Akinai grinned to herself as she saw the Dragonbreath hit the Absol with little trouble. Hopefully it will slow him down, she thought, yet her hopes were dashed as she saw the Pokemon back out of range, seemingly unhindered. To make things worse, the room suddenly became colder, far too fast for it to be a mere temperature change. "Wait, don't tell me that it knows an Ice move!"

Sure enough, the air around the Absol seemed to crystallize in place, then blow towards Jade. Jade gave a small cry as the wind struck her, icy rimes beginning to form on her.

Akinai hissed between her teeth in frustration. She didn't even know that Absol could even learn an Ice move. Her lack of study had cost her an attack.

"Jade's maneuverability has just been cut even more," Chainy warned Akinai. "Unfortunately, she's probably not the best choice for this battle."

Akinai nodded to this, and pulled out two Pokeballs from her belt: Jade's own Ball and Cryrosant's. "Jade, return!" she said, holding out the Flygon's Pokeball. As Jade was returned to her ball, she threw out the second ball, containing her Aggron. "Cryrosant, Ram it into the wall using Iron Head! Once you have it pinned, use Iron Defense to steel yourself!"

As the Aggron materialized, the form appeared to crouch down and rush toward the Absol in a bull's charge, his head glinting in the light.

Akinai seemed horrified that Absol had access to an Ice-typed move. Apparently, she didn't know that Absol had access to one of the widest movepools out of every Pokemon in existence. It would be have been very unlikely that not even one of them was Ice-typed.

My Trainer took my advice. She held out a pair of PokeBalls. The on her left emitted a red light, which encapsulated Jade and helped her retreat to safety. The right one flew outwards and a large red mass of plasma blasted towards the Absol.

"Cryrosant, ram it into the wall using Iron Head! Once you have it pinned, use Iron Defense to steel yourself!" Akinai yelled.

The Absol's eyes widened and I thought I saw a second of fear. The red plasma resolved into an Aggron which was freight-training towards the Dark-type. A stream of blue sparks blasted towards the Steel-type from the Absol's single black horn. It didn't do much, though, barely an impediment at all. Cryrosant headbutted the Absol viciously, tossing her horns and throwing the Wild Pokemon into the cave wall. She then turned and roared viciously, and a silver veil descended across the Pokemon, hardening her skin.

The Absol groaned and picked itself up. It mewled angrily at Cryrosant, making irritating sounds and shaking its horn. I recognised what it was doing - it was insulting Cryrosant, Taunting the Aggron and belittling her enormous strength.

"Nice going!" Akinai yelled out to Cryrosant, watching the Absol strike the wall. Judging from the sheen that was appearing from the Aggron's body it seemed that the Iron Defense move had worked perfectly as well. It didn't matter if they were slow now; Cryrosant should be able to handle anything that the Absol threw out.

As Absol rose, it started to act oddly, shaking it's head back and forth while crying in an almost singsong voice.

Akinai's jaw dropped a moment, not believing what she was witnessing. "You just got slammed into the wall by a giant steel monster, and you're taunting it?" she said to the Absol, shaking her head sadly. "You must really have a death wish..."

Cryrosant appeared to be as stunned as Akinai, eyeing down the Absol. Her look said it all: Seriously? The Aggron snorted in disbelief, and looked over at her Trainer for orders.

Akinai eyed both her Pokemon and Absol carefully. From what she could tell, Cryrosant was barely damaged from the Absol's earlier attack, and could probably handle even more of them. The problem was the Taunt move; Cryrosant was pretty calm compared to other Aggron, but she was not sure if that meant that she would still listen to orders. The Absol, in turn, looked as if the earlier attack had hurt it quite a bit, but could still hold it's own. Currently it was locking eyes with Cryrosant.

Might as well risk it; nothing ventured, nothing gained. Akinai just hoped that she would not regret leaving her Aggron out to fight.

"Show that Pokemon that brute force does not always win the day, Cryrosant. Let him hear your Metal Sound move! If he manages to get close to you even through that, protect yourself with another Iron Defense." Akinai watched carefully. If things got bad, she would have to switch out again.

Cryrosant lowered her head once more, this time to begin grinding her horns together. A screeching sound began to fill the air, akin to the sound of iron nails deeply grinding against a chalkboard.

Cryrosant watched the Absol's Taunt motionlessly. When the large Aggron started moving, I had the idea that Cryrosant was more miffed than enraged. That's not to say she didn't want to cause some serious hurt to the Dark-type, but perhaps she wasn't as angry as most Pokemon that had just been Taunted.

Apparently, this thought occurred to Akinai as well. "Show that Pokemon that brute force does not always win the day, Cryrosant. Let him hear your Metal Sound move! If he manages to get close to you even through that, protect yourself with another Iron Defense," she ordered.

I let out a low whistle. Akinai had girl-balls. Neither of the attacks she commanded were usually usable through a Taunt. Akinai was placing a lot of trust in her Pokemon, which was a high-risk but high-reward strategy.

Sure enough, the Aggron lowered her head and reached up with her hands. She scraped them together, causing a horrible scraping sound to echo through the cave. I covered my ears with my hands, trying to block out the sound. As bad as it was for me, it must have been worse for the Absol. It keened in pain and its white coat began to fluff up. Suddenly the whiteness expanded, and shot out in a circle around Cryrosant. The Absol had used Double Team to create some clones!

The clones all shook their horns angrily at Cryrosant. As one, they darted in and headbutted Cryrosant around her midriff. The Aggron grunted unhappily and swatted at the multiple Dark-types, but they were too fast for her and managed to retreat safely. The benign irritance had gone from Cryrosant's eyes, and it had been replaced by anger.

Akinai barely managed to cover her ears in time to deal with the Metal Sound barrage. It worked! she thought, grinning widely.

Her mood was killed upon seeing the Absol retaliating with a Double Team, finally going on the defensive. To make things worse, it took advantage of the move to have all of the images strike Cryrosant at once.

Cryrosant roared in frustration, unable to strike any of the Double Team images as they struck her from all sides. Her disbelief quickly transformed into rage, giving the Absol a death glare.

"Well, that sort of worked." Akinai muttered. She doubted Cryrosant would be on the defensive now. To make things worse, now she had to deal with the image clones as well. She eyed the Absol images, trying to see if any of them betrayed anything, or gave a hint on the real one. Sadly, they all looked identical to her. That left two choices: get lucky and hit the right one, or try to hit them all at once. Hopefully the latter would dispel the images; she wasn't that familiar with Double Team.

Ok, time to get creative! She could try another Metal Sound to break the Absol's concentration, but judging from the look on Cryrosant's face... she was not going to just stand there and take hits again. An Earthquake could possibly work as well, but she didn't know how sturdy this cave was. The last thing she wanted was for her and Chainy to get trapped in a cave-in, giant Steel Pokemon or not. Looking around didn't seem to help matters either, nothing but stone and dirt around them. Waitasec, dirt might actually be useful here!

"Cryrosant, I know you're mad, but going against that Absol right now would be like hitting a ghost. Vent your anger! Try to barrage him with Mud Slap, you're bound to hit him eventually!" Akinai called out to Cryrosant, then took a few steps back. "Uh... you might want to move back a little bit," she advised to Chainy "If this works, it's going to be messy."

Cryrosant, still seeing red, began to dig intot he ground furiously. In moments she was throwing large globs of mud all around her in a complete arc.

"Well, that sort of worked," Akinai muttered to herself. I didn't say anything, but I couldn't see a reason why she commanded Metal Sound. Metal Sound made the target weaker to Special attacks, and Aggron had none. Perhaps she was planning on toggling Jade back in?

"Cryrosant, I know you're mad, but going against that Absol right now would be like hitting a ghost. Vent your anger! Try to barrage him with Mud Slap, you're bound to hit him eventually!" Akinai called.

The young woman then looked at me apprehensively and took a few steps back. "Uh... you might want to move back a little bit," she suggested. "If this works, it's going to be messy."

I was a bit slow to react. I turned back to look at the Aggron and the Absol. Cryrosant was pounding her arms viciously into the ground. I suddenly realised that I had been wrong earlier. Aggron did have a Special move - Mud Slap! It wasn't very powerful, more of a distraction than a true attack, but the Metal Sound would help out there.

I hurriedly threw my trenchcoat over my arm in front of me, creating a makeshift shield out of the fabric. I felt a huge load of mud splatter over my coat, making it heavy. A second lot struck me, and then a third. Soon after that, Cryrosant stopped thrashing around, and I cautiously lowered my coat, which was now caked with wet dirt.

"Awwww man, this is nasty," I whined.

Most of the Absol clones had disappeared sometime during Cryrosant's attack. However, two remained. One of them was obviously the real one. They started prowling around each other, gesturing with their horns in all directions. A barely visible blue glow sheathed their horns completely, making them sharper and longer. The Swords Dance was an effective method of increasing attack power - Dual often used it in his fights. The Absol's physical prowess would now be a match for Cryrosant's enhanced metal armour. Akinai would have to battle carefully.

That turned the tables a bit, all right. At least we are down to at least one image now. Akinai looked around and saw that Cryrosant's mud rampage had covered areas nearby with globs of wet dirt area, along with a small trench that the Aggron was standing in now.

"Awwww man, this is nasty," Chainy had responded shortly after the barrage. His coat had been covered with mud thanks to Cryrosant throwing the globules everywhere.

"Sorry about that," Akinai grinned sheepishly "maybe a Water Pokemon can help get it out later?" She would offer to do so herself, but had no Pokemon with Water-type moves, not even in her box. The closest she had was Kaya, her Glaceon, but Ice moves would probably make matters a million times worse. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed that the Absol was up to something again.

Absol didn't seem to be happy about the Mud Slap overkill tactic either, and seemed to be getting a little tired. In a possible ploy to finish the battle quickly, it begam to move oddly once more, this time in a different pattern and moving in tandem with it's images. Shortly after, both Pokemon forms had a blue aura around their horn, making it glow slightly in the dim light. They seemed to be a lot sharper as well, able to tear through Cryrosant's armor easily.

Cryrosant seemed to be a little calmer then before, but was still giving the Absol a death glare. she made her way out of the trench, always keeping her eyes on the other Pokemon.

Not good, not good at all. Akinai had hoped that by now Cryrosant would have worked her way out of the Taunt, therefore switching to the defensive once more. If the Aggron attacked full-out now, Absol would likely run away or faint; the latter was more likely to happen since it seemed to have a pretty stubborn attitude. Akinai needed a way to calm down her teammate quickly, and only saw one solution. She grabbed two Pokeballs from her belt once more: Cryrosant's and Lunaris'.

"Cryrosant, take a moment to cool off." Akinai stated, recalling the Aggron into the Ball. "Lunaris, start things out with a Sand Attack! Try to aim for both of them!"

Cryrosant disappeared from the field in a beam of ruby light. In her place materialized the form of Lunaris, Akinai's Mightyena.

Lunaris, wanting to get into the action right away, began to rapidly kick the first area of dirt that he came to with his hind legs towards the Disaster Pokemon. The dirt, still mostly wet due to the earlier attack, almost appeared to be a weaker form of Mud Slap.

"Sorry about that," Akinai apologised, a cheeky grin on her face. "Maybe a Water Pokemon can help get it out later?"

I grunted and pulled off the coat before slapping at the mudstains. Parts of it flaked off, but the majority stayed on. I grimaced and bundled the coat up into a roll before shoving it into my pack. The sun was getting higher anyway, and if we got back to the outside I'd be happy to have it off.

As the pair of Absol continued to dance, Akinai pulled out a pair of PokeBalls again. "Cryrosant, take a moment to cool off," she said, and the Aggron disappeared in a flash of red light, only to be replaced by the black and gray form of a wolf. It was a Mightyena, which were fairly rare. They weren't rare because of their battle abilities or some kind of resistance to capture, but because they were mediocre fighters at best. Still, that impressed me - Akinai used Pokemon she liked instead of the standard League Pokemon.

"Lunaris, start things out with a Sand Attack! Try to aim for both of them!" Akinai called.

The Mightyena turned around and kicked up powerfully towards the two Absol. A cloud of dust flew up towards the pair of Dark-types, empowered by the crater that Cryrosant had made. Nothing happened for a couple seconds. Suddenly, the Wild Pokemon burst out of the cloud, their claws glowing bright white. They slashed Lunaris across the shoulder, drawing a pair of mirror-image lines along the wolf. Lunaris howled, but he seemed okay - it was more the shock that caused the cry than the pain.

As the dust cloud cleared, Akinai couldn't help but groan as she saw that the Absol image was still in place. She had thought that a damaging version of Sand Attack would dispel the illusion; obviously she was wrong. "this guy is a lot tougher then I thought it would be..."

Lunaris seemed to have taken quite the hit judging by the way he had howled, but seemed to be as energetic as ever. As the dust cloud started to dissipate, the Mightyena looked around for his opponent, discovering that the Absol had stayed behind him after the dual Slash attack.

Absol seemed to be sizing up this new opponent, looking the Mightyena up and down. Perhaps he wasn't expecting to fight a fellow Dark type?

This is sort of funny. Lunaris had been Akinai's first captured Pokemon, back when she searching a remote area near Hearthome, looking for the location of wild Absol in the area. Instead of locating a powerful semi-legend, she had been ambushed by a very hungry Poochyena. Now here she was, over a year later and using it againt the Disaster Pokemon itself. She couldn't help but laugh a little at the irony.

Either way, that was the past. Time to focus on the present. "Good job, Lunaris! You aren't going to be able to hit it unless you concentrate though. Use Odor Sleuth to track down the correct image, Then strike with a Bite!"

Lunaris tried to stop fidgeting around a moment and closed his eyes, catching in the smells of the area. After all, illusions didn't have a scent; Pokemon do. His snapped his jaws, exercising them for the upcoming Bite.

"This guy is a lot tougher then I thought it would be," Akinai muttered.

"Well, it is the Disaster Pokemon," I reasoned.

Lunaris turned and snapped at the pair of Absol, unhappy that she'd been wounded. The Mightyena hadn't been expecting that attack, nor the opponent it was fighting, but that didn't mean he was going to go easy.

"Good job, Lunaris! You aren't going to be able to hit it unless you concentrate though. Use Odor Sleuth to track down the correct image, Then strike with a Bite!" Akinai called.

Lunaris closed his eyes and sniffed the air a couple times. His eyes shot back open and he lunged forwards. One of the Absol jumped forwards to intercept him, but he ignored it and passed straight through the clone, which faded like smoke. The Mightyena grasped the Absol's rear leg in his teeth, and the Disaster Pokemon yowled.

The cave began to shake unexpectedly. A line of rocks fell from the ceiling behind us, trapping us inside the cave completely. I sighed and shook my head.

"Looks like we'll have to keep moving forwards after this," I said. "Running isn't an option any more, so I hope you really are committed to catching this beastie."

The cave continued to shake, and a small cluster of rocks just above Lunaris fell, striking his on his back and legs. The Mightyena yowled, but didn't let go of the Absol. Despite this, I knew he had been wounded - he wasn't putting all of his weight on that leg anymore, which means he wouldn't be able to move as fast as usual any more.

“Wow, it actually worked.” Akinai stared at the two Pokemon incredulously. Working with Lunaris was like trying to play a wildcard sometimes; you never knew if he would stand still and listen or rush off after an opponent.

A sudden tremor rocked the room, making rocks fall from the ceiling. A clusted of them had fallen directly behind the Trainer and Ranger, blocking off escape.

"Looks like we'll have to keep moving forwards after this," Chainy commented. "Running isn't an option any more, so I hope you really are committed to catching this beastie."

“Never crossed my mind.” Akinai replied, staring at the wall. Did Absol do this? First an Ice move, then Electric, now Rock as well? It has to be a coincidence!

Another tremor struck, this time followed by a muffled yelp.

Akinai looked over at Lunaris. Sure enough, the second pair of rocks had struck the Mightyena's hind area. “Nope, no coincidence. This guy knows a wide variety of techniques for being a wild Pokemon.” If it grows wings or gets a transformation sequence, I'm outta here.

Lunaris whimpered a moment, yet held fast to Absol's hind leg. He was determined to stay attached, no matter what.

Absol, in turn, seemed to be trying it's best to break free from the grip. It had three claws and one horn free as well, which would leave Lunaris reduced to mincemeat if he stayed immobile.

Have Lunaris stay in close combat and get sliced to ribbons, or have him let go? Both had their advantages and disadvantages. Akinai could command Lunaris to tighten his grip; Mightyena had an extremely strong bite hold after all, and could to serious damage, maybe enough to slow down the Absol tremendously. If he bit too tight though, the bone could very well be shattered.

Akinai shook her head at this. She wanted to capture, not cripple it without need to.

“Nice job getting rid of the clone, Lunaris, but we can't fight this in close quarters! Use your hold to toss him into those rocks behind you, and get ready to dodge,” Akinai called out to Lunaris. Hopefully the Mightyena wasn't so badly that he couldn't jump.

Lunaris growled then began to tighten his grip, but only to secure the hold more. Swinging hard to his right, he attempted to swing the Absol straight towards the rocks, releasing his grip at the last second.

Akinai, in turn, quickly scanned the ground nearby for the Parkball she had discarded earlier, hoping that the sphere had not been crushed by the cave-in.

“Never crossed my mind," Akinai replied to my statement. She definitely wanted this Absol, which was fair. They were very powerful and intelligent creatures, as she was finding out the hard way during this battle.

My Trainer seemed lost in thought, watching as Lunaris grappled with the Absol, dodging or deflecting the glancing blows that the panicking Wild Pokemon was striking the Mightyena with. She nodded slightly as the Rock Tomb hit Lunaris, as if a suspicion had been confirmed.

“Nope, no coincidence. This guy knows a wide variety of techniques for being a wild Pokemon," she said to herself quietly.

"That's not surprising," I explained to her. "Pokemon at the Park are much stronger than out in the wild because we try to keep the Park constructive and friendly. The Wild Pokemon watch each other battle Trainers and pick up new techniques from that. They then teach each other and practice against each other, even passing on moves and Abilities to their children. The chances are good that this Absol actually learned the move from its mother, who learned it from a friend, who learned it from watching a Trainer battle a Golurk or something."

I wasn't sure if Akinai heard me, though - she was deep in thought. Her choice was obviously between close or long-range combat. The problem was that Absol excelled in close-range combat, but on the other hand Lunaris wasn't particularly good at using Special attacks.

Finally, she made her decision. “Nice job getting rid of the clone, Lunaris, but we can't fight this in close quarters!" she called out. "Use your hold to toss him into those rocks behind you, and get ready to dodge!"

Lunaris braced his feet and tossed the Absol with a powerful throw of his neck. The Disaster Pokemon was sent tumbling into a wall. It got to its feet and shook its mane before sending a blast of electricity towards Lunaris from its mouth. Fortunately, the Mightyena was able to jump to one side, and the Thunderbolt zapped past him to burn a scorch mark on the rock wall. The Absol growled in frustration and lowered its horn. White light began gathering around its mouth. It was charging an attack, one it didn't often use by the looks of it. Akinai would have to be very careful here, but it was a positive sign. The Absol obviously felt that it was being pushed into a corner.

“That would explain quite a bit,” Akinai answered. “From what I've read about Absol, they seem to use mainly Dark and Normal-type moves”. Great, I'm fighting a living elemental wheel. And all of the Park Pokemon were like this? Suddenly she felt much, much better about being able to befriend Kirlia rather then fighting. Knowing her luck, the tiny Pokemon would have fired ice from it's hands or something.

As if to prove her point, Absol began to ruffle it's fur, appearing for a moment to be larger then it usually was. It spat out a beam of lightning at Lunaris, payback for being roughly thrown into the wall. The beam rapidly headed towards the Mightyena, crackling as it went.

Lunaris seemed to be surprised to see the attack, expecting to see the Absol charge him instead. Still, he nimbly leaped out of the way, the Thunderbolt landing on the wall nearby. The air near the strike point seemed to fizzle a moment, then silence.

“Nice dodge!” Akinai called out to Lunaris triumphantly “Bet he wasn't expecting that to happen.” She shined her flashlight down to the ground again, taking one more look for her Parkball. Not long after doing so, a strange movement forced her to move the light back towards the fighting Pokemon.

Absol was growling louder then ever now, furious that it's attack had missed. It seemed to puff up even larger then before, and seemed to be concentrating. This time, a form of white light began to form around the Disaster Pokemon's mouth, slowly growing in size.

“Uh, last time I checked, a slow acting move usually meant something bad” Akinai stated nervously. Whatever it was, chances are it was going to hurt.

Lunaris watched the display as well, teeth bared in a snarl. He seemed to be favoring a leg, probably thanks to the Rock attack earlier. He still seemed ready to fight, though.

I don't think Lunaris can take whatever Absol is charging up. With that leg, it's doubtful he could dodge again either...if he decided to, that is. Problem is, none of them were probably able to do so. All three of them were hurting thanks to the Pokemon's wildly alternating attacks. Jade was the healthiest, but didn't have much area to move in thanks to adapting mainly to flight. So it was two choices: risk having Lunaris take one for the team, or switch out and hope someone else could absorb the blow.

Absol's attack seemed to be growing larger, as if to enforce the point that Akinai should choose, and choose quickly.

“Fine, then,” Akinai shouted “Lunaris, return!” she held up the Mightyena's Pokeball. Acting quickly, she threw out a second Ball. “Cryrosant, get ready to take some hits. Iron Defense, quickly!” She was not sure how well this would work.... Aggron were more suited to taking blunt hits, not elemental or beam attacks. Hopefully she would not regret this.

Cryrosant began to materialize once more, and appeared to brace herself to the ground. Closing her eyes a moment, the Aggron was covered in the same metallic sheen from before. She held her ground, and waited.

“Nice dodge! Bet he wasn't expecting that to happen,” Akinai exclaimed triumphantly. Her face soon fell when she saw the white glow emanating from the Dark-type's mouth.

“Uh, last time I checked, a slow acting move usually meant something bad,” she said nervously.

"That's not a bad thing to assume," I warned her. "Whenever a Pokemon takes some time to charge up an attack, the attack is going to either be strong, or one that the Pokemon isn't familiar with slash doesn't use very often."

“Fine, then,” Akinai shouted. “Lunaris, return!”

She held out the Mightyena's PokeBall and the Bite Pokemon returned in a flash of red plasma. A different PokeBall sailed back out and emitted a flash of white light, signaling Cryrosant's return to the field. Swapping Pokemon was a very good tactic as it kept the opponent on their feet, but it also allowed the Wild Pokemon to stack up some serious stat boosts. The Absol was looking tired, but it had some serious reinforcement behind it as well.

“Cryrosant, get ready to take some hits. Iron Defense, quickly!” Akinai ordered.

The Aggron started to glow silver, just like before. There were two competing lights in the tunnel, one white, one silver. The Absol slowly raised its head and opened its mouth at the same time. A torrent of stars burst out of its mouth, striking Cryrosant like machine gun fire. Cryrosant raised her arm to wards off the blows, but it didn't seem necessary - the stars weren't too damaging. The Absol growled frustratedly and began lashing its tail. Its red eyes began to flicker, as if it was predicting fire in Cryrosant's future.

“Well, color me surprised,” Akinai said, staring blankly at the stars weakly strike Cryrosant. The Absol could control much more powerful attacks, yet had trouble using Swift of all things? She shook her head at the insanity of it all. As the last stars faded away from sight, Akinai noticed a familiar, spherical shape nearby. “There you are!” Grabbing her discarded Parkball, she took another look at the field.

Absol looked absolutely furious to see Cryrosant once again, twitching it's tail from side to side. Whether the Pokemon would attempt to try the same ploy again or not, Akinai was not certain. It might be too angry to think properly...or biding it's time to strike.

Cryrosant, on the other hand, seemed to have calmed down. She had taken the Swift attack full-force, but didn't seem to have taken much damage. The Aggron lifted her tail slowly and crashed it on the ground, staring calmly at the Absol.

Looks like we might be able to do this after all, but at what cost? This was only the second Pokemon they had run into (well, second awake Pokemon), and it had done a serious beatdown on her team; she would have to look at Lunaris later, and Jade would scold her later for returning her back to her Ball. Granted, it was an Absol... Akinai thought over her next plan, and nodded slowly. Time to quicken things a bit more.

“Let's give it a little payback, shall we?" Akinai said calmly, looking the Absol over. "Cryrosant, use Iron Head!” she called out to her Aggron, placing the Parkball back in her pack. If she was lucky, the attack would keep Absol on the defensive.

Cryrosant gave a loud roar, and charged towards the Absol, keeping her head down. Within seconds, her head began to shimmer like quicksilver, and the Aggron quickened her speed.

“Well, color me surprised,” Akinai said, her eyes wide open. Apparently she hadn't been expecting the Absol to use Swift.

"It makes sense if you think about it," I replied as my Trainer bent down to reclaim her lost Park Ball. "Absol usually hit hard physically with blade-like attacks. I'd expect it to have trouble with a long-range rapid-fire technique like Swift."

And yet, it had been an intelligent move. Absol had been sprayed with Sand Attack multiple times, which meant its visibility was down. Swift never missed, so it had been a perfect move choice. However, with Cryrosant out, it wasn't a valid option any more. Pissing on the huge Steel-type would have done more damage.

Cryrosant calmly waited for her order, thumping her large, metal-plated tail on the ground. “Let's give it a little payback, shall we?" Akinai asked the large creature. "Cryrosant, use Iron Head!”

The Aggron dashed forwards. The silver light on her skull helmet grew incandescent, and the Absol shied away. Unfortunately, the Dark-type wasn't fast enough. Cryrosant plowed into the Absol, making contact with its chest and smashing it into one of the tunnel walls. The Absol wailed, but the cry had a tone of defiance in it. Before I could warn Akinai, the Dark-type opened its mouth, and tongues of flame billowed over Cryrosant. The Steel-type screeched as the Absol's Flamethrower attack wrapped around her body and made it far too hot for the poor Steel-type. I could empathise - I hated the heat.

Once again, the Absol had proven to be a clever fighter. It had used a super-effective move, but more importantly it had waited until Cryrosant got close, making it much more like that the Flamethower wouldn't miss. Despite this devastating counter-attack, the Absol was started to look tired. Its chest was heaving and its eyes were half-closed. The time for Akinai to attempt a capture would be soon.

Akinai worried a moment as she saw Cryrosant strike the Absol dead-on, then keep going into yet another wall. Perhaps she had overdone it a bit... once she saw that both forms were moving though, she breathed a sigh of relief. Thank the gods, I was afraid that- wait, what is that red light? Akinai heard a cry of warning from Chainy, but it was far too late.

Absol, still pinned by Cryrosant, blew out a long burst of flame straight at the Aggron's face. Despite being thrown around so much, the Pokemon still seemed to have many tricks left up it's sleeve. The Pokemon would have no chance to dodge at such a close range.

Cryrosant reeled back a few steps, her steel plating not helping to shield the attack at all. In fact, it seemed to be making things worse. The flame burst was creating an effect similar to a blacksmith weakening a slab of iron in the forge, which was pretty much what was happening to the Aggron's armor now.

“...You know what, I give up being surprised by this guy,” Akinai sighed, looking at Chainy. “It's used almost all of the other elements in this fight, so yeah, why not Fire?” Move over Eevee, there's a new jack of all trades. Her Glaceon would have a fit if she saw this fight, that's for sure!

Akinai stole another look over at Cryrosant, and was glad that she had remembered to buy some Potions before setting out. Whether or not she would have any left after this battle was the real question, though. Least the Absol seemed to be royally hurting as well.

Absol, if anything, looked even worse off than Cryrosant. It appeared to be using quite a bit of effort to keep standing, and it's red eyes were beginning to droop. Still, the wild Pokemon seemed to want to continue the fight.

“Well, here comes the hard part,” Akinai muttered to herself. She then turned to her Aggron, ready to issue the next command. “I know you're hurting at the moment, Cryrosant, but we're almost done! Let's finish this with a Tackle.” she took a deep breath, then continued on, “Remember, we want to capture it, not faint it. Try to not go all out.”

Cryrosant staggered a moment, but nodded to Akinai. She made her way to the Absol, moving into a shouder-check position, and began to move faster. Since Absol was so close to the wall, a full-body tackle seemed unnecessary.

“You know what? I give up being surprised by this guy. It's used almost all of the other elements in this fight, so yeah, why not Fire?” Akinai asked me rhetorically.

"It does seem remarkably knowledgeable, even for a Park Pokemon," I admitted.

Cryrosant grudgingly backed off, allowing the Absol to drop to the ground. The Dark-type's Flamethrower cut off, and the Absol wobbled on its feet, barely able to stand up. In fairness, the Aggron's armour was scorched and slightly melted too - Cryrosant wasn't in the best of health either.

“I know you're hurting at the moment, Cryrosant, but we're almost done! Let's finish this with a Tackle. Remember, we want to capture it, not faint it. Try to not go all out," Akinai called to her Pokemon.

Cryrosant rumbled and lowered her head and shoulder, preparing to ram the Absol. The Dark-type was busy panting, trying to get its breath back, so it didn't see the Aggron moving steadily towards it. It sure felt it, though - the cave shuddered as the large Steel-type moved methodically forwards. It rammed its shoulder into the Absol, crushing it up against the wall again. The Absol yelped before taking a deep breath. I didn't see what happened next, because Cryrosant's body was obscuring my vision, but I heard a detonation and a cracking sound and Cryrosant was suddenly blasted backwards. The Aggron fell to one knee, panting, and I could see a large crack in the front of her armour. I was impressed at the power the Absol could summon, but it wouldn't be able to do so for much longer. The Dark-type had collapsed on the ground, almost out of energy.

“Impressive, “Akinai muttered after seeing Cryrosant get blasted away “Even backed into a corner, it's still using its head.” She looked over at the Aggron and couldn't help but wince; armor or not, that attack had to be painful.

Cryrosant appeared to be having trouble standing up, and was holding one claw to her chest, as if trying to assess the damage. A large, jagged crack had formed there, as if someone had smashed there with a hammer. She weakly rose, then turned her gaze to Akinai.

Absol, on the other hand, wasn't so lucky. It had finally collapsed to the ground, but was still conscious. Whether it was the Rock Smash move or Cryrosan't attack that had worn it out, Akinai was not sure.

Now seemed like the perfect time to end this. Akinai went over to her pack and began to rummage through it, looking for another Superball and a Super Potion for Cryrosant once the fight was over. She paused upon seeing the Parkball once more though, and took another look at the weakened wild Pokemon. As far as she knew, Absol didn't evolve. And Chainy had mentioned before that only Superballs could be used on those that evolved... did that mean that a Parkball would work no problem here?

I'll try this one now, and if doesn't work I'll use another Ball, Akinai decided, grabbing the Parkball and playing the Super Potion near the top of her pack.

“You did fantastic, Cryrosant,” Akinai said her Aggron, moving a few steps to better her aim “Let's finish this.”

Taking careful aim, Akinai drew her arm back and threw the Parkball, aiming at Absol.

“Impressive. Even backed into a corner, it's still using its head," Akinai muttered.

I chuckled. "Perhaps even literally, I didn't see what happened."

Akinai pulled out a Park Ball and looked over to her Aggron. “You did fantastic, Cryrosant,” she said. “Let's finish this.”

She tossed the ball towards the Absol. The sphere tapped the Disaster Pokemon on its shoulder, and the Pokemon was sucked inside in a flash of red light. The ball wiggled on the ground for a couple seconds before laying still. The capture button on the front of the device lit up, and a tone echoed throughout the cave, confirming the capture.

"Congratulations on your capture," I said, walking over and picking up the ball. I stowed it away next to the Kirlia's ball before turning back to Akinai. "We'd probably better move on; I wouldn't make any large bets regarding this tunnel's stability after that battle."

As if to emphasise my point, Cryrosant gently thumped her tail on the floor and the entire tunnel shook. We needed to get outside to avoid any more cave-ins.
