    Re: -|Christmas RP Event: ChainedReactions

I sat anxiously at my computer at the Docks. There was a raging snowstorm around the Island right now, which was strange. It was very rare that the storms of Mt Oktori got out of their ranges. The storm was so vicious that the ferries from the mainland had been stopped. We had a few Trainers locked in the Lodge, and there were even a few expeditions out in the National Park itself. I had filled out a request to go look for them, but most of the other Rangers had got in before me, and I had been relegated to desk duty. I felt it was pointless, though, as even though the Trainers were locked in from the outside most of them refused to leave the warmth anyway.

And so I had spent the last few days idling away at the computer, hoping that my request would go through. I hoped that the Park Warden would approve it, but he was a busy man and I couldn't be sure he'd even get it. I peered out the window - flurries of snow moved past, and a few icicles were even attached to the window. I sighed.

Suddenly, my computer beeped, and I saw I had a new email. I opened it, and began whooping with joy. The Warden had granted my request! I snatched open my drawer and grabbed my gadgets, as well as the three PokeBalls that rolled out, as if asking to go with me. As I was getting myself ready, I reached for Dual through our mind link.

Hey, buddy, you there? I asked him. We got permission to go looking for those groups still trapped out in the Park.

Even as I finished relaying the news, my small office was filled with a bright blue light which quickly faded away to reveal Dual, my Gallade. He nodded his greetings, then returned himself to his PokeBall. I ran out the door, and through the corridors until I was outside. Once I got outside, the cold started biting at me, but I didn't mind that much. I much preferred the cold to the heat. I pulled up the regulation emergency face protector, and winced as the scraggly material brushed across my skin.

I decided to go towards the Great Lakes - out of all the nearby locations, it was probably the worst place to get caught in a freak snowstorm. There were almost no trees, and God knows how much of the water itself was frozen solid. I ran towards the lake, and my hand drifted over my Electivire's PokeBall for no apparent reason. I just had a bad feeling, and if I needed backup Kai could take on most of the Pokemon found in the Lakes.

    Re: -|Christmas RP Event: ChainedReactions

I continued running, even after I passed through the large iron gates that separated the Great Lakes from the Docks. Soon, however, I started panting, and I knew I needed a rest. I wouldn't be doing the others any favours if I arrived to help them and then was too weak to do anything. Even worse, I might have to be rescued myself!

No. No, that wouldn't happen, I told myself. The Park Warden had let me go out searching, and in doing so he trusted me to do my job well. I couldn't let that trust down.

I bent over my knees, panting hard. All around me the snowstorm swirled, cutting visibility into shreds. I could see maybe fifteen metres away at best. It was really dangerous to run, I realised. I resolved to walk at a brisk pace, while keeping my eyes on the ground to make sure I didn't trip over anything.

As I was thinking about my next move, I head the snow behind me crunching, like someone was walking through it. I turned around, and to my surprise, I saw a Poliwag. Even more surprising, the little Pokemon hissed at me and then attempted to tackle me. I jumped back in alarm, and quickly threw Kai's PokeBall onto the ground in front of me. He burst out in a flash of red light, although the flash was more muted than usual and it was quickly whisked away by the snowstorm. The Poliwag saw it's opponent and hissed again.

"Kai, we don't want to hurt this little guy. I don't know why he's pissed, but our objective isn't to hurt him, it's to scare him off so we can continue searching for the others," I said to the hulking Electivire. "With that in mind, set up a Light Screen and then use Thunderpunch."

Kai rumbled his assent, and put both of his arms in front of him. I was glad that he agreed with me - sometimes he refused to follow my orders when he thought I wasn't being careful enough. A flat rectangular pane slowly swirled into existence in front of his palms, and as it did so it took on a vibrant purple colour. Interestingly, this light cut through the snowstorm like a hot knife through butter.

With a violent jerk, Kai moved his right arm, attaching the Light Screen to it like a shield. He then ran towards the Poliwag, keeping the purple screen between himself and the little blue Pokemon. As he ran, his left fist began shedding electrical sparks. It almost looked like one of the Tesla machines in the clubs I visited back on the mainland.

Kai ran forward towards the Poliwag, and at the last second he threw his left fist forward, slamming it into the tadpole Pokemon. The Poliwag was launched backwards, but the snow provided it with a safe landing. The furrow that was dug unintentionally by my Electivire's Thunderpunch was now a major problem. The Poliwag quickly got to its feet and used its tail to fling some mud at Kai. Kai managed to block most of the attack with his Light Screen, and thankfully none of it got in his eyes.

The Poliwag wasn't looking too good, and I didn't want to hurt it too much, so I should try to finish this as quickly as possible. "Kai, use Quick Attack to get close before it can respond, then nail it with one more solid Thunderpunch!" I called.

Kai wiped the mud off of his body with a shake of his furry arm, and then he charged towards Poliwag again. This time, however, he blurred forward at easily double the speed. I just hoped he'd be able to do enough damage to the Poliwag to scare it off so we could move on.

Kai moved insanely fast towards the Poliwag, leaving a large yellow streak and a smaller purple streak behind him. His fist was crackling with energy again, and once more he punched the Poliwag. This time, however, the Poliwag was ready for it. It resisted the punch enough that it wasn't sent spiraling through the air. Instinctively, Kai jumped backwards, away form the Poliwag in case it returned an attack.

As it turned out, that was a wise move. Straining all of it's muscles, the Poliwag managed to sling a glob of mud at Kai. I fought to think clearly despite the cold. The Mud Bomb would be devastating against Kai. However, the Poliwag's frail body meant that it wouldn't be able to sling the mud very high, and within that weakness was the solution to my problem.

"Kai, use Magnet Rise to hover away from the Mud Bomb, then send a Thundershock at it! That should be enough to scare it off," I called.

Kai crouched down, and blue energy gathered at his feet. When his feet were completely covered, he jumped up. The blue energy kept him suspended in the air, and he shifted his centre of gravty to the left, hoping to avoid the incoming attack. While doing so, small yellow flickers of electricity could be seen dancing along his right arm as he charged the Thundershock. Being a careful and serious Pokemon, Kai would wait for the Mud Bomb to get out of the way for him to fire his attack lest his attack be intercepted. That had happened once before - he'd launched an Ice Punch against a Medicham, only to be blocked by a Fire Punch. Well, hopefully that wouldn't happen this time.

The Mud Bomb sailed gracefully underneath Kai, splattering over the mud. The muted tones inside the sandstorm almost made the mud look like blood. I had to take a clear look at Kai to make sure he wasn't hurt.

He wasn't, though, Once he saw that the danger was past, he moved his right arm in a javelin-throwing motion, and a small lightning bolt left his arm and travelled towards the Poliwag. It struck the little creature on the rump. Startled, the Poliwag finally lost it's nerve and ran into the snowstorm. Kai grunted in dismissal, and slowly descended onto the ground. He also rammed his fist into his Light Screen shield, smashing it into little fragments which turned into dust as they hit the ground.

"Great work," I said to Kai. I was about to move on when I noticed something black on the ground. I picked it up. It was a double-pack of vac-stored Milk and Cookies. Pretty rare stuff, and I wouldn't expect to find it laying around out here. I shrugged, stored it in my pack, and moved on, slogging through the knee-deep snow.

We continued walking through the snow. I couldn't see any landmarks, but the ground felt firm, so I was pretty sure we weren't on a lake. Finally, we stumbled across a cabin of some sort. I couldn't read the sign, and furthermore the strange weather was interfering with the satellites so I couldn't use my PDA's GPS.

I decided to take a quick break inside the cabin. When I reached for the doorknob, however, I found that it had been sheared off. I kicked the door, and it swung in, revealing a Kingler sitting on the bed. For some reason, the TV was on, but the sound was muted. Startled by our sudden appearance, the Kingler launched a stream of bubbles at us.

"Hit the deck!" I screamed, and I dropped to the ground. As I rolled to the side, out of the Kingler's firing line, I screamed for Kai to use Thunder on it. Thunder was woefully inaccurate, and I usually wouldn't use it in battle, but perhaps the close range and confined space of the cabin would help Kai hit the Kingler. That is, if he hadn't been incapacitated by the Bubblebeam somehow.

As I looked up at Kai after recovering from my roll, from what I could see he had avoided the Bubblebeam. I looked away just as he launched the Thunder attack. A blast of searing white light assaulted my eyes, so I closed them tight and covered them with my mittened hand. When the light dissapeared, I saw that the back of the cabin had been blown off.

I sighed and shook my head. Maybe if I was lucky, no one would know that it was me that did this and it would be blamed on the storms. I could hope, I guess.

The Kingler had recovered unbelievably quickly, though. It burst out of the house and smashed Kai with it's larger claw in an upwards strike. It knocked Kai flying, and when he hit the ground snow flew everywhere. He climbed out of the crater he had just made, and snarled a challenge at the Kingler.

"Kai, the way to win is to stay away!" I called to him. "Kingler works with close-range attacks, so if you stay away from it there's very little danger!"

Kai grunted, and began backing away.

"Keep an eye on it, and hit it with a Thunderbolt!" I ordered.

Kai held his right arm out, with his palm facing the Kingler. He braced this arm with his left arm, and he dug his feet into the snow. Eelctricity began jumping between the black leads on his back, and a large yellow ball gathered just in front of his right palm. When he judged it was ready, he launched the attack. The ball broke open, and a lance of electricity shot towards the Kingler. I just hoped that Kai would be able to respond to whatever attack the Kingler was going to try to use next.

The lance of electricity struck the Kingler squarely, just as it was leaving the cabin. Sparkling arcs danced around the Kingler, and one of its' legs suddenly curled up underneath it. I looked through my Aura Reader, and although the snowstorm was throwing off my readings, I was pretty sure that the Thunderbolt attack had paralyzed it.

The Kingler's mouth started foaming in anger. It began scuttling sideways towards Kai, despite the gently spasming leg. As it did so, its smaller claw began glowing bright white, which was really bad. I could barely make it out amongst the snowstorm. It was probably a claw based attack, like Metal Claw or Vicegrip. Whatever it was, I didn't want it making contact with Kai. I was pretty sure that the Kingler wouldn't last much longer, so if I was lucky one last good shot would see it off.

"Kai, we need to scare it off now!" I yelled through chattering teeth. "Use Swift!"

I didn't often make use of Swift. It was a great move in that it always hit the opponent, but it was by no means one of the greatest weapons in Kai's arsenal. Kai was largely a physical attacker, and Swift relied on the users ability to manipulate energy as opposed to brute strength. Furthermore, because Swift wasn't an electrical attack, it wouldn't be as damaging as Thunderbolt or Thunderpunch.

Nonetheless, I was betting that the damage Swift would do would be enough to see the Kingler off. Also, taking into consideration the distance between the two and Kingler's paralysis, Kai should be able to attack before the giant crab.

Kai curled his arms into his body, assuming a pose somewhat reminiscent of a boxer. He then swung his arms out, revealing his chest. Six glowing yellow stars flew out in an arc before beginning to home in on the Kingler. I bit my lip, wondering who would strike first.

The stars smashed into the Kingler, just before it got within swiping range of Kai. It was knocked back a metre or so, but it stayed on its feet. It watched Kai carefully for half a minute before grudgingly scuttling away.

I was about to walk into the cabin to warm up but then I noticed another black/gray object in the snow. I bent down to pick it up, and it was another vaccum-pack of milk and cookies. This was getting weird. Shaking my head to clear my mind, I held the door open for Kai to come inside. Only then did I remember that he had blown out the back of the hut with his earlier Thunder attack.

I sighed for the lost chance of getting warm, and moved out through the gaping hole in the wall. Kai followed me, happy to be moving on. As we moved off into the snowstorm, I didn't see the note taped to the television...

After walking for another ten minutes, I managed to hear the splashing of waves over the sound of the whirling wind. Using a thick stick I found on the ground, I began to make my way forward carefully, testing ground with the stick. Finally, the stick didn't find solid purchase - it sunk into water. I retracted it and licked it - it was salty. I'd found one of the many saltwater lakes. That didn't help by itself - indeed, the largest (and first) lake was a saltwater lake.

Suddenly, I had an idea. "Kai, light this up, would you?" I asked my Electivire. He grunted, and his left hand caught on fire. He grasped the dry end of the stick firmly, and the fire moved onto it greedily. I nodded my thanks. Now, my vision had extended to twenty metres or so. I was sure it was getting close to night-time, but I had no way to tell. It was just blinding grey and white.

I saw that I was on the edge of the lake - thankfully I hadn't strayed out onto open water. I began walking around it, hoping to find my way to the higher lakes. Maybe I could get up above the storm.

Suddenly, I heard a large crash. I whipped around and saw a huge Cloyster smash through some ice. If my experiences today had taught me anything, I knew it would be looking for a fight. Well, I was going to get in a pre-emptive strike for once. and I had a perfect plan.

"Kai, shoot a Thunderbolt at the Cloyster! Try your hardest to knock it onto some ice where it can't escape! Then, get up there and use Low Kick!" I called.

I knew that Cloyster had good physical defense because of its shell, but the Low Kick's supereffectiveness should help get past that. My only worry at this point in time was that Kai would fall into the lake. Hopefully, once/if he performed the Low Kick, he's get back onto dry land before the Cloyster recovered.

Kai roared, and launched a blue bolt of electricity at the Cloyster from his right hand. Some of the ice partially melted along the way, making steam rise up into the fog, further decreasing visibility. I hoped this wouldn't make Kai's Low Kick harder to perform.
