“Alright, I'm ready. Let's continue,” Felix said, recalling Laurence back into his Pokeball. Fumiyo, from her perch on Felix's shoulder, also appeared eager to continue; the Pokemon gave a joyful cry and pointed forward.

Makina nodded, grinning at the Cinccino's action- the Pokemon's happiness was extremely infectious. “Let's head out, then!” She motioned forward, and the group continued on their way.

The path followed the rock wall for quite some time, continuing ever to the left. Eventually the trail began to fork off, allowing two ways to continue. The main trail appeared to slope upwards, allowing one to travel more towards the volcano. This would mostly likely be the quickest way forward, but was also the most open. The side path, however, lead to a what appeared to be a small cave cut into the wall. The cave interior, while large enough for the group to enter with no trouble, appeared to be pitch-black.

“Looks like we have two different ways to proceed,” Makina said, turning to Felix. “Which would you prefer?”

The Ranger had given a green light to continuing forward. The path seemed very long as we did walked for some time. Still, it was an interesting view. I managed to see other Aron in the distance playing and even some bird Pokemon just flying over the mountain on their way to some other destination. Either way, these Pokemon weren't close or accessible enough to consider. Soon the path split in two.

The Ranger asked me which option I wanted to take. The wide path ahead seemed safer, but alas, I was a curious guy. The cave seemed big enough for different kind of Pokemon to live in. What could possibly be hiding there?

"I'd like to explore the cave if that's okay," I answered the Ranger.

As I approached the cave, I noticed it was very dark in there.

"That might be a problem," I thought to myself.

At that moment, Fumiyo's ear twitched towards the cave.

She tapped my shoulder and pointed towards the cave saying, "Cinccino! Cinccino!"

That was it for me. I knew there had to be something in the cave, even if it was deep inside, I had to see it for myself. I took out a Pokeball opened it. I flash of light came out of the ball and in an instant a big orange dragon appeared right behind the group. The dragon gave a sweet smile as she saw everyone.

"Belle, we are planning on going inside this cave, but it's a bit too dark. Could you help us with Safeguard?" I asked gently.

The Dragonite bellowed a bit as she nodded. Suddenly, a strange aura covered Belle. It was of a light blue coloring and it seemed to wave a bit over her skin, but more importantly, it glowed. It may not have imitated the light of day, but it was a constant glow nonetheless. Fumiyo's smile vanished at that time as it looked like she was hypnotized by the elegant shine.

"Thank you Belle. Please follow closely behind us, okay?" I said to the Dragonite.

As she nodded back, I turned towards the Ranger and said, "Okay, we are ready."

Sure, everything seemed okay, but, I couldn't shake that feeling on the back on my mind that I was forgetting something; something really important.

"I'd like to explore the cave if that's okay," Felix answered Makina. As they approached closer, however, he appeared to notice just how dark it was. He seemed to a falter a moment before Fumiyo began to point towards the cave, crying out as if she had heard something within the darkness.

Makina smiled in return and went through her pack, searching for two flashlights that she kept prepared just for this moment. A flash of light caught her eye, and she looked up to be greeted by a large Dragonite. As Felix explained the situation to the Dragonite, whose name was apparently Belle, the Dragon-type gave a cry of acknowledgment and began to glow a light blue color. While the display caused the Dragonite to stick out like a sore thumb, it definitely served a useful purpose; the immediate area was decently illuminated. “Guess we won't need these,” Makina remarked airily, putting the flashlights away. “Shall we head on?”

The cave, oddly enough, sloped downwards rather then ascending upward, meaning that it took a side path away from the mountain. The tunnel narrowed at a few points, but they managed to squeeze in by traveling single-file for a time. After what seemed to be an hour (only a mere twenty minutes, Makina estimated, looking at her watch), the tunnel evened out and led to a much more open area of the cave, allowing plenty of space to look about. On the far corner lay a small stream, an odd sight to see in such a volcanic environment. The water source appeared to be coming from an area far above the cave, making it stranger still. The tunnel had a path that led even further in, located dead ahead. This trail, unlike the one they just traveled upon, jutted to the right and led further up.

“Let's rest a moment. This looks like the perfect place to do so, and there's bound to be plenty of Pokemon living in this area,” Makina called out to Felix, walking towards the stream. “Plus, I don't know about you, but traveling in such a confined area is uncomfortable!”

<Lazy,> Aria remarked, throwing a mock-hopeless gaze at her partner. <I don't see why I bother with you sometimes.>

The feeling is mutual. Makina jokingly replied. I bet none of the other Rangers deal with such an impossible Gardevoir-

<Hold that thought,> Aria replied, throwing a wispy hand up and using the other to point to the left, <We have company.>

Makina looked over to confirm the sight, seeing a forest-green Pokemon slowly approach. It had two tusks jutting from it's mouth and, judging from the fact that it appeared absolutely soaked, had just risen from the water. It stopped in place, frozen as a statue; apparently it had been just as surprised seeing them as the group was as well.

“Never thought we'd find a Fraxure here,” Makina said to Felix, keeping an eye on the Dragon-type. “Want to go for it?"

The path seemed so long, but I was excited to be inside a cave. I kept curiously looking at every detail of the cave. Everything just seemed so interesting to me. We eventually reached a room with a stream of water in it. The Ranger suggested that we rest. I found it odd since I wasn't tired. I was used to walking a lot. Fumiyo wasn't tired either, but then again she was riding on my shoulder.

"Well, if you want..." I began to say when suddenly a dragon Pokemon showed up.

I was surprised, I mean, I would have never expected to see one in here.

Still, I wasn't particularly interested in a Fraxure. I waved a it and so did Fumiyo, hoping to calm it down a bit since it looked surprised as well.

I leaned towards the Ranger and answered, "No, I think we should keep going. Let's rest a further ahead since I think we are bothering that Fraxure."

"No, I think we should keep going,” Felix said, waving over at the Fraxure. “Let's rest a further ahead since I think we are bothering that Fraxure."

<He has a point,> Aria remarked. <I wouldn't be surprised if that Fraxure either charged us or ran for the hills, it looks terrified.>

Fair enough, Makina replied to Aria before nodding over to Felix, then slowly backed away. If the Pokemon decided to charge forward at the humans, she could attempt to use Rezi to repel the Fraxure back. Otherwise, Felix would have another battle on his hands.

Surprisingly, the Fraxure chose the better part of valor; it turned tail and dove back into the stream. “Well, there solves that problem at least. Let's head out so we don't bother him once more.” Makina said, pointing towards the upper path.

They had not even walked forward twenty feet when a strange sound began to reach their ears, coming from an indent in the wall not far from the tunnel. Makina kneeled down to get a closer look, but it was too dark to see what was inside. “Aria, mind using Will-o-Wisp so we can see what's in here?”

The Gardevoir nodded, and a few small burning flames appeared around Aria, glowing an azure blue. One of the flames hovered down to where Makina was looking, revealing a small, reddish-brown Pokemon dozing away. Even though it's six tails were curved to hide the creature's face, there was no denying it's species.

“Who would have thought Vulpix were such deep sleepers, and snorers at that,” Makina said quietly, trying to not wake up the Vulpix. “They're quite powerful though. Interested in catching one?”

This time I got lucky. The Fraxure didn't seem to want to battle and I didn't want to battle it either. We both went our separate ways. I followed the Ranger as she guided us forward, but, we didn't seem to walk by much. At that time, Belle's Safeguard had faded. It usually didn't last this long and I didn't want to tire her before a possible battle. Luckily, the Ranger's Gardevoir provided some light. At that moment, I took out her Pokeball and pointed it at her.

"Belle, you should rest for now. Thanks for your help," I said as a beam came out of the Pokeball and retrieved the Dragonite.

I quickly turned to watch Gardevoir's blue fire shed light on what was around and there she was; a small six-tailed fox, sleeping.

For a moment I smiled at how cute she was when then something snapped inside my head and I froze right at the spot as I thought to myself, "I knew I forgot something! I knew I forgot something!" over and over.

Fumiyo quickly noticed that and slapped me with her tail.

I quickly snapped out of it and said, "Oh, right right right...uhh..."

I then quickly put away Belle's Pokeball and took out another one.

I opened the ball right in my hand and said, "Laurence, how about another turn?"

The ball let out a small flash of light out of which came out a familiar figure. The very same ghost that had done battler earlier, Laurence, my trusty Dusknoir.

"Let's try to get you healed a bit. See that Vulpix over there?" I said as I pointed towards the Pokemon.

Laurence turned to her as I whispered, "Use Pain Split."

At that moment, Laurence' eye gave out a sudden glow as it prepared to cast some sort of spell.

Before the Dusknoir finished performing his attack, I took notice of the flame still floating in the air and said to the Ranger, "Would you m-mind dousing that flame? This battle calls for...uhh...umm...a bit of d-darkness. Yeah."

My nervous tone was slowly coming back. I couldn't help it for some reason. We were, after all, in the presence of a mighty Vulpix.

Felix appeared rather nervous as his gaze rested on the Vulpix. Fumiyo had noticed as well, and lightly slapped her Trainer with her tail. "Oh, right right right...uhh..."

Makina inwardly groaned. Due to the earlier battle, she had completely forgotten that Felix seemed to be uneasy around Fire-types. Oddly enough, he seemed unfazed by Fire attacks in general; he had used a few earlier, and didn't shirk away from Aria's embers floating nearby. Still, it would be interesting to see how he fared this battle.

Felix pulled out a Pokeball, holding it forward to release the creature. "Laurence, how about another turn?"

Laurence materialized forth, facing Felix. He appeared to still be nursing some wounds from earlier, but otherwise appeared fine. The Dusknoir hovered patiently, waiting for orders.

"Let's try to get you healed a bit. See that Vulpix over there?" Felix whispered, careful to not wake up the Pokemon, "Use Pain Split."

Laurence nodded, turning towards the Vulpix. A slight glow began to form around the Dusknoir and Vulpix, the two auras pulsing in time with each other. The slumbering Pokemon began to squirm, as if troubled by something unseen to the group.

"Would you m-mind dousing that flame?” Felix murmured suddenly, “This battle calls for...uhh...umm...a bit of d-darkness. Yeah.”

Makina said nothing, but motioned to Aria to move the wisp away from the two Pokemon. The small flame moved back towards the Gardevoir, leaving the area near the Vulpix's den covered in darkness.

It didn't take long for the Vulpix to notice something was wrong. There was a startled yelp as the Pokemon woke with a start, along with the slight sound of scrabbling on the rock as the Fire-type searched about for the culprit. The noise began to slow, followed by dead silence.

Suddenly, the area was ablaze with light. A large stream of flame shot forward from the den, aiming for whatever intruder was nearby. Laurence attempted to sidestep the shot, but seemed to be slowed by something. Because of this, hemanaged to take a nasty blow to his side.

Makina gave a shout of warning, afraid that Felix had been in the fire's path. Thankfully, Laurence had been thinking the same thing as well. The Dusknoir had managed to protect his Trainer by putting up a barrier near the human. Still, the danger was not over. “Felix, you need to move, now!” Aria, get ready to Teleport him if another Flamethrower goes astray.

Thankfully, or possibly unfortunately, another Fire attack did not billow forth. Instead, as the area darkened once more, a haunting, lulling sound began to fill the air. Laurence's glowing eye appeared to droop, as if trying to stay awake.

I towards the Gardevoir with a smile as I saw the fire move away causing the area to become pitch black as it was at the beginning. Laurence didn't seem to be making and sound and neither was the Vulpix, when suddenly, the darkness was shattered by a massive stream of fire that seemed to be headed straight at me. I heard the Ranger yelling at me, telling me to move away.

"Cinc!" Fumiyo shouted in fear as well.

I stared at the fire coming right at me. I seemed to be frozen in fear. My only reaction was that I had put my right hand over my left shoulder. I kept hearing in my head the angry cries of other Pokemon, specifically an Arcanine and an Infernape.

That's when I saw another light. A barrier had formed right in front of me. I looked at it and took a deep breathe as I came back to my senses only to be shocked by another realization. I saw the flame dissipate, but the last thing at the edge of those flames was Laurence. He seemed to have taken some damage, and it was all because I wasn't attentive enough. The images of an Infernape and an Arcanine in my head suddenly blurred out leaving the image of the Vulpix right ahead just as the darkness set in once more. As I heard a strange sound in the cave, I realized I had to keep on going.

"You don't get a second shot," I said to the Vulpix. "Laurence, Astonish!"

Suddenly, the darkness was broken yet again. Laurence decided to change his strategy due to the lack of light around and, as he expanded himself a bit, he made the markings on his body glow. The mouth section of the markings even opened up widely giving out a loud roar. All in all, due to the darkness, the only thing that could be seen was a demonic face floating in the middle of the cave, roaring and laughing a bit. I hoped that the sudden scare would be enough to break Vulpix's hypnotic spell.

Still, the display only lasted a few seconds as I added, "Shift into Shadow Sneak!"

Just as sudden as it appeared, the glow on Laurence's markings vanished. Laurence had sank into his own shadow, but with no light around, it was impossible to tell where he was, or, at least it was impossible for me to tell where he had gone to. At least I knew he was smart enough not to stay on the same spot.

"Give her a surprise with Thunderpunch," I said with a confident voice.

Laurence's shadow, where ever it was, began sneaking around towards Vulpix, trying to near her body from the side. At that moment where Laurence was close enough, he lifted himself from the shadow, but not his entire body. He first shot out his electrified fist towards Vulpix as he was emerging from the ground. Sure, it was a risk to have Laurence near the wild Pokemon, but I still hoped for luck to be on our side.

Fumiyo looked at me, or at least tried to. She could tell. I was still terrified, but something was different. I was acting and doing something about it.

Felix, thanks to Laurence's perfectly-timed barrier, appeared to be thankfully unharmed. He appeared shaken though, only reacting when the starting notes of Vulpix's Hypnosis reached his ears. "You don't get a second shot," he called out to the Vulpix. "Laurence, Astonish!"

Laurence, struggling to stay awake, began to expand once more, this time making the markings on his body glow slightly as well. The Dusknoir opened the mouth on his stomach to enhance the realism, even letting out a loud roar to scare his opponent even more. The strange note cut itself off as the roar faded out.

In the dim light caused by Laurence's Astonish, Makina could see the Vulpix cowering in it's den, casting a fearful gaze over at the sinister face in the darkness. After a moment the Fire-type blinked, as if finally putting two and two together; she could finally see her attacker. Letting out a loud cry of her own, Vulpix suddenly rushed straight forward, covering herself in a cloak of flames.

Aria, seeing Vulpix on the move, acted immediately. The Gardevoir Teleported a short distance over next to Felix, the Wisp fading as she did so, and placed a hand on the Trainer's shoulder, likely telling him that she would move him to safety with a single word. Her gaze appeared to flicker a moment though, as if she had saw or sensed something.

"Shift into Shadow Sneak!" Felix shot out to Laurence, seeming to not notice Aria for the moment.

Laurence sunk into the ground, barely missing Vulpix's charge. Vulpix stumbled as the resistance she had expected had never come, and slowed to a stop, looking about. She looked over at Felix and the nearby Gardevoir, obviously confused. The flames around the foxlike creature began to fade as the Pokemon mulled over what to do next.

"Give her a surprise with Thunderpunch," Felix said, completing the ambush.

Laurence erupted from the ground once more, this time from the side rather then beneath the Pokemon. One of his fists began to crackle with electricity, and he struck the Vulpix in the midsection. The Fire-type let out a howl of pain, but held her ground; in fact, she appeared to absorb the impact a bit, and began to be outlined in a dark glow. She struck the Dusknoir back with a swipe, Laurence's attack only appearing to enhance her strike.

Laurence winced, (at least Makina assumed he did, for his eye appeared to flicker a moment), and floated back a bit. Whatever that attack had been, it seemed to be of an element weak to the Ghost.

Vulpix retaliated with a combo of her own, blowing another stream of fire towards the Dusknoir. This flame, unlike the last one, appeared to twist and wind it's way around Laurence, turning into a vortex. In moments, Laurence was trapped in the center.

Least the flames give us plenty of light to see by, Makina silently remarked. Still, this did not bode well for Laurence.

The strange noise had finally faded as I saw Laurence perform his Astonish attack. But it seemed that in doing so I had caused my Dusknoir to reveal his position. Vulpix quickly set herself on flame in order to attack, but luckily Laurence was already prepared to dodge as he sank into his shadow. Darkness soon set in once more and I could only wait to see the outcome.

Laurence suddenly came out of the shadows striking Vulpix with his electrified fist. It seemed to have done a good amount of damage judging from the fire-type's reaction, but Vulpix was ready for it. She quickly countered Laurence's attack by using some sort of dark move that appeared to have been enhanced by the Thunderpunch.

"Payback..." I thought to myself.

Before I could make any other command, Vulpix continued on with her assault letting out a stream of fire that surrounded Laurence. Now the Dusknoir was trapped. We had to do something about that.

"Laurence, aim for the ground. Use Dark Pulse!" I said with a firm voice.

The Dusknoir suddenly became covered by a black aura as it had once before, but this time, he knew that a different strategy was in order. Laurence focused the energy which caused the aura to move to his right hand. The energy almost seemed to have gotten the shape of a ball. Laurence shot the strange mass towards the ground beneath him right at the base of the Fire Spin. I only hoped that the burst of energy would set him free. I waited to see if it worked. There seemed to be a chance that the sudden burst of energy would surprise Vulpix, and that was an opportunity I couldn't miss.

"Go with Night Shade!" I shouted using a cheering voice.

Laurenced's eye shifted and locked on to the fiery fox and let out what looked like black lightning which headed straight for the target. There didn't seem to be much strategy this time. Only a mysterious attacker using the light or lack of light to his advantage. It was my first time battling like this and I really hope I wasn't taking a big risk.

Felix looked over at the Fire Spin, possibly mulling over what to do to get rid of the cyclone. After a moment, he shot out his next command. "Laurence, aim for the ground. Use Dark Pulse!" Felix called out to Laurence.

Laurence began to focus on another dark sphere of energy, concentrating the force into his fist. He launched the sphere below him, aiming for the heart of the fiery tornado. Upon impact, the sphere dispersed into a large shadowy wave, spreading outward. The flames still swirled about, lightly battering Laurence, but appeared to be greatly weakened; the Spin would not last much longer. In addition, both Pokemon could see each other once more. The Dusknoir looked straight at the Vulpix, prepared to strike.

"Go with Night Shade!" Felix called out cheerfully.

Laurence became enveloped in the same dark aura as before, keeping an eye on the Vulpix as he did so. As the aura transferred over to the Fire-type, the wild Pokemon shuddered, feeling some unseen pain from the attack. As the Night Shade faded, Vulpix became outlined in a fiery outline, growing in intensity by the moment. Soon the entire area area around her was rippling with heat. They began to be focused into waves then shot forward, striking Laurence and the weakened Fire Spin. The cyclone sputtered a moment, then disappeared altogether.

Vulpix appeared worn out from the Heat Wave, as if she was not used to using such powerful attacks or suck a string of moves for a long time; her tails were beginning to droop, and wasn't moving about as fast as before. Still, the fox appeared to have a couple of tricks up her sleeve, so to speak. She held her head up and began to call out something to Laurence. It was hard to tell, but the tone of voice sounded like... bragging? Whatever it was, Laurence appeared to be paying close attention, and began to flex one of his hands in response.

“Whatever Vulpix is doing, it's definitely annoying Laurence,” Makina warned Felix. “You might want to snap him out of it before he becomes too angry to listen.”

My strategy didn't seem to have worked as well as I hoped this time. As Laurence prepared to his dark aura and made it into a sphere, the fire seemed to have kept damaging him. He finally fired the Dark Pulse towards the base of the Fire Spin, but only managed to weaken it. The fire was still there, and, not only did it weakened Laurence, it revealed his position. Vulpix seemed to have gotten overconfident for a moment as Laurence got a chance to go for a second attack. He focused his energy again and fired that dark thunderbolt from his eye which quickly made it to its target. The fiery Pokemon was hurt, but she finally responded.

I couldn't tell why for a moment, but she was focusing her energy for a reason. I began thinking about what to do next when my thought pattern was thrown off by a sudden heat that filled the area. The heat seemed to have focused on Laurence who couldn't pretend anymore. He was hurting and I could see it in his expression.

At that moment, I heard Vulpix apparently saying something. I didn't pay much attention to that until I received that warning from Ranger Makina. I could only think of two moves that could cause anger. And by the sound of this one, it could only have been Swagger. There was the power boost that came with it, but I couldn't take that risk. Laurence wasn't such a friendly ghost when he was angry.

I pointed Laurence's Pokeball towards the Dusknoir's last position and said, "Laurence, return!"

A red beam suddenly came out of the Pokeball and recalled Laurence into it. With the beam ending right where Laurence was and having covered him, it was probably very obvious that he wasn't there anymore. On top of that, I waited for Vulpix's chant to end before doing anything else. All of this only meant that I had to act fast before Vulpix got away.

I turned my occupied shoulder forward and said, "Fumiyo, your turn girl."

"Cinc!" exclaimed the Cinccino as she happily jumped forward into the darkness. "Cinccino!" she shouted again trying to sound challenging to her opponent.

As I slapped my forehead with my hand I said, "You do realize you just gave away your position, right?" I sighed and continued, "Listen carefully and use Thunder Wave when you hear Vulpix coming."

Fumiyo scratched the back of her head in embarrassment for a moment and shook her head as she focused and began charging electricity around her body preparing to release the shocking surprise when she got the chance. With her hears wide open, she listened carefully for the sound of moments, especially in a volcanic cave with such a rocky ground. Still, with the previous mess up, she might be too late to try and listen. I just waited and see if she could charge enough electricity in time to actually make an effective attack.

"Laurence, return!" Felix commanded, holding up the Dusknoir's Pokeball. Attack boost or not, it appeared that Felix did not wish to risk having a Confused Pokemon out and about. Makina couldn't blame him, though this would turn the situation more in Vulpix's favor; with Laurence gone, the field would be pitch-black once more. Perhaps he would go with Dragonite to light up the area once more?

Felix appeared to have other plans, however. "Fumiyo, your turn, girl," he said, moving his shoulder forward. The Cinccino had no qualms about this, happily leaping off her perch with a loud cry and into the darkness. The noise was not lost on her Trainer; Felix let out a groan and covered his face with a hand, "You do realize you just gave away your position, right?"

“Vulpix is probably more confused than anything else, really,” Makina remarked. “After all, she was just fighting a Dusknoir. Also, I have a spare flashlight should you need one.”

Felix sighed and directed his attention to Fumiyo. "Listen carefully and use Thunder Wave when you hear Vulpix coming."

There was a slight scuffling sound as Fumiyo walked forward a few steps, then silence as the Cinccino waited patiently for the Vulpix to make her move. A few sparks lit up the darkness as Fumiyo began to build up enough of a static charge for a shock, one of the sparks illuminating Fumiyo for a split second.

That moment was exactly what Vulpix had been waiting for. The fox Pokemon leaped forward letting out a battle howl, subtlety obviously not her strong suit. It was difficult to tell what the wild Pokemon had planned due to the poor lighting from the electrical sparks, but Vulpix appeared to have twisted her body around in the leap, striking Fumiyo with her multiple tails. One, two strikes resounded in the air before the area was illuminated by the Cinccino releasing a full Thunder Wave charge onto the hapless Fire-type. Vulpix jerked a moment as the electricity coursed through her, but managed to stay on her feet, albeit in a stiff posture. Letting out a growl, she opened up her mouth for a countermove; a small orb of energy began to materialize, though of what attack or element Makina was uncertain.

“Vulpix is up to something,” Makina warned her Trainer. “It's taking quite a while to power up; either it's a move that the Pokemon is not familiar with, or it's going to pack a punch.”

There was a sudden silence as Fumiyo stopped to listen for her opponent. The Cinccino began to build up electricity as she waited, giving out sparks from time to time which simultaneously provided a tiny bit of light. Still, that light seemed to have only helped Vulpix find her target instead. The fiery fox Pokemon rushed towards Fumiyo and jumped pounding at the Cinccino with her tail, not once, but twice.

Luckily, Fumiyo had been charging her attack for long enough and at that precise moment she discharged the electrical waves into Vulpix's body. The Fire type's posture seemed to have changed after that. It became notably harder for her to move which meant that the Thunder Wave had done its job. At that moment, Vulpix began to charge an attack of her own. She seemed to be struggling with it a bit. I heard Ranger Makina give an explanation of what she thought was going on.

That made me think, "Is this an Energy Ball? Shadow Ball wouldn't be effective after all. Either way..."

"Fumiyo, pierce through it with Rock Blast!" I said as I pointed forward.

Fumiyo smiled and nodded for a moment before focusing her energy with her arms forward. At that moment, a ball of energy appeared between her hand which suddenly split into five. Each piece started becoming darker and darker until they revealed themselves to be sharp rocks. Fumiyo aimed right at the energy Vulpix was charging. Right then she pointed forward as the first stone was fired at Vulpix's attack in a straight line. The first rock hadn't hit its target yet when the second one was shot right behind the first. I hoped that with some luck, the attack could eventually pierce that strange ball of energy and then continue straight towards the fox Pokemon.

As I saw the attack being performed, I looked back at the Ranger and said, "About those flashlights, could we use them as soon as Fumiyo's attack is over?" I was trying to be as polite as possible, but at the same time, I couldn't keep my eyes off the battle.

Once I saw Fumiyo's last rock be fired, I hoped that the Ranger would be kind enough to use the flashlight at that moment. That's when I decided to continue with another command.

"Now use Hype..." I began to say when I then stopped myself thinking, No, if Fumiyo uses Hyper Voice inside the cave it could hurt the other Pokemon living here."

Thinking fast I continued saying, "Fumiyo, use Sing!"

"Cinccino!" she exclaimed as she heard the command. That seemed to be a favorite move of hers.

I quickly covered my ears as Fumiyo took a deep breath and let out a sweet melody. The lullaby actually began to echo inside the cave helping to amplify the sound. As the echoed repeated each note, even with my ears covered, it started to get a bit hard to stay awake. I hoped the Ranger had a plan of her own to stop herself from falling asleep as well.

As the song stopped, I knew I had to take the chance. I pulled out another Parkball and aimed towards the Vulpix. As I looked straight at the Fire Type, my mind couldn't help but flash back to those two Pokemon.

The thoughts echoed in my mind, "Infernape, let's practice your Flare Blitz!...Infernape? How about your Arcanine? Come on, let's try it!...Listen to me!...Wait, what are you..."

The sound of crackling flames began to echo inside my mind, I suddenly shook my head and snapped out of it. I scratched my shoulder and looked at it for a moment and then back at the Fire Type in front of me.

As I gripped on the Parkball and tossed it towards the Vulpix I thought to myself, "I'm going to be a stronger trainer from now on."

I watched with hope as the ball made its way through the air and headed towards its target. Fumiyo also stared, both of us expecting to have a new friend in our team after that.

"Fumiyo, pierce through it with Rock Blast!" Felix commanded, then looked over at Makina. "About those flashlights, could we use them as soon as Fumiyo's attack is over?"

Fumiyo nodded and held her hands up, as if trying to reach out for something unseen. In the dim light caused by Vulpix's charging attack, Makina could just make out five rocky objects hovering above the Cinccino. The rocks flew forward, striking the Vulix with deadly accuracy.

Makina lightly tossed over a flashlight towards Felix, with Aria catching it in midair before hovering it over to the Trainer. Once this was done, she turned her attention over to the battle. She was surprised to see all five attacks hit with no trouble, then remembered Fumiyo's ability: Skill Link. This ensured that all multi-hit moves would hit without fail. Either way, the attack worked perfectly; whatever Vulpix had planned, the fox had lost her concentration on the third strike. The attack fizzled, then faded out entirely.

"Now use Hype..." Felix stopped in mid-sentence, as if considering something. Without too much of a pause, he quickly changed his attack. "Fumiyo, use Sing!"

A sweet melody began to resonate throughout the cave, greatly relaxing anyone who heard the tune. Vulpix appeared to stagger as she attempted to try staying on her feet, blinking slowly as her eyes grew heavy. Even Makina had to pinch herself in an attempt to stay awake.

As the song began to fade, Felix stepped towards the Vulpix, Parkball in hand, his face unreadable. Aria, who had been fighting a losing battle against sleep, suddenly jumped a moment and looked over at the Trainer, as if sensing something. Wordlessly, Felix lightly tossed the Parkball over at the sleeping Vulpix. The sphere sucked in the fox-like creature, only shaking once before giving off a resounding ping.

“Congratulations are in order once more,” Makina said to Felix, trying to fight off a yawn. She walked over to Vulpix's Ball and placed it next to Aron's. She was a little curious over what exactly Aria had seen, but that was a question for another time. “Would you like to continue on, or would you like to heal your team first?”

I carefully watched Fumiyo perform her attack. I saw as rock by rock each headed straight towards Vulpix. I was hoping to see them break the incoming attack, but they did even better and actually prevented Vulpix from launching the attack in the first place. I would have tossed a Superball at that moment, but no, I had to make sure. I instructed Fumiyo to use her Sing attack which she joyfully accepted.

She took a deep breath and her song quickly echoed through the cavern. It seems that the gentle melody was quickly putting everyone to sleep, but thankfully we all managed to endure, except for Vulpix. With her asleep, I quickly grabbed a Parkball and tossed it at her trying to overcome my memories from the past. After that, I knew I had become a stronger trainer, but, by how much? This was a cute little Vulpix after all. Powerful, but not the deadliest or scariest of fire types. The Parkball quickly hit its target and it was soon clear that it was another capture.

"Cinccino!" shouted Fumiyo as she turned to us holding her fingers up in a peace sign.

After listening to the Ranger's question I looked forward into the darkness of the cave and said, "Well, Fumiyo barely took any damage and Laurence will get that big rest he deserves. I say we keep moving forward."

Fumiyo quickly ran back towards me and climbed up my shoulders once more. She kept a big smile on her face as she was still excited about her performance in the battle.

"Well, Fumiyo barely took any damage and Laurence will get that big rest he deserves. I say we keep moving forward," Felix replied, looking at the tunnel ahead.

“Onwards then,” Makina said, walking ahead of the group. Aria, oddly enough, did not fall in beside her. Instead, the Gardevoir stuck next to Felix, still looking at the Trainer. Mind telling me what's going on?

<Later,> Aria replied. <Let's just say I'm... curious.>

Suit yourself, Makina shrugged, and led the group into the tunnel.

The tunnel path, while beginning with only small slope moving slightly upwards, became a real hike as they moved further on ahead. It was almost as if the trail was trying to make up for the lower path they had trudged upon earlier. After much walking (and silent grumbling by Makina), the path evened out once more. As if to reward them for their diligence, the cave exit was within sight as well, a bright speck in the not-so-far distance.

As they walked towards the exit, Makina noticed an odd shape lying in the shadows nearby. She thought nothing of it, thinking it to be a stray rock, when the object began to move slightly. As she shined her light upon the area, a small light orange Pokemon was illuminated, it's head covered by what appeared to be an old-style buckler. It was looking at the group with a curious look on it's face, but stayed still.

“Looks like a Shieldon. Want to go for it?” Makina asked Felix.

As the Ranger gave the call to motion forward, we began to walk once more into the darkness. Fortunately, this time we had flashlights which I probably could have used in the first place. I did make a mental note to not tell Belle about the flashlights. It would probably make her very sad. For a moment, I felt a strange aura at my side. I looked with the corner of my eye and noticed Aria right there next to me. It didn't bother me, but I did find it strange that she left her trainer's side outside of a battle.

We kept on walking for some time with the tunnel's ground constantly shifting until an exit was finally within sight. I was a bit sad that I didn't find what I was looking for inside the rest of the cave, but at least I had added a fire type to my team.

That's when the Ranger noticed something move nearby. It seemed to be yet another Steel type, Shieldon.

When I heard Ranger Makina's question I quickly answered, "No, let's leave this one alone. I'm eager to find some more fire types."

I smiled for a moment until I realized what I had just said. I had that confused looked in my face that simply said, "Wait...what?!"

I shook it off for a moment and added, "If it follows us, I'm okay with distracting it with a Pokedoll."

Felix looked over at the Shieldon a moment before finally shaking his head, "No, let's leave this one alone. I'm eager to find some more fire types."

Makina nodded at this. It made sense after all; he did mention at the beginning that he was mainly after- Wait a moment, did he actually seem happy to see more Fire-types just now? Makina realized, stealing a glance over at her Trainer and immediately had to smother a grin when she saw the look on Felix's face when he finally noticed what he had said.

"If it follows us, I'm okay with distracting it with a Pokedoll," Felix added, shaking off his confusion.

Thankfully, there appeared to be no need for a Doll. As soon as Felix had shaken his head, the Shieldon turned and walked away, going back down the tunnel without a second glance. As soon as the Pokemon was fully out of sight, Makina motioned for them to continue on to the exit.

They entered into sunlight; at least, what rays of light that could pierce the clouds above them. The smoke they had noticed from afar hovered slightly above, but not thick enough to hide any secrets. The trail was wider here, and appeared to branch off once more. The main path was much rockier, but led straight to the volcano. The second trail was more of a offshoot; it branched off to the left and was far more narrow, but led down to the lower areas.

As Makina turned around to ask Felix which way he would prefer, a stray object out of nowhere dropped down between the two trainers. It appeared to be a simple pebble, nothing more. As Makina looked up to see where the rock had come from, a second pebble was lobbed at her shoulder. “Ow! What in the world...”

A small chuckle coming from above answered her. Makina directed her gaze to a small ledge that overhung the tunnel they had just exited, and discovered a small, chimp-like creature. It's fire-red fur glinted from a ray of sunshine, and it held up yet another pebble for throwing.

“And we have been discovered by a Pansear,” Makina muttered. She was not much of a fan of the elemental monkey trio, but knew a few people were amused by their antics. “It seems to be quite the prankster. Interested in it?”

I was grateful that the shield Pokemon decided to just walk away as we headed forward. And finally, there it was, sunshine...more or less. We had actually made it a good way towards the volcano. I couldn't hide it. I was feeling very uneasy about the idea again, but regardless, I pushed myself forward. After all, I had to do this for the team. At that moment, I heard the Ranger complain about something.

I turned around and quickly put my hand over my mouth to hide the smile when I noticed what was going on. I quickly shoot it off as I heard Ranger Makina ask whether I was interested in capturing this Pokemon or not.

I looked straight at the Pansear and said, "hmm...No, I already have a fiery monster...I mean monkey back home to deal with. And he he'll have some answering to do when I get there."

I kept on walking, heading towards the path that lead straight to the volcano with a serious look on my face. I couldn't get the image of that Infernape off my mind.

I looked back and realized that I had started walking without the Ranger's approval.

"Oh, sorry about that. Please lead the way...and...uhh...yeah, a Pokedoll just in case. I REALLY don't think I want do battle this one," I added, now with an embarrassed tone.
