"Hmm. That worked out well Zappy. Now we just gotta hit it harder. But first, we gotta get these other wild pokes away from here, so we can attack a little harder without endangering the whole Lake. Use Roar to scare away the other pokes!" Master called.

Zappy threw back her head and made a horrible howling sound. The Roar smacked of violence and predatory intent, and it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. I even took an unconscious step backwards in case I needed to run. I heard the sound of flapping and some far away splashes, so I guessed that most of the other Pokemon around here were now vacating the area. Master had to be careful, though - some of the stronger Pokemon might come to watch the fight now.

The Kingler hadn't been intimidated by the Roar. It had started walking up the river floor, moving as fast as it could to try and get out of the river.

"Alright Zappy, that was good. Now, let's try a Discharge! Straight into the water! Show that Kingler how we fight! But hold back on the attack a smidge. We don't want to hurt anything that might have stayed near even after your Roar," Master said.

Zappy launched a few blue waves of electricity straight at the Kingler. The waves moved into the water and surrounded the Kingler, but the Pokemon's strength and force of will kept it moving forward. It emerged from the lake, shedding water and sparks. Now that it was on land, it could move faster. It scuttled alarmingly fast towards Zappy, its larger claw glowing steel-gray.

"alright Zappy, its coming for you now, and I think its kinda angry. Its starting to move fast now, so we gotta be faster. Use Agility to get away from its claws." Zappy listened and quickly tried to run away from the Kingler's glowing claws. I knew that those things could pack a wallop, and would probably cause some trouble for Zappy. Fortunately, I knew that agility would get Zappy out of its range.

"Alright Zappy, that should work well, but let's go for better. As you're moving away from its claws, we'll use its own attack against it. As your running, try to hit some of the mud, and throw it at the Kingler's eyes, making it harder for it to hit you!" I commanded, and Zappy understood. It moved at an incredible speed, racing by faster than anything else I had understood. I watched as the blur that was Zappy ran over several of the bigger piles of mud, spraying the mud at the Kingler in a sand attack style, hoping to blind it.

When Zappy stopped, it was well out of range of Kingler's claws. I wanted to be prepared in case the Kingler came charging at Zappy again, So I needed to raise Zappy deffenses. "Alright Zappy, we're out of physical range, but not out of the soup yet. We gotta be prepared in case that thing comes at you head on, so you have to protect yourself. Use Reflect to try and block any attacks that come next!" I told Zappy. Immediately, a giant orange sphere sprang to life out of nowhere around Zappy, protecting it from any harm the Kingler might try and do. But, I had to stay alert. If that Kingler tried hard enough, I was sure it would find a way to break open the Reflect sphere, and that would leave Zappy in some big danger.

Zappy began backing away, dodging the Kingler's murderous scythe. It ran away, scattering mud and dirt at the Kingler as it did so. A few splotches of mud landed on the Kingler's face, but it soon caught on and it used its claws to shield its eyes before any irritating sand could make it lose sight of its foe.

"Alright Zappy, we're out of physical range, but not out of the soup yet. We gotta be prepared in case that thing comes at you head on, so you have to protect yourself. Use Reflect to try and block any attacks that come next!" Master advised.

Zappy's fur stood on end, and a large grey pane of energy swirled into existence in front of Zappy, between her and the Kingler. The Kingler began scuttling towards Zappy on its side, and its speed began getting greater and greater as it did so. An unintended side effect of its many legs was that its underside became coated with mud again. As it was moving towards Zappy, its claws began to glow white...

"Alright Zappy, its coming towards you again this time, and it looks like it wants a fight. So let's try to calm it down a bit. Start off with an agility heading right for it!" I yelled. At the command, Zappy immediately burst off into a blur, rushing right for the Kingler. If Zappy connected at that speed, it and the kingler would be severly hurt, maybe even knocked out. But, i wasn't about to let that happy to my jolteon. I had a plan. Last time, the Kingler kept from being paralyzed by bracing itself and using protect. This time, it shouldn't be so lucky. I was going to have Zappy leap straight over the Kingler, sending out the sparks from its thunder wave when its right above the Kingler, hopefully paralyzing it. If Jolt was moving at the speed it was, the Kingler would have a hard time seeing it coming and deffending against it.

I then flashed back to one of my battles before I came out here. Something similar had happened. Zappy had been facing down a Staryu, which had tried the same tactic. I had realized this, and, after incresing Zappy's speed to an amazing amount, was able to paralyze the thing with a well timed and perfectly performed jump. I just hoped Zappy could do it again. If it didn't, it would be in a lot of trouble later on.

"Zappy, when you get close to the Kingler, I want you to jump as high up in the air as you can, avoiding its claws. Then, when you're centered over the Kingler, dig deep inside and release a thunder wave strong enough that the sparks paralyze it even when your away from it. If we do it right, it should be much easier from here on out!" I yelled to Zappy. I just hoped that this plan worked without any problems.

Zappy accelerated towards the incoming Kingler, using the speed of the Agility in an insane short-term burst as opposed to conserving it for later. The Jolteon was a yellow blur as it moved towards the Kingler. A long furrow was left in the ground where Zappy passed, and small yellow sparks could be seen crawling around in the grass and wet sand. When she was the right distance away, Zappy jumped high into the air. The Kingler saw this, and so it stopped moving, waving its glowing claw menacingly and the incoming yellow streak.

Zappy landed hard on the Kingler, and when she did a bright yellow burst of electricity radiated outwards from her, easily ten metres in radius. The Kingler was electrocuted by the burst, but it was not paralyzed. It smashed the glowing claw into Zappy, sending the Jolteon spiraling away towards the water. Zappy landed hard in the sand next to the lake. The Kingler bubbled in glee, and it began scuttling towards Zappy. I knew that even if Kingler wasn't feeling the effects of the Thunder Wave just yet, it soon would be. The best way for this battle to play out right now was for Master to go on the defense for a while, waiting for the Kingler to slow down.

"Alright Zappy, that thing's got you down, and it looks like its going to try for the kill next. If it knocks you into the water, you're done for. You gotta get out of there, and fast. Use Agility to make a large circle around the Kingler and into the trees. From there, it should have a hard time hitting you, and it will give it some time to feel the paralysis. But make sure to go in a wide arc around it. That'll build up your speed, helping you make the jump, and it should also keep you away from the Kingler, since you know you can outrun it. Also, when you get up to the tree, be prepared to jump around from tree to tree to avoid any and all attacks it might throw at you. If it manages to hit you, you'll probably fall out of the tree, and injure yourself even more than it would," I called out to Zappy, hoping it would get the message and move before the Kingler got to it and whacked it good into the water.

Zappy got to her feet and blurred away from the Kingler. It lashed out with both claws but the agile little dog-like Pokemon easily avoided the ham-fisted attacks. It streaked past us, and began jumping off trees until it was standing on a solid branch overlooking the battlefield.

I stuck out my arm in front of Zappy's Trainer. "We better move back a bit," I said, "we don't want to be caught in the middle of this." I moved backwards with Master, until we were clear out of the firing line.

The Kingler turned to locate the Jolteon, moving noticeably slower. When it saw the Jolteon standing in the tree, it launched a torrent of seawater at the Jolteon from its mouth. The water was more like a mortar shot than a direct attack, it arced up into the air so it could strike its target from above.

"Zappy, look out for that attack! it's coming down at you like a mortar!" I yelled as I watched the Brine arch in the air, coming down in a divebomb, aiming straight for Zappy. I knew that even with its speed, if Zappy tried to jump from its branch to another, it would jump straight into the attack. Had to give it to it, the Kingler was clever.

    But not clever enough.

I had a strategy of my own. From earlier, I remembered how Thundershock had arched like a mortar. If Kingler could fire off a mortar, I could launch one too. Only, electricity doesn't get knocked apart like water does. Unfortunately, I knew there would be some residual affect of the water when it hit, just like how when Fly had destroyed the Wailmer's water pulse earlier, the fragments of it had still hurt him.

Fortunately, Jolteon had a good way of deffending, unlike Fly.

"Alright Zappy, fire off a Thundershock, just like before, and arch it so it breaks right through the Brine! But be careful. The second you fire off that Thundershock, activate a Light Screen, that way the remains of the Brine won't hurt you so badly," I explained to Zappy. I felt a little silly, explaining things like that to a poke. But that's how I did it.

The second you fire off that Thundershock, activate a Light Screen, that way the remains of the Brine won't hurt you so badly," Master yelled.

Zappy's fur stood on end, and a comparatively small electrical jet launched up into the air, heading for the Brine attack. The two met about ten metres above Zappy. The Thundershock cut through the head of the Brine attack, shredding the water to pieces. It continued heading up, though, over the rest of the Brine attack. But that wasn't a problem. Zappy followed through on the second part of its attack - a light blue square made out of electrical sparks shedded from Zappy's fur coalesced into the tangible form of a Light Screen.

The light blue shield also raised to anticipate the Brine attack. The Brine wasn't really dangerous anymore, though - considering the head of the attack had been destroyed it was more like the water was being poured on Zappy as opposed to being shot at her. Most of the water was successfully deflected onto the ground by the Light Screen, and only a small portion landed on Zappy. But even then, minimal damage was done. It was more like a bath than an attack.

Meanwhile, the Thundershock had reached the pinnacle of its arc and was heading downwards towards the Kingler. It took a few steps backwards, but the lightning strike was too fast to dodge. It struck the Kingler square on the back of its shell, but thanks to the relatively weak attack and Kingler's buffed up Special Defense it didn't do much damage either. Kingler raised itself up, preparing another long range attack, but suddenly its legs collapsed underneath it. It was finally starting to be affected by the paralysis.

"Alright Zappy, now is the time to move in a little and make it harder for that thing to hit you! First, jump down, with your back to the Kingler. Then dig your claws into the ground, and furiously throw some dirt at its eyes with your back legs, lowering its accuracy! That should make it harder for it to hit you, allowing you to take have an easier tme avoiding damage! Once you've done that, spin around to face it, and get rid of that boosted attack of its, making sure it does less damage to you with its physical attacks! Reach down inside your heart, and let out a loud, piercing cry. That should scare it a little, calming it down and getting rid of its high attack boosts. Once those two attacks are done, jump back up to your tree and await its next move. But be wary. If it stops being paralyzed and comes at you, stop the attack you're performing and get back to the tree as soon as possible, keeping yourself out of harm's way," I shouted to Zappy. She mmediately jumped off the tree, aiming to try and land close to the Kingler to begin its Sand-Attack Growl combo, irritating the Kingler and probably saving Zappy at the same time. I just hoped that the Kingler would stay paralyzed long enough for Zappy to finish and get back to the safety of its tree.

Zappy hooted assent, and she dropped to the ground before moving a little closer to the Kingler. She then turned around and used her powerful back legs to send a small storm-cloud of dirt flying towards the incapacitated Kingler. It twisted and shuddered, trying to avoid the dust, but it was still paralyzed. The dirt landed all around its face and in its eyes, reducing its vision. Zappy then turned around and slowly backed away from the Kingler, growling ferociously as she did so. Again, the Kingler tried to move away, but it could not.

When Zappy had reached the tree, she scampered gracefully up to her branch, and shot a proud look at her Trainer. She had performed the combo flawlessly. Meanwhile, the Kingler had finally reasserted temporary control over its legs. It concentrated, and I just barely heard a low-pitched muttering sound. Suddenly, six rocks flew out of the lake, heading for Zappy. Two were aimed at the base of the tree Zappy was in and four were moving in a buckshot pattern, attempting to anticipate Zappy's retreat. This would be interesting - Zappy probably wouldn't be able to pull off a simple dodge.

"Alright Zappy, that thing is getting better. Its aiming at the base of the tree, and the space around you. You have to be careful when trying to get past them, or else you'll get more hurt than otherwise. But I have a good plan for you. I want you to fire off a trump card at the rock closest to you, then use quick attack right after the the Trump Card. It should either destroy the rock completely, or at least knock it off path, making it miss or graze you. But don't worry. Your Light screen should protect you from most damage that you could sustain if it tries to hit you. But be careful. Make sure to follow the Trump card so you don't hit the rock head on, or else you'll be in some serious trouble. And, as soon as you hit the ground, I want you to skid a little on the landing, spraying some more sand into the Kingler's eyes, then I want you to run into the woods. Make that stupid Kingler have to work to come and try and get you. Don't give it an easy time." I yelled, hoping Zappy would act before the tree fell, and would act fast enough to avoid the tree.

Following Master's orders, Zappy leaped off the tree, straight towards the rock heading for her. Multicoloured energy gathered in a star-shape in front of her head, and just before the rock hit her, she fired it point-blank. The energy ball hit the rock and exploded, leaving little confetti-like sparks to fall to the ground. Unfortunately, the Trump Card wasn't as powerful as Master was hoping. It made a dent and knocked the rock slightly off-path, but Zappy still crashed into the rock. Luckily for her, her Light Screen zipped in front of her just before it made contact and it took the brunt of the attack. The other rocks lost forward momentum once they passed her, and they fell onto the ground with a heavy thud.

Zappy landed near the Kingler, and she ran up to it and scattered yet more sand its face before running away. The Kingler tried to grab her, but she was much too fast and it could see what it was doing. Its mouth foamed up in rage, and it made an angry bubbling sound. It began scuttling towards the lake, waving its claws unhappily.

"I think it's trying to make a run for it," I yelled.

"Well, Zappy, it looks like its trying to leave us. I think its starting to get a little bored with this fight, since we're just sitting around and annoying it. I think we should give it a reason to come bac to us and fight us some more, don't you think so? I think so. How about you try and get up into that tree next to you, and try to snipe it with another Trump Card, hmm? If we get it mad enough, it should come back, looking for a fight. If that trump card doesn't work though, then just try and use a quick attack from behind to give it a little push, and annoy it even more. Like a little kid. Egg it on, and it comes back, angrier than ever, and looking for a real fight. That should keep it niceand interested. So, let's go on and try it, then." I told Zappy.

Zappy immediately lept up the tree, fll of renewed vigor, as fast as she could; it seemed she wanted to get some more action and fight a little more, too, instead of just sitting around and doing nothing. She seemed happy to let a little loose, to actually hit the Kingler, instead of playing a game of cat and mouse with it. When she gt up there, she let out a little growl, somethin that I think was her version of a warrior's cry. Kingler was the prey, and the hunt was to begin anew.

She then immediately started glowing in a multitude of colors; a star shaped form of energy appeared before her, glowing brighter and bigger than the last one. She gave another warriors cry, and fired it off at the Kingler, then tensed her muscles, just in case she had to jump off and whack the Kingler from behind to enrage it again with the same renewed vigo she had previously discovered.

Master ordered his Jolteon to try and get Kingler interested in the battle again by using a long-range Trump Card attack, and then Quick Attacks to follow up in case it didn't work. Zappy jumped to a closer branch and fired another Trump Card at the Kingler. The Kingler was already in the water, scuttling away. The multicoloured star splashed into the water near the Kingler, sending droplets flying all over. The Kingler shot Zappy a tired look as if to say, Call me when you want a real fight.

Zappy decided it was time to get physical. She growled fiercely, and blurred down the tree and along the sand. She was running so fast that when she went into the water a small trench was cut through it that the water stayed out of for a few seconds before flowing back into. Zappy headbutted, bit, and scratched the Kingler at lightning speed. The Kingler swung its claws around clumsily, trying to hit Zappy.

And then the worst happened. The Kingler got in a lucky shot. Its smaller claw caught Zappy by her upper chest, and he pushed her down into the water. Zappy struggled to get free, but she couldn't. For all her speed and power, the Kingler far outstripped her in pure physical might. She continued to struggle, but the Kingler bubbled victory. It knew the Jolteon wouldn't be able to hold its breath much longer.

Oh no, I thought. Zappy's done for. She's stuck underwater, and going to drown, and that Kingler has her in a grip s hard she can't get out! I'm a horrible trainer. I let my pokemon fall into danger, and now I have to save her. My mind raced to come up with a plan good enough to get Zappy free from the Kingler. Finally, I came to a solution. The water was the Kingler's element, but it would also be its downfall. Zappy was being held by the Kingler, and its fur standing straight up must have been touching the Kingler, meaning Zappy and the Kingler were connected to each other, and therefore made a closed circuit. If a bolt of electricity were to go through Zappy, it would go through Kingler as well, and back to Zappy, then back to Kingler. Since most of the electricity would be contained within this circui, and because of Zappy's earlier Roar, there shouldn't be enough power for the electricity to seep into the lake, and harm the other pokemon. Once the electricity went through the Kingler enough, it would be hurt enough to let Zappy go, and shecoul swim out of the water. All we needed to start this process was a bolt of electricity.

Fortunately, my little fox of a pokemon could easily generate such an electrical bolt.

"Zappy, you have to get yourself free from the Kingler's grasp! I need you to make sure your fur is touching the Kingler, then unleash a Discharge throughout your own body. It should send the Kingler a repeated shock, eventually making it weaken its grip, and allowing you to swim to the top of the lake and back to shore safely. Please Zappy, hear this quickly, before its too late..." I yelled into the water, hoping, no, praying that Zappy would get out of this andbe OK. If anything happened to her, I would just be too saddened.

Master was screaming for Zappy to try and escape using Discharge, but I knew there was no way she'd be able to hear the command that far away. My hand started drifting down towards my belt, preparing to intervene to save Zappy's life.

But before I could do so, Zappy started releasing electricity in a last-ditch effort to escape. She was hurting herself a bit, thanks to the conductivity of the water, but the Kingler was being hurt much more. Finally, the Kingler couldn't stand it any longer. He backed away, letting Zappy float to the surface. As soon as she took a big gulp of air, she began swimming towards the sandy banks. But the Kingler wasn't going to let victory escape his grasp so easily. He began moving towards Zappy. Unfortunately for Zappy, as she was in the water the Kingler was faster than her. However, she would at least be able to hear Master's commands now. Maybe he could come up with a plan.

"ALRIGHT ZAPPY," I screamed to her. "JUST TRY AND SWIM TO LAND. IF THAT KINGLER GETS TOO CLOSE, I WANT YOU TO JUMP UP, AND TRY A DOUBLE KICK ON IT. TRY AIMING FOR ITS CLAW, BUT THE OUTSIDE OF IT. DON'T LET IT HIT YOU DOWN. STAY ABOVE. IF YOU HIT IT, I WANT YOU TO PROPEL YOURSELF AWAY FROM IT AND TOWARDS LAND. THE FORCE SHOULD TAKE YOU MUCH CLOSER, AND I THINK A QUICK BURST OF SPEED FROM A QUICK ATTACK WILL PUT YOU VERY CLOSE."

I thought about this plan for a few minutes longer, then realized something. If Zappy tried that attack, but it somehow hit her back, she could end up even farther from land, and be a gonner. Then, I realized something that should stop that problem. "ZAPPY," I called out to her. "IF THE KINGLER IS ABOUT TO SWIPE AT YOU, I WANT YOU TO SEND A SMALL SHOCK THROUGH IT. IT DOESN'T NEED TO BE ANYTHING BIG, JUST SOMETHING WITH ENOUGH POWER TO STOP IT FOR A SECOND FOR YOU TO GET FARTHER AWAY. JUST BE CAREFUL, I COULDN'T BEAR IF ANYTHING HAPPENED TO YOU, ZAPPY."

Master was yelling and screaming at Zappy, telling her to get back to land. I heard real panic in his voice, but he actually had nothing to worry about. If the Kingler started threatening Zappy's life, Dual could get her out of there inside of three seconds.

Zappy was madly dog-paddling towards the shore, but the Kingler was moving faster. It surged through the water, looking for all the world like an angry orange shark chasing a helpless puppy dog. When it was close enough, it swung its large claw at Zappy. Fortunately, the water impeded it's movement and slowed it down so that Zappy could kick off of it. She flew over the water for a couple metres, regaining the lead, and she managed to pad up onto land and away from the water before collapsing onto the sand, panting. The Kingler followed her up, in much better shape, but half of its legs suddenly seized underneath itself, and it fell onto the ground.

The battle was beginning to take its toll on both combatants. Master would need to start thinking about the capture soon - the Kingler had almost left from boredom once, and to entertain it much longer would be risking Zappy's life.

I watched as Zappy collapsed on the beach, extremely injured, half fainted. Fortunately, the Kingler looked in much worse shape. Its legs had buckled under it, and it looked pretty wounded. A nice shot at this point would take it down, and all that work would be for nothing. Zappy, one of my most precious mons, would have taken all that abuse. And it would all go to waste in one single attack. I couldn't live with that. But, I knew I had a terrible chance at catching the Kingler at this point. All I needed was a little more, and I would be golden.

Fortunately, I knew Zappy could give it. She had pulled through tough times before. Some of the worst times were in regular battles back home. One in particular was extremely challenging. I watched as Zappy Hit the Lanturn again, and again. It had taken plenty of damage, and was near its demise. Zappy had half blinded the thing, and had unleashed hell upon it with Trump Card after Trump Card. It was the last shot. Lanturn looked right into Zappy's eyes, and readied itself. Zappy had taken quite a beating already, being almost as low as the Lanturn. A single blow, and she would faint. Unfortunately, the lanturn knew this too, as it fired off a stream of bubbles at Zappy as she prepared to do a finishing blow. The bubbles surged forward, about to engulf Zappy, and send her down. Zappy braced herself...for nothing. The Lanturn had been too blinded to find Zappy, and had instead sent the bubbles just barely off to the side of Zappy. She had the slight hint of a smile on her face, one of relief, and of happiness. She fired off the last, and largest, Trump card, right into the Lanturn. The bright red star traveled in a straight line, as terror spread across the face of the lanturn, as it realized it had failed to finish off Zappy and was now doomed. The blast hit it square in the face, and Zappy knew she had finished it off, against almost all odds. Then came in an already weakened Gyarados, which was quickly finished off with a Thundershock. Zappy charged up, and sent the dazzling bright yellow bolt straight into the air, only to watch it come down in an arc and hit the Gyarados between the eyes, ending it and finishing the battle...

My thoughts trailed off and the memory ended as I realized what I needed to do. "Zappy," I cried. "I need you to do one last attack. I need you to send out a single thundershock, which should just bring the Kingler down close enough. Once you bring down that bright bolt crashing upon its head, you can come back, and take a nice, long, peacful rest." Zappy stood up with renewed energy, and charged up a small Thundershock, just enough to hopefully hurt the Kingler enough to catch it.
