@Spirit Zorua; Damage isn't determined by any sort of calculator. It's entirely up to the Ranger as determined by quality, creativeness, and a bit on MCR of the post and the entire battle too. And the way you execute an attack/what it looks like can be entirely up to you and how you describe it.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

As the Woobat flapped high above the grasses, she seemed fixed on a certain spot. No doubt, she was using her senses to hone in on the Zorua. A lot of Pokemon in the wild were especially good at that, especially with scents or sounds, since that's all they could depend on out here. They didn't have Trainers to back them up and give them commands, so they got good at what they were naturally capable of. While Ivy fully supported Trainers catching Pokemon and believed they got stronger that way, there was some primal strength to the way the wild ones fought too.

“Coyote!” the Trainer shouted. “Illusion star and launch some cluster bombs!”

Ivy wasn't sure what he was referring to, but she hoped it was some sort of attack. If he had any more devices, she was going to confiscate those too. She hoped the Zorua knew what he was talking about too. Any moment of hesitation or confusion could leave an opening for the bat to attack.

The grass rustled then, and Ivy saw the form of the fox streak out from the foliage. There were more than one. She only got a glimpse of a couple because the grasses were too high, but she guessed. One of them dashed out into the open clearing, but she couldn't tell if it was a copy or not. She guessed this was the star part of the plan.

From what it looked like, the foxes were trying to surround the bat, only Ivy used that term loosely, since the Woobat was hovering above the grasses in mid-air. That technique was used pretty often, since illusions came in handy. The only problem with them was that they weren't real, so their attacks weren't either. If a Pokemon could get over the initial shock, it was fairly easy to turn the situation around. She had seen many wild Pokemon try to fool Trainers that way.

The clone or not clone she could see started to glow a little as an energy bubbled up, and as it shot out, it looked peppered with stars. She vaguely recalled another attack that looked similar, so she guessed he was trying to fool the bat with it. They appeared in pockets of energy that wobbled in the air.

However, the attacks didn't reach the bat, and according to the words the Trainer used, she wasn't sure they were supposed to. At any rate, they did create a dangerous flight path for the Woobat.

She didn't look too worried, though. In fact, she cheered again and flapped her wings. Then, her body shimmered and she began to split. Copying the fox, she peeled off four other clones of herself. The five bats happily floated above the grass, being careful of the dark patches in the air. Then, they started to move.

In a blur, they came together and swirled around each other, streaking and dipping around themselves. Ivy lost track of who was who easily. Then, they all came together in one ball and suddenly split, each bat streaking out in a different direction. One came sailing straight toward the clone/real fox nearest them. The Ranger noticed that the Woobat clones were matching up with the foxes.

A couple of the bats hit the energy packets, and they exploded like water balloons before disappearing. When it hit a clone, the clone disappeared as well, raining down blackish energy before it fizzled away. A few made it through the sky, however, and streaked down into the grass. Ivy watched the closest one since it was the only one they could see over the foliage.

The bat came down fast, and right before her forehead would've ran smack into the fox, she pivoted and struck with her feet instead, using her momentum to put extra force into the kick. The Ranger saw the minute flinch on the Woobat's face as she connected—probably the result of the energy the fox had cloaked himself with—but the bat ignored it as she used the Zorua as a springboard in a U-turn. As soon as she hit, she was gone, gracefully soaring through the air to regroup back above the field.

That the Zorua didn't disappear told Ivy it was the real one. The rest of the bats didn't come back to hover above the grasses, which meant they likely collided with the other clones and disappeared too. She didn't hear anything in the brush, so the Zorua copies were probably gone. Most of the energy patches in the air had been dispelled, mostly destroyed by the Woobat clones, but some remained. The flier was careful not to run into them as she waited for the fox to react.

She did look a bit more tired though, as her flaps weren't so rhythmic anymore. Still, a lot of Pokemon, wild ones especially, fought even harder when they were tiring out. Coyote still had the energy packets he could probably put to use, but they wouldn't last forever.

@WinterVines; I just meant the description as a Psyshock lookalike in the actual description. But never mind.
...Wait, Woobat have feet? I thought they were just fuzzballs with wings and a face!

"Now, this thing is too clever for its own damned good. Coyote, Hyper Beam!"

Of course, Zorua and other unevolved Pokemon can't learn Hyper Beam, not even by TM. However, this Woobat most likely never went to trainer's school, and so probably doesn't know that. And Coyote is extremely proficient at making his Night Daze look and even act like something it's not.

Coyote flicked his tail. A rumbling began in the general area-he'd been practicing his auditory illusions, I saw. A pure white orb formed in front of his mouth, and energy crackled into it. It was mostly for show-Coyote could fire off Night Daze as quick as he liked-but it was necessary to completely fool the Woobat. The energy was reaching critical mass-he'd launch soon, and blast that overconfident Woobat in the face. And probably again, if once wasn't enough-another benefit of this over Hyper Beam was that it could be fired off in rapid succession. My fingers drummed a restless tattoo on the stock of my crossbow. The Woobat was almost ready to catch. She would be tricky to train, from the way she battled, but it'd be well worth it.

@Spirit Zorua; I imagine the feet are hidden inside the fuzz, and when that hair shrinks you can see them, like on Swoobat. It's gotta land sometime!

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Prometheus took stock of the situation, taking in his Pokemon and the field. The Woobat still hovered above, higher than Ivy would've been able to reach if she was standing under the bat. The pockets of dark energy floating in the air were starting to fade, the colors swirling inside them becoming less vibrant. If he was going to use them again, it would have to be soon.

“Now, this thing is too clever for its own damned good,” the Trainer said. While that was a pain now, it meant that when he eventually won the bat over and trained her, she would be a strong fighter. “Coyote, Hyper Beam!”

Ivy knew that the fox couldn't naturally learn that move at his stage in his evolution, either by family move-set or some sort of tutor method. That meant that he was probably going to disguise one of his attacks again. Ivy worried slightly at this, since he had done that technique an awful lot. The Woobat was smart—eventually it was going to catch on to that.

Coyote flicked his tail, and the Ranger felt when his energy rose. She thought the Woobat felt it too, because the bat cocked her head to the side, causing her to float diagonally for a few wing beats. He opened his mouth and used that as the energy spawning point. It flashed in a bright white light that she knew was just a ruse.

Prometheus tapped his fingers against his crossbow, perhaps getting a little restless. The projectile device reminded her of something else she worried about. Since the Woobat was decently high up, she wondered if the Zorua's attack was going to even make it up there, since it was only an illusion that looked like a Hyper Beam and not the actual attack itself. Night Daze was still a burst. How was it going to rise up?

Then, the fox unleashed his attack. Energy burst out, but it was just a trick. Ivy looked up to watch the flier. She didn't really look too worried. Instead, she made a happy cry and bobbed up and down rapidly. Suddenly, nearly-transparent screens formed in mid-air around her, placed in a half cirlce like a barrier. The light from the supposed Hyper Beam bounced off one and had no effect. The following cloud brushed up against the screen, and as soon as it touched, it turned back into the inky dark it was supposed to be.

Some of it phased through the protective barrier to brush up against the bat, but she shook it off as best she could, rising a little higher in the air to avoid what the screens were deflecting. It was good to now that the Night Daze had even reached her, but Ivy could see that Coyote wouldn't get away with that much longer. It seemed the bat was catching on to his tricks and had known it was just an illusion. Furthermore, the Daze had been slow-moving, probably due to the unnatural way it had to rise. If the Woobat hadn't set up the screens, she would've probably been able to dodge it completely.

But the bat wasn't done quite yet. She smiled again happily, seemingly undisturbed by the battle and keeping her positive spirit. An orb of yellowish-green energy formed in front of her, and slowly she floated down until she was in-between a space in the screens. Then she let loose her energy with a shrill cry.

The orb morphed into a beam of light, and as it shot toward the black fox, squares of energy in blues, purples, and pinks whirled, causing a rainbow of light to spiral down to the Zorua. In seconds it hit, knocking him backward with an oomph of air. Coyote shook it off, but he was getting worn down too, just like the bat. The Trainer would probably have to end this battle soon.

The Woobat floated back up to be surrounded by her screens. The almost-invisible barriers sparkled as the light hit them, and Ivy saw that they were strategically placed between her and the inky packets of energy that were almost faded away. With the wall between them, she didn't have to worry about flying into them.

“She's wearing down pretty fast,” Ivy said, “but she's also doing quite a bit to Coyote. I would definitely think about making a capture attempt soon. You'd probably have a good chance.”

@WinterVines; Doesn't it say in the Pokedex that Woobat cling to walls via nasal suction? WHERE WE'RE GOING, WE DON'T NEED FEET! And BTW, when calculating damage for this, I thought of it as a Dark-type Double-Edge attack, given that Coyote will be hitting the ground too. Make of that what you will. And I beg of you, please let this hit-it's far too simply beautiful(in my mind) to miss.

"Light Screen, eh? Blocks special attacks, and too far away to reach with physical...This thing's cleverer than I gave it credit for. Hmmm..." My eyes fell upon a small sapling a few feet away, and inspiration struck. The plan rapidly taking shape in my brain, I called "Coyote! Up that tree, quick!" Coyote took my words to heart, blasting straight up the trunk at high speed with Agility. "Faint Attack! NOW!" The sapling had bent alarmingly as he ran up it, and as he leapt for Faint Attack, the tree sprang back, driving him up and forward-straight at the astonished Woobat.

If all went according to plan, Coyote would hit the Woobat, smashing the both of them into the ground in a blaze of Dark energy. Coyote would be cushioned by the Woobat's fluff, and he'd only get hurt a little, while the Light Screen would have no effect on a physical assault. Yeah. If all went according to plan.

My heart was in my throat, and a thousand worries ran through my head. The Woobat had no warning of such an attack, and Coyote was coming very fast-but what if it dodged anyway? What if it hit Coyote with another Gust? What if Coyote aimed poorly? There were too many ways for this to fail. I crossed my fingers and sent a prayer up to Arceus that none of them did, and for good measure a wish to Jirachi.

@Spirit Zorua; I'm glad you switched up attacks. Some people give penalties for that. Also, did you subtract that doll money from your stats? You didn't post in an OOC like I mentioned, so I was just wondering. That should've been done ASAP if you didn't. Usually people do it in the post they're using the doll in and then subtract the money if they end up using one, or the post right after. Those things should be paid for up front.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The Trainer took a good look at what the Woobat had constructed. “Light Screen, eh?” he said. “This thing's cleverer than I gave it credit for. Hmmm...” he trailed off, thinking of what to do.

The bat cheered them on, floating happily behind her screens. If one turned just right, the glinting sun off the barriers and the fading dark patches could've almost been pom-poms, like she was a cheerleader for real. The flier was tiring out though, as her body started to dip and sink much faster than it had before. A few times she had to quickly flap her wings to gain a few inches in height. That would probably come in the Trainer's favor eventually.

Prometheus scanned the area for anything he could use, and Ivy saw as he spotted a nearby tree that grew out here among the dried grass. It was kinda thin and short, but it was the only kind that grew out here. There had been others scattered around as they waded through the foliage too.

The Trainer honed in on it and then figured out what he was going to do. “Coyote! Up that tree, quick!”

The fox scrambled off, using his claws to dig into the small tree. If it was any taller, he probably would've fell, since there wasn't much to hang on to. He managed to scurry up to the top, where the end bent over a little with his weight. Ivy wasn't sure it was going to hold for long. Thankfully, Prometheus shouted out for a Faint Attack, so the Zorua didn't stay long.

Coyote's claws glowed with energy, and after a wiggle, he sprung from the tree. The Woobat watched with interest and gave a peppy cheer as the fox jumped, like she was happy he was sailing through the air just like she did. In doing so, she had fluttered a little lower from her screen-enclosure.

This was the opening the fox needed. Ivy saw his head clip the bottom of one of the screens, but it didn't throw off his path too much. He went scratching by the bat, snagging at her blue fuzz as he swiped. It caught the Woobat and threw off her flight, jerking her down with the fox.

She smashed into him, and the Zorua's path disrupted, they went crashing to the ground, kicking up loose grasses and a cloud of dirt. Coyote came darting out of the brush into the open space, and the bat followed.

The Woobat burst out of the brush too, happily chattering, like they were playing tag and she was “it”. An orb of green wobbly energy formed in front of her, and with a twirl of her body, she spiraled up and released the force. It came nipping at Coyote's heels before it dissipated into the dirt—an Energy Ball attack.

The bat then hovered back, inching back over the tall grasses where she liked to fly. Her blue fuzz almost touched the tips of the blades now, and a few times she actually dipped low enough to brush against them, causing her to giggle and float up slightly higher. She was definitely getting tired.

“I think if you're going to capture, you should do so now, before she gets too tired. There's no use dragginig it out too long,” Ivy told him.

Oh, thank Arceus. It had worked. I hadn't been sure what would happen if Coyote missed, but he hadn't. For once, everything had gone as planned. I was half expecting a Hyper Beam from a nearby, random Hydregion, just from the karma buildup I was accruing.

Again, the Ranger had a point. If I wanted to catch the blue fuzzball, it was time. "Target, if you please?" Coyote casually flicked his tail, and an illusory set of crosshairs appeared, along with a parabolic arc and some random mathematical gibberish. "Show-off," I muttered, pulling my crossbow from its holster and loading a Park Ball. Taking careful aim, I centered the crosshairs on the crossbow with the crosshairs covering the Woobat. It didn't notice said crosshairs; Coyote had crafted them for my eyes only, and while a casual attack could disrupt them, there was very little likelihood of that happening.

Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, trigger out, TWANG! The quarrel leapt from the bow with a noise like a bored kid's plastic ruler, and the flight was up to the laws of physics now.

@Spirit Zorua; I just went ahead and showed the next encounter so there didn't have to be a post in-between with nothing going on.

    NBP#8

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The Trainer looked relieved that Coyote had hit his target. Although the fox had taken some damage in return, the attack at definitely but the Woobat in a good range for capture.

Prometheus readied his catching tool by snapping on another basic Park Ball and lining up the shot. With a pull of the trigger, the arrow flew toward the target. Ivy clenched her fists together on reflex—if the device malfunctioned and the ball didn't actually dislodge from the arrow, it would fly too fast and could really hurt the Pokemon it hit. If that happened, the use of it was going to have to stop.

Thankfully, it continued to work, and the ball flew up, arcing into the air much softer than it had before. The device touched the bottom of the bat's fuzzy blue hair, and that triggered the capture. A beam of red light appeared and surrounded the flier with energy, and then she was sucked into the ball. It fell down into the area that had been stomped down, rolling off the grasses to hit the floor.

It didn't fight much before the ball went still, and then the center lit up in red. “Well there's another one down,” Ivy said, going over to pick up and pocket the ball. “I'll hang onto this one too.”

Now that the battle was over, the Valley seemed pretty quiet. The wind rustled the dry grasses, and it was a little ominous. The hair on the back of her neck stuck up, but she ignored it, thinking it was just her imagination playing games with her. If there was real danger on the way, Haji would say something.

“Okay, let's get out of this grass before another Pokemon ambushes us. Follow me and we'll keep heading toward the small lake,” she said as she threaded into the tall foliage once again, Sheba darting eagerly ahead and Haji paced beside her.

It didn't take them long to come out on the other side of the plain, and Ivy took a second to brush off her clothes and shake out her hair. Tiny bits of grass and leaves fell off. She was glad to be out of that area—it was a little scratchy.

From here she could hear the trickling of the stream that threaded to the trees. The grass was more trimmed here, though if she stepped wrong, some of the strands could sneak over her boot and tried to trip her. The pond wasn't very far now, but they would have to go through a small portion of woods first. The bulk of the trees were on the sides of the Valley, separating the field from the caves, but they angled in on this end and blocked off the water. They would probably have to cross the river too.

With their destination in mind, Ivy motioned the group forward, but then a small mewing sound made her stop. Ahead in the field was a medium-sized rock, and from behind it she saw a creature peaking at them. It was a purple cat. As they watched, it tilted its head to the side and blinked at them curiously.

“Well, there's a Purrloin there,” Ivy pointed out. “Any interest in it?”

@WinterVines; Thanks for that. It would just have been me praising Coyote, so let's pretend I did that. And no, I'm not going for the Purrloin-I'm just using trickery.

I sighed. Purrloin were well-known kleptomaniacs as a species, and notable users of the Fake Out technique, which I hated. And they would resist Coyote's attacks, just to round it out. Behind my back, I gave Coyote a hand signal, and stepped forward. "Well, Coyote, go to it, I guess." Coyote stepped timidly out from behind me, gave the Purrloin his most hangdog look, and burst into howling sobs.

It was a little combo we'd worked up to evade battle with callous foes, and to lure in friendly ones. Coyote used his Illusion to make himself look like a Lillipup from a Team Plasma "documentary," at least in expression. Then, he exploded into Fake Tears with a hint of Roar for that siren volume. A clever ruse, if I do say so myself.

I firmly smothered my grin at his playacting, pasting an expression of concern on my face. "Oh no, what's wrong? Are you okay? I knew that other Trainer's Scyther was too much for you..."

I shot an apologetic glance at the Purrloin. "I'm sorry about this. Here, take this." I rolled a small gear I carried around with me. It was a simple worry stone, but it was shiny, and the Purrloin family love shiny. I took a few steps back, still cradling Coyote, and hoping the cat would let us through.

@Spirit Zorua; Escape roll worked this time. And you could've still said what you did after the last battle. Your posts can start from your last one—not necessarily where mine ends.

Also, you never answered me on the Doll question.

    NBP#9

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Ivy guessed the Trainer wasn't interested in the cat by his sigh. He said, “Well, Coyote, go to it, I guess.” In response, his Zorua came out and burst into tears with low howls.

The Ranger didn't think the cat was fooled by the probably-ruse of the fox, however. It didn't look too impressed—probably because it had seen them all emerge from the dry grasses before they had noticed it was there. Cats had that habit of being able to be invisible until they wanted to be seen. She and another Trainer had been stalked through the Woods by a Persian for about an hour before it revealed itself.

Prometheus kept up with the trick by coddling Coyote in an attempt to fool the cat. Eventually, he took out a shiny stone and tried to hand it to the Purrloin too. Ivy was going to have to tell him it wasn't a good idea to give them things from the outside, since this was supposed to be mostly a nature preserve. Other than runs, the Rangers and Trainers weren't even really supposed to disturb the natural habitat. Sometimes Ivy broke that rule, like if a Pokemon was injured, but she was always got reprimanded for it.

The cat wasn't watching the Trainer, however. It was looking at Sheba. The Zoroark towered over it, though not on purpose—she was just that tall for a Pokemon. Sheba got the hint and lowered to all fours so she was lower to the ground, but the cat was still having none of that. It eyed them all for a second and then slunk off in a wide circle around them, disappearing into the tall grass with a rustle.

Sheba stood back up on two legs and looked at Ivy. The Ranger shrugged. “I guess that one didn't want to stick around after all,” she said. “Let's keep going.”

She led them on across the friendlier terrain until they ducked into the trees. There wasn't as great of a variety here in the Valley, unlike the Woods. Here most of them were at least an arm's circle around, and most of the branches with foliage were up high in the canopy, leaving the bottom pretty bare other than the trunks. The ground made up for that in places where there were shrubs and fallen logs.

Eventually they came to the low part of the stream. The whole thing wasn't very deep as it wound through this end of the Valley, but here was a patch that was easier to jump across. Ivy was getting ready to make the leap when an eerie cackle filled the area. Sheba honed in a spot across the river, behind one of the tall trees.

A purple aura floated out behind the trunk, followed by a darker-shaded orb with large eyes and small incisors hanging out of a grin. It bobbed up and down with a smirk on its face. She recognized the much sought-after Pokemon.

“Well, here's another Ghost-type,” Ivy told the Trainer. “A lot of people come here looking for a Gastly. Are you interested in it?”

As soon as she asked the question, she looked at the Zorua. He was panting a little, since the two other battles he had just finished had worn on him. The Ranger wasn't sure how much longer he'd be able to fight, since Prometheus hadn't brought any other Pokemon with him. Their tips on the sign-up suggested Trainers bring at least two for this very reason.

“Keep in mind too,” she added, “that if Coyote is knocked out, your run will end immediately and I'll take you back to the outpost. I'm not sure if your Zorua can handle another long fight.”

Then she waited for the Trainer to make up his mind while she worried about his Pokemon's health.

@WinterVines; Can I just say FINALLY! Wonder what I did to the Random Number God... Anyway, I'm gonna go for the Gastly. Female, please. And I did update my stats, no worries.

Ivy was right. Coyote was not doing terribly well. Time for a little ruse... "Alright, time for a break." I held out Coyote's Ball, and he dematerialized in. I placed it in my bag, moved my hand around, and put a puzzled expression on my face. "Now, where did that Ball go...?" Under the pretense of rummaging for another mon's Ball, I quickly applied a few decorations to Coyote's Ball, making it look like a Hyper Ball.

Straightening up with the decorated Ball in hand, I grinned devilishly. "Well, gasbag, if you were hoping for an easy battle, I'm afraid you'll be sadly disappointed! Purugly, Faint Attack!" I pressed the button, releasing a hissing, spitting, extremely pissed-off Purugly already lunging, coated in the Dark energy of Faint Attack.

The ruse was actually simple-Coyote cloaked himself in an Illusion of Purugly. It relied on the fact that both Purugly and Zorua could learn Faint Attack. Admittedly, a Purugly was far weightier than Coyote, but Coyote was faster, and the Gastly would have little way to tell the difference. Gastly wouldn't use a Ghost-type attack, which would be stronger; it would be far more likely to attack with a Dark or Psychic-type attack. I hoped for the latter-Coyote would shrug it off with little effort, and make the Purugly illusion yowl in pain anyway.

@Spirit Zorua; I've just been rolling randomly for what to throw at you from your encounter list, like I normally do. I didn't expect you to want to catch the marts really. And next time you use a doll, can you please put it in an OOC purchase like in the Mart? It helps us keep track of things and prevents both us and you from forgetting.

Also, a heads-up here. You're probably going to have to step up your post length/detail/etc if you want to catch this Gastly before Coyote is knocked out. I've been a bit generous on damage because you're new and the mons were lower rank, but I can't do that here with higher ranks—this is where the difficulty increases. If Coyote is knocked out, the run ends immediately and you lose your chance to catch this one. This is why we recommend you bring two mons with you, since that's what the entry fee covers.

Some tips: Think about exactly what you want Coyote to do and describe it. This includes what motions he makes, the process, how you envision the attack to work, etc. That will give you some length to your posts, and since Gastly is a Borderline Rank, your normal 1k posts might not be enough to catch before Coyote is knocked out. Also, repeating attacks in the same way, such as using Night Daze 'disguised' as another attack three posts in a row, usually results in penalties. Try to avoid using the same attack many times in a row, or try to think of a unique and different way to use it! That will boost your creativity.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Ivy gathered that from his actions, the Trainer was interested in the ghost. She wasn't that surprised—most people sought one. She, herself, preferred her Chandelure, Candle, as her Ghost-type, though she was by far not a collector or advanced battler.

“Alright, time for a break,” Prometheus said as he recalled the Zorua to his ball. The Ranger knew that this was another trick, however, since he had only brought one partner with him. He pretended to search for another ball among his pockets for the Gastly's benefit, maybe thinking it would intimidate the ghost a little.

Then, he grinned and pulled out a ball, calling, “Purugly, Faint Attack!”

In a burst of light, Coyote emerged as a cat in purple and cream. It was relatively large around its middle, which on a Pokemon usually meant considerable bulk and strength. The illusion wasn't in perfect shape, though, as the Pokemon underneath it was tired. Ivy couldn't imagine how much energy it took to disguise himself, but she knew all of the trickery was probably draining on the Zorua too.

The cat rushed off, moving maybe a little quicker than its form was able. Ivy wasn't sure if the ghost noticed that, however. The Gastly cackled and waited next to the tree on the other bank, watching her opponent carefully. These wild Pokemon were tricksters themselves, so the Ranger doubted this would be an easy battle for either of them.

The river slowed Coyote down a little as he tried to run though it, his body beginning to glow in a dark aura. He splashed through it finally, since it wasn't really that wide, but the water might prove to be a hindrance later, as a sopping coat would slow him down. The ghost waited for him, eyes locked into the cat as it bounded toward her.

Then, she jumped, and the Ghost-type cackled again and shot upward, trying to get out of reach. She was only mildly successful, as Coyote managed to clip her. However, her motion threw off the cat a little bit, so in swiping by the ghost, the disguised Zorua brushed up against the tree. He let out a breif sound of pain but shook it off as he landed.

Then, the ghost still laughing, flew out into a more-clear area, bobbing up and down excitedly. It seemed she was pretty eager to battle. That was both good and bad. Good, because if Prometheus managed to catch her, she'd be a great battler. It was bad because it meant she had a good chance of knocking out Coyote before they could finish the battle.

The Gastly then made a hacking sound, and a gooey, purple ooze started dribbling out its mouth. With an upward thrust of her body, she spit out the gunk, making it rain down on the field. Some of it splashed onto nearby trees, and Ivy saw the faint smoke roll off of it where the attack burned the bark.

The ghost didn't stop until there was plenty of the goop flying through the air, some of it heading right in the Zorua's direction. Coyote did his best to dodge, but between being tired, having to run around obstacles, and just having so much of the attack flying around, he couldn't avoid it.

A clump of it splashed down in front of him, and he made a sound of surprise and skidded to a halt before he ran into it. That proved to be his undoing, however, as his momentary pause left him open to another glob of the attack.

The poison landed right on his back and made him cry out in a yowl, as per the illusion. That quickly morphed into a dog-like howl, and his form blurred until the fox's black fur became visible again. The attack had broken the illusion. The attack dribbled down his body as he backed up, trying to get away. Meanwhile, the Gastly snickered, clearly amused by the display. She looked to be in high spirits, but it wasn't just because her attack had landed.

Ivy saw the real danger right away. Puddles of poison sat festering all over the ground, waiting for the unfortunate fox to step in one. Prolonged exposure to the Poison-type attack could result in him becoming poisoned himself, so he was going to have to be extremely careful.

“That was a Sludge Bomb,” she warned, as they backed up to give the battlers more space. She didn't want to step in the gunk either. “Careful about those puddles—if Coyote steps in one, he could get poisoned, and then you're really on a timer.”

@WinterVines; ...Right. Main/Let's Get Dangerous - Television Tropes & Idioms

Oh, this was bad. This was very, very bad. I took a look around. On second thought, perhaps it wasn't after all. "Alright, Coyote. This thing's the Poison Gas Pokemon, isn't it?" Coyote gave me a strange look, probably wondering what the hell I was getting at. "Those Sludge Bombs. How about some environmental cleanup? Get back over here-Daze wedge, and Agility, straight across the river!"

A flash of understanding crossed Coyote's face, and he crouched low to build up Agility energy before taking a few steps back, summoned a small wall of Night Daze in front of him, and bolted headlong into the river. The Daze shield did its work, creating a V-shaped barrier just a little bit taller than the surface of the river.

The laws of physics worked in our favor, for once. The shield displaced the water, creating a small wave in front of Coyote as he pushed his way through. It went even went over the shield a little bit, washing the drizzles of toxin off Coyote's back-an unforeseen bonus. The wedge let him cut through easier, and he made it back to our side with reasonable ease. "Alright! Get a flat Daze in front of you, and make some waves!" Coyote gave a snarling yip, quickly changed the shield to a flat barrier, whipped around, and charged straight back into the water.

I hoped this would work. The shield should-ah, the infamous "should"-displace a large amount of water. This water would be shoved in front of Coyote, and directly at the opposite shore and the Gastly Coyote was aiming at. Simple physics, that. The "hope" part was that the displaced water would form a wave, effectively mimicking Surf without the capability to ride on it. The wave would wash up onto shore in front of Coyote, preferably fairly large. When it broke, it would at least dilute the poison, and at best would entirely wash it away. Coyote could ignore the flowback-a lot of the water would soak into the ground, and what didn't probably wouldn't budge so much as a Joltik.

The effect on the Gastly would be pretty big. High-school chemistry taught me that anything, including a gas, can dissolve in water, and Gastly was famously a ball of (duh) gas. If it went perfectly(which nothing ever does, but I could hope), the Gastly would be dissolved into the water and then get run over by Coyote's Daze shield. At the very least, the water would disorient it, at which point it would still get run over by Coyote's Daze shield.

This, of course, all assumed that the displaced water would form a wave. I hoped it would; if it didn't, I had just sent Coyote into a very bad situation. Arceus, if it didn't work we were probably doomed right now.

@Spirit Zorua; Careful how much of the attack you say works—it's up to the Ranger to decide outcome of moves.

    BP#14

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Prometheus looked a little worried about what was going on, and Ivy didn't blame him. Personally, she didn't know if she would've engaged a tricky ghost like this Gastly with a Pokemon so hurt. It wasn't up to her, though, so the Ranger would just have to wait for the outcome of the battle—whether he successfully caught it or not.

The Trainer was particularly worried about the poison puddles on the ground too. They were probably the most hazardous thing to Coyote's remaining health at the moment. After a few minutes of thinking, he called out, “Those Sludge Bombs. How about some environmental cleanup?”

He instructed his Pokemon to do something to the river next. Coyote ran back across to the water, carefully avoiding the patches (although he nearly ran straight through one trying to heed his Trainer's request) before splashing into the stream with a whoosh.

A wave of dark energy accompanied the fox, causing the low water to ripple a little under him. It ebbed and lapped at his belly, but not much higher than that—there just wasn't that much liquid here, since it was the low crossing point. “Alright!” his Trainer called once the Zorua was in position. “Get a flat Daze in front of you and make some waves!”

The Pokemon yipped in response, and the Gastly looked on curiously. Ivy felt the energy gather by the prickling of her skin, and with a burst of it, the water flared out on all sides of the fox. Behind, it shoved the water upstream, and to either side the water gushed over the low banks to soak into the shore. In front of him was where the attack was focused, however.

Like behind him, the water surged toward the ghost and the poisoned field. Ivy thought the idea was pretty decent, but it probably would've worked better in a place like the Lakes. The problem was that there wasn't a lot of water in the stream—not for the type of wave he described anyway.

Still, the water did work a little, hitting the bank and splashing up. The Gastly made a sound of annoyance as the water sprayed her, but it didn't look like it hit her too hard. Tiny drops of water could sting, but it wasn't anything she couldn't handle. The water did wash over the field a little, though, so some of the poison patches were washed away. Some remained, however, as there wasn't enough water to carry over into the entire space.

To make matters worse, the water Coyote had displaced upstream now came surging back once his attack wave had dissipated. The small wave didn't wash completely over the fox, but it did knock him off his feet so he stumbled, soaking his body and jarring him for a moment.

The ghost took advantage of this momentary lapse in attention. Her eyes started to glow, and then wispy orbs with gray-purple energy formed. They bobbed and weaved in the air drunkenly, and it was hard to focus on them. With a chuckle, the Gastly gave a cry and then threw the orbs in the fox's direction.

Due to the water, the Zorua hadn't been completely looking at the ghost. When his head snapped up, the strange attack had reached him. The orbs jittered a little, and then they made a spinning motion around his head. The fox tried to follow them at first, but then his eyes lost focus and he shook his head. The next step he took, he stumbled.

Uh oh. “That was a Confuse Ray,” Ivy warned the Trainer. “You're going to have to be really clear and concise with your next orders, or Coyote might mistake them for something else and accidentally hurt himself.”

The water seemed to give the Gastly another idea as well. Now that the fox was distracted by the confusion, the ghost bobbed up and down and moved side to side. A rumbling overhead followed, and dark clouds began to form above them as the light was cut off. A steady drizzle started up, pattering down onto the water and the soil.

Ivy flipped up her hood to guard from the rain, and she opened up her long vest so that Haji could lean under it. Unfortunately, Sheba couldn't fit since she was nearly as tall as Ivy, so the Zoroark had to suffer the water. She didn't grumble too much, but they would probably hear about it later.

The Rain Dance technique was strange. Ivy wasn't sure why the ghost had summoned the rain, but it couldn't be for any good reason. A lot of Electric-type attacks were associated with rain, and that would be really bad. Water helped conduct electricity. While the ghost hadn't done any outright attacking this time, Prometheus would have to be very careful how he proceeded. The Gastly was surely cooking something up.

@WinterVines; I'm sorry I've delayed so long. Blame me just starting in on junior year. Quick question before I proceed-is the rain going to dilute away the Sludge Bomb residue?

@WinterVines; I'm sorry about the delay. Tests like you wouldn't believe...Anyway, here goes!

Dammit, this was harder than I thought it would be. And what in Mew's name was the Gastly doing, summoning rain? Electricity, probably, but what could Gastly learn that used electricity...? I shook my head out of the fog. Whatever it was, I had to counter it. I flipped up my hood, revising my statement. Countering the rain for myself was easy. Countering the rain for Coyote, much less so. Zorua couldn't learn any weather inducers, and under the effects of Confuse Ray, I didn't dare give him complex instructions like 'make a Night Daze umbrella.' I'd have to content myself with a simpler plan. "Let's turn that thing's strategy back at it! Make some Night Daze mines, and sling them at the Gastly. Once they get there, start whirling them around the Gastly, fast as you can!"

Night Daze mines in themselves weren't too tricky a tactic. All Coyote had to do was use his illusion powers in a little ball, and do that a couple times. Flinging them would be even easier-roughly equal to a kid flinging snowballs. However, these "snowballs" would hurt the ghost a lot more. If Coyote managed to obey my orders to the letter through the confusion, and luck was on my side, the dancing balls of light would be close enough to Confuse Ray to mimic the effects. If Coyote messed up, well, something would get flung at the ghost, most likely a form of Night Daze. It wouldn't be perfect, but hopefully it would be enough to disorient the Gastly in any case. And hopefully Flareon would get good moves. Given the way my luck was running, the two were approximately as likely.

    BP#15

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The Trainer shook his head as the rain started to weigh his hair down, sending droplets flying. He pulled his hood up like Ivy had done, shielding himself from the rain. Now he had to figure out how to help Coyote.

The rain was starting to increase in volume, echoing loudly against the Ranger's covering. That would help clear the grounds of the poison puddles, but they likely wouldn't wash away right away. Enough liquid had to pile up so that the toxins could actually disperse.

Prometheus was going to have to be careful too, since the Zorua was confused. He had to make sure he kept things simple and clear lest Coyote muddled up the orders and ended up hurting himself. Luckily, the Trainer seemed like he had a plan in mind.

“Let's turn that thing's strategy back at it!” he called. “Make some Night Daze mines and sling them at the Gastly. Once they get there, start whirling them around the Gastly as fast as you can!”

From what Ivy could tell, it was a variation on the technique he had wanted to use against the Woobat. The Zorua seemed to recognize that too, and maybe that was something that helped him see through his confusion. Dark energy glowed around him before peeling off into smaller orbs, like rolling snow into a ball on the ground. The orbs grew and the aura around the fox shrank a little as the energy was gathered.

With a wobbled step, the fox widened his stance to gain some stability. Then, with a mental push, he flung the Night Daze orbs at the ghost, who was watching with interest. However, as soon as the fox let go of them, he seemed to lose control of them. His Trainer had wanted him to whirl them around the Gastly much like the Confuse Ray had done, but it seemed that the energy was too far away for him to manipulate in his confused state.

Fortunately, that didn't mean his attack really faltered that much. The small packets of energy pelted the ghost and caused her to call out shrilly, sounding a little ticked off. The Gastly was stunned a little at first, but she regained enough composure to move out of the way of the last couple attacks so she wasn't completely barraged. She floated higher as she shot the fox a dirty look. She wasn't going to just back down even though she had been surprised. Ivy could see it in the ghost's face.

Electricity cackled threateningly from above, a prelude to a likely incoming attack. Ivy wasn't sure which one it was, though. Gastly could learn quite a few electrical attacks, and in the rain that was steadily growing, that was a big problem. She wasn't sure when it was going to hit.

The ghost did seem to notice that her puddles of Sludge Bomb were starting to wash away, too. She concentrated for a moment, and then Ivy saw the puddles jump. Splatters of poison splashed out and arced toward Coyote, controlled with the force the Gastly had sent to her previous attack. A few flecks of it hit the Zorua, but since it was raining and he was so close to the stream, it didn't seem to do much to him. That was fortunate.

Then the ghost took further advantage of the weather. With a crooked smile, she started to breathe, and a thick, milky fog started to roll out of her mouth. Combined with the cloud cover overhead, it made the area pretty hard to see. Ivy strained her eyes, trying to keep the ghost within her sights, but after a few seconds, the heavy fog covered the field. She could barely make out the dark form of her Trainer nearby, and the ground under her feet had become mostly hidden.

“Well, that Haze is probably going to be annoying,” Ivy commented. “Watch out for those clouds up top too. I think I hear static, which means some sort of lightning strike is probably coming.”

Prometheus was going to have to be very careful. Zorua was hurt and confused, while the Gastly seemed at a pretty decent energy level still. With the thick fog obscuring the view and the threatening electricity overhead, things could get really messy really quick.

Another day, another run. Such was the life of a ranger like Aleria. The sounds of her PDA beeping loudly and obnoxiously brought Al out of her slumber. A half asleep Aleria checked the PDA, and when she discovered she was headed for Meteor Valley, she prepared well, expecting frigid temperatures and the like. And once she was prepared, she slung an empty bag around her body and mounted her Charizard. "Riza, head to the ranger outpost at Meteor Valley. Let's make my life easier, yeah?"

And through the skies they went. It didn't take too long to reach Ranger Outpost number eight, and when they did arrive, Aleria recalled Riza to her Poke Ball. The redhead stepped inside the ranger outpost, giving a casual wave to her colleague that was there for the day, and gathered her supplies. There was one good thing about Meteor Valley, and that was the nice amount of rocks around the area, including just outside of the gate. Al picked a nice one that wasn't too rough around the edges and took a seat on the cold surface. An involuntary shiver went through her body when she sat down, and she exhaled a little from the shock of it.

An idea suddenly flew through her mind.

"Flame, come on out for a second," Aleria said, releasing the black helldog from her Poke Ball. The Houndoom barked and nuzzled Aleria's leg. "Yes, yes, good morning to you too. I want you to do me a favor. Heat this rock up for me, just a little bit, okay? Not too much to where you burn my ass, but just enough to warm things up. I dunno about you, but I hate the cold." Flame the Houndoom barked again, and then she released a nice, quick steady stream of flames from her mouth at the rock, away from Aleria and far enough above the ground so that a fire wouldn't start. Warmth went through Al's body, and she smiled. "Thank you, Flame." And one last bark left the Houndoom's mouth before she was returned to her Poke Ball. Now this trainer needed to get his butt here before Al got cold again.

Dalston couldn't believe it. He was finally here. After countless battles he had finally saved up enough money to take a vacation to national park where he could capture a team of psychic pokemon. Finally the plane arrived. Houndini, his Alakazam, had teleported multiple times until they arrived at his destination, meteor valley. He smiled and rubbed his hands together.Dalston's hand played over the 3 empty pokeballs on his belt. 1 superball and 2 parkballs. He walked to outpost 8 and asked a young man at the desk where to go. The young man pointed in a direction and told him that his ranger was in that direction. As he walked in the direction he saw a large clearing of rocks. On one of those rocks a ranger was sitting. Next to her was a large black dogs with horns. He held up a pokedex. "Houndoom, the dark pokemon. The evolved form of houndour. It's eerie howl is said to cause those who here it to shudder in fear." Intresting. A dark/fire. Maybe a fire specialist? Suddenly flames erupted from the pokemon's mouth as they bathed the rock in heat. Dalston immediately expected a harsh scolding but was surprised when none came. In fact, a look of comfort appeared on the rangers face. He looked at Houndini. For some odd reason the pokemon had a weird look on his face. Was that jealousy. Suddenly, Dalston felt some force surround his body, then he sat on a rock. What the heck, he didn't want to st on the rock. He looked at Houndini and saw him smiling. Then, the he was on, started floating. "Houndini!"

Al raised an eyebrow when her eyes fell upon the boy that walked up. He'd seen Flame use Flamethrower on the rock she was sitting on, and a look of surprise was on his face. Aleria smiled. Her trainer had arrived, and he had an Alakazam with him. Her PDA beeped, and she took a moment to look at it. The details of this guy had come in an email, finally. Must've been a busy day if the details were arriving late.

And then her smile turned into a bit of a frown.

'Only one Pokemon? Well, that can't end well... There's Dark types here too,' Aleria thought, pocketing her PDA and sliding off of the rock, her gaze fixated on the Alakazam apparently named Houndini. The Alakazam made the rock start floating, and Al wondered if this Pokemon was a show off. She waved a hand dismissively. Whatever. She had a run to do. She spoke as she approached the boy. "Your name's Dalston, yeah? I'm Aleria, your ranger. I'm taking you through Meteor Valley today, so let's go."

Al didn't bother waiting for a response, instead walking over to the gate, unlocking it, and pushing it open. "This is your first run too, yeah? I'm also here to answer any questions you may have," she said, walking through the gate and closing it once Dalston had walked into the boundaries of Meteor Valley. She led the way, eventually walking into a dark cave. A sigh escaped her. These kinds of things happened a lot, it seemed. It was an automatic response to release Chandelure, who appeared in a flash of white light and led the way. Aleria followed, and she motioned for Dalston to join her. "This is Chandelier, my Chandelure. She's used to being the leader in caves. She's been doing it a lot recently, and-- oh!" Chandelier suddenly flew off towards the wall at the sound of screeching, and Aleria went to join her Pokemon, gesturing for Dalston to join her. A swarm of Woobat zoomed by them, flying out into the open air of the valley.

One Woobat remained, and it shyly hovered in front of Chandelier, who floated away from the bat, but not so far away that they couldn't see. Woobat looked a little disappointed, but it turned its gaze to Houndini the Alakazam, flying over to its fellow Psychic type. Aleria asked the question she'd grown so used to asking now. "Would you like a Woobat?"

Dalston noticed the ranger had saw him right as his rock started floating down. "Your name's Dalston, yeah? I'm Aleria, your ranger. I'm taking you through Meteor Valley today, so let's go." "yah," i responded, "lets get going." Before he had even answered, Aleria had already walked over to the gate and opened. "This is your first run too, yeah? I'm also here to answer any questions you may have," Aleria told him. They walked into the boundaries of meteor valley and almost instantly went into a dark cave. When they walked in the ranger sent out a pokemon. A floating, ghastly, chandelure appeared before him. He held up a pokedex, almost by instinct. "Chandelure, the Luring Pokémon and the evolved form of Lampent. Chandelure uses its dancing flames to hypnotize opponents." Quickly tearing his eyes off the mesmerizing flames without realizing he had been staring in the first place, "better not look at those flames." Then he noticed Aleria had been talking about something. "Uh, yeah, sure," he answered hoping she wouldn't realize he hadn't paid attention. Suddenly, aloud shrieking filled his ears. He looked and saw a flock of woobat flying through the cave. One stayed behind. The ranger turned to him, "would you like a woobat?" she questioned. "Nah, I would but i only have 3 balls and I have 3 pokemon in mind, a male ralts, a female ralts, and a solosis." He looked back at the little bat as he walked away, regretting he couldn't get it.
