Individual Run: Synthesis (Enigma Ruins)

NBP #1

James wanted to go on, and Aleria nodded a little more enthusiastically than she'd intended to. The thought of getting away from this rain excited her, and there was a little pep in her step as they walked. With each step they took, the environment faded away behind them and changed into something new. Aleria paused as the new environment swirled around them.

When it formed into one solid piece, Aleria went to take her hood off, but as soon as she felt the first drops of rain on her hands, they fell right back to her sides. "So much for getting away from the rain." Al looked around; there had to be a Pokemon here somewhere. A splash from behind her made Aleria spin around. A blue jellyfish with big red eyes and a pair of black tentacles was floating in the water near them. "A Tentacool. You want it?"

The rain continued to fall as we moved onto the next area. The squiding sounds of the wet grass underneat our feet had stopped, but the rain really did not. It had died down a little as we enterred the next clearing. I glanced around the area for a few seconds, scouting for any new Pokemon that we could battle. I was a little disappointed to not see anything, until Aleria directed my attention to the Pokemon I'd missed earlier. In a puddle sat a small blue Tentacool who looked up at us with big eyes.

"A Tentacool. You want it?"

I had to consider for a moment before coming up with an answer.

"Nah, let's keep moving. Let's try and run away from it. If we can't escape, I can buy a Pokedoll with my 11,750 leaving me with 11,250."

NBP #2

Aleria nodded, and she turned around as a bridge materialized next to her. Said bridge connected the island they were on to the adjacent one, which was a little ways away. She started to walk as the Tentacool looked at them curiously. "Ah!" she shouted as water collided with the wooden bridge she'd started to walk on. A glance back at the Tentacool showed that it clearly wanted to fight. So much for walking away from the jellyfish without a fight.

"I'll take that 500 for the doll," she said, holding out her hand for the money. When James deposited the five hundred Poke Dollars into her waiting hand, she quickly shoved it into a pocket of her bag so that it wouldn't get too wet. Wet money was bad; she had personal experience with that. She grabbed the first plush doll she felt and pulled it out of her bag. It was a Magikarp. Al shrugged. It would keep the Tentacool occupied. Turning around, she threw it to the Tentacool, who caught it with one of its black tentacles, and dove back under the water, taking the plush red fish with it. "Right, let's carry on then."

And carry on they did. They walked along the bridge, and she scanned the area in search for a new Pokemon. A cool breeze drifted through the area as a blue Pokemon flew by the trainer and ranger. Aleria shivered, folding her arms over her chest and rubbing her arms in a poor attempt to warm herself. She would be happy when they got to a warmer area. Anywhere was better than here in this stupid rain that was making her cold. The blue Pokemon responsible for Aleria's sudden shivering came to a stop in front of Aleria and James, blocking their path to the next island. Al frowned, speaking with a bit of annoyance in her voice. "It's a Mantyke. Do you want it? I won't mind waiting if you want to catch it, even if I do sound really annoyed."

It turned out that the Tentacool did in fact want to tango and would not let us get away so easily. Realising it wanted to battle, I handed the money over to the ranger as she pulled a Magikarp Pokedoll from her bag. She flung the helpless fish over the bridge railings and into the thrashing tentacles of the Magikarp doll. The tentales wrapped around the doll and I watched as the Tentacool sunk back down beneath the clear water once more.

We continued walking for a few more seconds before a blue shape whizzed by my face.

"It's a Mantyke. Do you want it? I won't mind waiting if you want to catch it, even if I do sound really annoyed."

"Nah, I think I'll skip it. I can pay another 500 if we need it to escape, bringing me down to 10,750."

NBP #3

The urge to let out a sigh of relief was strong. Very strong. Either James had picked up on her sentiments that this rain was really annoying or he really didn't want a Mantyke. If it was the former, Aleria would feel kinda bad, but the latter would make Aleria really grateful and really happy. Still, she wasn't going to ask. James had his reasons for ditching the Water and Flying type Pokemon, and they were his reasons alone.

The Mantyke moved his beady black eyes from the pair to a spot behind them. Aleria turned around to see another Mantyke bobbing in the air, trying to get the path blocker Mantyke's attention. It clearly worked because path blocker Mantyke flew over their heads and to its friend. Aleria shrugged. It was distracted. Now was their chance to move, so they did. She continued to walk, and their surroundings started to change again. The bridge led them to a rocky territory with the most amazing thing ever: sun. The rays hit Aleria's face, and as soon as she felt them, she took her hood off. A smile formed on her face. She couldn't remember the last time she'd felt so happy to be exposed to sunlight. She'd only been here for a minute at the most, and Al could already feel her body warming up. It was like the sun was evaporating all of that water that had been absorbed by her jacket.

"Dwebble," a small orange crab wearing a brown shell on its back said. Aleria jumped at the sound and looked to her feet. She'd been so absorbed in her thoughts that she hadn't noticed the little guy approach them.

"Oh! Didn't see you there, lil guy. Sorry about that," she apologized. She brought her attention to James next. "You want this Dwebble here?"

We managed to get past the little Mantyke that seemed to leave the falling rain around us. He blocked the way for a bit but we were luckily able to skirt around it and continue across the wooden bridge. When we reached the opposite side, the ground was a lot rockier and it was clear that this was a more mountainous terrain. Furthermore, the annoying rain from before had subsided and the sun was now shining moderately above. This was a good thing though since I was starting to get cold!

A little hermit shape drew my attention. Just like the Tentacool, I had missed this Pokemon before.

"You want this Dwebble here?"

"Dwebble is pretty cool," I admitted. "Let's keep looking though. If we can't escape, I can pay 500. I have 11,250 now."

 

NBP #4

Aleria was a little disappointed when James said that he didn't want the Dwebble. If they moved on, there was a chance the environment would change on them. Al hoped it didn't, and if it did, she hoped it would change into something warm. Her clothes were a little drier than they were before, but not enough for her liking. Then again, anywhere not rainy would be fine with Aleria. Really, it would be. The less rain, the better. Worst type of weather ever.

A distant roaring made Dwebble jump up and flee. Aleria looked around, curious as to where the roaring had come from. It didn't sound too far away, but whatever it was, it wasn't something visible. She shrugged. Part of her wanted to investigate the roaring. Was someone hurting something here in the park or was there just something being territorial? Al was curious. She didn't think anyone else was here, but then again, she'd come on to take over for another ranger. Who knew who or what else was here in the ruins? Still, she couldn't abandon James to go investigate. It was her job to make sure he didn't get too seriously hurt or damage park property; it would be on her head otherwise. "Do you want to go see what's roaring over there or do you wanna go elsewhere?"

Just after saying that I wasn't very interested in the cute little Bug type, I heard a huge ground-shaking roar. I quickly scanned the area for the source of the sound instinctively. I looked through the nearby foilage, bushes and larger trees to find the source of this commotion, but it was to no use. It was obvious from the way the trees shook that there was a large Pokemon nearby that was endangered or angry. This was most definitely not a good thing in my books. If the poor Pokemon was endangered, it'd be of paramount importance that we find it and help it out as best as we could. If, on the other hand, it was actually a big brute of a Pokemon scaring and intimidating other Pokemon, we'd have to do our best to stop it. In the Enigma Ruins, any Pokemon could be around, so it would not surprise me to see a fierce Tyranitar or Aggron picking on a weaker Pokemon.

I saw the little Dwebble leap at the sound of the roar. Shaking a little, perhaps in fear, it scuttled off away from us and into the undergrowth. I watched the adorable little hermit as it fled, and I knew that we had to find what was making this noise and do something about it.

"Do you want to go see what's roaring over there or do you wanna go elsewhere?"

"We should go investigate it," I said, nodding all the while. "Hopefully it won't be something that wants to eat us though."

It had actually been quite some time since I had heard a Pokemon let out a roar as loud and as powerful as that one there. Thinking back to the last Roar attack I had heard from Jolteon's battle against the Volcarona, my little electric hound sure had a lot to learn from this potentially collosal Pokemon. Jolteon's roar had disrupted the Volcarona a bit, putting the large moth out of her comfort zone a little and possibly preventing her from setting up with any more Quiver Dances, but that was it. My initial plan with having Jolteon roar was for it to intimidate the Volcarona to the extent that Volcarona would lose her much more calm sense of being and her alertness that she had gained from the very useful Quiver Dance move. If that had worked, Jolteon would have been hitting Vocarona a lot harder and Volcarona wouldn't have been doing anywhere near as much damage. Still, that was done and dusted, and in the past. We had nothing to complain about now since we had captured the Volcarona successfully and were soon to face a Pokemon that could be just as threatening.

However, it may be best for us to attempt to flee, especially if it is an enraged Pokemon that is hell bent on destroying things and anyone in its path. As Rangers we'd do our best to stop the beast, or slow it down, but who knows how successful we'd be at that.

 

NBP #5

Al laughed as she led the way towards the source of the roar. "Me too. I'd enjoy not being eaten for lunch... or dinner. Whatever time it is." How much time had passed since they'd entered the park? She didn't know. They'd probably never know. For all they knew, a whole day had passed. Al hoped that wasn't the case, but what happens happens.

She came to a stop at the end of a path that led to a circular clearing; on the opposite side was where the path had started back up. Aleria would have continued on had there not been a blue Pokemon with bladed arms and a red and yellow belly blocking their path. The Garchomp roared again. Maybe it had sensed their presence and was being territorial. It was clearly glaring at them with discontempt. Hopefully it wouldn't be too harmful to herself and James or their surroundings. "Garchomp," she noted, snapping herself out of her thoughts. "You interested?"

"Me too. I'd enjoy not being eaten for lunch... or dinner. Whatever time it is," Aleria said as we walked towards the noise source.

"Yeah, lol man."

We continued walking for a few minutes until we came to a circular clearing. A giant Dragon type Pokemon looked down at us and roared. It was a very strong Pokemon known as Garchomp. It seemed to be deliberately blocking the path and looked quite reluctant to leave.

"You interested?"

"Nah, let's try and get past him. I can buy a Pokedoll if needed. I have 20,750 right now."

 

NBP #6

Al's thoughts had shifted to when James said "lol" just now, and she was suddenly grateful for her knowledge of these fancy internet terms people used nowadays. A growl from the Garchomp brought her back to reality. There were more pressing matters. There was a Garchomp here, and it was a stubborn one too since it wouldn't move. She found herself hoping that something would come along and distract it or that it would move on its own. James was willing to pay for a Poke Doll, but if he didn't have to, that would be great.

Aleria's hopes came true. Apparently, the Garchomp wasn't nearly as stubborn as she thought it was because it yawned and moved off under some palm trees to rest. It roared itself to sleep, much to Aleria's pleasure. With the path no longer blocked off, they continued onward. As they did, the environment changed again, and this time, it was dark, and that was just unacceptable. Al took a Poke Ball out of her bag and tossed it casually into the air. A white light appeared, eventually forming into a chandelier that gave off purple flames. "Hey, Chandelier. It's a little too dark in here for us to move, so you wanna lead the way so we can see?"

"Chandelure~" the Fire and Ghost type replied, happy to be out of her Poke Ball. The floating chandelier led the way through the dark place, and the crackling electricity sort of gave off the vibe that they were in a power plant of sorts.

"Klang!" a Pokemon called out. Chandelier turned, and her flames reflected off a pair of gears, one smaller than the other.

"The Steel type Klang," Aleria commented. "You want it?"

It turned out that the Garchomp didn't even want to fight after all that fuss. I sniggered a little as it yawned and moved sluggishly out of the way and collapsed into a pile of leaves nearby.

"Yolo," I informed the Ranger. I knew she'd be able to relate.

Suddenly, everything went black around us. We were consumed by darkness for just a few brief moments before Al summoned her Pokemon to help us out.

"Hey, Chandelier. It's a little too dark in here for us to move, so you wanna lead the way so we can see?" she asked as a flame appeared. I recognised the Chandelier-like Pokemon as I had one of my own and it was pretty cool after all. As I adjusted to the light, I noticed a little Steel type whirring beside us.

"The Steel type Klang," Aleria commented. "You want it?"

"I hate to have to run away from everything, but oh well. Must be afraid of commitments or something. I have 30,750 if I need to buy a PokeDoll though."

 

NBP #7

She nodded when he said he didn't want the Klang, ignoring his yolo comment; stupidest term on the face of the Pokemon world, and he had to use it. He really did have commitment issues. This was the fifth Pokemon he'd run from in a row. Al hoped that he'd find something he wanted to catch soon. There had to be something here in these ruins that he wanted, besides that Volcarona. Still, he was running from this Klang, and if he didn't want it, they'd have to move on. Aleria edged forward with Chandelier leading the way, but the Klang moved to block their path, its gears spinning rapidly.

"Looks like we're gonna need a doll," Aleria said, holding her hand out for the money. Once the money was deposited into her hand, she put it into her bag and pulled out a Pikachu plush. Fitting for the environment they were in. Maybe Klang would find a playmate in the Pikachu doll. She grunted as she tossed the doll as far as she could, the Klang chased after it. Chandelier led the way, quickly grasping onto the fact that they needed to move on now. They walked on, and once again, the environment changed. Browns and greens swirled around them, and they formed into trees that rose all the way up to the sky. It didn't take long for a Pokemon to appear before them.

A small, grey Pokemon was before them, and it was sticking its tongue out. Aleria returned her Chandelure, smiling at her as she was absorbed by a red light. "You want this Shelmet?"

I looked at the Klang as it began to shift its gears menacingly. It appeared as though this fundamental Pokemon did not want us to get passed him. But, it was no worries. I was getting used to fleeing from such creatures lately.

"Looks like we're gonna need a doll," Aleria said, holding her hand out for the money. After the transaction, she tossed a yellow Pikachu doll at the Klang, which smacked him straight in the nose. The environment began to change suddenly, and we were surrounded by green and brown leaves. I began to walk before I saw a little pink figure sticking out of a grey suit.

"Aw. Let's try and move on. I have 32,500 swag if we need to buy more Pokedolls."

 

NBP #8

Aleria shrugged. Another Pokemon, another run. That was six in a row. Surely there was something here in the park besides Volcarona that he wanted. Al was tempted to ask, but she kept her mouth shut. Instead, she watched the Shelmet before her. It stuck a pink tongue out at them before scampering off into the woods. "Well, that was easy enough."

They continued on now that the Shelmet was no longer blocking their path until they came across another clearing. The woods hadn't cleared out yet, so that was something. There was clearly some stuff here that maybe James would want to catch. Hopefully. A howling grey and black furred Pokemon appeared before them. When it saw the ranger and trainer pair, it barked and got into an offensive stance. They'd crossed into Poochyena territory. "You want a Poochyena?"

The quirky Shelmet poked out its tongue at us mockingly before bouncing away slowly. I watched the little bug type hop away frantically as if it were afraid that we'd want to actually battle it. Of course, that wasn't the case at all. Why battle something in the park when you can run away from them all.

And sure enough, we had soon encountered another Pokemon. It was a growling grey mutt that had adopted a fighting stance. I didn't really have an interest in this Pokemon, so I thought that we may as well try and flee from it. What's the harm, right?

"I believe this makes seven in a row. WE'LL FIND SOMETHING... maybe. I have 30,250 if we need it to flee."

 

NBP #9

Seven. Seven in a row. Maybe this would be the lucky number. Maybe the next thing they encountered would be something James would want to catch. Hopefully. Aleria would just have to wait and see. For now, there was a more pressing matter. The Poochyena before them. It barked again, but a distant rustling made Poochyena run towards it. Aleria was grateful for the distraction because it meant they could carry on with their adventure... albeit, a somewhat boring adventure.

Chirping made Aleria stop after a few minutes of walking. She looked around, and on a nearby tree was a Nincada. The Bug type Pokemon was actually pretty interesting in the fact that you got not just one, but two Pokemon! It was one Aleria kind of wanted to add to her collection. "Maybe Nincada's the lucky one that gets to be caught?"

Poochyena bared its fangs and began to bark. However, there was a rustling in the bushes behind it, and with a quick glance in that direction, it bounded off and away from us. It was a bit of a sigh of relief to be honest. We continued to walk for a couple of minutes and I was really starting to regret overlooking the Dwebble earlier. Apart from Volcarona, nothing had been really that good or of that much interest to me.

There was a chirping coming from above. I looked up to se a little Nincada peering down at us. I thought about it for a moment, but then surprise surprise decided it'd not be something I'd ever use.

"Maybe Nincada's the lucky one that gets to be caught?"

"Hahahaha. Nope. Let's keep searching! Still have 30,250 if I need it to flee!"

 

NBP #10

Aleria shook her head. It was of no surprise to her that James wanted to run from this Nincada as well. No surprise at all. The Nincada chirped again and crawled down the tree. It stood in front of James and chirped again, pointing to a red and white capsule. "Looks like it wants to battle," Aleria commented. "I'll take the money."

With the transaction complete, she put the money in her bag and took out a Shedinja plush. This was one Nincada could relate to. Aleria got the Nincada's attention by chirping, and then she threw the plush into the tree Nincada originated from. The chirping Pokemon followed the plush, and Aleria used the time they had to walk on.

The woods led into a garden of sorts, with flowers and Pokemon shaped shrubbery. It was nice. Aleria wondered what they would find here, and also whether or not James would even want it. They came across a Minccino picking flowers, maybe for a fellow member of its species or another Pokemon here in the garden. It hadn't noticed them just yet, but it was there. "You want a Minccino?"

Nincada hopped down from the tree and landed softly on a pile of leaves a few feet away from us. Much like how the Dwebble earlier moved, the Nincada scuttled over to me. It began to make chirping noises while looking up at me expectantly. It raised on of its foreclaws and pointed at my belt full of Pokeballs. I was actually quite surprised that such a young Pokemon who had probably never been in contact with humans before was aware of what Pokeballs were and what to use with them. I almost considered changing my mind and wanted to battle this Nincada for that. If we had captured it, it could be a very useful party trick. I'm sure it'd reel in all of the ladies...

"Looks like it wants to battle," Aleria commented. "I'll take the money."

I handed Aleria the moolah as we had arranged and she pulled out a Pokedoll. This one was of a Shedninja and I'm sure the little Nincada would be interested by it. Aleria began chirping to get the Nincada's attention, so I took the opportunity to laugh out loud (or lol as us savvy people say). The Nincada accepted the offering and bid us on our way so we continued along the roughly-sewn path on the ground. We followed said path for a few minutes before we came up to a small little garden that seemed to be in immaculate condition. A plain white fence seperated us from the garden, but there was a little gate that had been left slightly ajar. Pushing it open, we advanced into the garden and I got a better look of the place.

The grass was trimmed very short and seemed to be very even throughout. Bunches of multi-coloured flowers had sprouted from several loamy patches of soil that were located in the garden. The garden must be maintained an awful lot to keep it in such a condition, but who even comes out this far into the middle of nowhere to do such a thing? Aleria stopped suddenly and pointed at something up ahead. Wordlessly, we advanced towards the little white rodent that was stooped over some flowers. It appeared to be a little Mincinno picking flowers.

"You want a Minccino?" Aleria whispered as we crept closer to hit, hoping not to disturb it.

"Hell yeah. I thought Nincada had a cool little trick, but a cute furry thing that can pick flowers will surely get me all of the ladies!" I exclaimed. I pondered for a moment before I could decide what Pokemon I was going to send. I had used both Jolteon and Jynx thus far, so I figured it would be Jynx's turn to shine. Jynx had seen much light in battles as of late so I was determined to have her prove her worth right now. Besides, Jynx was a total babe too.

"Okay, Jynx, come on out!" I said in the most generic and cheesy manner as I flung her Pokeball. The Mincinno seemed a little startled to see us so close, but probably even more startled to see it faced with a Pokemon battle out of nowhere. All it wanted to do was pick some flowers after all! Jynx smoothed out her weave as she eyed up the opponent. She turned back towards me and winked seductively, making a "duck face" in the meantime. Ah, yes, the all too familiar duck face that annoyed me so much. That was the main reason I stopped letting Jynx use my camera. She was so vain and loved to take hundreds upon hundreds of pictures of herself with different hairstyles and facial expressions. Her favourites so far were #no filter, the duck face, and the "im ugly" pictures that she frequenty makes and uploads to her popular Facebook account.

"Now, Jynx. No time to worry about looking glamorous!" I shouted to her, reminding her that this was going to be a serious battle. "You can pick flowers afterwards if we successfully capture this Mincinno!" Jynx seemed to like that as her face burst into a broad grin. "Let's start this battle off with a Fake Out attack! That should leave the Mincinno startled and unable to move, giving you ample time and opportunity to hit him with a Psychic attack!"

I hoped that plan would be a good enough plan. Fake Out was quite a weak powered move but it was undoubtedly very useful. When used on the first turn of a battle it always made the opponent flinch, letting your Pokemon get in "free damage" essentially. That being said, it wouldn't work if the opponent had the Inner Focus ability, which Mincinno did not have. Then again, some weird things have happened in the Park and I wouldn't even be surprised if the Mincinno didn't even flinch. Different rules governed the Pokemon of the Park and they battled how they pleased. A lot of the differences that occured between Pokemon not from the National Park and Pokemon that live here naturally is genetic mutations. Like in all species, different mutations are to be suspected and they give rise to evolution, better survival skills and a Pokemon's adaptability to its surroundings. One such genetic alteration could be found in this Mincinno that made it more resistant to flinching, to help it better cope against Pokemon that relied on flinching and intimidation tactics. In this here case, that would be an undeniable advantage.
