“No, I will not allow you to heal yourself!” Eric yelled in alarm at Duosion when he realized what it was trying to do. He dropped his bag to the ground and immediately started to rummage through its contents, muttering under his breath.

With a triumphant cry he came up with a Hyperball. He kissed the ball and said, “Come on... Please work.” He threw the blue and white orb at the green Duosion.

Duosion’s eyes widened in alarm when it saw the ball sailing towards it and tried to dodge. But a second later it was enveloped by the red energy of the ball and sucked into it. After three long seconds a ding sounded and the Hyperball stopped wiggling.

“Nice, that was pretty close at the end,” I said going up and retrieving the filled ball. “Do you want to finish this run up or head home?”

Duosion was captured, now Absol could relax knowing its hard work paid off. Of course a mild assist did need to go to Ambipom.

"I give credit where credit is due, and thanks to your Fake Out Ambipom we were able to pull that off. Thanks for your help, and now you can walk along outside of your ball since you took no damage," I said smiling to the monkey, and then turning my attention to Gaius.

“Nice, that was pretty close at the end, do you want to finish this run up or head home?” he asked.

"Well, with only two Pokemon left to go before I need to leave, of course I'll finish up. I've only caught two things so far, so hey you never know, something I want might end up coming my way. I'm ready to keep going whenever you are."

“That works, if we backtrack a little there is a side path that will led us through this cave system and out at the gate.”

Once he agreed I turned around and followed our tracks until we reached the previous juncture. Once there I took the other path and followed it until we reached a side tunnel that led to the top and eventually the gate. But blocking that side tunnel was the sun-shaped Pokemon known as Solrock.

“Crap, another one of the buggers.”

We turned around to leave, but once again, like with Woobat, a familiar face showed itself. It was the same sun Pokemon that I passed on before, a Solrock. Woulda been more ironic if I ran into a Lunatone instead, but it wouldn't have a made a difference, I would have ran from that just like I would from Solrock.

"Two suns, well that's a new one," I said jokingly, as Gaius said, “crap, another one of the buggers.”

"I was thinking of the same thing. Either way though I'll pass on this like before. Just to be safe let me get a Pokedoll ready, and whatever way I flee from this, via running or doll, lets get onto a final encounter."

“Two suns, well that’s a new one,” Eric quipped. “I was thinking of teh same thing. Either way thought, I’ll pass on this like before. Just to be safe let me get a Pokedoll ready, and whatever way I flee from this, via running or doll, let’s get onto a final encounter.”

“We can do that,” I replied, turning to face the monotone face of Solrock. “You going to get of our way?”

The orange and yellow Pokemon just floated there, it’s face expressionless and uncaring. I sighed in defeat when it made no action to move. “Alright, here’s your doll,” I said to the Pokemon, placing the doll on the ground and away from the side passage.

Only then did the Pokemon move and leave us alone. It took us a long ten minutes to make it through the tunnel and exit out the end, into a grass field on one of the hillsides. I pointed out the gate arches to Eric.

“Gastly,” a voice from the tunnel said.

    Male @AmericanTreeFrog

Once we got away from Solrock we started heading down a tunnel. It was a kind of long tunnel, I wasn't sure how long it took, but it was at least a good ten through fifteen minutes before we reached the end of it. Once we reached the end though the whole run seemed to pay off when I heard a voice say, “Gastly.” I turned my attention towards it, and right there I saw a Gastly floating. This was wonderful, Gastly was one of a few Pokemon that I came here for, so ending a rather crappy run with one seemed perfect. Gengar was an incredibly powerful Pokemon, and could do some great things in the right hands. This is why I wanted one, I wanted it to go with my other Ghost-type, the Pokemon I planned to use in this battle. Ambipom would have worked, but no, I wanted to have a battle between Ghost-types to end things.

"You didn't do much in your last battle Ambipom, but still I want you to sit this one out unless I absolutely need you. That being said come on out Chandelure," I said as the dual Ghost/Fire-type came out onto the field. I loved Chandelure, well, I loved Litwick, because it was cute and looked like a cupcake, but Chandelure comes from a Litwick so. That didn't matter though; Chandelure was incredibly powerful. The most powerful Special Attacker I've seen outside of Legendaries. It had more than enough power to stand toe to toe with anything due to some awesome moves it could learn such as; Flamethrower, Energy Ball, Psychic, and Shadow Ball. I was fairly confident it could handle itself here.

"Well Chandelure, lets start off nice and simple shall we? Use Substitute to protect yourself from any trick that Gastly might use, and then fire off a Will-o-Wisp at it!" I commanded. I didn't want to attack Gastly, not before I knew its strength and how it battled. I refused to battle blindly here. I needed to plan each move accordingly.

The plan here was more of a defensive strategy. Basically if Chandelure could get up a Substitute it would be protected from things such as Confuse Ray, for as long as it had the Substitute up. Will-o-Wisp was a bit risky due to the fact that it could miss. If it managed to hit though Gastly would slowly be weakened, and it would also be easier to capture. Felt weird starting off a battle with a defensive strategy, but after what both Golett, and Duosion showed me I didn't want to take any chances. This was the best way to start things.

First up was Substitute. The Pokemon using the move would create a decoy doll, and infuse it with energy. I didn't particularly known how they created a doll, but now wasn't the time to question that. By putting the energy into the doll attacks from opposing Pokemon would be directed to it, until the doll broke. It was a nice little temporary shield to sit behind to avoid a hit or two, or some hax. I could have just Taunted, but there are times when Pokemon ignore Taunt, and so it felt more like a gamble than anything else.

After Substitute was Will-o-Wisp. From each of its flames Chandelure would release one orb of fire, for a total of five. Once in the air the orb would become bluish-white in color, and you could see they were filled with ghostly energy, despite being a Fire-type move. The orbs would be shot at Gastly. If they hit, then Gastly would glow somewhat red in color, signalizing that it was burned. In addition to what burn would normally do, it would also cut the attack of the opposing in half. I didn't care about that anyway though, because Gastly wasn't much of a Physical attacker.

Chandelure got itself ready to do these moves. Running into a Gastly got me really excited, and I knew that I had to do whatever I could to make sure that I'd be leaving the park with it by my side.

I could see Eric’s eyes light up when he heard the voice of Gastly and turned to see it floating there, a toothy grin greeting us. Gastly weren’t much of a Pokemon now, but they grew to be the powerhouse that was Gengar.

“You didn’t do much in your last battle, Ambipom, but still, I want you to sit this one out unlesss I absolutely need you. That being said, come on out Chandelure,” Eric commanded.

It was a good choice on his part, Chandelure were in high demand because of the power they possesed, and despite the weakness the two Pokemon shared, this would be an interesting fight.

“Well, Chandelure,” Eric began, “let’s start off nice and simple, shall we? Use Substitute to protect yourself from any trick that Gastly might use, and then fire off a Will-O-Wisp at it!”

Chandelure immediately started with the first attack, a Substitute. From its energies it created a decoy that resembled it in every way, it achieved this because it infused the decoy with some of its life essence.

Next, the bluish flames of Chandelure each created a small purple orbs of fire, that circled chandelier Pokemon. And right after, Chandelure fired all five balls of fire at Gastly.

Up to this point Gastly had just been watching, grinning broadly, but now it jolted into action. It opened its wide mouth and breathed out a thick and dark fog that covered up the entire mountain side instantly. The Will-O-Wisp entered the haze and I couldn’t see whether they hit or not, but when I heard a chuckle I knew they had missed. Because the haze was so thick, I couldn’t see much at all besides the Chandelure because of its Fire type, it was essential a beacon in the haze.

A sudden movement caught my eye and I called out a warning to Eric, “It’s using Shadow Ball!”

OOC: Can't seem to hammer out a good, longish post like I use to. @AmericanTreeFrog

IC: Substitute went off without any problems. However Will-o-Wisp...well, I was uncertain about it. When Chandelure was using it, Gastly used Haze. Normally Haze eliminates any stat changes that have happened, but this time around it seemed to act like a smokescreen, and hid what was going on with Gastly. I couldn't let my guard up, this could have been a tactical decoy to get some hits in on Chandelure. I wasn't really sure, because I didn't know Gastly's way of thinking. All I knew was that Ghost-types were generally tricksters. Still not knowing what might come my way was trouble, I had an idea to try to get rid of this, but before I said anything I heard Gaius yell something out. “It’s using Shadow Ball!”

"Shadow Ball huh? Well, Gastly seems to want to go all out right away. That's fine with me, but I'm sure it's a decision it will soon come to regret. Still I needed to come up with a good idea here. I first needed to somehow get around the cloud of smoke from Haze, and then I needed to hit Gastly with something. The only question is what? There was a good amount of moves to choose from, but I didn't want to go too powerful, and knock Gastly out. This was a real predicament, because Gastly was about to strike at any second. I just needed to take a chance, and yell out the first thing that came to mind.

"Chandelure, use Sunny Day to try to clear up that Haze, and then if you can use an Astonish!" I commanded. I couldn't think of much of anything to do here. I didn't want to really hurt Gastly too much, so Ghost-type moves were out for the time being, and due to trying to intensify the sunlight, a lot of Fire-type moves were out too for getting their power boosted. This was all I could do until I knew Gastly's limits.

First by using Sunny Day I was hoping that the sun would break through Haze, and give me a clear look in at Gastly. This was the only way I could think of in order to know where it actually was, instead of blindly attacking. Just throwing attacks at random was both dangerous, and stupid. It would not only drain Chandelure of its energy, but there was also no telling what the attacks would hit. Especially based on the type, imagine if it was Fire-type moves, then it could easily start a fire. Not to mention that Poison-type moves were flammable too. If I had Chandelure use a Fire-type move, and Gastly did something like Sludge Bomb, then the end result could cause an explosion. This didn't mean that Fire-type moves would be out of the question, I just didn't want to use them blindly.

Gaius might think that Astonish was a weird choice, and well to tell you the truth it was. Chandelure was a Special Attacker, not Physical, and Astonish was a pretty weak move. But the battle only just started, and I didn't want to use a powerful like Shadow Ball right away. No sense rushing head first into this battle with a heavily powerful attack. Whenever this attack happened I needed to cover my ears due to the awful shouting that the Pokemon using it lets out. It was enough to both freak you out, and give you a splitting headache. I wasn't sure if Gaius knew or not, but I needed to at least warn him in case he didn't hear me command Chandelure.

"Hey, Gaius, I told Chandelure to use Astonish, so you might want to cover your ears!" I yelled to him. I just figured it'd be a good idea to warn him before everything began. "All right Gastly, show me what you're up to," I said to myself, as I looked over at Chandelure and waited for it to make its move.

“Shadow Ball huh? Well, Gastly seems to want to go all out right away. That’s fine with me, but I’m sure it’s a decision it will soon come to regret,” Eric stated. He thought for a quick few seconds before he came up with a plan of action and called out his next moves. “Chandelure, use Sunny Day to try and clear up that Haze, and then if you can use an Astonish!”

Chandelure fired off a beam of energy at the sky as Gastly’s Shadow Ball came slamming into the Substitute. The Substitute slowly faded from sight as the energy infused in it faded away, but with the Substitute up, Chandelure had enough time to achieve the Sunny Day. The sky above broke into bright patches of blue sky as the rays of sunlight poured into the air and dispelled the haze, showing a scowling Gastly now that its cover was gone.

“Hey, Gaius,” Eric addressed me, “I told Chandelure to use Astonish, so you might want to cover your ears! All right Gastly, show me what you’re up to.”

I didn’t need another warning. Astonish was where the user Pokemon twisted the image of its face until it was a grosteque mask, and that coupled with an ear piercing screech that could have curdled dairy.

I turned my face away from the Chandelure and watched the Gastly instead. The Gastly cringed in response to the Astonish, but didn’t flinch. And even though the Astonish was still occuring, Gastlyfired off a bright multicolored ray of energy that zoomed at Chandelure in a second and entered it. The Astonish abruptly cut off as a confused look came over Chandelure.

    @AmericanTreeFrog

Now I was annoyed. Before I was just frustrated when encountering unwanted Pokemon, but now I had become fully annoyed. Every battle I had during this run ended up with my Pokemon being confused in that battle. First with Golett and Zoroark, Zoroark was hit with DynamicPunch, which is understandable as to how it made Zoroark confused since it has a one hundred percent chance to do so if it hits. Then during Duosion vs Absol, a Dizzy Punch managed to confuse Absol. Now during this battle, Gastly used Confuse Ray confusing Chandelure. I didn't even know what to do anymore. I mean what exactly would you do when you realize all your opponent is going to do is use cheap tricks? I wasn't even going to have Chandelure attack this time around, I figured it would just be better to only focus on its confusion.

"Well, this is one hell of a predicament huh. I guess that in this sort of situation only one thing can really be done. I don't really want to do this, but Chandelure use Calm Mind. Maybe if we're lucky it'll clear you of your confusion. It's the only thing I can come up with here, so do what you can," I commanded. It was true, I couldn't think of anything to do here besides having Chandelure use Calm Mind. Normally Calm Mind would have the Pokemon focus, and calm itself to raise both Special Attack, and Special Defense, however in this case I wasn't so much after that, I was hoping this would clear its mind of confusion. Of course though I was probably asking too much here, and it would end up smacking, but whatever. I guess I could always end up switching out again, I mean I did bring six Pokemon along. Switching wasn't really my style, but if it needed to be done I'd do it. I guess I'd need to wait, and have time show me what to do.

Frustration was etched in the face of Eric, and I couldn’t blame him. It had been a long, boring run and the current Pokemon, Gastly, was being very devious and playing with the trainer’s Absol. Eric just had to make sure he didn’t let his emotions take control and make him do a decision he would regret.

“Well, this is one hell of a predicament, huh,” Eric finally said, no amount of humor in his voice. “I guess that in this sort of situation only one thing can really be done. I don’t really want to do this, but Chandelure use Calm Mind. Maybe if we’re lucky it’ll clear you of you confusion. It’s the only thing I can come up with here, so do what you can.”

It was a good idea on his part. Calm Mind not only raised the special stats of the user Pokemon but it also enabled the Pokemon to enter a state of calm. Eric was hoping that by calming his Pokemon down that the Chandelure would be able to fight through the haze of confusion.

Chandlure’s luminous yellow eyes remained open, but its movements were slower in nature and the Pokemon’s breathing settled down as the effects of Calm Mind started to take effect.

Gastly was staring quizzically at Chandelure and it took the younger Pokemon a few seconds to figure out what was happening. But when it did his face twisted in rage and his eyes started to glow a magenta color.

After nothing happened and Chandelure came out of its trance I was left wondering what attack the Gastly has used on Chandelure. But regardless, Chandelure was still confused and Gastly was putting up a determined fight.

    @AmericanTreeFrog

I was still at a loss as to what I should do. Chandelure did manage to get a Calm Mind off before Gastly disabled the move with Disable, but I really had no clue what to do. I mean the obvious thing to do was to attack Gastly, but with what? I didn't want to go at it too powerfully, but with Chandelure's Special Attack boosted now I don't think that was really possible. I could always tell Chandelure to hold back some of its power a bit, but I was unsure about that. To me it felt like more of a gamble than anything else. While I know Chandelure would normally understand if I told it to hold back, while confused it might not really know how much power its dishing out, and go at it too powerful. It was a risk, one that I didn't particularly feel like taking. The only real thing I could do was once again not have Chandelure attack, but was that really the right idea? I couldn't capture this Gastly without damaging it, and not damaging it would give it opening. This meant I needed to attack, no matter what.

"Good going so far Chandelure, now to make sure that you don't go overboard here, use an Energy Ball. I know Energy Ball is already a poor choice to use vs a Gastly, but try hold back some of your power if you can either way, just in case," I told Chandelure. It's true that under normal circumstances Energy Ball is an awful move to use against Gastly, or any Poison-type really, but in this case I had no other choice, or else I'd risk knocking Gastly out. It was okay though, weak against Gastly or not, Energy Ball should at least inflict some sort of damage, provided it even hit.

Energy Ball was a Grass-type move. As it's name suggested it was a ball formed of pure energy from nature. While the ball was mainly green in color, the innards of the ball contained a smaller, white ball of energy. While I didn't particularly know what this smaller ball was made of, I did know that Energy Ball had a chance to drop the opposing Pokemon's Special Defense, so I had to believe the smaller ball contained some sort of energy that could make this happen. I wasn't entirely sure, and well I didn't really care, because I wasn't after a drop here. All I wanted here was some damage to be dealt to Gastly. This, of course, was provided that it didn't smack. If Chandelure did smack, then I'd need to go back to the drawing board, and think of something new. I knew one thing for sure though, that no matter what I was taking this Gastly with me.

I wasn't really sure when it would try to attack, what direction it would aim in, or how much power it would put into the attack. But this wasn't the time for doubts. I didn't swap out Chandelure, because I trusted in it. Plus it's not like I sent something crazy like Shadow Ball, so I had no real reason to worry. But I did need to ask though, after this what would I need to do to see to it that I could capture Gastly? I guess I'll cross that bridge when I reach it.

I could see where he was coming from by using that particluar move. Chandelure was already a pretty powerful Pokemon and by using the Calm Mind that Pokemon had grown alot stronger. Any move that was super-effective would do massive damage to the basic Ghost Pokemon.

Something seemed to click in the mind of Chandelure and it seemed to snap through the confusion that Gastly had placed on it. Immediately a small green and yellow orb began to form in front of Chandelure’s eyes. But the Pokemon stopped it before it could reach full size and fored the Grass attack at Gastly.

Gastly for its part looked dismayed when it realized it Chandelure was no longer confused, but it moved into action quickly. I tried to dodge the Energy Ball, but part of the attack skimmed his gaseous body, drawing a cry from the Pokemon.

It responded by staring into the eyes of Chandelure and began to speak in his Pokemon language. The incantation rose when the Pokemon neared the end and with a loud cry Gastly finished the attack and immediately his height above the ground dropped dramatically as whatever attack he did drained him off a lot of health. But with a sly smile Gastly focused on Chandelure as the Fire Pokemon’s twisted in pain not a moment later.

Instinctively I knew what move Gastly had used, a powerful one with a hefty price tag. “It’s running low on health now,” I said to Eric,” it can’t take anymore attacks.”

    @AmericanTreeFrog

While the Energy Ball didn't particularly make dead on contact, it did make enough contact to damage Gastly. This wasn't the real kick to it though. The true damage that came to Gastly was self-inflicted. I don't know if Gastly felt it was backed into a corner, or if it was just trying to end things to escape battle, but either way it had used Curse. Curse was a powerful, but costly move. The user would drain away half of their maximum energy, sometimes resulting in a self KO, and place a curse on the opposing Pokemon. This curse would suck away a quarter of the Pokemon's maximum health at the end of each turn. The curse, however, could simply be broken by just switching out the Pokemon, which is part of the reason why it is such a costly move to use. I wasn't sure what exactly was Gastly's true aim here, but what I did know was that it severely cut its own health, nearly to the point of self KO. I have to say that I really wasn't expecting this to happen, and that it was shocking to see Gastly go to such a major extreme. If anything I thought that I'd be the one using Curse here, with Chandelure.

“It’s running low on health now, it can’t take anymore attacks,” Gaius said. He was right, if I hit this thing with one more attack, even something small, it would easily be defeated. I could always have used Pain Split to replenish Gastly's health, but I had to just take the opportunity in front of me, and capture this Gastly right now. It didn't have a status inflicted on it like I would have liked, but it was very weak now and in a very good spot to be captured. I didn't want to have Chandelure risk a Will-o-Wisp, and have Gastly do something crazy in retaliation. No, this was my one shot at capturing it, and I couldn't let this chance slip through my fingers. All I needed to do was pick a ball to use, and thankfully I managed to have a ball perfect for Gastly; a Dark Ball.

What a Dark Ball was, was a specific Park Ball designed to be used here at Meteor Valley. In order to get this ball you needed to have 2 black apricorns, and a blue one, and then wait for the ball to be made. Because apricorns were rare to come by, the balls were powerful. They worked even better than a Hyper Ball would. This was why they were the most expensive ball to make, and why they were location specific. It was kind of funny as to how I was able to get the ball anyway. I got an Apricorn Box, and the right apricorns thanks to exploring an area of the Park for Halloween. Funny how it would lead to me getting a Dark Ball to use on a Ghost-type, it was like a continuation of Halloween.

"It's now or never," I said, as I opened up my bag. I rummaged around in it, until I found the one ball that stood out. I pulled out the Dark Ball, and made it full size. "You gave me a good deal of trouble Gastly. Using Confuse Ray, Disable, and Curse. Heh, I knew you were a trickster, it just seems that I wasn't able to do anything about that. Oh well, either way I like your spirit, and I'm going to enjoy having you be a part of my team, well provided that you stay in the ball. Personally I think it's best if you stay in the ball, because you're in no condition to keep battling, but hey it's your decision in the end," I said to Gastly, hoping that it wouldn't put up too much of a fight in the ball. I threw the empty Dark Ball at it, and just hoped that I'd see the results that I wanted.

"It's now or never," Eric said, rummaging around in his bag until he came up with a Dark Ball. Personally I think it's best if you stay in the ball, because you're in no condition to keep battling, but hey it's your decision in the end," Eric talked to the Gastly.

A good choice by Eric. It was best that he cut the strategy of Gastly short before it tried something like Pain Split. He chucked the ball at Gastly who was so tired that it made no move to dodge the incoming ball. It was sucked up and the ball only wiggled once before settling down, Gastly was captured.

I walked over and retrieved the Dark Ball. “Nice capture, you ready to leave now?”
