    vs. Wurmple BP6

Ralts stood on his knees, panting. Wurmple was heading straight for him. He had to do something quick; however, he knew his trainer would come through for him.

“Ralts! Use the finisher plan!” Ralts must have known what the “finisher” plan was. He looked up and the Wurmple at the last minute, right before the Pokémon was about to hit him, then his eyes glowed light blue. Wurmple stopped dead in its tracks, and then fell to the ground, asleep.

Then, Ralts looked down at the sleeping Pokémon and his eyes changed from glowing light blue to red. Wurmple started to glow. A strange bright aura was emitted from the Wurmple and floated to Ralts, who seemed to absorb the aura. While he did that, he seemed to get stronger.

He must be using Dream Eater now, I thought. Dream Eater worked only on sleeping Pokémon. The user would literally eat the victims dream and turn it into an energizing meal, kind of like how a plant converts sunlight into sugar.

Suddenly, the tides had turned. The Pokémon seemed to be evenly matched, but now Ralts had gained the upper hand. Now, all he had to do was slowly whittle Wurmple’s health down, that is, until Wurmple woke up. Hopefully, the Pokémon would stay asleep in time for Jathan to capture it.

Meanwhile, Wurmple was stirring in his sleep. He had been dreaming of evolving. His pinkish-red skin had started to glow white when suddenly he stopped. What a nightmare!

The finisher plan, like usual, had come through. The Wurmple had been put to sleep, and glowing blue orbs ranging in shade from painfully bright to unbelievably dark seeped from the Wurmple, floating over to Ralts, where Ralts' own dark blue aura would absorb them.

I noticed that Ralts was not panting anymore: while Dream Eater mode was not as refreshing as resting, and didn't restore HP as much as medicines and Potions, it certainly did well enough in the heat of battle, and I was proud of the fact that this was Ralts' third battle in the Park and I hadn't had to use any items on him yet.

The Wurmple snoozed as his health was continually drained. My principle worry here was that the Wurmple would wake up unexpectedly. Dream Eater mode left Ralts immobile, and it took some time to switch it off. However, Dream Eater was Ralts' most powerful move, and I wanted Ralts to heal a little more and do some more damage before I attempted a capture.

"Ralts, stay in Dream Eater a little longer," I called. "This battle isn't the last one, and you'll need as much health as you can get!"

    vs. Wurmple BP7

Ralts continued to use Dream Eater on the Pokémon. Meanwhile, Wurmple continued to sleep. Ralts was steadily gaining more and more strength from the attack. Pretty soon, he would be at full health and gain all of his energy back. It wouldn’t even matter if Wurmple woke up any more because Ralts would be more than able to take him on.

Wurmple started to stir more in his sleep. This time, he was about to evolve and was suddenly picked up by a Staraptor while he was in the middle of evolving. Luckily he had gotten away. He had to hurry and get somewhere safe where he could evolve without any interruptions. What was up with all of these bad dreams?

Suddenly, I saw that Wurmple was starting to shift positions. Maybe he was about to wake up. I told Jathan what I thought was about to happen to alert him since I knew that it took a while for Dream Eater to deactivate.

The Wurmple was beginning to shift uneasily. I could tell by the fledgling empathic link that Ralts wasn't yet at full health, but he didn't need to be. I had some healing items, and he could always use Dream Eater later on in a different battle.

No, what was important right now was catching this Wurmple, and if I attempted a capture before it woke up, it had a much greater chance of being caught.

"Ralts! Switch out of Dream Eater!" I called. "I'm gunna try to catch it!"

Ralts chirruped, and immediately the blue orbs stopped appearing from the Wurmple. The last few orbs floated laboriously over to Ralts as his dark blue aura diminished, signaling that he was ending the Dream Eater.

I didn't have time for him to finish. I had to throw the ball before the Wurmple woke up.

I quickly dropped my bag and scrabbled around inside it. I could throw either a Park Ball or a Super Ball. A Super Ball would give me a better chance of a capture, but I didn't have many left and I might need them later on.

I decided on a Park Ball. I took aim at the slowly-moving Wurmple, and my arm snapped forward, sending the little sphere flying through the air towards the sleeping Bug Pokemon.

(Your chance of success was 98% and I roll a 99. @[email protected] What kind of luck is that?)
    vs. Wurmple BP8

Jathan decided to take the chance use the time that Wurmple was asleep to capture it. After some contemplating, he decided on using a Parkball instead of a Superball. After all, Wurmple was an easy Pokémon to capture. It didn’t need an advanced Pokeball to be captured. It would be wiser to save the Superball for a stronger Pokémon.

He took the ball in his palm and chucked it at the sleeping Wurmple. The Pokeball bounced off of Wurmple and released a stream of red light, which engulfed the Wurmple. When the light receded, only the Pokeball was left. It wiggled from side to side. Jathan, Ralts, Luxray and I watched eagerly. After a few seconds, Wurmple burst out of the Pokeball and woke up. The Parkball flew back into Jathan's hand like a boomerang.

Wurmple spotted Ralts standing there. For some reason, the Pokémon was stronger than before. Was he draining his energy while he was asleep? He remembered that Ralts had used Hypnosis on him and caused all of those bad dreams. The Pokémon, now angry, charged at Ralts with his teeth exposed. Bug Bite was his strongest and most effective attack against this Psychic Pokémon and he was going to use it the most he could.

OOC: Sounds like my kinda luck ':|

The ParkBall absorbed the Wurmple in a flash of red light. The ball shook, and I knew that this was the Wurmple fighting the capture mechanism.

Surprisingly, after a few seconds, the ball broke open with a flash of red light, the Wurmple appeared out of the flash. The ball flew back to my hand and the Wurmple yawned as it woke up.

I swore mentally. I was sure that it would have been a capture.

The Wurmple looked around, become more enraged. Finally, it saw Ralts, and it began charging Ralts, baring its teeth for a Bug Bite.

I had to think quickly. I didn't really want to throw a Ball just yet, and the Wurmple might be ready to dodge it. I had to get Ralts to distract it.

That wasn't a problem in and of itself - the end of the battle was near, and Ralts wasn't tired thanks to Dream Eater. The challenge would be doing damage to the Wurmple without knocking it out. I would have liked to put it to sleep again, but it would be anticipating that and I wasn't going to risk a Bug Bite just for a capture advantage.

I realised that Ralts had one more move left, and it was perfect for this situation.

"Ralts, Double Team away then use Magical Leaf!" I called.

I could see it in my mind's eye. Ralts would move away in three of four different directions, and each clone would launch a few rainbow-glowing leaves at the Wurmple. Seeing as the Wurmple was resistant to Grass-type attacks, it wouldn't hurt the Wurmple too much, and then I could throw the ParkBall agan. Furthermore, I KNEW the leaves would hit, because they always did.

I tensed my arm, ready to throw the Ball the second the Wurmple was hit by the leaves...

(Capture hasn't been approved yet, but I sent the request to Tyranitex. Just gonna go ahead and post so we can continue our run. :))

    vs. Wurmple BP9

Wurmple woke up and started to charge at Ralts; however, as usual, Jathan had a plan.

"Ralts, Double Team away then use Magical Leaf!”

Ralts nodded. Then, he split into four different copies of himself. Like the last time, only one of them was the real Ralts instead of a shadow.

Not this again, Wurmple thought. This attack had given him trouble the last time Ralts had used it, and like last time, Wurmple had to pick one and hope that it was the real one. Wurmple continued to dash forward with his teeth still exposed. He lunged at the Ralts directly in front of him and went straight through it. The shadow vanished into nothing. Wurmple landed on his feet. When he turned around, a bunch of rainbow-colored leaves were headed right at him. The attack hit and knocked him on the ground. Fortunately, for Wurmple and Jathan, he was resistant against this grass-type attack, so it wasn’t enough to knock him unconscious; however, it did knock him off of his feet.

Jathan took aim at the Wurmple as soon as he fell to the ground. He tossed the camo-colored Pokeball. A ray of light flashed from the ball and sucked Wurmple in. The ball shook from side to side as Wurmple struggled to get out of the Pokeball. This time around, Wurmple did not have enough strength to be able to escape the Pokeball. The ball stopped shaking and a deep, echoing noise was heard, signaling that the capture was a success.

I went over and picked up the Pokeball. Wurmple would prove to be a great ally to Jathan. It was a tough opponent to capture, despite having everything going against it. I put the Pokeball into a sack that I carried. When we got out of the park, if Jathan decided to keep him, the Pokémon would have to be registered as his.

“Congratulations, you caught a Wurmple!” I told Jathan as I walked back over to him. “So, shall we keep moving or do you want to heal your Pokémon or anything?”

OOC: Yeah, that's what I do. I send the rolls to someone then continue.

I grinned happily. My plan had worked. The Magical Leaf attack had lowered the Wurmple's health to a level such that it couldn't resist the ball's capture mechanism.

Ralts chirruped happily, and he ran back into my arms. I picked him and swung him through the air. He giggled happily.

Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw Dee walk over and pick up the Wurmple's ball. I didn't think anything of this, because my older brother was a Ranger and so I knew most of the rules off by heart.

“So, shall we keep moving or do you want to heal your Pokémon or anything?” Dee asked me as he walked back.

I looked at Ralts, who was climbing back into my backpack. He seemed alright, and I didn't really have so much money that I could waste it.

"Nah, I think we should just walk on," I replied. "Ralts is quite alright for now."

And so we continued on, Dee leading the way.

Jathan decided to continue walking. His Ralts was fine enough to continue and so was he. I nodded and started to walk with Jathan and Ralts close behind. There was wood everywhere. You’d think you would become claustrophobic here. The tall, ancient trees didn’t allow much light to pass through. It would be a bit too dark to see anything soon.

“Luxray, light things up a bit for us, will you,” I asked my Luxray. Immediately, she immediately started to glow. It was a lot better and easier to see now. “Good job, girl,” I said, patting Luxray on the head.

While we were walking, I happened to look up into a tree. A small shaggy Pokémon hung down from a branch by one arm. The Pokémon looked like a monkey; however, on closer inspection, I realized that it was actually a Slakoth. It probably had been in this same tree all of its life. They were known for being that lazy, never travelling. I was surprised to see that it wasn’t asleep.

“Look at that,” I pointed Jathan in the direction of the Slakoth. “Do you want to battle that Slakoth up in that tree?”

The massive trees blocked out what little light there was. Soon the sun would have finished setting completely, and I had no faith in the ability of the moon and the stars to light our way sufficiently.

Apparently Dee was thinking along the same lines, because he asked his Luxray to light up the area. It was a lot easier to see, but now everything had a yellow overtone, making the trees look ancient and lifeless.

Soon after, Dee pointed up into a tree. I looked in the direction he was pointing, and I saw a shaggy white creature lying on a branch, yawning.

“Do you want to battle that Slakoth up in that tree?” Dee asked me.

    I thought it over.

"Nah," I replied slowly. "Slakoth and Slaking require a battling style that I'm not particularly good with. Let's just move on."

Jathan decided not to battle the Slakoth, a decision that I agreed with all too well. Slakoth was pretty lazy. As a matter of fact, the Pokémon would slack off every now and then in the middle of a battle. It was not the best choice in a Pokémon battle. We bypassed the Slakoth, who had not slumped over a branch and fallen asleep.

We continued through the woods. Luxray continued to light the way. Luxray was always my first choice when I brought a trainer into the Park. She could see through objects, light up the place, and anything else that needed to be done. All of a sudden, Luxray stopped moving. In response, I stopped moving and motioned for Jathan to do the same.

Some kind of music was playing off in the distance. Was there another trainer or ranger trekking though the woods too? It didn’t seem plausible. I hadn’t seen any signs that there was someone else here. I crept up closer in the direction that the music was coming from, making sure not to make too much noise. On closer inspection, I could tell that it was a Kricketune. Kricketune were known for their ability to make music using their scythe-like legs. I motioned Jathan to regroup to where I was.

“There’s a Kricketune,” I said, pointing at the musical Pokémon. “Do you want one?”

We bypassed the Slakoth, who hadn't even noticed us.

Soon afterwards, I began hearing a strangely haunting tune. I thought it was just me, but I noticed Dee rubbing at his ears too. Just when I was about to say something, Dee motioned for me to be quiet. We crept towards the sound, until the musician was revealed.

Sitting on a rock in the middle of a clearing was a Kricketune. It was rubbing its two legs together, which I realised was the source of the music. It was hard to believe that such a complex piece could be created this way.

“There’s a Kricketune,” Dee said. “Do you want one?”

"I do," I replied, "but I don't think I'll try for it today. It seems happy there, and Ralts would be at a huge type disadvantage anyway."

I tiled my head backwards, indicating that I'd like to try and sneak backwards without disturbing the peaceful Pokemon.

(If you choose to battle it, I'll ease up a bit so that you can continue in the park, since Ralts is your only Pokemon.)

Jathan would have loved having a Kricketune, but unfortunately, Ralts alone would not cut it. He motioned for us to try and sneak away from it. We were almost out of view when Kricketune looked up and saw us. It hopped off of its rock and floated towards us with a buzzing noise. It started to wave its sharp arms around, signaling that it wanted a battle.

“I don’t think it wants us to go,” I said, stating the obvious. “So what do you want to do?”

I reached into my backpack and pulled out another Pokédoll. Rangers carried them to sell to the trainer in case they couldn’t escape from a Pokémon that they didn’t want to battle.

“Do you want to battle it?” I asked. “Or do you want to buy another Pokédoll.” I grinned nervously at the question.

    OOC: Male, please.

We were trying to sneak away when I heard a buzzing sound. I looked back and saw that the Kricketune had dismounted the rock and was flying over. As it did so, it moved its arms rhytmically. The movement reminded me somewhat of a war dance.

“I don’t think it wants us to go,” Dee said. “So what do you want to do?”

He pulled out another PokeDoll and asked me a question, but I wasn't paying attention. I had retreated into my mind, trying to decide what to do. I had a bit of money, but not so much that I could just keep blowing it. Also, Dee probably didn't have an inexhaustible supply of the PokeDolls - if I used one now, I might not be able to run from something else later on.

But then again, this Kricketune would be a tough battle, and I didn't want to leave the Park before capturing three Pokemon.

What do you think, Ralts? I asked silently through the empathic link.

Feelings of approval and excitement flowed through the link. Ralts wanted to take it on and try his abilities.

    I wasn't convinced, but I couldn't deny Ralts anything.

He jumped out of my backpack and stood in front of me, chirruping his defiance.

"I guess I'll have to battle it," I said to Dee over my shoulder. I then turned to look at Ralts.

"Ralts, open with Charm!" I called.

Ralts held his tiny hands to his mouth and blew a kiss at the Kricketune. A pair of pink hearts bobbed lazily towards the red Bug Pokemon.

    vs. Kricketune BP1

After some deliberating, Jathan decided to battle. I nodded and stepped back. Ralts floated from Jathan’s backpack and chirped almost defiantly. He must have been confident in his skills. Ralts was ready to battle the Kricketune to prove himself to his trainer.

Kricketune seemed like a gentle sort. I noticed how his moments were graceful. He seemed to move in a way that he didn’t want to break or harm anything. Ralts may be able to win this battle because Kricketune seemed like the type to hold back so that he wouldn’t cause too much harm.

Jathan ordered his Pokémon to use Charm. Ralts immediately blew a kiss at the Kricketune. Tiny hearts floated to the Kricketune and popped on impact. Kricketune seemed knocked off balance, probably because they were both males. His willingness to attack seemed to lower even more than what his gentle nature caused him to; however, he knew that he was in a battle and that was what he was going to do.

Kricketune charged at Ralts. His hands started to glow white as he ran. He pulled his claw back and thrust in forward in a sweeping motion with the intent to swipe Ralts’s body.

The Kricketune seemed a little off-balance by the Charm, but not as much as I was hoping. It quickly recovered and darted forward, one of its scythe-hands glowing white.

I had to think, and carefully. There was no way I could let Ralts get hit by an attack like that: it was known to often do extra damage, in the form of what the professionals called a "critical hit".

Ralts' evasive moves included Double Team, Teleport, and his telekinetic abilities. This would probably be a long battle, so using Teleport early on wasn't a good choice. Furthermore, I'd like to try and save Double Team for avoiding a powered-up Fury Cutter or something.

That only left the telekinetic abilities, and there was no reason to hide them. They're what Ralts usually used to battle, and they didn't tire him unless he was lifting heavy objects. If my plan worked, he wouldn't be lifting anything heavy at all.

"Ralts, push against the Kricketune with Psychic!" I called. "But don't try to push it back - let the shockwave knock you out of its path! Then, once you're safe, follow up with Confusion!"

Ralts nodded, and he pushed a stubby little hand towards the Kricketune. I could just see the shockwave flying towards the incoming Pokemon. Usually I wouldn't be able to see the shockwave, but Ralts had deliberately slowed it and weakened it so that it would rebound off the Kricketune.

    vs. Kricketune BP2

Ralts pushed his hand forward. His trainer had just ordered him to use Psychic to ward off Kricketune’s attack. The space looked distorted. The energy produced by Kricketune started to counter the energy Ralts was producing with his Psychic attack. As the distance between the two Pokémon decrease, the psychic bubble formed by the energy coming from the two Pokémon started to condense, until finally it exploded. There was a small explosion that knocked both Pokémon a little distance away from each other.

Ralts hopped back on his feet and used Confusion to push Kricketune back more. Kricketune’s head slammed into the rock that was behind him. When he got back up, he was in a daze. The Cricket Pokémon was seeing double. He got back up slowly. The world around him was spinning. He charged towards a tree, with his claws crossed. The poor little Kricketune thought the tree was Ralts.

Ralts had successfully stopped the Slash attack by knocking himself backwards, and he had confused the Kricketune. Unfortunately, he had taken slight damage, but it was nothing compared to the potential damage he would have taken had the Slash attack hit him.

And although the Kricketune was making a fool of itself by attacking a nearby in-offending tree, it still looked quite healthy. I needed to do more damage to it.

Again, I took stock of Ralts' abilities, but this time I considered his offensive capabilities, not his defensive ones.

He had his main form of offense: telekinetic attacks through Psychic and Confusion. He'd already used these to fair effect.

Ralts carried Magical Leaf as well, but that was next to useless in this situation. It was best saved for late-battle, when I wanted smaller amounts of damage done.

Lastly, there was the finisher combo. Dream Eater absorbed magnificent amounts of health from the opponent, damaging it in the process. Unfortunately, it was best utilised late in the battle as opponents rarely fell for it more than once.

I regretfully concluded that the best option currently available was Ralts' telekinesis. And the Kricketune was right underneath a tree.

"Ralts, drop some branches on the Kricketune!" I called.

He nodded, and his outline glowed purple as he reached out for some loose branches...

    vs. Kricketune BP3

"Ralts, drop some branches on the Kricketune!" Jathan ordered. The plan was for Ralts to use his telekinetic abilities to pull some branches down on the Kricketune, who was ignorantly slashing away at the tree.

Ralts reached for the tree, and started to glow purple. Some of the branches from the tree glowed as well. They moved sporadically as Ralts attempted to pull them down from the tree. Finally, a few of them came loose and plopped down on Kricketune’s head. He was still a bit confused. Ralts’s attack had done nothing to snap him out of it, though I knew that that was a more favorable outcome.

Kricketune, now even more convinced that the tree was Ralts, continued to slash at the tree. His hands glowed white as he swiped away, leaving scars and marks on the tree where his claws had stripped it of its bark.

I couldn’t help but laugh to myself at the scene. Kricketune looked foolish and even though I knew that this was not of his own doing, I had to laugh. A little while later, I felt kind of bad for laughing at it. I could only imagine what the tree was thinking (if trees could do such a thing) while Kricketune continued hacking away at its bark.

So far, the battle was going well. Kricketune was staying away from Ralts and slowly accumulating damage. And yet, it could go bad at any moment. When the Kricketune came to its senses, it would charge at Ralts, and I was ready for that. Ralts hadn't used either Teleport or Double Team yet.

No, the problem wasn't that Ralts couldn't defend, it was that he couldn't attack. These low-level Confusion and telekinetic attacks weren't doing enough damage. That left only two options.

Ralts could rest for a little bit, regaining his stamina. I considered this possibility, but soon discarded it. Ralts was not fatigued just yet, and besides the other option was rarely used anyway.

Ralts had the ability to use Psychic to launch shockwaves, just like he had before. The longer he spent charging the shockwave, the stronger it would be. Ralts almost never used super-charged shockwaves because they took a long time to charge. But considering the Kricketune was distracted, perhaps this was our chance.

"Ralts, start charging a shockwave!" I called. "As powerful as you can!"

Ralts cupped his hands together, and between them winds started swirling, trying to separate his hands. As the potential energy built, the hands would be separated. The further his arms were stretched, the more powerful the shockwave.

I'd need a big one to take down this Bug Pokemon.
