    BP-2: Luxray VS Starmie

    Ranger John Shay

"Okay Erik, sit tight and use Charge to lessen the damage you receive. Then hit that thing with a Wild Charge!" Ryan commanded.

This was an interesting combination of moves. Charge did two things - it would increase the user's Special Defense stat for a short period of time (which would help against the incoming BubbleBeam), and it also doubled the power of the next Electric-type attack used (which would be the powerful Wild Charge, in this instance). It was a great move to use in a situation like this - Erik was really milking his current predicament for all it was worth.

Erik obeyed, not moving an inch as the BubbleBeam attack rushed towards it. He began using Charge, which was evident by the electric sparks that were crackling within his fur. BubbleBeam slammed into him, but I knew that because of Charge's temporary Special Defense boost, BubbleBeam's strength would be reduced quite a bit.

The electric charge around Erik began to increase in ferocity. The sparks began jumping out of Erik's fur, and a mane of electricity enveloped the Pokemon. He had made the transition from Charge to Wild Charge, and the boost in power from Charge was visible. Erik had a very deadly appearance right now - I pitied Starmie, having to look at such a thing and regard him as its opponent. It certainly didn't help that Starmie's Speed was lowered due to Scary Face.

However, if Starmie was worried, it didn't let on. Granted, it was difficult for a Pokemon like Starmie to show any emotion at all given its lack of a face. I figured that Starmie had to be at least a little concerned, but it appeared that it was also level-headed enough to actually do something about the incoming Erik.

As Erik began charging towards Starmie, the gem in the center of Starmie's body suddenly flashed brightly. The bright light made me wince, and it seemed Erik also flinched momentarily. This was Confuse Ray - a popular move amongst Starmies, and one to be very wary of. It was one of a few moves that had a 100% chance of confusing its target.

Erik seemed to lose his sense of direction, missing Starmie by a foot or two. However, thanks to the added power Charge gave it, the electric charge around Erik still hit Starmie. The Pokemon cringed as the electricity grazed its body. Even a little bit of contact to such a powerful attack as Wild Charge could do a decent amount of damage, especially when the attack was boosted by Charge and was super-effective.

Starmie backed away from Erik. It hadn't taken much damage - it was very lucky. I was sure that Ryan was going to be displeased about that, but then again, since no direct contact was made between Erik and Starmie, Erik hadn't taken any damage either. I figured it was a bit of consolation. However, Erik was confused now. I wondered how Ryan would go about with that in mind.
