Can I just ask what the appeal of the Budget Tournament is?

I don't really get how that's much different than just a rental tournament where you get to use less moves. Also, it doesn't really open the door for any new strategies (like say the Basics tournament does) because all of the good Pokemon in the mart / Simple Pokemon (the ones that are worth spending your Budget funds on) are already being used. From what I understand (I was away during it), the best part about the last budget tournament was the ridiculous prizes that people got away with by basically not spending any of their money.

I like it because you aren't limited to the pokemon you own or pokemon randomly assigned to you (a la battle factory), It gives you the opportunity to play with interesting pokemon you've never owned before in a competitive environment. Obviously there is every chance that someone will just want to use togekiss/blaziken/ditto/greninja but that could be easily discouraged by pricing them higher.

Also the prizes in the last were ridic and obviously should not carry into the next budget tourney

I had quite a fun idea potentially, which could mix a lot of ideas together:

A Round Robin Doubles Tournament (Round Robin just because of the scarcity of people) using both Budget and GBA rules, an extra twist being with that you are assigned a partner, with more experienced players been given noobs like myself. Easy reffing, Budget aspect and some fun teamwork aspects.

Still, if I had to choose one I'd go with Felly's.

I think at this point we need to just choose one and develop it. After speaking with some other people last night, I am personally really in favor of a double elimination tournament. We have quite a few suggestions atm for possible tournament content. So far we have budget, legendary, nuzlocke, doubles/VGC (not the suggestion above; i think a multi tourney is just too hard for the battlers to schedule), park-themed, and RSE.

    my weigh in

budget: this one is probably the best suggestion imo. this creates the most even playing field and becomes a tourney of skill level rather than who has the better pokemon. i don't think it will be too repetitive after thinking about it because there are a solid 30 or so pokemon that are definitely useable that are available within a pretty reasonable price range.

legendary: this is one of those ideas that sound like they could be good and different, but it just wouldn't be very fun i'd imagine. there would be no balance and it would just be far too centric and far more repetitive than budget.

nuzlocke: seems pretty meh. this seems to give the advantage to people with lots of good pokemon while seriousy disadvantaging people who have maybe 10 good pokemon. someone who has like 40 well em'd pokemon is not really limited even if they lose 10 of them throughout (which is p unlikely) if they are that good tbh.

doubles/vgc: seems pretty fun imo but refs never want to ref these. also, worth noting that doubles victor often comes down to who abuses a strategy the most rather than who plays the best (discharge, rain and intimidate teams come to mind)

park: seems like a lot of work meaning most likely a prolonged tourney. also very luck based.

all things considered i think budget is by par the best option, just with removing or reducing the monetary gain from placing in this.

I'm not gonna really comment on budget tourney except to say that I don't want it. That's a biased personal opinion though. I just hate money management and don't think it would be fun for me personally. I do think that it would be fun for others though, so if that's what the general consensus is, then I don't see any reason for not making that our next tourney.

you can say all you want that you can balance or tier legends, but you really can't. no matter if there are one really op mon per team it would revolve around constantly setting up screens and baton passing to that op mon. it would always be a team of arceus + support. also lets not forget how ridiculously long these battles would be. any legend only tourney would be pretty awful no matter how you try and shape it up.

also you can't really dismiss budget because you don't like management. it's vastly favoured by most people or people are indifferent and want a new tourney.

worth noting that i'm saying how overcentralised and long for everyone legendary would be vs dismissing because you dislike it. people seemed to enjoy the last budget from what i heard

Tagging @Ash K.; to maybe expand on legend tourney 'cause it didn't work when Swifty did it.

Also posting to say that Nuzlocke would need further development, definitely, & would definitely not be ready for a September launch. A tourney like that would be more preferable in the summer months when activity is higher & people have more time. Definitely not something for now. I wouldn't mind developing it further if people wanted me to though. There would likely be some kinks in it, of course, but nothing we couldn't work out. :3

Also, in regards to Budget Tourney, I'm kinda on the fence about it, but like Swifty, if it's what people want, then I don't have a problem having that as our next tourney. It sounds interesting, but then it doesn't sound like it'd be super fun, at least for me. I don't think we should dismiss it completely (which isn't what Swifty did, by the way), but I do think we should weigh our options and maybe not rush into another tourney.

Well i think it'd be a lot better to have a consistent stream of tourneys with a 2-3 week max seperating them, rather than a tourney ends and then wait a few weeks until enough people complain before trying to decide next tourney.

There have been two relatively small tournaments since 2014 began. That could've easily been around 5.

That's a rough draft from last year. It was before generation 6, so some changes are needed. Also probably worth mentioning (in response to Synthesis) there are only three Baton Passing legends: Mew, Zapdos, and Celebi. Open to any sort of modifications, that's just a year old draft.

I didnt dismiss anything. I literally directly stated that disliking the budget tourney was my personal opinion and that we should do it anyway if thats what people want.

lol budget tournament generally seems lame to people who have / can amass large sums of money quickly (generally refs) and exciting to others. I agree though that the arguing over which tournament should be next is sorta dumb and id much rather just do a tournament. That way if it turns out poopy we can just plug another one right in!

Also, my assumption was that the budget tournament would use the mart / predetermined prices. if that's incorrect then I don't necessarily have a qualm with the tournament. But while there may be 30 good Pokemon which are available, Blaziken and Greninja are two very available Pokemon that I can only imagine would be on damn near every team. How is that not extremely centralizing?

But again, I don't super care. Let's just have a tournament lololol

P sure everyone will have a greninja/blaziken but talonflame is p easy to get too. playing anti-meta is so much easier in budget and then you can decide if worth eming !

ok SO we did go into more depth on the discussion of developing the Budget Tournament on AIM and Skype. This isn't 100% the next tourney, but it seems pretty likely. The following points have been made, and are open to discussion. Feel free to replace them with your own, or improve them. (Dont be afraid to like them either! =P )

-Budget should be 100K for Pokemon and 100K for EMs. The additional amount you receive each round is halved.

-Pokemon are Tiered based on usability and priced accordingly. Under the double-budget, Pokemon would be pricey. Initial tiering is already done, but needs some updates. Can be found in the Battle Factory Thread somewhere if someone wants to dig that up and post it here that would probably be helpful.

-Tentative prizes: 10% of leftover money with 20K cap and a 5K minimum dependent on placement. Also Pokemon of varying ranks dependent on placement.

Just the ideas we have so far! =)

It'd be cool if there was like a council where tiers could be discussed and Pokemon shifted if there was a majority after voting or s/t.

That list looks mostly good but I would consider Ampharos (tier 3) much better than Azumarill (tier 1) but not everyone might think that. I feel like fixing the tiers would be a bigger project than it seems but I can help if we do do something on it.

Also, I think the proposed pay for tier 1/2/3/4 if we do the double 100k budget was 35/20/15/10.

This makes it impossible to have more than one tier 1 and a full team of 6, and I dont know if that's something we want or not. Opinions?

Not sure if Pokemon with megas should be as high as they'd ordinarily be, since in the last tournament you had to buy helds and evolution items. Megastones will be expensive and probably not used very much anyway. In addition, if a tier 1 cost 20000 more than a tier 3, if a tier 3 pokemon would have a tier 1 mega then the tiering would be correct for those who wanted to use the non-mega form.

EDIT: and it would make all the tier one megas impossible to fit onto your team if we put mega stones in the first budget.

I do agree with what you're saying but there's nothing stopping someone getting a lucario or kangaskhan at their lowish tiers, their mega stone, and 5 decent pokemon and wrecking the tourney.

I feel like pokemon's tiering should be where the pokemon is at their best. This doesnt just apply to the megas, take a look at Ditto. Without items or imposter it'd definitely be the lowest tier. With HA it becomes a worse version of what you send it in against almost always (300 max HP). It's only with items on that it becomes top tier. The same applies to all pf the megas and they should be tiered accordingly imo.
