"A large area where several huge and small freshwater lakes have been placed. The area between each lake is covered with various terrain, from trees to dense grasses to sand paths. This area is very bright because of the sunlight reflecting off the water. Ranger Outpost Number Two is located here."

A nice day, it was. Bright, warm, and a pleasant breeze was blowing. I stood near the dock and breathed in deep, enjoying the scent of seawater and the warm sun on my skin.

I was waiting for the next ferry, which was running about ten minutes late. I'd radioed in to make sure everything was fine, and the captain had assured me they'd just left late. It seemed a few Trainers had gotten lost, and that was the cause of the delay.

I sighed a little and turned, heading inside the Outpost and going to sit behind the counter. I booted up the computer and started randomly going through Trainer files, seeing who'd captured what, checking credentials, seeing if anyone had done the online sign-up that gave them priority over Trainers who did paperwork after getting here. I was nearly finished when I heard a knock at the door. Jumping in surprise, I glanced from the computer screen in time to see the Outpost door swing open. In came a group of about fifteen Trainers, all chatting in eager voices. I grinned at the sight of them, feeling their excitement rub off on me as I stood. I clapped my hands to gain their attention, cleared my throat, and spoke up.

"Right, right, well then, welcome to the National Park, everyone! I'm glad you could all make it. Now, I've been going through files, and it seems only one of you did the online application. Ah, let's see..." I quickly scanned back through the files before finding the one I was looking for. "Mr. Daniel?" At my call, a young man stepped forward. I smiled and nodded at him, then addressed the crowd again. "I'll call for someone to come get everyone else situated. Enjoy your visit!" I then put in a call to one of the off-duty Rangers, waved for Daniel to follow me, and headed through the door that separated the main lobby from the Ranger area. We walked down the bland hallway and exited the building through the rear door. Instead of walking to the golf-cart like vehicles parked in the small parking lot, I came to a stop a few feet from the back door and motioned for Daniel to stand by me.

"Now then, Daniel, we're not taking the a cart to the Great Lakes. Once you get to a certain distance, the wheels on them can't handle the sand and everything. That, and there are a lot of Pokemon around there who are sensitive to vibrations and stuff. We've learned the carts tend to upset a lot of them. Instead, we're going to be teleporting there. Now don't worry, it's safe and painless and you won't even realize it's happening until it's over." I then pulled a Ball from my pack and smiled a little, releasing a child-sized, saffron-skinned Pokemon from within. The Abra materialized sitting down, head against his chest, tail curled into his lap. I grabbed Daniel's right wrist in my left hand and then placed my right hand on the Abra's shoulders. "Poko, take us to the Great Lakes!"

There was a crack and a brief flare of bright light; less than a second of a second later, we reappeared at the outskirts of the Great Lakes. Thanking him, I recalled the Abra and then glanced around. Stretched out for miles before us were huge, crystal-blue pools of water. Between them were beaches covered in yellow-tan sand; there were many Pokemon sunning themselves on the warm sands. When they saw us, a large number of them silently slipped into the nearest pool of water, though some had to search for a suitable pool if they couldn't handle the salt content (or lack thereof) of the one closest to them. I smiled, raising a hand to shield my eyes from the glare of light reflecting of the dozens of pools.

"Well, here we are, the Great Lakes. Here, put these on," I added, pulling two pairs of sunglasses from my pack. They were dark brown and quite stylish, but that didn't matter. They were the HD sunglasses, completely cutting out glare while enhancing color and vibrancy. They came in especially useful here, allowing one to fully admire the area and the Pokemon without constantly squinting against the light reflected from the surface of the water. "Now then, you might be wondering how we go about running into Pokemon here. After all, it's just a bunch of sand and water. Basically, we'll walk around the beaches and see what approaches us. If you have a Pokemon that can swim, you can ride on them in the smaller pools and see what decides to check you out. The bigger, deeper pools are off-limits; to keep Trainers and Pokemon safe from overly-frisky Pokemon, you know.

"Now, if you're ready, let's go see what there is to see at the sea!" I chuckled at my lame joke, which was so stupid it had to be laughed at, then started walking towards the pools.

Wow, I don’t think I’d been this busy in ages. Not that I minded, really; it gave me a chance to run around and get rid of all my extra energy. Not only that, but I always liked watching the Wild Pokemon as they went about their daily lives. I spent so many hours studying the behaviors of the island’s Pokemon I probably qualified as some sort of unofficial expert on them.

I was out doing one of my many Pokemon-tracking bouts when I got a call from the on-duty receptionist of the Outpost at the Great Lakes. Apparently, there was a young woman there by the name of Akinai who was registered to go through the Park. Unfortunately, the Ranger that was supposed to be assigned to her had accidentally been given another Trainer to escort through the Park. I agreed to take her instead and once I’d hung up the phone, I called out Jashen, my Hypno. The Psychic Pokemon blinked slowly and lazily swung his pendant about, finally looking at me with a slightly puzzled expression.

“Jashen, can you get a hold of Shemo and see if he can come take us to the Great Lakes?” I asked. Jashen nodded once and closed his eyes, focusing his mind on locating the little Natu, Shemo. The small bird was a wild Pokemon who, for some reason, had taken to teleporting Trainers and Rangers wherever they needed to go. He was usually in one of the Outposts, but occasionally returned to the wild for short excursions. Despite being wild, he spent more time indoors than most Trainer or Ranger Pokemon.

A few moments passed before a bright flash of light and a loud CRACK signaled that Shemo was indeed free to take me to meet my Trainer. I recalled Jashen after thanking him and went to stand where Shemo had perched on the back of a chair. I smiled in greeting and the bird waved his head feather at me. I reached out and gently placed my hand on the little Natu’s right wing, and within a breath we were gone. When we reappeared, it was outside the Ranger Outpost of the Great Lakes. I blinked at the sudden brightness of the place and hastily went inside, where I saw a young woman with black hair standing around. I went over to her, rubbing my streaming eyes and smiling a bit.

“Man, the light hits you hard here, I swear. I don’t see how people can walk through here without some sort of sunglasses.”

“I’ve got several pairs back here if you need one,” the receptionist piped up. I nodded gratefully and went to collect a pair, then glanced back at Akinai. “Would you like a pair as well? I highly recommend it. Oh, I’m Ranger Arunei by the way. I’ll be taking you through the Park today.”

Akinai fidgeted as she waited in the Ranger Outpost. True, she had signed up to explore the Great Lakes not long ago, but now that she was here, she was a nervous wreck. What if an accident happened? What if they got lost and were unable to find their way back to the Outpost? She knew that she should have bought a Fly HM for Jade before signing up...

Jade, her Flygon, noticed her trainer's fidgeting and lightly batted her on the head with one of her wings. Even though Akinai's starter now towered over her, she still kept Jade out of her Pokeball out of pure habit.

Akinai was knocked slightly off balance at the sudden contact. "What the...and here I thought I was being nonchalant. You know me well Jade. It wouldn't be so bad if I had something to read, it helps take my mind off of things."

The receptionist looked up from reading the logs upon hearing this. "I have a small pamphlet describing the different areas of the Park if you are interested." Akinai gave a small nod in response to this, and gratefully accepted the pamphlet. Within moments she was lost in reading.

“Would you like a pair as well? I highly recommend it." Akinai started as someone in a Ranger uniform approached her, holding a spare pair of sunglasses. "Oh, I’m Ranger Arunei by the way. I’ll be taking you through the Park today.”

"Sorry, I often lose track of time when reading...And yes, please!" As Akinai took the glasses from Arunei, she gave a mental sigh of relief. She had completely forgotten that Trainers enter the park with a Ranger guide. Now there was no way anything could go wrong! "I'm ready to go whenever you are."

Jade, who was lightly dozing in the corner while waiting on her trainer, perked up at this and approached the two. She gave Arunei a cursory examination, then held out one of her claws in a handshake.

OOC: Sorry this turned up a little long, the next ones should be a little shorter.

The teleporting made Daniel naucious. "Ugh...A warning would be nice next time." Daniel's Raichu, Raiguy was already running around having a blast. He liked to jab his tail into the sand and shock it to make small patches of glass. "Sorry about that," Daniel said feeling somewhat guilty, "He does this everywhere we go."

Daniel looks around the lake nervously. He hadn't ever been to the park before and was very eager to explore the area. He immediately walked over to the shore and looked out onto the shining water. He saw some shadows under the water and hoped that they might be Pokemon.

Raichu stuck his tail in the water in an attempt to immitate a Slowpoke he saw across the lake. This worried Daniel, as whatever grabbed his tail would surely get shocked. "Raiguy, cut that out, you're going to fry everything in that lake!" But the Raichu paid no attension to Daniel. It was his natural instinct to cause trouble. All Daniel could do was watch. He glanced breifly over at the rangers and Akinai, but didn't give them much of a thought. He was far too intruiged by the lake. He sat on the shore next to Raiguy, took off his shoes and put his feet in the water. "Thank's for bringing me here Sara! It's awesome!"

I accepted the offered claw and politely shook hands (or would that be paws?) with Akinai’s Flygon, waving away the young woman’s apology after releasing the Dragon’s appendage.

“Don’t worry about it, I’m the same way sometimes. Give me a good book and I’m gone for hours.” I motioned for the Trainer to follow me as I exited the Outpost, nudging my sunglasses higher up my nose with my right index finger. I then reached into one of the many pockets of my overcoat, pulling forth a custom-made blue-silver PokeBall. I tossed it to the ground, where it cracked opn on the sands before flying back into my hand and snapping shut once more. Meanwhile, a long, slender form took shape from the white flood of light released from the Ball, and when the glare faded, my Gorebyss, Suma, was revealed. The hot-pink eel stretched her body and then silently slithered into the nearest pool of water, her head popping back out a second later. The Jolly Pokemon happily sprayed a mist of water into the air, which caused small rainbows to dance across the ground.

“It’s been a while since we’ve come to this area,” I said to no one in particular. “Go enjoy yourself,” I added, speaking to Suma. The Gorebyss gave a tinkling laugh before vanishing beneath the water. I wasn’t worried about her getting left behind or anything; she always seemed to sense when it was almost time to leave and would rejoin us around Akinai’s thirteenth encounter.

Once Suma was underwater, I turned to Akinai and got ready to ask if she was ready to continue. However, I spotted a round green object wiggling about on the sand several feet from where we were, so I remained silent and instead watched the strange shape. After a moment it shifted enough to reveal a chubby blue body waddling along on six stubby legs; it was a Lotad! The small Water/Grass Pokemon paused every few seconds, shaking the large circular leaf on its head as if trying to get rid of a persistent fly.

“Ah, a Lotad,” I said, keeping my voice low to make sure I didn’t accidentally startle the little creature. “I think that’d be the perfect way to start your Park run; they’re fairly easy to battle, and when they’re final form, Ludicolo, is a solid Pokemon. Up to trying your hand at catching it?”

“Aw, don’t worry about it,” I replied as Daniel apologized for Raiguy’s repeated transforming of sand into glass. It was actually kind of neat, and the glass that was formed by the melted sand was smooth and pretty. It had the looked of smoked glass with an amber hue. I gathered up the several small chunks, claiming one as a keepsake and heading over to join Daniel by the pool. I knelt down and held the glass pieces out to him, winking. “Here, you never know if these might come in handy later on.”

I then sat down next to the young man, watching various Pokemon moving around in the distance. Several dozen yards away, a Gyarados rose from one of the larger pools, undulating its way onto the shore and making its way towards another pool. It left a large trail in the sand behind it, which smaller Pokemon immediately rushed to play in. The Gyarados, who was clearly old thanks to the dull slate-blue color of its bleached scales, didn’t seem to care at all about what was happening around it. The other Pokemon didn’t seem bothered by the movement of such a dangerous Pokemon, but there was a reason for it. This particular Gyarados was nearly one hundred years old, and his old age made him very mellow. Oftentimes he could be seen sunbathing, allowing baby Pokemon to clamber over his massive body as they played. None of the other Pokemon feared him, despite his size and species, thanks to the fact that he was so gentle. Rare behavior indeed for a wild Gyarados, old or not.

After a few minutes, the Pokemon’s slow journey saw him reaching his destination. Without a sound he slid into the water and vanished beneath the surface, his tail making only the slightest of ripples as it disappeared from sight. I smiled a little and turned back to ask Daniel what he thought of the oldest Gyarados living on the island. I was distracted by a flash of dark-blue –and-yellow shape darting through the water of the pool in front of us, though, and instinct caused me to push Daniel and Raiguy both back from the water. Just in time, too, as a Carvahna suddenly exploded from the water, its huge white fangs gnashing at where Raiguy’s tail had been seconds ago. The piranha returned to the water with a splash, circling close to the surface. Its twin yellow back fins, along with the top half of its yellow tailfin, protruded from the water, and every so often the fish would arch its head out of the water to watch us with crimson eyes.

“Wow, that was CLOSE!” I exclaimed, watching as the Carvahna continued to swim about threateningly. “Geez, the Carvahna don’t normally act so violent, though they are known for being aggressive. I mean, watch it, it just keeps swimming around glaring at us.” Inresponse to this, the Carvahna poked its head from the pool and shot a pressurized stream of water at Raiguy, making a strange hissing noise as it did. “I think it’s telling us to leave or prepare for a battle. What do you want to do?”

Akinai studied the Lotad carefully as it traveled across the sand. True, Lotad was a solid type choice, and would fill a nice spot on her team... She quickly skimmed her book to find a picture of Ludicolo, read the description, and shook her head sadly.

"True, a Lotad would be a nice addition, but I don't think I could stand the final evolution. Let's just leave it be."

Jade eagerly nodded in agreement. She had taken a quick glimpse at the picture of Ludicolo, and doubted that she would get along with any Pokemon so carefree.

Sara asked Daniel about the Gyarados. "Wow, that looks pretty cool. Does everyone get a chance to see that?" Then, without warning, a Carvanah burst from the water and would have taken part of Raiguy's tail, had it not been for Sara's quick reflexes.

Before Daniel even had time to make a decision about weither or not to battle Carvanah, Raiguy had already fired a thunderbolt at it. "Well, looks like we'll HAVE to battle it now!" Daniel didn't mind all that much. His team lacked a water type and Sharpedo would be a tough opponent for any trainer he had to face.

"Hm...Carvanah has the advantage in water, so we'll have to find a way to get it onto land..." thought Daniel whilst Carvanah was readying his next attack, "Raiguy, use Slam on the water to create a wave!" Raichu was more than happy to oblige. It was clear he didn't like the Carvanah very much anyways. Raiguy slamed the water with his tail as and a large wave shot out at Carvanah. If all went according to plan, Carvanah would fly into the air powerless to do anything. "Now, use thunderbolt!" Daniel prayed his plan would work. Otherwise he'd have to deal with one very angry Carvanah, and possibly a few of his friends.

OOC: Describing your attacks as they happen (or will happen, in the case of combos) will let your attacks not only do what you want them to, they’ll be stronger and have a better chance of getting their secondary effects. Creativity also helps; using Slam to make a wave is a good example of being creative. Keep it up, you’re doing great so far. ^^.

I watched as the angry Raiguy fired off an impromptu Thunderbolt at the water, which Carvahna avoided by flipping into the air. When it landed back in the water it slapped the surface with its body in a way that created a large splash; clearly it was taunting Raiguy’s failed attack.

"Well, looks like we'll HAVE to battle it now!" Daniel replied, but he didn’t sound too upset about it. I nodded and moved a fair distance away to give the Trainer and battling Pokemon plenty of room, then folded my arms and waited to see how things would turn out. Daniel appeared to be thinking about what to do, and after a second called, "Raiguy, use Slam on the water to create a wave!"

Raiguy seemed far too happy to carry out the command, making it obvious how much he disliked the Carvahna. Jumping forward, he whipped his tail around and smashed it into the water as hard as he could. A wave rose from the pool, catching Carvahna as it tried to dive deeper and avoid the attack. As the waev reached its peak, Carvahna was tossed from the water, flailing about with its fins.

"Now, use Thunderbolt!" Daniel ordered. Raiguy gave a cry and clenched his paws into fists, at the same time squeezing the pouches in his cheeks that stored electricity. When the muscles were squeezed, it released a sudden, massive bolt of crackling yellow electricity from the Pokemon’s cheeks, though the size of it made it look like it came from the Raichu’s entire body.

The Thunderbolt sizzled as it tore through the air towards Carvanha, who was still helplessly in the air. Seeing the Thunderbolt coming for it, the fish opened its large jaws wide and fired out several rapid Aqua Jet attacks. The small bullets of crystal-clear water weren’t aimed at Raiguy, though; they were all aimed at the incoming Thunderbolt. It seemed the fish was trying to lessen the force of the attack by sending multiple attacks to absorb some of the electricity.

When the attack struck, though, it still hurt. Carvanha was struck dead-on, and when the electricity coursed through it, the Pokemon let out a hideous, ungodly Screech. I winced as the cry pounded against my ears, but Raiguy, being closer and having more sensitive hearing, nearly fell over. Clutching his ears, the Raichu made an angry sound of pain and backed away from the water.

When Carvanha returned to the water, it immediately dove down deep. It wasn’t fleeing, though. On the contrary, it was getting ready to hit the incapacitated Raiguy with what looked like a Dive. Once it had sunk almost out of sight, Carvanha did a one-eighty and tore through the water, exploding out of it seconds later with surprising force, flying at Raiguy so quickly it was almost a blur.

Raiguy was in great pain after screech was used, and was finding it very hard to concentrate afterwards. Both he and Daniel watched as Carvanah dove back into the water and leaped out with blinding speed.

"Raiguy! Use quick attack to dodge!", screamed Daniel. Unforunately, Raiguy's ears were still ringing from the screech attack he had just suffered, and couldn't hear a word that Daniel was saying! Raiguy would have to improvise another attack to beat Carvanah. With Raiguy's speed, this was no problem. Both he and Daniel knew that if a Pokemon like Carvanah was stuck on land, they would be at a massive disadvantage.

Out of instinct, Raiguy leaped into the air, but not before taking a dive attack to the stomach. This caused him to fly into the air, but in a somersault motion. Raiguy's hearing was begining to return.

"Use thunderbolt straight down!" Daniel realised that the momentum caused by Carvanah's dive attack would cause him to keep moving, even on land. Raiguy fired a jolt of lightning straight down, but struck the ground just in front of Carvanah. Luckily, one of the glass fragments Raiguy had left in the sand was shattered in the process. With Carvanah's hard skin, the glass wasn't enough to do considerable damage to him (Yes, Carvanah is male.), but would phase him so as to prevent him from going back into the water.

"Now! Come down and use slam!" With an aggresion Daniel had never seen expressed by his Pokemon, Raiguy span around whilst striking Carvanah with his tail like an angry windmill in a blur of electricity. It resembled the kind of move you might see in a Pokemon contest, but more powerful. Both Sara and Carvanah realised that with Daniel's strategy and Raiguy's speed (Both of body and of mind), they were a force to be reckoned with.

Daniel readied a Parkball for the capture. "Just a little more!", he said quietly. A voice in Daniel's head screamed, "FINISH HIM!" As Raiguy's tail forced Carvanah into the ground, sand flew in all different directions.

I couldn’t blame Akinai for her decision; there were a lot of people who couldn’t really handle the constant happy-go-lucky attitude of a Ludicolo. Only those people who were themselves always so cheerful could stand being around one for long periods of time. I was proud that Akinai put her feelings into consideration instead of just grabbing everything that might turn out to be strong. After all, if she didn’t like a Ludicolo, that could in turn hurt the Pokemon.

We continued on our way, and I occasionally pointed out something now and then that I thought she might find interesting. One of these was a particular pool of water, which was tinted more green than blue. It wasn’t an ugly color, though; if anything, it was quite pretty.

“This pool is colored like this because of certain mosses that grow in it,” I explained. “We can’t figure out why it won’t spread to any of the other pools, but we’ve sent off samples to a few friends in the scientific community recently, so we hope to have answers soon.” I fell silent when I saw a white shape moving through the water, which soon revealed itself to be a Seel. The Pokemon was coming towards the surface, most likely to get a fresh breath of air, and when its head broke the surface it snorted a fine spray of mist. When it spotted us it made a playful barking sound, slapping the water with its flipper and generally mucking about.

“Well, that one seems friendly,” I said with a smile. “Seel usually are though, so it’s not rare for them to want to play with Trainers who come through.”

Akinai stared at the odd colored pool in interest. It was no surprise that Arunei thought that the strange phenomenon would interest her. After all, she was covered all in green herself. Green shirt, green contacts, green Pokemon...

Speaking of green Pokemon, Jade seemed interested in the pool as well. she hovered closer to the pool to examine...and had to quickly dart out of the way as the Seel broke through the water.

“Well, that one seems friendly,” Arunei said with a smile. “Seel usually are though, so it’s not rare for them to want to play with Trainers who come through.”

Akinai held out her hands apologetically to the seal Pokemon. "I have nothing for you to play with." The Seel shook its head at this, and sprayed a thin stream of water at the Flygon currently hiding behind the trainer.

"I don't think Jade would be able to play with you very long." Akinai couldn't help but laugh as she watched Jade try to rid herself of every last ounce of water. "And if the water bothers you that much, I could always return you to your Ball."

Jade shook herself twice more, then stopped abruptly upon hearing this. Giving one last glare to the Seel, she flew on ahead.

"Jade's pretty stubborn sometimes, but then again I guess that's why we get along. We make a pretty good team when it comes to battling as well. I better go after her and make sure another Water type doesn't get her in trouble." Giving a small grin to Arunei, she moved quickly ahead to catch up with Jade.

OOC: Just a note, Lightning, you can’t say if an attack hits your Pokemon or the Wild Pokemon. Also, you can’t control the Wild Pokemon or the Ranger when it comes to things like “they realized” or that sort of thing.

Also, keep in mind that you want to capture Pokemon, not knock them out. Knocking out a Pokemon will make it unable to be captured.

Raiguy seemed unable to hear Daniel at first, but out of instinct he leapt into the air. Carvanha flew by under him, just barely avoiding a Thunderbolt fired down at him. The attack happened to hit one of the glass patches, though, and the shards of shattered glass flew in all directions. A few pieces bounced off Carvanha’s hard scales, doing little more than slow the fish’s momentum and startle him a bit.

After this, Daniel commanded Raiguy to use Slam again, and Raiguy flipped in midar to lash his tail towards Carvanha. Thankfully, Carvanha was moving so fast that the quick, electrified Slam only grazed the fish’s side. The strength of the blow was minimal, but it was still enough to turn Carvanha’s speed against it. The fish was thrown forcefully into the sand, which flew into the air before coming back down and covering the Pokemon in a fine layer. Stunned and exposed to the hot sun, Carvanha flopped about weakly as its large mouth gaped open.

“You should do something quick, Daniel,” I said, feeling a bit sorry for the fish. “It can’t be out of the water for too awfully long. The sun is too hot and fish Pokemon can hardly breathe when on land.”

OOC: Okay, sorry about that! Now I know!
Also, will Carvanah have Dive if I catch it?
    ====

Daniel looked down at the Carvanah flopping around on the shore. "You should do something quick Daniel," Sara said. It looked just weak enough to capture; perhaps a little too weak. "Ouch...sorry about that, Carvanah..." Daniel said, cringing slightly at the sight of the Pokemon in such pain. It reminded him somewhat of a Magikarp, but more mennacing. "I've made my decision." Daniel crouched down next to the Carvanah and lightly tapped it with one of his Parkballs. The Pokeball opened up, realeasing the standard red beam of light. The red light engulfed Carvanah, sucking him into the Pokeball. It began to blink.

Daniel placed the ball on the ground near the water. He didn't want to be around if Carvanah burst out of the Pokeball and tried to bite his hand right off. Meanwhile, Raiguy was hiding behind Ranger Sara. He uttered a quiet, "Rai..." It was clear Raiguy was still a little nervous from the screech and dive attacks Carvanah had used. "You're not scared, are you Raiguy?" Daniel said somewhat mockingly. Raiguy simply stuck his tongue out at Daniel in response to this.

Daniel looked excitedly at the Pokeball. Either this would be his first ever capture, or his umpteenth disapointment.

Daniel seemed to make up his mind as he watched the Carvanha in the sand flopping around weakly. Cautiously, he went and tapped it with a Park Ball, then took the wiggling sphere and placed it by the water. That was a good idea; if Carvanha broke out, at least it’d go into the water, which would do it some good.

However, the fish never did escape the Ball. After just a few feeble shakes, the Park Ball fell still. I smiled and clapped Daniel on the shoulder, nodding towards the Park Ball lying in the sand.

“Well, you did it! Congrats on your first capture in the National Park!”

“Ah, wait a minute!” I called, hurrying after the Trainer and her Flygon. I caught up with Akainai a few moments later, putting myself in front of her as we headed after Jade. “It’s not safe to just run off like that! Some of the Pokemon of the Park can be pretty aggressive, and this area has one of the worst-tempered species of all. If you were to run across a Gyarados as it switched pools, well, let’s just say some of them get testy when they see Trainers.”

I spotted Jade not too far ahead and made to call out for her to come back, but before I could a small blue shape flew out of a pool off to the Flygon’s left. The shape turned out to be a little Manaphy, which flapped its “wings” at Jade and squirted a bit of water at her plafully. It then somersaulted and landed back in the pool, poking its little head out of the water and giggling cheerfully.

“Then again, a lot of the Pokemon here just like to pull pranks and play around,” I said, relieved that Jade hadn’t had the misfortune of running into something bad-tempered.

OCC: Yay! Just one question though, will Carvanah have HM Dive still if I use it in battle?
    ====

“Well, you did it! Congrats on your first capture in the National Park!” Sara said, patting Daniel on the back.

Daniel picked up the ball, smiling at it. He thrust his arms in the air screaming, "WHOOHOO!" like a small child who had just opened a pack of cards and gotten the one he wanted. He clipped the ball onto his belt sighing with relief.

Raiguy looked suspiciously at the ball, wondering if it was going to open back up. Once he realised it was okay, he jumped on Daniel's shoulder, patting him on the back with his tail for a job well done.

This was only the begining of the National park journey, however. He knew that he still had plenty of time before he needed to leave, plenty of Parkballs left, and even stronger Pokemon out there to catch. He was as excited as ever.

Something struck him afterwards, however. "Sara, you said Carvanah aren't normally this violent, so what do you think was bothering this one?"

"...A Gyarados? All the more reason to catch her before she happens to run into one!" Akinai attempted to make a vain attempt to get around Arunei when she noticed the tiny blue shape leap out from one of the pools and squirt a small amount of water at Jade.

The Flygon, irritated at being splased again, darted her head around to spot the culprit. As Jade spotted the Manaphy however, her expression changed from that of annoyance to astonishment. Hearing Arunei's call, she sulkily made her way back to Akinai.

"I know how much you hate water...I could call you back if that's what you really want." As Akinai pulled out the Poke Ball however Jade simply shook her head and instead floated as close to her trainer as possible.

"Fine, one more strike for you then." Akinai peered closely at the blue shape in the distance, noticing that it was half submerged and appeared to be enjoying the show. "What is that Pokemon anyways, Arunei? I don't remember seeing anything like it before."

OOC: No, you have to buy all EM (Extra Moves, which are all moves a Pokemon doesn’t get by leveling up), even if a Wild Mon uses one in the Park. Basically, having access to a Wild Mon’s entire movepool gives Rangers more flexibility.

I chuckled at Daniel’s celebrating, watching him gallivanting about. After a moment he calmed down and enquired why the Carvanha was so aggressive. I shrugged at his question, looking at the pool the fish had come out of.

“I’m not entirely sure,” I answered. “Carvanha can be vicious, but normally only when provoked. They aren’t territorial, and that one clearly doesn’t have any young or a mate to defend. I doubt there’s anything in the water to make it so angry; if that was the case, all the Pokemon in this pool would be trying to attack us. Maybe that one just has a meaner personality than most Carvanha.”

I turned from the lake in time to see the old Gyarados emerging from the water once again. It slowly made its way towards another, but then suddenly angled its body and started coming in our direction. When it reached us, the sea serpent lowered its massive head and peered at Daniel, then Raiguy. I smiled and patted the towering beast on its tri-pronged crest.

“Hello there, fella,” I greeted the Pokemon. It grumbled deep in its throat and nudged me gently as a way of saying hello. “This here is Daniel, and his Raichu, Raiguy. They’re my charges for the time being. Daniel there just caught his first Pokemon of the Park!” At this, Gyarados inched its frightening face closer to Daniel, studying the much smaller human with clouded red eyes. It then faced Raiguy once more before rearing back slowly, slapping the sandy ground with its powerful tail.

“Oh, I think Gyarados wants to see what you’ve got,” I told Daniel in a soft voice. “This is really something; Gyarados never challenges any Trainers that come to the Great Lakes. It always leaves them alone. Something about you sure got its attention…”
