OOC: Sorry for the wait... A Link Between Worlds is too addicting. x.x

Despite being a ranger for more than a year now, Arctas still had not set foot into the Ruined Manor area of the National Park. Most of the trainers he was assigned to take into the park were adamant about going to places full of more, well.. corporeal Pokemon. Even without having set foot into the area himself, he felt that his knowledge gave him more than enough to successfully lead a trainer through there. The higher ups sure as hell believed in his ability, so why not? And this trainer seemed to be a veteran of the park as it is, so they have probably been through here numerous times himself.

"Jerome... And seems that he enjoys coming to the park." He said out loud, not realizing he has yet to release his partner Pokemon from his ball. Before he could be caught talking to himself again, he dropped a shiny Pokeball onto the ground next to him. The ball split in half, releasing a white light that slowly formed his trusty partner Lucario.

<Mm, so we're dealing with ghosts today, are we?> His partner telepathically said, after looking up at the large, abandoned building. <I don't really like ghosts, you know.>

"Yeah, well... You'll have to deal, since we'll need your help throughout this area." He said to his Pokemon, trying to convince him and avoid having to drag the jackal-like Pokemon through the front doors by his feet, which had happened once before in a similar circumstance.

<You owe me a berry juice for this> The Lucario said, grinning. Ever since Arctas had brought him to Lumiose City on vacation, the Pokemon was addicted to the juices one of the shops offered. Luckily, the craze started to catch on in Unova, so there wasn't any oceanic voyages in order to obtain these drinks.

"Alright, now lets see if this trainer shows up before dark, alright?" He didn't even know if it was still daytime, though. The thick forest of spooky bare trees made sunlight almost impossible to see, and every hour looks like midnight. Perfect for all the ghost-type Pokemon roaming about, he guessed. He decided to sit on a bench just outside of the manor, waiting for his trainer to come up the cobblestone path.

It had been a long while since I had been to the park as a Trainer. The park was having some problems with Rangers taking people. Things appeared to be situated now and I was finally getting to go into the park after some time. Better late than never I suppose. I had decided to go into a place called Ruined Manor, a place made specifically for Ghost and Dark types. I was hoping to come across a Noibat, Honedge, or maybe Drifloon. I wasn't really looking for a lot of Pokémon to be honest. I looked at my watch and saw that I was going to be a little late. I had Mindbender, my Gardevoir, teleport Shadow and me outside of Ruined Manor.

She teleported us on a cobblestone pathway that led up to our destination. As we walked up the pathway, I noticed my Ranger sitting on a bench waiting for us. I walked up towards him and introduced myself.

"Hey! I'm Jerome!" I said to him then looked down to Shadow. "This is Shadow, my Houndoom, and Mindbender my Gardevoir. We are ready to go when you are! Can't wait to see what we come across!"

He nodded at the introduction Jerome gave, patting the Houndoom gently, since it was close by from sniffing at his leg. The Pokemon wagged his tail at the friendliness, and went back over to his trainer.

"Alright, lets get in there and find some ghosts!" He said to the trainer, motioning him to follow. Arctas didn't know exactly what the inside of the mansion looked like, but he wanted to find out. Pushing open the door, the ranger was surprised to see that the mansion was cleaner than he thought it would be. He assumed it would be run down, with floors caved in and walls with holes scattered along them. Instead, it looked like a home that went without a cleaning for a year or so. Furniture was neatly arranged, pictures on the walls and tabletops, lamps with some cobwebs strewn across them. It was actually quite interesting just how good the inside of the mansion looked. Shaking off his amazement, he turned back to his trainer.

"Now, which wing do you want to explore first?" He asked, since the first room they entered was to the center of the mansion, with grand staircase and all. To their left and right were two doors, followed by two doors in the center, on either side of the main staircase. No matter which way they go, they were bound to run into ghost-types, but there might be hidden secrets in some parts of the house and not others.

    @Taither;

"Alright, lets get in there and find some ghosts!" he said. Once we were inside, I saw that my Ranger looked sort of surprised. My guess was that this was his first time here, which was unfortunate for us because I was hoping he would know where he was leading us. I guess we would just have to play it by ear and see how it turns out.

"Now, which wing do you want to explore first?" He asked me. I just shrugged. I saw all the doors and different possibilities, but in the end the doors in the middle is what stuck out to me. I felt that would be the best place to go first. We could always head back here if nothing interesting came out way. We could also maybe find a secret passage way going this way, anything was possible at this point.

I wasn't quite sure now what I was hoping to find. There wasn't really much Pokemon I needed from here anymore, but I was going to try and capture anything of value that wasn't evolved. I liked training my Pokemon from basic stages unless they didn't evolve. Rarely did I ever go for anything that was already evolved. My Gardevoir was the exception to that rule.

OOC: Taking some creative license with the manor's interior here, changing it a bit from what Tai had :p.

    IC:
Another day and another Trainer who wanted to visit the old Manor that had recently been found. Well, he was already out there and his trip had started, but his current Ranger had needed to leave to tend to personal matters outside the Park. I was finishing up some paperwork that was necessary when taking a run from another Ranger, and once it was complete I dropped it in an Outbox bin on my desk. I then grabbed the file on the Trainer, who was one of the older Rangers, and looked over his information.

“Jerome is bringing his Houndoom and his Gardevoir, and of course his ridiculous amount of Items...” I shook my head at the list. “Who needs that many Voice Disks?” I chuckled a bit, then went over the rest of the information. I was surprised that the Ranger was bringing along a Pokemon who was weak to a majority of the Pokemon inhabiting the long-abandoned Manor. She had a fair number of moves, granted, but Gardevoir weren't exactly built for taking a lot of hits.

“I'm sure he knows what he's doing,” I said after a moment, gathering up a few things of my own before heading out of my office. I was at the Manor's Outpost thankfully, so it wouldn't take long to reach the two. Even so, it was after nightfall and chilly, so I shrugged on a black overcoat and double-checked to make sure I had everything that might be needed. Several various items in a pack around my waist, a flashlight, a map of the Manor, and other possible necessities. Once I was pleased I had everything, I left the Outpost and set off towards the Manor.

My breath fogged in the cold evening air, which was crisp and fresh, and I was thankful for the coat I was wearing. It was also quiet, save for the occasional call of a Pokemon in the distance. It wasn't long before I entered the woods, their thick branches closing in over my head and blocking out the light from the moon. I took out my flashlight to make sure I didn't trip over any stray roots or anything, and also to make sure I didn't run into any Pokemon who might be on the path.

My boots crunched over dead leaves and twigs as I followed the path, swinging my flashlight back and forth. As I walked, I started to get the sensation that I was being watched. I frowned a little and drew to a halt, knowing better than to ignore my gut. It was never a good idea to just put aside such feelings, not in a place like this. I looked around, shining my flashlight into the shadows all around, but didn't see anything. All the same, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was something there, just outside the reach of the flashlight's illumination.

I reached into a pocket and drew out a PokeBall, releasing the Pokemon within. There was a brief flash of white light that soon faded to reveal a Trevenant. The ghostly tree made a low-pitched noise of curiosity, which then rose into a loud sort of groan. It was a warning noise, meant to chase something unwanted off. I patted the rough chocolate bark that covered most of the Pokemon's body, not sure if I should be worried that I was right or glad I wasn't imagining things. Figment focused his single pale red eye on me and made a motion, indicating we should get moving. I nodded and started off for the Manor again, feeling better with Figment at my back. Every so often he made a menacing sound; clearly whatever was out there was still tailing us.

Thankfully, we made it to the old building without being accosted, and I headed inside without hesitating. I paused long enough to check the floor for holes or rotted portions; the Manor was in a serious state of disrepair after being left to the elements for years. I entered a sort of lobby and headed through the main doors, going slower now so I wouldn't fall through any weak spots on the floor. My flashlight picked out pieces of old furniture, covered in dust and falling apart. There were pots here and there, bearing the dry withered remains of plants. Before me a grand staircase rose to the second floor, and fraying, moth-bitten rugs were placed in choice locations.

The atmosphere of the Manor wasn't exactly inviting, but at least it was warmer in here than outside. One of the first orders of business had been to get functioning, if basic, heat going in the Manor. It wasn't electrically-generated, but was instead done thanks to solar panels that had been put in the building's roof (once it had been fixed enough, that is). The system didn't heat the mansion up too much, just enough that it was comfortable during winter to walk around without being bundled up. I took off my overcoat and draped it over a nearby table; everything I needed was in my pants pockets or my waist pack.

It didn't take long to track down Jerome and Arctas, since I'd already gotten their location when the request for me to take over had come in. I arrived in time to see Arctas on a phone, and he nodded when he spotted me before heading off. I caught his arm as he walked by.

“I think there might be something outside. It followed me here,” I told him, wanting to give make sure he was aware of the possible danger. He nodded again and I let him go, watching as he left. I then turned my attention to Jerome, offering a faint smile as Figment moved closer to my back. He was on edge now, clearly upset about whatever had followed us and now sensing others of his kind filling this place.

“Sorry about the Ranger change,” I told my new Trainer. “Some things came up with Jerome and he had to go. Not sure on the details, but I guess it doesn't matter.” I was getting ready to ask if the other Ranger knew where he wanted to go, but I was cut off by Figment making a harsh sort of creaking-growling noise. I frowned and turned to face him, seeing that he was staring into the shadows off to the left. I swung my flashlight in that direction, but nothing was there. I shivered a little and gently patted Figment's side again. Despite nothing visible being there, Figment continued to growl threateningly. I looked over at Jerome as I moved back a pace, ready to tell Figment to attack if the need arose.

“Feel like hanging around to see if whatever's got Figment riled up makes itself known, or would you rather move on?”

We hadn't even started my run yet and I was already getting a ranger change. Not that it was a bad thing, I understood that things did come up. I was glad though that this happened now and not later on during my run. My new ranger was a female with a Trenevant as her partner.

“Sorry about the Ranger change,” She told me. “Some things came up with Jerome and he had to go. Not sure on the details, but I guess it doesn't matter.” My guess was that her and my previous ranger weren't well acquainted since she just called him my name. Either that or it was a slip of the tongue. Didn't really matter to me either way. “Feel like hanging around to see if whatever's got Figment riled up makes itself known, or would you rather move on?”

"Hmm," I thought to myself, "must be pretty scary to rile up a Ghost type. Might be worth checking out I suppose. I just hope it isn't anything fully evolved or else I won't want it."

"Sure, I suppose if it's riled up your Ghost type, it might be worth checking out." I said to my Ranger. I waited for whatever it was to reveal itself. I was really hoping it would be something good and that I'd finally be able to get this run going!

Jerome decided to hang around and see if whatever was upsetting Figment decided to reveal itself. We waited a few moments, but nothing appeared. At first I thought it was something in another room Figment was sensing, but then I noticed movement just inside the flashlight's radius. Not wanting to blind whatever it was, I moved the light a bit to the left. Just enough to shed a bit more light on what was there so I could see it clearly. It turned out to be an orange pumpkin with two stubby legs and eye-like holes that were glowing with a faint yellow light. On the top, however, in place of a stem there was a shadowy black shape. It looked like a shaggy black mass, with curled ears and a twisted stem. Two small orange eyes were currently watching us with something that could only be considered indifference. I frowned a bit, not liking the way the Pokemon was just sitting there staring like it was.

“A Pumpkaboo,” I commented after a moment, moving out of the way so Jerome could see it. “It's a Kalos Pokemon, dual-typed Ghost and Grass.” The pumpkin didn't move as I kept it in the light, and behind me Figment was still growling. This couldn't be what had him so upset, could it? Sure, it was kind of creepy how it was just looking at us without doing anything or reacting in the slightest, but there could be numerous reasons for that. Perhaps it was scared, sick, or just tired. Or maybe it simply didn't think we were worth the effort to care about. It was a Ghost, after all, capable of phasing through solid objects at will and turning invisible as it pleased.

“Is that what's upsetting you?” I asked Figment, who shook his head and pointed a clawed hand towards a spot a few feet away from where Pumpkaboo was. Whatever it was must not be in the immediate vicinity, but close enough that it's presence was bothering my Pokemon. Odd, though, that Figment was so bothered, but Pumpkaboo seemed completely unawares. Or maybe it just couldn't be asked to care enough about something not actively attacking it.

Then a thought struck me; whatever had been following me on the way here might not have stayed outside. If that was the case, if was most likely some kind of Ghost. Otherwise I would have heard the doors opening behind me as I came in. For now, though, it seemed there was nothing that could be done. I would simply have to remain more alert than usual and pay close attention to Figment's body language. Right now he was just bristling, making it clear he would attack if provoked further. If he started acting more aggressive, that would be the time to worry. At the moment there was the matter of a possible battle to see to, though.

“Well, it seems this little Pumpkaboo isn't what has Figment so uneasy, but since it's here, do you fancy trying to catch it?”

We waited a few moments, but I didn't see anything special happening. I wasn't really expecting anything to happen either. Whatever it was that was bothering the Trenevant wouldn't show itself yet. It seemed to want to remain in the shadows for now. I couldn't help but to wonder what it was though. What type of Pokemon could do this to a Ghost type. Something really scary or creepy was my guess.

I was getting ready to call it and move on, but then I noticed my Ranger notice something. She moved the light a bit to the left. Then I saw it. It was a bipedal Pokémon that resembled a pinkish pumpkin used on Halloween. The pumpkin's body had a pair of circular holes carved out of its rind that resemble eyes. It had a ghostly squid body that resided in the Halloween pumpkin. The way its hallow eye sockets kept staring at us was creepy indeed, but I wasn't sure this was the Pokemon.

“A Pumpkaboo,” My ranger commented after a moment. “It's a Kalos Pokemon, dual-typed Ghost and Grass.” I was quite intrigued, I hadn't seen a Pokemon like it before. I wondered if my upgraded Pokedex would have anything on this Pokemon. I quickly whipped out my reddish black electronic device and did a scan.

Pumpkaboo - the Pumpkin Pokemon. This particular Pokemon is a combination of Ghost and Grass types. They come in four different sizes, small size, average size, large size, and super size. The pumpkin body is inhabited by a spirit trapped in this world. As the sun sets, it becomes restless and active. It is said to carry wandering spirits to the place where they belong so they can move on.

"Interesting enough." I said to myself, I had come across over seventy five percent of the known Pokemon in our world, or at least I thought I had. Recently, it had come to my attention that there were new species emerging and I just had to get my hands on them. This Pumpkaboo was one of them so I would have to capture it.

“Is that what's upsetting you?” She asked her partner Pokemon. He shook his head and pointed at a spot a few feet away from the Halloween pumpkin. “Well, it seems this little Pumpkaboo isn't what has Figment so uneasy, but since it's here, do you fancy trying to catch it?”

"I believe I would like to capture this Pokemon." I said to my Ranger. At first look, the obvious choice would be to use Shadow here because he was both Fire and Dark types, both of which were super effective against this Ghost and Grass type. However, Mindbender wasn't a bad choice either. Sure, she didn't have the advantage, but she could sure use a wide assortment of moves. She could easily but it to sleep or burn it where it stands. Just about the only thing she couldn't do was freeze it, but we haven't had a problem with that before.

I was seriously tempted to use her, but then I figured, whatever lies in wait wouldn't be doing so for long. If I wanted to capture this Pokemon, I would have to do so fast before it decided to make its move. Who knows what it had planned. I knew it couldn't be good, so I was going to have Mindbender spot for me and let me know of anything suspicious she saw. Sure, my Ranger had her Pokemon on it, but I just wanted to be careful.

"You're up Shadow." I said, "Let's try to get this over with as quickly as possible. We have something lurking nearby and we don't know when it will strike if at all." Shadow nodded swiftly and moved forward towards Pumpkaboo.

"Mindbender, keep an eye out." I said to her telepathically. "Shadow here has to be able to battle without also watching his back. I know he knows that we have that covered, so just protect him if you see anything since he will be focused on the battle." She nodded in agreement and kept watch.

"Shadow, begin this with Flame Charge. After you gain momentum, launch a Toxic attack in the Pumpkins direction. We have your back over here buddy."

Shadow slammed his two front paws down, bringing up a cloud of dust that covered his body. He would then surround himself in flames and charge tackle the Pumpkaboo. Doing so will make him faster. Once he did that, he would spit out a toxic gunk at the Ghost type and hopefully either successfully land the hit or it inhales the vapors and becomes poisoned. That was my plan for now, have it deal damage every now and then to make this go by a little bit faster.

Shadow was one of the best and strongest Pokemon I had. Since I had been training with him basically my whole like, we were quite unbeatable in the outside world. Of course we've been beaten several times, but our bond and communication were quite on key. We were basically one in battle.

If that didn't work and Pumpkaboo wasn't poisoned, I had another plan to hopefully make this work. Wasn't sure if I would need this plan, but it was always good to have a back up, and usually a back up of the back up, but one thing at a time for now.

I looked over towards my Ranger. "Let me know if you see whatever is making you guys uneasy. Hopefully I can capture this before it shows itself." I knew she would also be watching my back, but I knew Shadow would concentrate better not having to worry about us and battling at the same time. Besides, he knew I could take care of myself.

OOC: Size and gender? Also, I subscribe to all Park threads, so you don't have to bother mentioning me each time :D. Also, fsr the animated Pumpkaboo model was stretching the post, thus the static image.

IC: “I believe I would like to capture this Pokemon,” Jerome said after contemplating it for a moment. He spent a few more seconds, most likely debating which of his Pokemon to use, before finally settling on using his Houndoom. Despite knowing the Trainer was also a seasoned Ranger, I couldn't help but hope he'd be careful with any Fire attacks. The wood in the Manor was dry as kindling and would most likely go up in flames quickly if any stray fire were to hit a wall or the floor. I moved back to give the Pokemon some distance, as did Figment; Fire Pokemon weren't his favorite, after all.

Jerome commanded his Pokemon to lead with a Flame Charge, then try a Toxic. I pursed my lips a little; I just didn't like the idea of open fire being flung around in such a flammable environment. Still, as long as Shadow retained control of his moves, there should be little chance of the Manor burning down around us.

Shadow slammed his paws into the floor, causing the boards to groan in protest as he shoved off into a dash. Fire started to spark from his fur until crackling tendrils of orange-red were swirling around his body. Pumpkaboo didn't look overly concerned, and for a moment I worried there was something wrong with it. However, just before Shadow reached it, the little pumpkin's form wavered and then vanished. Shadow slid to a halt as the fire around his body flickered and faded, nearly tripping over his own paws, and sniffed the air in an effort to locate his opponent. He didn't have to search long, because a moment later the Pokemon reappeared behind him. It was coming out of his shadow, since the Houndoom was now in the path of my flashlight, and it wasted no time in flinging its small body at the canine's back.

Shadow yelped when the attack struck, whirling with an expression of ire. The attack didn't cause very much damage, but it had probably been an unpleasant shock. He then inhaled before spewing a thick cloud of dark gray fumes right in Pumpkaboo's face. The pumpkin cried out as the Toxic miasma engulfed it, unable to phase away fast enough to avoid it. It coughed a few times, then floated about three feet from Shadow before making an angry noise. The light from the holes on its lower body took on a sinister purple-red shine, which exploded in a burst of dark light the next moment.

Shadow yipped as the light was released, shaking his head once it faded and blinking rapidly. He then looked around, a bemused expression on his face. It was almost like he couldn't remember what was going on.

“This Pumpkaboo is a crafty little bugger,” I stated. “It used a Shadow Sneak to dodge Shadow's super-effective attack, and now it's used a Confuse Ray on him.” As I spoke, Pumpkaboo winced and floated to the ground, looking like it was in pain for a moment. It recovered soon enough, giving Shadow a baleful look. “You're going to have to play it careful with this one. Between Shadow being confused and Pumpkaboo being under the influence of Toxic, one wrong move might knock it out.” Toxic dealt more and more damage as time went on, the poisons wrecking more chaos on the victim's body. It was an odd choice of move to use, since in just a few minutes it would be sapping a fair portion of Pumpkaboo's health. Jerome would have to pull his punches to avoid knocking the Pokemon out, and he'd have to be careful with Shadow. In his confused state, he might not only injure himself, he could set fire to the Manor or attack with more strength than intended.

As I kept one eye on the battle, I started making a tally of the things around us that could prove to be a problem. We were in a wide, oval-shaped hallway at the moment. About five feet from where Pumpkaboo had been sitting was a dead-end into a wall. The hall split off to the left and right from there; in front of the wall was a small table with a few faded pictures. There was a large circular rug beneath us that might have been a vivid blue at one point, but was now a sort of grungy gray color. Maybe ten feet from Jerome was a cluster of wooden armchairs and a large hardwood table.

“Mind the rug,” I called, that being the biggest possibility of injury or other issues. “There could be holes or weak spots under it we can't see, and Shadow could trip on it if he's not careful.”

OOC: Didn't know it was made of wood, you know, since there is no description of the place like the others.

“This Pumpkaboo is a crafty little bugger,” She stated, I was only half listening at this point. I was too concentrated on my battle to be distracted now. “It used a Shadow Sneak... blah blah blah, and now it's used a Confuse Ray... blah blah blah. You're going to have to play it careful with this one. Between Shadow being confused... blah blah blah... the influence of blah, one wrong blah blah blah.”

“Mind the rug,” She called, grabbing more of my attention than I meant to give. “There could be holes or weak spots under it we can't see, and Shadow could trip on it if he's not careful.”

I looked over towards the rug and sighed. Nothing was easy, but we'd definitely take that into advisement. I wasn't quite sure what other 'traps' were in store for us, but we'd be ready for them.

First things first, I had to focus on Shadow being confused. He was going to need to concentrate hard so that this confusion wouldn't come back to bite us in the ass. I knew I didn't have much of a problem, but being confused was always tricky, especially if you're not focused.

"Shadow, listen to me buddy. I am going to need you to focus hard on making this next attack hit directly with just enough power. We don't want to knock it out so tone it down a notch, but do enough damage. Once you've concentrated and you know you'll hit, use Dark Pulse. I hope that will do sufficient damage.

Dark Pulse was just that, a pulse of dark, black energy from with in. It would be super effective against Pumpkaboo so this was a good thing. It was a pretty strong, reliable move so I hoped it would do me good here.

OOC: Still need size and gender XD. Also I would say the manor itself is made out of masonry, you know, bricks and such, but the floor and walls are wood.

IC: Jerome seemed to be paying half-attention to my explanation as I explained what had happened during the turn, and that was understandable. Some Trainers preferred focusing on battles, but it never hurt to give a heads-up of what was going down just so they were aware of the situation. At least I saw him pay more attention when I mentioned erring on the side of caution when it came to the rug. He glanced at it and sighed, and I couldn't blame him for being annoyed. It was bad enough to have it to worry about when you didn't have a confused Pokemon to deal with as well.

"Shadow, listen to me buddy,” he called after a few moments. “I am going to need you to focus hard on making this next attack hit directly with just enough power. We don't want to knock it out so tone it down a notch, but do enough damage. Once you've concentrated and you know you'll hit, use Dark Pulse. I hope that will do sufficient damage.” Shadow faced his Trainer and though it was clear he was still reeling from the Confuse Ray, he nodded to show he understood well enough what was being asked of him.

Pumpkaboo wasn't about to just sit around and let Shadow have an easier time of things, though. The Pokemon's fanged mouth curled into a smirk as it watched Shadow narrow his eyes and take a wide-legged stance, his expression something between intense concentration and floundering confusion. After taking a second to appreciate its handiwork, the poisoned Ghost sprung into action. Its cheeks puffed out as it levitated above Shadow, spitting out a barrage of small, sharp black seeds once it was in position. These struck Shadow's back and the top of his head; a few even managed to hit him in the face as Pumkpaboo floated around a bit.

Jerome's Pokemon flinched away from the Bullet Seed as the attack hit his face. The seeds wouldn't do much damage, but they would sting wherever they hit. I felt a little sorry for Shadow, since I definitely wouldn't want to take an attack like that right in the face. But maybe it was actually for the best; the pain seemed to give Shadow something to focus on. He fixed Pumkpaboo with a hard stare as a wave of dark indigo energy rose from his body. It then flattened itself into a sort of disc before bursting outward away from its creator. Pumpkaboo gave a little yell of surprise, hastily floating backwards in an effort to dodge the wide-spread attack. It couldn't move quite fast enough, though, and the Dark Pulse washed over it. The distance between Shadow and his target had caused the energy to partially dissipate by the time it hit, however, so it didn't do as much damage as it would have if Shadow had managed to hit the Ghost point-blank.

Pumpkaboo made a sound that sounded obscene, obviously unhappy with how things were turning out. It then grimaced as the Toxic spreading through its body did more damage. I watched closely, hoping Jerome would go for a capture soon. If the battle went on too much longer, the Toxic would run unchecked and alone be enough to knock the pumpkin out. If that happened, it would need to be transported to the Ranger Outpost to be taken care of.

OOC: Male, not sure on size yet. Do I have to choose now or can it be anytime before this run ends? Also using a Superball.

Shadow did his job perfectly! I was rather impressed with how this went considering he was confused. So many things could have went wrong, but they didn't. Pumpkaboo attacking Shadow, although I didn't like to see, appeared to help him focus better. That made things a little more easier. However, Pumpkaboo didn't take nearly as much damage as I was hoping it would. I was going to have to use a different move, a move that I should have lead with earlier.

"Shadow, use Sludge Bomb!" I called out to him, "Time to wrap this up!" With that I pulled out a Superball. This particular Pokeball was middle class in comparison to the three main used Pokeballs here in the park. I readied it in my hand and prepared to throw it once Shadow landed his attack.

Sludge Bomb was an easy move to use. Shadow would basically fire a ball of brownish sludge at Pumpkaboo. The after effects were it being poisoned, but since it was already poisoned I didn't have to rely on that. This would hopefully put Pumpkaboo right where I wanted it in terms of health. Once that attack hit I would launch my Superball at it.

Jerome seemed pleased with Shadow's successful use of Dark Pulse, next commanding his Pokemon to make use of a Sludge Bomb. Shadow's face creased in concentration as he tried to keep up with his Trainer's words, his confused state making it harder for him to focus when things weren't said slower. At the same time I saw the Ranger grasping something in one hand, though thanks to where he was standing, the light didn't reach well enough to show what it was. Whatever it was, he seemed to be focusing entirely on the battle before him. I glanced back and forth, keeping an eye out for anything that might try to sneak up on us. Then again, Figment was on such high alert that nothing would manage to get that close without him pouncing at it.

Shadow shook his head vigorously after Jerome finished giving his orders, snorting and fixing Pumpkaboo with a hard look. The pumpkin was momentarily distracted thanks to the Toxic running through its body, so there was a temporary downtime during the battle. It didn't last long; Pumpkaboo noticed Shadow's staring and narrowed its eyes as it rose into the air, swaying from side to side in an effort to seem imposing. Shadow didn't look fazed, only more confused than before by the Pokemon's behavior. His ears went back as a growl crept from his throat, and his tail started to whip back and forth. Instead of being intimidated, he was clearly becoming aggravated by Pumpkaboo's unusual display.

“I hope Pumpkaboo realizes what he's doing,” I said, mostly to myself. Unfortunately, the Ghost didn't seem aware that it was making Shadow angry, seeming to think the fiery dog was instead being frightened. He started to let out a high-pitched wailing noise, making me cringe a little. Shadow responded with a loud bark before opening his jaws wide and heaving a thick wad of yellow-purple ooze. It was a special stomach acid, condensed and concentrated into an almost gel-like state. It wasn't meant to burn, but was rather packed with a chemical cocktail that had the chance of leaving any unlucky target with a nasty case of poisoning.

There was just one problem with this. Shadow was relatively close to the wall, and when he spat up his Sludge Bomb, he jerked his head to send it in a sort of curved arc rather than just a regular ball. This meant that when his head whipped to the right, it smacked hard into the wall next to him. Shadow yelped in pain and surprise, stumbling and shaking his head again. His attack flew forward, a good portion of it splattering on the wall and floor. Some of it managed to strike Pumpkaboo though, causing the Ghost to whimper in pain. While Sludge Bomb didn't really burn its target, it was still stomach acid, and Pumpkaboo's partial Grass-typing made him weak to poisonous attacks to begin with.

The little Ghost wasn't done yet, though. He was obviously spiteful, wanting to enact some kind of revenge on Shadow for causing him more pain. He floated a bit closer to the stricken Pokemon and started to mutter under his breath; as he did so, a rope of dark purple energy peeled from his body and started to reach for Shadow. It was dripping and looked particularly malevolent. Pumpkaboo's face twisted into a cruel smile of glee, anticipating the attack to strike. But at that moment, the Toxic in its veins struck, causing it to give a tiny shriek. It fell to the ground, the tendril of energy slapping against Shadow's snout before fizzling out. Shadow yelped again and jumped back, looking startled and a bit more exhausted than before.

“That must have been a Pain Split,” I said. “Pumpkaboo was going to steal some of Shadow's health to heal itself, but the Toxic interrupted it. Good thing, too, or else Shadow would probably be worse off than Pumpkaboo now.”

Jerome took the chance to lob what was in his hand, and as it entered the radius of my flashlight, it was revealed to be a Super Ball. It soared through the air and hit Pumpkaboo in the back, sucking him in as he was reduced to a cloud of red energy. The Ball then fell to the ground where it feebly wobbled several times. It then came to a rest, signaling the Pokemon inside had been successfully captured. I went to retrieve it and stowed it in a spare pocket in my hip pack. I then turned to Jerome, shooting Shadow a look as the Pokemon sat down, pawing at his stinging nose from where Pumpkaboo's Pain Split had struck.

“Well, that was a tricky first battle. Why don't we take a moment before moving on?”

“Well, that was a tricky first battle. Why don't we take a moment before moving on?” She said, retrieving my newly caught Pokemon. I was quite excited.I didn't want to take a moment to rest though because of what was out there, but I had to let Shadow rest up a little before we moved on. Perhaps I could speed up the process a bit.

"Mindbender, use Heal Pulse on Shadow! I need him back to help as fast as possible. Whatever was skulking around earlier still has to be around, and we don't want to let it catch us here unprepared." I said. Mindbender moved towards Shadow and began the healing process.

"Arunei, do you think we should move on now or wait to see what was causing your Trenevant to get spooked. I don't care which we do either way, but if you think it's going to follow us we might as well confront it now."

Mindbender started to heal up her ally upon Jerome's request, asking her to employ a Heal Pulse on the Houndoom. She went over to him and knelt down, holding her hands out as a soft pink-white light started to glow around them. The Ranger then faced me and asked what we should do about whatever was upsetting Figment.

“I'm not sure we can force it out,” I replied. “I don't know what it is, but it's strong if it has Figment so anxious. And that means we might not want to make it reveal itself. If we try to force it into battle, that might make it more aggressive. The best we can do is stay alert in case it decides to come forward. If not, then it's a battle we don't have to worry about. At any rate, Fig here is so keyed up nothing will be able to get close enough for a sneak attack.” A quick glance back at Figment saw him pacing back and forth. He was on the very outskirts of the flashlight's reach, but his single eye was emitting a faint light that was easy to track in the total darkness surrounding us.

By now Mindbender had restored a good deal of Shadow's health. Being able to rest and get healed did him good, for he now looked like he was no longer confused. Mindbender stood and both Pokemon motioned that they were ready to continue. Figment joined us as we headed onwards, hanging back several paces to cover us from behind.

I led us down the hall leading to the right from the dead-end. There were doors on either side of this hall, though most were broken to some extent or hanging off their hinges. A few were missing altogether, and one or two were still in good condition. I shone my light in the rooms that were open, but there was nothing in any of them except some dilapidated furniture. We eventually came to another dead-end, save a staircase that spiraled downward. I frowned and pulled out my map, taking a second to look over it to get my bearings. I then located the stairs and found they led into an old cellar.

“Okay, this set of stairs goes to a cellar. We can either head down there and have a look around, or we can check some of these other rooms that are closed.” I was about to mention we could check the open rooms too if he really wanted to, but I noticed something moving off to the side. I shifted the flashlight a bit and found a small green spider that seemed to be hovering with its face pointing the floor. After a second I realized it was just hanging from a thread of silk, though. It didn't move at first, but once it realized it was directly in the light it started to click its little fangs together, waving six tiny red legs at us. A small horn on its head glinted in the light, and black markings that resembled a face stood out in sharp contrast to its green body.

“A Spinarak,” I said, smiling a bit. It was rather adorable, even when trying to be intimidating. “They're small, but they can give a nasty bite. Interested?”

"No, not interested in capturing a Spinarak." I said. I was quite annoyed at having Pokemon like this hang around, especially when I didn't have any interest in capturing one. I was just hoping it would go away, but I knew I wouldn't be that lucky. I prepared myself to use a Pokedoll in case this Pokemon wouldn't leave us alone. I hoped to run into something interesting soon, I was itching for another good battle. I wouldn't mind something I already captured before if it was good enough. I just wasn't sure I'd run into something like that yet.

IC: I can't say I was surprised when Jerome decided to pass up on the Spinarak. I personally owned an Ariados and she was actually quite the capable battler, but she relied heavily on tricky tactics as opposed to outright physical power. It wasn't something everyone liked, and that was understandable.

Unfortunately, Spinarak seemed to take offense at Jerome's words, clicking its mandibles angrily. It started to swing back and forth, emitting a shrill chittering noise as it did. Thankfully, Jerome was ready to deal with the spider and lobbed a PokeDoll he'd been reaching for. It bounced off into the darkness, causing Spinarak to ascend its thread and scuttle along the ceiling. It then went down the wall towards where the Doll had gone, clearly intent on finding it. I nodded and motioned for my fellow Ranger to make a choice as to where we'd go next.

"Well, do you wanna head downstairs to the cellar, or check some of these rooms?" As I waited for an answer, I quickly studied the map again. The cellar, from what I could tell, was supposed to run the entire length of the mansion. I frowned a little, wondering why it would need to be so large. Was it possible the original owner intended to use it for something less than wholesome? For a moment I envisioned finding the skeletal remains of a serial killer, maybe just piled on the floor, maybe entombed in the walls or floor. I then shook my head and forced the unpleasant thoughts away, folding the map and putting it back in my hip pack.

"Well, do you wanna head downstairs to the cellar, or check some of these rooms?" I thought about it for a second. Staying up here didn't appear to be too promising. I was not really sure, but I had a feeling nothing of interest would be waiting for me in these rooms. Didn't hurt to check, but it also didn't hurt to check the cellar. In movies, a lot of scary ghosts stayed down in the cellar, perhaps this would be the case here. I could only hope for something interesting to come my way.

"The cellar sounds pretty good! Let's go!" I said.

Jerome opted to head downstairs, which wasn't very surprising. I nodded and took the lead once more, heading down the stairs. They were made out of some kind of dark wood, almost black in color. I cautiously stepped down, testing the wood to make sure it would hold my weight. When nothing broke and sent me plummeting to the depths below, I slowly went down a few more paces. The stairs creaked and groaned in protest, but nothing broke.

“Stairs seem sturdy enough, but all the same you might want to go slow and recall your Pokemon, just to be safe,” I told the Ranger behind me. After giving him a few moments to do so, we continued down the stairs into the cellar. It didn't take long to reach the ground, which was made either from concrete or stone, it was impossible to tell. I shone my light around, but there were no Pokemon present in the immediate area. In fact, there was nothing here period. We'd come into a large, empty circular room. In front of us was a wooden door that was firmly closed, probably leading into the cellar proper.

“Chilly down here,” I remarked, noting the clear drop in temperature. The basic heating system hadn't been set up to bring warmth down here, it seemed, and it was definitely colder here than it was upstairs. I briefly wished I'd brought my coat after all, then shrugged and headed for the door in front of us. It was locked with a padlock, but thankfully a key was stuck in it. It took a bit of careful jiggling as not to break the key, but I was able to unlock it after a few seconds. It then took a fair amount of tugging to drag the door open, causing the rusted hinges to let out a painfully loud squeal as the metal pieces ground against each other. I winced a bit, only opening it far enough for us all to squeeze through before releasing the iron handle. I then shone the light through the door, waiting a moment before motioning for Jerome to follow me.

    ~Go back...~

I froze and Figment started to snarl loudly as the words, barely above a whisper, brushed against my mind. I whipped the light back and forth, but saw nothing that would explain the voice. However, a moment later something abruptly dropped down into the path of the flashlight; it turned out to be a Woobat. The fluffy blue bat chirped at us questioningly, but I could tell this wasn't what had spoken to us. Whatever it had must have retreated, because Figment stopped his growling. I could hear his claws clacking against the floor as he prowled around, though, intent on keeping me and my Trainer safe.

“I don't suppose a Woobat holds any interest for you?” I asked, glacing back at Jerome. Something told me he hadn't heard the words, that only myself and Figment had been privy to them. Whether that was good or not was hard to tell, but at least for now Jerome wouldn't be distracted. I had to keep myself from constantly looking around, instead settling for an adrenaline-boosted sense of hyper alertness.

My ranger suddenly froze and her Trenevant let out a snarl. I wasn't quite sure what had happened or what they saw or heard. I couldn't see anything.

“I don't suppose a Woobat holds any interest for you?” She finally said. I followed her gaze towards the flying bat and shook my head.

"No, not interested in that Pokemon." I said, preparing another doll in case it didn't want to leave us. I wasn't sure what she saw or heard, but I knew this Woobat had nothing to do with it. "Let's keep going. I know something interesting has to be down here."
