"Hey, John. I've got a run for you."

The voice of the beautiful receptionist back at the Registration Office, Jenny, buzzed in. I pressed the broadcast button on my radio, and responded.

"Awesome. Stream the data to my PokeDex, I'll catch ya later."

I pulled out my PokeDex. There was a progress bar on the screen, and when the data had fully downloaded from the National Park's wireless server, a Trainer's face appeared on the screen with relevant information.

His name was Ryan Chambers, and he was heading to the Great Lakes. It was his first time in the Park, but he had brought two Pokemon well suited towards dealing with the Pokemon of the Park. I immediately got the impression that he would have no trouble in the Park.

"Dragonite, we're going to the Great Lakes!" I called to my faithful Dragon. She mewed happily and did a barrel roll in the air - she loved the Great Lakes. We were flying above Mount Deckbi, which was on the opposite side of the Park. I told my Pokemon to fly fast, and she immediately jetted towards the Great Lakes.

Within minutes, we were at the Lakes. We had arrived on the very edge of the area where the Ranger Outpost was. This was where we would meet our Trainer. The Outpost wasn't much more than a bus stop-style bench beneath a small wooden roof. There was a first aid kit, a Pokemon healing machine, and not much else.

I looked around. My Trainer should be here very soon if he wasn't here already - the Lakes were adjacent to the Outpost. Hopefully, he wouldn't have any trouble finding the Outpost. I waited for him, watching my Dragonite splash in the sandy shores of a nearby lake.

OC: Show me my rolls? :3 jkjk and yes I do know that it's your Dragonite, apparently Ryan doesn't xD

I stepped off the dock onto this strange island, instantly blown back by the sheer look of the place. It was a literal utopia for Pokemon, with all types of habitats and places to live. Putting these thoughts out of my head, I remembered why I was here. I looked at my surroundings, seeing a number of places just ripe for the picking of Pokemon. However, I had already told them where I was going; the Great Lakes.

I grabbed Erik's Pokeball and released him, scratching the little electric-type's ears. He was fairly new to my team, but I knew his powerful attacks would serve a great purpose in these watery areas. We walked along, pointing out some truly beautiful scenery when I stopped. A Dragonite was playing on the shore of a huge lake, with a man who was sitting on a strange park bench, looking like he was waiting for someone.

"Let's go, Erik! Maybe we can catch that Dragonite," I said, sprinting towards the man. He looked to be a little older than me, and quite a bit more experienced. "Hi, I'm Ryan," I said, extending my hand for a shake. "Is that Dragonite a wild one?"

I heard footsteps behind me. Turning, I saw my Trainer Ryan and his Luxray.

"Hi, I'm Ryan," he said, shaking my hand. "Is that Dragonite a wild one?"

I smiled, "I'm afraid not - she's my friend. However, there is a chance that you may see one on this run, so keep your fingers crossed. For now, let's get going."

I motioned for Ryan to follow and walked over to Dragonite, who was playing in the Lakes. I told her it was time to go, and she climbed on to the sandy shores.

"For now, we're going to be walking along the shoreline," I informed Ryan. "This lake is one of five in the Great Lakes area, and it is possible to travel to each of them by following the path on the shore. Since you don't have any Pokemon capable of using Surf, we probably won't be going into the lakes themselves too much. That shouldn't be a problem though, as you can still see many Pokemon worth your time from the shoreline alone."

We began walking along the shoreline, looking for Pokemon. In the distance, I could see Magikarp Splashing in the lake. However, they were too far to consider a true encounter.

"Dragonite!" my Pokemon bellowed. I asked her what was wrong, and she pointed at a blue Pokemon slithering just beneath the water's surface. It was long, and swam towards the shoreline at a frenzy pace. What was it, though? I couldn't tell...

    "Gyarados!"

The Pokemon suddenly burst out of the water, springing itself closer to us. It landed just short of the shore, and eyed us with its ferocious eyes.

"This Pokemon is a Gyarados," I remarked. "Do you want to battle it, or try your hand at an escape?"

My ranger came, introducing himself with a smile. "I'm afraid not - she's my friend. However, there is a chance that you may see one on this run, so keep your fingers crossed. For now, let's get going."

"I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch your name," I remarked, but he was already walking away.

Slowly, I began to follow him towards his huge dragon-beast, who looked quite happy playing on the sandy shores of the lake. She surfaced, walking along the coastline as Erik joined her. The two Pokemon exchanged a silent greeting, seeming to get along well. I began to watch them before I heard the voice of my ranger, sounding like he had given this speech several thousand times before.

"For now, we're going to be walking along the shoreline. This lake is one of five in the Great Lakes area, and it is possible to travel to each of them by following the path on the shore. Since you don't have any Pokemon capable of using Surf, we probably won't be going into the lakes themselves too much. That shouldn't be a problem though, as you can still see many Pokemon worth your time from the shoreline alone."

"That sounds great! Too bad I don't have any surfers, I'm sure there are lots of great Pokemon over there deeper." I responded, sweatdropping slightly.

However, this wasn't going to bring my mood down; I was in the National Park! We continued sauntering down the craggy line of the lake, seeing life in abundance. Pokemon were literally everywhere in this place! I turned slightly to see my ranger observing a small group of Magikarp, leaping high out of one of the farther lakes. Luckily they weren't getting too close to us; the red fish didn't seem like much of a battler.

I was just about to ask for a stop when I fell on the ground, startled by a huge roar from my ranger's Pokemon. The Dragonite seemed truly afraid of something nearby, but I didn't see anything. She seemed to quiver as my ranger quickly asked her a question, not looking too pleased at all. With a point at the lake nearby, both my ranger and I instantly knew why she was so alarmed. A huge blue shadow was just under the surface of the fairly turbid water, swimming towards us at a frightening pace. It was moving faster and faster, but between my ranger and I neither of us could identify it.

"Gyarados!" a huge cry pierced the air as the water-type Pokemon burst out of the water, coming even closer to the shore. It stopped abruptly, staring at our small party with a look of malice on its face. My ranger began to speak very quietly, as if he was daunted by the beast as well.

"This Pokemon is a Gyarados," he said, but the name didn't ring a bell to me. Whatever it was, it would make a fearsome opponent. Hopefully I could catch it and tame its wild soul, stopping it from rampaging this place. Grabbing my Pokedex, I began to read up on this monster.

"Once it begins to rampage, a Gyarados will burn everything down, even in a harsh storm." the Pokedex said in its usual monotone, leaving me paralyzed with fear. So this really was a strong Pokemon...I was going to have to be very careful about how I did this.

"Do you want to battle it, or try your hand at an escape?" my ranger remarked, reminding me that the Gyarados wasn't exactly going to stay there forever.

"I think I'll try to capture it." I retorted, just a little bit of fear in my voice as well. Erik growled when he heard my decision, not looking too happy to fight. However, he knew that his typing would allow him to win, and I had full confidence in my Pokemon that they could overcome this. Stepping towards the Gyarados with Erik at my side, I started the fight.

"Okay, Erik! Let's try to bring him out of the water, then use Discharge!" he didn't look too happy about being shark-bait, but Erik knew that he couldn't use his powerful electrical moves with the thing still in the water. Although it would cause more damage, I didn't want to hurt anything else living in the water; there had been a VERY long contract about this whole issue and they had the right to throw me out if I was harming the environment. That wouldn't be the best way to end my first expedition out here in the park, so I wanted to make sure that I was a good environmentalist this time.

Even though I was trying to be eco-friendly, I realized that electrical moves would do nothing if the ground was so sandy. I thought about it for a moment, but remembering the wet spot that my ranger's Dragonite had left on the place gave me a great idea.

"Go lure him in! But make sure you get some water on you, and spread it around!" I said, thoughts racing through my head.

Erik nodded his head, bristling up his fur as he came a little closer to the Atrocious Pokemon. He stepped up, almost letting himself touch his foe. At this point Erik was all but covered in water, even storing some in his mouth. Breathing loudly from his nose, Erik then suddenly ran back towards the land, spitting out the water as he kept trying to lure in the long water snake.

"Good work, Erik! Now build up your Discharge and wait for it to get up close!" I called out, reassuring the electric type for his help. He grunted in acknowledgement, bending down as electricity began to run through his black-and-yellow fur, tendrils of powerful light circling around him. His power revolved around his body, staying far away from the water. At this point all we could do is wait for Gyarados to come towards his doom, and a release of powerful electric energy was waiting for him.

OOC: Gender please. Also, sorry if the post is a little long. I only noticed after I finished lol.

"I think I'll try to capture it," Ryan said. There was a bit of fear that was evident in his voice - evidently, his PokeDex's entry on Gyarados had intimidated him. It spoke volumes to his courage that he was going to battle the Pokemon. I had a Gyarados of my own, and he was a ferocious battler. If Ryan could capture this Pokemon, it would definitely help him as a Trainer. However, that was much easier said than done.

"Okay, Erik! Let's try to bring him out of the water, then use Discharge!" Ryan commanded. His mindset impressed me - he clearly had an eye out for the ecosystem of the Great Lakes. Very few first-time Park-goers had such a mindset.

Erik, however, was clearly unhappy with his Trainer's decision. It was perfectly understandable - initiating in battle with a Gyarados was near-horrific for a Pokemon. He took a step towards Gyarados.

Gyarados looked at Erik. They locked eyes, and I could see that thoughts had been exchanged through the two's glares. I remembered Erik had Intimidate, and most Gyarados did as well. Unless this Gyarados was one of the few that possessed the Moxie trait, it would have Intimidate as well. That would mean both Pokemon would Intimidate the other, as funny as that sounded.

Erik took another step forward. Gyarados swam closer to the shoreline. Their eyes were still locked. As a Ranger of the Park, I could tell how Pokemon usually felt - I worked with wild Pokemon so much that that ability to recognize a Pokemon's emotion had settled in over time. It was like being able to tell how a person felt by his body language, only instead of a person, I was identifying the emotions of a Pokemon. Granted, each species of Pokemon's body language was different from that of a human or even another Pokemon, but it was still possible to read the signs if you learned to identify them.

Right now, I could tell that the Intimidate trait possessed by both Erik and Gyarados had affected its target. However, rather than scaring the target, it had instead sparked a fiercer battling spirit into both Pokemon. I fully expected Intimidate to retain its Attack-reducing effects and reduce both Pokemon's Attack stat temporarily. However, it also seemed to me that based on their intense glares towards the other, the two Intimidate users had developed a bond of rivalry of sorts with the other. Perhaps the two Pokemon did not take well to being Intimidated while trying to Intimidate - it seemed plausible. What that meant was basically, they would remain Intimidated on the inside (resulting in a lower Attack stat), but they would also have a fiercer attitude as well. It seemed odd and almost contradictory, but it also made sense logically.

"Go lure him in! But make sure you get some water on you, and spread it around!" Ryan said. I snapped back to reality. Ryan must have been thinking while I had been distracted by the two Pokemon Intimidating each other.

Trying to refocus, I wondered why Ryan was doing what he was doing. I quickly realized the ground was sandy - if he got Gyarados on land, Discharge would be diluted by the sand. Ryan must have already noticed that, and was trying to get around that obstacle.

Erik stepped cautiously into the lake, watching Gyarados carefully. He scooped some water up in his mouth, wetting his fur as he sunk his body into the lake. Then, he turned heel and ran back up the shore. He spat out water as he did so, leaving a trail behind. I smiled. It was evident that the trail of water would be used to conduct some sort of Electric attack - it was an intelligent strategy.

"Good work, Erik! Now build up your Discharge and wait for it to get up close!" Ryan praised. Erik instantly began charging a Discharge, glowing electric blue. Small sparks snapped at the air, emanating from his body.

Gyarados was clearly intent on battling Erik - it had to be a result of Erik's attempt to Intimidate it. It crawled out of the water slowly. I could tell from the way it stared at Erik that there this battle would be a fierce one, and neither Pokemon would be giving ground to the other. It was impressive - they hadn't even attacked each other yet!

Gyarados decided to change that, however. It took a deep breath in, and fired a large green ball of fire at Erik. This was Dragon Rage. The ball of fire floated towards Erik, and I knew Ryan had to take action. I noticed at the same time that Gyarados was on the trail of water that Erik had left behind. Ryan had all sorts of options now - what would he do?

    OOC: Male please~

My plan had worked perfectly. Erik's Intimidate ability had driven Gyarados's rage over the top, and he would stop at nothing to fight us now. However, Gyarados had the same ability; Erik was looking pretty crazed as well. The two Pokemon moved closer and closer, never breaking the intense gaze. Finally, Gyarados was completely out of the water. It roared again, no longer caring about its habitat. At this point, only one thought was going through its mind. I thought this was good news; anger destroys strategy. However, I had underestimated my opponent's intellect. He was obviously preparing for an attack, one that would stop Erik in his tracks. Although my plan was complete, the water snake had a perfect way to ruin it.

He closed his maw, beginning to start something that was not going to end well for Erik. Gyarados opened his mouth again, now covered in green flames. They shot towards the electric dog in a fearsome Dragon Rage, leaving Erik with no idea what to do. It flew out over the lake, headed straight for our little party. I had to act fast at this point, or all of my setting up would be for nothing. However, the fireball was getting closer and closer, and Erik had no projectile moves...or did he?

"Erik! Forget about the Discharge for now, and use Hidden Power!" I commanded, hoping he would be able to carry it out before the Dragon Rage. The neon blue sparks around him diminished as he opened his mouth, a black ball of energy forming inside. It was not a natural move that Luxrays could learn, but he had mastered the art from a Technical Machine. This was an interesting move; it changed in type and power based on the Pokemon. Erik's was Dark; this would be perfect to counteract the dragon-type attack coming for him.

Tendrils of darkness continued to surround his body as the orb of power grew, but if Erik didn't release his attack now it would be too late. It looked as if it was just about done, but if it wasn't powerful enough the Dragon Rage would just go right through it. If that happened, it would be a serious hit for Erik. His defenses weren't the best, and I didn't want to have to risk losing him at the Park. Now all I could do was hope that my orders got to him fast enough.

"Now Erik! Let it go!" I called out, just in time. Erik growled as his head bucked back, then with a huge shove he pushed it out towards the green flames. Knowing that there was still a chance for the attack to hit him, the electric-type began running back towards his original spot. The two attacks were about to collide when I realized that I could be finishing up my original attack. I walked up to Erik, giving him a quick pat on the head before completing my orders.

"Nice work, Erik. Now, try your Discharge again! This time, let it flow through the ground for maximum power!" I said, much to his surprise. I knew that if I had made him use Discharge as he charged his Hidden Power it would be too much, but the explosion from the two colliding moves should provide a suitable camouflage. He began to cover himself in electric blue lights once again, the electricity building up inside of him. Sparks were flying everywhere, quickly losing control. I had waited too long, but this was also the best moment for me to release.

"Jump!" I exclaimed. Erik nodded as he jumped and pounded into the soggy area where he had wrung his fur around, creating an electric fuse headed straight for Gyarados. It crackled as the electricity came closer and closer to the Atrocious Pokemon, who looked like he had something else planned. Hopefully the Discharge would work this time; it really packed a punch on water types. Gyarados was a fearsome battler; even with the type advantage this was going to be a close battle. Something deep in my brain told me this was going to be interesting, and it would be a long while before Gyarados was mine.

    BP-2: Luxray VS Gyarados

    Ranger John Shay

"Erik! Forget about the Discharge for now, and use Hidden Power!" Ryan commanded.

Erik nodded. The electric blue sparks emanating from his body dissipated. They were quickly replaced by a pitch-black aura of energy. This was the mysterious Hidden Power move, which differed based on Pokemon. Based on the hue of Erik's Hidden Power, it was a Dark-type move.

"Nice work, Erik. Now, try your Discharge again! This time, let it flow through the ground for maximum power!" Ryan said.

Erik nodded again. He seemed a little surprised to be using two attacks consecutively, but did as was commanded. The Luxray launched the Hidden Power, and it zoomed towards the oncoming Dragon Rage. Meanwhile, he began charging another Discharge. The electric blue glow enveloped his body once again, and the familiar sparks began snapping away from his body again.

"Jump!" Ryan yelled just as the Hidden Power collided with Dragon Rage.

The timing was perfect. Hidden Power slammed into Dragon Rage, neutralizing both moves. Instead, it resulted in a big explosion. I could see that when Erik had leaped into the explosion, he had been struck by a bit of splash damage from both Dragon Rage and his own Hidden Power. However, I doubted it would've done enough damage to warrent worry.

I heard a splash. Erik must have been landed on to the trail of water he had left behind earlier. I realized what the plan had been, and my realization was confirmed by the loud crackling of electricity and, moments later, the terrible scream of Gyarados.

"Gyara!" the Pokemon howled in pain.

The smoke began to dissipate. Erik and Gyarados were on opposite ends of the trail of water Erik had left behind. Gyarados was laid out on the ground, and steaming a little. Weakly, the Pokemon struggled to coil back up.

It was a genius plan. Using the distraction of the smoke, Erik would leap on to the trail of water he had laid out intentionally. Gyarados was already on the trail, so it allowed Erik to conduct a Discharge through the water. Gyarados would not see the super-effective move coming.

"Gyarados!" he howled again. There was a clear sense of rage in his voice. While Discharge had definitely hurt him, he had also been riled up by the move. I knew that such a ferocious competitor would not give in so easily.

Gyarados began spinning around, slithering in a circle rapidly. Wind began to gather around him, and he quickly whipped up a ferocious mini-tornado around his body. Gyarados then sprung the length of his body at Erik, throwing the tornado at the Luxray.

I knew this move - it was Twister. You didn't see Gyarados use it often, but it was a move that was part of the Pokemon's repertoire. The mini-tornado rushed towards Erik. I looked at Ryan. How would he deal with this?

"Yes!" I cheerfully exclaimed as I watched the two attacks explode in a flurry of energy. Erik was hit with a little bit of the attack, but seemed mostly okay. On the other hand, Gyarados didn't look so good. My plan had worked its magic; the Discharge hit Gyarados for more damage than I could have ever imagined. According to my Pokedex, it was because Gyarados was a Water-Flying type. Electricity would really pack a punch on this guy, and it was working great to my advantage. Thank god I didn't choose Vienna; she was a good battler, but Grass pokemon like her would just be decimated by part-flying thing. Erik better be able to do this and get it over with, and quickly at that. We had no time to waste.

However, Gyarados was still a frightful opponent. He was hurt from the Discharge, and hot steam was still coming from around him, but slowly and surely the water-snake rose. Re-coiling his body, the water type got up with his eyes like slits; the thing obviously wasn't happy He roared with an intensity that was quite scary, and at this point he was really pissed, more than I could have ever imagined. Considering its species name (the Atrocious Pokemon, for people who haven't read like the last 3 posts), I was fairly confident that this was normal behavior for a Gyarados. However, something seemed special about this one. It might have been first-battle jitters, but I thought this was going to make a good addition to my team. Poliwrath might get a little jealous, but I could worry about that later. For now, I should just concentrate on getting the hell out of this thing's path.

"GYARAAAAAA!" the beast cried, rising back up. He was surprisingly resilient; I wasn't sure if Erik could take that kind of hit and just get back up. Even more amazing was its speed in attacking. Now THIS was a Pokemon I wanted on my side in a fight. Before the Luxray could even do anything, Gyarados was already preparing his next move. He began to slither in a strange fashion, even scarier due to the fact that it was pretty much out of the water. However, it was a more powerful move than it seemed. A miniature tornado began to surround the water beast, growing larger and larger by the second. I had just begun thinking when Gyarados contorted his body in the strangest way, literally throwing the tornado towards Erik. Looking at the Pokedex, I realized what we were going up against.

"It's a Twister!" I exclaimed, but knowing the name of the move didn't help me get rid of it. The Pokedex claimed it wasn’t that powerful of a move, but at the heat of the moment I didn’t want to have to risk anything. By the look of it, it would be causing some damage anyways. My thinking continued as the cyclone-like attack came closer and closer, making me realize that we were going to have to deflect it. Racking my brain for the attacks that Erik knew, I realized that I had no more tricks up my sleeve. Although it was wild, the Gyarados was quite a strategist; he knew that I couldn't stop him, and his huge movepool proved very useful in this case. This battle was just getting better and better. After I thought that, I instantly regretting it, remembering what my Pokemon was about to do. Erik cringed just a bit as the tornado came even closer towards him, and I suddenly realized that I hadn't yet told him what to do. The Twister was going to hit him, but just at that moment I figured out how I could use this to my advantage.

"Erik! Let the Twister hit you, but when you fly in the air charge a Thunder Fang and bite him!" I quickly sputtered, not sure if he would hear me. Luckily the electrical dog had supersonic hearing, but didn't look too happy about his orders. This was a risky maneuver; if Erik didn't hit Gyarados it would be a long fall down. However, at this point we had no choice; the Twister was unavoidable. At least we could make the best out of it, and try to get some damage on it while we still could. Gyarados was a fearsome attacker, but his defenses were seriously subpar. If I used that to my advantage….I could get this battle done in no time! If only it was that easy. With a sigh, I returned to my battle thinking, a continuous prayer to all the gods I could think of running through my head.

I just hoped that our strategy would work at this point, because I was quickly running out of options. I only hoped that soon I would have some more money for EMs, because having Hidden Power as my only projectile attack probably wouldn't be the smartest idea. Maybe Thunderbolt, or possibly Signal Beam...this wasn't the best time to be thinking about move options. I shook my head, clearing my mind as I silently hoped that my plans would work. If only I could see in the future; the suspense was killing me. As the storm-attack loomed overhead, I just felt pity for Erik. He had to fly through this...I was seriously going to need to treat him when this was over. A visit to Nimbasa City was hella expensive these days, but I was fairly sure he wouldn’t speak to me until I gave it to him anyways.

    BP-3: Luxray VS Gyarados

    Ranger John Shay

"It's a Twister!" Ryan exclaimed. A look of thought crossed his face for a moment, mixed with worry as Twister came closer and closer to Erik. It was understandable. Gyarados' decision to use Twister was a surprising one, one Ryan would not have expected or prepared for. Granted, it wasn't a very fearsome move, but taking it from an enraged Gyarados was a whole different matter.

Ryan made up his mind. "Erik! Let the Twister hit you, but when you fly in the air charge a Thunder Fang and bite him!"

Martyrdom - an interesting strategy. I watched as Erik did as his Trainer commanded, standing his ground before Gyarados' Twister. The raging tornado consumed Erik, and I could hear the Luxray howling in pain. It continued for a few moments, and I began worrying for Ryan's Pokemon.

Suddenly, I heard sparks - and moments later, the Twister instantly imploded. Erik was in the middle of where it used to be, clearly bruised and battered. His teeth were supercharged with electricity, and he softly touched down as the Dragon-type energy that made up Twister fell around him in shining particles.

I put two and two together, realizing what had happened. Erik must have, within the raging currents of the Twister, forced himself to charge up a Thunder Fang. I figured Erik managed to overpower the Twister with his self-generated electricity, and blew it up from within. It was clear that Gyarados had not been expecting this, and he was definitely far from happy. However, Erik had definitely taken damage from the move. He was cringing, and there were small cuts where the vicious currents of wind had sliced open his skin. Thankfully, and I'm sure this was one of the key reasons that Ryan allowed his Pokemon to be struck by the Twister, Gyarados' Special Attack stat was not very impressive.

Erik began charging at Gyarados with his fangs still conducting electricity. He was limping a little, but there was no realistic way Gyarados could've avoided Erik's attack - on land, Gyarados was simply too slow. Erik sunk his teeth into Gyarados, and the electricity charged through Gyarados. Gyarados' eyes widened in pain, and screamed loudly.

Despite the move's obvious effectiveness of Gyarados, I could tell that the Thunder Fang had been diluted some by Erik's Intimidated state. Granted, the move was already powerful enough with STAB and super-effectiveness that it still did plenty of damage, but I could tell from Erik's slight lack of aggressiveness that the move was not as powerful as it could have been.

Slowly, the electricity emanating from Erik's fangs faded away as Erik ran out of juice. The Luxray backed off of Gyarados, leaping backwards a bounce.

Gyarados eyed Erik with one eye. There was both deep pain and intense anger in his eyes. Angrily, he snapped at Erik, missing by inches.

"Gyarados!" the Pokemon roared. That one had clearly been a warning shot. Gyarados uncoiled himself to his full height, and with an incensed look of rage in his eyes, began thrashing at Erik.

"Ryan, this is Outrage!" I told him, instantly recognizing the famous Dragon-type move. It was one of the strongest and most recognizable Dragon-type moves. Ryan would have to do something about it, because Erik would not like taking one of these hits, even with Gyarados' Attack dropped.

"Luxxx!" Erik cried as the tornado sucked him in, leaving the Gleam Eyes Pokemon in the center of the attack. However, I quickly realized that my plan was in fact working. The intensity of the storm quickly died down as Erik stood in it, his fangs covered in yellow energy. When the Twister died down, he didn't look so good. His pelt was matted and crusty from the water, and he had many cuts where the sharp blades of wind had pierced his skin. Although he wasn't feeling too great, his attack was still ready to go. Rearing his head, the Luxray ran and pierced the flesh of the great water-beast, limping slightly. Even with Erik's reduced speed, Gyarados couldn't escape. Luxrays were known for their incredible speed, and although the water type could stay on land he wasn't the fastest. It was a foolproof plan. I cheered as I saw Erik lock his jaw onto the thing, causing some major pain.

"GYARRAAAAAAA!" it shrieked, eyes wide open as the full brunt of the Thunder Fang went in. Erik's giant incisors were still conducting electricity, which was being sent in huge spasms through the Atrocious Pokemon's body. He twitched a little bit, looking injured but still willing to go on. The attack had probably looked more powerful than it really was; although they were both furious, Gyarados's Intimidate ability had done its job well. It was still super-effective, but I knew that he could do better than that. It was the same type as him as well, but what was making it so weak? Was it some subliminal thing, like the quality in some poorly written Pokemon role play? Where did I even get these ideas, anyways? I cleared my brain, leaving only my thoughts of strategy. Turning back to the battle, I saw Erik finally done with his attack. He leaped off of his opponent, bouncing back towards me in a better mood than any other time in this battle.

"Awesome, Erik! You're gonna get a real nice reward for that," I said, petting the electric type affectionately. He purred like a little cat, changing personality instantly. It was amazing how quickly his mood could change, but I should have guessed; although Erik seemed tough on the outside, he was really a big softie. I was fairly confident about our results, but the battle wasn't over yet. Gyarados was staring at Erik with just one eye open, l radiating evil energy while at the same time looking as if he was ready to kill. He was wearing down as well, but as long as Erik was still standing Gyarados would not stop. Opening his massive mouth, he crushed his mouth shut. Erik flinched as it came towards him, only missing by a couple inches. It was really mad, no way around it.

Gyarados opened its mouth, letting out a guttural roar that shook my entire universe. He uncoiled his snake-like body, looking armed and dangerous. His fan-shaped tail smacked the sandy ground, sending wet specks of the grainy stuff everywhere. I brushed some off of my sweatshirt, grumbling quietly about how much it had cost. This was quickly answered by an even bigger clot of the dirt, which hit me just below the neck and slid down my hoodie, spreading it everywhere. Angrily wiping it off, I had a few words in my mind for this thing, but I supposed that my ranger wouldn't be too happy to hear that kind of stuff. These were naturalists; the only thing about as colorful as my language in this place was probably a Kecleon.

"You're dead." I remarked, trying my best to sound intimidating. Hopefully my ranger hadn't heard that; that would certainly be a good way to start off on the wrong foot. However, when I turned around I instantly forgot about my ranger's opinions; that was going to have to wait. The Gyarados was thrashing about in a violent manner, looking more powerful than ever. I had never seen this attack before, but my ranger quickly informed me what I was going up against.

"Ryan, this is Outrage!" he called out, much to my surprise. He had not talked very much during the battle, simply observing and occasionally mumbling something I couldn't hear. Looking at my Pokedex, I gasped in surprise. It said that Outrage was one of the most powerful Dragon moves, and a physical move at that; this was seriously going to pack a punch. Erik stood looking quite skittish, not wanting to stay in Gyarados's path. I wasn't surprised; I wouldn't want to be there either. Gyarados was a good battler as well as being scary physically; the thing was freaking huge!

"Get out of the way, Erik! Do whatever you can!" I called out, extremely alarmed for the welfare of my Pokemon. He seemed to understand, but I wasn't sure if it was just instinct. As the rampaging water-type came closer and closer, he was quickly running out of options. Walking frantically in circles, he had no idea where to go. If he went closer to At that point, I realized my worst fear; I had no way to counter the move as well as nowhere to go. This wasn't going to be great, and I had a feeling I was going to have one less Energy Powder after this.

"End this with some true strength, Erik! Counter his best move with yours...WILD CHARGE!" I said, rather dramatically for me. Weird how things get to you. Anyways, Erik didn't look too happy at all, but followed my orders. Similar to his Discharge, many sparks began to fly around his body.

However, this time they were forming a barrier of energy around him, giving his whole body an electric blue aura. It grew and grew until there was a Volt-Tackle-esqe shroud covering him. With a deafening roar, Erik began to run towards the pissed off water type, his limp much less noticeable. His speed grew as his grunts grew shorter, running out of breath but still continuing. Hopefully this would work; I knew that Wild Charge would hurt the user, and Erik couldn't risk a lot of more hits after this. His paws seemed to fly off the ground as he rocketed towards Gyarados, who was moving at about the same speed towards him. The space between them was not much; the impact was going to happen any second. Erik hissed as he came closer and closer, but I couldn't take the suspense. I covered my eyes with my hands, hoping that this would end well...

    BP-4: Luxray VS Gyarados

    Ranger John Shay

"Get out of the way, Erik! Do whatever you can!" Ryan hollered. However, there was nothing to do - Gyarados was too close. Erik tried running away, but Gyarados snapped at him almost humorously, preventing him from getting anywhere. I looked at Ryan - he'd have to do something quickly.

Indeed he did. Almost grudgingly, Ryan called, "End this with some true strength, Erik! Counter his best move with yours...Wild Charge!"

I understood why Ryan seemed to be a little reluctant to use the move. Wild Charge was, as the name implied, a wild move. It was certainly powerful, but it also hurt the user with its recoil damage. Ryan must be really desperate to fall back to this option. Even Erik seemed a little unhappy with the decision, though he loyally did as his Trainer had commanded.

"Luxray!" Erik bellowed. A large aura of electricity suddenly appeared around him, sparks snapping at the air wildly. Erik seemed to be wincing a little from the sheer voltage of the electricity, but dashed at Gyarados.

"Gyarados!" the Pokemon howled in dismay. The Pokemon knew he couldn't afford to make contact with Erik with such powerful electricity radiating from him. The Pokemon tried retreating into the water, knowing Erik wouldn't follow him with the Wild Charge active.

Unfortunately, he was simply too slow on land. Erik connected with the retreating Pokemon, and tackled him in his side.

"Gyarados!" The Pokemon screeched in a terrible voice upon being struck by the move. He instantly fell to the floor, but Luxray crumbled beside him, worn out by the move.

Again, the Attack drop from Intimidate factored in. Normally, Wild Charge probably would have Knocked Out Gyarados, or at least come very close, but the Attack drop weakened it noticeably - Gyarados was still conscious.

At excruciatingly slow speeds, both Pokemon returned to a vertical base. They were both resilient Pokemon - scenes like this where they overcome hard hits was becoming a theme in the battle.

"Gyarados!" the Pokemon screamed loudly, his eyes almost bloodshot. A proud Pokemon such as he was probably not used to losing battles. Being on the verge of losing this one must have seriously hurt his pride.

With an almost desperate look in his eyes, Gyarados began charging an orange ball of energy in his mouth. My eyes opened wide. Ryan didn't seem to know Outrage, but he definitely knew what this one was. Hyper Beam was Gyarados' signature move. Everyone knew about Gyarados' Hyper Beam, and for good reason. It was probably one of the most feared moves in Pokemon history.

I turned to Ryan, knowing he had to act quickly. Taking Gyarados' Hyper Beam so early in his Park run would be catastrophic for the remainder of the trip. Gyarados was pulling out his last card - could Ryan match his effort?

"Alright!" I said as I saw Erik make contact with the beast. It whined in pain as he charged into its side, not making it back into the water. However, Erik had taken some damage as well; it was a powerful move, but there was a drawback. He winced as he walked back, not even trying to run anymore. Returning to their respective sides, the battle looked like it was drawing to a close.

"Wow, nice work there Erik! You're doing great." I said, hoping he knew that I meant what I said. When I had started the battle, I doubted his power; he was new to the team, and it was one of his first battles. However, Erik had really pulled through. His type advantage was big, but the Intimidate had taken its toll as well. We had really done well in this battle, and I thought we were pretty close to wrapping up. The battle wasn't over yet; Gyarados still had one more tale to tell, it seemed.

"Gyarados!" he cried, his large eyes looking rather dismayed. He had taken a huge amount of damage from the Gleam Eyes Pokemon's harsh attacks, and all of us could tell that it was really hurting. Even more than the physical damage, his pride had been hurt. Gyarados were supposed to be the rulers of the sea; next to the legendary Pokemon, they were right at the top. However, Erik had prevailed; that must have hurt him deep inside. I angled myself back towards the water snake, realizing that he was certainly not done for yet. A white-orange ball was forming in his mouth, growing larger by the second. My mouth gaped wide open; it was the dreaded Hyper Beam. One of Gyarados’s signature moves, this thing could tear apart the whole ecosystem if we weren’t careful. I was going to have to do something about this, and fast.

"Hyper Beam!" I called out, but it did nothing. Damn, I do that a lot, don't I. However, the attack was getting closer and closer and I knew that Erik wouldn't be here for much longer if he took the attack straight up. However, he was also in no shape to be forming a counterattack. I realized there was only one way to get rid of this thing once and for all. I was going to have to catch it, preferably before he could do any damage with that Hyper Beam. Taking a deep breath, I prepared myself to go up against this huge beast.

Looking through my bag, I found a only Pokeball strong enough to contain this beast. It was called a Super Ball; it had cost me a fortune too, and I was hoping that it wouldn't go to waste. However, if I threw it now it would just get destroyed by the energy beam. I was going to have to do this, and fast. Dropping everything I had, I ran towards the towering menace, which looked ready to kill. Adrenaline pumping through my veins, I quickly approached the Gyarados. When I turned around , however, I saw Erik trailing me cautiously.

"Erik! This is too dangerous for you...stay back." I said, coming towards the enraged water-type. It snapped at me, making me more nervous by the second. The electric type went back to his spot, looking rather happy to not tag along. However, if I wanted to stop it, I had to do this. Only about a couple feet away, I was ready to go. I swallowed loudly, then opened my eyes and looked up at the Pokemon.

Summoning all my might, I chucked the ball straight at the Atrocious Pokemon. At this point I just ran for my life, hoping that the Hyper Beam wouldn’t hit me. This ball was my last chance; I really didn’t want to waste my last Super Ball after this. It was a perfect throw, but what if it was too late? What if the Hyper Beam had just torn it to shreds? I couldn’t take the suspense. Diving onto the ground, I hoped that I wasn’t being too dramatic and the ranger would think I was dumb. The landing was soft; it was sand, after all, but I wasn’t sure about how this was going to turn out.

    BP-5: Luxray VS Gyarados

    Ranger John Shay

"Hyper Beam!" Ryan called. I waited, but nothing seemed to happen. I sweatdropped - was something supposed to?

At any rate, Ryan began to rummage through his bag. At this stage in the game, it probably meant he was intending to try for a capture. Gyarados had taken plenty of damage - it was going to a good time to try for the catch.

Pulling a Super Ball out of his bag, Ryan called, "Erik! This is too dangerous for you...stay back." He proceeded to throw the Super Ball.

His aim was perfect. Gyarados launched the Hyper Beam just as the Super Ball was thrown - out of desperation, I guessed. The Hyper Beam hadn't been fully charged, nor had Gyarados been ready to fire it yet. It was blatantly obvious, as the Hyper Beam missed the Super Ball wildly.

Gyarados was sucked into the Super Ball. It rolled around in the sand for a few moments. I watched it. It rolled once, twice... and then three times. The familiar and resounding ding brought a smile to my face - Gyarados had been captured!

"Congratulations, your first encounter in the National Park has resulted in a successful capture on the first try," I said to Ryan, happy for him. I went over to Gyarados' Pokeball, and picked it up. I quickly wiped the sand off, and then put it in the side pouch in my backpack.

"As you may or may not know, you can only keep three of the Pokemon you capture in the National Park," I explained to Ryan. "I'll keep any Pokemon you capture during the run until the run is over, and then you get to take three of them when the run is over along with a slip to get them transferred into true Pokeballs at the Registration Office. Well, if you're ready, want to continue?"

I turned around to see the huge beast gone, a tiny Super Ball in its place. I was astonished that I had actually caught this monster, and on my first try too. It was astounding, too amazing for me to comprehend. "Yes!" I cried, celebrating as Erik joined me. My ranger spoke up again, looking quite impressed.

"Congratulations, your first encounter in the National Park has resulted in a successful capture on the first try," he said quietly, then promptly walked over to my Pokeball and took it.

"Hey! What are you doing! This is my Gyarados." I said firmly, walking over towards him. However, he seemed as if he had heard this before; it was apparently normal Park behavior. Wiping the damp ball off, he began to speak again.

"As you may or may not know, you can only keep three of the Pokemon you capture in the National Park," he explained, placing the ball in his sack. "I'll keep any Pokemon you capture during the run until the run is over, and then you get to take three of them when the run is over along with a slip to get them transferred into true Pokeballs at the Registration Office. Well, if you're ready, want to continue?"

"Give me a second." I said, walking back over to my Pokemon. He looked exhausted, but he had done a good job. He pointed gently at his Pokeball, looking like he wanted a rest. I complied, touching the center of the ball right on his nose. It sucked him in with a huge flash of red light, and I turned back to my ranger. He looked raring to go, his Dragonite by his side. I grinned.

    "Let's go!"

"Give me a second," Ryan replied. I nodded, and he went over to Erik. Patting the Luxray, he returned the exhausted Pokemon to his Pokeball.

Turning to me, Ryan nodded. "Let's go!"

We began walking along the shoreline. Farther out in the lakes, many Water Pokemon were visible splashing out of the lakes. I couldn't identify them from here, but chances were Ryan would see something that would pique his interest. It really was a shame that Ryan had no means of travelling through the water with the Pokemon he had right now.

Something occurred to me - something that could lead to much better results for Ryan during this journey. I turned to Ryan.

"Ryan..." I trailed off, distracted by something behind him.

    "Shellos!"

The Sea Slug Pokemon smiled at us. It must have been following us - it had left a trail in the sand that was synonymous with our footsteps for quite a bit of distance. Judging by the Pokemon's pink hue, it was a West Sea Shellos.

"Do you want to battle this Shellos, or try to escape?" I asked Ryan, pushing my idea to the back of mind for now.

OOC: Do posts before the encounter count towards the MCR?

My ranger and I took off, still walking along the shoreline. It was a shame I had started this run so early; just before I left, my friend had traded me a great Water-type that would really help here. I gazed over towards the center of the lake, seeing many faint shadows of Pokemon. Squinting my eyes, I realized that I had never seen anything like it. At that moment, I turned around again. My ranger seemed to be deep in thought. I was about to say something before he turned to face me, starting to speak.

"Ryan..." he said, obviously thinking. I was about to ask him what he was talking about before I quickly realized he was looking behind me. I rotated myself before noticing what he had been talking about. A little pink sea slug was following us, and judging by the path of its slime it had been for quite a while now. It smiled at us, but I wasn't too interested. This was a Western Sea Shellos; I preferred the Eastern ones.

"Do you want to battle this Shellos, or try to escape?" my ranger asked; I instantly knew what to say.

"Let's keep moving. Hopefully there are better things in here."

"Let's keep moving. Hopefully there are better things in here," Ryan said.

I nodded, and kept my eyes on Shellos as we backpedaled a bit. It seemed friendly, but if it realized we were not interested in battling it, it could get hostile - many of the Pokemon in the National Park only approached Trainers for a battle. If this Pokemon did not get its battle, it could get upset and force a battle upon us.

That was what happened. When Shellos realized our intentions to run away from it, an angry look appeared on its face. I knew that Shellos would attack us directly if we tried to run.

"You'll have to battle it, I'm afraid," I told Ryan.

OOC: Just in case you didn't remember, I am now going for a capture. xDD

My ranger and I began to move backwards, trying to get rid of the Shellos without provoking it too badly. Something in his eyes told me that this wasn't going to end well; perhaps this Pokemon had more to offer than I had first thought. It didn't seem like it was going to leave us without a fight, but if that was what it wanted then I would be more than happy to give it to it.

"You'll have to battle it, I'm afraid," my ranger said, sounding just as dismayed as I had been. However, the thing had shown spunk; I regretted trying to leave it. It did follow us for this whole time, I suppose. It wouldn't be a bad thing to battle it. Besides, it would be good practice for my Pokemon too. Why did I ever not want to battle this thing; it was great!

"Show that thing what you got, Vienna!" I said, chucking my Pokeball onto the sandy ground. A huge green dinosaur-like Pokemon emerged, the large pink flower on its back shaking as it roared. Her name was Vienna; she was my pride and joy, my very first Pokemon. However, she did have her downsides as well; the blossom upon her back was a rancid one, stinking of foul odors. When she was a Bulbasaur, it was fine; however, when the flower bloomed as she evolved these smells began to be everywhere. I didn't mind it much anymore, but it would probably affect my ranger. It was an advantage in battle, though; the powerful toxins stored in it could probably knock anything in her way out.

"Hmm...go for a Sleep Powder, but spread the powder on your Razor Leaf!" I called out, feeling more confident than last time. My opponent was a bit smaller, and I had a little bit more to work with. Vienna nodded, the flower again rustling loudly. A fine green powder spread in the air in front of her as she held her breath, not wanting to put herself to sleep. The next phase of her plan was going to be a little easier. Many razor sharp leaves that were hidden below her flower began to fall out as she whipped them towards her tiny opponent. As they flew, the dust from the powder began to collect on them, forming veritable leaves of slumber. I was pumped about this battle; it seemed a lot more fun than the last.

    BP-1: Venusaur VS Shellos

    Ranger John Shay

    OOC: Gender?

"Show that thing what you got, Vienna!" Ryan yelled, tossing a Pokeball. His Venusaur blossomed into view.

"Venusaur!" she growled, facing her much smaller opponent.

"Hmm...go for a Sleep Powder, but spread the powder on your Razor Leaf!" Ryan instructed.

Vienna complied. She fired rapidly spinning leaves at Shellos - leaves that I knew were sharpened to an edge. While the leaves were spinning too fast for me to tell, I knew they had Sleep Powder on them. Not only had that been what Ryan ordered for, but the leaves were also leaving behind a faint light-green dust in their wake - that was some of the Sleep Powder that was on them.

The leaves flew towards Shellos. Shellos tried ducking to avoid them, but some of the leaves still caught it in the chest.

"Shellos!" the Pokemon cried, wincing in pain as the razor sharp leaves ripped into it for super-effective damage. It saw the green particles, and a panicked look appeared on its face - it must have realized this was Sleep Powder. However, there was nothing that could be done at this juncture. Shellos struggled to stay awake, but quickly fell asleep.

Ryan now had Shellos at his mercy - for now, at least. Shellos could wake up at any moment, but for now, Ryan had time. How would he use it?

"Awesome!" I exclaimed, seeing my plan unfold perfectly. The razor-sharp leaves slashed against the tiny mud monster's chest, causing serious pain. It tried to dodge, but before it could do anything it fell asleep. The Sleep Powder was gladly enough; I was just making sure that it would stay down for long enough. The young Shellos seemed down for the count, at least for now; this was my time to strike.

"Vienna, another Razor Leaf! Then finish this up with a very special Vine Whip!" I called out, earning a brief nod from my Pokemon. Her leaves had grown back in the time between her attacks, perhaps not as sharp as the previous time. With a raise of her front legs, the Venusaur let her attack fly, the bladed shards of grass hurtling towards the sleeping victim. In the meantime, I informed Vienna about what we were doing.

"Okay, so you're going to need to take this." I said, pulling out a Park Ball from my sack. It wasn't the strongest ball I had, but Shellos wasn't the most powerful opponent I was going to have on this trip. Gyarados was proof of that; I was still amazed that I actually caught him on my first try! Hopefully my beginner's luck would continue.

Dropping the ball at her feet, I began to speak. "You need to take this in your vines, then, as you use Vine Whip, drop the ball. After that you'll need to pick Shellos up and drop it on the ball!"

Vienna didn't look too sure of my plan, but the familiar vines burst out of her flower, taking hold of the capsule. They flew towards Shellos, and I hoped that this would work. Even normal Park Balls were so expensive!
