Idk if it's the same as the Duel Peninsula idea Comm mentioned, but these are the basics of the Yu Gi Oh Duelist Kingdom ripoff idea I had in AIM Chat the other day.

All players start with A amount of tokens
The first phase is unlimited battling between participants, no set schedule, just do what you want.
Wager tokens in battles against other competitors, etc.

First X people to reach Y number of tokens advance to knockout finals phase. (Either 4 or 8 for simplicity, 4 probably easier)
If tournament has gone on for Z amount of time with no conclusion, select a suitable end point and the top X are selected for the knockout.

Yea, we've actually done this before. It can also be combined with other rules!

I like Duel Peninsula style that actually sounds really fun and combines Ladder with Knockout in a way. Plus we could use other rules in conjunction like Smores mentioned.

I do wanna throw my opinion out here (might not be popular but wanted to mention it :S ). I don't really like the idea of a GBA Tourney. I know they've been done before, but I feel like it kind of defeats the purpose of URPG battles and, furthermore, we might as well just run a URPG-exclusive Tourney on PS (which is a totally possible option btw). That's just my opinion, I know there are plenty of people who would want it.

GBA sounds fun and great and the best idea since sliced bread, but it ends up being tedious and much much longer due to limited options and anything with resttalk can just stall forever generally. I'm p against it after the last one.

I like the DP idea but where the highest 8 after like 2 weeks or maybe a month get shoved into a bracket and have to duke it out to determine final placings. P cool twist on a p good tourney imo

The reason I feel GBA tourney is a good idea, is simply because it's the most accessible. Think about it. Newer members who aren't as well versed in URPG battles are more likely to be comfortable with the style of battle from the games they love. There isn't a huge inherent advantage based off of how many EMs your mons have. It's still different because of the lack of nature/evs/ivs. And theoretically battles should go quicker and stall moves would be limited.

It's a simpler format that lets everyone have a fair shot, is easy to ref, and can be modified. Sure, it's not as exciting as regular URPG battles, but there is a reason so many more Pokemon are considered viable in the actual game versus the URPG.

I can see why some people like GBA Battles, and that's totally fine like I see their appeal, but personally I don't like it. There are other ways to appeal to new members and balance the playing field, but also consider that if they don't have the EMs/Hidden Ability already bought they still can't use it anyway.

I gotta fundamentally disagree with you here, I find that there are way more viably competitive Pokemon in URPG than in-game/Showdown with the lack of the 4-move-limit. Many Pokemon become extremely versatile with the ability to stall, recover, attack, boost, and phase all in one.

The easiest ways to appeal to newer members are Battle Factory (random mons that are fully EMd) or Budget (everybody starts with some cash and has to buy stuff).

I personally would like to see the Ability Shift next. Or maybe Sketchmons (every Pokemon gets X amounts of extra moves from the entire movepool of Sketchable moves, might want to limit stuff like Tail Glow, Shell Smash, etc. though) or Typemons (the entire teams gets X amounts of extra moves to be distributed, all moves must be of the same type).

Also, the problem with GBA is that it is incredibly easy to stall because urpg doesn't have normally occurring critical hits. Pretty much means you can boost defense with out a lot of worry. Also because a lot of people don't have moves like Toxic

Now, I understand what you're saying. Some Pokemon (like Raichu) find a niche because of their huge movepools. However, I find Pokemon from more recent generations to be horribly limited in their movepools. Like, only a handful of competitive Pokemon come out of each new gen, and the rest are forced to stay mediocre until they finally get new support. As well, those few Pokemon that happen to be good in game and have a wide movepool to pick from become gods in the URPG and every pokemon becomes judged on its ability to matchup against those gods.

I disagree. Just because everyone is on the same footing with EMs and mon availabilities doesn't mean that they know what moves are necessary. Or even that they have the experience needed to think of all options. The idea of easing URPG mechanics with a familiar battle style is the calling card of the GBA tourney. I remember as a noob being able to beat vets by finding niche mons and strategies (explosion on an electrode to get rid of Swampert, Pain Split on Forretress to wall things). There are so many new things to try and work with and around to get a lead.

This is a valid point, however if you were to take stall moves, you lose out on actual attacking moves and that could be your downfall. Think something fast with Taunt.

First of all, I'm not against the GBA Tourney - I like it and would like to see it run again. However I fail to see how it eases people into URPG mechanics. Other than the stat spread that we use, the GBA Tourney is completely different to URPG mechanics. I like that we run it - its a nice change from the usual, I'm just missing your point here.

The problem with GB is that you honestly can't have a way to deal with everything. All it takes is like Cosmic Power/ResTalk/Stored Power something to just stall a team to death, or literally any variation of this for which there are tens of options. Things like Swampert or Dragonite or Tyranitar - things that would be really OP without their 4x weaknesses all have to be addressed by multiple mons. Your Starmie died and you have no more Ice moves? Dragonite will just flatten your team. All you need is the right combination of bulk and anything else.

Oh but you can just Taunt right? Taunt is pretty rarely used when someone has fifty or sixty moves at their disposal, no way would I choose that over coverage.

people tend to forget that URPG everything is far bulkier because of our stats system, even though you'd imagine same bulk because max EVs and IVs in everything. I guess I'll just be a pain and demonstrate this next GB tourney ;)

Yea, pretty much what Syn said. Teambuilding /picking specific moves is a lot more critical in GBA. Actually thinking it over GBA is probably harder for new members than regular URPG (unless they like play competitively)

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I think a double battle tourny would be cool. Also, if we want some sort of new member reach out program, the Clan Wars is kind of a good way of doing that if it ever got rebooted

Basically, I feel like it evens the playing field and allows newer players to compete by putting in a little effort. URPG players aren't experts and don't have their usual crutches, new players can find creative things to do, and it shows the differences between natures and specialized evs. Maybe that might not seem like a big deal, but it changes a one hit KO on a lot of things to at least a two hit. That opens up opportunities for all kinds of different plays.

I understand the point, but I think that's what makes it interesting. You aren't just going to bring a bunch of sweepers to the battle. You need to bring support and walls. You can't have one pokemon dominate the whole thing. It brings a different flavor and allows for more comebacks than how much I feel the URPG does.

You bring a Blaziken and it gets setup but only has a fire and fighting move? Hey, bring something else in that can resist that and make a play. The greninjas, dragonites, etc. don't have their ridiculous coverage and movepools and you have to think out your coverage before picking it.

Wouldn't you think they would have some idea of how competitive battling works before joining the URPG? I mean, they are on a Pokemon forum. They have to at least be aware of it. Saying they have no idea discredits the fact that there are actual guides and such compiled that they can just google.

I'm sorry but it just doesn't change my personal opinion lol. It's just way too limiting for me, and I think that while the arguments that it levels the field for newer players and allows other Pokemon to shine are true, that's because it's a game mode completely different than what URPG Battling usually is. Cranidos was a super-star in Devo Tourney to the point where it had to be banned, for example. I think there are much fewer viable Pokemon with the 4 move limit, and each Pokemon only really gets a few tricks. We'd probably just end up with everyone using OU or whatever Ubers they can get and the newer players will still be forced to choose from level-up moves mostly and suckier mons so the field is still pretty uneven (it almost always is). Also, you made the point that Blaziken/Greninja aren't as potent in GBA, but there's a reason they're Ubers regardless of URPG.

That being said, I'm not saying no to a GBA tourney. I've swallowed my pride and even hosted a tourney with rules I didn't like before, but I'm saying that, if we're gauging interest, I probably wouldn't enter because it just defeats the purpose of URPG battling to me.

Oh hey look a suggestion for a tourney that won't be as lame as randoms!!!!

I was playing with the bracket site thing that we use for tourneys, Challonge or whatever it's called, and apparently they have an option where you can do a World Cup style tourney. I actually thought this would be really cool for a future tourney, so I'm gonna drop it here and suggest it. In case no one here knows/can't remember what the World Cup is, it's basically a football (or soccer if you're American) tournament where a bunch of countries meet in one country (like Brazil) and play in a group stage with three other teams, and then the top two go into a bracket. Difference here is instead of fighting over a football, we're making our Pokemon fight for us. Groups are typically groups of four, but we can adjust that for our own purposes.

Thought I'd suggest that since it sounded cool, make of it what you will!!!!
