The Newbie Writing Competition ‘10​

Welcome, fellow URPG writers! I’m proud to announce that this is the first URPG writing competition on BMG. URPG activity here has been on the rise, and I found that this would be a perfect time to host a small competition for you writers. Now, don’t be offended by the term “newbie,” everybody. The URPG requires stories to be at a certain standard, and this competition is to simply get you used to writing these type of stories. All URPG writers had to start somewhere, but only a few had the opportunity to start their URPG writing careers by taking part in a contest exclusively for the inexperienced.

Past Winners:

2007: Phantom Kat (Hosted by FireflyK at Pe2K, this was the first time somebody had hosted a competition aimed at newer, less experienced writers.)

2009: Metallic Houndoom (Hosted by Galleon at Pe2K, this competition was open for anybody who considered themselves newbie or inexperienced writers. There were no restrictions.)

2010: YOU?!

How it Will Work:

Tomorrow, April 23rd, I will randomly pick a Pokémon from the Simple Tier. This is the Pokémon participants will write for in their stories. The only restrictions on your story will be that you must aim to capture this Simple Pokémon and only that Pokémon. If your story has a successful capture, the Pokémon is yours to keep. If you already have this Pokémon in your stats, then I’m sorry. You can always trade it at the Trading Station.

The Simple Pokemon to be written for is Shellos!

Deadlines:

- The deadline to get your stories written and submitted is May 5th!

The extended deadline is Sunday, May 9th!

Prizes:

1st place: One Complex Pokémon with a TM of your choice. You will also have a permanent place in the Hall of Fame.

2nd place: One Hard Pokémon with a TM of your choice.

3rd place: One Medium Pokémon with a TM of your choice.

Guidelines/Rules:

• This contest is open to both BMG and Pe2K URPG members who are URPGing on BMG.
  
  
• You must have not caught more than one Pokémon through stories. If you did capture one story Pokémon, it must be in the Medium rank or lower. So if you captured a Pokémon in the Hard rank, for example, you cannot participate.
  
  
• The amount of Mart Pokémon in your stats does not effect you in any way.
  
  
• If you have restarted your stats and had captured more than one Pokémon or a Pokémon above the Medium rank through stories in your old stats, you cannot participate, even if you haven’t captured any story Pokémon through your new stats.
  
  
• If you capture more than one Pokémon through stories or a story Pokémon above Medium rank at any point during the competition, your entry will be disqualified.
  
  
• Participants can vote, but they cannot for their own story.
  
  
• Stories written and posted before the posting of this thread cannot be entered.
  
  
• Stories don't have to be graded or successful in the capture to be able to qualify. Failed and un-graded stories will be allowed to enter. All stories, however, must be finished before the deadline.
  
  
• Stories can be edited before and after the deadline.
  
  
• The story can be as short or long as you wish. However, keep in mind the minimum character count of 5K for a Simple Pokémon.
  
  
• All stories must be posted on, and only on, BMG. The title should have (NWC) or (Newbie Writing Competition) in the title. This will make finding the entries and adding them to the list easier.
  
  
• Any grader can grade NWC entries. Also, if the author wishes, comments may also be posted.

Voting:

Just like the prizes, this will be determined based upon the number of entries. If there are many entries, about twenty, the voting will be split into rounds (with possible prize money for the winner of the round.) If there aren’t that many entries, voting will only consist of one round.

Read the stories in the round(s), and then pick the three you thought were the best. You must provide a short summary (short can mean a sentence or two, if you wish) for each of the three stories to assure that you read them. Rate the three stories from 1st place to 3rd place.

Money for the voters will depend on the number of stories per round(s) and possibly the length of the stories.

You don’t have to be an entrant of the contest in order to vote.

Please PM all votes to me with the title “NWC Votes.”

Remember, tomorrow I will post the randomly-picked Simple Pokemon writers will get to write for. Keep your eyes on the thread. Also, tomorrow, I will announce the deadline for getting your stories in.

That'll depend on the deadline I'll give tomorrow and how long the voting lasts. If it's multiple rounds, it might last for two or three weeks. If it's one round, it won't last for that long.

Alright, I usually take a day or two to plan out my story before writing. So just making sure the contest wasnt that short. Thanks for the info by the way.

Please let it be Metapod or Kakuna. I would love to see what people would write to create a creative and epic story in order to catch one of these guys!
