I chuckled at Ryan’s response at being promoted to Gym Leader again, wondering why the League Committee hadn’t just sent both messages at once or combined them into one. Either way it was clearly welcome news, made obvious when the Trainer grabbed me in an unexpected hug. He quickly released me when he realized what he was doing, focusing back on the battle as I bit back another laugh, not wanting to make him embarrassed. Instead I, too, turned my attention back to the battle taking place before us.

Sawsbuck seemed to be having a hard time getting her legs to work like they should, so by the time Ryan had pulled Maggie from battle and sent his Alakazam, she was only just starting to get to her hooves. When she finally managed to get upright, she was clearly surprised to see an Alakazam before her. Of course, what she didn’t know was that this was a simple Substitute, nothing more substantial than a fragile piece of glass. One hit and the Substitute would be doomed, but it would be the Substitute that took the blow instead of Ryan’s Pokemon.

Alonso himself had taken up position behind his Sub, hidden behind it and capable of setting up while his Substitute absorbed whatever Sawsbuck was going to throw at it. We didn’t have to wait long to see what that was going to be, because by now the Pokemon had realized Alonso’s Substitute was completely immobile. Deciding her foe was hardly a threat if it was just standing there, the deer snorted forcefully before lowering her head and leaping into a head-on charge. A greenish sheen covered her horns as she ran, and little tendrils of lime-colored energy trailed off from them as she powered up a Megahorn.

“She’s moving pretty quickly,” I commented, watching as Sawsbuck barreled towards Alonso and his Substitute. “She’s gonna be at that Sub in no time.”

Ryan smiled grimly as the Sawsbuck began its Megahorn attack. He was ready and Alonso had worked his way into Ryan’s head. No verbal communication would be needed from this point forward, Ryan and Alonso would work as one, with Ryan having some limited access to Alonso’s extreme intelligence as well as the battle experience of both parties.

Everything could now work perfectly, every motion in tandem. Alonso was Ryan’s first Pokémon, so they knew each other well and had a very strong bond, so much so that Ryan wasn’t even sure which of them was hiding behind a Substitute and which was stepping back from the battle slightly.

Together, they knew that the Substitute had been set up to allow this connection, but the Sawsbuck still hadn’t broken it, which gave them even more of a chance to power themselves up for battle.

Together, though it was Alonso doing all the work and providing all the power, they reached their minds out to touch the Sawsbuck, subtly egging it on, putting thoughts into its head that would make it angry and more likely to try and attack. The Taunting seemed to take forever, each Taunt increasing their chance of success, but, just milliseconds after they had begun, the Sawsbuck violently ejected them from its mind.

They didn’t know if they had succeeded and wouldn’t until the Sawsbuck used something the Taunt should forbid, if they had succeeded, they would never be one-hundred percent sure.

Sawsbuck reached Alonso’s Substitute and slammed her glowing, crackling horns into it with such force that it quite literally blew apart. Fragments of the doll flew away before the energy that had formed the doll fizzled out. Even though the Substitute had been rather frail and Sawsbuck’s Megahorn a vicious blow, the doll effectively halted the deer’s forward momentum, preventing her from charging into Alonso.

Now she glared at her foe with a renewed anger, foam flecking her mouth as she bleated shrilly. For a moment I was confused by this sudden increase in rage, but then realized that at some point, Alonso must have used a Taunt on Sawsbuck. That would explain the Pokemon’s jump in aggressiveness, and while making her so frenzied could make it easier to attack, it would also make her a much more dangerous foe. Any enraged Pokemon was a threat, despite the fact that they tended to act so thoughtlessly that they practically battled themselves. Ryan would need to be especially careful now, since Alakazam in general had poor Defensive abilities. This was even more true since Sawbuck already had a boost in her Attack.

Sawsbuck took a few steps back, never once looking away from Alonso as her hooves dug deep furrows into the soft ground. Whatever she was planning, it looked like she wanted to convey it would be something very unpleasant. Further and further away she moved, slowly backing up until there was a fair amount of space between her and her opponent. Then, without warning, she lunged into a head-on charge, her legs a blur as she barreled forward. A glow then encased her, starting at her wide muzzle and spreading down the rest of her body until she was a giant speeding flash of dazzling white. This was a Double-Edge attack, a ferocious attack that would deal insane damage to both battlers if it struck. Sawsbuck must have been infuriated indeed to choose a move like this, and I could only hope Ryan reacted in time to prevent disaster.

Ryan was tempted to let the Double Edge hit, but two things stopped him.

One, he was worried that the recoil from this powerful attack would take the Sawsbuck down too, and that was frankly unacceptable.

More importantly, he didn’t want Alonso feeling the pain of that attack hitting, he wasn’t cruel, and, being mind linked as they were, he would feel the pain too.

Ryan was also starting to wonder if Alonso was the best of his Pokémon to be using, though they were firm friends, Alonso had a problem in this situation that most Alakazam would have, they were geared to hit hard and fast, not stall for time. Not that Alonso didn’t have plenty of experience doing both in his time.

Physical attacks were also an option for doing reduced damage as was using Toxic, but that had the major disadvantage of limiting the time available to actually make the capture before the target fainted, and the last thing Ryan wanted to do was knock this beautiful specimen of a Sawsbuck out.

He had made some progress on the Pokémon’s personality as well, it was aggressive, as he’d worked out rather quickly, it was reckless in its attempts to hurt Ryan’s Pokémon. He could only conclude it was of a Reckless nature.

He couldn’t be sure but it did seem logical

Ryan had long since stopped being amazed at how fast his thought processes were when linked to Alonso, it was almost as if thinking was a free action, maybe talking was too.

The Double Edge was starting to get close now though and if Alonso didn’t do something soon, it could be game over as far as he was concerned but Ryan and Alonso had a valid plan.

Just as the Sawsbuck was about to hit, there was an audible pop, and Alonso simply wasn’t there any more, he had appeared behind the Sawsbuck, who ever said Teleport wasn’t useful!

Now Alonso had to have the Sawsbuck on the back foot. It was getting fairly close to time to unleash and potentially deal a fair amount of damage to the Sawsbuck, but first, Ryan and Alonso, were having a good time watching the Sawsbuck try and stop after that reckless charge.

No words were spoken by Ryan as Sawsbuck bore down on his Pokemon; just when it seemed the Double-Edge would strike its target, Alonso vanished from sight, reappearing behind Sawsbuck thanks to a Teleport. Sawsbuck’s ears twitched in the direction of the faint but audible pop that signaled Alonso’s return from that space between space, and without missing a beat the deer dug her hooves into the ground as she heaved her body to the left, using her momentum to help her abrupt change in direction.

“Wow, she’s so ticked she wasn’t even surprised by Alonso vanishing,” I commented, somewhat awed by Sawsbuck’s level of anger. “Most Pokemon are a startled, even just a little, when their foe suddenly disappears like that. I guess that’s what happens when such an aggressive Pokemon is Taunted. To be honest I’ve never seen a Sawsbuck attack so fiercely, even males in rut. I’ll have to make a note of it when we’re done here, make sure there’s nothing that might be making Pokemon acutely aggressive. Something in the grass maybe…” I then smiled, a little sheepishly, and chuckled a bit. “Oh, sorry about that. I got a bit distracted. Ranger duties and all…”

I turned back to the battle just in time to see Sawsbuck gathering herself for a powerful leap towards Alonso, only to lose sight of her a second later. When she reappeared she was behind Alonso, as if she had materialized out of his shadow. It was actually just a Faint Attack, though, an attack that let the user move at super-high speed to strike the foe before they could react. Sawsbuck ruined the sneak attack with a crazed bleat as she leapt forward, but just as she started to jump, I saw the muscles in her body ripple under her pelt. Paralysis had struck again, it appeared.

Sawsbuck’s initial leap carried her forward, but the abrupt seizure of her muscles caused her aim to skew towards the left. Her right shoulder caught Alonso’s left side as the deer flew by him, the awkward angle knocking them away from each other. Sawsbuck, by some miracle, managed to land on her hooves instead of her face, though it didn’t last long and she quickly toppled over. It was both amusing and just a little sad to watch the deer repeatedly falling over; more funny than sad really, since Pokemon are such hardy creatures and a little bit of falling would hardly cause any significant harm.

The Sawsbuck seemed unsurprised by Alonso disappearing, Ryan on the other hand, was surprised by the Sawsbuck being unsurprised. The Sawsbuck turned sharply and fiercely, worrying Ryan as he really did not want that Double Edge attack to hit, the results would have been disastrous.

Thankfully, the Sawsbuck turned and disappeared for a second, phasing through Alonso. Thankful however, was a relative term. The attack the enraged Sawsbuck had picked just happened to be a super effective Feint Attack, Alonso did not have the physicality to take an attack like that regularly.

Again thankfully, and this time not relatively thankfully, the Sawsbuck was again hindered by its paralysis and turned slightly as it leaped at Alonso and so only struck a glancing blow.

Ryan watched in disappointment as the Sawsbuck spectacularly failed to land flat on its face, at first anyway. Its hooves hit the ground and it slowed, stumbling and finally falling though it had managed to wipe off much of its speed.

Ryan knew that the Sawsbuck wouldn’t have hurt itself to much doing that, but he had also noticed that the Sawsbuck, whilst enraged, was rather astute, maybe too astute. There was a rather simple (and perhaps rather obvious) solution to this problem however.

A confused Pokémon is never as astute as one with a clear mind, maybe that was an obvious statement but it bore noting for Ryan and Alonso as they once again reached out into the Sawsbuck’s mind using the immense power of Alonso’s mind.

The Confusion attack would definitely hurt and hopefully confuse the Sawsbuck, but something else it would do was distract the Sawsbuck, essential as Ryan’s hand had slipped into his left pocket and came out holding a shiny new Super Ball.

Ryan hoped the slightly increased catch rate of the Super Ball might work where Ryan highly doubted that a regular Park Ball had a snowball’s chance in hell, as the saying went.

Ryan’s arm arced forward, throwing the Super Ball just as Alonso entered the mind of the Sawsbuck, the damage would be dealt before the ball arrived, if indeed the Sawsbuck didn’t manage to worm its way out, but either way, it wouldn’t have time to recover from the attack when the Super Ball hit it in the left flank.

Ryan squeezed his eyes shut, hoping that he would succeed in a rather unlikely early capture of the Sawsbuck, sure he had been battling it just long enough to have a “reasonable” chance, though many people wouldn’t agree with his definition of the word reasonable, any slight chance would do for Ryan.

A faint purple haze surrounded Alonso’s spoons a few moments after Sawsbuck’s Faint Attack; the Alakazam was attempting a Confusion attack, it seemed. On the ground, Sawsbuck started to twitch as her body regained mobility from the momentary paralysis that had gripped her. She snorted loudly as she struggled to stand, her eyes rolling as the mental assault on her psyche continued.

She had no chance to try and force Alonso’s psionic presence from her mind or attempt a counter-attack, though; mere seconds after his Alakazam started his attack, Ryan fished out a Super Ball and chucked it at the dazed Sawsbuck. While it was obvious she was starting to lag, I honestly didn’t think she would be ready for capture just yet. After all, she was so focused on beating Alonso up that she probably wouldn’t be ready for capture until she was close to fainting.

The Super Ball struck the deer’s body and popped open, drawing her in and cutting off her surprised (or maybe irritated) bleat as it then snapped shut and fell to the ground. It rocked vigorously for a few moments, and then, much to my surprise, it fell still. I had a feeling that Sawsbuck’s paralysis might have somehow influenced her again, rendering her incapable of escaping the Ball.

For a moment I simply blinked at the Super Ball, too shocked to collect it. Regalia took care of that for me, levitating the orb over to me with a sound akin to a chuckle. I peered at him as I grabbed the Ball from midair, placing it with the one containing the Girafarig Ryan had caught before I’d taken over his run.

“I’ve gotta admit, I wasn’t expecting a capture there,” I told the Trainer afterward. “Sawsbuck was a lively one; I think the only thing that kept her from breaking out of that Ball was her paralysis. Seems Lady Luck showed you some serious favor.” I grinned at the young man then and waved aimlessly, indicating the area we were in. “So, what do you wanna do now?”

Ryan watched intently as the Super Ball struck the Sawsbuck on the flank, not really expecting much. The Pokémon was quickly sucked into the ball, which promptly fell to the ground and rocked back and forth. As the rocking stopped, Ryan’s jaw dropped, he had actually captured the Sawsbuck, much earlier than he had expected.

Ryan leaped for joy as Sara also expressed her surprise at the early capture.

“I’ve gotta admit, I wasn’t expecting a capture there.” The surprise was evident in Sara’s voice.

Even as Sara asked Ryan what he was planning to do next, Ryan was leaning down to pick up the forgotten Pokeplayer, He inserted another Feroseed disk an pressed play, the cries reaching out around the entire surrounding area.

Ryan wasted no time making use of his PokePlayer, putting a Disc inside it and hitting the Play button. A strange clicking-buzz noise started to emit from the device’s speakers; a Ferroseed Voice Disc, it seemed. The clicking echoed around us for several moments, but there was no response to it. At least, not from the Pokemon Ryan was apparently looking to encounter.

A Bulbasaur tentatively poked its head from the grass a few feet away, peering around before cautiously moving onto the path. It looked ready to bolt at the smallest thing; whether it was worried it might encounter a Ferroseed or was afraid because of the Sawsbuck that had until recently been rampaging about was unknown, but it was definitely on high alert. Weird though, it either overlooked us entirely or didn’t care that there were humans around.

“Hmmmm, well, Venusaur are pretty good now that it’s been discovered they have the Chlorophyll Ability,” I said, though I wasn’t certain if Ryan would want to settle for something like a Bulbasaur.

Ryan watched as the Bulbasaur poked its head into the open, this was not exactly what he had been after. Actually, it was nothing like what he was after, there were shops that bred and sold Bulbasaur, they weren’t even rare enough to auction off.

Ryan thought for about 10 seconds before reaching into his back pocket and handing Sara a nice crisp bank note. That $500 would be enough to buy a Pokedoll, which Ryan was sure sara would throw at the Bulbasaur whilst he reached down to once again press play on the Pokeplayer, the Ferroseed cries echoing through the area.

Sara threw the Pokedoll as Ryan picked up his Pokeplayer and began to walk away.

It seemed Ryan wasn’t interested in a Bulbasaur, purchasing a PokeDoll to distract the little Pokemon and playing his PokePlayer once more. Bulbasaur, startled by the noise, grabbed the PokeDoll in its mouth and scampered off with it.

Ryan started to walk off as the Ferroseed cry played from the speakers of the PokePlayer, but he didn’t get far before something darted from the grass on the left side of the path. It was a Treecko, and hot on its heels was a Servine. The Treecko managed to avoid Ryan’s shoe as he stepped forward, but Servine wasn’t quite as lucky. It was sent tumbling by the force of Ryan’s shoe smacking into its head; with an angered hiss, the serpent hastily straightened itself out and vanished back into the grass. Treecko, hearing the Servine’s wrath, turned in time to see it fleeing back into the foliage.

For a moment it seemed as though Treecko would go its own way as well, but apparently it didn’t like the idea of potentially running into another predator. It started to follow Ryan before jumping onto the back of his right leg, clinging as if for dear life. It was kind of cute, but it was hard to say if Ryan felt the same way.

“You have a cling-on,” I told the young man jokingly as Treecko looked over at me, its tail twitching madly as it held tight to Ryan’s pants.

Ryan watched in disappointment as the Treeko and Servine came running into the open, here he had one of those fabled double encounters, and both Pokémon were things that could easily be bought in a shop.

But know the Treeko had jumped on his leg in a rather amusing manner, he could see himself catching this one just for it’s antics, if he didn’t scare it off. It was timid and shaking, but obviously not threatened by Ryan, which mildly surprised him.

Or maybe it was confident enough to take a risk and take refuge with a larger creature, he’d only know if he managed to befriend it, which would take a fair amount of effort and he wasn’t going to give up his search for a Ferroseed or Durant either.

He reached down slowly to gently pet the Treeko cooing, “Who’s a cute little girl.”

He really hoped he didn’t have it wrong and he wasn’t about to find out that he was patting a male, not that he could see any anatomical signs that he was.

As he was petting the Treeko, he subtly slipped his hand out to press the play button on his Pokeplayer, no point in accidently setting encountering his final Pokémon for this run if that wasn’t playing to increase his chances.

He just hoped that the clicking sounds of a Ferroseed didn’t scare the Treeko off.

The Ferroseed Disc played once again as Ryan patted Treecko’s head. The little lizard seemed to enjoy the attention, not at all perturbed by the sound of the Disc. She appeared more than happy to simply cling to his leg, where she was relatively safe from the various snakes and predatory Pokemon that roamed the Botanic Garden.

There was no luck for the Ferroseed sadly, but something else seemed attracted by the sound. I heard a piercing shriek from above us and looked up in time to see a large shape plummeting towards us; it pulled out of its dive at the last moment, sending a wash of air over us. As the shape slowed down and began to circle our heads, it was revealed to be a Staraptor. The raptor shrieked again as it peered down at us, clearly searching for the Ferroseed it had thought it heard. Most likely it was searching for a meal; Staraptor had tough beaks that let them punch through the steel exoskeletons of Pokemon like Ferroseed with ease.

“Feel up to catching a Staraptor?” I asked as the bird continued to circle above us.

It looked like it was time to leave the park for Ryan, he was out of encounters and didn't have anything decent available for a capture, He gently peeled the Treeko off of his leg and waved at the staraptor, he then turned to Sara and said, "That's it for me, I'll be back but for now I'll take the Girafarig and the Sawsbuck as well as the cash for those photo's, thanks for being an awesome Ranger."

Ryan decided against battling Staraptor, and the bird eventually flew off when it realized there were no Ferroseed around. Ryan then proceeded to carefully pull Treecko off his leg; the little lizard obviously had no intention of going back into the grass and jumped onto me, scurrying up to perch on my shoulder as it peered around uneasily. Apparently, having been chased by a Servine and then having a Staraptor overhead must have made the Pokemon decide staying out here was a bad idea. It was fine; it could stay in the Ranger Outpost for a few days, but since it was still Wild it would eventually get cabin fever and return to its natural habitat.

"That's it for me, I'll be back but for now I'll take the Girafarig and the Sawsbuck as well as the cash for those photos, thanks for being an awesome Ranger,” Ryan said, and I grinned a little as Regalia flew closer, preparing to take us back to the Outpost.

“You’re more than welcome. Hopefully you enjoyed the visit and will be able to catch even better stuff next time you come. Now let’s get back to the Outpost so we can pay you for those pictures and register your new Pokemon.”
