    "Alright Swampert, you're going to have to hold out a bit longer! Use Mud Shot!" Nitro called out after congratulating his Pokemon on its attack.

    Mud Shot was a Ground-typed move, so not only was it supereffective against Ponyta, it was also more powerful because the Ground-typed Swampert was using it. Furthermore, it was one of the few Special-based Ground-typed attacks, so Swampert's Burn wouldn't weaken its power. Finally, it often slowed targets down, so the Ponyta's Agility increase would be at least partially negated. I began to revise my opinions of Nitro - he was indeed a shrewd battler.

    Swampert looked around at the ground near her, looking for some dirt or mud. Apparently she decided that moistening the ground to throw was too much trouble, so she simply spat a fountain of mud towards the Ponyta, which had begun to run towards her. The Mud Shot mostly splattered around the Fire-type's legs, but it clung to them and slowed her down. Nevertheless, the Fire Horse Pokemon kept on galloping towards Swampert, even with large clods of mud around its ankles.

    The Ponyta crashed into the Swampert, shoulder-tackling it. The big aquatic beast growled, but didn't seem too disturbed by the attack. Still, the Ponyta managed to run away a little bit, backing off before the Swampert could retaliate.

    Swampert's Mud Shot landed on Ponyta, forcing him to steady his feet to avoid falling over. I smiled. Swampert's prowess with Special moves weren't particularly eye-opening, but she could use them to her advantage all the same. With STAB thrown in, I figured the move should have done some nice damage.

    "Ponyta!" he grunted unhappily. Angrily, he ran towards Swampert. He was still fast, but I noticed he seemed to have lost some of the speed he had acquired just now. That was logical - Mud Shot was a move that always dropped the target's Speed.

    Ponyta ran towards Swampert. He tackled my Pokemon in the chest, dropping my Pokemon to a knee. I noticed that Ponyta backed away immediately, cringing a little. He must have used Take Down. It was a powerful Physical move, but it also resulted in some recoil damage on the user.

    I looked at Swampert. As always, the Burn was taking its toll on my Pokemon. Not only that, but Swampert was also taking legitimate hits from Ponyta. As strong as Swampert was, it would be really unfortunate if Swampert did end up fainting.

    "Swampert, use Curse!" I commanded. "After that, immediately transition into Refresh!"

    Swampert nodded, and a pale green aura enveloped it. She absorbed the aura, and I nodded approvingly. Curse was a move that increased the user's Attack and Defense stats, while lowering its Speed stat. That was perfectly fine with me in this case. The boost in the Attack stat helped to offset the Burn's negative effect on Swampert's colossal Attack stat, and while it didn't completely cross out the drop, it was certainly helpful. The Speed drop wouldn't make much of a difference here, as Ponyta already had given itself a clear advantage. The Defense boost was very helpful and what I wanted most of the move, however. Most of Ponyta's attacks were Physical, and the Defense boost definitely helped to reduce the damage those moves would result in. Coupled with the fact that essentially all of Ponyta's Special attacks were Fire-type, I figured Ponyta should have a slightly harder time doing damage to Swampert.

    Swampert moved on to Refresh. A friendlier green aura surrounded it this time. I watched the burn mark on her cheek slowly fade away. Refresh was a move that removed any status conditions on the user. Coupled with Curse, this should do wonders for Swampert's longevity in the battle.

    "Swampert, use Curse!" Nitro called out. "After that, immediately transition into Refresh!"

    Swampert nodded and began to mutter something under her breath. A sickly aqua-green light began to glow around her, moving slowly closer to her skin. My Swampert Smash also knew the Curse technique, but he didn't like using it. He was by nature a very happy and jolly Pokemon, and muttering hate-filled swear-words wasn't his idea of a fun battle. Still, neither he nor I could doubt the effects of the technique - while the concentration slowed the user down a bit, it also reinforced their physical abilities. The result was that the Mud Fish Pokemon hit slightly harder than a speeding truck.

    When the glow disappeared and Swampert had finished muttering, a different glow surrounded her. This one was also green, but it was the deep green of a healthy foliage. It flowed across her body gracefully, targeting and sticking to areas that had been burned by the Ponyta's Inferno, most notably her foreleg.

    As the Refresh healed the Water-type, the Ponyta brayed loudly and began to gallop towards Swampert again. This time, however, it jumped high into the air. My mouth dropped open as the Fire Horse Pokemon appeared to hang in midair. Its fiery mane streamed upwards as its descent began, and it brought its front two hooves striking down hard onto Swampert's neck. Swampert grunted in pain as the horse ran down her back and past Nitro and me, taking refuge behind a rock.

    The Fire-type's mane began to glow bright white and expand, and the fire slowly started to wrap around her body. I scratched my head, unsure what it was doing, until I remembered a battle that Ivy had once told me about where a Trainer of hers had battled a Growlithe.

    "That Ponyta is using Morning Sun," I said to Nitro warningly.

    As Refresh completed, Ponyta began running towards my Swampert. I wasn't sure what it was planning to do, but I certainly wasn't expecting it to make an explosive jump into the air. However, I immediately recognized the move as Bounce.

    "Swampert-" I began, but it was too late. Ponyta landed on my Swampert, crushing his hooves on to his back. For what it was worth, I remembered that Ponyta's attack should have been affected by the Defense drop from Swampert's Curse. That meant it should have done less damage than it normally would have, though judging from the looks of things, the move had still done quite a bit of damage, especially with the Burn factored in.

    Ponyta continued running past Swampert. I wondered if the Pokemon was going to run, but he instead ran behind a rock. For a second, I thought he was trying to hide, as ridiculous as that was. However, I noticed that the mane on his back was getting unnaturally bright and seemingly expanding.

    "That Ponyta is using Morning Sun," James remarked.

    "Ah," I said, gathering my thoughts. Morning Sun was a move that regenerated Ponyta's health. If he regenerated too much of his health, it would be really annoying - Ponyta was already recovering some of his health with each second that passed. In this open field, Ponyta could take in a lot of sunlight, meaning it could recover a lot of health. I would definitely have to do something about it. I quickly studied the situation, and came up with an adequate idea.

    "Swampert, use Rock Smash!" I commanded. The idea here was for Swampert to smash the rock Ponyta was hiding behind. The rock would collapse on Ponyta in fragments, which would serve two purposes. First, it would deal damage - that was a given. Second, it would put an abrupt halt to Ponyta's self-recovery. The rock, at such a close proximity to Ponyta, should completely cover it up when smashed into pieces. That meant the sun's rays would be unable to reach Ponyta, preventing Ponyta from being healed by them.

    Rock Smash was generally a weak move and I suspected I had already given Ponyta enough time to recover some health, but I hoped that I could still end up doing enough damage to at least offset the Morning Sun - it would make things much more convenient, especially with Swampert's health so low right now. As a matter of fact, I suspected I would have to use Dragonite in this battle.

    Swampert walked towards the rock Ponyta was hiding behind. Her fist was ready to smash the stone. I nodded at Swampert, giving her the go-ahead.

    Nitro hummed in response to my warning. He cast his gaze around the battlefield - from our side-on vantage point we could see the Ponyta as it hid from Swampert behind the rock. Nitro's eyes roamed around the field as he tried to think of what to do. The Ponyta's glow got brighter as the silence stretched on, but finally Nitro spoke up.

    "Swampert, use Rock Smash!" he ordered.

    Swampert moved forwards towards the rock that was obscuring Ponyta from her vision. Just by watching the Water-type move I could tell that she was tired - her movements were languid and sluggish, not crisp and quick like they usually were. The Swampert raised herself up onto her rear legs and balled her right hand into a fist. She punched the rock solidly and it exploded, showering chips in all directions. Most of them flew towards the Ponyta, though, and it neighed in surprise as the barrage of rock chips struck its flank. It quickly galloped away from the Swampert, putting distance between them before staring at the Mud Fish Pokemon with reproach.

    "Well, at least you put a stop that," I muttered partially to myself, "but Swampert is looking awfully tired."

    Swampert smashed her fist into the rock, crushing it into fragments. The rock crumbled on to Ponyta, and the Pokemon neighed nervously. He immediately dashed away from the rock, but I saw that many of the rocks still hit his side - they simply did not bury him as I had ideally planned. No problem, however - Ponyta's mane was no longer glowing, and that meant Morning Sun was no longer regenerating Ponyta's health. That had been my original goal, and as long as I had accomplished that, how much damage I did to Ponyta wasn't really important.

    "Great job, Swampert!" I called.

    Swampert slowly returned to my side. She was bent over, and breathing heavily. I could tell she was worn out, and getting dangerously close to her limit.

    "Keep pushing, Swampert," I said to her, patting her back encouragingly. I knew she was a tough Pokemon - together, we had been through all sorts of trials. Memories flashed past my eyes, reminding me of my Pokemon's resiliency. Battles against famous Trainers, such as those of the Elite Four... Swampert had never failed me. My Pokemon would keep fighting until her body could no longer keep up - her toughness had been enough to earn her a Tough Ribbon in a Contest.

    Swampert grunted, knowing as well as I did that we were close to finished, finished for good. Our run was finally almost over - I had plans to depart the moment I caught this Ponyta. It would be my third and final capture, and I had no reason to stay any longer once I had obtained it.

    "Alright, Swampert, we're in the home stretch now!" I hollered, trying to get my Pokemon pumped up. "Trap Ponyta in a Whirlpool!"

    Swampert nodded once. She formed a tornado of water in her mouth, and launched it at Ponyta. Ideally, the Fire-type Pokemon would be trapped within the attack. That would allow me to use Yawn - an ideal move to set up captures with. It was a slow moving status move, but it inflicted the best status to inflict on a Pokemon you wanted to capture: sleep.

    Swampert slowly backed up as well, returning to Nitro's side. There was now a large distance in-between the two Pokemon, and the way they were staring at each other was invoking a real cowboy standoff vibe.

    "Keep pushing, Swampert," Nitro said, patting her back encouragingly. The Mud Fish Pokemon grunted, but she held herself a little higher. It just goes to show that a little encouragement goes a long way.

    "Alright, Swampert, we're in the home stretch now! Trap Ponyta in a Whirlpool!"

    The Swampert raised her head towards the sky, and water began flowing clockwise around her mouth and head. The Whirlpool grew and grew until a huge vortex as large as the Pokemon itself was hovering in midair. Swampert pulled her head down and the mini-cyclone flew towards the Ponyta like a frisbee. Instead of striking the horse sharply, the water moved around the horse before trapping it inside. The water swirled around the horse, completely blocking it from our sight.

    The Ponyta brayed loudly, clearly unhappy and in pain because of the water inferno raging around it. It brayed again, but this time something actually happened. Barely visible heat waves emanated out from the top of the Whirlpool, moving up into the sky. As they did so, the temperature steadily rose, until I was visibly shaking and panting with my mouth open. I didn't deal with heat well at the best of times, so being near a Heat Wave attack by a Fire Pokemon was as close to hell as I could get. Still, the attack probably bothered Swampert more than me - she was panting heavily too, and her back legs had completely collapsed. She wasn't going to be able to battle for much longer.

    OOC: Out of curiosity, are you allowing Swampert to take so much damage because this will be my last battle, or because my post quality is low? I figured it was the former, but if it's the latter, I want to know. Only reason I ask is because it doesn't seem natural to me for Swampert to take so much damage over the course of a single battle (though it would be a lot more logical if either of the two reasons were true).

    Swampert's Whirlpool rushed towards Ponyta. The cyclone of water slammed into the Fire-type Pokemon, and he brayed in clear discomfort as the vortex trapped him.

    "Great job, Swampert!" I cheered, eyeing my Pokemon cautiously. From the looks of things, she was going to need all the encouragement I could give her, as she was looking really worn out. Still, we only needed to hold out just a little bit longer.

    Ponyta brayed again. At first, I paid him no heed, thinking the Pokemon was just screaming in pain again. However, when I noticed that the air was getting hotter at an alarming pace, I turned to look at Ponyta. I could see that heat waves were emanating from the flames on his body, skewing my vision ever so slightly. This was Heat Wave. I paled - a powerful move like Heat Wave was going to eat up a lot of Swampert's remaining health, even despite her natural resistances and bulk.

    "Swampert!" my Pokemon cried, dropping to a knee. She was really worn out, and clearly in pain. I gave consideration to swapping her out for Dragonite, but I decided to hold back. Swampert had enough self-confidence to pick herself up after fainting. I needed her to get at least one more move off - it was crucial.

    "Swampert, hold on for just a little bit longer!" I urged. "Use Yawn!"

    Swampert opened her mouth and, struggling a bit, yawned out a pink bubble of energy from her mouth. The bubble of energy slowly floated towards Ponyta, who was still trapped within the Whirlpool. This was what I had been building up to with Whirlpool. I had needed Whirlpool to confine Ponyta so that he would be unable to avoid Yawn, a slow-moving attack.

    "Swampert, use Protect for now," I said as well. I didn't want my Pokemon to risk taking any more damage, whether it was from any residual Heat Wave or a Ponyta counterattack. Should Ponyta somehow escape Yawn, it would be handy to keep Swampert around for a second try if possible.

    A green energy of blossomed into being around Swampert. This was Protect - a move that stopped all attacks, bar the elusive Feint, from harming the user. It was a great source of temporary relief for Swampert - she was clearly using this time to rejuvenate herself.

    OOC: @Nitro it's because your post quality dropped for the first part of this battle. Last post in particular you only did a little more because Whirlpool is 35BP where Heat Wave is 100BP, so...

    ~~~~~
    "Swampert, hold out for just a bit longer!" Nitro called out. "Use Yawn!"
    Swampert opened her mouth wide, and began making a loud yawning sound. Little pink bubbles floated around her mouth, and then she fired a big one towards the raging Whirlpool. It floated gently and carelessly almost at odds with the seriousness of this battle. Finally, it was sucked into the vortex, and a couple seconds later I heard a thunderous pop. A quiet braying emanated from within the Whirlpool.
    "Swampert, use Protect for now," Nitro commanded.
    A green energy field began to surround the Water-type, and she curled up slightly. Protect was a great move, especially here in the Park - it usually gave a Trainer some free space and time to work with. However, this time it was un-necessary. The horse was thrown unceremoniously out of the top of the waterspout, which then collapsed into a small pool of water. The horse itself landed on its side. It looked over at Swampert, neighed uncertainly, and then collapsed onto the ground, fast asleep.
    "Well, this is probably your best chance to capture it," I said to Nitro.
    My Swampert's Yawn floated over to Ponyta. The Pokemon neighed anxiously, but couldn't do anything - he was still trapped in the Whirlpool. Swampert's Yawn slammed into him, and Ponyta fell asleep.
    "Swampert..." Swampert groaned weakly beside me. Her Protect fell, as did the Whirlpool. Thankfully, it was no longer necessary with Yawn in play. I patted the Pokemon's back.
    "You've done very well, Swampert," I said affectionately.
    "Well, this is probably your best chance to capture it," James muttered to me. I nodded - with Ponyta weakened and asleep, there was no need to delay any further. I unhooked a Park Ball from my belt. When I caught this Ponyta, I would leave. I couldn't wait to leave - I was more than ready to begin training with my new Pokemon, as well as try my hand at a different area of the Park. It was time to wrap things up.
    "You're mine, Ponyta!" I called, throwing the Park Ball at the sleeping Fire-type.
    "You've done very well Swampert," Nitro said to his Pokemon, a gentle smile on his face. It was the strongest emotion I'd seen on his face this entire run. Swampert wasn't feeling as happy, though - she grunted noncommittally and collapsed onto her stomach. I couldn't say I blamed her at all - she'd done a lot of battling today. Nitro pulled a Park Ball out of his pack.
    "You're mine, Ponyta!" he yelled as he threw the camoflage-painted ball towards the Fire Horse Pokemon. It tapped the sleeping Pokemon on its flanks, and the Pokemon was absorbed in a flash of red light. The ball shook three times, like usual.
    Suddenly, it exploded. I heard a ringing tone and saw the ball bounce a few metres away. The Ponyta had managed to resist the ball's capture mechanism, even while asleep! That was very hard to do, according to Broadblade. This Ponyta was very impressive.
    The horse gently raised its head off of the ground and made a spraying noise. I knew it was still asleep - there was no way a Yawn would wear off that quickly - so the only other possibility was that the Ponyta was now using a Snore attack. The Fire-type got even more impressive - even while it was unconsciou, it was unwilling to lose the fight. Still, I doubted that the Snore would do much damage to Swampert; she was only closing her eyes in mild annoyance.
    The Park Ball shook. I counted the wiggles with baited breath, knowing the fourth would not only mark Ponyta's capture, but the long-awaited end of this Park run. One, two, three... Nope. The Park Ball opened up, and Ponyta fell out of it still sleeping. I couldn't tell if I should be impressed or annoyed that Ponyta managed to fight his way out of the Park Ball in his slumber, but either way, there was only thing I was going to do.
    I picked out another Park Ball from my bag, ready to try for another capture. However, just as I was about to throw it, Ponyta snored loudly. This was no ordinary snore - I recognized this as the special Snore move. I looked at Swampert. As weak as Snore was, Swampert was already on the brink. It would hardly be surprising if Snore knocked out Swampert.
    "Swamp," my Pokemon muttered, shaking where she stood. However, she held her ground. I supposed Snore was simply too weak, and tossed the Park Ball.
    Nitro didn't seemed as impressed by the Ponyta as I did. In fact, his expression was one of annoyance, if anything. He simply pulled out a second Park Ball and tossed it towards the Fire Horse Pokemon as his Swampert panted tiredly on the ground. Perhaps the Snore attack had done more damage than I thought.
    "You should probably return Swampert to her Ball," I advised my Trainer.
    He did so while the Park Ball struck the Ponyta and once again it disappeared in a white flash. It shook on the ground, but this time the Wild Pokemon didn't break free. The device made the dinging sound that indicated a successful capture. I walked over and picked it up off the ground before dusting it off and sticking it in my pocket.
    "Congratulations on the capture," I said, shielding my eyes from the sun. "Wanna head on back now?"
    Nitro nodded, and I consulted my GPS, finding the shortest path back to the exit. It was getting late and I was sure we weren't going to run across any more Pokemon (it was only like a fifteen minute walk over open plains, after all) so I handed him the PokeBalls containing the three Pokemon he had captured. Even though I'd only come in on the tail end of this Expedition, it sure had been enjoyable.
