttered with a smile, shaking my head at Ironbeak’s antics. The Braviary was a Hardy sort, but he was also quite egotistical and almost Sassy in some ways. He lifted a wing at me as I approached the Ranger Outpost to indicate he’d wait outside; not surprising, since he wasn’t very fond of enclosed spaces. It was why he spent most of his time outside of his Ball, following me from the air as we explored Meteor Valley.

    Just as I was about to go inside, a group of squealing girls barreled past me, not stopping in the slightest to apologize for nearly bowling me over. Irritated, I reached around my shoulder and drew one of my large fans, snapping it open with a very audible crack. Startled, the girls turned to face me as I scowled at them, slowly but deliberately twirling the object in one hand.

    “I’m sure your parents raised you to not be so rude as to not almost run someone over and then not have the decency to say sorry,” I said. Normally I wasn’t so serious, but if it was one thing that really irked me, it was people who didn’t consider those around them. I lifted my arm, then fluidly jerked it down as I flipped the fan closed with another loud snap. The entire group of girls jumped at the sound, and people around me snickered a bit at their reaction. “Well? What do we say to people we just about shove over in a mindless flurry of activity?”

    “So-sorry,” one of the girls mumbled, and the others hastily followed her lead. I simply stared hard at them until they turned and hurriedly pushed their way inside; while it was obvious they were keen to get away from me, they were also clearly making sure they weren’t about to collide with anyone else that might be around them. I replaced my fan in its sheath on my back and shook my head, wondering what was sometimes going on in the heads of younger people.

    Ah well, no time to worry about some overexcited group of newbie Trainers. I stretched and turned my attention to my visit, wondering what kinds of things I’d encounter in my run. I was hoping for a few good Ghosts, or perhaps a solid Psychic Pokemon. Mainly I was here for the Ghosts, and not just because it was Halloween. A friend of mine was applying to take leadership of the Ghost Gym in Ecruteak City, since the previous Leader had been forced to give up his position because of problems outside of the Gym. She was in need for a few strong Ghosts to help round out her possible roster, so I had taken the task of trying to rustle up a couple for her.

    “Luck luck,” I said in a singsong tone to myself, hoping I wouldn’t end up having to disappoint my friend. Who knew, maybe I could find her some good teammates and snag something nice for myself as well.

    IC: I wasn't waiting too long, as the person I believed to be the trainer I was taking through Meteor Valley was approaching. Granted she was a bit in the distance, but it looked like she was having some kind of argument with a group of girls or something. I couldn't exactly tell, my eyes weren't the greatest and they were suppose to be checked out five years ago, so for all I knew I need glasses, but this was neither the time nor place to be thinking about that. The young woman finished up her business with the group, and came closer.

    "Well, I guess that's my cue. Lets go Chandelure," I said, waving Chandelure on as I went to go introduce myself. I had no idea what Pokemon Saundra was after exactly, she didn't use any sort of type repellent, so I guess she would have just been happy with anything that came her way. I couldn't exactly argue with that, I mean Meteor Valley was home to a lot of rare, and powerful Pokemon from three different types, so she was bound to run into at least something she would want. "Hello, my name is Gary, and I'll be your ranger for your run through Meteor Valley. And this is my Chandelure....Chandelure...I'm not good with nicknames," I said chuckling a little, as I extended my hand.

    I was soon greeted by my Ranger, who introduced himself as well as his Chandelure. I smiled at his comment about not being good with nicknames, shrugging a little as I watched Ironbeak preening himself.

    “I have a Chandelure. Her name, despite possibly being unoriginal, is Allure. It can be hard, though, thinking up nicknames that not only fit them, but that they also like. I think we went through maybe fifteen or twenty names before we came to Ironbeak’s name. He kept refusing everything else; I guess they didn’t sound strong enough or something. Anyways, I’m Saundra, obviously.” I took the Ranger’s hand and gave it a firm shake, then released him and glanced up at the sky. It looked relatively clear and it was pleasantly warm, but I knew from previous experience that all that could change in a heartbeat. Namely if someone decided to use something like Hail or Rain Dance.

    “So I’ll bet what with Halloween around the corner, a lot of people must be coming to Meteor Valley in hopes of snagging a few Pokemon appropriate for the season,” I said, lowering my gaze back to Gary. “It just so happens I’ve come in search of Ghosts myself, though not to keep. I’m here on assignment from a friend of mine trying to earn leadership of Ecruteak Gym in Johto; she’s got a pretty good lineup as it is, but a few more good Ghosts would really help her application stand out, you know? Hopefully I can round up a few nice things for her. Maybe a Golurk or a Cofagrigus. Both would be better, and I’d gladly take their pre-evolutions, too. I’m hoping Lady Luck is smiling on me today.”

    Saundra officially introduced herself, and told me about her Chandelure, and how she has trouble with nicknames too, like with her Braviary. She probably just did it so I didn't feel bad about not being good with nicknames, but either way it was a nice little story to hear. Then continuing on she said, “so I’ll bet what with Halloween around the corner, a lot of people must be coming to Meteor Valley in hopes of snagging a few Pokemon appropriate for the season. I’m here on assignment from a friend of mine trying to earn leadership of Ecruteak Gym in Johto; she’s got a pretty good lineup as it is, but a few more good Ghosts would really help her application stand out, you know? "Hmm, well I'm not sure. I mean, Mount Deckbi is still booming, and what with the colder months coming up it will be more popular. Then again I know this great fellow right there by the name of Eric, he's currently finishing up some business there, and then intends to visit Meteor Valley. Perhaps you know of him?" I asked. "But anyway, enough about him for right now, no point dwelling on about him while you've come here with an agenda, though before that I will say that Meteor Valley will probably get visits, and now with that lets get your run started," I said waving Saundra along.

    We entered the main gate that read "Meteor Valley", and were on our way. I was excited to be here, I hadn't been here before, and now being here, especially at Halloween time felt fun. Add in the fact that Chandelure was here too, and it really set the mood. Speaking of setting the mood though, we had only stepped into Meteor Valley when right away a Pokemon that you could kind of say was the embodiment of Halloween appeared. It was a dark purple Pokemon, with what appeared to be gemstone eyes, not to mention the gem it had on its chest too. It was a small Pokemon, it was a cave dweller, and so being one it rarely saw the light of day. Not only was it a Ghost-type, but it was a Dark-type, very Halloween like.

    "Well it wasn't one of the two Ghost-types you mentioned, but how about facing this Sableye?"

    Ironbeak flew along ahead of us as we headed off to Meteor Valley. It was a fair walk, but it was nice enough outside, so I didn’t mind. Gary and I passed the time talking (I informed him I sadly didn’t know of anyone named Eric), and I was surprised when we reached the area (it hadn’t really seemed to take as long as it did to get there). I admired the scenery for a moment as we passed the gate marking the entrance for the area; a valley stretched before us, a sort of path between to massive, steep hills that went on for miles. I could see caves spotting the sides of the hills, and piles of stones littered the ground in large numbers. These heaps of stone, along with the caves, hollow logs, and knee-deep grass in some places, would provide the perfect hiding spots for some of the Pokemon I was eager to find.

    We had just arrived when a small lavender-colored Pokemon scurried from one of the aforementioned rock piles; the sunlight caused the gems on its back to sparkle brightly as it halted for a moment, turning to face us with its brilliant blue gemstone eyes. It didn’t bolt immediately, and I nodded a little at Gary’s words when he asked if I wanted to catch it.

    “I’m sure my potential Gym Leader friend would like one of these on her roster,” I said, reaching into a pocket and running my fingers over the four PokeBalls inside it. “Since it’s been discovered that special ones have the Prankster Ability, I’d bet having one around would be pretty interesting. They do get a nice variety of non-attacking moves, after all. I just hope I don’t get a taste of what they can do if this one happens to have Prankster.”

    I decided at that moment to lead with Ripper, my Scizor. His typing would let him be resistant to pretty much anything Sableye threw at him, and if this little Ghost did indeed have Prankster, he’d be best suited to deal with it. I drew his Ball from my pocket and released the Pokemon from inside; the mantis formed from a burst of bright light, his blood-red exoskeleton gleaming in the sunlight. Feral yellow eyes calmly and thoroughly scrutinized the area before focusing on Sableye, and translucent wings quickly yet quietly beat the air behind him. Two large pinches gaped open and snapped at the air, a soft snick sounding out when they closed.

    “All right, Ripper, this will be capture number one,” I told him. “Go in for a Bullet Punch, then while Sableye is stunned, follow up with a Swords Dance.” Ripper nodded once before lifting both arms, crouching slightly…

    …and vanishing.

    What really happened was much less complex than literally disappearing, though. The secret lay with his Technician Ability; Bullet Punch was a move that normally let a Pokemon temporarily loosen all the muscles in its body except for those in a fist, or in Ripper’s case, one of his pinchers. The total relaxation of the body’s muscles allowed them to respond faster and make the Pokemon move much quicker than usual. A Pokemon with the Technician Ability was more skilled when using moves with less power, like Bullet Punch, so Ripper was able to move even faster than other Pokemon, making the most of his attack by focusing more speed to make the blow stronger.

    Thanks to his ability to use Bullet Punch to its fullest potential, Ripper was usually able to momentarily daze his opponents when the attack hit. If that was the case here, the Scizor would use those precious seconds of relative safety to perform his Swords Dance move, boosting his attack power to even greater heights. My plan was to quickly deplete most of Sableye’s hit points, and the best way to do that would be with a small number of solid, power-packed blows. I didn’t want to draw this out and give the little purple Ghost any chance to use the various altering moves they were famous for having, such as the unpleasant Pain Split. The faster it was over, the better off Ripper would be.

    Saundra nodded when asked if she'd like to battle, and replied with, “I’m sure my potential Gym Leader friend would like one of these on her roster. Since it’s been discovered that special ones have the Prankster Ability, I’d bet having one around would be pretty interesting. They do get a nice variety of non-attacking moves, after all. I just hope I don’t get a taste of what they can do if this one happens to have Prankster.” All the while she had been reaching into her pocket, and pulled out one of the Pokeballs she brought along. She pulled one out, the one she had decided on using, and threw its ball to the sky. From it emerged her Scizor. Scizor was a very powerful Pokemon, and against a foe like Sableye, who doesn't exactly always attack, but rather might use a move like Confuse Ray, or Will-o-Wisp, a powerful Pokemon was the best choice since they could wrap up a battle fast.

    “All right, Ripper, this will be capture number one. Go in for a Bullet Punch, then while Sableye is stunned, follow up with a Swords Dance,” was Saundra's first command to her Scizor. Rather than boosting Scizor's Attack stat, then attacking, she wanted Scizor to attack first to try to stun Sableye, then boost its attack. It was certainly different to say the least, but if it worked for her, then it was the right thing to do.

    Bullet Punch was one of two attacks that Scizor was known for, some would actually call Bullet Punch a signature attack for Scizor, with the other move being the popular Bug Bite. Scizor was known for this moves, because not only did Scizor receive a power boost from STAB, but their power was also increased by Scizor's Technician ability. Bullet Punch was an increased priority, Steel-type move. The user would charge over at the opposing Pokemon, and strike them with several punches, or blows if they didn't have a fist. Normally this would occur before the opposing Pokemon would attack, but this wasn't always the case. Saundra had Scizor use this attack in an attempt to stun Sableye, even if only for a few moments. Scizor raced over at Sableye, and struck it a few times, though the actual amount couldn't be counted because Scizor struck fast. Scizor move away, and Saundra got her wish, Sableye was stunned.

    This was Scizor's chance, it got into position for its next move. As Sableye was busy recollecting its wits, Scizor did a dance, one that would boost its attack strength. It wasn't a much of a dance, aside from some shaking, and a spin in place to end it, and call me crazy, but I could swear at the end of it you could see the image of some swords circling the Pokemon that used it. Scizor now raised its attack two levels, but before it could actually enjoy that, Sableye raced over to Scizor, and gave it a powerful slap across Scizor's body. It was Knock Off, a move that would remove the item of the Pokemon that gets hit by it. It was strange though, I mean Knock Off was a rather weak move, and even though Sableye got STAB from it, it was probably one of the worst moves Sableye could use against Scizor. Scizor wasn't even holding an item, so all the move did was damage it a little. The only thing I could think of was that Sableye just wanted to smack Scizor, and Knock Off was a move that was essentially a smack.

    I wasn't sure what exactly Sableye had in mind with its last attack, whether it just wanted to smack Scizor out of anger, or to let Scizor know it couldn't just do whatever it wanted, or if Sableye was just caught in the heat of the moment. Any way you look at it though, Scizor took an early lead against Sableye. Scizor got in a powerful Bullet Punch, and raised its attack so now it could easily hurt Sableye more. Still though, just because Sableye did the attack it did, it didn't mean Saundra could lower her guard. Sableye could have just been acting to make her lower her guard, then strike fearsomely at Scizor.

    The two Thunder Wave attacks hit their mark simultaneously. The lightning wrapped around the Unown, causing them to wince out of shock. J and K started to get weighted down, falling in height.

    The Unown looked at each other and hovered closer. Their bodies began to glow a white light hue, and the two started spinning around each other. The aura grew and grew until the two Pokemon surrounded themselves in a crystallized disk. The disk turned down and then shot out at our Pokemon.

    For some reason, the paralyzed pair seemed to dash through the air at fast speeds, leaving a trail of icy wind behind them. They struck Dragonair a few feet below his head, causing him to wince from the Ice-typed attack, and Lopunny in his chest, pushing him a few feet back, within seconds of each other. Even with their normal combined speed, the two Pokemon shouldn’t have been able to move this fast.

    This must have been their Hidden Power move. The attack took on a single elemental type, but I’ve never seen it used for close ranged, normally seeing it as a beam of red light when it came from an Unown. Though, I should expect something like this from Pokemon in the National Park.

    However, no matter what kind of tricks these two had up their non-existent sleeves, the move was still considered a “Special” attack, and now that Lopunny has witnessed it in action, he could attempt to reflect it with his Mirror Coat attack. It even helped that the two Pokemon decided to attack as a team, making two targets become one.

    However, now wasn’t the time for defense; Kitsu and I needed to get in some damage.

    “Let’s start out with Dragon Dance,” Kitsu said.

    It was smart to increase her Pokemon’s damage, and when Kitsu’s Dragonair used Dragon Dance, I knew what was coming up next. The serpentine-like Pokemon liked to battle from a distance, and that was just fine with me.

    Her Dragonair rose into the air and started twirling around in pirouettes, his body glowing from the technique. He started dancing fast enough to kick up some of the changing leaves on the ground. He gained enough momentum from move to also increase his speed, which would also help when trying to avoid attacks.

    “Use your momentum to make a Twister, Dragonair!” Kitsu shouted, as expected.

    “Now, Punpun, use Helping Hand to concentrate the Twister around just the Unown.”

    The problem with Twister is that it was a large column of high spinning winds. Sure, it targeted a large area, easily able to encompass both Unown in its power, but it also might do some damage to the nearby trees and bushes. While Helping Hand can power up a move, Lopunny was instead trying to stabilize the potentially chaotic attack into something much more manageable.

    Dragonair finished his dancing with a twirl of his tail. Lopunny focused his energy, represented by a glowing light-blue aura, and fired it at Dragonair, encompassing the teammate in the same light. This combo should slightly increase the initial burst of power that Dragonair released, but then as the column of wind snakes towards the Unown, Lopunny’s added focus should concentrate it into a cone which would smash into each Unown with all of its might.

    While we waited to see if the Unown would use the Hidden Power in the same way or release it from a distance, I told my Punpun to get ready to take the incoming attack for Dragonair. Dragonair was weak against the Ice properties of the attack, so hopefully Punpun would be able to reflect the move away from Dragonair. Lopunny knew that it might mean that one of the strikes would hit him, but I could tell that he was happy to try and protect his friend, who was still new to the park.

    OOC: I sowwie again that it took so long T_T

    IC:

    Our sparking attacks hit their targets in unison, causing the Unown to wince in discomfort as the static flew through their small bodies, targeting their muscles and slowing their movement. However, it didn’t seem like they had been stunned enough to prevent them from retaliating.

    The two symbol pokemon drew their bodies close together and began spinning. As they did this, they must have combined their only attack, Hidden Power. Their black bodies took on a refractive sheen as they became coated in a layer of ice and then flew toward our pokemon, hitting Dragonair in the neck and Punpun in the middle.

    “No, Dragonair!” I cried as I saw the flash of pain cross his face before he quickly composed himself.

    My dragon pokemon hated taking hits. Not that any pokemon liked it, I imagine, but Dragonair usually stayed at a distance from his opponent so that he would be able to hit and run with ranged attacks to harass his foe.

    The ice type Hidden Power would be a problem too. Dragons were weak to ice in particular. Something about the way the freezing substance reacted against their scales, as far as I could gather.

    Jesse had a special affinity for normal type pokemon. I realized that the variety of moves they could learn would come in handy with this battle. He liked to take advantage of normal type pokemons' versatility so I was pretty sure Punpun had a move prepared to counter our opponents' Hidden Power if needed.

    I considered having Dragonair increase his defense because of his weakness to ice type moves, but quickly realized that this battle would just wear our pokemon out if we didn't start dealing some damage.

    “Let’s start out with Dragon Dance,” I said. Raising his attack was usually a surefire way to end the battle sooner, and the speed boost would help him dodge if necessary.

    Dragonair immediately began to rise into the air and twirl. The centripetal force he was creating cause his serpentine body to straighten in its rotation. I looked down and saw some dry leaves on the ground begin to twirl from the rotating column of air the pokemon’s dance was creating.

    “Use your momentum to make a Twister, Dragonair!” I commanded.

    The dragon began to spin even faster, now creating a visible cyclone of silvery wisps of air.

    Twister seemed like the logical choice since we were fighting two opponents. Plus, it would allow my dragon pokemon to hang back and hopefully be able to avoid getting more hurt. However, the drawback was that since it had such a wide range, it wasn’t as focused.

    Jesse seemed to be on my wavelength though. I heard him call out, “Now, Punpun, use Helping Hand to concentrate the Twister around just the Unown.”

    Dragonair finished building up the winds with his body and coiled the Twister around the orbs on his tail.

    Punpun sent a light blue aura toward my pokemon which would hopefully increase the strength of his attack as well as concentrate it into one focused funnel to decrease the chance that the powerful attack would damage the trees behind the Unown.

    Dragonair sent the now blue and silver Twister off with a final twirl of his tail.

    Jesse turned toward his pokemon and instructed him to try to reflect any attacks the Unown used with Mirror Coat. Punpun must have known that intercepting an attack like that might mean that he would get hurt in Dragonair’s place.

    My pokemon gave Punpun an affectionate chirp of thanks. He had been a part of Jesse’s team as a Dratini before he was traded to me. I guess the two of them had been close friends at the time, which is why the rabbit pokemon was so willing to protect him now.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

    The combination attack from the two Unown seemed to catch the two a little off guard. Ivy didn't blame them; many Pokémon used the technique in different ways, so you really didn't know what to expect when you saw it. The two Trainers' Pokémon didn't look too injured, though, so everything was alright.

    Then the pair ordered their next set of instructions. Kitsu called for her Dragonair to use Dragon Dance, and immediately the dragon went into action. The wing-like appendages on his head twitched as his body began to rise. His snake body twirled in the air, performing moves of the dance in order to increase his strength. It was supposed to call on the power of their ancestors if she remembered right, although it was neat to see how each Pokémon performed the move. There were even some non-Dragon-types that learned it.

    The air around Dragonair started to swirl as he gained velocity, spinning and twisting and twirling. Lighter pieces of stone and bark on the ground began to slide around, not gaining enough lift to fly, but being pushed around by the wind he was making all the same. Kitsu chose that moment to call out, “Use your momentum to make a Twister, Dragonair!”

    The Dragon complied at once, manipulating the air into a violent twister that could cause damage to anything it came in contact with. The leaves and stones on the ground gained enough force behind them to rise now, and they all surged upward to get caught in the swirling wind currents, making the formerly-invisible air have a body. The dry brush behind her creaked as it leaned toward the wind, almost getting sucked in to the vortex. Powerful but potentially dangerous. Dragonair was definitely strong; Ivy had to hold her long hair back as it whipped around her from the wind.

    Jessee seemed to notice the damage that an uncontrolled twister like that could create, so he called out for his Lopunny to aid his friend. “Now, Punpun, use Helping Hand to concentrate the Twister around just the Unown.”

    Ivy was very impressed at the plan, and a tightness in her relaxed since she knew the Park wasn't going to be too damaged. Jesse wasn't a newbie to the Park, so he understood how things worked more than Kitsu did. It would be a good opportunity for her to see and learn with a friend to help her out. Ivy thought more people should come here in pairs. Team runs were a lot of fun.

    Jesse also pulled another interesting technique out of his Lopunny's many. He told the Normal-type to take the next attack for Dragonair, and then try to reflect it back in the form of a Mirror Coat. Ivy had seen that performed successfully many times, resulting in heavy damage for the other party. It might be hard to intercept everything that came toward the dragon if the two Unown did some sort of long-range attack, but he could try.

    The dragon concentrated for a moment more, helped out by the Lopunny's energy, and then he flicked his orbed tail and the twister went cruising. The air howled as it spun, whirling toward the two Psychic-types. They weren't moving as fast as they did before, perhaps due to exhaustion from their last attack. The paralysis that the Trainers' Pokémon inflicted on them made it harder to move, and they probably put a lot of effort into their spinning attack. Now they were suffering for it, and the two were sucked up into the wind.

    Ivy caught glimpses of their dark bodies as they were flailed around, no longer hooked together. The attack would sap on their strength, and they would be even more tired as the battle went on. They weren't going to sit back and do nothing though. The Ranger felt a hum of energy coming from the wind tornado at Haji's nudge on her mind, and then ice chunks came spewing out of the vortex.

    The clumps must've been another variant of their Hidden Power, and they sailed out of the twister in all different directions like frozen snowballs. Ivy had to duck as one went sailing by her head, and she heard Punpun cry out as he was struck by one of the chunks. He didn't get knocked down though, and he looked alright. Dragonair didn't seem to be injured, so thankfully that part of the plan was working. The Ranger could faintly see an almost-transparent screen forming too, reflecting the light as the attacks whizzed by.

    Soon the twister ran out of steam, and the debris floated back down to the ground as the lines in the air disappeared. The Unown were revealed, still spinning drunkenly due to the momentum they still carried. They both tried to straighten themselves, but it wasn't working too well. In the end, they decided to come together and try to use each other as a brace.

    That wasn't good for them though. Ivy watched as Punpun's screen glowed for a second, and then the energy from their Hidden Power flared and shot right back at them. Since they were together, the blast hit both, and they were shot into the trees. The net of leaves caught them before they could go sailing through them, and the two Pokémon bounced a little as they hit.

    Ivy could see they were tired, but they weren't giving up. They were gathering energy to themselves again, though Ivy didn't know how they were going to use it this time. Jesse and Kitsu could probably attempt to capture them soon. She hoped it was sooner rather than later, since she hated seeing Pokémon running themselves into the ground. The two would end up that way too, if they wouldn't quit battling.

    “Yay, great job Dragonair!” I squealed as our combined attack knocked into the Unown.

    All three of us trainers and our pokemon watched closely as the paralyzed psychic pokemon were sucked into the powerful wind vortex.

    I felt a twinge of empathy for the helpless Unown, but it was erased the next second and replaced by worry for my Dragonair as chunks of ice began to fly out from the Twister.

    I saw Ivy dodge a chunk whizzing by her head and heard a grunt from Punpun as he intercepted one of the frozen blobs. Almost immediately though a nearly transparent screen appeared in front of the rabbit pokemon. As the buffeting winds of the Twister died down, Punpun launched his Mirror Coat’s devastating effects back at the opponents in a ray of energy, knocking them into the leafy backdrop of the trees behind them.

    The two symbol pokemon looked pretty worn out, but they were still teetering up and readying themselves for their next attack.

    I turned to my more experienced friend. “One more attack before we throw our pokeballs?”

    He nodded in agreement. He took charge this time. “Punpun, use Fury Cutter. Try to get them both if you can!”

    “Hmm, I think we can give Punpun a hand this time,” I said to my Dragonair.

    He nodded in agreement, eager to return the favor.

    “Alright, start out by using Safeguard on Punpun!” I commanded.

    Dragonair closed his eyes as he concentrated. The blue orb on his throat began to glow and pulsate as it collected the protective energy. The dragon let out a low hum as he pushed the shimmering aqua bubble out of his horn and had it encircle his friend.

    “Now use Aqua Tail on Punpun and propel him forward!”

    I hoped that the Safeguard would protect Jesse’s Lopunny from taking damage from my pokemon’s attack while the Aqua Tail increased the force behind Punpun’s Fury Cutter.

    The two spheres on Dragonair’s tail came to life this time. Their misty contents began to swirl as they emitted a spiralling thread of water that encircled the lower third of the dragon’s body.

    Punpun braced himself as Dragonair’s tail splashed against the glimmering shield and sent him flying toward the opponents.

    “On your word,” I said to Jesse.

    He nodded in acknowledgement and watched the Unown as they unleashed another Hidden Power toward the Lopunny that was flying toward them. The Safeguard absorbed some of the damage, allowing Punpun to continue forward.

    The rabbit’s arms were glowing green and in position to unleash his Fury Cutter.

    “Punpun attack!”

    “Now drop the Safeguard, Dragonair!”

    The air around Punpun shimmered as the aqua bubble faded away, allowing Punpun to extend his arms and perform the attack his trainer ordered.

    I pulled a park ball out of my satchel, gripping it tightly as I watched our pokemons’ attacks. After Punpun’s Fury Cutter hit, I threw the park ball at the K Unown and waited to see what would happen.

    @WinterVines OCC: It was my fault for the lateness this week XP

    IC:

    Dragonair’s and Punpun’s combination attack sent the black featured eyes swirling within the giant faintly glowing twister. I was relieved to see it concentrated around the two Unown as planned, and I could see that Ivy was relieved as well. The Psychic-type Pokemon couldn’t dodge out of the way, partially due to the Paralysis, and partially due to the effort it took to do their last attack.

    They flung apart from each other, only to come back to each other when the wind pushed them into each other and then away again. The twister became too powerful to see through anymore, so I quickly closed my eyes to activate my Foresight ability. I’ve had such an ability since I was younger, and it helped we in the Park many times before to see through smokescreens and light fog.

    I could see the Unown start to shine, probably blue again - the Foresight was similar to night vision, but instead of turning everything green, it turned it red. They started to spin on their own and surrounded themselves in ice, releasing them haphazardly out of the twister.

    I opened my eyes and saw the ice shards zoom by our ranger and around to hit Punpun in his back, but Punpun bore it. His Helping Hand did its job, so he concentrated his Psychic energy around himself, creating a faint light around himself. Punpun watched as the second shard from the “K” Unown came whizzing towards Dragonair, who was preoccupied with keeping up the Twister. Punpun bounced high towards the incoming Hidden Power and abosorbed it into his Mirror Coat.

    The attack subsided, and we saw the two Unown bobbing around, dizzy from the attacks. They interlocked their appendages together to balance themselves in the air, making them a singular target. Punpun landed in front of Dragonair and was illuminated by the Mirror Coat’s pink light. The energy of the attack was released as a large column of light which pushed the Unown into the trees where they first appeared. They struggled to get up and prepared to use Hidden Power for a third time.

    They seemed to be running out of energy though, and Kitsu and I needed to end this.

    “One more attack before we throw out pokeballs?” Kitsu asked me.

    I nodded. One more attack should be enough to weaken the two. Lopunny had a move that would be good against Psychic types, Fury Cutter. It was a Bug-type move that started off weak, but increased in power every time it was used. It shouldn’t be powerful enough to KO’d either Unown, but it would still get them down just a bit more for easier capture.

    “Punpun, use Fury Cutter. Try to get them both if you can!” I commanded.

    “Hmm, I think we can give Punpun a hand this time,” Kitsu commented. “Alright, start out by using Safeguard on Punpun!”

    Dragonair concentrated, and the blue orb around his throat shone with a crimson light. He started emitting a small hum-like chant under his breath. Out of his horn, he produced a shining blue-green sphere that surrounded Punpun. The shield would protect Punpun from some damage and any secondary effect that might be placed upon him, though I didn’t know why Kitsu did such a thing, since the Unown only knew one... Oh wait I understood!

    “Now use Aqua Tail on Punpun and propel him forward!” Kitsu commanded.

    Now, I’ve seen Dragonair pull something like this before, but he really needed to concentrate in order to keep the Safeguard up so that he didn’t hurt Punpun. Dragonair’s orbs lit up, and a stream of water twirled around his tail.

    Punpun had faith in his old pal and readied his own attack within the sphere. His arms began to glow light green, which reflected against the light emitted again the Safeguard. He lashed out the energy like small daggers coming out of his paws, ready to stab or slash the enemy.

    Dragonair swiped his tail against Punpun’s ball and launched the guarded Punpun towards the two Unown, still readying their own attack.

    “On your word,” Kitsu said.

    I nodded. The two Psychic-types fired off another attack, probably to try to slow Punpun down, but it didn’t matter. I waited until the Safegaurd took some of the damage from the Hidden Power attacks and until Punpun was close enough to hit the staggering opponents.

    “Punpun attack!” I yelled out.

    “Now drop the Safeguard, Dragonair!”

    The bubble dissipated into glittering aqua dust. Punpun kept up his momentum and extended his energy filled arms towards the two Unown, ready to strike them both with Fury Cutter.

    Kitsu and I pulled out a Park Ball, a green camouflaged looking Pokeball, and waited until Punpun was out of the way after the combination attack. We threw our balls to capture the Unown, mine towards the “J” and Kitsu’s towards the “K.”

    ---

    As the battle dwindled down, both Jesse and Kitsune realized they were going to have to wrap this battle up. Their Pokémon weren't taking too much damage, but it would slowly build up if they dragged it on for too long. The Unown had just about had it too, bobbing back and forth through the air, trying to stay floating.

    The duo thought of a plan, Dragonair trying to use Safeguard and Aqua Tail to propel Punpun forcefully at the Psychic-types while he used a Fury Cutter. It worked mostly, but Punpun was still damaged a tiny bit from the Aqua Tail. Safeguard did create a sort of protective bubble, but since it was normally suited to warding off nasty effects of attacks, there wasn't enough time to try and make it more like a Protect screen.

    Still, it seemed to work, and the rabbit went flying at the letters. They seemed to realize their end was near, so they both rattled from side to side in one last attack, making it rain down ice chunks. There wasn't a lot of time for them to strengthen their attack, though, so it didn't do a lot of damage to the Trainers' Pokémon.

    Punpun lashed out, using the momentum in his flight path to add to the force of his move. The Unown tried to separate, but they didn't get completely apart, so he managed to get damage on both with his slash. Ivy noticed the J seemed a bit more damage than the other though.

    That didn't matter so much in the end, as both Trainers decided to throw Park Balls at their respective captures. The paralysis, combined with the damage from the attacks and the weariness from trying to move around, was enough to keep them from dodging. Both balls hit, and the two Unown were sucked inside, the devices gently falling to the ground. Ivy waited for them to stop shaking, seeing if either one was going to break out, but nothing happened.

    The center of the balls lit up in red, and the combined ping echoed against the trees as the devices locked closed. Ivy went over to gather them up, dropping them in a safe vest pocket. “Congratulations,” she said to the Trainers, particularly Kit. “You just caught your first Park Pokémon. How does it feel?”

    Haji joined her side, and they waited for the Trainers' hype to die down. She wouldn't continue on until they were ready, so for now she'd let them bask in their success.

    OOC: "Wow, it feels like we have been walking for almost a year now!" *is shot*. Either way, might be a tad bit rusty due to hiatus.

    Akinai jumped slightly, startled that something had touched her. When she saw that the contact was only the Kirlia trying to hold hands with her, she relaxed, giving the Pokemon a small smile in return. "It will be alright." she said to the Kirlia. Wonder what is scaring her? she mused.

    Jade, who barely had enough room to move around, noticed the switch as well. She nodded comfortingly to the Kirlia and moved a couple of steps further away.

    "Thanks," Akinai said to Chainy, accepting the flashlight. "Wonder what we'll find in here? Kirlia doesn't seem to like this place much..."

    As if in response to Akinai's statement, the Pokemon seemed to hide behind Akinai.

    OOC: xD It's okay, I've often thought about continuing this rp, so I'm happy that I actually can ^^ Hopefully this Encounter will get your engines revving again.

    ~~~~~
    "Thanks. Wonder what we'll find in here? Kirlia doesn't seem to like this place much," Akinai said to me.
    "Yeah, unfortunately there are a lot of unpleasant Pokemon running around here in the Valley," I admitted as we continued into the cave It was only just big enough for us to walk side by side, with Jade following us behind and the Kirlia behind Jade. "Spiritomb are usually nasty. It's common for Gengar to take pranks too far. You also really don't want to get on the wrong side of a Sableye. Thank God that Chandelure prefer the heat of Mount Deckbi."
    Our torchlights probed deeper into the cave. I heard a rustling, and my fist shot out in front of Akinai. When the rustling did not happen again, I carefully removed my arm and our little group inched forwards. I realised that Dual wasn't here any more - he'd probably gone off scouting, like he usually did. That was okay, but I would have preferred him here at my side.
    I heard the rustle behind us, and I spun. The Kirlia shrieked as the light hit her, but her finger was pointing in the direction we were travelling. I turned back and my light fell onto a glossy white coat of fur. The torchlight traveled upwards, revealing soulful red eyes and a single curving, black horn. Its fin-like tail swayed slowly from side to side. The Absol glanced at me, but the majority of its attention was spent on Akinai. The Absol stared straight at her, almost like it was reaching into and inspecting her soul.
    "Uh, this guy looks pretty into you. You wanna try battling it?" I asked her. I hoped she would - Absol were rare - but they had intimidating reputations. Hopefully this one wasn't an indicator of bad luck on our Expedition.
    OOC: brb, geeking out o_O Seriously though, Absol was the main reason why I chose this area. What happens to the character count on Kirlia though?
    "Chandelure? I don't think that species is covered in my book..." Out of habit Akinai fished out her booklet, then mentally facepalmed as she realized that it was too dark to read. "Guess I'll read it later." she said with a sheepish grin. The group continued to trudge on further into the cave.
    It seems like they were not the only ones nearby, though. Every now and then there was a rustling, quiet enough that Akinai wouldn't have even noticed the sound if it wasn't for Chainy stopping the group. As soon as Kirlia shrieked, Akinai spun around, trying to discover what had startled her. By the time she had noticed, Chainy's flashlight was already illuminating the Pokemon. "An Absol..." Akinai whispered. She had been hunting for one of these ever since she had started her journey and received Jade.
    The Disaster Pokemon seemed to be as equally interested in her as well, considering it's eyes were glued on the human rather than the Flygon or Kirlia.
    "Uh, this guy looks pretty into you. You wanna try battling it?" Chainy said finally. Perhaps he was just as surprised?
    Definitely! "You have no idea." Akinai grinned, pulling out Lunaris' Pokeball. In mid-throw she felt a tug on her other arm, and remembered. Oh right, Kirlia. Putting the Ball back, she knelt down to eye level with the Kirlia.
    "I think this guy is asking me to fight," Akinai said, pointing at the nearby Absol. "You can wait with Jade if you want, I can probably use my other teammates for this battle with little trouble." She ruffled through her bag, looking for Potions in case the battle took longer then expected. While doing so, her fingers grazed the lone Parkball she had placed near the bottom, buying the weaker Ball as an afterthought. Could this be the time? she mused. Couldn't hurt to ask. "You could also come with me, if you want to. That way you can always be with me and Jade, and you won't have to worry about any Ghosts or Dark Pokemon attacking you. How about it?"
    Akinai pulled out her Parkball, offering it to the Kirlia.
    OOC: I had a feeling you might like this ^^ Seriously though, another reason I'm glad you came back is your rolls were waaaaaay too good to waste. Also, this is what happens.
    ~~~~~

    "You have no idea," Akinai replied quietly, gazing at the Dark-type. She reached around and pulled out a PokeBall, preparing to throw it towards the Absol, obviously preparing to battle it. However, something stopped her. The Kirlia had inched forward from behind Jade, quite clearly petrified by the Absol. She pulled on the human's sleeve, wanting to leave.

    Akinai knelt down next to the Psychic-type. "I think this guy is asking me to fight," she explained to the Kirlia. "You can wait with Jade if you want, I can probably use my other teammates for this battle with little trouble." Her hands shifted through her bag, and suddenly she paused. Slowly, she withdrew her hand, which was holding an expanded Park Ball. "You could also come with me, if you want to," she offered. "That way you can always be with me and Jade, and you won't have to worry about any Ghosts or Dark Pokemon attacking you. How about it?"

    The Kirlia nodded frantically, and put her hand on the spherical device. However, nothing happened. Both of them looked confused.

    "Akinai, Kirlia is an evolved Pokemon, so you need to use a Super Ball," I explained. "And I don't think that Absol is going to wait for much longer."

    As if to emphasise my point, the Dark-type began kneading its claws on some rocks, preparing to fight. I took a couple of steps backwards - Absol were powerful fighters, and I didn't want to get too close, especially in such a confined place as this.

    "You have got to be kidding me!" Akinai groaned, covering her face with her hand. She had completely forgotten that the Parkballs were weaker for a reason. Still kneeling next to her pack, she dropped the Parkball out of annoyance.

    "I don't think that Absol is going to wait for much longer." Chainy warned, backing up.

    The Absol seemed to agree, readying into a battle stance. Obviously it didn't appreciate the fact that it was being ignored for a Psychic type.

    Come on, think! That Absol didn't look too happy, and, if what she had read up on them was correct, they were quite agile, striking their foes quickly while darting out of range before anyone could retaliate. She really didn't want to lose her chance at capturing this Absol, but Kirlia was absolutely terrified.... If she did nothing now, the Kirlia would more then likely lose all her trust for the Trainer. She shot a glance in her pack, and noticed one of her Superballs was near the top, ready for use. Jade was close by as well, standing next to the Kirlia.

    "You two, we've got to be quick about this! Jade, aim a Sand Attack towards that Absol!" Akinai called out, darting her hand towards the Superball and offering it to Kirlia. She would worry about retrieving the Parkball later.

    Jade gave a loud cry and flyed towards the Absol as a distraction, dragging her tail on the ground as she did so to accumulate as much dirt and sand as possible. Giving another cry, she flung the stream of sand towards the Absol, trying to aim as close to the face as possible.

    OOC: Absol gender?

    ~~~~~
    The Absol continued to sharpen its claws, making a very worrisome sound that reverberated throughout the thin tunnel. It wanted to get the battle underway, and it wasn't happy that Akinai was paying so much attention to the Kirlia.
    "You have got to be kidding me," Akinai muttered, dropping the Park Ball and allowing it to roll away. She began pawing through her pack again, frantically looking for a higher-level ball.
    "You two, we've got to be quick about this! Jade, aim a Sand Attack towards that Absol!" she yelled.
    I ducked just in time as the Flygon barreled over me, dragging her tail past me on the ground as she did so. The Dragon-type accumulated dirt and grit in front of her tail, and she flicked it towards the Absol with a war cry. Akinai would have to battle smart in here - there wasn't enough room for Jade to maneuver like she usually did.
    I looked over at Akinai and I saw that she had successfully dug out a Super Ball. She held it out to the Kirlia. The Psychic-type placed her hand on the top of the device. It turned into red plasma, which was quickly sucked inside the capture device. Instead of shaking, like with normal captures, the light on the front of the sphere blinked red immediately.
    "Here, I'll take that," I said to Akinai, scooping the ball out of her hand. "You'll need to pay full attention to this battle."
    That wasn't the only reason - Ranger regulations stated that the Ranger had to hold onto all captured Pokemon until the Expedition ended. This was in case the Trainer caught more than their three allowed Pokemon. However, I wasn't wrong - the Absol was hissing unhappily at Jade, its head held low, which reminded me of an infuriated cat. An infuriated cat that could summon fire and control electricity. Great.
    OOC: Male, please. Also, are there any large rocks nearby, or just one open, narrow cave?
    "You did fantastic, Jade! Thanks to you, Kirlia is safe and sound." Akinai called out to the Flygon.
    Jade twitched her tail in reply, but kept her gaze on the Absol. Paying full attention to her opponent would likely mean the difference between success and defeat.
    Akinai gave the Superball to Chainy, still slowly registering the fact that she had finally caught her first Park Pokemon. Celebrating would have to wait however; the Absol looked even angrier then before, and his full attention seemed to be on Jade.
    Akinai took a look around her surroundings, trying to formulate a game plan. The cave, though not as narrow as the earlier passage, still left little room for mobility. Jade probably would not be able to fly out of the Absol's reach, which left the Flygon with a disadvantage. While Lunaris would probably be a better choice, Akinai decided to give her starter a try first, if only to gauge the Absol's strength.
    "We're probably going to have to fight this thing in close quarters eventually, but try to hold off on that until the last possible moment! Show him the power of your Dragonbreath, and stay on the defensive." Akinai called out to the Flygon. Absol's claws and horn looked deadly; they would probably cut Jade to ribbons if they struck first.
    Jade took a deep breath, leaping back as she did so. In midair, she shot a shot a beam of shimmering azure light at the Absol from her mouth, using the force from this to move even further back.
    OOC: Pretty much just a reallllllly narrow cave. That said, feel free to invent stuff in the surroundings as long as it doesn't contradict what's already been said and it's not too broken.
    ~~~~~

    "You did fantastic, Jade! Thanks to you, Kirlia is safe and sound," Akinai called out.

    The Flygon twitched her tail in acknowledgment, but she didn't look away from the Absol. Good call - the Dark-type was slowly waving its dark tail, obviously preparing something.

    "We're probably going to have to fight this thing in close quarters eventually, but try to hold off on that until the last possible moment! Show him the power of your Dragonbreath, and stay on the defensive," my Trainer ordered.

    Jade leaped backwards, and a bright blue stream of fire boiled out of her mouth, propelling her further backwards. The Dragonbreath wrapped around the Absol, causing it to hiss once against. The Disaster Pokemon backed up, out of the range of the attack. Suddenly, the temperature in the cave dropped. Swirling motes of light began to gather around the Absol, and a blue film flowed from the Dark-type towards Jade. The Icy Wind wrapped around her, causing small icicles and patches of snow to freeze all over her body. The Absol yowled its victory and backed up a little bit, preparing to pounce.

    "Jade's maneuverability has just been cut even more," I warned Akinai. "Unfortunately, she's probably not the best choice for this battle."
