"Hey, I assume you're Domonic Stone?" Ryan asked. "You wouldn't happen to have a pokedoll would you?"

I nodded, affirming both questions and handed him a small, pink Pokemon doll in exchange for $500. Then, he threw the doll at the Zigzagoon and recalled his Metagross into its Pokeball. He shrugged as we watched the small brown Pokemon scamper back into the exotic underbrush with the little pink ball of fuzz in its teeth.

"Sorry about that," he explained. "I got into that fight whilst I was waiting for you, didnt really want to catch it and I didn't want to run either, worried that you'd never find me."

I shrugged back. There was no need to tell him that there was a GPS system automatically attached to the clothing of everyone who stepped through the doors at the Docks. They fell off after passing through the doors a second time, which prevented the mechanical bug from tracking the person wherever they went. In other words, we always knew where he was as long as he was in the Park.

"It's fine," I replied. "Just try not to get into too much trouble. Let's move along to find that Durant, shall we?"

Then, Ryan pressed the button on the Pokeplayer and I led him down the path that led to the Durant hills. Before we got there, however, I noticed a plant bulb alongside the path moving. I motioned for Ryan to stop as the bulb burst out of the earth, revealing a green reptilian Pokemon. Then, it wandered onto the path and looked at us questioningly.

"Hey look," I said to the Trainer. "That's a Bulbasaur. Want to catch it?"

Did Ryan want to catch a bulbasaur, not really.

For that reason he shook his head and said, "I would rather throw a pokedoll at it, here is 500 pokedollers."

Domonic handed over the pokedoll and then Ryan threw it at the bulbasaur, he then began to walk away.

His next action was an unusual one for a pokemon trainer, he sat down and prayed to his Lord Jesus Christ that the next pokemon he encountered would be a Durant.

When Ryan had finished praying, he pressed play for his last play of this particular durant voice disk.

This run, truthfully hadn't been very eventful. Aside from the instance where Ragnorok was taken out of action and the earlier Girafarig, there hadn't even been any battles. As Ryan finished asking for another Pokedoll, I reluctantly handed one over. The Trainer then tossed it at the Bulbasaur and inserted the disc into the Pokeplayer for the fifth and final time that that particular disc could stand. But, before hitting the play button, Ryan did something strange and unexpected.

He knelt down and began to pray. While I wasn't a very spiritual person, I did catch that he really, really wanted to encounter that Durant. I also wanted him to find his quarry Pokemon and initiate a battle, which would liven up this place. I'd also get a chance at seeing some new Pokemon. I hadn't been to the Gardens recently and there had been some new Pokemon that migrated in recently. Then, interrupting me from my thoughts, Ryan pressed the play button. A cacophony of ant-like noises rang out of the machine, calling for a Durant. As the ant calls wound to a close, there were audible cracking noises intertwined with the calls. The scratching noises that were Durant cries gradually faded before stopping altogether with a final smashing sound. Ryan shook the Pokeplayer a little and shattered pieces of the voice disk fell out and onto his hand. I looked around, waiting for a Pokemon to show itself. Even if it wasn't a Durant, something would have to have heard the calls.

Suddenly, I saw an answer. Rather, the answer flung itself at us first and then I saw it. It was a Shelmet and it had just latched its sticky tongue-like face, that it kept inside its shell most of the time, on Ryan's face. It also didn't seem to want to let go.

"Ryan, that's a Shelmet on your face," I said, barely containing a grin. "It looks like it wants to battle you."

actually, i caught the girafarig (and stated it was female)
    ------------------------------------

Ryan couldn’t see a thing; he was blind, what was happening? He was starting to panic, spinning around, he tried to scream but there was something in his mouth. Come to think of it, there was something wet a sticky all over his face, and his head weighed more than it should have.

It was the calm, reassuring voice of Domonic Stone that provided the answer; apparently Ryan had a Shelmet stuck to his face. This was an unusual situation, one that the Canalave City Gym Leader had never found himself in before. New experiences were always good, and new experiences involving Pokémon were getting rarer and rarer for the seasoned Gym Leader.

Ryan lifted his hands till he found the Shelmet’s shell and began to pull. With a slow, sickening squelch, the Shelmet came free.

Sick of not actually battling on this park run, and once again faced with a Pokémon that could easily be purchased from a shop, Ryan decided it was time to leave the little shell that had attached to his face either in a heap, or in a Pokeball.

Reaching down into the right hand pocket of his jeans, Ryan pulled out a Pokeball with a stylised “b” on the white portion, the letter seemed to glow and flicker like a fire would. Pressing the release button, Ryan called out a very clichéd, “Blaziken, I choose you.”

A six foot tall kung-fu chicken appeared in front of Ryan, who said, “Flamethrower, now!”

The chicken took a deep breath, the exhaled sharply, sending a thin, searing hot beam of fire directly at the Shelmet, Ryan just prayed it wouldn’t dodge.

I took a moment to look over my new Trainer’s papers as I let Regalia out of his PokeBall, frowning at the number of times the young man had already gone through Ranger switches. It was extremely rare for someone to go through so many Rangers in one visit, but things come up occasionally that require such things. Still, I intended to be the last Ranger Ryan had to put up with for the remainder of his current trip; having so many different Rangers could be jarring to a person and throw them off their game.

I tossed the papers on the receptionist desk before putting my hand on Regalia’s stomach. The Sigilyph hummed gently as he tapped into my mind, pulling an image of our destination from my thoughts and focusing his Psychic powers. Then, with the sound of a car backfiring in the distance, we Teleported from the Ranger Outpost at the Docks to somewhere roughly near the middle of the Botanic Gardens. It was then only a few minutes of following the GPS of Ryan’s current Ranger to their location. I came upon the scene as my Trainer-to-be pulled a Shelmet from his face and tossed it to the ground. As the young man released a Blaziken, I walked to the other Ranger and quietly informed him of the personal matter he was being called away for. Regalia graciously Teleported the Ranger back to the Outpost, then reappeared to hover above my head a few moments later.

By this time, Ryan had commanded his Blaziken to use a Flamethrower attack. By the irritated look on Ryan’s face and the startled shock in Shelmet’s expression, this didn’t seem to be a battle to obtain a new teammate. Rather, Ryan seemed agitated by something, though what it was I had no idea.

Shelmet’s surprise rooted it to the ground for several precious moments, but then it snapped out of its daze and hastily hopped to the left. It moved a bit too slowly, though, and the left edge of its body was caught by the Flamethrower. Giving a strange buzzing trill of pain, Shelmet faced Blaziken and glared at him balefully. As it stared, a red haze of energy started to rise from it, condensing in a visible cloud above the small insect. With another trill, this one of anger, Shelmet clamped its shell closed and the wave of energy shot towards Blaziken. The fowl cried out in alarm as he felt his energy draining away; even though it has lost a chunk of HP from the Flamethrower it had taken, Shelmet had still had quite a fair amount of health remaining. Thus, the Final Gambit proved to be rather unfortunate for Blaziken, who retreated a few steps from the now-still insect with wary eyes.

“Well then,” I said a moment later, walking up to the young man and offering a hand, “now that that’s over, I guess now’s the time to introduce myself. I’m Trainer Sara, your new and hopefully last Ranger for the rest of your trip.” I then glanced at the fainted Shelmet, feeling a pang of sympathy for the poor little thing. “Doesn’t look like that little guy is going to be doing much else for a while. Shall we move on or would you like to rest for a moment first?”

Ryan noticed the discussion between Domonic and the new girl out of the corner of his eye, but right now, that wasn’t very important. What was important was the wonderful blast of fire coming from Blazer’s mouth. It was warm and toasty behind Blazer and Ryan was enjoying the heat though it didn’t really look like the Shelmet shared his opinion on the matter.

The Shelmet was preparing to do something, and that something didn’t look good to Ryan, he knew that red haze couldn’t be good, even if he didn’t actually know what it was. There were so many new techniques appearing with these new Pokémon, even some of his beloved friends were showing these new techniques.

The red haze condensed into a small cloud and a wave of energy shot between the two Pokémon. Blazer staggered, hurt, but he came off much better than the Shelmet, who fell over unconscious on the ground, much to Ryan’s relief.

A moment later, the new trainer that had arrived on the scene walked over to him, “Well then” she said, extending her hand, “now that that’s over, I guess now’s the time to introduce myself. I’m Trainer Sara, your new and hopefully last Ranger for the rest of your trip.”

Ryan smiled and took the proffered hand, “Nice to meet you, the names Ryan, though I’m sure your notes already tell you that. I’m tossing up on whether I should heal Blazer or not, I mean I only have limited resources and I haven’t really got all that long left in here, still I suppose it can’t hurt and he is here for a purpose.”

With that, Ryan dug around in his backpack for a while, finally pulling out a spray canister with the words “Max Potion” written on the side in large letters and the words “ACME PokeMart Inc.” underneath in smaller letters.

The Blaziken, seeing this ran over to Ryan, looking at him pleadingly. Ryan laughed and sprayed the soothing potion on his friends wounds. Then he rubbed Blazer playfully on the head.

The next Item on Ryan’s agenda was going to be his Pokeplayer but as he picked it up, a pidgey landed on the ground in front of him bearing a letter. Ryan picked up the letter and slowly read it aloud, “We regret to inform you that your position as the leader of Canalave Gym has been revoked, enjoy your day, Sinnoh Gym Authority.”

Ryan was shocked, maybe he was spending too much time in the park? Well, he’d argue his case later. Right now, it was mildly more important that he press play on the Pokeplayer and get that Durant disc spinning, despite the fact it no longer had a vital spot on his line up to fill, so with an air of trepidation and another silent prayer, Ryan pressed play.

I was pleased when Ryan opted to heal his Pokemon before moving on, considering that the Blaziken had taken a pretty big hit to his HP from Shelmet’s Final Gambit. Once the Max Potion bottle was empty, I collected it from Ryan and stashed it in my bag to recycle it later. As I did that, a Pidgey came flying into view, a letter clamped in its talons. It landed in front of Ryan, depositing the letter before flying off. Regalia called a farewell to the fellow Flying Pokemon as Ryan retrieved the letter and slowly read its contents aloud.

“We regret to inform you that your position as the leader of Canalave Gym has been revoked, enjoy your day, Sinnoh Gym Authority.” He then paused, a look of surprise crossing his features. I remained silent on the matter; a friend of mine was the Gym Leader of Ecruteak, and I knew how protective a Leader could become of their Gym. I didn’t know the situation and therefore decided not to comment on it and possibly stoke any unpleasant emotions about the whole thing. As it was, Ryan seemed to focus on finishing his Park run, pressing the Play button on his PokePlayer. The chittering cry of a Durant filled the air, echoing into the distance before the sound vanished. No Durant came to investigate, but the sound did startle a nearby Sawsbuck. Snorting loudly, the deer jerked its head up from where it had been grazing and faced up, one ear twisting back while the other was aimed in our direction. This one was in its Spring Form, its rich chocolate coat still holding tufts of loose hair that were leftovers of its Winter Form. Pink buds and blossoms decorated its pronged horns, which filled the air with a very faint but pleasant aroma. It clearly wasn’t what Ryan was after, but certain Sawsbuck were known to have a very rare Ability for their species. Serene Grace was an Ability that made additional effects more likely to happen, and many Trainers had tried to obtain a Sawsbuck with this special Ability once it was known they sometimes carried it.

“Well, if you’ve ever wanted a Sawsbuck, now is probably one of the best chances you’re going to have of catching one. Feel like giving it a go?” As I asked, the PokePlayer auto-ejected the Durant Voice Disc, which was cracked neatly down the middle. Apparently it had reached it maximum number of uses, and I took a moment to tug the disc free from the Player, stowing it in my bag. Like the empty Max Potion bottle, it would be recycled at the Ranger Outpost.

Ryan watched the beautiful Sawsbuck as it wandered out of the wandered across the plain towards him, tufts of white hair from the long winter still showing in its gleaming autumn coat.

It was a wondrous sight but catching a Sawsbuck was an awful lot of effort and the only time Ryan had ever considered that amount of effort to catch an evolved Pokémon, it was one he’d set out after. Well, not that Pokémon exactly, he’d set out with his pokeplayer loaded with Scyther disks and encounter a Scyther, lots or Scyther. Unfortunately for him, he’d also encountered a Scizor, and it was that Scizor that he’d spent the effort catching because obtaining one had been the entire point of the park run.

This time, he wasn’t going to get overly excited, or even go out of his way to catch the Sawsbuck, if it came to him and attacked, or even just decided to hang around, as unlikely as that was, he’d think about making the effort to capture it, if it walked away, there was no real loss.

Still, it wasn’t like Ryan could let the situation go by without considering his moves, what would he do it he did battle the Sawsbuck, ideas flitted through his head. Maybe he’d start by poisoning it, Alonso, his Alakazam, knew Toxic so that maybe a good opening gambit? Maybe getting Maggie, his Magnezone to paralyse it would be a better bet?

Ryan really didn’t know what he would do and there was still a slight red haze in his vision from losing his Gym, it mattered to him that he’d lost it.

Carefully weighing up his choices, Ryan chose to freeze and see what the Sawsbuck would do, ignore everything else, try and hold his breath and just wait. Whatever happened next would happen and he’d just go with the flow.

Sawsbuck kicked at the ground with a slender yet deadly-sharp hoof, both ears swiveling around to face us. It snorted again and slowly lowered its head, kicking at the ground again. Regalia floated in front of my face, his eyes locking onto mine as a thin tendril of alien awareness touched my mind. I didn’t resist, and after a few moments the awareness had firmly entrenched itself. Another second or two went by before a deep, velvety male voice filled my head.

=This deer is unsure,= he told me telepathically. =It has fought Blaziken in the past and remembers the bite of their fire, but it has recently claimed this territory and is loathe to let intruders simply pass without repercussion. You may wish to warn your Trainer to be wary if he battles it.= I nodded and faced Ryan, who had gone still when Sawsbuck had first focused on us.

“It seems we’re encroaching on this Sawsbuck’s newly-claimed territory,” I told the young man beside me. “It’s hard to say what it’ll do, since it hasn’t been here for long. There’s a chance it might leave to claim another part of the Valley, or it might decide to stand its ground and fight.”

Almost immediately after I finished speaking, Sawsbuck let out a honking bellow and jerked its head a few times, and with a final stomp, it charged forward with its sharp horns ready to gore. As it charged, a bright, lime-green sheen engulfed its horns. It looked like the deer was going to use a Megahorn attack; with those pointed prongs, it would be a nasty blow for anything caught by it.

=Be ready to stop Sawsbuck if Ryan can’t react fast enough,= I told Regalia telepathically. =We can’t go letting unhappy Pokemon eviscerate our visitors or their Pokemon.=

Ryan observed the Sawsbuck as it pawed the ground then began to charge, he had decided what to do though.

Ryan knew someone that he was sure would give him a good offer for a Sawsbuck and he was going to capitalise on the now presented opportunity.

His plans didn’t revolve around losing Blazer early in the battle, this battle was going to have to be a stall fest, unfortunately, but such was the lot of a steel trainer.

First however, Ryan had to get his Blaziken to dodge, but there might just have been another way around the problem. Ryan had noticed that the Sawsbucks charge wasn’t going to hit him, only Blazer so he simply pulled Blazers Pokeball back out of his pocket and attempted to return Blazer to the ball. The beam of seven-hundred nanometre red light shot towards the Blaziken engulfing it just as the Sawsbuck arrived on the spot...

Ryan decided that he didn’t want his Blaziken to take such a heavy blow as was coming, recalling the fowl at the very last possible second. Sawsbuck snorted violently as its target vanished into a beam of red light, stamping and shaking its head as foam flecked the sides of it muzzle. It was definitely upset, and now the Blaziken wasn’t its immediate threat, the deer clearly felt emboldened.

“Regalia, use a Psychic-backed Reflect!” I called, seeing what was about to happen. Instantly, my Sigilyph vanished, reappearing in front of Ryan as Sawsbuck jumped towards the young man and reared back on its hind hooves. Just as it lashed out with its razor-sharp front hooves, Regalia let loose a burst of energy that formed itself into a translucent shield; a purple haze radiating from the shield signaled that Regalia was bolstering the energy with his psionic powers.

In almost the same second that the Reflect was put into place, Sawsbuck’s hooves bashed against it. Thanks to its boost from Regalia’s psychic powers, the shield acted more like a Protect instead of simply slowing down Sawsbuck’s attack to weaken it. Thrown off-balance as its hooves struck the shield and bounced off, Sawsbuck made a surprised bleating noise as it staggered backwards a few steps, almost falling over. It then dropped back down to all fours, shaking its head and kicking at the ground as it snorted again.

“Be quick!” I told Ryan. “This deer definitely isn’t happy to see us.”

Sawsbuck will be F ... just got home from a camp and starting the actual post now

There is some reference to the following paper from the Journal of Special Topics (a physics journal) in this post (the stuff about -graphene and 700nm light): https://physics.le.ac.uk/journals/index.php/pst/article/view/295/160

Ryan had made a rather large mistake and he knew it, anything that involves your ranger saving your life really shouldn’t be happening, but it had and Ryan was quite thankful, he’d definitely have to avoid similar situations in the future, and perhaps dodging attacks by putting your Pokémon in their balls wasn’t the smartest of moves.

For now though, Ryan had to act, and there was one obvious action to take, sending out Maggie, his favourite (and only) Magnezone. Ryan pressed the button releasing the Pokémon with a cry of “Maggie, time to shut this guy down.” A beam of that 700 nanometre light shot out of the graphene shelled Pokeball, solidifying into a Magnezone, the aforementioned Maggie.

“Okay Maggie, let’s see if we can cause some confusion, or, more accurately, paralysis for this guy, use your Thunder Wave attack.” Ryan was clearly hoping that a quick, paralysing attack would put him on the front foot for the rest of the battle.

Thunder Wave was perhaps an inappropriate name for the attack that came next, at first it just looked like sparks jumping between the poles on the Magnezone’s magnets, but as the charge built up, it quickly became apparent that a more appropriate name for the attack would have been Lightning Wave. A sheet or pure electricity, not powerful enough to do any real damage, but still powerful enough to sting, rolled across the clearing towards to Sawsbuck, taking on a sinusoidal form as it did so.

Of course, being electricity, this fact would only have been apparent with a super slow motion camera, what the naked eye observed was simply a flash of light and a the fact that the area around the Magnezone was ever so slightly warmer after the attack, though that last bit was only noticeable to the eye if you happened to have infrared vision, which Ryan certainly didn’t.

He looked up from where he had been shielding his eyes from the flash to see what the Sawsbuck was doing.

Ryan quickly released another Pokemon, this one being a Magnezone. The UFO-esque Pokemon was ordered to use a Thunder Wave, apparently in an effort to confound Sawsbuck by paralyzing her and making her uncertain when she’d be able to move freely or not. And yes, it seemed this aggressive specimen was indeed a female; as she’d staggered back from striking Regalia’s Reflect, her tail had flicked up and revealed the white bottom. Only females had that coloring on the bottom of their tails, using it as a silent communication for fawns when there were predators around.

Regalia flew back over to me as the battle started, no longer needing to protect my Trainer. As Maggie powered up its Thunder Wave, Sawsbuck darted in for hasty attack. Leaping forward, she landed on her front hooves and swung her body around, kicking one back hoof and then the other against Maggie’s steely body. The Magnezone’s eyes narrowed, indicating it clearly didn’t appreciate the attack nor Sawsbuck’s proximity. It released its Thunder Wave in a massive burst, one that was strong enough to cause a brief but very bright flash. Even with her back to the other Pokemon, Sawsbuck noticed the momentary increase in brightness, but before she could turn, the Thunder Wave rolled over her.

Letting out a shrill bleat of surprise, the deer bucked around for a moment before staggering a few steps and abruptly toppling over. She landed on her side with a thud, her legs twitching and jerking as the muscles under her rich coat jumped and clenched. To someone who wasn’t a Trainer, it might look like Sawsbuck had gone into a seizure of some kind, but in reality the Thunder Wave had managed to fully immobilize her for the moment. In a few seconds the effect would wear off temporarily, and until she was specifically cured of her condition, it would continue to randomly render her incapacitated every so often.

The battle was going well, the Thunder Wave had done more than expected in making the Sawsbuck stumble and seemingly hurt itself but Ryan did not have time to rest on his laurels, he knew that this was the time to pounce, and pounce he did.

Okay, so he didn’t literally pounce, pouncing on an angry Pokémon probably isn’t a smart move, it might just have a tendency to leave you dead or severely injured. No Ryan’s pounce was more of a shout.

“Magnet Rise Maggie, we can’t let that Sawsbuck reduce our accuracy with its Sand Attack, follow it up with Magnet Bomb.”

The first of those moves really isn’t anything special to see, Maggie just floated slightly higher off the ground, maybe one metre instead of the usual two or three centimetres, and for a Pokémon with magnets on its body, using the earth’s magnetic field to float really doesn’t seem that special.

Magnet Bomb on the other hand, it is an unusual move to watch. It appeared as if Maggie was growing an extra magnet on her body, complete with coloured poles, but underneath one of her already existent magnets, effectively having a magnet growing out of a magnet, but disobeying the laws of physics because the like poles were on the same side, then the outer magnet dropped off and floated in mid air for a few seconds before accelerating toward the Sawsbuck.

It tracked the Sawsbuck’s movements as it flew through the air, the only way the Sawsbuck would be able to dodge this attack was with a last second movement, one Ryan didn’t think possible for such a large Pokémon in a paralysed state.

@Dog of Hellsing (I edited this since you told me it would take a while to post, accidently left a paragraph out when I c/ped it)

Ryan ordered Maggie to use a Magnet Rise, effectively letting the Pokemon levitate further off the ground instead of the handful of centimeters that was its normal height. As Maggie worked to reverse its poles and use magnetic force to push itself away from the ground, though, Sawsbuck was kicking in an effort to shake off her paralysis. After several seconds she abruptly rolled onto her stomach, getting her hind legs under her and heaving her upper body after her rear. She trembled for a moment, but then she let out an angry bleat and began to buck around. For a moment it looked like she’d lost her mind, but with a final stomp, she threw back her head and opened her muzzle wide.

At this point, Maggie was powering up for a Magnet Bomb. Focusing electrical pulses in its body, the Pokemon condensed the electricity into a small, highly unstable mass that had the properties of a magnet, meaning it had two poles. Defying all laws of nature, though, the attack neither repelled nor attracted, as the electricity it was made of was constantly changing its nature. It took several seconds for the attack to form, but once it was launched it flew forward with surprising speed.

In the time it took Maggie to prepare and fire its attack, though, Sawsbuck had been charging up an attack of her own. Mere moments after Maggie released its Magnet Bomb, Sawsbuck’s head snapped down and released a brilliant beam of crackling jade-green energy. It was a SolarBeam attack, and even though in most cases it wouldn’t do much against a Steel Pokemon like a Magnezone, Sawsbuck’s earlier Work Up gave it a boost in strength.

The SolarBeam and Magnet Bomb collided a few feet away from Sawsbuck, but the outcome wasn’t what one might expect. Despite its unstable nature, the energy of the Magnet Bomb was so condensed it was like a knife, cutting through the middle of the SolarBeam and breaking it into two smaller beams. One of these flew up into the air, but the second continued right towards Maggie. The Magnet Bomb itself lost some of its momentum from passing through the SolarBeam, and the next moment, that loss of momentum triggered the mass of electricity to implode violently. A powerful shockwave blew outward, hitting Sawsbuck and lifting her off her hooves. Just as she hit the ground with a thud, Maggie was struck by the lower half of her split SolarBeam. Maggie’s eyes narrowed as stray energy crackled along its body, losing a few inches of altitude from the force of the blow.

“That’s a feisty one,” I commented, watching as Sawsbuck struggled to her hooves. She looked rather wild, her coat mussed from the Magent Bomb’s release of static electricity after its implosion. There were specks of foam dotting her muzzle, and her sides were heaving as she worked herself into a fine little fury. “You might want to tread carefully; she looks like she’s gearing up for war or something.”

Ryan watched the Sawsbuck charging a move, unsure of what it would be. When the Solarbeam came flying through the air, he groaned . This could potentially do a large amount of damage and he really didn’t want to see Maggie injured, or worse, knocked out. He understood that injury was part of battle however and would heal Maggie after the battle had concluded.

The Solarbeam was less than halfway across the gap between the two Pokémon when Maggie launched the Magnet Bomb. The two attacks collided in mid-air, robbing the Magnet Bomb of a small amount of momentum, and reducing the amount of damage that would be done. Ryan could live with this, and Maggie definitely could, because the result was half of the Solarbeam being deflected straight up. The vertical portion wasn’t going to harm Maggie, or importantly, the surrounding environment. Ryan really didn’t want to have to put out a fire or something whilst battling. Multitasking wasn’t his strong point.

The Energy in the Magnet Bomb condensed and exploded, throwing the Sawsbuck backwards as Maggie was hit by the blast of energy that crackled around her body. The Sawsbuck was on the ground and Maggie has lost about five centimetres of altitude. Ryan doubted either Pokémon had enjoyed the outcome of those last attacks and even worse, he now had to figure out what his next move was going to be.

Options flew through his head, wait and see what the Sawsbuck would do, switch Pokémon, Attack, try and do some more status damage, brace for more attacks so as to better weather the assault.

His thoughts were interrupted by Sara giving him a hint on what he should do, not a direct, intentional hint, but a hint all the same. The “hint” was “You might want to tread carefully; she looks like she’s gearing up for war or something.”

Ryan made up his mind, it was time to raise his defences and he had the perfect move in mind.

“Maggie, use Barrier, keep the damage you take from its physical attacks to a minimum.”

Maggie appeared to concentrate for a few seconds before starting to glow. The glow began to solidify and in doing so, stop glowing. The solid effectively became a force field, technically an electro-magnetic field, it would slow anything electrically or magnetically charged if it was incoming, or speed it up if it was outgoing, but it had one major weakness, anything insubstantial and uncharged would go straight through unhindered.

Ryan just had to hope that the next few attacks coming Maggie’s way would be physical in nature.

Ryan ordered Maggie to employ a Barrier to bolster the Pokemon’s Defense some, which was probably a good idea considering the fact that Sawsbuck had access to several Fighting moves and seemed fond of bringing her hooves into play to use them. After her Work Up, they’d do even more damage than before, and that was definitely not a good combination for Maggie.

The large, UFO-esque Pokemon created a barrier of energy that looked solid, but upon closer inspection with special equipment would actually be revealed as an electro-magnetic force field of sorts. Physical attacks were hindered by the mass, but attacks made up of energy themselves would easily disrupt the Barrier and pass through it. A good idea given the current situation, to be sure. The only downside to the move was that the Barrier only covered a Pokemon from the front; it didn’t curve to protect the sides, back, top, or bottom at all. It was mainly to protect against hotheaded Pokemon like Sawsbuck here, ones that kept recklessly attacking head-on instead of trying to be sneaky and land a blow from behind or above.

As Maggie readied its Barrier, Sawsbuck snorted violently and flicked her tail rapidly, a sure sign that she was working into a fine frenzy. I then her coat beginning to fluff out, like an angry Liepard getting ready to attack a foe. After noticing this, I also became aware of blue-green tendrils of static dancing along the deer’s lithe form. Slowly her head dropped and her wide muzzle opened as she bugled loudly, the sound coming deep from her chest.

Then, with no further warning, the Sawsbuck gathered herself and performed and almighty leap. When she landed she immediately dashed towards Maggie, the seafoam-colored whips of electricity leaping from her body as she charged towards her foe. She then threw herself at the Magnezone, a crazed look in her eyes as she hurtled through the air. She slammed into the Barrier, and in many cases it would have at least confused the one striking it. Sawsbuck, though, was too concerned with attacking her enemy and didn’t seem to noticed when she hit the Barrier with the force of a speeding car. I winced from the sound of impact, then again as Sawsbuck’s attack carried her through the Barrier and into Maggie.

There was something to be grateful for here, though. Sawsbuck’s Wild Charge was already a poor attack to use considering Maggie would resist it. On top of that, it was a Physical move whose strength was further reduced, despite Sawsbuck’s boost in attacking strength from Work Up. Finally, the move was so wild and uncontrolled that the backlash from it caused Sawsbuck a fair chunk of damage as well. This was evident when the deer hit her hooves after completing her Wild Charge; her legs trembled as she staggered away, her front legs buckling after a moment and dropping her to what could be considered her elbows. Her rear swayed and came close to following the rest of her, but somehow she managed to stay in that position. Most likely she’d been gripped by paralysis again, caught in a very awkward pose that left her quite vulnerable.

This Sawsbuck was aggressive, that would make drawing the battle out more of a challenge, it seemed determined to hurt itself with everything Ryan did. There were good things about this, and bad things about this, one of the good points was this aggressiveness made it easy for a cautious Pokémon like Maggie to sit there, boost defences and then just wait till the Sawsbuck tired itself out.

Of course, Ryan highly doubted waiting it out would do all of the required damage, but it would go a long way to making the final catch easier.

The downsides where of course obvious, Ryan couldn’t wait for it to put itself to sleep then jump in and do a ton of damage when the Sawsbuck was asleep, which is perhaps the easiest known way of catching a Pokémon in the national park, and one he had used on at least one occasion before this.

Ryans next move was therefore quite apparent to him, he ordered Maggie to “Keep raising your defences, use barrier again!”

A second layer of the highly concentrated energy flowed out of the magnets and formed a barrier just inside the first, this would further reduce the damage of any physical attacks the Sawsbuck would use, and it seemed to really love getting in close and hitting physically.

Maybe it was the rage it was in, or maybe t was just the Sawsbucks personality, but Ryan was determined to take advantage of any chinks in the Pokémon’s armour, either mental or physical, he would beat this Pokémon down and show it who was boss. This Sawsbuck was aggressive, that would make drawing the battle out more of a challenge, it seemed determined to hurt itself with everything Ryan did. In most cases, using moves to boost one’s defenses was a good idea. Using such moves multiple times in a row could backfire, though, if a foe became familiar with what a move looked like and knew what to expect of it. It seemed this was the case with Sawsbuck; even though she was violent, she clearly wasn’t stupid. Her eyes narrowed as Maggie started readying to use another Barrier, and abruptly she tossed her head and stamped a hoof. Her tail flicked up and down as she threw out her chest, strutting around and bleating tauntingly at the Electric Pokemon.

Maggie’s center eye narrowed to a slit as Sawsbuck Swaggered to and fro, trying to prod the Magnezone into blind irritation. It was obvious she wasn’t liking the idea of Maggie bolstering its defensive prowess any further and was doing what she felt was best to prevent that from happening. She didn’t keep up the attempt for long, though, because the moment Maggie stopped focusing on its Barrier and started charging one attack or another, Sawsbuck gave a loud bellow and made to leap at her foe.

Except at that moment, her muscles locked up and she faceplanted into the ground. She landed in a sprawl, her limbs twitching and her breath coming in annoyed blasts as she fought against the effects of her paralysis. Maggie was clearly ready to take advantage of the moment, but its anger at Sawsbuck’s earlier Swagger left it bemused and it gathered too much electrical energy too quickly. This created an unstable mass that blew apart a few seconds later, the backlash of it washing over Maggie and leaving a bit of damage in its wake.

Ryan watched as Maggie, obviously confused, accidently blew herself up. This really wasn’t part of his battle strategy. As he was planning his next move, a Pidgey came flying into the clearing they were battling in, dropping a note on Ryan’s head.

He bent down and picked it up, noticing that both Pokémon involved in the battle were on the ground, and would have to take time to pick themselves up, Ryan decided to open the letter.

    Ryan Hoare,
We are happy to announce that as of the time you receive this missive, you are the Icirrus City Gym Leader, effective immediately.

    Yours,
    Unova Gym Authority

Ryan turned to Sara, hugging her enthusiastically exclaiming, “I’ve got a Gym again, it isn’t Canalave, but it’s a Gym, the guys in Unova obviously think I’m good enough.”

That was when Ryan realised what he was doing, he sheepishly let go, apologising profusely.

Ryan turned his attention back to the battle as the two Pokémon lined up to fight again, Maggie growling loudly trying to intimidate the Sawsbuck slightly, not that it really seemed to be working.

The time had come for Ryan to order Maggie to make a move but he really didn’t have anything handy. He had a few long term ideas though, and “the first step on the way to greatness”, as his father used to say, was to “always have the correct Pokémon in the battle.”

Ryan’s hand flew down to his belt, pulling out a Pokeball with an ornate, red, letter “A” inked on the side. He proceeded to press the release catch on the side of the ball, the beam of red light landed in front of Maggie and materialised into Alonso, Ryan’s Alakazam.

“Alonso, put up a weakish sub, don’t put too much energy into it, use that twig as a base for it. Maggie, pull out of the battle, come stand with me for now.”

What Ryan wasn’t saying, but Alonso knew, was that the sub was a distraction, just a small shield that would absorb an attack whilst allowing Alonso to get into Ryan’s head so they wouldn’t have to communicate verbally.

As Alonso began putting energy into the twig that Ryan had pointed at, it slowly formed into a crude wooden structure, fragile looking, but maybe able to hold for a few minutes.

Maggie managed to scoot away from the battle to sit beside Ryan and rest, ready to be called upon again.Ryan watched as Maggie, obviously confused, accidently blew herself up.
