"This area is actually a mix of forest-like and wooded areas. It is dense and never gets too bright. There are many kinds of flowers and bushes, and the ground is covered in inches-thick leaf litter. In the middle of this area is a small pool of clean water. Ranger Outpost Number Three is located here."

    Ranger Sara

I sat upon Uorkei, my bull Salamence, as he lazily circled around the Woods. Below us was a wide expanse of green, the canopy of the large, heavily wooded area that stretched for several miles in all directions. Random birds flew in small flocks from here to there, and various Flying Pokemon went about their business up here as well.

I reclined on Uorkei's back, not at all concerned about falling off. The Dragon's flying was so smooth I wasn't jostled at all, and I wasn't worried about rolling off his wide back. I laid there and stared at the clear blue sky, enjoying the warmth of late-morning sunshine on my face and the feel of a cool breeze blowing over me. My eyes drifted closed as I relaxed, thoroughly enjoying my respite from the day's work.

I was about to doze off when my radio squawked at me. I sighed and sat up, opening my eyes as I pulled the bulky, square black object from my pants hem. I depressed a button, walkie-talkie style, and spoke.

    "Sara here."

"Sorry to bother you on your break, ma'am, but there's a Trainer here named, er...Kingdom...who wants to go through the Woods. Since you're there already I figured I might have Shemo teleport him there to join you."

"That's fine," I replied, smiling a little. The young receptionist, whose name was Brad, sounded rather worried about interrupting me. "Tell Shemo, the Natu, to bring the Trainer to the northern side of the Woods and I'll meet him there."

"Yes ma'am," Brad answered, and my radio gave a tinny squeal to signal that he'd closed the line. I clipped the radio back on my pants and tightened my legs around Uorkei's sides. He had heard the conversation and now angled towards the northern edge of the Woods, slowly losing altitude as he flew. We were about three-fourths of the way there when a dull CRACK reached my ears, so faint I could barely hear it. The blast of bright light that accompanied teleportation was lost in the bright sunlight. I leaned to one side and raised a hand to shade my eyes, peering downwards as Uorkei started to fall faster earthward. After a moment I spotted the Trainer, and within a minute Urokei landed with a loud, heavy thud about five feet from the young man. I patted the Dragon's neck and slid from his back, leaning against one of his thick forelegs and greeting the Trainer with a nod and a smile.

"Hey there, Kingdom, my name is Ranger Sara, and as you can probably tell, I'll be taking you through the Woods today." I held out a hand in an offer of a handshake, wondering if the young man would approach to take my hand or not. A lot of people weren't too crazy about getting close to a full-grown bull Salamence, even if he clearly was a Trainer's Pokemon. I couldn't say I blamed them.

I loafed around in the Outpost for the Woods, waiting for my Trainer to show up. He was supposed to be escorted here by one of the Rangers from the Docks, since he was bringing a rehabilitated Wurmple back to be released here anyways. Near the window on a specially-built perch was my Pidgeot, Feather, who was dozing in the warm morning sunlight. Curled in a ball beneath her was Cynder, my Ninetales. Unlike Feather, Cynder was awake and watching the door, clearly anxious to get moving. While she wasn’t as rambunctious as my Gorebyss, she didn’t like idling around either. She liked to move around, and going through the Park was an excellent way for her to burn off energy.

The door opened a few minutes after I finished a cup of hot chai. I rinsed out my cup and left it near the tiny sink in the break area, wiping my hands dry on a towel and going out to meet whoever had arrived. It turned out to be Ranger Doran and my Trainer, Gregory. Doran smiled at me and nodded, and the Wurmple on his shoulder wiggled back and forth as a manner of greeting. I was glad to see the red caterpillar was feeling better; when we’d found it a few weeks ago, it had been so injured I hadn’t been sure it would pull through.

“Morning, Miss Shade,” Doran said. “Here’s your Trainer. If you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go let my little passenger off the Doran train now.” I chuckled as the large man exited the Ranger Outpost, going to stand in front of Gregory and sticking out a hand.

“Hey there! My name is Arunei Shade and I’ll obviously be your Ranger for this outing. I hope you’ve come prepared to catch some Pokemon; the Woods is one of the most heavily-populated areas of the entire Park!”

These woods were incredible! I could practically feel the smoothness of the light brown bark covering every tree around me by just gazing at them. The pale green leaves of the trees and bushes bristled as a tender breeze drew past my face. The trees themselves towered above me which was no simple feat as I stood at six feet tall. Their intertwining leaves and branches shielded my eyes and most of the woodland from the harsh rays of the sun, but this only increased the magnificence of the woods as light poured through the crevices in the wall of branches, dispersing, casting animated shadows of the rustling leaves.

I was stolen from the study of my surroundings as a sharp sensation came over me.

“Maro-Marow.” Marowak curiously questioned, prodding me with his snow white bone.

“What is it BoneEdge?” I questioned my skull wearing friend, which was the same colourless white as his bone which when compared to his dirt brown body, stood out quite a bit.

Marowak stretched his arm out before us and past our escort, Ranger Doran, who wore a tiny, red and white worm-like Pokémon on his shoulder in a similar fashion to how one would wear a scarf.

Marowak’s bone directed my line of sight to a large, golden, nine tailed fox type Pokémon, who had its head stuck out the front door of a cabin-like-tower and when it caught a glimpse of us, it drew itself back in.

“There it is! Ranger outpost number 3.” Ranger Doran spoke softly, stepping out into the sunlight which now shrouded us in uncomfortable warmth as the wall of branches drew further apart.

“Oh! BoneEdge, you were right! It’s finally the ranger outpost!” I cheered, clasping my hands together and smiling.

Ranger Doran pressed onwards and gently pushed open the front door of the outpost, looking back at us with his dark green eyes.

Before us, holding a small towel was a female ranger, presumably my own ranger.
She was not much older than me, about 19-20, her short silver hair complimented her pretty face but her cute demeanour was destroyed by her dark, dreary clothing and the short sword she had strapped to her back.

Ranger Doran threw this young lady a smile and the worm-like Pokémon also greeted her with a soft wiggle.

“Morning, Miss Shade,” Doran began. “Here’s your Trainer. If you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go let my little passenger off the Doran train now.”

The female ranger, known as Miss Shade let out a small chuckle as Ranger Doran exited the premises. She approached me with a broad but serene smile.

“Hey there! My name is Arunei Shade and I’ll obviously be your Ranger for this outing. I hope you’ve come prepared to catch some Pokémon; the Woods is one of the most heavily-populated areas of the entire Park!” Arunei exclaimed excitedly.

“Hello Arunei, I am Gregory and this is my closest friend, BoneEdge!” I replied, also smiling. I placed a hand on Marowak's tough skull and rubbed him gently.

“Marrow!” Marowak yelped and jutted his precious bone into the air as a greeting to our new friend.

Gregory seemed ready and raring to go, as did his Marowak, BoneEdge. I rubbed my hands together at their eagerness, which was quickly beginning to rub off on me, and whistled for Cynder. The Ninetales stretched her lean body and trotted over to join us as Feather cracked open an eye to peer at us. “Keep an eye on things for us, Feath,” I said as I headed for the door. Feather shifted her weight subtly and promptly fell back into her doze, completely ignoring my words. I smiled and shook my head; the Pidgeot wasn’t lazy, but nothing could budge her when it came to morning sunbathing.

The four of us exited the Ranger Outpost, walking down the metal steps that led from the Outpost’s door to the ground. Once everyone had reached terra firma, I motioned aimlessly with my hands to indicate the sprawling woodland surrounding us. Cynder sat by my side, her tails flicking as she gazed around, keeping an eye out for the occasional aggressive Pokemon. There were times when Pokemon like Primeape wandered from the Woods, and if one wasn’t careful, encounters with such Pokemon could be disastrous.

“All right, so here’s the game plan. I’ll take the lead for the whole trip, since it’s my duty as a Ranger to make sure you stay safe. Kind of hard to do that if I’m always trailing along behind you, huh? If we run into a Pokemon you wanna battle just let me know, and the same goes for if you want to pass up anything that we encounter. You get fifteen encounters before your trip ends, though you can leave early if you want to. If you run out of Park Balls or BoneEdge faints, I’ll have to escort you out then as well.” I paused, thinking for a moment, and then went on. “I think that’s pretty much it for now. If you’re ready we can get started.”

I had just finished speaking when Cynder suddenly gave a quiet bark. I looked down and saw her gazing towards the north, and when I looked in that direction I saw a small, brown creature tottering about. It took a moment for me to recognize the shape as a Bonsly. The little tree-like Pokemon was heading our way, the three green balls atop its head waving in agitation. It was clearly unhappy about something, but it was impossible to tell at the moment what had it upset.

“Well well, it seems you might have your first encounter already,” I said, shooting Gregory a look. “If you want a Bonsly, now’s a good chance to try and get one.”

Marowak threw me an excited glance as I couldn’t help but smile. Arunei looked over us and let out a short, sharp whistle summoning the golden nine tailed fox from before. Arunei had named it Cynder, although she was of the Ninetales species.

I studied the outpost while waiting for Arunei and Cynder. Many highly technological objects and machines surrounded us and did not seem to belong here at all compared with the natural feel of the woods.

I could see Arunei talking to an elegant but threatening bird Pokémon; it seemed to be in the depths of sleep as it barely budged as she spoke. She smiled gently and approached myself and my partner BoneEdge.

I stepped in front of Arunei as we clambered down a flight of shining metal stairs which reflected the blistering light of the sun. As we reached the base of the outpost, Arunei stood arms abroad and began waving her arms erratically. Cynder fell by her friend’s side, her tails twitched as she studied her surroundings, just as my own partner BoneEdge did too. The two Pokémon seemed to be searching for something which I, myself, could not see.

The sky shone a constant blue which seemed to compress the exhausting heat of the sun. Arunei stepped out in front of me and smiled.

“All right, so here’s the game plan. I’ll take the lead for the whole trip, since it’s my duty as a Ranger to make sure you stay safe. Kind of hard to do that if I’m always trailing along behind you, huh? If we run into a Pokémon you wanna battle just let me know, and the same goes for if you want to pass up anything that we encounter. You get fifteen encounters before your trip ends, though you can leave early if you want to. If you run out of Park Balls or BoneEdge faints, I’ll have to escort you out then as well.” Arunei spoke, without even drawing a breath. I struggled to process this new information but awkwardly smiled and shared yet another glance with BoneEdge.

And so, to my delight, Arunei signalled the beginning of our adventure together and together BoneEdge and I let out a unified battle cry.

“Let’s do this!” I cheered as BoneEdge jutted his makeshift weapon into the skies above.

Just then, the atmosphere amongst the Pokémon changed.

    “Nine! Nine!” Cynder barked softly.

I could not see what the commotion was about until Arunei pointed the problem out to me.

“Well well, it seems you might have your first encounter already,” Arunei smiled, with an energized spark emitting from her eyes. “If you want a Bonsly, now’s a good chance to try and get one.”

I pondered this for a moment and studied the tiny brown Pokémon which fumbled as it walked. It had a desperate expression upon its face.

“I’m not sure Arunei, I don’t want to hurt the little guy…he seems upset” I replied, curiously watching the strange Pokémon.

Marowak strongly agreed as he too studied the Bonsly.

“Maybe we could see what’s bothering Bonsly?” I suggested worriedly.

I nodded and led the way towards where Bonsly was staggering about, Cynder close to me. We reached the little Pokemon a few minutes later, and I knelt down in front of it with a gentle smile. The Pokemon looked up at me and sniffed loudly, large tears leaking from its eyes as it hiccupped.

“Now then, it’s okay little guy,” I said in a happy, soft voice. “What’s the matter? Are you lost?”

“Bon,” the Pokemon replied, shaking its head and looking thoroughly depressed.

    “Did you lose something important?”

“Bon.” Another shake of the head.

    “Okay…did something scare you?”

“Bon,” the Pokemon answered, shaking its head for a third time. It lowered its face for a moment, then looked back up. I noticed that the tears in its eyes had vanished and were replaced with a mischievous look. The Pokemon suddenly sprang backwards and started to laugh. I stared at it, confused for a moment, and then realized abashedly that the little beast had been using Fake Tears the whole time! I stood up with a frown, dusting my hands off as the Bonsly danced about, clearly pleased with having fooled me so well. Cynder snorted, irritated by the Bonsly’s actics.

“Well, if nothing’s wrong, then I guess there’s no reason not to battle it,” I said, turning to face Gregory. “Are you ready for your first battle, or should we move on?”

The mischievous Bonsly gazed at me threateningly; Arunei seemed displeased with herself as did Cynder. Bonsly had fooled us all. I too felt quite annoyed at the thought of this Pokémon and its antics.

“Well, if nothing’s wrong, then I guess there’s no reason not to battle it, Are you ready for your first battle, or should we move on?” Arunei questioned, turning to me with a snort directed at Bonsly.

“No, lets leave it Arunei, BoneEdge doesn’t seem to like Bonsly too much after its prank.” I answered, listening to the sinister growl which Marowak was now making.

I couldn’t blame BoneEdge for being irritated, though Bonsly didn’t seem at all fazed that none of us were very happy with its joke. I gave a nod when Gregory opted to pass it up, and the four of us moved on. Bonsly followed us for a few minutes, but then got bored and wandered off, most likely to pester someone else.

We were soon encased by the wooded area, the harsh sunlight muted greatly thanks to the thick canopy of leaves and branches above us. Dappled shadows played across the trunks of the trees and the leaf-litter covered ground, making perfect hiding spots for smaller Pokemon. I sighed softly when we were out of the direct sunlight, but Cynder didn’t seem as happy to be in the shade. Well, of course not; she was a Fire Pokemon, after all, and she loved nothing more than laying out in the baking midday sun. It made me hot just thinking about it.

As we walked, I noticed strange shapes on some of the trees we went by. I finally paused at a smaller tree that was covered in the things; closer examination revealed that they were Nincada husks. Well, this explained the sudden increase in Ninjask and Shedinja populations. Apparently it was time for the older Nincada to evolve, and these husks were all that was left of their previous forms. Some of the husks turned out to be Shedinja, but they always faded away when I spotted them.

Then I noticed a husk that seemed far more solid than the others. I slowly approached it, and the husk abruptly flew away from the tree. The cicada landed on the path we were walking on and started to emit a loud, raucous noise. The little gray insect seemed either startled or angry, it was hard to tell, but there was no denying it wasn’t happy about our presence.

“Geez, I forgot how loud these things can be!” I said, almost having to shout to be heard over the Nincada. “What’s your call on this one?”

After several minutes we managed to shake of that pesky Bonsly. We arrived within a powerful shade which cloaked us in its sensational coolness, much to the discomfort of the fire Pokémon Ninetales who growled as she scuffled at the leaves beneath her.

Arunei studied the odd coated trees which surrounded us. Her eyebrows furrowed as she curiously studied a thin brownish layer which seemed to dissolve into nothingness.

Marowak brushed his thick club along the trees base and send small bug like Pokémon rattling into the shadows. Marowak was not one to be easily scared and sniffed as these ‘weaker’ Pokémon fled.

Suddenly, a screeching noise pulsated throughout the area and I instinctively cupped my ears as did Marowak. I turned with frustration to find a small, greyish insect type Pokémon, glaring at me with fear.

Over my shoulder and in between the shrieks of the Pokémon, I heard Arunei yell.

“What’s your call on this one?”

I again studied the greyish insect and how it cowered in fear.

“Not this, it doesn’t look much like a fighter!” I bellowed over the astonishingly loud screech.

Marowak agreed and waved its weapon at the Pokémon disapprovingly.

    Kingdom w/ Richard the Cubone

Kingdom strode up and shook hands with the Ranger. "Nice to meet you, Sara," he said in a pleasant tone of voice. Despite being a relatively new Trainer, the sight of the Ranger's Salamence fascinated him.

"This is my partner, Richard," Kingdom continued, motioning to the Cubone standing at his right. The Cubone held up its club-like bone in a sort of salute, with a chirp of "Cu-cubone!" ("Nice to meet you!").

"So, it seems like a rather lively forest," Kingdom said, looking around at the surrounding foliage. The chance to acquire new Pokemon gave him a sense of excited anticipation. "You know," he continued, turning to Sara, "I've been hearing rumors of a Teddiursa with an odd fur coloration; it's not green like a normal 'shiny' Teddiursa, but white. I wonder if you've ever seen anything of the sort around here," he asked her.

Gregory turned down the offer of fighting Nincada, which I was actually quite grateful for. I was fairly certain that if I had to listen to the Nincada’s shrill screeching for much longer, I was going to go crazy. Pressing my hands over my ears to try and muffle the sound, I glanced at Cynder and shouter, “Chase it off!”

Cynder didn’t need to be told twice, since the high-pitched noise was probably causing her more pain than any of the rest of us. Inhaling deeply, the Ninetales released a loud howl that was more like a roar, the sound oddly deep and powerful for such a slender creature. Nincada, startled by the Roar, immediately ceased screeching and scurried off into the undergrowth.

As the ringing in my ears died down, Cynder sat down and whined softly, rubbing her ears with her paws. She’d be sore for a while, and I thought about recalling her until her ears had a chance to recover from the brutal assault Nincada had used on us. Before I could, though, her body tensed and she suddenly turned to face to the left, her fur bristling. A growl started to rumble in her chest as she hastily stood, her nine tails all lifting straight into the air. Her hackles rose and she lifted her lips in a snarl, all in all looking for more upset than I’d ever seen her.

Then I heard a lumbering sort of sound and the occasional heavy snort. I faced the same way Cynder was and saw a literal bear of a Pokemon, slowly coming towards us at it searched for various things to eat. The Ursaring was shuffling forward on all fours, using its powerful claws to dig at the ground or rip out chunks of woods from trees as it foraged. Occasionally it reared onto its hind legs to inspect something, the soft beams of sunlight playing over its dark brown fur.

I was getting ready to suggest moving on when the Ursaring glanced in our direction, rearing up when it spotted us and instantly becoming alert.

“I hate to rush you, Gregory, but you really need to decide if you want to fight this thing or run. We only have a few seconds to retreat before it sees us as a threat, and if that happens it might attack.”

“No, I can’t say that I’ve ever heard of anything like that,” I replied, shaking my head. “We’ll certainly have to keep an eye out for something like that.” Though I doubted we’d run into a white Teddiursa; if there was one living on the island, it was one of hundreds spread over a large area. Heck, we may not see a single normal Teddiursa, let alone a uniquely-colored one.

We headed onward, following the dirt path that twisted and twined through the heavily wooded area. We didn’t get very far when a Pokemon the size of a large dog sprang from the undergrowth onto the trail, its head lowered as it stared at us. It had a powerful, compact body covered in purple scales, and a wicked horn jutted from its forehead. Large ears swilled constantly, catching each noise as the Pokemon watched us with its dark sapphire gaze.

“Oh,” I muttered softly, barely loud enough for Kingdom to hear. “This Nidorino is a troublemaker. He always tries to force a battle with Trainers who are new to the Park. I recognize him by his horn; if you look close you’ll see about an inch is missing from the tip.” I sighed, watching the Nidorino as he pawed the ground and snorted softly, sounding like an impatient bull. “What do you want to do? Battle or keep moving?”

    Gregory

I winced in sheer pain as the Nincada’s aggravating shriek tore though my mind.
I gritted my teeth and turned to Marowak who had his rough, dirty claws pressed to the sides of his snow white skull.

“BoneEdge…” I stuttered, attempting to plan an attack in my muddled mind as the sonic scream disassembled any train of thought.

But suddenly and thankfully, Cynder, the Ninetales elegantly slithered towards the troublesome Pokémon and released a magnificent howl from the depths of her existence.

The Roar was evidently a success. I watched the now silent Pokémon scurry beneath the undergrowth, granting us peace and relief.

Marowak shook his head furiously and grunted wildly. I still held my shaking hands over my ears as even the bristle of the leaves caused slight pain. Although we were in pain, Cynder seemed the worse off.

She whimpered and threw he paws to her ears. Arunei studied her faithful companion worriedly and I knew she was considering giving the poor creature a deserved rest. But within seconds, Cynder was on all fours, growling beautifully to her immediate left, tails poised in the air.

Off in the distance, to which was no doubt what Cynder was upset about, was a large darkish brown bear with a perfect bright yellow ring circling its stomach. It crawled along on all fours, sunlight bathing its back as it studied the various bushes and trees.

I could see Arunei to my right begging to turn to flee the scene and I also decided I must follow her, but Marowak stood in his place his eyes glaring at this worthy opponent.

“I hate to rush you, Gregory, but you really need to decide if you want to fight this thing or run. We only have a few seconds to retreat before it sees us as a threat, and if that happens it might attack.” Arunei announced.

I again looked to my partner Marowak and received a determined nod back from him.

“We’re ready Arunei! BoneEdge is one brave Pokémon and he seems up to the challenge!” I replied with approval from my partner Pokémon, his determination empowering me.

“Let’s go BoneEdge! Use Focus Energy!” I commanded excitedly.

Marowak closed his eyes as the Ursaring stood before him, cautiously aware of what we were planning. Marowak began to breathe with accordance to his concentration and stretched his body with calculated force in his movements, his breathing slowly but surely gained momentum and he readied himself for battle.

Arunei and Cynder stood silently to my side as I shouted another command.

“Bone Rush! BoneEdge focus on hitting him where it hurts!” I shriekd full of opptimism and hope.

My voice guided Marowak to artfully release his precious weapon from his grasp and send it whizzing through the thin, crisp air, it traced a sharp cruve in its line of travel, masterfully sneaking around trees in an attempt to trick our opponent and catch him off guard. I followed the perfect white bone as it rained down upon the snarling Ursaring.

    Kingdom w/ Richard the Cubone

Kingdom studied the Nidorino for a few seconds, eyes tracing every inch of it while trying to gauge how Richard would be able to fair against it. After a while, Kingdom turned to Richard and asked, "So, whaduya think, dude? Should we go for it?" Although not entirely sure how well Richard would be able to do, Kingdom figured that the small yet brave Cubone would be able to give him that answer.

In reply, Richard gave off a low, echoing, howl-like sound and held up his club. Kingdom knew immediately what that meant.

"We'll go for it," Kingdom said to Sara as Richard took his battle position, eyes glaring at the Nidorino through the eyeholes of his skull helmet. "Richard, start by focusing your energy (Focus Energy) and wait for Nidorino to make his move."

I moved out of the way as Gregory commanded BoneEdge to begin with a Focus Energy. The Marowak obeyed instantly, calming himself and greatly focusing his strength, making it all the easier to find weak points on his foe. As he did that, Ursaring snorted loudly and crashed back down to all fours, shaking itself and trundling forward.

When Gregory told BoneEdge to execute a Bone Rush attack, the Marowak whipped his club around with such speed and power that it literally became a white blur moving through the air. The skill with which it was flung meant it avoided trees and other obstacles as if it were a sentient creature, and it was this skill that threw Ursaring off. Uncertain as to where the bone would come from, the lumbering bear decided to attack the wielder instead. Rearing up and taking a two-legged stance, the Pokemon lifted a foot and then slammed it into the ground, causing dirt and leaf litter to fly into the air. I could tell it was getting ready to try an Earthquake, but before it could get the power and momentum built up, BoneEdge’s club whirled into view and slammed into the bear’s belly.

Ursaring gaff a loud whuffing noise as the air was knocked from it by the blow. Falling back to all fours, it wheezed for a moment before giving an angered bellow. Anger in its dark brown eyes, the Pokemon suddenly charged forward with surprising speed. It roared loudly as it barreled forward, trying to paralyze BoneEdge with fear so its attack would hit.

“Gregory!” I called worriedly. “Ursaring is trying to use a Counter attack! If BoneEdge doesn’t move he’ll take twice as much damage as Ursaring did!”

OOC: Remember to describe your attacks as they happen, or in the case of combos as they will happen, Kingdom. It makes your attacks hit harder and also makes it more likely that they’ll do what you want, not to mention giving them a higher chance of getting their secondary effects.

Kingdom and Richard seemed determined to do this, so I moved away a fair distance as not to interfere with the battle (unless needed, of course) and let things be done as they would. Kingdom ordered Richard to use a Focus Energy move, and the little Cubone closed his eyes to focus on the battle. Unfortunately, Nidorino decided this would be a good time to attack. Stomping at the ground, the horned Pokemon charged forward, head lowered and horn ready to stab.

“Kingdom, tell Richard to move!” I called out. “A Nidorino’s horn secretes deadly poison! If he gets hit with it, he might get badly poisoned!”

Whether I had fouled his plans or if he had already decided to do something else was uncertain, but as I spoke Nidorino suddenly slid to a halt about four feet from Richard, jaws opening wide. To my utter surprise, the Poison Pin Pokemon spewed forth a small but speed stream of steaming, crystal-clear ice. It was startling that a Pokemon like Nidorino knew such a move; either he had once belonged to another Trainer, or his father had known the attack and passed it on.

How he knew the move didn’t matter, though. That Ice attack would hit Cubone twice as hard, since Ground Pokemon were susceptible to Ice attacks. Thankfully, Richard completed his Focus Energy, but it seemed as if he were still a bit distracted. Most likely he had hastily finished the move, not wanting to continue standing around and get hit by the Ice Beam.

Marowak's attack successfully hit the intimidating bear Pokémon. I cheered for my partner in delight but was ripped back into the battle when I heard the worried tone in Arunei’s voice.

"Ursaring is trying to use a Counter attack! If BoneEdge doesn’t move he’ll take twice as much damage as Ursaring did!” Arunei called out, slightly panicked.

“Counter!?” I gasped, not sure what to do next and quickly glanced around at my immediate surroundings, and then I saw it, something caught my eye, the pure determination which seemed to pour from BoneEdge. Nothing could scare this BRAVE fighter!

“You heard Arunei BoneEdge! Let’s move!” I signalled to Marowak as I clenched my sweating fists. “Leap into the bushes and use Bonemerang to confuse your opponent!”

Marowak did so, and with an artful, calculated movement, his feet became disjointed from the pale green grass and slowly he rained down amongst the emerald green bushes.

This did not derail Ursaring’s line of attack, but hopefully Marowak's next movement would.

“Let’s do it BoneEdge fall back and use your Bonemerang!” I ordered, finishing his graceful transition.

This time as Marowak released his pallid weapon while falling gracefully into the tightly knit bushes, I could see glimpses of the ashen bone soar feverishly amongst the greenery, hoping this would cease the bear’s onslaught and confuse him as to where Marowak resided, even unbeknownst to me.

Ursaring’s charge might have been fast, but even when moving at an all-out run, an Ursaring couldn’t move more than maybe twenty miles an hour. The time it took BoneEdge to leap into a nearby bush was a fraction of what it took for Ursaring to close the distance between himself and his foe. The Marowak fell from view, flinging his bone club towards Ursaring as the bear came to a lumbering halt, unable to turn quickly because of his bulk.

Unfortunately for him, he turned just as BoneEdge’s Bonemerang closed in on him, smashing full into the Pokemon’s snout. Roaring in pain, Ursaring swatted at the bone club, which veered away from the blow. But it wasn’t done yet. Due to the way it had been thrown and its exact speed, the bone arched through the air and made a return trip. Ursaring, no longer watching the club, was struck again on the right side of his head. This blow was weaker than the last, but it surprised the bear and made him stumble to the left.

As the bone vanished into the woods, Ursaring let out a tremendous bellow of rage. Standing up once more, he stalked to the tree nearest to the bush BoneEdge had jumped into. Without checking to see if the Marowak was still there, the Hibernator Pokemon lashed out at the tree he was next to. The force of the blow was so strong that the entire tree shuddered, and a large fissure appeared in the trunk. Another blow and the tree emitted a sharp crack, slowly tilting to the left. Giving the tree one final strike, Ursaring succeeded in doing what his kind are prone to doing, which is knocking down trees.

The tree fell, slowly at first but quickly building up momentum. It would end up crushing a good number of bushes, including any BoneEdge could be hiding under. After felling the tree, Ursaring roared again and clashed his claws together, lips raised into a snarl as he waited for his foe to emerge.

    Kingdom w/ Richard the Cubone

Richard finished his Focus Energy rather quickly, but managed to follow up with Kingdom's next command: "Richard, throw a Bonemerang at Nidorino's Ice Beam, then take the opportunity to get out of the way.

The little Cubone complied, reeling back his club arm before forcefully and expertly throwing it right in the path of the Poison-Type's Ice Beam. The Club collided with the Beam, stopping the attack briefly, allowing Richard to scurry to the side and out of the Ice Beam's line of fire. All the while, the Bonemerang attack continued to spin against the Ice Beam attack.

Kingdom knew that, although Richard was safe for now, the Nidorino could have another trick up his proverbial sleeve. Still, it wouldn't hurt to follow up the attack. "Richard," Kingdom called out, "circle around to the Nidorino's side and hit it with a Headbutt!"

Richard nodded as he ran as fast as his stubby legs could enable him to and, once facing the Nidorino's side flank, held down his head and began to charge forward with earnest.
