Yeah I'd agree with bumping Pokemon with Mega Evolutions down a Tier. I wouldn't just put them all in Tier 3 though. Keep in mind that the Mega Stones fall under a separate budget and that you can only use 1 Mega per battle anyway so being unable to buy more than 1 or 2 Mega-evolvable Pokemon isn't necessarily a large constraint.

EDIT (Syn posted while I made this): we could alternatively just shave 5K off a Pokemon that can Mega Evolve.

As for Syn's point about only being able to have 1 Tier 1 Pokemon with a full team of 6, I think bumping down everything with a mega evolution would remedy that a bit, and I also think that it's a fair trade off to have less variety for more power.

Once we get these last two points sorted out, I'll post sign-ups in the near future. Also huge thanks to smores for the Tiering! :D If anyone has any major issues with the way things are Tiered for the short-term purposes of this tourney, be sure to post here or in the sign up thread when it goes up. Large adjustments should probably be left for a later date.

This is probably a dumb question, but I want to ask anyways. If, in the event we somehow manage to have money left over after buying our Pokemon in the Pokemon budget, what happens to that money? Does it get added to the EM money or does it just disappear completely or what?

Not saying it's actually gonna happen, but figured I'd get some clarification on it while I'm here. Probably already answered, & then I'll just look dumb with my already answered question, but yeah.

probs just carry over into EM budget, reinforces the idea of sacrifice pokemon quality to have more EM's

I have an idea! How about a baby pokemon tourney. A 3 on 3 elimination tournament where only baby Pokemon are allowed! Who will be strongest when using the weakest!

I think that's too similar to the one before the current one (Devolution Tournament, all Pokémon are fully devolved to their lowest form. Unevolving Pokémon and certain Pokémon like Scyther are banned).

I feel like we'll be able to just do Annual Gym Tournament as the next one after the ongoing Budget Tournament. As for the next tournament that isn't that one (whether before or after it), a tournament that only allows lower tiered Pokémon could be fun. Something without chickens and frogs running rampant is always nice.

This is an idea I had that could add a whole new dimension, or be a complete flop: some kind of ability swap tourney. Every ability would be replaced with the effects of the one below it. The reason I went with ability below is that Primordial Sea becomes Protean, but we could do any manner of things. Some interesting mix ups (but there are a lot more):

    Speed Boost Electrode/Exploud/Mr. Mime
    Pure Power Kecleon/Greninja
    Huge Power Combee lol
    Regenerate Aururus
    Prankster Muk/Dragalge/Toxicroak
    Sap Sipper Golem
    Poison Heal Amparos
    Parental Bond Slowbro/Slowking/Ludicolo
    Multiscale Gyarados/Scrafty/Salamence
    Wonder Guard Torkoal/Heatmor
    Shadow Tag Togekiss oboy
    Intimidate Gourgeist
Magnet Pull Camerupt is p funny

Kiss would prob have to use another ability, and maybe torkoal/heatmor but it honestly seems really blanced/refreshing from the 5 mins I spent looking. check it out!!

    Gameboy Clause.

Also, Multi Battles-- choose (or be assigned) a partner, or have a new one each round. It's better than Doubles because you have to not lose and rely on your partner. Teamwork and synergy between teams could potentially win out over brute strength and raw sweeping power.

Ew GB Clause. We've done that before, I'm still very much not a fan.

As for Multi, I actually think it would be cooler if you signed up with a partner and then did bracket/swiss/round robin/whatever with the pairs. Scheduling can be difficult, so obviously don't pick a partner who you are rarely on at the same time as.

If we're looking at Showdown OM of the Month (such as the one in Syn's post), there's some other interesting ones too.

Kind of piggy-backing off you and Ash,

We could do the ability swap thing from showdown a while back. Basically, you could trade abilities among the Pokemon on your team. Something like: Tyranitar: Magnet Pull, Probopass: Snow Warning, Abomasnow: Sandstream.

It made for some cool strategizing. I think certain abilities were banned from being swapped, like Wonder Guard, Huge/Pure Power, and a few others.

Only problem I have with choosing swapped abilities, is there'll always be some OP combo. If it's not protean/parental bond/speed boost, then it could easily be multiscale, prankster, wonder guard, huge/pure power, magic bounce or any of the immunity abilities like Sap Sipper Swampert, Motor Drive Gyara, and so many more. Even semi obscure ones like Thick Fat Nite could be super difficult to get around. It just seems impossible to maintain balance and not limit just about every possible combo imo. Maybe it's doable, but I'm sceptical. This is why I prefer randomly assigned ones. The OP will be few and far between, while just shuffling up the whole metagame, creating one that rewards originality and creativity.

I agree with that I think there are just too many OP combos for that to really make a good tourney. I like the idea of the alphabetical switch since that can be easily controlled.

How about a Tourney where we make everything OP, therefore nothing is OP.

Why not just go with a good old-fashioned Double Elimination Inverse Tourney? Flips the type chart, so Pokemon that are held back by poor typing get a boost, and it gives a chance for all those Defensive Ice-types and Offensive Poison-types to really earn their spot in the stats page.

Many combos will be OP, so it becomes an exercise in getting good combos. If you like minmaxing and stats-- and you guys must, because you're not only pokemon players, but URPGers, whose main source of entertainment is throwing numbers through a calculator-- it'll be the perfect game.

but that's just the point. Personally, I dont want the whole tournament to become "just an exercise in getting good combos." I want it to be about the variety. Something that will make people think. Slapping an OP ability on something with great stats and movepool isn't all that hard.

EDIT: idk how many people like these but maybe Wonder Launcher tourney is an option?
