With the release of the Shadow Ball, Volcarona unleashed her own attack as well. It was a blast of flames that seemed to resemble either a cross or a star as it shot forward, spinning around in an almost-but-not-quite mesmerising fashion. The flames smashed into Rotom's body and I was grateful for her typing as they licked at Rotom's skin for a few moments before disappearing in a hissing sound, that kinda gave me shudders. Rotom still had the Discharge ready and with a sudden propel forwards it was sent forward, smashing into the levitating Volcarona at the same time as the Volcarona. I saw a glimmer in the air as one of the screens Volcarona had created gave one last bit of protection before flickering out. The dark mass of greys, navys and blacks whammed into Volcarona's stomach and she grunted a little. There was a split second when a huge discharge of electrical pulses travelled along her body before vanishing into her. The Discharge attack acted in much the shame way, albeit with bigger and more blunt sparks.

The sudden charge of electrical energy in Volcarona seemed to much for her and she dropped a little closer to the ground, made a struggling attempt with her large leaf-like wings, but the paralysis got to her and she stumbled, dropping slowly from out of sight. It didn't matter that this Pokemon was a Fire type. Nothing could survive intense flames like that of a volcano, contrary to what some of the earlier Pokedex entries said. I instinctively darted up to the edge - Rotom a split second behind me. I saw Ivy rush forward as well. Volcarona was on the smallest of juts coming out from the wall, horribly close to the lava (which seemed to be bubbling and swirling more as though it suspected a new victim was close. Volcarona looked worried as her wings wouldn't support her thanks to my stupid idea to paralyse her and she couldn't jump while being this close to the lava.

"Volcarona," I shouted over the sizzling of the molten lava swishing down below. "You have to trust me! I'm going to have Rotom use its Ominous Wind to create a strong wind from below. It will be cold and it will feel painful but I need you to trust me to get you out from danger. Spread your wings out wide and follow the wind until you're high enough to be able to glide back onto one of the larger ledges."

I couldn't read Volcarona's face but I had no time to sit around judging faces.

"Rotom, now!" I called. I could hear a faint whistling sound below - it sounded so creepy as it scaled up the volcono's inside, ascending in pitch and volume until it was almost like a shreik. My hair began to blow as this wind picked up. The Ominous Wind would keep getting more powerful until it reached its climax, then Volcarona had to leap into the wind, all six wings outstretched. "Everyone, back!" I called. We needed to get out of Volcarona's way if she followed the wind.

(OOC: Watch out for saying what happens to Volcarona. That hovers a little close to the line. The theory in that one was kinda to make you save her while she was falling, but this works. Also her Light Screen and Safeguard ended.)

James dashed to the edge of the cliff to join them, desperately looking for the Volcarona. He probably knew that she wouldn't be able to resist the lava despite being a Fire-type. That was a very common misconception. There were few Pokémon that could actually withstand it.

Thankfully though, the fire moth was somewhat saved by a tiny ledge that barely hovered over the fire pit. She wasn't completely safe though, as pockets of the molten rock bubbled up and popped dangerously close to striking her. If any of it touched her, it would burn her badly.

“Volcarona!” James shouted to her, trying to get her attention. It seemed he had a plan to save the moth, and he was trying to convince her to trust him.

Ivy wasn't sure how well that would work, but it was better than nothing. The idea was to use an ominous wind to get enough air under her winds to get her back up to a safer ledge. It was a good idea, but unfortunately there was no way Rotom would be able to prevent the gust from hurting her a little bit. That might make her go against the plan just because she'd be resisting. Ivy looked up and saw one of the Light Screens still there through, so that would probably dull the feeling a little bit. It was better than doing nothing, at least.

The Trainer shouted to Rotom to begin the wind, and a whistling accompanied the air as it started to glow darker. It continued to make noises on the way down, the noises echoing off the walls and sounding like a ghost was haunting the entire place with a loud whine.

The wind reached the moth, and it gathered under her, waiting for her to stretch her wings. Thankfully, either by following James' plan or by her struggling to save herself, she did open her wings. She hissed as the ghastly wind bit into her, but the current was enough to send her upward with a draft. The air whooshed up from the pit as she soared into the air, and she was able to glide easier over to the main ledge they were on, only on the other end.

She didn't look very pleased though, probably angry that she had been sent over the edge. She began to wobble a bit in place, and then sticky, white string suddenly shot out from her digits, coating Rotom in a String Shot that would make it hard to move. That was just a distraction though, as Ivy saw a ring of fire forming in front of the moth. It was spinning around and growing in size. A Fire Spin.

James would have to be careful now that she was really ticked off. She wouldn't be able to undergo too much more damage, but she clearly wasn't going to just give up either.

As the whistling sound of the Ominous Wind began to die down I saw the form of the brute moth glide magestically upwards. It reminded me of ome ugly angel for a split second - that is, until I saw her face. Her face was contorted with rage and pure hatred. Her brow was furrowed and her stare was so intense I could feel my palms sweating. She wobbled a little as she landed, but the twitching of the paralysis seemed to have died down a little bit, which I wasn't all too grateful of. I'm not gonna lie here, I was mildly horrified to not see the Volcarona showing signs of happiness and gratitude for being rescued, but no that was clearly not the case. A thick jet of white silky liquid shot out from Volcarona's mouth after a shreiking hiss. The gooey substance coated Rotom. I knew this was going to make Rotom a lot less quick in response to things, or possibly rotted to the spot.

"Ugh, Rotom. That String Shot attack isn't good. Try and incinerate it with a Spark so that you'll be free to move."

The idea of Spark was for the electrical shock to spark up a flame to incinerate the webs that it was tangled inside of. I wasn't all-too sure how well this was gonna work, but eh, we had better hope for something.

I could see the Volcarona was quite weak and I wasn't quite sure how much damage I could allow Rotom to do, without risking KOing this particular weakened Volcarona. I saw her limbs and large wings began to twist again as she began another move. The air before her seemed to shimmer and looked slightly off and I realised that she was clearly preparing another Fire type move. As Rotom was trapped here, its only Water type move, Hydro Pump, would be horribly inaccurate from this point and couldn't douse the flames. I only had one option left to do. A weak, Ghost typed move that was very useful in few situations. "Astonish on Volcarona before she finishes her move!"

How best to perform this move. I racked my brain to think of when I'd seen this move before in the Ultra Dex practise guide. Chimecho makes a horrible noise from its mouth and releases multiple red waves of energy from its mouth that hurts the opponent's ears, or Chimecho makes a frightening face and sticks out its tongue. A shadow also appears on Chimecho's face, frightening the opponent. There was another type: Misdreavus comes out of nowhere and makes a chilling face that frightens the opponent. Or Rotom could go with the most well-known one, that of the ghoulish Ghost Pokemon, Gengar - Gengar appears out of nowhere, raises its arms, makes a scary face and shadows appear on its body and around its face, frightening the opponent.

"Rotom, let's go with screeching sounds this time... And try a Confuse Ray. Yes, it could be distracted and unable to perform a move... Excellent."

James voiced his disgust at the String Shot, making a face that almost made her laugh. He had a potential way out of it though. “Try and incinerate it with a Spark so that you'll be free to move,” he said, hoping the charge from the electricity would set the web on fire so it would fall off.

Then he wanted Rotom to try and startle the fire moth so she wouldn't attack using an Astonish. She had personally used that technique many times in her own battles, using the distraction to either get away or do another attack without consequence. The next order up on the menu was a Confuse Ray, something that distorted the brain waves and made a Pokémon not know what was going on. Sometimes they even struck themselves since they didn't really know what they were doing.

The fire still churned at Volcarona's feet as Rotom charged up his spark. The electricity cackled as it interfered with the white string. The gunk was heated up, and it eventually caught too much heat and melted off, being so close to the source of the lightning. Then, Rotom began to screech and wave around a bit, trying to distract the moth.

She had already fired off her attack though, and a swirling funnel of flame shot toward the Rotom. The screeching did affect her though. Ivy saw her trying to duck her head and bobbing a little skew as the sound echoed in her ears.

The Fire Spin wrapped around the washing machine in the mean time. It didn't do much, but it was obstructing its line of vision. Still, it managed to fire off the drunken-traveling orbs of the Confuse Ray with little trouble, and as the ray soaked into the moth, the Fire Spin eventually died down.

The Volcarona wasn't done though, trying to charge up another attack. She looked confused though, and when she went to release whatever she had been storing up, she smacked herself instead, causing her head to shake and her floating to weave a bit. James could really take advantage of the distraction if he thought of something.

There was a sound similar to a lighter flickering into existence, a spark came into play. The spark caught onto the sticky strands leftover from the String Shot attack Volcarona had used. The flames licked up all the tough strands and it began to resemble melting wax, and must have surely felt that way too, as it began to drip down Rotom's body. Rotom wriggled a little and the last strands came lose and joined the remaining in a clumsy-looking puddle of candlewax. Rotom began to screech and jump around frantically and never had I felt so ashamed of my Rotom before, but not in too bad of a way. It looked like some sort of crazy Primeape as it danced about making animal noises. What's more was that before the attack seemed to do anything a blast of spiralling flames had smashed into Rotom's side. She looked a little winded but was fine in no time.

I saw the smug look on the Volcarona's face and was determined to make the creature suffer for laughing at my amazing Rotom-wash. Volcarona's rear raised a little as she made to move forward, but BAM! three spinning purple orbs whammed her in the face. They disintegrated immediately but I knew that they released a gas of sorts that made you somewhat loopey for a while. Well, every Confuse Ray was different, just like the move Hidden Power, which relied n your Pokemon's Nature, personality and some other little-known factors that had slipped my mind at this time. Volcarona looked momentarily lost, and certainly bewildered. This attack was probably being more effective than it usually would be because Volcarona was at a much weaker state right now and her health really wasn't very high. Not to mention that this had been a very long battle and I had been able to switch Pokemon around and give them a break whereas she's been battling non-stop for quite some time.

"Rotom, great job, buddy." I gave her a pat on the back as she drew closer towards me. I looked once more at the confused Vlcarona, and to my complete and utter surprise, recognised shock... and possibly loneliness? The confused Volcarona was looking around daftly and was no doubt quite unaware of what was happening and it was clear she seemed to have forgotten all about her hatred towards me and my team. I realised this was the perfect time to capture her; when she was confused. Hopefully, when if she decided to join with us then she would be happy and experience what it was like to be part of a family. I could easily tell that she was not used to being around people, which was probably the cause for her hatred towards us and my Pokemon. I was determined to change all of that though - give her a new lease at life.

I pulled a circular capsule device from my pocket. It was a Hyper Ball, one of the best kinds of capsules for capturing Pokemon here at the National Park. I gave it a shake for good luck and felt it expand into a larger state while clenched in my hand. I gave one big toss and watched as it sailed through the air in a perfect arc.

James decided that trying to capture Volcarona while she was confused was a great idea. He praised his Rotom for all its hard work as he pulled out a Hyper Ball, hitting the button to make it expand. Of the equipment available through the shop, that was the best ball. Of course, there were some special balls that people could only get through special events, and then there was a new type of ball that was still in development coming too.

The Trainer shook the device, being maybe some sort of luck ritual, and then he gave it a strong toss. It flew through the air without interference, and the moth didn't seem to see it coming. She still looked confused. She kept looking back and forth, like wondering where she was.

The ball tapped her on the soft white hairs in her middle, and then the beam of red light sucked her inside. The Hyper Ball dropped to the center of the platform and shook violently. Maybe she was still a little ticked off about the battle. Eventually the ball stopped thrashing, and the center lit up in a bright red, like the shade of the lava. The ping sounded semi-easily through the air as it was distorted by the heat.

“Well done, James,” she said, going over to the ball. “That was a long one, but Volcarona is worth it.” She was very pleased with her Larvesta at home. All the troubles they had on Deckbi had been worth the new partners she gained.

She was about to ask him if he was ready to go when another Pokémon came up from the mountainside, scrambling up onto the shelf they were on. It was another Sandshrew, and it looked like it was pumped with adrenaline. It was breathing heavy and was trying to look intimidating by waving its arms threateningly. Maybe it saw the battle and thought it was tough too.

“Well, here's one more that wants a piece of you. Do you want to battle again or are you about ready to go?”

The Hyper Ball tapped the Volcarona's hairy white chest and sucked her right inside with a beam of red light. The ball thrashed about for a little bit but eventually drew to a halt. I was quite pleased with myself when it made a pinging sound of success. I was looking forward to testing this gal out!

Just as I turned to say I was ready to leave, I noticed another brown shrew. It looked excitedly at me, as if he was expecting a battle.

"Not today, little fella. Ivy, thanks for all yout hard work today. I'm ready to go home!"

James decided against battling the Sandshrew, and Ivy didn't blame him. He was probably pretty tired after all that battling with the moth, and he had already captured three pretty rare Pokémon, the limit for what you were allowed to take out of the Park.

He thanked her, and she smiled, glad the Trainer was happy with his catch. With another look to Haji, he teleported them off the mountain in a blurring of air. When the world righted itself, they were in front of the Main Outpost, and with a wave, she gestured for them to follow her.

She handed James the paperwork he had to sign and finish up while she healed his three new Pokémon and registered them under his code. When they were all done, she gave them back and waved him off as he left for home. Hopefully he'd be back soon.

Then she and Haji went back to her office. She took a look at all the paperwork she had yet to complete and made a face. Instead, the cat suggested they go do something more interesting, and Ivy grinned. There was probably some other Ranger they could bother.
