Haunter pulled a face at the sound of the Solosis cry filling the area; apparently, it didn’t like Psychic types, because it went incorporeal the moment it heard the Player go off. It wasn’t too surprising; Haunter were part Poison as well as Ghost, so even though it would have a type advantage over a Solosis, the Solosis would also have a type advantage over it. Haunter were more the prankster type than the fighting type anyways, so it wasn’t a shock that it would choose to flee rather than hang around and possibly battle.

Unfortunately, there was no response to the Solosis Disc yet again. After playing it, the PokePlayer automatically ejected the Disc. I was getting ready to apologize for the bad luck Siless had had with both his Discs, but movement from inside the cave we’d just left cut me off. I looked over to see yet another Ghost Pokemon peeking outside at us; a Golett. The golem-like Pokemon didn’t seem very keen on coming outside, but something must have piqued its interest to keep it hanging around. I glanced over at Siless and asked, “What’s the verdict?”

It seemed the final use of the Solosis disc got the attention of a Golett. I… really didn't know much about these Pokémon, and while the thought of a ghost-type did interest me, I still wanted to see if I could find a Psychic-type instead. Perhaps if I was more researched in this Pokémon, I would have more interest in it, but I could always come back later if I wanted one. All it cost was a bit of time, money, and effort.

"I think I'll pass this one up," I told Sara. The run was mostly over, but there were still a couple chances left to find something. And, if nothing else showed up, I was pretty satisfied with the couple of Pokémon I had already picked up.

It seemed Golett was more than willing to remain Wild, as it vanished back into the cave when Siless said he would pass it up. We started off after that, heading towards one of the wooded areas where certain Psychic Pokemon made their home. We were headed down one of the paths heading toward the woods when I heard a rustling in the grass to the left and rear of us. I paused and glanced back in time to see a flash of brown. I shot a glance at Flutter, who simply took flight and flew over to where the grass had now stopped rustling. She then shook free a layer of clear scales from her upper body; these wouldn’t inflict any status on whatever was following us, but would flush it out of hiding.

It took a few moments, but eventually the itchy irritants scattered over the grass caused our stalker to hastily emerge from its hiding place. It turned out to be another Baltoy; why it was following us was a mystery, but now that it was in the open, it seemed uncertain as it slowly spun in place.

“I wonder why it was following us?” I asked no one in particular as Flutter returned to my shoulder, pleased with her success. I patted her head with a smile and shot Siless a look. “What’s your call?”

The prospect of a second Baltoy was interesting, I supposed, but I preferred to have the chance to train up the Baltoy I already had before grabbing a second one. Perhaps if it had a split evolution, but Baltoy only evolved into Claydol, and I didn't want to double up on it before I was fully aware of its capabilities.

"Let's keep moving. Two Baltoy in one trip is probably a bit much to be taking out. Maybe if I knew someone who wanted one or something, but I'd rather focus on the one I already caught." There wasn't really much of a run left to find other Pokémon, but even then I didn't really want to capture one Pokémon solely to focus on another because they had the exact same capabilities.

As Gaard readied his first move, the Munna's eyes glinted dangerously, as if she had overheard something important. Unfortunately for both of them, it was Scizor who reacted first. Dashing towards the wild Psychic-type, he slashed forward at Munna in a cross, slicing at the Pokemon. Munna shrinked back, both from the pain and trying to retreat from her attacker.

Gaard leaped forward as well, though his target was Gastly. He launched right into his Taunt attack, riling up the Ghost Pokemon as it tried to strike at the Absol only for the Disaster Pokemon hop out of the way at the last second. As the Gastly grew angrier, Gaard appeared to grow prouder in his actions to anger the Pokemon.

Finally having enough, Gastly shot a large electrical bolt towards the Absol, the attack powered by both his frustration and anger. The Thunderbolt coursed through Gaard's body, causing the Absol to yelp as he was steadily shocked.

Munna was finally able to act, due to the others having just used their attacks and still recovering before being able to act again. A shimmering blue barrier began to form around the Psychic-type, and began to stretch out to surround Gastly as well, protecting both of them. Munna appeared pleased with her current strategy, and looked over at the other team as if daring them to attack once more.

Gaard shrugged off the Thunderbolt, but not before using some of the electricity to help power up his next move. The yellow charge that coated his body transferred to a darker blue shade, and fired back towards the Gastly. Before it could strike the wild Pokemon though, the attack was successfully blocked by the barrier surrounding Gastly, causing the Pokemon to stick out his tongue at Gaard as it mocked the Absol for his failed attack.

Akinai, recognizing the barrier for what it was, silently cursed to herself. That could only be Safeguard, a technique that shielded the user's team from status-inducing moves. That meant that not only could she not enfeeble Gastly, but Eric would not be able to do the same to Munna as well. It was clear now: at least one of them was playing this battle on each side.

Munna acted as well, opening her large mouth and fired off several sound-waves towards Scizor. The waves were razor-sharp, but still did minimal damage to the Steel-type.

Still, Eric didn't appear too happy with Munna's choice of attacks; in fact, he seemed annoyed despite the fact that Normal-type moves would hardly put a chink in Scizors natural armor. "All right next use a Light Screen so that Absol won't take as much damage from anything Gastly does, and then follow up with a Bug Bite," he commanded, pointing over at Munna.

Akinai was surprised by Eric's current choice of attacks, though this was a fortunate change. From what she had heard in the past, her teammate was a purely offensive attacker; commanding something like Light Screen was almost the exact opposite of an attacking. Still, it would help against both Munna and Gastly, since most Ghost and Psychic Pokemon relied on special moves.

“Don't get too overconfident when that Light Screen goes up, Gaard,” Akinai warned her Absol, earning a dismissive snort from both Gaard and Jade in unison. As the most cautious member of her team, the Absol was well known for looking before he leaped, even a second or third time if the situation could help it. If there was one thing that could never be said about Gaard, it was that he was far from overconfident.

Once Gaard managed to regain his composure, Akinai readied her next command. “Let's go with Sucker Punch, then go with Hidden Power,” she said to Gaard, pointing at Gastly. The second attack was a complete wildcard for anyone who had not seen Gaard use Hidden Power before, since it would be one of any type in existence save for Normal. Plus, this would let the Absol release the rest of the electricity it had built up from both Gastly's Thunderbolt and his own failed Thunder Wave. It was possible that it would do more damage because of this, but at the very least it would clear the Absol's system from the charge.

Gaard watched Gastly carefully, waiting for any sign of movement from the large ball of gas. When the wild Pokemon moved forward to attack, he would try to rush in with his own attack first before Gastly could react. Once this was done, he readied Hidden Power, glowing with a yellow light while aiming his attack.

Even before Siless finished saying he would pass up on Baltoy, the little Psychic abruptly spun off into the grass. I saw the grass rustling as the Pokemon made its way back to the cave it had followed us from, and a few minutes later we were on our way again.

It was about five minutes later when we reached the tree line for the woods. There was a great deal of noise coming from within; birdsong, bugs buzzing, and Pokemon cries met us as we stepped into the woods. Not even a few feet in, though, a soft hum filled the air. I drew to a halt and looked around, then noticed a shimmer about five feet away from us and about eight feet off the ground. The shimmer gradually darkened and solidified into a purple Ghost known as a Mismagius. It was the Pokemon that was humming, though it was hard to tell if it was in warning or in greeting. The Ghost didn’t seem overly bothered by our presence, but then again most Mismagius appear calm even when they’re upset.

“Ghosts seem rather attracted to you, good sir,” I said with a smile.

A Mismagius stood in front of us this time. As Missy demonstrated, I wasn't opposed to having a Mismagius on the taem. If I even thought about taking in some random wild Mismagius, though, Missy would be ripping my head off (figuratively, but still. It wasn't worth the trouble it would cause). I didn't really need to pick up a second Mismagius anyways; Missy was more than effective. She was just a handful at times.

"Let's not bother this Mismagius. It seems it's in the middle of something." I had actually just noticed that it was humming; Mismagius knew a wide collection of blessings and curses it could apply to just about anything through various incantations, and this humming was likely a part of a good portion of those. Interrupting one for anything was almost a guarantee that you would be cursed by it unless you were lucky enough to be its trainer once you gained its favor.

I nodded at Siless’s comment to leave the Mismagius be and was getting ready to motion for the young man to follow me around it, but at that moment the Ghost abruptly ceased humming and fixated us with an intense stare. For a few moments it simply stared at us, but then it moved closer and began to circle us. It was quite eerie, especially because the Ghost was so quiet, but I didn’t sense anything overly threatening about the Pokemon’s actions. After a moment it was in front of us, not even a full foot away as it began to hum again, softer this time.

“We’d better be careful about what we do,” I said to Siless in a low voice. “I don’t think it’s planning anything bad, but it’s hard to tell what Mismagius are thinking sometimes.”

Mismagius circled us, keeping us from leaving, and then continued its humming incantation. I… honestly didn't want to stick around to find out what it was for. If Mismagius's incantation was a curse, I didn't want to be around when it got off (though I suppose I could ask Missy to help ward off the curse with a blessing of her own. Still, it felt wrong to ask for a blessing as opposed to being granted one). A distraction would be perfect for being able to get out of this unscathed; if we simply just left, Mismagius would still be able to lay a curse without us in the immediate area, and something to take its attention away would be perfect. On the other hand, if Mismagius was granting a blessing, a parting gift would be perfect for the occasion. While it felt… weird to justify my next action with both of these ideas simultaneously, there really wasn't much better to do. I reached into my pack and pulled out a Pokédoll, then proceeded to place the small, irresistible Clefairy plush on the ground between me and the Mismagius. I backed up slowly to put some space in between me and the doll; even if Mismagius was friendly, I didn't want to force myself into its space.

Siless pulled a PokeDoll into view and slowly set it down, then backed away a few paces to give Mismagius some space. The Ghost swayed gently as it moved towards the doll, wrapping a tendril of ghostly energy around it and lifting it into the air. The hum turned into a chant, but after a moment the Pokemon cut itself off. It then nodded once and turned, silently drifting away. A few moments later I noticed movement from where Mismagius had originally been. I focused on it and saw a small blue shape slowly walking towards us.

“A Wynaut,” I said to no one in particular. There was a jagged, pale blue mark on top of its head; a scar it seemed. The wound it would have taken to receive such a scar must have been quite a nasty blow…I think realized that the little Psychic wasn’t just walking slowly, but wasn’t very steady. “I think…that Wynaut must have taken a pretty bad injury to the head, and Mismagius was probably blessing it to heal it. That scar looks fresh and Wynaut’s stumbling a bit.” The Pokemon would be fine, no doubt, and I could already see its steps becoming more stable as it moved around. “What do you want to do?”

Mismagius seemed to have been helping out a Wynaut. I couldn't help but feel our distraction could have kept the healing incantation from being as powerful as it could have been. I didn't really want a Wynaut, but it was our last encounter, so I figured I might as well make sure it's alright before going back to the outpost.

"Sela, let's make sure the Wynaut is ready to go before we leave." Between Sela's Heal Pulse and our ability to watch as a lookout for Wynaut until it's back on its feet, we could probably have it ready before too long. While I didn't want to catch it, there really was no reason for us to not make sure it was alright before leaving.

Sela did as asked, but after a few moments of using her Psychic powers to check Wynaut’s relative health, she nodded once. I got a vague sense of her relaying that Wynaut was fine, just a little dazed from the injury it had taken. It seemed we hadn’t been too much of a distraction to Mismagius, as it apparently had done a very good job of healing the small Psychic Pokemon.

We watched as it toddled off, most likely heading back towards whatever cave was its home, and then I faced Siless. Flutter, in a random fit of excitement that often overtook her when she was in wooded areas, launched off my shoulder to fly above our heads, chittering somewhat crazily. I snorted at her antics and then chuckled a little.

“She’s so easily excited,” I said. “Anyways, hopefully you enjoyed your visit to the Park as a Trainer instead of a Ranger this time. With any luck I’ll be seeing more of you around so we can get to know each other a little better.”

Eric moved first and said, "All right next use a Light Screen so that Absol won't take as much damage from anything Gastly does, and then follow up with a Bug Bite." Eric was known for his pure offensive attacking and Joe was a little but surprised when he said this. However this was a team run and if both trainers work together, who knows what they can achieve.

Akinai turned to her Absol and quickly added, “Don't get too overconfident when that Light Screen goes up, Gaard,” Absol turned around and gave her a dismissive snort which was joined in by Jade. It seemed from a distance that Absol was a very proud and confident Pokemon.

Once Gaard managed to regain his composure, Akinai prepared her next command and said, “Let's go with Sucker Punch, and then go with Hidden Power.” Hidden Power was a very interesting move. Each Pokemon have certain individual values and those values decide which type Hidden Power will be. Of course there are some trainers out there who breed to get the ‘ultimate’ Pokemon with the right IV’s to counter its weaknesses.

Scizor moved first and quickly created a large pink shield in front of Absol and himself. The barrier reduced the power of special moves meaning that they were protected from a distance. It was an ideal team move, and it also protected Absol from special attacks. Absol attacked next and suddenly disappeared from where it was standing. Joe cast his eyes towards Gastly and suddenly noticed the Disaster Pokemon behind him. He raised his head and his sickle-shaped growth started to glow in a darker colour. Within seconds, Absol slammed his growth down on Gastly, surprising the ghost Pokemon. Absol quickly retreated back to his original position and looked around hoping people noticed his attack.

Gastly quickly retaliated and stormed forward towards Absol. Gastly quickly formed a ghostly arm from its body and raised it into the air. Joe watched as fire started to ignite around the fist, setting it alight. Gaslty stormed through the barrier and slammed the flaming fist down on Absol. Absol took the pain and shrugged Gastly off with his sickle-shaped growth on the side of his head. Gastly quickly returned to his position and started to feel good about his recent actions, imitating Absol.

Munna had stayed quiet for a short time however the small psychic Pokemon suddenly tucked his limps in tight and sped towards Scizor. A small purple coating started to cover the top of Munna’s head as he raced towards Scizor. Joe would have guessed that this move was Zen Headbutt, one of the few physical psychic moves. Munna burst through the barrier and slammed into Scizor, sending the steel Pokemon off his feet. Munna quickly teleported back to its original position and watched as Scizor quickly got back onto his feet.

Scizor shrugged off the attack and started to race towards Munna. The Light Metal Pokemon suddenly revealed his small white fangs and pointed them in the direction of Munna. As Scizor got closer to Munna, the fangs suddenly increased in size and were coated in a light green colour. Scizor planted his fangs into Munna and quickly removed them. Munna looked down at the bite marks and noticed small holes dotted around in a bite-like shape. Munna turned around and looked at Scizor, with a pissed off look. Munna suddenly glowed in a bright white colour and started to shake furiously. Then Munna unleashed his attack towards Gastly and passed over the power he had just generated. Joe recognized that move as Helping Hand, a move which boosts the power of a partner Pokemon in a double battle. Now Gastly had been powered up and quickly attacked.

Gaslty send released a huge wave of energy towards Scizor and Absol. The energy travelled in a dark red ring and passed through the screen. The attack smacked each Pokemon and caused some slight damage. Joe started to wonder what that move was. It managed to pass through the Light Screen, despite being a special attack. Then it suddenly came to him, it was Night Shade; a move which is dependant on the level of the Pokemon. He also remembered that all Pokemon in the National Park were at their maximum level and moves like Night Shade also dealt maximum damage.

Absol quickly repaid the favour to Gastly and started to glow in a bright yellow colour. This was Absol’s Hidden Power attack and from the way Absol was going about it, it seemed like it was Hidden Power electricity. Absol unleashed the attack towards Gastly and completely caught the ghost Pokemon off guard.

Joe looked at Gastly and noticed that his eyes started to slowly drift away from Absol, almost like he wasn’t fixed by anger than before. It seemed like the taunt had warn off.

Of the serious 50% chance that Absol could be a female...it was. This trainer had managed to analyze the curvature in the tail and the lean physique it had all in a short amount of time. With that, Ripper automatically had the advantage. Aside from being a Male, Scizor was a Steel/Bug type so unless Absol was packing heavy fire type moves, Kiryu doubted Absol would be much of a threat. The first command was Attract, a move that made any gender appealing to the opposite sex. Ripper was instantly studly to Absol, indicating the heart shape in her iris. Absol purred lustfully at the Scizor but had launched a powerful Night Slash at his chest and head before Ripper began to use Iron Defense. This vixen was playing hard to get. Ripper would give her a smirk before it's body glowed in a mettalic silver, increasing his Defense by two stages. Saki, who was perched on his shoulder, gave a distasteful snub of her nose.

The way things were going it was like Akinai, and myself were fighting two separate battles, and Munna and Gastly were fighting the same exact battle. I guess that was to be expected from two trainers against two wild Pokemon though. With Pokemon they could just give each other a stare, and know what to do. With two people they would generally need to discuss things in advanced, and well I hadn't discussed anything with Akinai prior to this run so. Still that wasn't going to stop me from doing what I do.

Akinai, and myself did our separate things once more, well except for Light Screen. Scizor had used Bug Bite on Munna, and Absol used its Hidden Power, and Sucker Punch on Gastly. Sucker Punch was a pretty smart idea, since Gastly was Taunted it would have no choice but to use a damaging attack, so Sucker Punch couldn't fail. Though no matter what Gastly was going to use though it would be more deadly now, since Munna had used Helping Hand to help boost its strength, before it attacked itself. Not to mention that Gastly also attacked both of our Pokemon, because of Night Shade. That was fine, and dandy, but Munna was my opponent, so it constantly

So that's how you want to play is it Munna? I thought to myself. It had looked at Scizor angrily, and then attacked, but hey it wasn't my fault that it showed up here for a battle. What was I suppose to do, not attack it? I was a man of action when it came to battles, so of course I'd use a move such as Bug Bite. Besides, it deserved it for using Safeguard before hand, and even more so now for using Helping Hand. Well I'll show it why you don't mess with Scizor.

"All right Scizor, pretty good so far. Now let's focus on showing off your other typing. Use an Iron Head!" I commanded. No sense in only using Bug-type moves, when Scizor also have various, powerful Steel-type moves it could also show off. Besides, it had already used its two best Bug-type moves, so I felt it was time for a change. Something to try and keep things fresh, and maybe unexpected.

Iron Head was essentially the Steel-type version of Headbutt. The user would make their head as hard as steel, or in the case of Steel-types they would focus an extra amount of strength into their head, and ram it into their opponent. The shockwave that this attack could produce could be so power that it actually had a chance of causing the opposing Pokemon to flinch upon contact. Normally this is the part of the battle where I'd also throw a ball, and hope that I had done enough damage, but in this case I glanced over at Akinai, and I knew that whatever she was planning, well she would most likely want to see it through before throwing a ball, and since we were here as a team it would make more sense to throw a ball at the same time. So I would wait until she was ready. Maybe it was for the best anyway, because who know if Munna would need to be damaged a bit more or not first.

It seemed our ploy had worked and Absol was infatuated with Ripper. She was rather feisty, though, moving in with a quick Night Slash before Ripper could perform his Iron Defense. Thanks to his tough steel exoskeleton, though, the attack didn’t really do much damage at all. It was little more than a momentary distraction, which Ripper quickly got over. He then proceeded to employ his Iron Defense, boosting his defenses and offering more protection against moves such as Night Slash in the future.

“Okay Ripper, it’s time to make use of that defense boost,” I called. “Absol seems to like playing rough, so let’s show off some of that strength of yours! Get in there with a Vacuum Wave and follow up with a Double Hit!” Ripper wasted no time responding; instead, he vanished in a blur of crimson. Vacuum Wave made no physical contact with the foe; instead, the user would rush by the foe, creating a powerful vacuum of air that would collapse behind them and damage the foe with resulting shockwaves. It was a Special attack, though, so it wouldn’t do very much damage. I wasn’t concerned with that; instead I was focused on getting Ripper close enough to land a solid blow while hopefully impressing Absol. With any luck she would be too distracted by Ripper’s quick and fluid attack to attempt a counter of her own.

Double Hit itself was a simple move. There was nothing special about it, no secondary effects or prior preparation to use. Basically the attack was exactly what it sounded like; the user would get in close and strike their opponent two times in rapid succession. Most Pokemon would strike different places, but Ripper and I had discovered (rather on accident) that striking the same place both times tended to be more effective.

As Ripper started his Vacuum Wave, Ironbeak descended from the sky and perched on a large log that was a fair distance from the battle taking place. I saw him open his deadly beak, most likely to offer encouragement, but must have thought better of it. He closed his beak and hunkered down, apparently deciding to wait until there was less of a chance of distracting Ripper from what he was doing. After all, with the Scizor moving so fast he was practically invisible, a distraction could send him for a nasty tumble.

Scizor, like before, acted first. A transparent rose-pink barrier began to shimmer in view around the Bug-type, then stretched out to cover Gaard as well in the field. This field would lessen the effect of any Special moves heading their way, which would hopefully discourage any moves of that type being used.

Gaard, seeing Gastly beginning to float forward, used his impressive speed to strike next. He vanished out of sight on the field, earning both a confused expression and causing the gaseous creature to look about wildly for his target. Seconds later, the Absol reappeared directly behind the wild Pokemon, swatting the Ghost-type with a paw infused with Dark-infused energy before vanishing once more. By the time Gastly had figured out just what had happened to him, Gaard was already standing back in his original position, more than a little pleased with his little maneuver.

Now seeing red, Gastly stormed over to the Absol, forming some of his incorporeal form into a very solid-looking fist. The newly-formed limb suddenly ignited, then slammed down through the barrier and on Gaard in retaliation, forcing the Dark-type to try fending him off with his single horn. After a short struggle, Gastly broke free and floated back over to his own partner, glad that he managed to even the odds slightly.

Munna had stayed silent the entire time, watching the rest of the fight carefully before moving in. As soon as Gastly had finished his move, the tapir-like creature huddled into a ball and sped towards Scizor, ramming the Steel-type and bypassing the barrier as well. Scizor was knocked off his feet, and before he could land a counterstrike Munna simply teleported away back beside Gastly.

Scizor managed to shrug off Munna's attack fairly well, and rushed straight towards the pink Pokemon, opening his mouth wide to chomp down on the floating creature in front of him. Then, just as quickly as he bit down, Scizor released his hold and attempted to retreat.

Munna's response was both immediate and vengeful, glaring at the Bug-type as she readied her move. Glowing with bright white energy, she readied her power in visible form before surprisingly transferring it over to Gastly. The Ghost-type seemed just as shocked as everyone else for the power boost, but gave a wide grin in response.

Using his newfound power right away, a dark violet ring began to emanate around Gastly, pulsing a moment before shooting straight at the Absol. Oddly enough, despite appearing to be a Special Attack, the wave shot straight through the barrier and struck both Gaard and Scizor as well. Munna's Helping Hand must have given the wild Pokemon an impressive attack boost indeed.

Gaard, unfortunately for Gastly wasn't completely done with his own moves yet. Once the Night Shade had worn off, the Dark-type shot a pulse forward as well, this one of a yellow hue and crackled with energy. It landed on Gastly, both shocking the Pokemon and catching it completely off-guard.

Akinai assessed the situation, sort of at a loss on what to do next. While it was clear that neither her or Eric were going to lose this battle, the fact was that both Gastly and Munna were both using their heads for this battle. Sure, they could both easily take down the creatures if Gaard and Scizor picked up the pace, but she had no desire to accidentally faint the Gastly. A quick look over at Eric told her that it was likely that the other Trainer felt the same about Munna.

There was another problem as well: whether it was from Gaard's shocking attack or that the move had finally worn off, Gastly looked far more calm than before, no longer glaring at the Absol as if he wished to rip the creature limb from limb. Now it had an almost eerie grin on his face as he looked over at them.

“Well, there went Taunt,” Akinai said out loud, pointing out to Eric as well to warn him of the situation. Perfect, not only do we have to hold back, but will have to be fast about it as well, she thought silently to herself. Gastly had a nasty amount of hindering attacks like Confuse Ray and Hypnosis and, worst of all, Curse. If Gastly used Curse while weakened... well, they would be minus one Pokemon to fight and a wasted battle. Still, she doubted the Pokemon would fall for another Taunt, so they would have to figure out something different.

Yet another annoying issue was the Munna's Safeguard, the blue field shimmering almost mockingly in front of them. While the barrier was up, Gaard couldn't even use Taunt again even if commanded to. Paralyzing was out of the question as well, along with poison, burning, freezing or even confusing either of the two wild Pokemon. That meant that they were pretty much limited to attacks or boosting attacks, which made it all the harder to pull any punches. While there were ways of taking down the field other than just simply waiting the move out, Akinai possessed none of the moves needed to do so. With Eric being an offensive battler, it was likely he would just attempt to break through the Safeguard using brute force instead.

Either way, it was time to act; if she spent too long thinking about it, Gaard would be a sitting duck for any incoming attacks. “Show them your speed once more, Gaard! Let's go with Double Team, then go with Night Slash on the same target when ready,” she commanded the Absol. Once Gaard nodded in recognition, she added, “remember to not go all-out. We want to bring this one home, not faint it.”

Gaard rolled his eyes, but nodded again before splitting off into multiple images before the two Pokemon. If the move was successful, the shadows would move in tandem with the Absol as she moved about to confuse Gastly and possibly Munna if she looked too carefully. Once he was close enough, all the images would try to move in and hide the real Gaard, who would dive in for a slicing attack on the Ghost-type.

With a smirk, the Absol was smiling and winking at Ripper. Ripper, on the other hand, had a massive sweat drop going down the side of his head. His gave was similar to "Dear Arceus why me?" or any other similar manner. “Okay Ripper, it’s time to make use of that defense boost,” I called. “Absol seems to like playing rough, so let’s show off some of that strength of yours! Get in there with a Vacuum Wave and follow up with a Double Hit!” With that, Ripper was off in an invisible assault, his claw turning a bright purple as it struck the Absol once in the side of the head and once upwards into the stomach. The Absol was then knocked into the air but the hearts in her eyes showed she was infatuated. Ripper then crash its claws together as a tornado appeared around it and slashed at the Absol in more than one place. Ripper's steely demeanor was much to be desired. Absol then fell toward the ground but appeared in front of the Scizor and launched a fist into Rippers cheek, a signature Sucker Punch. But so far Ripper didn't seem phased.

Luck was on our side, it seemed. Absol was indeed the feisty type, being completely infatuated by Ripper’s first blow. She recovered just enough to counter after his second one, though, curling one of her paws into a fist and smashing it into Ripper’s face in a Sucker Punch move. The blow was strong enough to knock Ripper back a few feet, but it didn’t do very much damage at all. Ripper buzzed his wings for a moment, clearly not pleased with the situation but sucking it up like the trooper he was. I smiled a little at his determination; there were times when something was just too off the wall for him to agree to doing, but in cases like this when he decided to roll with the punches, he really did do his best.

Absol was looking a bit run-down at this point, and I figured the Vacuum Wave/Double Hit combo had struck a bit harder than I’d first thought they would. Still, it would actually work in our favor. I smiled a little as I pondered our next move and quickly decided on something. It would be similar to what we just did, to the point where Absol might get complacent and not realize the attacks were different until it was too late. Being sneaky wasn’t Ripper’s thing, though, so I decided not to mention we’d be trying to fool Absol with our next set of attacks.

“Okay Ripper, Absol seemed impressed with that last combo of ours, so let’s give her a show! Move in with a Quick Attack, then when you’re close enough give her a Fury Cutter!” Ripper nodded once to show he understood before vanishing once again, moving so quickly he wasn’t visible even as a red blur. Even though I’d ordered a Quick Attack, Ripper had been with me long enough to know I didn’t want him to actually strike with that move. Instead, he would use the speed to dart over to Absol and use a Fury Cutter; it would be stronger than normal thanks to the momentum from the Quick Attack, but not strong enough to risk knocking out the Absol like two separate attacks might. After all, Ripper’s Technician Ability made him extremely efficient in using weaker attacks, boosting their power and making them more effective than they might otherwise be.

As Ripper vanished, I found my mind wandering back to when I’d first encountered Kilia, the Absol I already owned. I’d been visiting the Daycare to have the tutors there teach one of my Pokemon a new attack, but someone had been dropping off a very pregnant Absol just as I’d arrived. I came in on the conversation the Absol’s owner, a young woman of maybe eighteen, was having the elderly couple who operated the Daycare.

“She’s worthless like this. She can’t battle and she can’t coordinate. She can’t even be in a Musical! I don’t care what you have to do, but she can’t stay like this,” the woman had been saying, and I’d been horrified how she spoke about her Pokemon. The Absol herself seemed extremely depressed, lying on the admission counter with the most sorrowful expression I’ve ever seen on a Pokemon. “You people need to fix this, it’s your fault she’s like this! You should have all the males separate from the females or something to keep this from happening!”

“Excuse me,” I’d cut in, fixing the woman with a hard glare when she’d turned to face me. “Tell me something, lady. Are you illiterate or just completely oblivious to large signs posted both outside and inside that clearly state males and females are freely allowed to interact?” She’d sputtered angrily at me for a few moments before I’d dismissed whatever pitiful excuse she was concocting with a wave. “And what do you mean they need to “fix” it? Your Absol is probably going to give birth in a few days. I really hope you don’t mean “abort the pups” when you say “fix”, because that’s pretty much murder. And besides, she isn’t broken, she’s perfect, so there’s nothing to “fix”.” I’d then turned from her as she glared at me, facing the Absol on the counter and offering my hand for her to sniff. The Pokemon had given me a look of hope and offered a feeble purr, and I’d rubbed her head as I faced her owner.

“You’re the worst kind of person,” I’d said, suddenly enraged at how the woman had been talking about her Pokemon, as if she were just some object. “This Pokemon is about to become a mother, what she needs is a caring, understanding owner, not someone who CLEARLY thinks Pokemon are nothing more than tools to be used for their own gain and entertainment. If all you care about is how good your Pokemon make you look, if you don’t care about the Pokemon themselves, then I feel really really sorry for your partners. They got shortchanged when you got your hands on them.” I then looked over at the old couple, who looked shocked but at the same time pleased with the woman’s chewing-out. “Is there a way I can make a formal complaint for abuse to take Pokemon from someone?”

“Whatever!” the woman had suddenly snapped, but she now seemed very anxious and fidgety. I knew her type, the ones who treated Pokemon like garbage and only used them to get famous or rich. “Do whatever you want, I don’t give a damn!” She’d then hastily left the Daycare, leaving her Absol behind. Normally, when Pokemon are abandoned, they become withdrawn and unresponsive. But the Absol had become…so very happy. She’d perked up the moment she was no longer in that horrid woman’s possession.

Over the next few days I’d come to visit the Absol, who was giving birth to her first litter. One the day she whelped, she had four pups. But they hadn’t developed right because of how strained the Absol had been during her pregnancy, and all but one were stillborn. The little pup was a fighter, though, and somehow she managed to overcome several fatal illnesses. She had several birth defects, but she beat all the odds and survived. When she was old enough, she was adopted by a collector who took in Pokemon like the deformed pup, giving them a safe and happy home where they weren’t made to battle or coordinate or do anything they didn’t want to.

By this point, I’d developed a fondness for the mother Absol. As I’d gotten to know her over the months, I’d come to discover various quirks in her personality. She was a very eccentric Pokemon, which became obvious after she’d given birth and was capable freely moving around. Sometimes she could sit for hours without moving a muscle, and other times she’d be so energetic she’d bounce around all day before exhausting herself. I’d been told by several people who’d seen her antics that if she were human, she’d be labeled as having ADD. Despite her somewhat crazy demeanor, I’d quickly accepted the offer the Daycare couple had made to adopt the Absol and become her Trainer. On the day I’d signed the papers I’d given her the name Kilia, which was the name of an Absol my father had owned back when I was young.

The memories only took a few seconds to relive; when I finally focused on the present, Ripper was still using his Quick Attack. Kilia hadn’t been around another Absol in a while; she enjoyed the company of her own kind and would most likely be quite happy to have an Absol around, even if just for a short while.

"All right Scizor, pretty good so far. Now let's focus on showing off your other typing. Use an Iron Head!" Eric commanded to his Scizor. Joe realised that Scizor wasn’t just a Bug type but also a Steel type, giving him a range of steel attacks as well. Iron Head was a powerful steel move and with Scizor’s high attack it could potentially deal a lot of damage to Munna.

Joe turned his head towards Akinai and noticed that she was occupied by her thoughts. It was a tough choice to make. Obviously the battle was in favour of Absol and Scizor; however Munna and Gastly showed resilience and also showed signs that they could surprise both Eric and Akinai. She broke out from her thoughts and said, “Show them your speed once more, Gaard! Let's go with Double Team, and then go with Night Slash on the same target when ready.” Absol nodded in agreement. Absol was about to move when Akinai added, “Remember to not go all-out. We want to bring this one home, not faint it.”

Absol nodded, understanding Akinai’s worry. Then Absol started to jump around on the spot. As he leaped around, Joe noticed several images of Absol suddenly appear, each one darting to the side of Absol. Absol immediately stopped and looked around, noticing two Absols on each side. Joe remembered that the move Double Team made exact replicates of the Pokemon, however where very easy to get rid off.

Munna looked ahead and stared at his opponent again. In all due respects, it was going to be a hard battle for Munna to win or even compete against. His main arsenal of moves were mostly psychic types and unfortunately for Munna, they were not very effective against Scizor. Munna started to shine in a bright white light. Joe started to wonder if he was using Helping Hand again, maybe to give Gastly some more power. However Munna didn’t pass over the energy to Gastly and simply absorbed the energy. Munna’s eyes fixed forward to Scizor and cried out loud as he started to break apart the floor. The floor started to shake and soon small pieces of rocks started to float out from the ground. The rocks hovered in front of Munna, ready to be thrown towards Scizor. Scizor quickly acted and started to run towards Munna. There was no way he was going to be hit again and leaped into the air. Munna, noticing Scizor’s actions, quickly fire the rocks towards the Light Steel Pokemon. In the air, Scizor locked his head in the direction of Munna and started to speed down towards Munna, keeping all his limps locked into the side of his body. From a distance he looked like a bullet, smashing into the rocks. The rocks were no match for Scizor as he quickly smashed through them. Scizor followed up the attack and slammed into Munna, sending the small Psychic Pokemon crashing into the ground. Scizor quickly returned in front of Eric and started to rub his head. It looked like Scizor was dealt some damage as he collided against the rocks, but it was very limited.

Gaslty watched as his partner was flattened by Scizor and entered a spell of rage. He quickly started to glow in a green colour. Joe took a couple of steps back, scared that Gastly’s rage might overcome his accuracy and that he would start miss-firing his attacks. Gastly relaxed his bright green body and suddenly fired out three small orbs. The three small orbs travelled their way towards Absol. They travelled through the pink screen, however unlike the other attacks; they whittled down into smaller orbs.

’Gastly must not realize that Light Screen is still up,’

The orbs crashed into three of the Absol clones, destroying each one. Gastly started to growl, annoyed that he didn’t hit the real Absol. Absol quickly attacked, taking advantage of Gastly’s state of mind. The Disaster Pokemon leaped through the barrier and his large growth spurt on the side of his head started to glow. As Absol ran towards Gastly, the growth started to change colour into a dark black colour. Absol ran past Gastly, swiping his growth against his gas-like body. Gastly cried out with pain and watched as Absol turned around and made its way back to it’s original position.

After Gastly’s pain subsided, the Gas Pokemon quickly turned his attention to Absol. He suddenly unleashed a huge wave of energy towards Absol. It seemed that Gaslty used the same move again, opting for Night Shade. However it was different than last time. The move was heading towards Absol, and Absol only. It seemed that when Munna used Helping Hand, it gave Gastly the power to attack two Pokemon at once. The wave passed through the barrier at ease and made its way towards the Absol’s. The original Absol quickly leaped up into the air, anticipating the move again. However the Absol’s didn’t know what was happening and suddenly disappeared as the attack passed by.

Joe looked out across the battle field. He noticed Munna still down and if he was closer to Eric, he would say that one move should probably capture Munna. As for Gastly, it showed signs of weakness however this Pokemon has shown how unexpected it can be. Then out of nowhere, both of the screens suddenly faded into thin air. It seemed that Safeguard and Light Screen were now gone.
