I was sitting in my desk when my assistant came running in the room.

"Leo, why are you still sitting here?" Marko, my trainee said as he barged into my office. I raised my eyebrow and looked at my watch. I was getting a bit hungry, but I could not eat now, I had too much to do. I was surprised I still had energy left inside of me.

"Why not, I am not suppose to be doing anything right now?" I said, wondering if I was actually suppose to be anywhere. He tossed a file towards me. I grabbed it and opened it up. I shook my head and looked up at him, then back down at the file.

"You forgot again." He laughed, letting out a small sigh. "You need to get going." I looked through the file and shook my head. I could not believe I forgot about this one. I usually didn't forget things, but I did this time.

"What would I do without you." I said with a wide grin on my face. I grabbed my bag of ranger goodness and whistled loudly. I aslo picked up several green spherical orbs and pocketed them. Shadow came running into my office, letting out a eager howl. "Let's go Shadow, we've got to meet up with our Trainer." I looked outside and saw that the weather was pretty nice. The sun was shining bright and the clouds were limited. It was said in the forcast that there was a 50 percent chance of rain, but I highly doubted that was going to happen, not with the way it looked outside. We ran out of the Headquarters and I saw a teenage Trainer standing by a pole.

"Hey, you must be Jathan!" I called out to the boy. "I am Ranger Leo, and this here is Shadow." Shadow let out a small bark as his tail wagged. "When you are ready to go, let me know."

"Alright, let's go," I said. I checked my backpack and my gauntlet, and then I followed Ranger Leo as he led me down a path lined with small shrubs towards a large forest in the distance.
Ralts poked his head up through the zipper in my bag, and rubbed his horn against the back of my neck, vibrating slightly. It reminded me of the purr of a kitten.
Ralts then climbed up onto my shoulder, where he saw Leo and his Houndoom. Ralts emitted a high-pitched squeak and retreated behind my shoulder. The Houndoom looked back at me over its' shoulder, but made no sound.
"Look, mate, there's nothing to be afraid of," I said to Ralts, lifting him over my shoulder and presenting him to Shadow. Shadow sniffed Ralts, then gave him a small lick and ran back to Leo's side.
I smiled.
Ralts also seemed to approve, as he made a happy sound and then clambered back into my backpack. Ralts didn't mind being in a PokeBall, but he seemed to prefer being outside and I didn't mind that.
I also noticed that Leo was a bit ahead of me. I jogged up to him.
"So, anything I should know?" I asked him. "Like, I know all the rules and stuff, I read the posters and disclaimers on the way over, but is there anything about the Forest in particular that I should know?"

I thought about it, but nothing came to mind. Shadow pulled on my red Ranger shorts, flicking his arrow shaped tail towards the grass. "Oh right! We may stumble onto areas with high grass, so watch out for sleeping Pokemon and be cautious. Other than that we are good to go! Just hold on to your Ralts and we'll be there in no time." I said as I pulled out a black and silver Pokeball and tossing it besides me. A magnificent green humanoid Psychic Pokémon stood before us. Her elegant ballroom looking gown swayed gracefully from side to side as she began to chant some sorf of spell.

"Gar-De-Voir!" She shouted as a bright blinding light engulfed us all, and in a matter of minutes we were at Ranger Post.

As the white light in front of my eyes dissolved, I saw a forest cabin in the middle of a clearing. Various Bug Pokemon like Caterpie and Paras were foraging under the leaves and I could also hear birdcalls.
The light was dim, even though my watch said it was only 12:30. When I looked up I could not even see the sky.
"Wow, its' dark in here," I said.
Leo smiled and pointed up.
A group of Volbeat was being led in a dance by a single Illumise. I smiled and pointed it out to Ralts, who watched and cheered.
"So, where do you want to go from here?" Leo asked, returning his Gardevoir to its' PokeBall.
I shrugged. Then I heard a very familiar sound: an Eevee call.
"Wherever that's coming from!" I yelled, spinning around and running into the forest after the sound.

"Wherever that's coming from!" He yelled as he looked for the sound he had heard. I didn't hear anything, but I looked around anyways as if I had heard something as well. After looking around, I decided it would be best to just start walking. I saw a narrow dirt path that appeared to be safe enough to travel into.

"Let's just go through here and see where it leads up." I called back as I started into the path. The sun was shining bright in the sky. Shadow appeared to like this weather. I heard some footsteps a couple of feet to my left. I looked behind me and saw that Jathan was still behind me. I turned and didn't see anything but a small weird looking tree. I shook my head and continured walking.

A few seconds later, I heard the same footsteps again. I quickly turned to my left and saw that tree again. Then it hit me, it was a Sudowoodo.

"Looks like this tree is actually a Sudowoodo, want to battle it or leave it alone?" I asked, waiting for an answer.

"Want to battle it or leave it alone?" Leo asked.
I looked at the tree- wait, the Sudowoodo. It looked quite strong, and it probably used physical attacks. My Ralts probably couldn't take too many of those.
"Nah, I might leave off," I laughed. "It looks just a little too strong for me to tackle right now."
Leo shrugged and smiled and we continued off along the trail under the trees which hid the sun from sight.

I understood what he meant, so I just shrugged and nodded. We continued walking down the dirt path until we reached a split on the path. There were two choices. On one path, I could hear a soft, faint, buzzing sound. On the other I could feel heavy steps, or something causing the ground to shake.

"Which way do you want to go?" I asked, waiting for an answer before we moved on.

I considered it. Whatever was making those big thudding noises was probably quite strong, and I didn't want to put Ralts into a dangerous situation. However, the buzzing sounded like a Bug-type, which would be detrimental to Ralts as well.
"Well," I said under my breath, "I can always bug out later on."
I laughed at my horrible pun, then turned to Leo and said, "Let's go down the path with the buzzing."

"Let's go down the path with the buzzing." He said. I shrugged and nodded.

"Alright, let's go down that path!" I called out as I had taked off into the dirt path. It appeared to be smaller than before. The buzzing sound was getting louder and louder. I was surprised we hadn't found the source of the sound yet. Then I heard a loud swooshing sound as two poison needles darted right in between Jathan and me. I turned and saw a large, angry bee Pokemon. Its wings were flapping at a fast pace and it was moving in a circular motion. It looked as if it were about to attack.

"It looks like it wants to battle you!" I told Jathan.

Oh man, this is not good, I thought to myself. Beedrill has good attack, and high special defence too!
However, I knew that I could not run, because Beedrill have access to the move Pursuit. If I ran and Pursuit hit Ralts, I'd be in some serious trouble.
"Okay Ralts, it looks like we've got a battle!" I said.
Ralts stuck his head out of my backpack, looked at the Beedrill, then jumped in front of me and trilled his defiance.
"That's the way!" I yelled. "Use Charm to lower its' attack, but be very careful!"

"Okay Ralts, it looks like we've got a battle!" He said as his Ralts jumped into battle. "That's the way! Use Charm to lower its' attack, but be very careful!"

Ralts surrounded herself with hearts and made a cute face at the Beedrill, throwing it off a little bit. The Beedrill launched several little missles at the small Psychic Pokemon, most of them missing however. Two of the many missle managed to hit the Ralts, making it flinch a little, but it kept the face it was making. The Beedrill appeared to be a bit distracted by this.

(OOC: Okay, I wasn't sure because I know that you decide the success/failure of Ralts' moves. For future reference, do I post like I have been, ending in the use of a move, or do I post like it worked and then edit it later?)

My heart leapt into my mouth as Beedrill fired loads of little needles at Ralts. That was either a Bug type move, or one which could poison Ralts. Neither outcome was a good one.
The swarm of needles flew at Ralts, but only a few struck him. He bravely maintained the hearts, and continued smiling at Beedrill. The Beedrill hovered in front of Ralts, looking slightly confused.
I exhaled with relief. It looked like Ralts hadn't taken much damage, and he certainly wasn't poisoned.
I quickly evaluated the battle. Ralts was still quite healthy, and Beedrill's attack had been weakened by Ralts' Charm. I decided to go on the offensive before Beedrill could damage Ralts with a stronger move.
"Ralts, great job!" I said. "How are you going?"
Ralts squeaked with a high inflection, and I couldn't detect any strain in his voice. Excellent.
"Okay, get ready for a push, mate," I said. "Use Psychic on Beedrill, and try to smash it into something! But remember, we're trying to catch a team-mate, not obliterate a rival!"
Ralts chirruped. He looked around and saw a pair of thick branches crossing over each other to form an X right behind the Beedrill.
Perfect.
Ralts' horn was enveloped by a blue nimbus. It continued to Charm the Beedrill.
I was worried by this. Charm and Psychic were both quite high-level moves, and if Ralts wasn't careful, he'd push himself too far. I knew Ralts couldn't maintain both of these moves for long, so Beedrill would need to take some fair damage before I could think about throwing a ball and ending this battle. Hopefully, Psychic would do enough damage to make a Hypnosis viable.
Ralts unleashed the Psychic at the Beedrill, aiming to smash it into the crossed branches. It continued to maintain the hearts and smile.

"Okay, get ready for a push, mate," He said. "Use Psychic on Beedrill, and try to smash it into something! But remember, we're trying to catch a team-mate, not obliterate a rival!"

Ralts nodded, acknowledging that it understood what it was being asked to do. The Beedrill also understood what was going on. He crossed his stingers, which began glowing a bright green color. He brought them down hard, sending an x-shape energy attack towards the Ralts, what the Beedrill didn't notice was that a pair of thick branches formed behind him, also making an x shape. The Ralts brought them down hard on the Beedill. The Beedrill made a loud shireking sound as it was hit from behind. The X-Scissor attack was coming in fast on the Ralts.

OOC: Sweet. Also, I read somewhere that Park Balls (the low level ones) don't work on evolved Pokemon. Is this true?

I watched with satisfaction as Ralts moved the branches towards the Beedrill slowly.
However, Ralts wasn't fast enough. The Beedrill crossed it's stingers over and shot a green x-shaped beam of energy towards Ralts.
"Quickly, Ralts!" I yelled.
Ralts abandoned the Charm and quickly smashed the two branches into the Beedrill. It emitted a loud keen as both the branches snapped in half because of the force Psychic was exerting on them. Splinters flew everywhere.
Beedrill recovered, however, and buzzed back up to about my eye-height as the energy attack neared Ralts.
I started to panic a little.
That attack was obviously Bug-Type, and even though Beedrill's physical attack was much better than its' special attack, this attack would still hurt alot. If I let it hit.
"Ralts, Teleport somewhere safe, like up a tree, and hit it with another Psychic! Try to hit it exactly as hard as last time, that was perfect!"
Ralts squeaked and moved his arms to Teleport as the X-Scissor moved in...

"Ralts, Teleport somewhere safe, like up a tree, and hit it with another Psychic! Try to hit it exactly as hard as last time, that was perfect!"

Ralts began chanting as it swayed back and forth, glowing white as it did. It teleported a few feet to the right, then beginning to glow a deep blue color as his body, and the body of the Beedrill connected. The Beedrill flinched a little as it tried to break free.

The Beedrill finally managed to break free as it roared in pain. It opened its mouth and released a purple wind, hitting Ralts directly.

Ralts hadn't teleported as far as I had hoped he would. That was okay, though, obviously the battle had tired him.
The green X-Scissor flew past Ralts.
"Thank God," I muttered underneath my breath.
Ralts then started using Psychic again. This time, however, the Beedrill itself began to glow blue. Obviously Ralts hadn't seen anything to use like last time.
The Beedrill started trying to break free. It roared and buzzed and eventually escaped Psychic's grip. As it did so, it breathed a purple mist, which immediately struck Ralts.
Ralts doubled over, but quickly regained control of himself.
As I was trying to quickly decide what to do next, I remembered something.
And then I kicked myself.
I remembered, back in the Park Shop, that Park Balls and Super Balls couldn't catch Stage 2 or 3 Pokemon.
"Damnit!" I swore. "Ralts, we can't catch this Beedrill! We don't have the equipment!"
Ralts keened, but didn't move to disengage.
"What, you want to keep fighting?"
Ralts squeaked and nodded.
"Fair enough, at least its' experience and one step closer to evolution," I replied. However, I didn't want Ralts using high-level attacks, he was tired enough. "Okay, Ralts, time for some status effects! Use Confusion!"
Ralts' horn glowed blue again, and he started conjuring strange apparitions and trying to swing the Beedrill around.

"What, you want to keep fighting?" He asked. Ralts squeaked and nodded. I was impressed that they wanted to keep going, I waited to see what they were going to do.

"Fair enough, at least its' experience and one step closer to evolution," He replied. "Okay, Ralts, time for some status effects! Use Confusion!" Ralts' horn began to glow a blue color as the same color encased the Bee Pokemon, weaking it to a critical point. This battle was as good as over, but I waited to see what he would do. The Beedrill made an attempt to use one last attack. Beedrill charged at the Ralts with its large stingers , repeatedly stabbing at the Ralts. It was getting closer and closer to the Psychic Pokemon.

I felt like such a failure. I had used my Ralts to weaken a Pokemon that I intended to capture before checking that I had the equipment neccessary to perform the capture. He had been trying his best, and even worse, he had taken a fair bit of damage, all because I sucked.

Ralts didn't appear to pick up on my internal turmoil, because his Confusion attack weakened Beedrill to a critical level. Strangely, this made me feel even worse. If only I had a Hyper Ball, I would be in the perfect position to capture this Beedrill.

The Beedrill sensed that it only had a small amount of time left, and so it raised its' stingers and began jabbing rapidly while flying towards Ralts. I knew from the way Ralts' shoulders were shaking slightly that he was getting very tired. I didn't want to risk over-exerting him with another Teleport, so I gave a very simple command.

"Ralts! Try to roll away and use Confusion to finish this!"

Without a sound, Ralts dropped to a knee and started rolling on the ground to the right, looking just like a young schoolchild during recess. I held my breath and hoped that the Beedrill's attack wouldn't hit, or at least, that Ralts wouldn't be poisoned.

"Ralts! Try to roll away and use Confusion to finish this!" He said. This battle was as good as over either way. The Ralts did a cartwheel out of the way, then began to glow a bright green color which engulfed the Beedrill. The Beedrill couldn't take it anymore and buzzed off the way it came.

"Well, now that that is over, what do you want to do now?

I sighed in relief as the Beedrill buzzed off. Ralts had half-rolled, half-cartwheeled off to the side and then fired a quick green Confusion at the Beedrill, and it had left in the direction it came.

"Good fight, Ralts!" I called.

He trilled as he ran back to me on his stubby little legs. I was so proud of him, he was an unevolved Basic and he had fended off a Stage 2. One he had a type disadvantage to as well.

He jumped up and hugged my face. I rubbed his head, then gave him a small bag of treats.

"Jump back in and take a rest," I said. "I got no idea when our next fight will be."

Ralts chirruped, and grabbed the small plastic pouch before clambering over my shoulder and climbing into my backpack. The pack rumbled about slightly and I could hear the sounds of enthusiastic snacking.

Leo watched all of this with a smile.

"Well, now that that is over, what do you want to do now?" he asked me.

I considered this. Despite the high of the win, I still felt terrible about putting Ralts through an essentially useless battle. At least it was a lesson learned - for this excursion, I could only catch unevolved Pokemon. I remembered my earlier brush with the Sudowoodo, and I regretted not attempting to catch it.

I looked around. It was almost twilight, just after 4:00 according to my watch. I saw that the clearing we were in was fairly small, and two paths lead of in different directions than the one we came from. One path lead in the exact opposite direction, towards a darker part of the forest, where the trees grew even closer together.

The other path was to my right, and seemed to travel almost perpendicular to the last path. I saw a white wooden fence, partially overgrown, leading along this path.

I figured that the fenced path was a safer bet, as moving further into the forest would probably bring me up against stronger foes, and a Beedrill was probably the strongest thing I wanted to come up against right now. Also, this way we'd be closer to the Outpost in case we needed it.

"Let's go along that path to the right," I said, pointing at it.

Leo looked at it, shading his eyes with his hands, then nodded and led the way.
