Ranger Ivy Frost

The Great Lakes were nice today, Ivy thought, watching the water sparkle from the sunshine and the ripples expand as some Water-type Pokémon bobbed at the surface. The Ranger was inspecting the boats and small docks around each of the little lakes, looking for holes or missing boards or seeing if anything needed a paint job. Haji was watching her from the end of the dock they were at, soaking up the sun rays as he laid on the warm wood.

She was repairing what she could, saving them time later. She had already pounded some nails back into place, and the hammer had come in handy bending the points of the nails on the bottom of the dock too. Someone had used ones that were too long, and they stuck out the bottom a few inches. She didn't want any Pokémon or person snagging themselves on them.

She just got up and dusted off her hands when her phone rang. She unclipped it from her belt and pressed the button to answer, and the office buzz from the Main Outpost came across as soon as she did. “Ivy,” she said.

“Hi, Ivy. This is Chloe. A run's come in but everyone else is busy. Can you take it?”

“Sure,” she answered. “Where's it to?” She faintly recalled her grandfather warning her about agreeing to something before finding out the details.

“It's in Mount Deckbi. I'll send the file over. Have fun.”

The secretary hung up, so she missed Ivy's curse. She could feel Haji chuckling quietly in his mind through their bond, and she stuck her tongue out at him. “Yeah, yeah, keep laughing. You get to go with me. Lucky you.”

“I do not mind the heat,” he said simply, and she envied his ability to suck up the rays without complaint.

The rest of the lakes would have to wait. She slid her long canvas vest on and pulled her red hair out of the hood it was stuck in. She supposed Deckbi was going to be hot today too. It always was. Ever since the new Pokémon had been discovered in the Park, the volcanic mountain had been a hot spot for Trainers all over.

When they were ready, Haji warped them out of the Lakes. The air shimmered, and she felt when they shifted locations by how the temperature went up rapidly. The Outpost to Deckbi stood before them,and beyond that was the mountain itself. It was muggy, and couldn't wait to get this run started. The faster they started, the faster they could leave.

Ivy took a seat on the bench next to the Outpost doors and relaxed into it as Haji jumped up to join her. Together they waited for their Trainer to show up, trying to get used to the heat before it was too much to bear.

"Onot embarass me this time, 'kay?" I said with a sigh. It wasn't so much a statement as a general question. Perfect Housewife tended to make my life a misery at the park. The hovering washing machine gave me a mischievous grin from her false eyes and floated forwards. I could hear her purring as her body remained cool, just like a refridgerator or something fancy and I couldn't help be jealous. Damn ghost coulddo just about anything. I kicked up one of the smaller stones on the dirtpath at her and laughed when it conked her in the head. She grunted a little but continued to ignore me. "Let's try and have fun."

The sun was bearing down intensely and I had to use my hands as makeshift fans several times. I was starting to regret taking the scenic route now. Sure, the large rocks were about as interesting as large rocks could be, but it was too hot, even being in just shorts and a t-shirt. Rotom began to make whirring noises and I paused for a second. Her body tilted upwards and a jet of water shot up into the air vertically. Within no more than a second the icy cold liquid rained down on me and I laughed. That washing machine would need to save her energy for later if she was hoping to get into many battles. She was my best battler after all.

After a few more minutes grass seemed to become more common, appearing in odd clusters every now and again. The grass was completely starved of any water but at least it was something to pay attention to other than the rocks and sand. It was pretty obvious most of the Pokemon were hiding underground, enjoying the cool earth while we were made to suffer up here. As we continued up a slowly-mounting hill we saw the familiar wooden lodge I recognised as the Ranger Outpost. There was a woman with bright red hair sitting outside, basking in the sun. A purpley cat was walking back and forth around her, tail swishing.

"Tom?" Rotom purred as her head tilted to one side and she advanced. She approached the cat and stared at it inquisitively. I tried to laugh off her curiosity and I could only hope the Ranger wouldn't mind the noisy Rotom. As I got a little closer, I made contact.

"Hey, I'm James. Before we start I have something to do because I know I'll forgot," I said hesitantly, slumping my bag onto the ground and taking out a Pokeplayer and inserting a disk. I pressed the green triangular symbol for play and a sad, mourning voice emerged. It was the voice of a Litwick.

Ranger Ivy Frost

They only waited about fifteen minutes before two forms appeared over the hill down the dusty road. As they came closer, Ivy could make out the form of a Rotom in washing machine form. It was grinning and bobbing along happily. She had always been a little creeped out by Rotom's smiles, but it seemed to fit. She couldn't deny that it was a little awesome.

A Trainer followed behind, a kid in his late teens with blond hair wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Deckbi would probably be too hot for anything else, she thought, ignoring the fact that she was covered up good. She tended to collect a lot of scratches and stuff otherwise.

The two met them at the bench as Ivy stood up, though the Rotom beat the Trainer there. It seemed very interested in Haji. “Tom?” it cried as it tilted its head and got closer, staring intently at the Espeon.

Haji just sat there while his tail swished, too calm to do much of anything. To this day, she had never seen him act rash. He gave the Rotom a slow blink like cats sometimes do, and a peek at their mind link showed her that he was just amused.

“Hey, I'm James,” the Trainer said as he arrived. “Before we start I have something to do because I know I'll forget.” Without anything else, he dropped to his knee and rummaged in his bag until he pulled out a Poképlayer and a disk. Inserting it, he pressed play and a familiar voice cried out.

“Ah, looking for a Litwick I see. We'll, you've come to the right place. I'm Ivy. I'll be taking you through today.” She offered a hand to help him up. “If you'll follow me we can get this run started.”

Haji jumped off the bench to join her, and the group trekked up the path to the gate. They were doing a new thing with it lately, making her scan a code from her phone into the receiver in order to open it. She took out the device and clicked to the correct screen, holding it up for the red light to read. With a positive beep, it clicked open, and the group continued inside before the Ranger shut it behind them.

Then they continued up the road closer to the mountain. When they got to the split in the path, she'd ask which way he wanted to go. For now though, it was just a straight shot. Boulders lined the path, and the wind occasionally kicked up dust that blew across the walkway. She did notice that the long, dry grass was growing better here than it had been though. It was a sea of faded greenish blades now.

A rustle sounded, and Ivy stopped. There were a lot of things that could be hiding in there. She waited a few moments as the rustling got closer. Then, there was silence, but still she waited. A few more seconds passed and then a form jumped out of the bushes, landing with a solid smack in the path in front of them.

It barked and growled lightly at them, sinking its front half low as it looked like it could pounce. It was a small bushy dog that was mostly orange and decorated with black stripes. Cream-colored tuffs off fur made up its tail, its neck, and the hair on the top of its head. It barked again as it stared at them, and Ivy turned to James.

“Any interest in a Growlithe?”

“Ah, looking for a Litwick I see. We'll, you've come to the right place. I'm Ivy. I'll be taking you through today.” She offered a hand to help him up. “If you'll follow me we can get this run started," she said and got up. Her Espeon leapt up after her eagerly, possibly trying to avoid the Rotom who seemed to want to follow her. We walked on for no longer than five minutes before we came to a gate. I saw my Ranger punch in some codes quickly that she had read off from her phone. We slipped through the large gate and it slid shut behind us. The Park sure was becoming so mechanic these days. Hopefully it'd always preserve it's natural areas long into the future.

The dusty ground was starting to incline steadily before it forked suddenly to the left and the right. There was a little more grass here, but still nothing to be amazed at. There were also some eratic boulders lingering around the place, looking oddly out of place at parts. My Ranger came to an abrupt halt as did her Espeon. I saw the purple ears prick upwards and then I heard it too. There was a scuffle coming from the bushes to our right. A small orange-and-black figure leapt out of the bushes and lowered down before us. It looked like a bowing tiger, prepared to strike at the nearest opportunity. It had a really cool tough of cream fur sticking out from the top of its chest proudly.

"Any interest in Growlithe?"

"Yeah, I like the look of this fella," I said, nodding to Rotom-wash. "Okay, Housey, start with a Rain Dance. Not only will it weaken its fire attacks but it will also help to cool us and our Ranger. We'll need to maintain our energy if the heat remains throughout the day." After finishing, I glanced over to see Rotom-wash starting the Water type attack already. Her body slid back and forth, left to right, rhythmically as she began making a distinct humming sound. Her hand-like parts rose up and I saw dark clouds start to form in the sky. It was such a stark contrast from just a few minutes ago, that I was slightly taken aback.

I felt a droplet of rain land on my head before dozens upon dozens began to pour down from the clouds. The Growlithe shifted uncomfortably and I could tell that he wasn't too fond of the rain.

"Excellent. Now try and use a Thunder attack," I concluded. I didn't want to use Water moves just yet as I didn't think thepoor pup would stand much of a chance against them. There was a loud cracking sound, similar to a whip, from the sky and there was a bright flash. Large bolts shot down from the sky. Rotom's hands moved around as she was controlling the electrical surges in the sky. The sheer look of concentration she had etched onto her face reminded me of a battle quite recently in which she saved her ass...

"Okay, I know Sceptile's Leaf Blade is gonna hurt, but you've gotta trust me on this one. Got it?" Washtom nodded, rain sliding down her face. "Wait for the right moment and go with your instincts..." I said, awaiting the Sceptile to move. The large green gecko leapt up high into the air, raising its blade-like arm above his head. It started to glow a bright white colour before he made his descent. He came shooting down on Rotom-wash at a blistering speed. "Thunder Wave!" I said, half-closing my eyes after saying it. I didn't really want to see how this collision went.

There was a loud thud as Rotom-wash was sent back onto the concrete ground. Sceptile didn't look all too flushed but I saw his eye twitch a little and I knew the paralysis had worked. "You okay, Housey?"

"Tom," she said weakly. She rose back up into her levitating posiition and awaited my command.

"Pain Split," I said with a devilish grin. Her face morphed to match my devilish grin. The poor Sceptile could do nothing but watch as his health was sapped away and my Rotom healed herself. "Now finish with a Signal Beam!" I commanded and no more than two or three seconds later than the brighty-coloured dual beams had bested the overgrown lizard, "And who said type advantages mattered?" I finished giving Rotom a celebratory high five, basking in the complete cheesiness of the moment.

“Yeah, I like the look of this fella,” James said, nodding to his Rotom.

The Pokémon seemed eager to battle. Rotom really seemed to like the Trainer's first command, manipulating the weather with a Rain Dance. He called it 'Housey', and she thought that was a pretty interesting nickname for it. Ivy supposed it looked a little like a house because it was so bulky. Moreover, Rotom's many forms were of common household appliances.

The Rotom immediately went to work, shifting its body so it could do the appropriate moves for the dance. It rocked back and forth and to the left and right in a sort of pattern. Ivy could hear it humming too, and after a few moments it rose its limbs into the air, completing the sort of ritual it must take. She had seen and Alakazam do something similar with its spoons.

Sometimes working the weather was tricky, and although the Pokémon knew the move, it didn't always work because weather was a force of nature and therefore unpredictable. Since this was Deckbi though, she didn't think it'd be a problem. Sure enough, a few moments later the sky seemed to cloud over and darken slightly, and she thought she heard thunder rumbling in the distance.

The problem with so many hot days is that it tended to bring in storms and nasty weather after a while. Once that set in, even though this was a fire volcano, it only took a little more to convince the sky to rain. The thunder sounded closer, and she could see the dark shadows above started to swirl. The air cooled a few degrees suddenly, and she knew the rain was going to come down this time.

The Growlithe could sense the changes too, and it shifted from foot to foot uncomfortably. Suddenly, it let out a piercing howl that filled the air like some old western movie. Then, the rain fell down.

It came slowly at first, just a few drops here and there, but then it started to come down in sheets. Ivy quickly threw up her hood and held out the side of her vest so Haji could get under it. She heard the Growlithe yip in response to the cold drops. They certainly were that. There was quite a change compared to the stifling heat they just had.

“Excellent,” James called. “Now try and use a Thunder attack.”

Ivy always thought it weird that they named the attack after a sound instead of the lightning it was actually made of. The Rotom got to work on the attack, and soon she saw tiny flashes in the clouds above, the lightning stirring and the cover rumbling as the attacked charged.

The dog seemed to know something big was going to happen, and it let out a might Snarl in Rotom's direction. The air around its muzzle shimmered dark a little, something like when Haji teleported them from place to place. Rotom was affected a little by it too, flinching a bit and taking a look at the dog before continuing with its attack.

A sharp crack sounded from above, and then a massive bolt of lightning struck down, followed by many smaller ones. They came down right on the dog, and it howled more as they hit, only this time it was in pain. The rain probably didn't help, making the poor thing too wet to dodge the electricity and making a great conductor for the attack.

The dog staggered a bit as the lightning stopped, but it didn't go down. Its fur did stick up on end though, affected by the static pulses. If she touched it, she'd probably get a shock. It looked okay for the most part though, and it was back to growling at its opponent.

It would probably put up a good fight before going down.

As the thunder rumbled above the puppy could tell that something was up. It's little chestnut eyes turned to Rotom and it started to howl. The air seemed to move a little, almost as though you could see the sonic waves. Rotom flinched a little and I could tell that that was a Snarl and Howl combination attack. The lightning came down then, one of the larger bolts cracking into the orange dog Pokemon and causing it to yelp in pain. It scurried back a bit, but still, it didn't seem all too hurt by the attack. I liked tough opponents no doubt.

"Rotom, let's try use a Psych Up attack to copy his stat changes and to eliminate your reduced Special Attack. Then try and hit that Growlithe with a Thunder Wave and Shadow Ball combo we've been working on. Only if you feel up for it though." Rotom glided forward a little and her eyes sort of glazed over a little. It was like she was closing her eyes, except she didn't have any eyelids. She began to make clicking like noises as she assessed the opponent and began to take on its stat changes. Her eyes shot around as she made sure she knew where Growlithe's vulnerable spots were and were it was most offensive. Her eyes locked onto the opponent's pointed little fangs and also to its soft underbelly, presumably its most vulnerable spot.

"Actually, Rotom... I think we both stumbled across something at the same time. Its underbelly is its softest spot and I'm sure our attacks will do more if we aim for there. Only problem is that we have to try and flip him over," I mused aloud. "Hmm... okay, I have a plan." I bent down and picked up a pebble from the ground. I whistled loudly to grab the Growlithe's attention. "Here, boy, follow the stone," I said, waving it around. The orange pup seemed interested in it. "Now, I'm gonna toss the pebble for the Growlithe to hopefully get distracted by and chase. Then I want you to hit the ground just before him with a Thunderbolt. The force should be enough to flip the puppy onto its back where we can strike with Thunder Wave to keep it in place and then a powerful Shadow Ball to the stomach..."

Boy, Rotom sure looked lost, but she nodded anyway and attempted this tricky combination of moves.

James was determined to continue the battle. He ordered a complicated chain of attacks that would supposedly fix his stat drops, surprise the Growlithe, and successfully knock it back, paralyze it, and damage it. The Rotom looked a little lost, but Ivy could see its eyes moving, trying to keep track of everything and please its Trainer by executing everything in the right order. It started out with its Psych Up, studying the dog as it tried to copy its stats and make itself stronger.

At least the Trainer was keeping track of weak points and stuff. She was glad to see Trainers be smart in battle.

To aid in his plan, James picked up a rock, and immediately the puppy caught sight of it. It crouched down on its front paws, getting ready to spring. The Trainer threw it after a nod to Housey, and Growlithe immediately tried to go after it, lunching through the air.

It landed inches from the stone, but Rotom was waiting, and a sizzling thunderbolt came crashing down right next to the dog. Growlithe yelped and flipped, and as it did, a stream of fire blasted from it in surprise, aimed right at Rotom. The washing machine looked a little singed, but it shook off the blast due to the rain and type.

Then, Rotom send those cackling thunder waves over to paralyze the small dog. The bolts wrapped around the dog's legs and body, stretching over its cream underbelly. Then Rotom fired off its murky Shadow Ball, and it impacted the dog with another howl. It was still struggling though, so Ivy knew it was mostly fine, just battle tired.

“You've almost got it now!” she called.

The plan worked almost as good as I could possibly have hoped for it to work. As soon as I had tossed the little stone, Growlithe emerged from his crouched position and dove after the rock. There was a loud cracking sound as Rotom's Thunderbolt smashed into the ground just before the Growlithe, smashung it into pieces. The fire pup was sent backward through the air before landing sharply on his back and getting shot with a charged blast of electricity from Rotom.

The deep blue shot of electricity matched the cloudless sky above. It made a sizzling sound as it hit the puppy's tail and rippled onwards through the rest of his body. No sooner than had the sparks faded than a blast of dark energy whalloped into the junior firehound. He gave a loud bark to show how he disapproved of the attack, but he was on his feet, fangs bared at Rotom, in no time. He let out a throaty territorial growl as I planned our next attack.

"Okay, Housey. One more attack should do it. Let's try a Hex attack. It should be more powerful than Shadow Ball, but keep it low-powered. I'm gonna make an attempt at capture after the attack," I said, passing a Super Ball between my hands as I got ready to mke the capture.

James decided to go for one more attack before capturing. “Okay, Housey. One more attack should do it. Let's try a Hex attack.” He took out a Super Ball to throw after the attack.

The Rotom nodded and began focusing. Hex was pretty neat. It was a ghost technique, but it worked best when the target was suffering from some sort of status. It amplified that, making the target seem to be under more agony than they were in. It didn't work so well without an ailment, as then the user had to create the illusion that it had one.

The Growlithe seemed to know it was nearing the end, and though he struggled to get up and get one last attack in, the jolting bolts of paralysis sent him crashing to the dusty ground again. She could see the coils wrapping around his limbs flash with electricity.

Then, Rotom unleashed its attack, and the dog howled. James didn't waste any time, lobbing the ball in the Growlithe's direction. It bounced off the dog's soft underbelly, and then the creature disappeared into the device in a beam of red light. It dropped to the ground, and the ball barely shook at all.

The capturing ping sounded, and the center of the device lit up in red. “Good job, that's one down,” she said, walking over to it. She picked it up and pocketed it, zipping up the holding space so she wouldn't lose it if they did anything extreme like cliff climb or something. Then she went back to the Trainer.

“Any specific place you want to go?” she asked. “I'm not sure what you're looking for besides Litwick, but we can go wherever you direct.”

Rotom's Hex attack worked quite effectively, despite the failed attempts he had at fleeing (hindered by a lucky jab of paralysis). I tossed the ball immediately, wanting to take advantage of his weakened state, my eagerness to capture this Growlithe, and also to get one with thia run. The blistering eat was starting to give me a but of a headache. I took a swig from one of my water bottles, but it was disgusting and warm. My ranger tried to hide a smile but I knew she had been laughing at the disgusted faces I made.

"Any specific place you want to go? I'm not sure what else you're looking for besides Litwick, but we can go wherever you want," my ranger said.

"How about the caves near the sand dunes? It'll be cool there, at least."

James decided he wanted to go to the caves near the sand dunes. There were a lot of caves here, even more than in Meteor Valley. In fact, the mountain was filled with them. Maybe he was wanting to go to the volcano. There were a couple paths in that direction, though the safest one was just going up the mountain and looking down.

His Litwick disk continued to play, the cry echoing through the area. She did wonder a bit at his choice of location since he wanted to find the small candle Pokémon. Another Trainer she had went into the caves after playing a disk too. She thought they were more likely to be out in the sun and not in the damp, humid caves. There was a lot of sun out here.

Still, they might find one on the way, perhaps hanging out in the sand pits. There was only one way to find out. They continued on, and Ivy led the way. She had gone to Deckbi a lot lately, so she knew the area he was talking about perfectly. They would have to take one of the paths around the mountain for a short while.

The road was its normal boring: a dusty path lined with rocks. Nothing had really changed about the place. Then sun was hot on their heads, and she was pretty sure they could be cooking food out in this heat if they had a flat stone.

Suddenly the small rocks on the path began to jump, and she stopped as the ground shook a little bit. The sound got louder as she waited, and then she saw a raised path of earth coming toward them from the north east. With a burst of dust, and rocks, a small brown mole popped out of the ground.

“Diglett!” it said, looking at them curiously.

“Want to battle this one?” she asked.

As we began walking along the dusty road, sand began to spray upwards as a blast of hotwind passed by. Luckily for us, it only lasted a few seconds and we could hurry towards the caves, both eager to leave the sand and the heat. After a few seconds a brown head poked out of the ground. It had coal black eyes and a large pink nose, similar to a clown's nose. After a little thought, I decided against it. Diglett was a pretty cool little fella, but they were easily obtained and I was hoping to catch some rarer Pokemon.

"I'm not really interested in this Diglet. I have one last Pokedoll in case he tries to follow us. There is an enttance that leads into a large cavern inside the mountain a little ahead"

II took out the battered Marill Pokedoll in case this was a persistent Diglet.

James wasn't in need of a Diglett, but he informed her that he had a Pokédoll in case it decided to be persistent. She saw it was in the shape of a Marill instead of the standard Clefairy, so she wondered if they had started releasing the new models yet. They had been the same old style for years. It was about time they changed things up.

Since she wanted to move on, she should've known the Diglett was going to put up a fuss. They always did.

As soon as she went to take a step, it disappeared under the ground and reappeared near her foot. She didn't want to step on the little thing, so she had to step back. When she tried to go a different way, the same thing happened. Finally shaking her head and giving in, she motioned for James to put the doll down. He did, and the Diglett disappeared with it underground after snatching it up. Then it bothered them no more.

They continued down the road to the sand pit. There were several large rocks surrounding that area, like a gigantic sandbox. She could see the edge of the sand though, and once they cleared the rocks ahead, they would be almost to the cave entrance.

Then, a Pokémon jumped up on top of the largest rock they were passing. She had to bring up a hand to block the sun so she could tell what it was. She saw a Fire-type. It was small and bipedal with a slight afro-looking top. It was ruby colored, with a cream nose and underbelly. It watched them curiously.

As soon as we started to walk away from the Diglett, it popped underground. I hoped that it was happy to leave us on our way in peace, but surely enouggh, it popled up beside my right foot, looking as inquisitive as ever. My Ranger indicated that this would be the best time to give it the Pokedoll. I dropped the round blue bobble onto the mole's head. Its face lit up and it began to do circles around the doll. Smiling, we trudged onwards.

"Mag, mag!" something cried. I looked up to see a bright red creature with a large, external brain-like thing.

"Any interest in a Magby?"

"Nah, I don't really have much more room for Fire types now that I have Growlithe and I want to save room for a Litwick or Torkoal."

James didn't really need a Magby since he had already captured the Growlithe and was looking for some specific Pokémon. That was fine. It was his call. She heard that somewhere on the mainland there was a place where Magby were really common anyway.

They trudged on, and the creature let them pass thankfully. The came around the arrangement of rocks into a vast sandy area. There were a few of the small weed plants that grew in the harsh environment lining the side, and the improvised sandbox was littered with large and small stones. The cave entrance was just through it, on the mountainside.

They started though, and she was glad of her thicker hiking boots. She remembered when she was younger getting annoyed at sand in between her sandals and feet for too long. The grains were pretty loose in places. She was sinking down a few inches easily as they walked.

Suddenly, something in front of them moved. She caught sight of a coiled tail,and immediately her mind thought 'snake'. There weren't any Ekans here though. Then, a few feet of sand in front of it moved, and a form emerged.

It was yellowish, like the sand, and it had tiny wing arms. It almost looked like it was sitting on its back with the blue and cream stripes it had across the top. Its eyes also looked closed, and there were blue rings around those too.

“Wow, a Dunsparce. Any interest in this one?”

After a while the ground started to get darker and there were a little more plants scattered around the place. As I looked up I realised that there was a hugecliff edge jutting out from above. I squinted my eyes looking up at iy as the sun glared down. As soon as my attention turned from the sunny edge of the cliff to the ground, I nearly jumped. There was an ancient creature lying on the sand, oddly resembling an overgrown fly.

"Damn, Dunsparce are pretty rare and I have wanted one for a while. I think I'll battle this little fella. Rotom, come on back. This seems more of a job forTogekiss." I whipped out a greyish blue Pokeball as Rotom disappeared into hers. In a flash of light that could rival the glaring light of the sun a large winged creature appeared. He was covered in red and blue shapes and he hovered lazily above the sand. "Kiss, this Dunsparce is your first opponent in a while. Let's try and hit it with a Thunder Wave so you can outspeed it. I don't really remember how fast these things are. Then, lets try an Aura Sphere. Got that?" I asked the oval Pokemon.

He nodded before drawing his wings together suddenly. I noticed a blue ball of electricity start to formbefore his mouth as he prepared the Thunder Wave.

James seemed glad to see Dunsparce, saying they were rare and that he wanted for for a while. She was glad they came across something else he was interested in; often times she had runs where a Trainer only took one or two Pokémon home with them. She hadn't really seen too many Dunsparce, so she supposed she wouldn't know its rarity. She didn't get to the mainland much.

He decided Rotom wasn't right for this battle though, and instead he called it back and released a different one. In a red flash, a flying Pokémon appeared. It was puffy and white and decorated with red and blue triangles on its body, a Togekiss.

The land snake watched this new opponent carefully, though it didn't really make a lot of movements. She wasn't sure how fast it was. She thought she saw it twitch though, and somehow she thought that it was probably capable of moving quickly when it needed to.

“Kiss, this Dunsparce is your first opponent in a while. Let's try and hit it with a Thunder Wave so you can outspeed it. I don't really remember how fast these things are. Then, let's try an Aura Sphere. Got that?” he asked.

The Togekiss seemed to understand just fine, and as he tensed himself, a ball of electricity formed in his mouth. It cackled and shone blue, and with a heave of its body, the bird shot his attack at the Dunsparce.

It wasn't going to be fooled though. It must know the technique or have seen it before because suddenly the thing moved, and a curtain appeared in front of him as he twisted and swirled his tail. She could faintly see the outlines of the screen, and that was only because the sun sparkled off of it. She knew what it was, but it was too late to warn James, as Togekiss had already let off his attack.

The ball of paralyzing energy slammed into the screen. Ivy watched its reflection in the mirror as it approached, and instead of veering off like she had seen from Reflect and Light Screens, this one sent the attack right back at Togekiss. The bolts of electricity wrapped around the birds limbs, soaking up into his feathers. He cried out as he became partially crippled.

Still, he remembered James' other command, and though he struggled, he gathered energy to him. Blue waves of energy swirled around him as a ball of light grew in front of him. Then, he fired off the Aura Sphere.

The Dunsparce was already in motion though, digging into the ground in a spinning fashion, like it was showing off. It didn't quite make it into the hole completely though, since it was so long. The attack clipped its tail as it finished disappearing into the earth, and then everything was quiet while they wondered where it went. James was going to have to be careful with this one.

As the ball of electrical energy shot forward, the Dunsparce moved really quickly. With a shake of its rattling tail a translucent orange screen materialised before him. The energy bounced right off the screen and shot back to Togekiss. He let out a low growl as it burried it's way into his feathers. Before I knew what happened next the land snake had disappeared beneath the soil. I cursed. I didn't really think this Pokemon was worth the effort but it sure was a tough oponent.

"Togekiss, try a Heal Bell while we wait for it to emerge. Then we can attempt to ambush it with a Sky Attack. From what I've learnt from the move is that you'll be coated in a ball of glaring light, hopefully bright enough to momentarily blind the Dunsparce, then you can strike with the powerful move. Sound good?"

Togekiss nodded slowly before he landed on the dusty ground softy. He let out some high soothing sounds as his wings arched outwards. His mouth closed suddenly and his eyes slid shut as a gold colour covered his body. Hopefully, the Heal Bell would work. But Togekiss was trained pretty well by myself from our battles we had endured before and he knew it was better to go with his instincts and jump straight into the next attack before waiting to see whether the previous move had worked. If he didn't follow this rule he would lose out on valuable time that he could be using to charge the Sky Attack.

Suddenly, his eyelids shot open and his chestnut eyes scanned the dusty plains. Seeing no sign of the opposing Dunsparce, he shot upwards directly into the cloudless sky. His broad wings were beant backwards as he allowed his body to arch upwards. As my eyes tried to follow the Togekiss but the glaring light above made this almost impossible. Now it wasn't just that but it grew steadily brighter and brighter until I had to duck down. My sight was blurry after just a little bit of looking. This attack sure would be a bitch to face I thought.

Ranger Ivy Frost

The battlefield stayed silent as James thought of what to do. The Dunsparce was a little trickier than he anticipated. It showed a little on his face.

“Togekiss, try a Heal Bell while we wait for it to emerge. Then we can attempt to ambush it with a Sky Attack,” he said.

The bird nodded and floated down to the ground, bathing itself in a gold glow. Ivy knew that this move would heal the user and its allies if they were close enough. A small bell sound would be heard too, but you had to be really close to hear it. Slowly, Ivy saw the move wear down the electric sparks, and soon they faded all together, the feathers returning to their undisturbed state.

Then, the Togekiss darted into the sky, starting to glow an intense white. He scanned the field as he did, hovering high up above to watch for any movement. The Dunsparce was going to have to come out some time, and Ivy knew Togekiss would be ready. Luckily, the land snake being underground gave the bird enough time to charge up the attack.

Then, there was movement as the Dunsparce revealed itself from a tunnel. It popped out with a puff of dust, bunching up dirt and rocks as it emerged. It had its eyes on Togekiss, watching warily. Then the bird dove to strike.

The light burned, and Ivy had to look away. She figured the Dunsparce wasn't doing much better. However, the rocks around it, the ones from the tunnel it dug and the ones on the field itself, were starting to move. They had a sort of energy around them, an aura of some sort, though she couldn't make out if it had a color or not. The air was just sort of shimmering around them.

Togekiss called out and slammed down onto Dunsparce just as the rocks lurched up to attack him. They collided with a smack. Togekiss was thrown back by the rocks, landing on the ground several yards away while Dunsparce was knocked out of his tunnel and sprawling into the sand. It gathered itself, though damaged, and coiled up a little, like it was prepping itself for something. James would have to be careful.
