“Hmm...I’m alright for now. Although...” She started to dig into her bag. “Everyone at home will want to see this.”

She pulled out a digital camera and snapped a picture of the Kecleon. Startled by the camera’s flash, Kecleon immediately vanished, leaving only its blue stripe visible. I watched as the Pokémon ran off and finally climbed into one of the trees.

“I hope you got a good picture,” I said to Miho.

The Park Warden was always looking for pictures of rare Pokémon to add to the Park’s catalogue. He would pay a bit of money for Miho’s picture, that is, if it turned out right. I remembered how someone had taken a picture of a Mew, only to find that he had only managed to capture a bright yellow bubble when the picture had been developed.

“Well, let’s head out,” I continued.

We walked over to a nearby tree. It looked like someone had previously slathered honey on the tree and finally left. I wondered if a Pokémon would come by while we were near the tree. As if to confirm my suspicions, a Heracross flew up to the tree and started to suck on the honey. Heracross were known for their love of sucking up sweet nectars such as honey and sap. I pointed the large beetle out to Miho.

“Do you want to try capturing a Heracross?”

Heracross were the only Pokémon with the type combination of Bug/Fighting. They weren’t very popular in tournaments, however. I never really understood why, but I assumed it was because of it extreme weakness to flying types and slow speed.

The group continues on its way, soon coming across a tree slathered with honey. Miho smiles a little as she sees it; it was a really popular way to try and capture rare bug types. Sure enough, a Heracross soon flew over and began suckling the honey. Miho thinks as Dee asked her if she wanted to capture it.

“Hm...no, I don’t think so. Bug Pokémon aren’t really my specialty.”

She briefly thinks about trying to get a photo of the Pokémon, but decides against it: it would be rude to disturb the poor Heracross while it was eating.

“Well, I guess we should continue then,” I said, stating the obvious.

Before I could make a step, a large ladybug, more than half my size bumped into me, knocking me off balance. After regaining my composure, I turned back towards Miho.

“I know you said that Bug types weren’t your specialty, but how about a Ledyba?”

The Pokémon floated back up into the sky and paused for a moment to see if we were paying any attention to it.

Before they can continue, a large ladybug pokemon enters the fray, obviously looking for attention. Miho smiles a little as she tries to suppress a laugh, looking at Dee. “If we just ignore it, it’ll leave us alone soon enough. Let’s keep going and see what else comes our way.”

“If we just ignore it, it’ll leave us alone soon enough. Let’s keep going and see what else comes our way.” Miho said with a faint smile on her face.

I nodded and started walking once again. In the distance, I could see a tree with something hanging off of it. Being the curious person that I am, I decided to see what it was, with Miho following. As I got closer to the tree, it became obvious what the tree was. It was a Pineco.

Pineco were strange Pokémon. Even though they shared a striking resemblance with pine cones, they were labeled by Pokémon Professors as a Bug-type instead of a Grass-type. It was an odd occurrence that baffled lots of trainers. Another strange characteristic among Pineco was that they would often explode at random times for no reason at all. It would take a bit of care when approaching the Pokémon to start a battle, but it was well worth it when successful.

“So,” I said to Miho. “Are you interested in a Pineco?”

I watched the pinecone-like Pokémon to make sure it didn’t explode on us.

The two leave the ladybug Pokémon, hearing it fly away with a loud buzz soon after. The groups next target is a tree, from which hangs a pine-cone like Pokémon.

Miho looks up at it, sighing a little. “Great...a Pineco.” Pineco have a large tendency to blow up with little to no notice, something Miho finds to risky in a Pokémon.

Dee turns to Miho, asking her if she has any interest in catching the bug-type. She thinks for a second, looking at it, before shaking her head.

“Let’s leave it be. If that thing goes off here, it could upset other Pokémon.”

“Let’s leave it be,” Miho said. “If that thing goes off here, it could upset other Pokémon.”

I nodded. We didn’t want that to happen. Imagine how many Pokémon I would have to capture and calm down. I shuddered at the thought of it.

“You’re right,” I said, trying to rid the image of a forest overrun with rampaging Pokémon out of my mind. “Let’s continue on down towards that stream.”

I pointed to the bank on the other end of the forest area. As we walked towards the small stream of water, I could swear that I heard something following behind us. Every now and then, I would hear the sound of a leaf crackling. It wasn’t until Luxray nudged my leg to notify me that something was behind us that I realized that my suspicions were correct. I turned my head slightly, and sure enough, Pineco was right behind us. The pinecone Pokémon smiled cheerfully as it bounced along behind us. Without stopping, I whispered to Miho what I saw, making sure the Pokémon didn’t notice that I’d seen it.

“Psst,” I whispered to the trainer beside me. “Pineco’s following us. Do you want to go ahead and battle it? Or do you want to use a Pokedoll?”

We continued to walk while I waited for the trainer to answer. Pineco continued to follow us with a big smile on its face.

The two continue towards a small stream of water, a sound of a leaf being stepped on, or a twig snapping, following the two every now and again. Miho sighs softly as she realises the Pokémon is following them. Deciding to see if it gets bored, she just walks on. However, soon Dee notices and looks back sneakily.

“Pineco’s following us. Do you want to go ahead and battle it? Or do you want to use a Pokedoll?”

Miho smiles a little. “Well...Pineco’s obviously playing with us. It would be rude to just run away anymore.” She keeps walking, not even looking back as she whispers to Christine. “I want you to surprise it. Take a second to use calm mind, then teleport right behind it and hit it with Magical Leaf.”

Christine nods a little, closing her eyes. Calming thoughts enter her head which allow her to focus more, making her ready to take on any foe. She then quickly falls into a ballerina pose, sparkles covering her body. She then suddenly disappears with a flash, reappearing behind the hopefully surprised Pineco. Working fast, she uses her psychic abilities to raise a few leaves from around them. The leaves soon glow with rainbow energy as Christine sends them spinning around herself a few times before dashing at the bug type.

Miho smiles a little. Calm Mind was an amazing skill for getting a Pokémon focused, which most trainers used to make their Pokémon’s attacks more powerful. However, its real use was to make the user’s attacks more controlled, meaning Christine’s attack had less chance of hurting the Pineco to much. She also knew that Magical leaf was a move that didn’t affect bug type Pokémon much. Again, the point of the attack was more to surprise Pineco, not to necessarily hurt it.

    OOC: Gender?

It seemed like Miho had already noticed that Pineco was following us before I did. She started to whisper something to the Gardevoir behind us. The next thing I knew, Gardevoir struck a ballerina pose and instantly vanished nowhere (behind the Pineco, to be more exact). Leaves behind Gardevoir started to swirl around the humanoid Pokémon as they glowed with all sorts of colors. After powering up her attack a bit more, Gardevoir dashed towards Pineco.

Pineco was happily following behind the two trainers. They seemed to be whispering to each other. The Pokémon wondered what they were talking about. Suddenly, the Pokémon that was walking beside the female trainer disappeared. Pineco was confused as to what was going on, but it realized what was happening when it was hit in the back by a bunch of leaves that were imbued with psychic energy.

Pineco groaned a bit when the Magical Leaf attack hit. The attack didn’t hurt it, but it did cause a bit of discomfort. The trainer must have been trying to battle it. Pineco turned around to face the Pokémon. It had its own set of attacks available. Suddenly, it started to spin rapidly. The spinning bug-type pinecone charged at the Gardevoir. It didn’t have to go very far since Gardevoir had just used an attack and as a result, was already pretty close to it.

I recognized the attack as Gyro Ball. Gyro Ball was extremely hard to dodge, and managed to successfully hit its target most of the time. The steel type attack damaged the target depending on the difference betwwen the user's and the target's speed.

Magical Leaf was a direct hit, making both Christine and Miho smile. It didn’t hurt the Pineco, meaning the two could hopefully keep wearing it down. However, that idea is dashed as it begun to spin in place before launching itself towards the Gardevoir. Miho curses softly under her breath as she thinks: Gyro ball could be a powerful move, and was very difficult to dodge. She could either have Christine take the hit, something no decent trainer should strive for, or attempt to repulse the spinning bug type. Option B seemed like the better idea.

    “Quick! Use Confusion!”

The move wouldn’t be as powerful as it could be. It would normally take a few seconds to build up the power to launch any psychic attack. However, Christine quickly falls into her battle pose, raising both hands to her chest as both she and Pineco begin to glow bright blue. If the move was quick enough, she should be able to throw Pineco out of the way before Gyro ball hit. If not, it could be a powerful blow. Miho crosses her fingers slightly, whispering under her breath as she watches.

    vs. Pineco BP1

“Quick! Use Confusion!” Miho commanded her Pokémon.

Gardevoir quickly entered battle mode. She raised both of her hands to her chest and started to glow, along with Pineco. It took me a while to figure out Miho’s plan, but I realized that she was trying to throw Pineco off course so that the Pokémon wouldn’t hit her Pokémon. It was a brilliant strategy that was sure to work.

As Gardevoir struggled to knock Pineco off course, Pineco continued to move at a rapid speed. After a few seconds, however, Gardevoir’s grip was shattered. I watched as the bright blue aura that was surrounding Pineco broke into hundreds of pieces and dissolved into thin air. The attack, however, did successfully knock Pineco off course by thirty degrees. The Pokémon flew past Gardevoir.

I thought Gardevoir was out of danger from the attack, but I soon realized that I was wrong. Pineco made a U-turn and started to spin towards Gardevoir again. Only this time, the pinecone Pokémon was homing in on Gardevoir from behind. Gardevoir would probably not realize Pineco’s move, so it would be up to Miho to be her Pokémon’s eyes.

Pineco decreased the distance the distance between him and Gardevoir. After a while, they were only about a foot away from each other. I wondered what Miho’s next move would be. Whatever it was, I was sure she’d be able to come up with a good solution.

The confusion tactic worked well; Pineco flew safely to the side of Christine. However, it followed up by turning behind her, soon speeding towards her again. Miho watches as she thinks. “Confusion wasn’t strong enough...so...” She nods a little. “Christine! Start building up the energy for a psychic attack. Then, when I say now, teleport a meter behind yourself.”

Christine nods as she falls into her battle stance, beginning to glow blue as she builds energy. Her body shimmers softly, glittering while she prepares to teleport herself at the same time, as the bug type rocket’s towards her, Miho waiting for the right second. “Now Christine!”

If the timing was right, then Christine should be able to warp behind Pineco right as it’s about to hit her, leaving no time for it to counter attack. She should also be in the perfect position to grab it with a Psychic attack and, with any luck, stop its gyro ball. Miho crosses her fingers a little, watching with anticipation as her plan takes effect.

    vs. Pineco BP2

Miho’s next tactic was to lure Pineco towards Gardevoir. The psychic Pokémon would then teleport at the last minute and use Psychic to try and stop the spinning Pokémon. It was interesting to see how this would turn out. Luckily for me, I didn’t have to wait long to see the results of Miho’s plan.

Pineco was headed for Gardevoir at a high speed. There was less than a foot of distance between them. I could only imagine what was going through Pineco’s mind as he approached his opponent. Was he sure that his attack would be successful? Or was he thinking of a backup plan in case things went wrong. I was probably thinking too much of this battle.

As Pineco eased closer to Gardevoir, she charged up as much psychic energy as she could. She didn’t have much time to do anything because now, Pineco was about to hit her. On her trainer’s command, she teleported behind Pineco, breaking the bug Pokémon’s concentration. As a result, Pineco’s speed decreased making it easier for Gardevoir who launched her stored energy towards the Pokémon. Pineco was lifted into the air and slammed back down. The Pokémon winced in pain as it hit the ground, clouded by loose dust and leaves.

After lying there for a bit, Pineco lifted himself back up. He bounced up into the air and turned at an angle. The Pokémon was headed straight for Gardevoir. Suddenly, Pineco’s body was bent backwards, to reveal a set of sharp teeth. The sight was disturbing, yet I couldn’t look away from it. The battle was starting to get interesting. Pineco was using Bug Bite, an attack that posed a great threat towards Gardevoir.

Miho’s watches as her plan works, successfully ending the gyro ball attack. However, the attack clearly had little effect on the Pineco. She clenches her fists a little, knowing it will soon launch another attack, as a leaf floats down by her face. Her eyes widen as she realises something: she’s been going about this fight all wrong. She had been trying to fight a primarily defensive Pokémon with only brute force, from a Pokemon with a type disadvantage. Only using Christine’s power, this fight would go on forever: Pineco was defiantly relentless enough. She grins slowly. “Dee...I suggest you watch this...because this is REALLY going to be cool.”

She smiles. “Christine, I want you to use Psychic to pull as many leaves in as possible. For now, just keep them surrounding you.”

Christine nods, Pineco already getting up to release its next attack. She quickly builds up her energy, eyes closing. All around her, from the tree’s, the ground, still in midair, hundreds upon hundreds of leaves begin to glow light blue. Due to the size and weight of the leaves, it’s easy to bring them in for the focused Psychic type, swirling around her, almost completely obscuring her, as Pineco dives towards her in a powerful Bug Bite attack.

Miho grins proudly, half at herself, half at Christine for managing the feat. “Say hello to the most powerful Magical Leaf attack this park has seen.” She then smiles. “Now Christine...ATTACK!”

Most Pokémon using the Magical leaf attack build up anywhere from ten to twenty leaves, which leaves them able to defend themselves and sustain the attack for longer. However, due to the sheer number surrounding the Gardevoir, Miho knew the attack couldn’t last longer than a few seconds, at most. Still, Christine sweeps her hand forwards, hundreds of leaves catapulting themselves at Pineco. She aims to have the attack attack sweeps him from one side, before quickly turning around and hitting him from the other. Finally, the torrent of leaves would swing upwards in the sky before smashing down on the Pineco as hard as Christine possibly can. Miho crosses her fingers; no matter what happens after this attack, Christine would be too tired to defend herself. This one had to count.

    vs. Pineco BP3

So far, things were going just as Miho planned. Pineco had abandoned using Gyro Ball and was not resorting to a difference tactic. The Pokémon had lunged himself towards Gardevoir with his teeth exposed and ready to take a bite out of Gardevoir. Since Gardevoir was a Psychic type Pokémon, the attack was sure to cause a lot of damage if it hit. Hopefully, Miho could prevent that from happening.

With the Pineco headed straight towards her Pokémon, Miho commanded Gardevoir to collect as many leaves as she could. The Pokémon used her psychic energy to gather up almost any leaf within a mile radius. I watched as the Pokémon was hard at work, moving as fast as she could to get the attack in before Pineco’s Bug Bite attack could land. Then, Miho turned towards me and started to grin.

“Say hello to the most powerful Magical Leaf attack this park has seen,” she said with a confident grin still on her face. “Now, Christine…ATTACK!”

The hundreds of leaves that Gardevoir had collected were released in a sudden burst of energy. Even though the attack probably wouldn’t last for long, it would make it up in strength. The leaves swept Pineco from one side, then the other side. Finally, the leaves went into the air and came bashing down on Pineco. The Pokémon plopped down onto the ground. Even though Grass-type attacks were usually ineffective against Bug-type Pokémon, Extreme Magical Leaf (that’s I decided to call it) had done a bit more damage than a normal Magical Leaf attack would do.

Meanwhile, Gardevoir started to breathe erratically. Then, the Pokémon fell down on one knee, still breathing hard. That last attack must have taken quite a toll on the Pokémon. Luckily for Miho, Pineco was also in a daze and didn’t seem to be getting up any time soon. That mean, she and Gardevoir would have a chance to regroup and think of another strategy.

OOC: there's less than that on the MCR, isn't there?

The extra powerful magical leaf attack worked perfectly, even managing to daze Pineco a little. However, Christine was left tired and drained, as Miho had predicted. It would be cruel to force the Pokémon to fight any longer. Miho grabs two familiar balls from her belt, thinking in her mind how much she’s been setting up with Christine and then switching to Yuna.

“Alright Christine, take a rest. You deserve it.”

The Gardevoir disappears in a flash of red, Miho smiling a little as she returns the ball to it’s holster. “You did incredible...” She then looks at the Pineco, grinning a little. “Alright then Yuna, your up!”

The slender dragon type appears in a white light, letting out a slight squeal at being released. Miho smiles as she rolls her eyes slightly. “Alright, let’s set it up. I want you to use Thunder Wave”.

Sparks begin to flare up around the dragon type as she stares at the Pineco, preparing her attack. She soon launches forward quickly towards the target, aiming to paralyse it.

    vs. Pineco BP4

Miho decided not to make her Gardevoir battle any longer. She recalled the Pokémon and replaced her with Dragonair. It was a smart move. Gardevoir probably wouldn’t be able to go on in battle any longer. It was most likely in her best interest to be recalled.

Miho released Dragonair and commanded the dragon type to use Thunder Wave. Dragonair launched herself forward. Sparks began to surround her body as she headed for the Pineco, who was still laid out in a daze. The attack wouldn’t be enough to hurt Pineco, but it couldn’t paralyze it.

At the last second, before Dragonair’s attack could hit, Pineco hopped back into an upright position and started to spin. Then, like a drill, the Pokémon spun underground. A hole about Pineco’s width was all that remained. Dragonair was knocked off balance by Pineco’s last minute dodge and hit the ground headfirst. I could see where Pineco was spinning. The ground sort of collapse as the Pokémon moved underground. Then, it stopped towards a nearby tree.

“Over there!” I exclaimed. I pointed to the tree that Pineco had reappeared at. The Pokémon surfaced and was high in the air. Then, he inverted and aimed his body towards Dragonair. He was probably planning to bash into the Dragonair with his head.

Yuna launches itself at Pineco, aiming to paralyze him before he can regain his balance. Unfortunately, it quickly hopped up and drilled down into the ground. The avoidance is enough to knock Dragonair off balance. Both Miho and Dee watch as the Pineco leaves a trail of disturbed ground, settling by a tree.

“Over there!” Dee shouted as it jumped out of the ground and launches itself towards Yuna in a Headbutt attack. Miho smiles a little as she sees it.

    “Perfect...Yuna! Thunder Wave again!”

The dragon type regains its composure as sparks quickly build across her body. She turns to the quickly oncoming bug type before launching herself at him, letting out a loud “Dragonair!” as the two head towards each other in mid air.

    vs. Pineco BP5

“Perfect...Yuna! Thunder Wave again!” Miho commanded her Pokémon as Pineco resurfaced from underground.

Dragonair nodded and headed straight towards Pineco. Just like last time, her fur glistened as electric sparks started to surround her body. There was a faint crackling and buzzing sound. Before Pineco could completely come up from under the ground, Dragonair had collided with him, knocking him into the nearby tree. Sparks briefly emanated from Pineco’s body as the paralysis took over him.

Pineco slowly spun back to an upright position. He started to spin really fast once again. Pretty soon, he had managed to spin his way underground like a tunneling drill. This time around, however, he did not come up, but rather, stayed where he was. I couldn’t see any trail of collapsed ground like a Pokémon using Dig usually leaves behind. So, he must not have been moving at all.

There were only two possibilities of what was happening. Either, Pineco had been rendered immobile by paralysis, or he’d tunneled so deep that we couldn’t see where he was. Either way, Miho would have to try and make the right choice.

Miho grins as Yuna collides with the Pineco, sending it flying back. Sparks fly over his body as paralysis takes over. Yuna slides back into place quickly, looking proud of herself.

Pineco soon regains his balance, beginning to spin around quickly. It descends into the ground quickly with a dig attack. However, rather than move under the ground, it seemingly stays in place. Miho thinks as she watches it, trying to decide weather or not Yuna should move.

    “Alright...lets use Dragon Dance Yuna.”

The Dragonair nods a little, eyes shining as she rises in the air slightly. Her body begins to twist and coil, sliding in and out of herself. Soon she’s moving almost to fast for the eye to see, suddenly driving her entire body up into the air with a loud “Dragonair!”
