    Ranger John Shay

"John, something's going on at Mount Deckbi. One of our Rangers reported earlier that they noticed the volcano and the surrounding area was looking disturbed as they left the area. There are dark clouds hovering over the volcano, and the air is getting unnaturally hot. You're our closest Ranger to the area at the moment, can you check it out please?"

Jenny, the eye-candy and receptionist at the Registration Office, broadcasted through my ear via my wireless radio. The news she harbored was worrying, but I was sure I could handle it.

"Yeah, I've got it. Don't worry about it," I responded.

"Oh, and one more thing. There is a Trainer heading to Mount Deckbi as we speak. You will be his Ranger for his Deckbi run. I'm downloading his information to your PokeDex right now," Jenny added.

I took out my PokeDex, and sure enough the Trainer's information had streamed through to my device. His name was Tiberius Dreamsmasher, and he seemed to be a very formidable Trainer. I was not surprised that he had been admitted to Mount Deckbi despite the odd occurences. I could tell from his portrait alone that he was someone who could stand his ground.

"Alright, I'm going to the Ranger Outpost now. I'll report back later."

With that, I climbed on my Dragonite's back. She leaped into the sky, and within a few minutes, we were waiting for Tiberius at the Ranger Outpost of Mount Deckbi. I lounged back on the park bench, watching dark, smoky clouds hover over the volcano. This was mysterious, but I would get to the bottom of this.

OOC: Got something exciting planned for your first run. ;)

“Well, would you look at that? Something is going on at Mt Deckbi. I don’t know, you still want go?” I looked at Swampert as I voiced my thoughts aloud. The Water Pokemon looked at me and gave a barely perceptible nod. “That's what I like to hear. Okay, let’s get going. Return,” I said as I took out his Pokeball. A red light beamed from the ball as I called it back. I took the Pokemon containment unit and clipped the ball to the right side of my belt. I began to walk up the slopes to the imposing mountain. As I was on my way, I saw that the smoke was getting worse.

    Ranger John Shay

I heard some footsteps, and I turned my head. There was a Trainer walking towards me. I looked at my PokeDex, and the picture on my device matched this Trainer's profile. I approached him.

"Hey, Tiberius," I called, "My name is John Shay, and I'm your Ranger for your Park Run through Mount Deckbi."

As I shook Tiberius' hand, I motioned towards the volcano with my head. "As you can see, the mountain is clearly in disorder. Regardless, I'm going to take you through, since I believe that you can handle yourself under such circumstances. However, I'm just going to say be careful - we don't know what may be the cause. I have been ordered by HQ to check it out while I'm with you, and to see if I can fix it. However, understand that your safety will be my top priority."

"Now, let's get going, shall we?"

I called for Dragonite, and the three of us begun making our way towards the mountain, my Pokemon hovering above us. We were maybe a mile away from Mount Deckbi, but the journey to the mountain would be much longer than simply walking a mile as there was a small cave maze in the way. I did have a map, so it would not be too much a problem - just a couple more minutes of walking.

We hiked up the path for a few minutes. The air was unnaturally hot, and I was feeling really stuffy in my Ranger uniform. I really wondered what was wrong the volcano. Was it about to erupt? That would be the worst-case scenario, and I didn't consider that likely. It was a possibility, however. Thankfully, Dragonite was able to fly, meaning both my Trainer and I would be safe from such an occurrence.

At that moment, a Pokemon jumped out of a tree, landing in front of us. It was a red primate with a cream-coloured chest - this was Simisear.

"Simisear!" the Pokemon screeched loudly, wildly jumping up and down.

"Would you like to battle this Simisear and try to catch it?" I asked Tiberius.

As I looked at this Pokemon I couldn't help but think what a pathetic Pokemon I was looking at. It was not worth the time plus, I didn’t want to send out my Pokemon if I didn’t have to. So I made up my mind and looked at my ranger.

“Ranger Shay, I would like to run away. If I can just let it be, I see no point in fighting this Pokemon. This isn’t what I’m looking for and I don’t have the necessary Pokeballs to catch the thing. My Pokemon would KO it in a heart beat, but I don’t want to send out my Pokemon right now. Let’s just run away for now, but I’ll battle if need be.”

I nodded. Tiberius' response had made perfect sense to me.

"Let's try to sneak past it," I replied. We tiptoed to the side of the road, and tried to get past the Simisear. Screeching loudly, the Pokemon shuffled to get in front of us. It growled angrily, and breathed out a wisp of flame.

"It's no use, Simisear isn't going to let us pass. You're going to have to battle it," I told Tiberius.

“So the little guy want’s to battle? Fine by me. Okay then, Swampert, let’s rock.” I grabbed Swampert’s containment unit, and a red light beamed from it. I looked at my blue Pokemon. “Ready?” I said as it gave me a nod.

I chose Swampert to battle because it’s Water and Ground and Simisear was a Fire type and Fire moves are weak against water and ground, so Swampert was a perfect chose for this fight. I was going to use my Empoleon but it was a Water and Steel type and I didn’t want to get him injured. So I would save him for later. Swampert can handle this Pokemon by herself. I was going to use an Earthquake attack but that might cause a rock slide or worse, so a Hydro Pump would be best right now.

“Okay Swampert go let loose your Hydro Pump attack.”
Swampert braced itself, then the blue Pokemon opened its mouth. You could see the water gather in the mouth; building pressure until it blasted out at a high rate.

    Swampert VS Simisear: BP-1

    Ranger John Shay

“So the little guy want’s to battle? Fine by me. Okay then, Swampert, let’s rock.” Tiberius tossed his Swampert's Pokeball into the air, and the blue behemoth burst on to the mountain trail. At this newcomer, Simisear screeched loudly.

"Ready?" Tiberius asked, confirming that his Pokemon was ready for battle. When Swampert nodded, he ordered, "Okay Swampert, go let loose your Hydro Pump attack."

I see - he was going straight to a high risk-high reward move. It wasn't always the greatest strategy, but to me it made sense as he probably would have wanted to end this battle as soon as possible. Swampert did not have a particularly great Special Attack stat, but Simisear were incredibly frail and weak to Water-type moves. Hydro Pump would definitely do a lot of damage to Simisear.

Swampert launched a Hydro Pump at Simisear. A rushing stream of water was expelled from Swampert's mouth, and hit Simisear square in the face.

"Simisear!" the Pokemon screeched, falling over. It was drenched, and the move had clearly taken a lot of health from it. Still, it clearly was not out for the count quite yet.

Getting back up, Simisear decided it was its turn to get on the offensive. Simisear swiftly zipped in front of Swampert's face. I blinked; it had happened so fast I barely had time to register Simisear's move. Swampert had a startled look on her face - she was clearly surprised. That must have been the Astonish move, which based itself off of surprise and speed. It should have a done an inkling of damage to Swampert, though hardly any due to the general weakness of the move. The purpose of the move was not to deal damage, but to surprise the opponent and cause them to flinch.

With Swampert startled, Simisear used their close proximity to his advantage. He burst into flames using the Flame Burst move - a few of the flames licked off on to Swampert for a little bit of damage. However, Simisear's intent with the move was not to damage, but to power up another move. Simisear began spinning, and the Flame Burst began to morph into a powered-up Fire Spin. It was a flaming tornado right in front of Swampert, and the moment it made contact, Swampert could take a decent amount of damage despite two resistances to Fire-type moves. I knew that right now, as Simisear was building up the move, was the time for Tiberius to try and set up a reversal or counterattack of some sort. I wondered what he would do.

Looking at that Fire Spin the best way to stop it would to use a whirlpool attack. It would counter Fire Spin and do damage at the same time, and with any luck, whirlpool would KO the pokemon and end this battle, although that was unlikely. It was worth a try.

“Okay Swampert let’s show it what we are made of. Use your whirlpool attack! Swampert shot water from it mouth and it began to form a twister of water.” Swampert use it’s power and push it forward at the simisear’s Fire Spin. You could feel the power of the whirlpool sucking up all the water Swampert was shooting out of her mouth giving it more power.

    Swampert VS Simisear: BP-2

    Ranger John Shay

I watched Tiberius as he made a quick assessment of the situation. Eventually, he ordered a Whirlpool from his Swampert. The large Pokemon took a deep breath, and formed a swirling twister of water very similar to Simisear's Fire Spin; the only difference was that it was made of water rather than fire.

Swampert launched the torpedo of water at Simisear. The Pokemon ran into it, clearly unafraid due to its Fire Spin cloak. Fire and water collided, and steam hissed into the air, quickly dissipating. The type advantage Water held over Fire seemed to have been enough to compensate for the fact that Simisear's Fire Spin had been boosted by Flame Burst - both tornadoes of energy had negated each other during contact. Simisear was kneeling on the floor. He had been in the epicenter of the Fire Spin, so he must have taken some damage from the Whirlpool during contact. I couldn't seeing it doing too much damage, but not too much was needed, either. I suspected this battle would be over very soon.

Simisear returned to its feet. There was a resilient fury in its eyes - it still wanted to fight. He leapt on Swampert, and the surprised Pokemon could only watch in fear as Simisear landed on his head and began clawing it vigorously. However, Simisear was only able to get in three swipes before the much larger Swampert managed to shake the Pokemon off. Due to Swampert's natural bulk, it seemed she had not taken too much damage from the move.

I watched to see what Tiberius would respond with. Simisear was in KO range, and regardless of what happened, this battle was nearing its conclusion.

I look into it’s eye’s and I could see that simisear was at it’s end. So it was time to finish this battle and move on.

“Okay Swampert finish it off with a Muddy Water attack!”
Swampert looked at the pokemon with a fire in her eyes. I could see that Swampert was ready to end this battle right now! She took a deep breath gathering water in it’s mouth, building pressure up, then shot it out of the water and began to make a tsunami like wave. As the water gathered the wave got bigger until Swampert amassed all the water then push forward the wave of water at simisear.

Tiberius' eyes got big. It was clear he realized that he could end the battle now.

"Okay, Swampert, finish it off with a Muddy Water attack!"

Swampert nodded, eyeing her opponent for what was most likely the last time in this battle. She took a deep breath, preparing the Muddy Water. Simisear took this as an opening to attack, and rushed Swampert. Its fist erupted into flames, and the Pokemon dashed towards Swampert, hoping to connect with the Fire Punch.

An admirable last-ditch attempt, but it was hopeless. Swampert expelled her Muddy Water, and a large wave of murky brown water caught Simisear several feet away from Swampert. The Pokemon was swamped and washed to the side of the path by the move.

"Good job, Tiberius," I congratuled Tiberius. "Let's move on. We're not quite at the caves yet.

Swampert did great, but next time I was going to use my Tyranitar; he could take more damage than Swampert and he would be better against the Fire pokemon. Swampert took some nice damage for that Simisear and the last thing I needed was for her faint. So I was going to have be more careful about the Pokemon I chose to fight.

“Good job Swampert. Now that is over with, let’s keep moving. Return," Tiberius said, returning Swampert to her Pokeball.

We continued making our way towards the caves. The air was getting really hot, even for the normally hot Mount Deckbi area. This was quite unnatural, and I was sweating underneath all of my Ranger gear. My heart sunk as I realized the caves would be even hotter with no open air - rather, there would be even more hot air coming straight from the adjacent volcano. In its current state, the temperatures would be absolute overkill. I sighed.

As we made our way along the path, I heard a small scratching noise. I halted immediately, and looked for the source. It sounded like a coin scraping against a scratch-to-win card.

There. It was a small Aron sharpening its claws against a small boulder. The diminutive Steel/Rock-type Pokemon noticed us staring at it, and turned around.

"Aron?" it asked innocently, wondering what was going on.

"Tiberius, do you want to battle this Aron?" I asked my Trainer.

As we were walking Ranger shay heard a scraping noise. When he looked to see what it was, he found a little Pokemon. It was an Aron sharpening its claws on a rock. Ranger Shay asked me if I wanted to battle it. Aron was good a Pokemon but I was looking for three different Pokemon and Aron was not one of them, so it was going to have to wait.

“I don’t want to fight this Pokemon, but if I have to I will. If we can, let’s try to sneak pass this Pokemon first. And it’s not one of the Pokemon I’m looking for. Aron is a good Pokemon but I have no use for it.”

I nodded, understanding perfectly. Looking at Aron carefully, I took a step along the path, bringing me closer to it as well. It showed no signs of aggression. I continued to tip-toe my way past the wild Pokemon, motioning for Tiberius to follow closely.

"Aron," the Pokemon muttered before turning around and resuming the sharpening of its claws when it realized we meant no harm.

"Alright, it seems it'll let us past without a fight," I said to Tiberius, relaxing a little. As we continued walking along the path, I realized something. "Oh, we should be at the caves very soon. There are a couple interesting species of Pokemon that reside in the caves of Mount Deckbi. You may find something that catches your eye."

After a few minutes of walking, we did indeed end up at the entrance of the caves. However, we couldn't enter quite yet - there was a Pokemon in the way.

"Rapidash!" the Fire Horse Pokemon announced loudly, clearly confident in its abilities as a battler. It seemed to want to battle with Tiberius.

"Tiberius, do you want to battle this Rapidash?" I asked my Trainer.

Looking at this Pokemon I could tell it would not go down easy; I could send my Tyranitar out and that would be an easy fight for him, but I had a Pokedoll still. And, I would not have to battle if I used it, that way I could enter the cave and I could start looking for Pokemon I want. So battle it or throw a Pokedoll at it were the choices I had. One Pokedoll, thats all I have right now. Use it now or later. Well, I made up my mind, the Pokedoll it is. I reached in to my bag and grabbed the little pink Pokedoll.

“Okay let see how you like this.” I threw the little Pokedoll at the Rapidash

Tiberius eyed the Rapidash, and shook its head.

"Let's see how you like this..." he said, dropping a Pokedoll in front of him. The Rapidash eyed the distractingly cute object with interest, and I motioned for Tiberius to quietly follow me as we stealthily skirted around the distracted Rapidash.

We quickly entered the cave, leaving Rapidash with the Pokedoll. It was dark in here, and very hot. I took out a lantern, and held it up, illuminating the rocky tunnel. A Pokemon with Flash was much more effective, but my Dragonite did not know it nor did any of Tiberius' Pokemon, according to his data file. Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do about the heat. It definitely did not help that the volcano this tunnel was connected to was in such a distressed state.

We began hiking through the caves. In the beginning, it was a straightfoward path. However, we quickly arrived at a fork in the path.

"Which way do you want to..." I trailed off. I was distracted by a rock by the cave wall that seemed to be moving. Suddenly, its eyes opened, confirming my suspicions.

"Geodude!" the Pokemon yelled, swinging its fists with vigor.

"Do you want to battle this Geodude?" I asked Tiberius.

I dropped the Pokedoll on the ground the Pokemon was distracted by it. Ranger Shay and I quietiy moved passed Rapidash. We entered the cave and inside it felt like a furnace. I couldn’t see at all as darkness filled the cave. Ranger shay took out a lantern to light the way. The path led straightforward until we came to a fork on the path. My Ranger asked me which way did I want to go. I was about say which path I wanted to take when Ranger Shay walked off. I looked at him, he was staring at something. When I walked over see to what it was, I heard the voice of a Geodude. My Ranger asked me if I wanted to battle the Pokemon.

“Yes I do it’s about time we found a good Pokemon. Okay, let’s go Swampert.” I reached on the right side of my belt and grabbed Swampert’s Pokeball and threw in to the air. A red light beamed from the ball as Swampert appeared in front of me. “Okay, Swampert, let’s do this. Use your Water Gun attack!” Swampert opened it’s mouth and a burst of water shot from her at the Geodude.

    BP-1: Swampert VS Geodude

    Ranger John Shay

    OOC: Gender?

"Yes I do. It’s about time we found a good Pokemon. Okay, let’s go Swampert." Tiberius said, tossing a Pokeball. His Swampert appeared in a flash of white light. "Okay, Swampert, let’s do this. Use your Water Gun attack!"

Swampert nodded. A jet of water was launched out of Swampert's move, and soaked Geodude. The Pokemon cried loudly in distaste. As a Rock/Ground-type Pokemon, it had a natural hatred towards Water-type moves.

Geodude quickly retained its composure. Though Water Gun had definitely taken away a noticeable chunk of its health, it was clear that this Pokemon was a serious competitor - one who would not show any signs of weakness.

"Geodude!" the Pokemon shouted vigorously. It hopped up, then started spinning rapidly. It rolled towards Swampert, and Tiberius' Pokemon was too slow to avoid the move. Geodude crashed into Swampert, and Swampert dropped to a knee.

Fortunately, due to Swampert's natural bulk, the attack had not hurt her too much - it was more surprise than anything else. However, I noticed Geodude had swerved around, and was rolling towards Swampert once again, this time with added velocity.

I knew Geodude was using Rollout, and Rollout was a move that accumulated power the longer it was maintained by adding more and more velocity over time. If Geodude could get on a roll (excuse the pun), it would be able to actually do quite a bit of damage to Swampert despite being in a disadvantage in almost every way imaginable. It was in Tiberius' best interests to stop Geodude before that happnened.

I could see that Geodude was not going to make this easy for me. I didn’t want to hurt Geodude too much and my Water Gun attack might KO the Pokemon; so that attack was out. But a Rock Tomb attack might do the trick, and with some luck it just might stop the Rollout attack. Now the question was: how do use Rock Tomb with out causing a cave-in? That was the real trick. My Rock Tomb would slow it down and might stop it, but I had a move that was guaranteed to stop it in it’s tracks. Swampert’s Protect move will stop Swampert from taking any damage.

“Okay, Swampert, use Protect to shield yourself from Geodude’s Rollout attack!”

Swampert gave me a nod then, Swampert’s eye’s begin to glow bright green as a shield of green energy surrounded Swampert. The light from the energy lit up the cave.
