    Ranger Chainy

    ~~~~~
    I ran along the path leading up to the Botanical Gardens entry gate. I was running a little late - my breakfast at the food court had taken longer than usual, which was strange considering it was just a vegetarian roll. I shrugged and moved a bit faster - no doubt the Trainer was already waiting for me.
    As I got closer I could see my suspicions were right. A guy was waiting outside the gate. I barreled straight past him and shoulder-slammed the gate, opening it by accident. I fell onto the ground, landing on the spiky gravel rocks that made up the path. I hissed in pain as I picked myself up and brushed the more vicious rocks off my leg.
    "Hey there, my name is Chainy and I'll be going through with you today," I said to the Trainer. I then indicated the large signpost right in front of us - the new Trainer could choose to go to either the greenhouses, the gardens, or the picnic area. There were others, but they weren't accessible right now. I checked my backpack to make sure everything was there while the Trainer made his decision.
    I had been waiting there for at least 10 minutes before my ranger arrived. I wasn't that beat up about it, but I really wanted to get into the park and explore. Despite my knowledge of the park, this was actually my first time going into it.
    He ran past me and slammed the gate open for him and me to enter. Or maybe it was an accident because he fell straight onto the ground right in the grounds of the Botanical Gardens. Dust flew up and rocks scattered across the ground as Chainy flinched in pain blushed a little. I helped him up and he indicated the three places where we were allowed to go today.
    I thought. Where would a Snorlax most likely be? The greenhouses were a perfect climate and humidity for long term sleep, which I was very sure Snorlax liked to do. But the gardens seemed to have so much more solitude which Snorlax liked. I actually had Heard in a region called Kanto that Snorlax live in the mountains in caves that no one can reach except for them. The only reason that anyone could catch them at all was because they sometimes came down to residential areas to gorge themselves with human food.
    Finally, I considered the last choice, the picnic tables. Well, it sure sounded like it would be a place that Snorlax would like. I was pretty sure that Snorlax would go to where there was the most food to eat; I had finally decided.
    I watched as my ranger dusted himself off and checked his bag while waiting for my descision. I glimpsed at least five Pokeballs and some sort of eyepiece that I had seen in the ranger shop. I wondered what that was for. Finally, I snapped out of my daze and told my ranger the descision.
    "I think that I'll go with you to the Picnic tables. After all, it seems like the most logical place to go to find a hungry Pokemon."
    "I think that I'll go with you to the Picnic tables. After all, it seems like the most logical place to go to find a hungry Pokemon," Jake said to me.
    I nodded. It was a logical choice. Jake was probably looking for a Snorlax or a Munchlax - they were common objectives of Trainers visiting the Gardens. I noticed that Jake had a Pokeplayer, but he hadn't activated it yet - he was probably happy to try his luck for now.
    We started walking to the picnic area. Luckily for me, it was a short walk, perhaps five minutes. The Botanic Gardens had originally been designed as a place for the island's guests and few inhabitants to relax, but multiple Pokemon species had taken up residence and eventually the Gardens had just been added into the National Park. The Abandoned Power Plant was a similar story.
    We arrived at the picnic area, multiple tables and benches laid out seemingly carelessly on a large lawn peppered with trees to provide shade. It was rarely used as a rest stop these days, but garbage bins and water fountains were still maintained, partly for the Trainers and Rangers, and partly for the Pokemon wildlife. Some had even managed to use the water fountains themselves, and turf wars around this spot was common.
    I heard a rustling inside one of the rubbish bins. Another Ranger/Trainer pair must have come through recently, and some Pokemon had obviously decided to investigate their leavings. The rubbish bin fell over with a muted thud, and a Glameow crawled out. The black and white cat hissed at the bin, then turned its back on it and began washing itself. It either hadn't noticed us or was ignoring us. Knowing feline creatures in general, it was probably the second option.
    "Want to try catching a Glameow?" I asked Jake.
    The Glameow was sitting very straight and claning itself. The more i saw it the more scared I was.
    "Ummm, no." I had a fear of cats of any type, one of many reasons I chose a dog Pokemon for my second Pokemon. I tried tohide it from Chainy by standing still, but my mind forced me to back away towards the nearest picnic table so I could hide.
    I steadied myself against the table once i hit it and decided the best move would be to sit down. I imagined myself now, sitting awkwardly after mysteriously backing away from a weak pokemon. I tried to shrug it off and put my hands in my pockets.
    I felt the Pokeplayer sitting there and had an idea. Maybe i could scare away the Glameow with Snorlax's call. Hey, they weren't very intimidating by sound, but if this Glameow had ever seen a Snorlax, it would know how strong they are.
    I lipped it out of my pocket and placed it on the table. Then i shrugged off my backpack and unzipped the second biggest pouch before removing a CD case. The CD inside was plain white but it had the messy label inscribed with sharpie "SNORLAX!!!" as I had written. i clicked it open and slipped it inside the player.
    Once I clicked play i began to hear the odd groaning sounds of a Snorlax emanating from it. It was a pitiful excuse for a scare, but if it worked I'd be happy. I looked up at the cat to see its reaction.
    "Ummmm, no," Jake said as he backed gingerly away. Apparently he had a bit of a cat phobia. He backed up into one of the benches and sat down heavily. He pulled out his Pokeplayer and turned it on. It began making the bellowing and groaning sounds that a Snorlax made. After I heard it a few times my earplugs screened out the sound, thankfully.
    Apparently, Jake was hoping the sounds would scare the Glameow off. Unfortunately for him, it caused the exact opposite. The Glameow looked up curiously and saw it. It yawned and sinuously stretched out its body before gracefully walking over. It wasn't going anywhere.
    I shot a look at Jake. If he really didn't want to battle it, he'd have to pay $500 for a PokeDoll to escape. I didn't like extorting money from the Trainers, especially considering they've already paid to get into the Park, but these things cost money to make and import.
    I surreptitiously watched Jake to see what he would do.
    "Okaayy, well maybe if I scare it it'll go away. Howl, Bambi."
    I dropped Bambi's Pokeball to the ground where it fell and released a crystalline shape of a dog. The red light glittered off to reveal a ferocious looking dog that looked like it meant business. I relaxed a little.
    Bambi opened his mouth wider than should have been and let out a peircing roar that scared me more than I expected. It was high pitched and dug into your brain like a nightmare. It repulsed me almost as much as the Glameow did.
    I glanced subtly at the cat Pokemon to see its reaction.
    "Okaayy, well maybe if I scare it it'll go away," Jake said. He dropped a Poke Ball onto the ground and his Houndoom appeared in a flash of red light. It growled at the Glameow - apparently it was already aware of its Trainer's cat phobia.
    "Howl, Bambi," Jake said, and Bambi took a directly offensive pose. It howled viciously at the Glameow, but it also sounded like a roar of sorts. The Glameow hissed back at Bambi, clearly frightened. It's tail struck straight up in the air and it held its body low to the ground - classic scared-cat posture. But it didn't run.
    When Bambi finished howling, the Glameow hissed defiance and used its front claws to swipe at the ground, sending a cloud of dirt at Bambi, obscuring its vision. Apparently the Glameow was now not going to take no for an answer.
    "Ugh! Gross..." I was kinda pissed off now and I wanted this to stop. Bambi was strong enough to take it out. And in one hit probably. I had seen the dog completely devestate battlefields before. I mean, Bambi was pretty docile and personable (Pokemonable, I guesss, in this case), but when it came to battling, he got in to this kinda mode, I guess you could say. When he got there, his eyes turned black but still reflected tints of red. He would growl in a way that, although growling unto itself is an intimidating act, made you shiver in the aura of heat that he cast off. When he battled, he was so ferocious that I always found myself surprsed by the fact that the opposing pokemon stayed.
    I looked back up at the cat with not a trace of fear left, only righteous pissed-offness. It was definitely going to pay for injuring my Houndoom. I thought what the best move would be. Well, Glameow had a slightly weaker special defense than defense so I figured I should go with a special move. Bambi's good with anything really, but special attacks were the tippity top of the flapjack stack. Just a straight Flamethrower, no fancy moves or combos or anything. The only thing i was worried about was the accuracy drop that he had suffered, but it was only a small amount so i was confident that he could pull through.
    "Go Bambi! Hit em hard with your Flamethrower!" As soon as he had heard the word Flamethrower. He stood up and began the odd process. His eyes melted into that black and his shoulder blades looked more akin to the second part of the word than the first. Suddenly, he roared, arching his ead high into the air as he reared back on his legs. And then, as if to exsentuate the returning to the ground with a smash, spat a huge general hellfire in the the direction of the small cat and unfortunately, the trash can as well.
    I covered my eyes and backed away a bit to protect myself from being completely seared. When I heard the move sputter and then finally stop, I uncovered my face to see the result of the move.
    "Ugh, gross," Jake said as he saw the dirt spray all over his companion. I noticed that he didn't look scared any more. Instead, he was angry. In his mind, the Glameow was impeding his National Park progression, and he wanted it gone.
    "Go Bambi! Hit em hard with your Flamethrower!" Jake called out.
    Bambi growled assent, and he took a braced pose. His shoulders arched back and his eyes took on a black glow. He howled viciously, rearing onto his back legs. When his front legs hit the ground, he launched a big stream of fire at the Glameow. The hellion of fire surrounded the cat, burning it, and unfortunately melting the trash can as well. Both Jake and I had to back away a bit from the searing heat of the attack. I tried to look for the Glameow through my visor, but I couldn't see anything but fire through the heat vision and the motion sensor was being duped by the writhing flames. Suddenly, the little cat darted out of the flames, its front right paw glowing white. It made an upwards slashing motion, almost like performing an uppercut. The Slash attack caught the Houndoom across the chest, and the Glameow ran to the Houndoom's left, jumping onto a picnic table, away from the still burning fire. Hopefully it wouldn't spread any further.
    "That is NOT OK!" I shouted. Glameow was standing and all fours in the classic agitated pose. its tail wasstuck straight out behid it. Well, as straight as its tail could get. its hari was stuck straight up and its teeth were bared.
    Houndoom had gone to "hellhound" mode. Usually docile, it was now beyond anger. Its red irises had grown to fill its eyes with phosphorescent rage. i knew it was on the verge of letting loose an attack. I decided on a combo.
    "Let's take it out with a Smog Flamethrower tornado!"
    Bambi took in a deep breath that seemed to silence the air around us. There was a small pause where I could only hear the sof t crackling of fire from the wreckage of the last attack.
    The next series of events was all but lost to me. When Bambi let loose his attack such an inferno of poisonous gas and fire filled the air that i had to back away and shield my eyes for fear of blinding myself. Fortunately, when I got far enough to be protected, I had time to admire the attack with Chainy. Frankly, I was proud of Bambi.
    The best way to describe the attack was as a sort of side ways outward-spiraling swirl of fire and poisonous gas. The smell reminded me of acid and my father's cooking all at the same time. The mingled attacks widened to generally hit the area where the Glameow had been, but I hadn't seen the attack hit so I didn't know if it did actually hit. I waited at the toxic flames subsided to see the result of the furious attack.
    "This is not okay! Let's take it out with a Smog Flamethrower tornado!" Jake yelled.
    Bambi took a deep breath, and as he did so small purple tendrils of fog leaked out of his mouth. The tendrils began snaking towards the Skitty, but before they could reach it Bambi unleashed another Flamethrower. The fire passed through the gas and ignited it, increasing the power and longevity of the attack. Furthermore, Bambi kept exhaling the gas while performing the Flamethrower.
    The huge tornado of swirling flames was so hot that I had to move backwards. I even put my hand over my Swampert's Poke Ball, just in case I needed to summon him. Right before I was about to do so, however, Bambi closed his mouth. The fire tornado continued to destroy the picnic table for another ten seconds, and then the last few flaming remnants floated up into the sky.
    Sitting amidst the rubble of the table was a small doll. On closer inspection, the doll looked like a grey cat. Suddenly, the doll exploded, releasing a large puff of white smoke. As the smoke drifted away I could see the Glameow sitting where the doll was, calmly cleaning its left paw. The cat must have used Substitute to avoid taking damage from the devastating attack!
    Regretfully, I put my hand on Jake's shoulder. "You need to be a little bit more careful," I said to him quietly. "Try not to destroy any more tables."
    "Gah!" I. Hate. Substitutes. My least favorite move. I frowned a big frown. And then I snarled.
    Damn cat was too much trouble to deal with. That stupid cat ad cost Bambi valuable hp and it had made me damage the park property. I turned to Chainy and pulled out a few Pokebills.
    "One damn Pokedoll please," I said through gritted teeth. After I shelled out 500 Pokebucks and he handed me the doll, I whipped around and chucked it at (what remained of) the bench.
    "Here let me take care of the fires." There were small flames scattered around the grounds where I had battled. I tapped on one of my pokeballs which in turn released my other pokemon Saline.
    "Cool the grounds off with water gun, Saline, and then use Mist to disperse the smoke and smog." Saline looked up to the sky and let loose a shower of water on the nearby area. After that she released a cool mist that soothed my anger abit as well as completely eradicated all if the debris in the air.
    I turned back to look at where the Pokedoll had landed...
    Jake purchased a PokeDoll off me, none too happy about it. He flung the doll angrily at the park bench he had destroyed, but the Glameow was already nowhere to be found. Kyle also summoned his Empoleon to put out the two fires - I was glad he did, if he hadn't then he was one step closer to being asked to leave.
    The Empoleon appeared in a red flash and shot water from its mouth onto the fires, quenching them completely. It then breathed a light blue fog from its mouth, which carried away the last remnants of Smog and smoke. I nodded. If it weren't for the charred grass and destroyed picnic tables, no one would know a battle had happened here.
    I led Jake past the picnic area, towards the forest. There were no other Pokemon around here. "I know you've inserted the voice disk, but you haven't activated it yet. If you want a greater chance of meeting a Snorlax you should do so," I advised Kyle as I did so.
    I looked down at my player while simultaneously raising my arms a bit out of the way. I brightened.
    "Oh yeah!" I pressed the play button on my player and began to hear comical moaning sounds coming from it. I smiled. There was yet a chance to catch this Snorlax.
    We headed out of the picnic area and into the wooded area of the botanic gardens. It seemed alot more quiet and hushed here, more like a rainforest. The narrow path was littered thickly with diverse greenery. Sometimes it played tricks on your eyes. Twice I swore I saw a huge angry face staring up at us.
    It was also unseasonably hot. Sweat was trickling down the sides of my face and I was beginning to get uncomfortable in the jacket i was wearing. The humid atmosphere seemed to be making Bambi more uncomfortable than she was before we entered, due to her injuries so I recalled her and tried to stay closer to Saline. For some reason, the arctic Pokemon never strayed far from arctic tempuratures.
    "Come on back, Bambi," I whispered. I felt like it would be sort of aagainst the rules to say something louder in the hushed atmosphere.
    Chainy paused in his leading stride and I followed suit. He was staring witha furrowed brow as if there was something worrisome up ahead.
    I waited for his signal to continue...
    We walked into the forest area of the gardens. I wasn't entirely sure how the rainforest-like weather conditions were preserved without using a glasshouse, but I assumed it was either some kind of air-based technology, or something to do with the supernatural powers Pokemon had.
    I heard some scratching up ahead, and I held my fist up, to indicate that Jake should stop. I furrowed my brow, trying to see what was up ahead a lot easier. Finally, I managed to catch a glimpse of what was happening. A Grotle was scratching it's back up against a tree that had a spiky trunk.
    "There's a Grotle up ahead," I said quietly to Jake. "Are you interested in battling it? If not, we can try to sneak away."
    I Stared at the Pokemon scratching its back and sighed. Yeah I wanted one of them, but it would be more effort than is worth going for it. I looked at Saline and smiled. She was sniffing at a flower near the edge of the path. She looked like she was having fun and I was happy for her. We hadn't done anything fun in a while and she was frustrated that we barely got out.
    I turned back to Chainy and said, "Well, it'd be nice to have that Pokemon, but I really don't think that we have time. I want to be finished with this before dusk so I'd like to see if we can continue looking for my Snorlax." I looked back up ahead towards the end of where the trail tapered off and wondered what we were going to do to get around it. The forest looked pretty thick, but maybe Chainy knew a way to avoid cutting through the dense greenery and brush.
    "Well, it'd be nice to have that Pokemon, but I really don't think that we have time. I want to be finished with this before dusk so I'd like to see if we can continue looking for my Snorlax," Jake said.
    I nodded, and waited for Jake to say which way he wanted to go, but he remained silent. I shrugged, and began to quietly lead him around the Grotle. However, at an inopportune moment, Jake's PokePlayer made the low roaring call of a Snorlax. The Grotle immediately stopped scratching and roared a defiant response. It half-destroyed the tree with a mighty shove of it's shoulder, and then it began barreling in our direction.
    "You'd better get ready to battle, this looks like an angry one," I advised Jake. OF course, running away was an option, but if the Grotle found us we could be in serious trouble.
    The Grotle began to throttle in our direction. I looked at Saline and she nodded as if knowing that she was ready. I turned quickly to Chainy and said, "Let's try to get away in this direction."
    I pointed into the forest where it looked as if there was some crouching room and dashed to it waiting for Chainy to follow.
    OOC: Don't forget that the post count min is 500.
    After answering, Jake quickly turned and ran into the forest, trying to circle around the Grotle. Unfortunately, he stepped on a large branch, which made a cracking sound that echoed amongst the trees. Exactly one second later the Grotle roared, and it began smashing through the trees trying to find us.
    "Move," I said urgently to Jake, and I pushed him forward. We ran blindly through the trees for a good ten minutes. Finally, the Grotle either got tired of chasing us or went the wrong way, because I couldn't hear it any longer. I dropped to the ground and carefully placed my palm just on the surface. I couldn't feel any vibrations, so I breathed a sigh of relief.
    Just as I did so, Jake's Pokewalker made a quick shrill beeping sound before reverting to the Snorlax roars and groans. I shot a quick look at the count on the screen - it now said 4.
    I put my back against a tree so I could rest for a minute. As I did so, I happened to glance up into the trees. A Sentret was watching us from a low-hanging branch. I pointed it out to Jake, but I didn't say anything because I was so out of breath.
    OOC:I know, sorry. I was kinda pressed for time.
    We stopped finally as we found we could run no more. Chainy, wheezing, kneeled to the ground and lay one hand softly on the ground. After a few seconds he seemed satisfied and lay back on the trunk of a tree and rested with clenched eyes.
    Saline and I relaxed immensely as we realized our safety was pretty much assured. I fell to my knees in weakness and was breathing really hard. I felt my lungs suddenly tense up and sieze. Gasping for breath, I desperately scrabbled for my inhaler in my pack. Wheni had finally removed it I took as deep a breath as I could from it while pressing down on the stopper.
    My lungs relaxed and I collapsed on the ground next to my ranger. A series of short, shrill beeps indicated that my Pokeplayer had hit 4 plays and I was one more chance away from never getting to find my beloved Snorlax. It shortly reverted back to the moaning call of the Pokemon. The air was already feeling more like syrup in my throat than dried cement.
    I looked over at Chainy to see how he was recovering from the run. He looked almost back to breath, but still only pointed at a wide-eyed Sentret, eyeing us upside-down from a tree. I shook my head and my hand at the same time, meaning to indicate that I didn't want the Pokemon.
