Jesse took out another Pokedoll, and put it down for Crobat. The Crobat flapped around the doll, similar to how Zubat flapped around the one earlier. "Right, let's keep going," Jesse said. This was weird, I thought. Jesse could have just as easily taken a picture of Crobat, and had he done that he would have gotten some money for it, and would have still escaped from Crobat without a battle. Maybe he just forgot, or maybe he was just in a hurry, I didn't know.

We continued walking down the hall, listening for anything that may have come out. There was still remains of the electricity Zapdos produced in the air, and there was a strong chance it was luring some Electric-type Pokemon in. I was right, another Pokemon could be heard coming our way. It was a Steel and Electric-Pokemon, made up of three Pokemon. Each part was its own little body, each a magnet with an eye, and three screws on each individual body. Six magnets in total, each with blue, and red on both sides.

We returned to looking down halls after halls, keeping our ears perked up to listen for any stray sounds. I could still hear the remnants of the surge of electric that Zapdos left. I couldn’t believe that it could just create a thunderstorm worth of power in just a short time. I guess that’s why it’s a Legendary Pokémon.

I remembered when I met my first Legendary Pokémon. My travelling partner, Kipper, and I were travelling by sea by boat when we saw an injured blue Pokémon drifted on the side of our boat. It had stubby blue feet and floppy long fin-like arms. Its onion-shaped head, which had a pair of long blue antennae, was much larger than its body, which had a red ruby emblazoned in the middle of it. We picked it up and took it to a Pokémon Center. Apparently it was Manaphy, the Seafaring Pokémon and a Legendary Pokémon.

It had been captured by Team Poison, an evil group that wanted to study Legendary Pokémon by subjecting them to inhumane experiments. We had faced them a few times before. We were able to nurse Manaphy back to health, after dealing with the Team Poison group that followed us, of course. Manaphy was so grateful to us that it gave us two gifts. One was a pendant made out of the red gem on its chest, which granted healing properties, and the second was an egg, that I let Kipper have, since he loved Water-type Pokémon. The egg hatched into a Phione, which was much heavier and taller than its parent, and didn’t have the yellow marking over its eyes, instead blue ones, nor the two antennae which seemed to have fused together.

As we continued on I heard the electric noise grow louder and louder. The residual electric from Zapdos must have attracted some Electric- or Steel-type Pokémon during the fight with Porygon2. Gary and I slowed down trying to figure out where the sound was coming from, but sure enough, whatever was creating the sound was drawing closer to us.

Out of the shadows of some broken overhead lights there stood a cluster of Magnemite. What luck, they were both Electric- and Steel-type Pokémon. Each Magnet Pokémon was comprised of a grey, metal, circular body that has a single big eye in the center. On the top of this “head” was a large screw that resembled an antenna, and right below its eyes were two smaller Phillips head screws that didn’t really seem to do anything. This was because of the fact that most of Magnemite’s attacks came from the two horseshoe shaped magnets on either side of its body. Each had a blue tip and a red tip, representing North or South poles.

As they approached, I could see that they were surrounded in a strong magnetic wave of electricity, possibility and effect of Zapdos’ thunderbolts. They pulled together and shone a bright white. Before our eyes the three Magnemite had evolved into a singular Magenton. Magneton basically looked like three of its pre-evolutions held together, but it only had one of its antenna-like screws, which remained on the top most head.

I couldn’t help but notice the similarities between Metagross and Magneton. Both of them used electromagnetic force to levitate off the ground, both were Steel-types and they both seemed to evolve by assembling more members of themselves together.

“Care to take on this Magneton?” Gary asked.

“Yes,” I said excitedly. I reached to my belt to get Gastrodon’s ball. It had been a while since he had battle, and I never gave him a Super Potion, but I felt like he could handle this. His part Ground-type body meant that he would nullify any Electric-type attack, and his other type, Water, would resist a portion of Mangeton’s Steel-type attacks.

I released the pink, West-Sea, Sea Slug Pokémon into the hallway, mimicking back to the beginning of my expedition here at the Power Plant.

“Kingst, use Mud Bomb,” I commanded, as I liked to use the move as an opening.

Gastrodon sucked in a breath of air, expanding his chest. He let the mud and dirt well up inside him like large bullets being charged into a gun. Gastrodon then fired the barrage of brown mud balls towards Magneton.

I waited to see what this Electric-Steel-type would do in this situation.

“Yes,” Jesse said happily, as he brought his Gastrodon back out. In theory Gastrodon was a good choice; Magneton had a quadruple weakness to Ground-type moves, Gastrodon's Ground-typing made it immune to Magneton's Electric-type moves, and due to Gastrodon's Water-typing, Magneton's Steel-type moves would only do half the power they would normally do. Of course, Magneton knew moves outside of just Electric, and Steel ones, so we would need to wait and see what would happen.

“Kingst, use Mud Bomb,” Jesse commanded his Gastrodon. Similar to before, Gastrodon sucked in some air, then within its body the water mixed around with whatever bits of dirt Gastrodon might have in itself, and formed a ball of energy filled with mud. It spit the ball right at Magneton, as it had done earlier vs Shinx, though Magneton didn't make as much of an effort to avoid the attack, rather it just turned its body so that only one of its three heads took the hit. This caused Magneton to step back in pain a little, but it was far from finished.

Magneton then charged up an attack, or rather three attacks in one. One head charged up an elemental ball of fire, one an elemental ball of ice, and the final a ball of electricity. Magneton had been using Tri-Attack, a move that, while it is a Normal-type move, strikes the opponent with three different types of power in the single attack. This attack would strike you as a triangle shape, and in this shape the powers of Fire, Ice, and Electric would strike you, each ball causing a chance at its own respective element of hax, burn, freeze, or paralysis. Tri-Attack hit Gastrodon, but luckily for it, even though it was in pain, no status seemed to effect it, and so Gastrodon would be able to keep going.

Magneton cringed its three eyes as it took the mud head on. The metallic Pokémon took a big hit, as it had a quadruple weakness to Ground-Type moves. The barrage of mud ball pushed Magneton back sparking out electricity behind it like blood splatter. It shook off as much as it could and then prepared its response.

Each one of its magnets started to glow a different color. Its lower right head shone an orange-red color and produced an electric spark that seemed to burn like fire. Its lower left head shone a white-blue color and produced a spark that seemed ridged and icy. Finally, its top head, sort of the head brain of the Pokémon, produced actually streams of electricity. The three different colored formed orbs of their respective elements in front of their eyes. Then energy jumped from each ball to the one next to it, creating a triangular shape. The center of the outline filled up with a white light.

Mangeton released the move directly towards Gastrodon. It smacked right into his face, causing him to wince a bit, but the energy quickly dispersed after landing the attack. Gastrodon shook it off, and he seemed relatively fine, to Magneton’s surprise.

The Move was Tri-Attack, which used the power of electricity, fire, and ice. The move could cause an enemy to be burned, frozen or paralyzed. Even though you would think that Gastrodon would resist part of the move due to its typing, the move was actually a Normal-type move. If the energy required to combine the three different elements didn’t merge them safely into a Normal type attack, the fire and ice would have countered each other, leaving water and electricity to strike, which wouldn’t affect Gastrodon anyways.

The battle had started out strong, but I used Gastrodon’s strongest Ground-Type move already. Mangeton would be able to sense it and find a way to counter it easily, so I had to switch moves for now.

I knew I shouldn’t use Muddy Water like before; there was just not enough room, but that’s not why I had brought Gastrodon, but instead I brought him for his Ground-type moves. Though, he hadn’t learned many Ground-type moves to make things interesting. He was still a rather new addition to my team. I found him while one a mysterious chain of islands. He was the leader of the group of Shellos, West side. I had found a friend on the island who wanted me to help him catch a Tropius, a quadrupedal Pokémon that looked like a green and brown brontosaurus, or I guess Apatosaurus; I couldn’t tell the distinction for they both were instinct. Anyways, I was helping the kid by helping him catch a Shellos, since he didn’t have any other Pokémon and tried to catch Tropius in various traps. The Kingst and another Shellos got into a fight with me and my Punpun.

Eventually the kid was able to befriend Tropius and helped me finish off Kingst, which I caught and kept for myself, since the kid had already befriended the Tropius. It was sad seeing him leave his group, but he handed the leadership to the Shellos that was with him.

As I remembered the battle between us, I recalled a combo move that he did.

“Kingst, use Mud Sport to create a layer of mud around you and then use Mud-Slap!”

Gastrodon nodded as he remembered the combo he had used on me so long ago.

While it was a much weaker move, the attack, Mud-Slap, made up for it by lowering the opponent’s accuracy. It was the only other offensive Ground-type move Gastrodon had, but it was enough for now.

Since we were inside, there wasn’t much mud for Gastrodon to work with. By using Mud Sport, Gastrodon would create its own Mud out of the dirt and water inside of himself. Gastrodon would raise his head, causing his body to glow red-orange. It would then expel waves of mud from its shell covering his body in a coating of mud.

While it was usually used in order to lower the effectiveness of Electric-typed moves, Gastrodon’s Ground-type nullified that worry. No, I needed Gastrodon to produce more mud for his next attack. Mud Bomb didn’t leave much Mud on the ground this time, and since we were inside, there wasn’t a lot to slap around. But now, Gastrodon was covered in the stuff.

After he’d covered himself in mud, he’d let the mud slide to his pink appendages and then throw the mud towards Magenton’s face like baseballs. Mangeton had three eyes so I wasn’t sure if he would be able to hit all three, but one would be enough, especial because Magneton would be able to get a few hits in while Gastrdon spent his time gathering Mud and preparing to use Mud-Slap.

Jesse needed to carefully think his next move out. There was no way Mud Bomb would exactly work again, at least not right away, because Magneton was just with it, so now Jesse would need to think of something else to do. But what could he do exactly? Just because Magneton was technically weak vs Gastrodon, it didn't mean Magneton would just be an easy foe to defeat. Of course one had to also think at the same time, what would Magneton do? It's Electric-type moves were useless, and it's Steel-type moves were minimal at best. It already used Tri-Attack, so now Gastrodon would be able to deal with that. Either way you looked at it, things were bound to get interesting.

“Kingst, use Mud Sport to create a layer of mud around you and then use Mud-Slap!” Jesse commanded Gastrodon. This was a pretty interesting combo to do. First Gastrodon would be using Mud Sport to create some mud, and then it would take that mud and use Mud-Slap. This sounded like a relatively simple, yet effective combo. Mud-Slap needed mud to work, but being indoors there was no such luxury available, so Gastrodon would produce its own mud with Mud Sport. Mud Sport's true use is to be used to weaken the power of Electric-type moves, though seeing as how many Pokemon, such as Gastrodon, that can use this attack are Ground-type, they are already immune to Electric-type attacks anyway. The user of Mud Sport would generally use the attack in a field, by digging up some dirt. Though in this case Gastrodon would need to create the move using its own body.

Gastrodon took in some air; in order to use Mud Sport, Gastrodon would need to use its Ground-typing to mix with the water inside of its body, and it would then produce the mud, and use it to surround its body with a thick layer of mud. Now that Gastrodon did this, it took the mud, and flung it off of its body at Magneton, because there wasn't mud on the ground for Gastrodon to kick. Even if Magneton had a quadruple weakness to Ground, Mud-Slap was still a pretty weak attack, and Magneton had three heads, and six eyes to work with, so it was a crafty one. Magneton used its body to once again turn, though this time it was able to avoid some of the attack. With Magneton having six eyes it was able to keep its sight on Gastrodon at all times, so Jesse would need to find a way around this.

Now it was Magneton's turn to attack. Magenton formed some magnets in midair, using the power of its Steel-typing. This was a unique move it was working on using, because it was a move that didn't rely on chance to hit, but rather it would focus on the opponents energy, and follow them around until it hit. These magnets were also deadly, not just for this reason, but because they would explode on contact. Even if Gastrodon was at an advantage vs Steel-types, Magnet Bomb would still prove to be trouble. Magneton unleashed the move on Gastrodon, but Gastrodon was a lucky one, some of the mud it created was still on its body, and this ate up some of the explosions, but Gastrodon did still feel some of them, this was clear by the way it stepped back in pain.

Gastrodon, and Magneton were both giving it their all, but neither side was ready to give up just yet.

IC: Gastrodon inhaled, chest expanding even to a greater degree than when he used Mud Bomb. Gastrodon began to shake a bit as he mixed around the water and dirt within himself, an amount mush greater than before.

To my surprise, Magneton was patiently waiting, probably trying to figure out its next plan of attack.

Gastrodon exhaled a geyser of mud that rained all over himself, coating his pink and brown body. He then started to use his short tentacle-like appendages to fling Mud towards Mangeton.

Magneton had been focusing on this and started to twist and turn to avoid some of the attack. Some of the mud had hit his magnets and screws, but Magneton managed to keep its eyes clean.

Magneton’s eyes turned to Gastrodon, releasing a vibe of smugness. Its three magnets started to glow silver, and a shining gray energy was released into three large horseshoe magnets. Magneton turned to fling each one towards my Gastrodon. At first, I thought that its aim was off as the energy magnets veered off to the sides of Gastrodon, but then they curved towards Gastrodon.

They exploded as they hit, causing dirt and smoke to fly off. However, when the smoke had cleared, Gastrodon seemed not to have taken too much damage. His muddy exterior took the most of the attack, as I saw parts of the mud coat crack off, hardened by the heat of the Manget Bomb attack.

I looked at Gastrodon, and he was looking a bit tired. Not physically, no, he was in great shape. But this is his second battle, and I didn’t give him any Potions to help him out, since he didn’t take too much damage. Hopefully this battle will end before he takes too much damage, but then I could always let him use Recover. But no, that wouldn’t help him mentally that much. If it came to it, I’d switch him out for another Pokémon. He knows his limits, but the battle was far from over, for both Gastrodon and me.

Now that I had exhausted all of Gastrodon’s Ground-type moves, it was time to do something unexpected.

“Kingst, use Water Pulse!”

While Magneton’s combination of Electric-type and Steel-types makes it resistant to most types of attacks, unaffected by Poison-type moves, and weak to Fighting-, Ground- and Fire-type moves, it didn’t prevent or enhance the normal amount of damage from Water-type attacks. Luckily for me, as I Gastrodon has a few up his shell.

Now, Water Pulse could be used in two main ways. One, a Pokémon’s eyes would glow blue and then their body would release a large water tornado, which would then be compacted into a huge wave that would wash towards the opponent. This would be impractical and probably have Gary hounding me like he did when I used Muddy Water.

No, Gastrodon would use the other, less environmental destructive, version, which was good for the plant’s sake. Gastrodon would open its mouth, but instead of inhaling, it would collect a swirling blue orb of energy that would pulsate and grow to about the size of a bocce ball. Gastrodon would then release the ball towards Magneton.

When the energy ball collided, it would expand and surround the opponent in a large orb of water. The water would then violently swirl around Magneton from all sides, attempting to make it dizzy and then finally causing the water to explode around Magneton.

If I was lucky, Magneton would be slightly confused, and if not, at least I would have done some damage. And hopefully, the sliver of mud left on Gastrodon’s body would soften a part of the next attack Magneton was about to use.

So what was to come next, I had to wonder. Gastrodon had used the Ground-type moves it knew, but it was still pretty early in the battle, so duplicating moves already wouldn't have been the best of ideas. At the same time though Jesse's Gastrodon didn't have the widest movepool, and it would have still needed to do more damage to Magneton before it could have been captured. But then again there also wasn't a whole lot Magneton could do either. So this next exchange of moves would be interesting to say the least.

“Kingst, use Water Pulse!” Jesse told Gastrodon. Water Pulse wasn't a bad choice to use here; while the Steel-type provides many different resistances, Water wasn't one of them, so Water Pulse would hit Magneton at full power, and along with STAB from Gastrodon it was sure to pack a punch. Gastrodon started to form a liquid blue ball of energy from its mouth, if you looked closely you could actually see some water swilling around in it. Gastrodon took aim on Magneton, and fired the ball of energy at it. The ball collided with Magneton, and upon contact it started to expand. Now that the ball expanded, it released a surge of water all around Magneton. It turned into a wall of water, sort of resembling a tornado, only with water. Magneton was trapped in the middle, and was spun around at an incredibly speed to make the Pokemon dizzy, and possibly confusing it as Water Pulse was capable of confusing a Pokemon.

Magneton was released from the grasp of Water Pulse, and while it did in fact look dizzy, it didn't look confused, it just needed a few moments to collect its wits was all. Magneton now prepared to strike back. Similar to Gastrodon, Magneton started to create its own ball of energy. It was silver in color, and it looked like a slow moving ball. All three heads were working together to make the attack, this made the attack be charged up three times as fast, and would give Gastrodon a lot less time to react. What Magneton was using was an unusual attack; it was Gyro Ball. Gyro Ball did have its own power, but the power of the move was modified based on the speed of the Pokemon using it, against the speed of the Pokemon being hit with it. Either way though it was still a Steel-type attack, so it wouldn't deal too much damage to Gastrodon.

Magneton fired the attack at Gastrodon, but luckily for Gastrodon, Magneton was still somewhat dizzy from the Water Pulse, and so its vision was slightly impaired. What this meant was while Magneton thought it had a perfect shot in on Gastrodon, it was actually only seeing about half of the Pokemon, and so Gyro Ball only hit against Gastrodon's left side. This still caused Gastrodon to feel some pain, but had Magneton got a good shot in on Gastrodon, it would have been in a lot more pain.

Both Pokemon were pulling everything they could out of their bag of tricks, but Jesse would need to be careful. When Pokemon get desperate they do drastic things, and Magneton was more than capable of learning Explosion, so if Magneton thought the situation was too hard to pull through, it could very well have exhausted itself with an Explosion.

OCC: @Ebail That’s not how Gyro ball works in the anime/fits the description, so I hope you don’t mind if I describe it that way. Curiously, when it’s used in the manga, it fires a beam of energy. Weird.

IC: Gastrodon gathered up his swirling ball of rushing water, which was held together by a mysterious see-through-blue energy. He whipped his head back and then forward, releasing the Water Pulse towards Magneton.

Magneton didn’t seem to fight it and probably thought that the Water-type ranged attack wouldn’t do too much damage to it. Magneton was struck right in the upper head, but the ball crashed and expanded like a wave to surround all three heads before building into a closed tornado. Magneton was spinning round and round, trapped. Magenton’s three eyes starting to become swirls of dizziness (I thought that only happened in the cartoons).

The violent water current ball exploded throwing water all over the hallway. Magneton was still spinning, but starting to slow. It finally did and took about a second or two to get composed. It wasn’t confused, but the three tiny dot-like pupils were still awkwardly moving around it its eyes. Magneton tried to shake it off, but it couldn’t waste any more time on itself.

Magneton’s three magnets began to glow a bluish-silver color. They then began to release a large blue light. Magneton tilted a bit and started spinning, but in the opposite way that Gastordon’s Water Pulse moved it, counter-clockwise instead of clockwise. As it spun the lights were moving so fast the it created three large rings, as it was tilted, otherwise it would be one large ring and one dot twirling around itself.

Magenton was using Gyro Ball. The user of the move tries to tackle the target with a high-speed spin. However, the slower the Pokémon, the more time the move has to build up some power. Magneton wasn’t particularly slow, but the move would still be powerful. That is, if it was used on a Pokémon that wasn’t resistant to the attack, but I shouldn’t get cocky.

While still spinning in its ball, Magneton curved through the air towards Gastrodon. Gastrodon had just finished a move, so he didn’t have time to jump or dodge out of the way. Magneton came closer and closer, but I noticed that it was wobbling. The spinning of the last attack must have made Magneton just dizzy enough to cause it some sight issues, but not enough to confuse it. Mangeton seemed to be aiming for Gastrodon’s head, which would have caused my Gastrodon major headache. But instead, the rotating Steel-type Pokémon surrounded by three rings hit instead into the ground and Gastrodon’s side.

The attack was dispersed between he two, and while Gastrodon was knocked back, it seemed like he took a small amount of damage compared to the floor, which was now littered with broken tile pieces and pieces of cement.

Magneton boomeranged back to its previous position and stopped spinning. Its eyes started to adjust, and soon Magneton was sober again. It looked mad; It was understandable, as not only its attacks being resisted by a singular Pokémon that it probably hadn’t see in the Abandoned Power Plant, it’s was starting to feel the pain of all of Gastrodon’s attacks. If I were it, I must just explode. Oh wait, that’s right. Magneton’s could also explode, even though it seems like it’s only been able to in the past couple of years.

If only there was a way to calm it down. I didn’t want to have to use another Calming Fragrance, as those were mad expensive to me. Maybe I can try to win the lottery or something. But what are the chances of that. Maybe it would be better just to go back to battling, as those seem to pay well. I don’t want to subject my Pokémon to that just to get money though… Argh… Life without a job sucks.

What kind of qualifications do I have anyways? Being a trainer, you don’t have and school experiences. Sure you could be good with strategizing and making Pokémon pretty, but that doesn’t get you the kind of jobs that you could use to support yourself. Maybe I could become a Pokémon translator and work with Kipper’s father, Mr. Von Wan. He doesn’t understand Pokémon like I do, but instead had to work at it. He became very successful at it, making an entire book series, going around on tours. He makes a legitimate living.

I got to get my head back into the battle. Magneton was still looking tough, though, despite the small cracks alongside its metal body. Gastrodon was looking fine too, and I still had his Recover, but that might make Magneton madder. Didn’t want to knock it out, but I didn’t want to insult it either.

“Kingst, go in for a Body Slam,” I commanded my Gastrodon.

Gastrodon would rush towards Magneton, jump high enough so that Magneton was below Gastrodon, and then impact Magneton with all of his weight. It was a simple attack, but it was strong, but because Magneton was part Steel-type, it wouldn’t do too much. Hopefully, Magneton wouldn’t use explosion. And using a close-up attack might startle it for just a second, since so far, Gastrodon has just been commanded to use ranged attacks.

If everything goes well, I can go into the end game of this little battle, and attempt to capture this Magnetic Pokémon. It is probably the last Pokémon I would try to catch today, but who knows. If I did captured Magneton, I would come from the Park with three strong Pokémon. It was interesting too, as those choices would be Magneton, Klang, and Porygon2. All three were not basic and not fully-evolved. Oh well, let’s see have Gastrodon’s Body Slam goes before I get too ahead of myself.

 

Both sides were starting to get pretty tired now, and both had been pulling everything that they could out of their moves. Still neither side was giving in, not yet anyway. Though I did wonder how this would turn out, I mean unlike Jesse's other battles, Gastrodon already started out slightly damaged, and so now this was one of his closer battles for that reason. On the flip side of things though, something like seventy-five percent of Magneton's moves were either useless, or ineffective to use against Gastrodon. This certainly did make the battle seem more interesting, to say the least anyway.

“Kingst, go in for a Body Slam,” Jesse commanded Gastrodon. This was a different tactic to see from Jesse in this battle, so far he had only been using moves that could be used from a distance on Magneton, but now he wanted Gastrodon to use a close range move, one that wasn't even all that effective against Magneton. Still, repeating moves wasn't usually the best of ideas, not until a Pokemon was too tired to counter, plus using a Ground-type move at this point could be bad due to Magneton's weakness, and Gastrodon only had so many moves it could use anyway. But still Body Slam wasn't the worst choice perhaps, it was still a pretty powerful move, and it would almost certainly take the air out of Magneton, which would bring it that much closer to a capture. The move even had a chance to cause paralysis, take in that factor, and it doesn't seem like a bad move to use at all.

Gastrodon moved a little bit towards Magneton, and then it launched itself in the air at it. Gastrodon wasn't anywhere near as heavy as a Pokemon like Snorlax, but still the impact from Body Slam should still have been enough to make Magneton crash into the ground. Magneton, however, wasn't just standing still to do nothing. As Gastrodon got just above Magneton to crash onto it, Magneton lowered itself to the ground, and it launched itself into the air by using its magnets. Magneton also was using a close range attack, though the one it was using seemed like it would cause a bigger impact. Gastrodon's body collided, with Magneton's top head.

The two Pokemon's attacks were colliding at the same time, so neither side was getting a clear advantage. Gastrodon jumped back, and it was now a little short on breath, but at a glance you could see it still had a good deal of fight left in it. Magneton though, well after it used its attack, it seemed to show some signs of additional pain. After seeing this there was no doubt in my mind that Magneton had used Double-Edge, a very powerful Normal-type move, but a costly one that causes the Pokemon who uses it to suffer some recoil damage. Also due to Gastrodon using Body Slam when Magneton attacked, Gastrodon's move acted like a shield in addition to causing damage, so it took a lot less damage than it could have. Magneton was now having a hard time getting back into the fight, but who knew, it could have maybe just been playing possum, and wanted Jesse to let his guard down so it could strike, or maybe it really was just about at its breaking point, and almost captureable.

Gastrodon propelled himself along the tiled floor of the Abandoned Power Plant. When he was building up enough momentum, Gastrodon yelled out to help concentrate his energy. His slimy pink legs pushed off the ground with enough force to launch himself high into the air.

Gastrodon’s opponent, Magneton, lowered itself to the ground, making the distance between the two much larger than earlier anticipated. Magneton’s magnets, tipped blue and red, tilted up towards Gastrodon and started to gather up some electrical energy. Magneton’s magnets then used this magnetic propulsion to zoom up towards Gastrodon.

The two Pokémon met in the direct center of the brightly overhead lit hallway, a large smacking sound ringing out from the large masses of the Water- and Ground-type shelled sea slug and of the Electric- and Steel-type three-eyed metal balls. A small shockwave burst out from two large bodies. Gastrodon was flung back about a few feet onto its side. My Pokémon got back up relatively fast, but his body was covered in bruises, and Gastrodon was heaving.

Magneton was pushed back not as far, but it was weakly keeping afloat above the ground. The top head looked the worse. The once shiny steel coating was now mud-ridden and bruised. Its eye was squinting, apparently it had an eye covering that I had never noticed. The other two head were almost as bad, but no matter, because Magneton was hurting as a whole entity.

Magneton had just used Double-Edge, a Normal-type close-ranged move, in response to Gastrodon’s Body Slam, which was just the same. The problem, though, was that Double-Edge also caused pain to Mangeton. It was feeling it now. It seemed like it couldn’t last much longer. If I wasn’t careful, it would self-destruct or become knocked out.

“Good job, Kingst,” I told my Gastrodon. He might have been a very Serious Pokémon, but I liked to encourage him nonetheless.

He deserved. My Gastrodon had contributed the most in my run so far. This Magneton was his second opponent, and unlike my other Pokémon, he hadn’t been healed. I didn’t think he would need it, but now I wasn’t sure. He looked so tired. I could always use Recover, but then I didn’t want to risk two moves on the chance that Magneton exploded. I needed to end this now, but I’m not sure if I should work Gastrodon too hard.

Maybe if I switched to Ally, my Chansey. She wasn’t strong, but she could sing. If I could just get her to use her Sing attack, Magneton would fall asleep, and it would so much easier to try to catch it. However, I’d have to worry about Chansey getting hit before she could start. And then I’d have to worry about what would happen if Mangeton didn’t fall asleep, as Sing wasn’t the most accurate of Pokémon Moves.

No, I had to stick with Gastrodon. He was working so hard, this victory is going to be both his and mine. Pride can be a powerful thing, and Gastrodon sure was powerful. He needs to stay that way.

One more hit. That’s all I needed. Think, Jesse, think. Mud Bomb would do a lot of damage, maybe too much damage. It would probably knock it out, and as everyone knows, Pokéballs don’t work on Knocked-Out Pokémon. Father says that it is because while the Pokémon is unconscious, it loses the energy needed for the Pokéball to convert the Pokémon into data.

The Pokéball is able to turn mass into energy and vice versa, but there is a sort of coding within Pokémon’s DNA that releases a force that protects it from being converted into energy while it is Knocked-out. I asked Father why then could Pokémon be captured when they’re asleep, natural or supernatural. Father responded saying that the DNA defense doesn’t activate unless the Pokémon is brought to the point of near death, but once the Pokéball registers its DNA, it reverses this code so that when a trainer’s Pokémon is Knocked-out, they can still return it to their Pokéball.

In all the years Father and Prose had worked at Silph Corporation, the company has yet to find a way around this. Pokémon genealogy is still too beyond our understanding. We do know a lot about Pokémon though, and can tell when they’re about to faint, like Magneton here.

Now this wasn’t the only reason that a Knocked-out Pokémon wouldn’t be caught. Sometimes the surrounding wildlife would come in and brush up against their fallen companion. When multiple Pokémon connected their bodies, it would confuse the capturing system of the Pokéball and cause it to malfunction. The Pokémon would then take the fainted one away before you could get another one ready.

Another thing that happened to me is that PETP, People for the Ethical Treatment of Pokémon, would step in and distract the trainer so they could treat the Pokémon in their mysterious facilities. It was odd, though. They were alright with using Pokémon and Pokémon battling, but once a wild Pokémon gets Knocked-Out, they’re all over you. They were like Ninjas, coming in and out from out of nowhere. It was depressing, but it happened. I wouldn’t be surprised it a few of them were wandering around here. I hope they heard what I said to Shinx and give me some slack.

I was told one other funny story that happened to a friend of mine. He was trying to capture an Electabuzz in Sinnoh when he ended up knocking it out with an Earthquake from his Golem. However, he had expected other Pokémon to appear, so he sent out his Alakazam and told it to use Reflect to prevent the Pokémon from coming close to Electabuzz. He pushed back like twenty Pokémon including some Oddish, Wooper, Sunkern and even one Scyther. Then the PETP came, but he had used Spikes and they started dropping like flies. His Butterfree then caught the PETP people in cocoons of its String Shot. When he was finally able to find time to throw the Pokéball at the still Knocked-out Electabuzz, there was a green flash of light and the legendary time-travelling Celbi appeared to take Electrabuzz away from the present time. Needless to say, my friend was really pissed.

So, yeah I can’t knock this Magenton out because there would be no way to capture it after that.

I had to use a move that wasn’t too weak, so Mad Slap was out. Maybe I should use Water Pulse again. Even if I had just used it a turn before, Magneton was rather tired, though, it could be faking it. If it was between risking knocking it out or doing less damage than it might, I would choose the lesser damage in a heartbeat when it came to capturing.

Alright, I had to attack and then make sure Magneton was calm enough to not explode.

“Kingst, Water Pulse, once more!” I shouted as I flung my finger towards Magneton.

Gastrodon would start building up the swirling ball of water once again. The ball would grow and glow blue until Gastrodon released it towards the Magnetic Pokémon. The orb would fly through the air, and once it impacted, spread around Magneton, trapping it in a whirlpool of power. Maybe it will be able to resist the ball’s forces this time, or maybe it would be too tired and just go with it. I don’t know. But whatever happened I needed to make sure it is calm enough to not Explode or Self-Destruct.

I took out a Super Ball, its green color all too familiar to me. I winded my hand back, lifting my leg, and using the full momentum of a pro Baseball player, chucked the Super Park Ball at Magneton. The ball would knock into Magneton’s head (I aimed for the top one) and then release the energy for capture. Hopefully Magneton would still be conscious, and then be sucked into the ball. Magneton would struggle against the coding programmed into the Pokéball. The code would try to edit the DNA coding of Magneton so that it would be registered to the ball. If it was successful, the ball would stop its shaking and Magneton would be mine. If not, the coding process would end, and depending on the situation, would short circuit, making the ball unusable, or hopefully, just restart to program.

It was all up to the damage from Gastrodon’s Water Pulse, a move that the tired Magneton had seen just the minute before, and my luck.

 

Jesse looked as if he wanted to wrap this battle up now, and it was pretty possible that he could. Just one more semi-powerful attack from Gastrodon should have been more than enough to secure a capture. Of course though, this was up to Magneton, if it wasn't ready to be captured it would still put up a fight, and do what it could to both escape the ball, and continue its battle with Gastrodon. Only time could tell the outcome of this one though.

“Kingst, Water Pulse, once more!” Jesse commanded Gastrodon. This move choice was probably a good idea, it wasn't as powerful as say Mud Bomb to the point where it would possibly knock Magneton out, but it was powerful enough to damage it a bit more. Just as it did before, Gastrodon formed a ball of energy filled with water, though this time Magneton knew what to expect, and it tried to do what it could to counter. As Gastrodon fired out its attack, Magneton shot out some gold, and silver colored stars that would explode on impact. Like with the Magnet Bomb it used earlier, this move would also hone in on the opposing Pokemon's energy, and hit them, it was Swift. Swift collided with Water Pulse, and it made the energy ball start to form into the full attack in midair. Some of Swift avoided the attack, and hit Gastrodon, though unfortunately for Magneton the blunt of Water Pulse still hit it.

Jesse wasted no time at all, he took an empty Super Ball, and threw it at Magneton, as Water Pulse was finishing up on it. The ball sucked Magneton in, and came down to the ground. Magneton put up a struggle while in the ball, too good of a struggle, it ended up breaking free of the Super Ball. Even though Magneton broke free, it was still pretty short on breath, and it probably wouldn't take Jesse a whole lot more than throwing another ball at Magneton.

Magneton straightened itself, as if to say, “I still have some fight in me.” Though, I would have heard if it actually said that. As Gastrodon started to charge up the twister of water contained tightly in a ball, Mangeton’s magnets started to shine yellow. It started to swing back and forth, but nothing else was happening.

Gastrodon sling-shoted the Water Pulse towards Mangeton, orb shaking in its path revealing Gastrodon’s weak state. Magneton’s movements finally produced a slew of large gold- and silver-colored stars towards Gastrodon. I knew the attack to be Swift, a move that started to become fairly popular in contest battles. Each star would deal a small amount of damage, but the problem was the massive quantities of stars.

The first wave of stars collided with Water Pulse, causing the ball to expand much too early. The good thing now, though, is that most of the stars were being halted as the small ball became a large wave; however, a good portion of the first bunch of stars crashed into Gastrodon, causing him to flinch at each mini-star bomb.

The wave of water still had some momentum, so when it started to spin around the stars, it crept closer to Magneton. Only the very edges of the attack hit Magneton and didn’t spin it, but Magneton was still cringing from the damage.

The smoke cleared from the explosions of water and stars, and Gastrodon was trying his hardest to stay up. However, Magneton was already sucked into a Superball; I threw it right after Water Pulse started to condense and lose power.

The ball shook once… twice… I crossed my fingers, but it was no use. The ball opened up, released a dirty white light, which signified a failed capture, and revealed Magneton angrily looking at me. I couldn’t believe that I had failed.

“Jesse, use another one! Magneton’s not going to be able to resist it in its condition,” said Gastrodon as he started to take larger breaths. He was right.

Magneton wasn’t looking angry; it was looking tired, half closed eyes staring back at me.

“Ok, one more time!” I yelled as I reached into my pack, pulled out another Super Ball and chucked it towards Magneton.

 

“Ok, one more time!" Jesse yelled as he pulled out, yet another Super Ball. There had been nothing wrong with the previous Super Ball, it had just been a bit away from Jesse, and if he had ran over to get it, Magneton would have had some time to recover itself, or strike Gastrodon once more. Either way Jesse had the extra Super Ball to spare for the time being, and so using it now, while Magneton was still trying to recollect itself was the best option.

Jesse threw the ball, and it once again struck Magneton, and sucked it in. With any luck, Magneton exhausted the rest of its strength escaping from the previous Super Ball, if this actually was the case then Magneton would easily be secure in the ball this time around. Then ball hit the ground, and it was still shaking, Magneton still seemed to have a bit of life left in it, though that didn't last for very long, and eventually the ball stopped.

"Well good job, Jesse. Now that's a fifth capture," I said as I went over, and picked up the newly caught Magneton's ball, as well as the Super Ball sitting on the ground. "Here you go," I said, as I tossed the Super Ball back to Jesse. There had been nothing wrong with it, so he could take it, and use it at a later time. "So, now that you have five captures, what would you like to do next?" I asked.

IC: Magneton was sucked into yet another Super Ball, those this time it didn't seem to resist, too tired from the long battle. The ball shook thrice and settled. I had caught the Magneton.

"Well good job, Jesse. Now that's a fifth capture," Gary said.

Gastrodon looked relieved and fell on his side, resting. I thanked him and returned him to his Pokeball. He'd be getting a good rest and a trip to the Pokemon Center when we got back.

Gary walked to the two Super Balls. He placed Magneton's into his pocked and then examined the Pokeball that had failed. He tossed it back to me. "Here you go," I said.

I looked at it, and as Gary saw, it was still functional. That was good, as I wanted to save as much as I could.

"So, now that you have five captures, what would you like to do next?" Gary asked.

I gazed out a nearby window that I could see through a door to an open room. The sun was setting. I had already gotten four powerful Pokemon to choose from as I was going to give Shinx back. It was time to leave the Abandoned Power Plant.

"I think I'd like to go home," I said as I stretched and yawned. It was a long day, and I could use me some supper.

Gary led me back through the maze like halls, and we reached the front door. I heard the sounds of some light growling. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a Clefairy. It was rather odd as I thought that they didn't reside here. I was son corrected as the Pokedoll was nudged out by a Shinx, the same one that I had seen on multiple occasions.

"Hey Gary, I'm not going to choose Shinx, but could I see her ball anyways?" I asked.

Gary saw the Shinx from before, and I think he understood. He reached into the left pocket and pulled out the Park Ball. I brought it over to Shinx.

"A deal is a deal," I said as I released the female Shinx.

She still looked pretty weak from the battle with Gastrodon, so I pulled out a ball and released my Chansey. I heard Luxio's growling this time as he walked out of the shadows.

"Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt you. Ally, can you please you Heal Pulse on this Shinx?"

My Chansey nodded. She placed her hands in front of her body and started using her Psychic-like powers to form a light pink ball of energy. Chansey then spread out her arms and released pink sparkling waves around the battle-worn Shinx. Shinx cringed, expecting the worse, but she soon found herself relaxed and stood up.

"There, now you can join your family again."

"But, wait you still have that ball. What if you come back and take her away later?" cried the young male Shinx, worrying about his sister.

I took the ball and placed it on the ground. I picked up my foot and then smashed the ball into pieces. A little dramatic, but I don't think the young Shinx would have understood if I just used the released function of the ball.

"Believe me now?" I asked.

Shinx just shook his head and started to nudge the Pokedoll towards me. I put my hand out and waved "no."

"It's yours to keep. It was nice meeting you all. And Luxio, make sure this little one gets all the training he'll need to face the other trainers coming trought."

Luxio just nodded, and the trio of lion-like Pokemon ran away into the dark, a bit less-mysterious corridors of the Power Plant.

I returned to Gary, and we kept going to the ranger station. Now I had to really choose which Pokemon I would keep. I had to register them with the offical Pokemon League as well, so I got to see a little bit more of their statistics as they were scanned in for the process.

When I was finally asked which Pokemon to choose, I said, "I would like to keep Hasty Klang, the Jolly Magneton, and the Calm Porygon2." And so I received regular Pokeballs that I could transfer my three new Pokemon into and turned to Gary. "Thank you for a great time. I wish you luck on the rest of your rangering."

I walked out to the docks and told the man where I would like to go. "Back to Kanto, please. I need to see an old friend."

And with that, I gazed one last time at the giant island known as the National Park. But deep inside, I knew that I wouldn't have to say goodbye to this place for too long. Kitsu and I had a date to keep.

 

"I think I'd like to go home," Jesse said to me. It was understandable, he had captured some pretty good Pokemon, and now he was happy with what he had. I was leading Jesse back to the front door, all that was going to be left to do now was select which three Pokemon he wanted, though I had a good idea, and he could be on his way. Though, as we got to the front door, he turned to me and said, "hey Gary, I'm not going to choose Shinx, but could I see her ball anyways?" I had a good idea that I knew what he wanted to do, so I agreed and handed him Shinx's Park Ball.

"A deal is a deal," Jesse said as he let Shinx come out from its ball. He then sent out his Chansey, and had it heal up the Shinx, who was still weak from its previous battle with Gastrodon. To let Shinx know it was truly free, Jesse destroyed the ball he had used to capture Shinx, meaning that Shinx had been set free. With that Shinx was free to return to the other Shinx, and Luxio, and any other Pokemon it wanted to.

We got back to the ranger station, and Jesse decided on the three Pokemon he wanted; he chose to take the Klang, the Magneton, and of course the Porygon2. Before he left he turned to me one more time, and said, "thank you for a great time. I wish you luck on the rest of your rangering." And with that Jesse took off, and headed back for home with his new Pokemon in hand.
