[Hey, Synth, you're gonna need natures for your Jynx and Frosslass before you make your first post. I can't let you start battling/catching stuff until you do, sorry :< Just let me know in your next post and we should be fine.]

Jason made his way around the desk in his office, readying himself for the trainer that was about to arrive in the Park. His Dragonite, Shiva, watched with a soft gaze as the Ranger fidgeted. The trainer wasn't late, per se, but Jay's OCD tendencies would something drive himself crazy with anticipation... James, as was the trainer's name, was to bring several high-powered Pokemon into Enigma Ruins and test his will as a trainer in the ever-changing caverns. Something was up with the caves, lately--the program would sometimes glitch, and once in a while there would be Pokemon in the areas they did not belong.Rumor was, there was another mysterious creature there, something terrifying and impossible... but no one had ever actually gotten proof of its existence, making Jason chalk it up to some fairy tale. However, it was good to be cautious--a rampaging or overly large Pokemon may have been the cause of such rumors, and therefore he needed to proceed with care.

The doorbell jingled and in walked a young man, toting three Poke balls and a backpack full of supplies. Jay got up and stuck his hand out for a shake.

"Hello, you must be James," the Ranger greeted. "I'm Jason. This is my Dragonite, Shiva." The dragon in question tilted her head politely, a gentle smile coming to her features. "So, Enigma Ruins, eh? That's gonna be challenging, you know," Jason commented, though secretly admired this trainer for his courage. Now to test his mettle...

OOC: Jynx Careful and Froslass Calm

The day was mild and unappealing, with a low-hanging sun and few clouds in the sky. To be honest, it was nothing spectacular, but that didn't matter. It was going to be a good day, James knew. It would be the first time he'd been in the Park as a trainer in a very long time and he was itching to go and discover the place. The location for where he was to go was a simple choice. The Enigma Ruins - somewhere newly discovered that promised prospects of so many different kinds of Pokemon.

"Come on, Lassie," J said, whistling as I made my way up the grassy verge. On the other side a lone wooden cabin stood and that was to be where I'd meet my ranger and where we would being the journey. An icy chill had me shivering as the ice specter floated up beside me. Froslass seemed to always emit a chill when she was in the vicinity. Something very cool, James thought to himself, laughing at the ridiculously cheesy pun.

Just a few short moments later, the pair arrived at the cabin, and just two short raps on the solid oak door was enough to get the ranger's attention. The Ranger, Jason, answered the door. I shook his hand as we made pleasantries. I was eager to get going straight away.

"It's been over a year since I've been in the park as a trainer," I said to Jason, itching to get going.

"Well, all right then," Jay answered the trainer, taken aback a bit by his eagerness. "Let's get right to it, then, James." Shiva would normally have flown the man right into the park alone, but the dragon would possibly have to carry more. "Think you can handle two of us, Shiva?" Jay asked her. She nodded quickly, assured that her strength would allow such a feat. Being a well-muscled, seven-foot dragon did have its strong points. The Ranger looked at James and gave him a friendly smirk.

"You're not afraid of heights, are you? Shiva is the quickest way to get to the Ruins--or anywhere, for that matter," he told the trainer, unable to keep a hint of pride out of his voice for his tough dragon-lady. "Hop on, and hold on to your Poke balls!" The pair flew up, up, high into the sky, soaring on the back of the majestic dragon who took to the air with ease. It was like she didn't have two adult men on her back at all, so powerful were her wing thrusts. The wind whipped all around them, and suddenly they could see the entirety of the Park below. The sparkling waters of the Great Lakes, the towering mountains--Mt. Oktori, with its snow-capped peaks, and Mt. Deckbi, with a thick cloud of black smoke--the Abandoned Power Plant, overgrown with ivy and somewhat dulled by time, but still alive with sparking energy, the expansive fields of Meteor Valley that filled their noses with the smell of wildflowers...

And, finally, the Enigma Ruins, whose dark dens were a mystery from way up in the sky. Shiva circled expertly, riding the warm currents of air while gently descending so as not to derail her riders. She took a slight nosedive and approached the rocky ground quickly before rearing back, flapping her powerful wings a few times to slow the landing. Her muscular back legs took the shock of the landing, her large claws clicking on the rocks. The tangerine-colored dragon folded her wings finally and got on all fours, allowing for Jay to slide off with practiced ease. He helped James down and they peered into the depths of Enigma Ruins, a dark, mysterious cavern that seemed extremely promising.

"Well, alright then," Jay replied ."Let's get right to it, then, James," he added quickly. I wasn't really sure on how exactly we were going to get to the Enigma Ruins, or for that matter, where exactly it was. Rangers usually had a wealth of different options to travel to locations, including their own Pokemon, park jeeps, and a personal favourite of mine, the teleporter pad. Although, I had only ever used that once before.

"Think you can handle two of us, Shiva?" Jay asked the Dragonite as I was reflecting on some of my previous trips into the park. It took me a few seconds to realise that Jay meant us to fly ontop of the Dragonite - something, I'll admit, I had never really tried before. Two grown men flying on a dragon, I thought. Wouldn't that certainly be an odd sight.

Nevertheless, we hopped aboard the multi-scaled beast of lore, it spread its large wings, and with a powerful push against the ground, we were flung up into the air on the bulky dragon. The Dragonite climbed higher and higher at quite a tremendous speed and to be honest, I was quite surprised by how powerful and majestic this Pokemon was. Mine was pure laziness by comparison. Dragonite stopped rising gradually, before continuing the flight almost perfectly parallel to the ground. We shot past clouds and when I finally managed to look down against the gusts blowing against my face, I saw so many areas of the park. The mountains, valleys, great lakes and even some volcanoes whizzed past in a few minutes. The ground became barren as we travelled for a few more minutes and I began to wonder whether we were going in the right direction.

Suddenly, I saw little caves and hills on the grey ground below. Dragonite began to descend, meaning that we must be near to these ruins. However, as it approached the ground, and eventually landed, I didn't really see anything of note apart from the small burrows and gaps in the hills. I got off of the Dragonite and shook my legs out since they'd become stiff as I looked around. This must be the Enigma Ruins, I realised. There must be a lot here below the surface of the ground. Very interesting.

The pair of humans walked in, with Shiva at Jay's side. She chose to walk on all fours, since her immense height was a bit intimidating to humans, and allowed her long tail to swing back and forth with her lumbering steps. The cavern was dry and very inviting, with softly humming sounds coming from within and a warm atmosphere. It felt almost homey... not like the creepy caves of Meteor Valley. As they stepped further in, it became darker and darker, enough so that the humans could get used to the comfortable lighting slowly. Though, later, the darkness would probably become a bit more pronounced in certain areas. The first place they came to felt nice and warm as they entered further in. Small, young plants sprouted more commonly the further they went, and the earth beneath them flattened out a bit. The ground became thicker and thicker with leaves until they crunched beneath the trio's feet, and a few trees sprung up on the sides of them, shading them from a false light that felt very warm as they went further. Soon, the surroundings resembled a forest, with trees expanding on all sides and the size of the area indiscernable anymore. Dappled shading felt comfortable even in the artificially hot sunlight that made the emerald grasses reach for the light. Jay's Dragonite hummed quietly, her reptilian blood making the warmth feel nice on her scales.

A dark shape whooshed through the underbrush behind them, making Jay freeze and go on alert. The noise sounded again, and Jay turned to catch a Pokemon appearing just ahead of them. It came right up to them, curious. It seemed to be... bouncing, for some reason, as if filled with pent-up energy.

"Ah, I've seen these around here before. This is a Nuzleaf, as I'm sure you're aware. Care to attempt capture?" Jason asked his trainer.

We began to climb through the first cavern after a few moment's of deciding which to enter. Unsure of what I was doing and what lay ahead, I stooped down and we began to walk, Dragonite manning the rear. Inside the cave was warm and dark, but relatively quiet. After just a few moments of walking in the near-silence, the tunnel opened up to a shrouded wooded area. There was a lack of light here, so everything was a little spooky, but not intimidating by any means.

Suddenly, a figure darted by in a nearby bush. I froze before turning slowly to see a Nuzleaf standing there, looking at us in a wary manner, before it bega to hop from one foot to the other. I began to wonder why it was bouncing. WHY MAN WHY?!

"Ah, I've seen these around here before. This is a Nuzleaf, as I'm sure you're aware. Care to attempt capture?" Jason asked.

"It's an interesting Pokemon alright, but I think I'll pass up on it for now. I'll buy a Pokedoll if you don't mind. Maybe that might calm this energetic 'mon down."

Jay nods and takes the doll from James, giving it to the Nuzleaf who promptly snatches it and dashes off into the dense brush again. Nodding his head in satisfaction, Jay moves on with his trainer through the thicket, watching for nasty poisonous plants and the like. The trees thin out here and there, though they are starting to look bigger and with knobbier roots. Jay picks his way through them, attempting not to trip as he walks alongside his trainer.

"So, you're a Ranger here, too, eh? I don't see you around much. Must work in a different section of the Park," Jay comments to James. "I'm also fairly new around here. Took up the job when I saw a sign for able trainers to take on the Ranger job." The trees start to thin out even more, the dappled shade beginning to grow more scarce. Shiva grumbles a bit as the heat and warmth begin to grow uncomfortable--being native to water as a hatchling, dry scales simply didn't agree with the winged dragon. "Let me know if you want to get back in your ball, Shiva," Jay tells her, noticing her discomfort. She shakes her head, though, and Jay nods as they continue on.

They come to a clearing when Shiva suddenly looks up, grunting to her master. Jay follows her gaze and sees a bird Pokemon flying up above, its wings occasionally making the false sunlight flicker with its shadow.

It's feathers are a plain brown and its figure is a small blot against the light. It flaps its wings a few times before spotting them with its keen eyesight, wheeling around expertly before making a landing on a high branch to view them all. The Pidgey gives them a once-over with sharp, beady little eyes, then feigns disinterest as it preens its wings.

"Hm, want this one?" Jay asks James.

I tossed the pokedoll at the Nuzleaf, who plucked it up off of the ground and darted back into the dense bushes along the forest floor. We began to continue our way through the unusual forest. I noticed that a lot of the trees and roots popping out were getting thicker as we travelled further into this odd cave-dwelling forest.

"So, you're a Ranger here, too, eh? I don't see you around much. Must work in a different section of the Park," Jay said suddenly. "I'm also fairly new around here. Took up the job when I saw a sign for able trainers to take on the Ranger job."

"Yeah, I've been on leave for a while, but I'm back now for the moment at least. The work is certainly rewarding... and the girls love Rangers as we all know."

As we approached a clearing, there was a noise from the branches above. A little bird Pokemon popped out, swirled gracefully and landed on a branch. Pidgey were pretty cool but I wasn't really interested right now.

    "Hm, want this one?"

"I'll take another Poke doll please."

Jason quirked an eyebrow at James's chatter about his reasoning for becoming a Ranger--not exactly the same reasons Jay took the job, but he could somewhat understand. Jay wasn't really looking for any sort of relationship with women, being a hardcore trainer who dedicated his life to training his dragon Pokemon and forcing his body to stay fit so he could fight alongside them if the time called for it. While the Ranger specialized in relations between wild Pokemon and humans, and protected both from one another, he was also skilled in the Martial Arts and constantly practiced fighting and sparring with wild Fighting types and with his dragons. Of course, the strong beasts had to pull their punches when dealing with the weaker human, but it was still all in good fun, and made their bonds stronger as partners.

As they dealt with the wild, overly happy Nuzleaf, Jay began to watch the other trainer more closely. Subconsciously, he was sizing up the man as a trainer and fellow Ranger, wondering how he interacted with his own Pokemon. He rejected the bird that had suddenly appeared above their heads. Jay nodded as he took James's money and plucked a Pikachu doll from his pack.

Jason took James's doll that he traded $500 for and lobbed it skyward, away from the group, and the Pidgey immediately dove after it. The small but strong bird made off with the doll like prey, clutching it in its talons. It actually seemed a bit overeager to snatch up the yellow mouse. Probably for revenge against Electric-types and their notoriety in Viridian Forest among the Pidgeys who lived there... They moved through the clearing, where trees were more sparsely placed. Soon the false UV rays of the light above were beating upon their backs and making their necks sweat. Jay could feel a sunburn coming on, even with as much sunscreen as he'd applied earlier... Turning to Shiva, who had begun to pant a bit, he plucked her Poke ball from his belt.

"Return for a bit, girl. I don't want you to pass out from the heat," he said to her. She looked grateful and did so in a rush of red light. Jay shrank the ball back to its tiny size and put it back into the designated socket on his belt, walking alongside James once more in silence. He pulled his canteen out and drank from it, then, after a moment, offered it to James as well.

"Can't get dehydrated out here. Don't know if you brought any water with you, but you can have some of mine if you didn't," he told the other man. After taking a quick break in the sunlight, they went to get up, when suddenly a fluttering rush of soft wings and a huge bug face was all they could see.

"Waaaugh! Dammit, bug thing, scared the crap out of me," Jay grumbled as the large, orangey-red bug fluttered back a tiny bit. It gave the two trainers a long, measuring look, while trilling curiously. It seemed to want to discover more about the two of them. The mothlike Pokemon flitted around back of them, touching them with long, tickly feelers, before making a circle and rushing back to face them again. It never landed, but seemed to dance on the air, comfortable in the sun that felt unbearable to the two human trainers.

"Uh, so you wanna try to capture this thing?" Jay asked the other Ranger.

After hand over the five hundred pokedollars to Jay, I accepted the Pikachu doll he handed to me. The plump yellow doll felt squishy. Hopefully the Pidgey would accept the Pokedoll and let us flee, although there had been ocassions in the past where wild Pokemon did not accept Pokedolls, but those situations were few and far between thankfully. With a reasonably accurate toss, I flung the doll straight up towards the Pidgey. The bird Pokemon was flapping its wings patiently before it suddenly retreated a few feet.

"Pidge pidgey!" it cried as the ball shot past it and up above the trees. Pidgey glanced up at it for a second before shooting up towards the doll. Flying at a surprisingly fast speed with talons outretched the Pidgey snatched up the doll. After flapping its wings a few more times and glancing down at us for no more than a second, the Flying type soared off away into the distance above the tall trees, the Pokedoll firmly in its talons as it meant to bring the soft plush home. Perhaps it would present it to its wife Pidgey as a gift or use it to stuff its nest for insulation during the winter months, or maybe even as a toy on lonely nights when all the other Pidgey with friends went out to bars and clubs.

After having our encounter with the Pidgey ending, we continued onwards and out of the small clearing. We walked for a bit past many low-lying bushes and tall trees, mostly shrouded in darkness as the trees overhead provided us with cover an protection from the harsh rays of the sun. However, as we continued onwards, there seemed to be a general increase in heat and I was soon sweating. Glancing upwards I saw that the trees overhead were growing a little less thick here and shards of light pierved through the protective overgrowth. The treetops grew thinner and thinner s we progressed and I noticed that there was a change in the trees around us. Most were bright shades of brown with light green foilage set on nutritious deep brown soil. Now the trees were a darker shade of brown and the clay-like ground was hard and full of rocks, occassionally cracking a little as we passed over it.

Jay broke the soothing sounds of the woods as he summoned his Dragonite back in an attempt to remove it from the harsh solar rays above. "Return for a bit, girl. I don't want you to pass out from the heat," he said to his Pokemon. Dragonite had strong thick scales that would protect it from the majority of the sunlight, but it did certainly have weaker more vulnerable patches such as its underside so returning it to its Pokeball was a wise call. When the large Dragon type was sucked into its pokeball, Jay stowed it away and continued talking.

"Can't get dehydrated out here. Don't know if you brought any water with you, but you can have some of mine if you didn't," Jay said and I took him up on his water. We paused for a moment, sitting on a conveniantly located fallen log. It was nice and shaded and the break was much appreciated. Just before I suggested that we get going, Jay seemed a little unnerved. He was staring at the bushes ahead, staring at something I couldn't see. Then I heard it too. The distant sound of powerful wings beating could be heard, getting louder and louder. I was wondering what it was that was making these sounds when I noticed a large shape pop out of the bushes.

"Waaaugh! Dammit, bug thing, scared the crap out of me," Jay grumbled as he nearly fell off the log at the sight of the huge bug Pokemon. I looked at the huge moth, pleasantly surprised to run into another one after all this time. Its huge flame-orange wings were dotted with black marks and pounded heavily in the air as the giant Bug looked at us expectantly.
The Volcarona appeared rather curious as it cautiously advanced upon us. Two large black feelers extended and it slowly advanced. The black feelers touched my face and I tried not to move as the soft black attachments rubbed my face. I nearly burst out laughing at what was going on. It was very unusual for a Pokemon to come so close and be so trustworthy of humans. Perhaps it had never seen a human before and was very curious about what it had just encountered. The Enigma Ruins were certainly unexpecting to say the least.

The Volcarona circled us calmly, feelers moving around us. Jay was stock-still until the Volcarona retreated a little and stared at us, perhaps wondering what we were planning to do.

Seeing the large dual-typed moth floating there above us, wings beating heavily to keep it suspended above the ground, I couldn't help but remember the very first time that I had battled a Volcarona, which, oddly enough, also happened in the Naional Park. However, it did occur in a much less mysterious place than the Enigma Ruins; I found it hididng atop a large mountain that ultimately ended up being an active volcano. It was at Mount Deckbi, and that was a day much like the weather that was bearing down on us now. There was intense heat caused by a scorching hot sun directly above us in the pale blue sky. It had also happened during the middle of the summer and during a heatwave no doubt.

Then I came to the sudden but somewhat obvious conclusion that perhaps Volcarona only appeared during intense heatwaves. Although, that wasn't exactly the case this time around in the jungle. However, the sweltering heat was undeniable. The image of the other Volcarona, much older than this one, sometimes came back to me at night. It was hard to forget how it was under serious threat from the active volcano, yet it felt that it needed to stay behind in its nest to care for its newborn larvesta. We were terribly worried at the time and the frantic Volcarona would not allow us to approach it and remove it and its offspring, fearing us to be attackers who wanted to consume its young. We didn't have enough time to call for backup so I ultimately ended up having to make an executive decission there and then.

Even now I wonder whether it was the right decission. They say that hindsight is perfect vision, but years later and I still don't know what I should have done. Obviously I couldn't let them perish there but that Volcarona was proving very persistent and was endangering its offspring, more or less leaving me with no choice. I choose to battle the fierce Bug and Fire type Pokemon, with an initial plan to faint it and then grab the Larvesta and hope that help would arrive in time for the mother that was far too heavy for me or my Pokemon to be able to carry back. Although even then I knew what would realistically happen but I had to shut out those thoughts for the baby Larvestas sake. Their survival was of upmost importance and it was a motto here that no Pokemon gets left behind.

I sent out Jolteon, easily one of my strongest, most agile and obediant Pokemon. Jolteon, despite loving, carefree and a little hyper by nature had been taught the importance of maintaining a professional attitude whenever the time was required, especially when I was out being a ranger and escorting people through the Park. I knew that if any Pokemon was going to obey my commands immediately and without hesitation or a shadow of a doubt, it'd be Jolteon. With a flash of red, Jolteon popped out of its Pokeball.

"Jolteon," I called out to him. My tone was firm and commanding, indicating to the dog Pokemon that it was not the time to be silly and mess. His sharp astute ears picked up the sense of threat and danger that must have been evident in my voice. He gave me a look of understanding as I began to explain the situation to him, trying to be as clear and concise as I could with the information.

"Jolt, we need to knock out this Volcarona. This place is not safe and we must help remove its offspring immediately. It is our duty to protect them from any harm that might be here in the National Park," I said firmly. Jolteon tilted its head back a little before snapping it down on the Volcarona. The ferocious volcano-dweller moving back and forward as smoke began to pour upwards from the lava several hundred meters below. Jolteon's lips slid back as his fangs became more prominent. It growled a low threatening bark that attempted to both warn the Volcarona to the imminent danger, although it clearly did not realise that we were hear to help it and its young, and to intimidate it and attempt to force it to retreat and make it less of a problem. Of course it did not back up...

"Uh, so you wanna try capture this thing?" Jay asked, snapping me out of my flashback to that grave day. I didn't even have to think about whether I'd like to battle this monster and found myself replying immediately with a simple "yes".

The question was what would work best against it. "Hmm..." I said aloud, thinking about what could handle this Volcarona best and also remove this dreadful heat that would only help the Volcarona. "Jolteon, I choose you!" I said in a very generic fashion, tossing the Pokeball that contained one of my most cherished Pokemon. A flash of red and the yellow dog Pokemon appeared on the pile of leaves littering the ground.

"Jolt," it yapped cheerily, looking at the Volcarona expectantly. Jolteon hopped from foot to foot happily while its tongue poked out of its mouth. It looked ridiculous and restless at times, but this was no Pokemon to take lightly.

"Volcarona can make the first move. Only fair," I said aloud. Hopefully the Colcarona understood this tradition.

Jay nodded his approval at the other trainer's conviction and stepped back calmly, watching the fight with crossed arms. James looked determined and sent out a Jolteon--a powerful, fast Pokemon in its own right, certainly. The foxlike Pokemon barked acquiescence to James's word, surprising Jay mildly. James had to be an excellent trainer to command such obedience from the strong, untameable Eeveelution. The little yellow vulpine danced from foot to foot anxiously, as if it wanted to get up right away and zip into action. Jay smirked; he had never owned or used such a Pokemon, but Electric types were notoriously impatient and quick. This little three-foot ball of energy seemed no exception. The Volcarona chittered its approval as well, having seen the same thing Jay had in the trainer and his Pokemon companion, and readied itself in a battle stance.

The huge, fiery bug looked down upon James with a measuring, curious look before it make a sort of crooning noise, looking up to the sky. It began to move its body rapidly, nearly jittering as its wings flapped at an alarming rate. Jay could feel the heat of the fanning flames from where he stood, though it was a safe distance away. Volcarona was psyching itself up, moving its wings and abdomen in a rhythm that commanded attention and helped it to rev the fuel of its inner fire.

The two Pokemon faced off a bit of a distance away, still near the log that the two trainers had used to rest upon. Jolteon circled carefully, still seeming to prance impatiently on its paws, but its eyes locked on the multifaceted ones of its opponent. Volcarona also focused eagerly, its body thrumming with energy and fire. The fight had started, and Volcarona was poised and ready for the lightning-quick Jolteon's move first.

    @TheProtobabe ;

I was almost on the verge of regretting my decission when I realised what move that the Volcarona was going to use. Infact, it was so blindingly obvious from the get-go that the large moth would do this move as it was an instinctive strategy and probably its best counter to Jolteon. The moth and butterfly Pokemon used Quiver Dance for several reasons. As they were for the most part more fragile and delicate Pokemon, often prey rather than predators in their ecosystems, it provided the with a little more bulk by hardening the exterior of the mbody, often with hormones secreted from the many non-scent glands they had. Secondly, it gave them a bit more speed - something incredibly useful in the wild, whether it aids hunting down prey or escaping from predators, this attribute was another good reason for the Pokemon to use Quiver Dance. The main reson, however, was for the attack boost the move generally gave the often weaker bug Pokemon. This allowed them a fighting chance against predators that would otherwise defeat, kill and eat the in a heartbeat.

It had actually been quite some time since I'd seen the move Quiver Dance performed. Very few Pokemon were able to learn that move, and the ones that could learn it often tended to be much less available and rarer Pokemon. Volcarona was one user of this move that is very hard to obtain, available only in places of sweltering heat and usually a very fiercesome opponent, but many collectors and very tactical and competitive battler had managed to track them down and capture them (an equally challenging task, in my opinion) or purchased Larvesta eggs illegally. The buying and redistribution of eggs was under serious lockdown these days, with huge penalties and even jail-time was sometimes awarded to the persecuters of this rule.

The reason behind the laws now governing the well-being of unborn Pokemon was a very touchy subject in the modern era we reside. Many poachers harboured Pokemon like Phanphy, who, upon evolution, could provide very valuable ivory tusks when they became Donphans. Donphan, as a result of this, was driven to near-extinction, especially since the ones that had their tusks removed many a-time found themselves unable to properly defend themselves when released into the wild. There was also a lot of misuse of eggs too in the last few decades. People stowing them away to bring to foreign lands even though the unborn Pokemon that were prohibited and unregistered in the new country might harbour fatal and highly-contagious illnesses that were obtained through their mother.

I looked over at the Volcarona as it raised its head a little, tilted it upwards towards the dark canopy of leaves overhead. It paused a moment before making an intimidating sound. Its head snapped back into position after just a short while and its body moved back and forward slightly, wings beating gently as it hovered just a few meters from Jolteon. The speed of Volcarona began to pick up and soon its wings were beating at quite a quick rate, its body moving in time and rhythm to the beating of the powerful wings. Its feelers outstretched before it, receded back a little before groping at the air around the large moth Pokemon. Volcarona's eyelids slid closed as it lost itself in the performance of the Quiver Dance move. With each beat of the strong wings, a blast of heat hit against Jolteon, who grimaced a little, as he moved from side to side, trying to avoid the heat. Even though I was sitting safely on the log with the Ranger Jay, the heat was still very noticeable. The last time I had seen the move used, there was very little heat to be seen.

The last occurence was performed by an alert Venomoth at my Gym all the way back in my homeland of Unova. Icirrus, being an Ice type Gym didn't often see many Venomoth, usually Fire, Fighting and Steel types, so seeing a Venomoth was quite unexpected, and certainly a little challenging. It was clear that it wasn't an ordinary challenger too. He had a darker skin tone than all use pale-faced people who live up north and he had a foreign accent that hinted that he had come from far away. Seeing the Venomoth, I decided to go with my first instinct and use Jynx. It might be an odd decission since Venomoth was immune to any strategies I might try thanks to its Wonder Gaurd and my Jynx was even weak to Venomoth's Bug type moves. Hwever, I had a plan.

Jynx," I called out to my beloved Pokemon. "This Pokemon will be tough, undoubtedly, but I need you to trust me on this and go with a Snatch." Without question, Jynx poised herself in a fighting stance - body at an angle, feet prepped ready to dart at a moment's notice and arms outstretched, ready to startle the Venomoth and steal its move if it tried to do what I anticipated it would try and do.

"Venomoth, Quiver Dance," the other trainer roared, clearly unaware of what Snatch could do. Just as Venomoth had begun to follow its master's commands, Jynx leapt into action. Shooting across the icy ground, sliding elegantly, yet rather quickly, Jynx struck the Venomoth who had just closed its eyelids in preparation of using the move. Jynx's hands slapped Venomoth's face, knocking it out of sync and distracting it momentarily. Jynx, know aware of the move's inctricities, began to perform Venomoth's own dance while it was rendered incapable.

Retreating back into the center of the icy terrain allowed Jynx to move out of harm's way in case the Venomoth lashed out before Jynx could perform the move. Gliding gracefully backwards, Jynx closed her eyelids and began to wiggle her hips while I looked on thinking lolwut to myself. Her body began to twist and turn and the room grew a little more chilly as she performed the dance. The opposing Venomoth didn't even try and move as it seemed so entranced by Jynx using its own move against it. When Jynx had finished, her eyelids shot open and her two arms flared out dramatically. I could see by the concentrated look on her face that the move worked as Jynx looked more alert and dangerous than ever before. This was going to be slaughter-time for Jynxy...

Although, now was not the time to be reminiscing about these kind of things. Jolteon had a very intense battle to get on with and it was very obvious to me that he was dying to get going. I lookedover at the little yellow hound from the log myself and Jay were sitting on to see the little yellow hound hopping from one foot to the other, impatiently awaiting command. If you looked closely enough you could see little sparks leaping off of his fur and into the air before disappearing from sight again in the air. That wasone of the main reasons I did not like the hug Jolt, or do any kind of physical contact with him. He was constantly so over-charged with electricity that sparks just leapt off of him consistently meaning touching him results in getting little electrical shocks more often than not. Thinking of this, I couldn't help but burst out laughing and I'm sure Jay was looking at me as if I was crazy.

"Alright, Eevee, the time has come," I said to the little furry fox that was sitting on my lap. Rising from the pavement and pushing Eevee gently off of my lap, we got up. I walked confidently over to the Celadon Department store with Eevee trotting alongside me patiently. The money that I'd need in just a few moment's time was jingling away in my pocket as I quickly approached the entrance to the huge shopping complex. It soared above us and I felt a little dazed peering to look at the roof so high up above us. I shook out the nerves, took a deep breath to ready myself and pushed the door open.

Inside the placewas extremely busy. People were queing up by the counters and browsing through the wide aisles as shop clerks helped others out wh had questions and scanned the other people's items. A ceiling fan whirred overhead and the constant chitter-chatter of the hundreds of customers was a little overwhelming, but Eevee darted ahead and I felt obliged to follow. He hopped on over towards the entrance to the elevator eagerly, apparently knowing his way without having ever been inside of this building before.

I pushed the button to operate the lift and a woman who clearly worked here, evident by her apparel, and started waiting for the lift too. She had oddly-coloured torquise hair and smiled at me when she realised that I was looking at her.

"It's so busy today, right?" she said and I nodded, smiling at her. "Oh, he's so cute!" she exclaimed as Eeevee shot up towards her, brushing his body against her leg. She petted the Eevee a little bit as we continued to make small-talk. After a while she asked the question that so many people have asked before. "So, which one are you going to evolve this little fellow into?" So many people had asked this question before, but our answer was still the same. I wanted to go with whatever choice that Eeevee wanted to become, but he couldn't make his mind up yet - well, at least from what I gathered. That's why we were here today, to help Eevee choose what he would become, now that we had enough money.

"We're not really too sure yet. We've finally saved up and can afford it, so we'll see what happens," I replied. A short elevator journey, and a stroll to the counter lead us to where we'd been hoping to go for quite a long time now: the evolution stone counter.

"Hey," I said to the checkout girl. "Can we look at a Fire, Water and Thunder stone please?" I asked as she handed us the three large rocks. The rocks were all dark with a hint of the respective elements: water stone had a blue tint, the fire stone had a red hue and the thunder stone seemed to glow a little. I picked up the three stones as Eevee looked up. Before he could react, someone knocked into me and the three stones went flying. The water stone went up behind the counter, the fire stone into the middle of the centre aisle and the thunder stone straight above us... before falling down and hitting Eevee on the head. Eevee began to glow upon contact and his body changed in just such a brief spell of time, rapidly transforming to become a Jolteon. My new Jolteon seemed delighted by the transformation and beging yelping happily.

"Looks like Jolteon it is," I said, laughing a little as I reached down to rub him. As soon as my hand made contact, I yanked it back with a yelp of my own. Touching Jolteon had sent sparks right up my arm, but he seemed oblivious to this and jumped at me, licking me. Pinned to the ground I could do nothing but suffer a little shock with every lick.[/i]

"Jolteon," I called to him, smiling at the memory of what had happened just a fw short months ago. "This Volcarona is no esy enemy, but it's still no match for us. First of all, I need you to use Roar. It could be hard to pull off, but if it works, Volcarona will be far less threatening. I need you to give the most intimidating and powerful roar you can."

The idea behind the move Roar was that it would startle Volcarona and knock out some of its newfound confidence caused my the move Quiver Dance. If Volcarona became intimidated and startled by the move, it could potentially lose all the focus it had gained from Quiver Dance and have its stats reverted back to normal. It was a bit of a long shot, but I was certain that Jolteon could pull it off."

Jolteon tilted his head back like I had seen him do so many times before. A certain determined, firey look took over his features as he focused himself and attaempted to make himself as intimidating as possible. His head snapped back into position, with his eyes narrowed and face contorted in an angry, agressive way. Jolteon's spikes poked up menacingly and he bristled as sparks came off of him. I saw the little dog suck in a deep breath as he began to roar at the Volcarona in a dee, strong and powerful voice.

When the move was done, I had another goal for Jolteon to do. It was vital that we got some damage in on this Volcarona and I figured that Thunderbolt would be our best shot. It was very accurate and quite powerful coming from Jolteon and it even had a chance to paralyse Volcarona, which would be very helpful in slowing this threatening moth down, and eventually making him easier to capture and potentially unable to move. If Thunderbolt hit and did a large amount of damage, it would be an ideal situation and I hoped that there would be a good chance of it with how experienced Jolteon was, especially with this move, ahving done it so many times before in the past.

"When you're finished, smack this big uglymoth with a Thunderbolt," I shouted to Jolteon, hoping not to break his focus.

I remembered how Jolteon had performed Thunderbolt on so many of the previous encounters. He paused a moment as electricity surged through his body, waiting for the optimum instance before releasing a large sphere of electrical energy. The sphere increased in size as more energy flowed from Jolteon and joined the sphere before it reached an adequate size and shot towards the opponent, hitting them just about every time., and sometimes even paralysing them.

That's how it had worked in the past. Let's hope that's how it'd work now.

Aleria had been taking a nap when her PDA started beeping, awakening the poor girl from her slumber. Her recent runs had worn her out, and she wanted to get all the rest she could before she took on another. Unfortunately, all of the others were busy, and that was keeping her from her beauty rest. Her PDA was from the ranger outpost near the Engima Ruins, the last place she'd gone to with another trainer by the name of Damian. It was an interesting area, and Aleria liked how she got to see a variety of Pokemon while she was there. They wanted her back, so back she was going.

When she arrived, she stood a bit away from the trainer in question. He was giving commands to his Pokemon, a Jolteon, one she'd seen on her first run with Liam. The shade from the trees was keeping her cool; the false sun of the Engima Ruins certainly felt like a real one. At any rate, she didn't want to break the trainer's concentration, so she waited until he was done, using the time to read up on her new trainer. His name was James, and he had with him a Jolteon (which was kind of obvious since he'd already sent that and was using him to battle), a Froslass, and a Jynx with some rather interesting nicknames. Aleria liked this guy based on the nicknames he'd given his Pokemon; she approved of them. He was battling a Volcarona, and according to the email she'd received, he also encountered a Nuzleaf and Pidgey before Al showed up; the Volcarona was his third encounter of the twenty he'd see today in the ruins.

"Hi," Aleria said, approaching James once his Jolteon was focused on the battle. She was about to continue on when Jolteon let out a powerful Roar; it wasn't as loud as the one she'd heard from Liam's Arcanine, but it was enough to intimidate the Volcarona and cause him to perform at a lower capacity than he normally would have. "Your previous ranger had to go unexpectedly, so I'm taking over now. My name's Aleria, and I'll make sure you get through here safely from this point onward." Pocketing her PDA, she brought her attention back to the battle just in time to see a steady stream of flames head for the Jolteon. Despite the intimidation, the flames manage to scorch the poor Electric type's body, but there didn't appear to be any lasting burns, just black scorch marks on his spiky yellow body. A bolt of lightning struck the Bug and Fire type before he had a chance to move, but he shook off the electricity like it was nothing.

    @Felly ;

Just as Jolteon was about to begin his Roar attack and commence barking, I heard a noise a little off to my right. Jolteon's ears pricked at this disturbance but he knew better than to turn his gaze away from the opponent. I watched as a trainer walked through the clearing and joined us. After a brief exchange with Jay, Jay left and it became clear that this new ranger would be taking over for us.

"Hi," she said, as she walked closer to the battle. After a quick wave from me, she continued: "Your previous ranger had to go unexpectedly, so I'm taking over now. My name's Aleria, and I'll make sure you get through here safely from this point onward."

"But being safe is for nubs," I informed her, just before Jolteon let out a reasonably loud roar. There was frightened noises from above as a flock of Pidgey scattered from a nearby tree at the sound of the noise. Jolteon bared his teeth and let out the low growl for quite some time before I noticed any change in Volcarona's behaviour. But, there definitely was some change. Her body seemed to be moving at a less intense and speedy pace compared to how she was moving just a few moments previously, and as well as that, she looked a little unnerved as though something was bothering her.

I couldn't tell whether Jolteon senses these changes or not, so I left him be as he began to prepare the Thunderbolt attack. However, the Volcarona also took this moment of relief to fire an attack of its own. A blast of flames shot forward, smacking Jolteon in the face. Thankfully, the flames didn't hold and soon petered out into nothingness, leaving Jolteon with hopefully no lasting damage or burns. The Thunderbolt followed, but it didn't really seem to do much damage to the overgrown bug, unfortunately.

"Okay, Jolteon," I called out after a moments hesitation. "Now is the time to act, and whittle down this beast's health as much as we can. Fortunately, you're very experienced so I have every bit of fate in your ability to do some serious damage and hopefully inflict some status on the Volcarona."

That was all well and good, but we needed a strategy. Larvesta were Pokemon that did not evolve until they had gained a ton of life experience, if they even did evolve. That would surely mean that this Volcarona is an experienced and competent battler. Well, that much is obvious thus far anyway. Paralysis is undoubtedly paramount to crippling this Pokemon's speed and aiding in capturing it. There are a few options we could use, but I don't think that Thunder Wave would be the greatest option. Volcarona would surely be able to counter an out-right status-inflicting move like that.

I whipped out my PokeDex, flipping it open and scanned the list. My fingers hovered over Jolteon's name before clicking it. Scanning through the moves, I wasn't overly pleased, but a certain strategy came to mind. Special moves wouldn't do a whole lot of damage, so it made sense that physical moves were our best bet.

"Jolteon, let's go with a Double Edge. I need you to slam into that big ugly bug with all of your strength. It might also hurt you, but I know you can take it. Before this, however, I want you to store up small pockets of electrical energy, which should be no problem since you are overflowing with it. When you smash into the Volcarona, unleash the energy in small waves."

Double Edge was useful for two reasons: Firstly, Jolteon could do some serious damage, but secondly, and more importantly, it allowed Jolteon to get really close to Volcarona. At such a short range, the Thunder Wave should definitely paralyse the Volcarona... provided all goes to plan that is.

Al chuckled when James mentioned that being safe was for nubs. She grinned; this was going to be an interesting run. "Okay, well, just try not to get yourself killed. I want to keep my job," she said with a chuckle. Her job was kind of valuable, and if anything happened to James, it would be on her head now, and that was just unacceptable. She glanced over at the trees when she heard rustling. Several brown and cream feathered birds, Aleria recognized them to be Pidgey, flew away at the sound of Jolteon's powerful Roar.

But the Pidgey weren't the only ones bothered by that Roar.

Volcarona had been shaken up by it. He wasn't moving as quickly as he was before, and he was definitely unnerved by the loud roar. He let out a quiet chirp, rustling his orange wings. James gave new commands to his Jolteon: a Double-Edge and Thunder Wave combo. Aleria nodded approvingly; this guy had a good head on his shoulders and a good brain in that head. The Jolteon barked before moving at lightning speed towards the Fire and Bug type Pokemon. Aleria liked Jolteon for their speed; they were good in battles. and especially so in this case where they could strike and get away quickly.

As Jolteon ran, Volcarona released another Flamethrower that unfortunately missed its target. The Electric typed Eeveelution slammed into Volcarona, and the sparks that had surrounded Jolteon's body while he ran flew onto Volcarona. The fire bug let out a yelp of pain, and flames involuntarily escaped his mouth, singing his opponent's spiky yellow body. Jolteon tumbled backwards after hitting the Volcarona; Double Edge was a move that had recoil, and this was that recoil. When Jolteon straightened himself out, he shook his head, but his eyes widened when he saw the Volcarona spinning towards him. Just as Jolteon started to straighten himself out, the Volcarona leaped up into the air and started doing a series of twists, turns, and flips. This move was called Acrobatics. It was an interesting move, and it resulted in the Volcarona slamming into the Eeveelution's body. Jolteon tumbled a little again, but he recovered a tad more quickly than he had from his recoil.

The Electric Eeveelution shook his head, and he winced as the burns caused him pain. Volcarona returned to his place on the opposite side of the field, electricity coursing through his body.

    @Felly ;

I watched onwards as Jolteon charged towards the hovering moth Pokemon that eyed us uncertainly. Jolteon's small head was tucked down protectively as he shot forward at a blinding speed. He fast approached the dual typed Bug and Fire Pokemon, who attempted to slow him down: a jet of flames spewed from the Volcarona's flames, but it was a rather measley affair, missing Jolteon by a good foot or so. It appeared that the Roar attack from earlier was starting to take its toll and Volcarona was losing some of the new-found confidence, or perhaps cockiness, it gained from its Quiver Dance.

With a loud clashing sound, Jolteon slammed his slight frame into the large moth, sending it flying backwards. The sheer force of this move meant that Jolteon had to recoil a little from the blow, taking a few paces backwards as he shook himself off. Volcarona fluttered a little closer but as I watched her move, I noticed a slight twitch. I kept my eyes locked on her for several seconds until I knew for certain that our plan had worked. Without waiting more than two or three seconds, the large bug twitched again, eyes momentarily blinking as a slight jolt of electricity shot through her body. This meant that our plan had worked and that Jolteon had managed to inflict paralysis upon the Volcarona. Even though the electricity that surged out from his body and into hers was slight, it was numerous, and potentially very crippling in large doses.

A jet of hot flames blasted into Jolteon, but like the few times before, he shook them off without taking any real damage. Looking at him now, you'd never suspect he'd been hit by several powerful fire type moves. He seemed as carefree, happy and alive as ever as he bounced from one foot to the other, awaiting my command.

"Alright, Jolteon," I called out to him. "The sun here is helping the Volcarona too much, and we have just the way to remove it, don't we?" Jolteon barked in affirmation before I continued on. "Yes, yes we do," I added with a smile. "Once we have rain up, not only will Volcarona's fire type moves be severely weakened in power, but we'll also be able to fire off your most powerful attack, at full accuracy. There's no way that dumb old bug can avoid our moves!"

Jolteon's tail wagged a little as he awaited me to give the final command.

"Jolteon, it's time for Rain Dance. When we have the weather in our favour, smack that overgrown bug with a powerful Thunder attack!"

Rain Dance was a move that allowed the user to control the elements themselves and has always been an extremely useful move for holiday-goers all over the world. What trainer hasn't gone to the beach when it was raining only to have their Pokemon make it a gloriously sunny day in the near vicinity. Or, on the other hand, many kids have made their Pokemon summon storm clouds and heavy downpours to avoid having to leave their houses to visit relatives and other boring things like that.

Jolteon has used this move many times before, and I was quite confident he'd be able to pull it off successfully. It required an acute awareness of the surrouding and the air temperature. Using the electrical charges that flowed through his body, Jolteon's able to summon rain clouds and thunder clouds that are drawn by the huge electrical surge. Well, that's what I'd been told anyway. I'm not fully aware of how it works on a scientific level really...

Thinking about it now, it had actually been quite some time since I'd commanded my Pokemon to alter the weather for me in a battle. However, the last time I did do it, it turned out to be a very wise decission that ultimately helped me secure the important battle. I believe it happened a month or two ago, in one of the few Elite 4 battles - widely renowned as the mot challenging battles a trainer would ever face. And, this proved to be the case in this scenario.

The cotton ball before me hopped from side to side, all the while cackling maniacally. Whimsicott was the name of this Pokemon, and although it looked rather unimpressive or overly-threatening initially, it was undoubtedly one of the better Pokemon competitively speaking that was in my possession. Before us stood a trainer who looked at first glance to be quite young indeed: perhaps 10 or 11 years of age. Yet, he was an Elite Four member and it would be a grave mistake to take this challenge lightly by any means. He had a head of shaggy black hair with a cap resting ontop. He wore a zipped-up jacket and denim jeans. He had a belt full of many different coloured Pokeballs hanging around his waist, and from which, he drew a regular old Pokeball.

With the flick of a wrist, he released the newly-acquired Pokeball from his grasp sending it spinning through the air towards me. It stopped after a few feet and hovered mid-air for no more than a split-second. A beam of white light burst free and the shape of a Pokemon began to form. As the light faded, the image of the Pokemon became clear. Standing just a little smaller than the trainer, a human-like monkey apeared. It had flames atop its head and its large monkey tail swung around, itching for battle.

"Infernape," the Fighting and Fire type Pokemon called out as it shuffled forward freely. This wasn't looking like a good situation for me since Infernape, the Fire type, had an obvious advantage over my Whimsicott with its Fire type moves, that were not only Super Effective on my cottonball, but they also received the same type attack bonus, or STAB for short. This monkey would defnitely be hitting hard.

"Flame Charge," the trainer roared smugly.

Flame Charge was a reasonably strong Fire type move. However, I suddenly wasn't too worried anymore. Whimsicott had one sure-fire way to counter such Fire moves.

"Whims, Rain Dance that monkey!" I called out.

As the monkey charged forward, flames leaping from its paws, large clouds appeared in the sky above us. Clouds that had definitely not been there before. The darkly-coloured shapes in the sky above began to roar as thunder and lightning flashed down onto the battlefield. The monkey looked a little unnerved as drops of rain began to fall from the large grey and black clouds above. The rain that plummeted down towards us began to pick up in momentum and soon the rain changed from a few drops to a moderate drizzle, and even a heavy downpour in just a few seconds. The flames on the monkeys' outstretched arms dwindled in size and were looking rather diminished as the Infernape slammed into Whimsicott and scuttered back to its trainer on the far side.

Looking at WHimsicott, I nearly burst out laughing right then and there. On the one hand, it looked ore or less unscathed from the brush-in with the Fire type, which was exsactly what we wanted and needed to help us win in this battle. However... on the other hand, Whimsicott looked ridiculous. The rain had mashed all its previously-fluffy cotton parts into Whimsicott, making Whimsicott look a fraction of its actual size. Water poured down his face as he tried to wring some of the ongoing water from his fluffy hair. Seeing me laughing, Whimsicott gave me a glare, but it really was too funny to hold the laughter in. It looked like a drowned rat, after all.

I smiled thinking back to that much simpler time. These days, I was so much more busy with real life things that I didn't have enough time to engage in such luxury battles like I used to. And, I think that very same sentiment held true for the majority of people at this time of the year. It was mid-Autumn, or Fall as my American friends insist, and that meant that the busy life must resume once more. The hot summer days of endless freedom and spare time are once again a thing of the past and the constant foliage that lined even this very forest proved to serve as a reminder that we were in that time of year. However, I was kind of excited about the summer ending. Sure, I enjoyed the hours of pointless silly things as much as the next person, but I would be taking a big step in my life soon: University. I got accepted into my first preference of Pokemon Sciences really close to my house and I couldn't be more excited. The parties, the chicks and the Pokemon anatomy. What more could someone want?

It won't be that easy. Far from it. And you know it deep down. You won't make any friends. Who would even want to be friends with you anyway? And you're going to struggle in the classes, won't you? You don't stand a chance in a University like that.

I closed my eyes for a moment, breathing deeply. I tried to count to ten slowly in my head, but yet again the voice intrude on my thoughts.

You'll be the freak... the laughing stock. You know you only got accepted because of an error by their book-keepers. How else would you be in there.

I could feel the headache coming on and I soon began to feel light-headed. I averted my attention away from the battle and looked down at my lap. My hands fumbled around awkwardly, fidgeting for no reason. I could feel my mouth getting drier and I knew I wouldn't be able to speak soon. My fumbling hands pulled my backpack of my bad and slowly unzipped it. Reaching deep inside with my dominant right hand, I snatched up the ice-cold water battle and withdrew it from the cap. I gulped down the water as the voice pressed on.

Even your Pokemon don't like you... freak. They're forced to put up with you. You know that if they even had a say in this, they'd be long gone. You're torturing them here. Keeping them locked up and enslaved to do your bidding. You make the only things that are forced to stand you fight and hurt themselves for you and you don-

The voice was cut across by a barking, and I soon came to my senses. I saw that Jolteon had snuck right up beside me and was looking at me adamantly. Jolteon had seen me go through these phases before and he knew how to snap me out of those trances. With stern eyes locked onto mine, he barked again, reminding me that I had to ignore the voices. That was what the psychiatrist had said, after all. Jolteon brushed up against my leg and I felt a tingle in my leg as electricity leaped from his body onto mine. It wasn't enough to hurt me, but a friendly reminder. Grinning, I turned my attention back to the battlefield. Luckily for us, it remained unchanged, with the moth still floating a good few feet away from us. The Ranger didn't seem to notice that I'd zoned out for a few seconds, or if they did, they didn't seem to fussed about it. Not everyone was as alert as my Jolteon. With a new-found strength and drive, I sent the command for Jolteon to commence the strategy that we'd thought of just a few moments ago.

"No, Jolteon, this is our time. Rain Dance first and smack her with a powerful Thunder attack!" I roared.

When the words Rain Dance escaped her trainer's mouth, Aleria was ever grateful that she decided to wear a jacket today. She pulled the hood up over her red hair and adjusted it so that she could see the battle and her surroundings, but at the same time, not get soaking wet. A wet Aleria was a not-so-fun Aleria. Really. So the dark clouds loomed over the area where they battled, and soon enough, Al could feel the cool droplets of rain on the bits of her skin that were exposed. She shoved her hands into her jacket pockets to keep them from getting too wet, and ultimately, too cold. A cold Aleria meant a sick Aleria, and that was unacceptable in these times. There were runs to take and money to make. Being in a sick bed would make it harder for the ranger to make her living.

Volcarona shook his body when the droplets touched it. As a dual typed Fire and Bug Pokemon, Volcarona didn't like rain. No Fire type did. It was like her, in a sense. They both shared a dislike for rain. Unlike a lot of other Fire types, however, Volcarona could adapt to the new weather. He wasn't a pure Fire type; he had Bug in him too. This Volcarona also wasn't totally stupid either. After becoming paralyzed, he quickly realized that attacking from a distance would be the better tactic, so when his orange wings started to flutter a little faster than normal, it didn't surprise Aleria at all.

However, despite the advance warning she'd gotten about the Thunder that was about to happen, she still gave a little jump when it crashed down on the Volcarona. He looked up with blue eyes that got wider when he saw the large bolt of lightning that was about to strike him. He'd tried to move, and he did a little, but it wasn't enough for him to get out of the attack's range. Volcarona's wings started to flutter a little slower as he shook off the powerful Electric type attack, but then they started to flutter faster and faster until they were kicking up gale force winds. Aleria had to put an arm up over her face, covering her hand with the sleeve of her jacket to keep it from being too exposed to the incoming attack. This was Hurricane; it did exactly what a normal hurricane would do: kick up some gale force winds and rain before striking hard. The only difference was that this hurricane was being kicked up by a Pokemon and not the ocean waters that divided the lands of the Pokemon world.

Suffice it to say, the blades of wind had cut into Jolteon's spiky body. Hurricane, like Thunder, couldn't miss in the rain. Aleria caught a glance at the Jolteon's eyes for a moment; she couldn't see any Confusion in them, thankfully. The Electric typed Eeveelution had lucked out... for now.

    @Felly ;

I looked up to the sky to see that Jolteon's move appeared to be working. Above the tall trees and through their extending branches I saw some white shapes. The clouds slowly appeared to be moving towards the center. The clouds appeared white initially, but slowly grew grey and black as more clouds heavy with rain approached. The ground around Jolteon and Volcarona grew darker as the clouds above cast dark shadows down below. A flash of lightning illuminated the battlefield all of a sudden. In the brief spell of light, I saw the anxious look on the Volcarona'sface. It was clear that rain was something this Fire type had seen before, and certainly something that she did not appreciate. I felt a cold patch on my hand, and then on my head almost directly afterwards. The ice-cold droplets of rain fell down from the clouds then, each landing on the ground with a quiet "splash".

There was a large cracking sound from above and I saw the Volcarona nervously whip her head upwards, looking for the sight of the disturbance. Jolteon on the other hand looked very relaxed. Standing on the now-soggy grass and looking directly at the Volcarona floating up and down before him with her large beating wings. I saw my Ranger slide her hood up to block out the incoming rain, which was undoubtedly a good idea. Even though the rain here was under our control and had been my idea to summon it, it could still be to our disadvantage. I could easily catch a cold and grow sick or catch pneumonia in the next few days, which was definitely not favourable. The same applied to my Pokemon, and I knew that Jolteon wasn't looking the best now after taking several powerful Fire typed moves. I knew I'd have to summon him back into his Pokeball soon and replace him with another Pokemon just as suited to handle this Volcarona, and one that did not mind the rain or have a chance of getting sick.

Another loud crack above, but this time it was followed by a huge bolt of thunder shooting down from above. The blast of electrical energy shot down, but I think the Volcarona must have sensed that is was oncoming for she attempted to move backwards. I'm not sure whether it was the paralysis slowing her down or whether she was growing tired from the battle, or even did not see the Thunder attack as too threatening.Either way, she wasn't able or just didn't move back far enough. The bolt of thunder shot through her body before slipping down into the ground below. Volcarona let out a cry of pain as the electricity consumed her for a moment. She faltered a little, but when the electricity had passed, she was still able to keep afloat. However, I noticed that her wings were not beating as powerfully now and she didn't seem to be as high from the ground as she was before. The thunder had taken a huge deal out of her, and that combined with the previous damage and the paralysis left Volcarona in a much weaker state than she had been before.

I wasn't really expecting what came next, and I don't think even Jolteon was, despite how alert and aware of what's going on he usually is. I initally thought that the Volcarona would be too weak to make ay more powerful moves and she had sort of slipped off the radar for a second, which was a grave mistake. I looked over at the large moth and it wasnearly too late for me to be able to do anything before she attacked. Her wings began beating faster again, and she seemed to be tilting her body backwards. The wings beat faster and faster all of a sudden and I wasn't too sure what the Volcarona was planning. Perhaps she was trying to fly a little higher, or to increase her speed similar to how the agility move worked. But, it turned out that Volcarona was chanelling vicious winds and forcing them together. Her manipulation of the winds allowed her to create a large tornado-like shape of howling wind which hovered a little before her. With one final blow of her strong wings and an evil smirk, she sent the Hurricane attack flying towards Jolteon. Jolteon, despite his agility, seemed to be rooted to the spot as the blades of air sliced into him. The wind assaulted my poor Electric type for a few seconds before dispersing and becoming lost in the air.

When the winds had faded, I could see plainly that Jolteon looked a lot worse for wear. His fur was slightly burned from the fire attacks from earlier, which were soothed a little by the rain no doubt. But the Flying type move, despite Jolteon's resistance to the type, seemed to do a lot of damage and Jolteon looked quite wrecked from it all. Compared to Volcarona, he looked better, but not much better. I could also tell the Hurricane attack had dwindled a lot of Volcarona's remaining energy and she looked like she could collapse any moment. Yet, this is what I had thought before and now I knew better than to underestimate this powerful Pokemon. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Still, Jolteon couldn't take any more attacks, and I knew that I'd have to send out another Pokemon. I had brought two other Pokemon with me to the National Park. Both of which were weak to Fire moves, which meant that I was unable to switch before this point. The rain that we had now nulified the danger of those Super Effective Fire type moves, so I was quite confident both my Jynx and Froslass could handle said moves.

Jynx had the ability Dry SKin, which healed her in the rain, so she would be brilliant in this situation. But, unfortunately, Jynx was weak to Vlcarona's other typing: Bug. Those powerful boosted Bug moves would tear poor Jynx apart in no time, even with her constantly healing in the rain. Froslass on the other hand was ideal for this situation. Her Ghost typing meant she resisted those annoying Bug moves that Jynx would hate and the rain too provided her a much better chance to deal with those Fire type moves. Froslass being an Ice type, should also be able to handle the Flying type Hurricane, so Froslass was really our best bet.

"Jolteon," I called out. He turned his head at my call. "It's time I return you to your Pokeball. Use your Volt Switch to come back to me!" I commanded. Volt Switch was an Electric type move, the Electric type equivalent of the popular U-turn move. It allowed Jolteon to send a blast of electrical energy forth, with the blast from the energy returning his back into his Pokeball. It was a very useful move undoubtedly.

I saw Jolteon prepare himself, readying to send the blast of electricity at the Volcarona. I placed Jolteon's Pokeball in my right hand, readying myself for the moment he'd be sucked back in. At the same time, I withdrew Froslass' Pokeball and placed it in my hand. As Jolteon used the move, I tossed Froslass' Pokeball into the air. It shot forward, spinning around, until pausing and releasing my dual typed Ice/Ghost Pokemon. The silhouette appeared instantly as Jolteon was summoned back into his Pokeball. My Ice type hovered forward a little, scanning the area. She looked at the weakened Fire type and then noticed the falling rain. Her face broke into a wicked cackle and she gave me a broad grin.

"Froslass," I called out. "See that big moth Pokemon before us? That's a Volcarona." I informed her. "And that, naturally, will be your opponent. As you can see, she's a lot weaker now than she had been previously, so I only need you to use one move against it," I decided. Jolteon's Volt Switch damaged Volcarona a small amount, which meant that Froslass should be able to use one move to knock this Volcarona into a low enough range for a capture. "Froslass, I need you to use Water Pulse!" The Rain would undoubtedly boost the power of this otherwise weak Water type move, but I was certain that it definitely wouldn't knock out the Volcarona because she had boosted special defense and natural special bulk. I hoped this move would leave Volcarona at about 10% health, but it was hard to be sure. "Uh, Frolass," I added. "Make it a not too powerful Water Pulse attack. We really don't want to do too much damage to this Volcarona!"

After saying that, I pulled out a third capturing device. This one, unlike the other two, did not contain any Pokemon. And this one happened to be a Hyper Ball. I watched as Froslass began to spit out the weak blasts of Water from her mouth, and before waiting any longer, I tossed the empty Hyper Ball at the Volcarona. I felt like now was definitely the right time to attempt a capture, and I figured after wearing down Volcarona for so much and paralysing her, we'd have quite a strong chance to capture her. It was always hard to know whether it would be a successful capture or not though. It depended on how willing the Pokemon was to enter the capsule, and their resistance to capture often prevented certain Pokemon ever being captured. This applied mainly to Legendary Pokemon, however.

((I forgot your rain counter, but you're on RAIN-2 as of this post. Not that it matters 'cause you caught the Pokemon anyways, but in case you cared. Also, as a note to myself, I need to post this in my log 'cause PWN's being a twat right now.))

Aleria could see that this battle was taking its toll on the battlers. Volcarona was getting tired, and the Jolteon's burns would start to bother him soon if they weren't already. Sure, the rain was soothing them, but they could only be soothed for so long before they'd need to be healed. At least she was fine. Her jacket was keeping the rain off of her, for the most part. Although Rain Dance was a particularly useful move, it was one she wasn't very fond of because of how it made things so wet. And it hindered her Fire types. Still, if she needed to intervene, her Dragonite and Glaceon would be fine in these conditions, but she doubted intervention would be necessary. James wasn't stupid enough to cause too much harm.

Speaking of James, the trainer could see that his Jolteon needed to be swapped out. Even though Volcarona's Fire type attacks were weakened by the rain, it was still a dangerous Pokemon. Hurricane had proved that fact well. It was time for a Volt Switch. Al watched as the Jolteon charged up energy and released it before being absorbed into a flash of red light. This first attack clipped the wings of the Fire and Bug type Pokemon, but his body quivered when he hit the ground to avoid the attack. The paralysis was bothering him even more in the rain. Volcarona was back up by the time a new Pokemon, one Aleria recognized as Froslass, appeared in a flash of white light; in the time that Volcarona had gotten up, he performed a little dance, one that would raise his stats more and hopefully give him more of a fighting chance against James and his team of Pokemon.

However, despite the Quiver Dance the dual typed Pokemon had just performed, it wasn't enough to keep Froslass' Water Pulse from hitting. It was a weakened Water Pulse, just so that it wouldn't make the Volcarona faint, but it hit hard because of the rain. And then Aleria saw the ball fly and hit Volcarona. The fire bug was absorbed in the ball, and Aleria watched it. One shake... two shakes... three shakes... Click! Aleria smiled as she approached the Hyper Ball James had used and picked it up.

"Nice work," she said as she put the ball in her bag. "Did you want to take a little bit of a break first or did you want to keep going?"

After the pulses of Water had hit Volcarona a few times, she was sucked up into the Hyper Ball. The ball seemed to be suspended in mid-air for a few seconds before it fell onto the wet grass below. The rain was still falling now as the ball nudged around slightly on the grass. It rolled once... twice... three times. And froze. With a loud ping, the ball glowed a shade of red and then returned to its original colour. I was glad that the capture had been successful and I saw Aleria takeup the Hyper Ball. She'd hang onto it until the run ended.

"Nice work," she said as she put the ball in her bag. "Did you want to take a little bit of a break first or did you want to keep going?"

"Hmm," I mused aloud. "Let's keep going, see what else we can find. And let's try leave this rain behind."
