We'd been walking through the snow for ten minutes when I noticed Dual was shivering. Unlike me, he didn't like the cold, but he was too proud to say anything. Without a word, I pulled the holster off of him and returned him to his Poke Ball.

<I was fine to keep going!> he exclaimed.

I ignored him and kept walking on. I heard some crunching sounds in the snow, but when I turned to look I couldn't see anything. I shrugged, and began moving through another tree grove. Hell, it could have been the grove where Dual had battled the Toxicroak - I had no earthly idea where I was.

I heard the crunching again, so I decided to roll away just in case something was following me. As it turns out, it was a wise move. A large red claw passed through the air where my torso had been not a second ago. I looked up in surprise - it was the Kingler from before.

I was glad I had returned Dual - Kinglers were pretty tough when it came to hand-to-hand combat. I needed a long-range attacker, which meant either Flash or Kai, and Kai would still be pretty tired. I grabbed Flash's Poke Ball and flung it straight up into the air before scrambling away. The ball burst open and released my Starmie, returning to my hand after it had done so. Flash chimed a greeting.

"No time for hellos, hit that crab with a Thunderbolt!" I yelled.

Flash chimed again and began spinning in midair. Small charges of electricity began flowing out the red gem in its centre, and the spinning caused the charges to become sphere-shaped, almost completely covering Flash. Flash then condensed the sphere into a tiny point and a lance of yellow energy blasted out towards the Kingler.

As soon as the Kingler saw Flash charging the Thunderbolt attack, it began bouncing up and down, stretching its muscles so that it would be able to match the Starmie's speed. When the Thunderbolt attack was launched, the crab tried to out-run it, but Flash was too fast. The lightning drilled into the crab, knocking it back. Even as it moved back, though, it spat some light blue bubbles. The bubbles moved surprisingly fast, striking Flash and popping.

Flash chimed uncomfortably, and I noticed there were a few light blue spots on her purple exterior. The Bubblebeam attack had probably affected her maneuverability.

"Alright, let's stay long-range," I said to Flash. "Raise your defenses with Cosmic Power then hit the Kingler with a Psychic attack!"

Flash made a strange tinkling sound, and was suddenly covered with a silver sheen, surrounded by many sparkling lights that reminded me of the starry night sky. Just as the sheen and the sparkles began to fade, a purple lance of energy shot out of Flash's jewel, heading straight for the Kingler. Because Flash was part Psychic, it didn't need time to charge the attack, unlike the Thunderbolt from before.

The Psychic blast smashed into the Kingler, knocking it backwards in the snow. It was amazing to watch Flash fight - most of my Pokemon were physical attackers.

The Kingler finally stopped moving backwards, deflecting the last of the Psychic attack with its claw. It then drew it's claw back, preparing to throw something at Flash.

My mind slowed down. Flash had access to Protect like Dual, but using it severely tired out both Pokemon. I should save it for emergencies. Besides, now that Flash had raised defences, whatever the Kingler was going to throw wouldn't do as much damage, and Flash could always just Recover its health later on. No, the best thing to do was to try and finish this beast off.

"Flash, go for the win with Swift!" I yelled.

Even as the Kingler began to swing its claws, Flash launched a group of silver spinning stars, which curved through the air like homing missiles. I chose Swift because it very rarely missed, and it should have enough power to send the Kingler running. Lastly, even though it wasn't Water types or Psychic typed, Swift was one of Flash's natural moves so again there was no need to prepare it.

The Kingler swung its claw at Flash, and a big mess off mud and stones flew through the air, smacking into Flash and knocking it to the ground. Thankfully the Swift's accuracy meant that Flash didn't need to concentrate. The white stars swung through the air and drilled into the Kingler's hard shell, making scraping sounds as they did so.

The Kingler made a discomforted bubbling sound and began backing away. Flash chimed its victory cry, and I returned it to its ball. Flash was my backup card - I didn't want to use it unless I absolutely had to. I put my hand on Kai's ball - he'd been resting long enough. He could have first crack at whatever came along next.

As I walked along, I was now almost positive there was no one here. I saw two small Christmas pom-pom hats trodden into the snow - I picked them up and stowed them in my bag before moving on.

I'd been walking for about five minutes when Flash released itself from its Poke Ball. I had tinkered with my balls so that the Pokemon inside them could release themselves whenever the wanted - truth be told, I felt uncomfortable cramming my friends into tiny little spheres. Even after Dual had used his telepathy to show me what being in a Poke Ball was like (a representation of the Pokemon's home environment) I still didn't like it.

I removed my hand from Kai's ball. Apparently Flash felt like it should be battling a bit more, and I didn't want to deny my Pokemon that right, so we moved on.

As it turned out, it was lucky Flash decided to come out when it did. Suddenly, out of the white, a large Poliwrath jumped out from a large snowdrift and threw a punch at me. Flash pushed me backwards, out of harm's way, and instead of waiting for me to call an attack it sent a Psychic shockwave flying at the Poliwrath, attempting to knock it away from me.

Dual and Flash had trained the Psychic: Shockwave Style together. It was Dual's technique originally, but now that he was a mostly physical fighter the Starmie was the most adept at it. Psychic energy was contained in a small space and excited until it was comparable to a small hurricane in strength. Flash would then let the shockwave exit towards the target. This use of Psychic didn't do as much direct damage as a simple telekinetic attack, but it had a greater pushback and so could deal extra damage if the target hit a rock or something.

Flash’s shockwave crashed into the Poliwrath, and because it was already off balance it flew even further. It crashed into the snow a good fifteen metres away, and it groaned as it got up.

I unconsciously copied it. When I was standing up, I saw that the Poliwrath was stretching its muscles out using its white gloved hands. I recognised the move as Bulk Up – the very same move that Dual used so often.

Before I could call an attack, it began running towards Flash and me. Its right hand was glowing orange, and little lines of light squiggled off it and through the air as it ran. I didn’t know what the move was for certain, but it was probably Dynamicpunch or something equally as dangerous. I was now happy that Flash hadn’t used Protect earlier – it would be easier to use it now.

“Flash, use Protect to ride out this attack, then retaliate with a Thunderbolt!” I called out as I took a few steps back.

Flash stopped spinning and dropped to the ground, landing with a thud in the snow. A whitish aura began covering it – I hoped the Protect would fully form before the incoming attack landed.

Unfortunately when the Poliwrath's attack smashed into Flash, the Protect wasn't fully-formed, so Flash took some damage from the attack but was protected from the side-effects. As the Poliwrath stepped back and prepared to unleash a second attack, a small blast of electricity released from Flash pushed it into the air and through the snow again. When it got back up, instead of re-engaging, it backed off and ran away.

"Good job Flash," I said wearily. There were two more vacpacs of Milk and Cookies laying on the scraped-away ground where the Poliwrath had landed. I picked them up and we moved on, looking for more people.

We continued moving on, and soon came to a bridge. I looked at Flash and shrugged - we might as well cross it, it's the first landmark I had seen in a while that I knew I hadn't seen before. As I crossed it, Flash called a warning in its erratic voice. I quickly dropped onto the bridge, and two glowing green darts thudded into the wood above me. I looked through the cracks - a Qwilfish was attacking us.

I hated Qwilfish - they had a decently wide movepool and had a nasty habit of using Destiny Bond to kill off high-strength Pokemon. I'd have to watch out for that when it started to run out of energy.

"Flash, let's open this nice and simple - use you Hidden Power on it!" I called.

Flash chimed, and began rotating its stars really fast in opposite directions. A green orb began growing just out from each of Flash's tips - luckily, her Hidden Power was Grass typed. When the orbs were the size of its jewel, they would buzz through the air towards the Qwilfish. The attack would be hard to dodge, too, because there would be ten or more orbs to worry about at the same time.

All of the buzzing orbs smashed into the Qwilfish, but just before they made contact the spiky fish launched its own attack. It spat a goopy black ball from its mouth which moved in an arc-like trajectory. It splattered on Flash, and the goop sizzled away at the Starmie before fading away. Luckily, she didn't seem to be any worse for wear.

I looked back over to the Qwilfish, and I saw that it was slowly expanding its body, probably using some kind of defensive technique. That means it was a good time for Flash to do the same.

"Flash, that thing is raising its defences," I called, "copy it by using Cosmic Power. Then, when you're done, hit it with a nice hard Thunderbolt!"

Just like before, Flash began to be covered by a bright white aura, and small sparkles of light reminiscent of stars revolved around it. I waited patiently for her to began charging the Thunderbolt attack.

The twinkling light slowly faded away, and I could just see a silver film covering Flash's body. Hopefully that's keep some of the damage off of Flash.

It rose high into the sky, and began spinning. Within a couple seconds, six lances of lightning spread out and smashed into the Qwilfish, spreading out through the water.

The Qwilfish shuddered, and expanded its body to a dangerous side. Suddenly, the body contracted again, and a string of small spike shot out of the water and crashed into Flash. I recognised the attack as Pin Missile - it was super effective against Flash, but the Qwilfish didn't have enough power behind the attack to do any serious damage.

"Alright Flash, get back some of your health with Recover and then hit it with a Psychic attack!" I called. The Psychic should be able to knock it out and then we could move on, and Flash's health would be good for more fights later on.
