Sec couldn't seem to decide whether he wanted it or not. After a couple of minutes, he made up his mind.

"Let’s move on, I like the Unown but it’s just not what I’m here for," Sec said. The breeze from the entrance ruffled his hair and he added, "I just can’t wait to get out of this cave and breathe in that fresh air! That breeze feels fantastic!"

"Hell yeah," I replied fervently. I couldn't wait to get outside.

Sec had a PokeDoll ready to give to the Unown if it stopped us from leaving, but it didn't. It just watched us as we left.

We emerged from the cave into the dawn light. We were in one of the highest points in the canyon, and a trail along the cliff edge wound down to the very bottom of the canyon.

We began walking down, and I heard a little tinkling sound as we did so. I looked back, and the Unown was following us.

“Ah!” Sec sighed as the team stepped out of the cave. “Fresh air!”

Everybody rejoiced as the fresh breeze of the great outdoors whipped the cave lurking crew’s faces and fresh air flooded their lungs. Suddenly however, a light tinkling noise interrupted the groups rejoicing.

A small S-shaped Pokemon floated from the entrance of the cave and gently approached the group, its single eye blinking quickly as the bright sunlight shined down upon it.

“Really?” Sec muttered as the Unown followed the group from the cave. “I guess I’m going to need this after all.”

Sec looked down at the Pokedoll which sat in his hand and then back up at the Unown. He gently set the doll down on the ground in front of him and turned to his ranger, Chainy.

“This should content him for awhile, long enough for us to get down the mountain at least. What do you say we head down this path and see what we encounter along the way?”

Sec called Infernape back into his Pokeball, he didn’t need to exhaust himself with any more walking now that the group was in the light. Sec then proceeded to put out the torch which he had taken from the Clefairy village and set the old stick upon the ground. With just the two boys, trainer and ranger present and nobody else, the two began to trek down the mountain side path.

"Really?" Sec muttered. He sounded exasperated. Apparently he was hoping to save himself a Pokedoll, but he wasn't so lucky this time.

He placed the PokeDoll on the ground in front of the Unown, and it floated down and fell asleep in the dolls arms.

"What do you say we head down this path and see what we encounter along the way?” Sec asked me jovially.

"Sounds like a plan," I replied.

We kept walking down the path towards the canyon floor. The sun's rays were easily visible from our vantage point, but we were still in the shade, and some of the lower parts of Meteor Valley were still incredibly dark. It was like a study in different lighting levels.

I heard some fluttering wingbeats, and I followed the sound. Sitting in a nest barely two metres off the ground on the cliff edge was a baby Natu. The parents were nowhere to be found.

Normally, I wouldn't offer Pokemon like this, but what with the recent upheaval something could have happened to this baby's parents. Rarely would both parents leave their child unattended, and I couldn't see any Xatu around.

"Want to try and catch a Natu?" I asked Sec.

“The poor thing, it looks like its been abandoned!” Sec said as he looked up at the lonely Natu.

The small green bird sat quietly in its nest, it looked as if it were searching for its parents, but they were no where to be found. Sec pondered for a moment whether or not he should capture the psychic bird and eventually concluded that he wasn’t interested. Well, he was in fact interested, but not interested enough to use his last capture on the Pokemon. As neat as Xatu are, they’re not all that powerful and Sec was looking for more powerful Pokemon on this trip.

“Wanna try to catch a Natu?” Chainy asked.

“I’d rather not. It’s a neat Pokemon but its just not what I came here for,” Sec replied, “Although, I do feel bad about leaving it here all alone… If I had Rotom incapacitate it with Thunder Wave so that we could get ahold of it would you be able to take it to the Ranger Outpost to have it relocated to a new Xatu family?”

Sec looked up at the baby Natu once more and pulled Rotom’s Pokeball from his pocket just in case Chainy agreed to let Sec relocate the

Sec didn't like leaving the Natu behind either. He asked me if I could relocate it, and he pulled out a PokeBall just in case I said yes.

I sighed.

"Unfortunately, I can't," I said sadly. "I cannot interfere with the natural lives of Pokemon unless something really bad goes down, and as much as I hate it one little Natu being left alone doesn't rate as a Park emergency. Our only options are you attempt to catch it or we move on."

But then a thought came to me.

"Well, technically there's no rule against you carrying it around for a while," I said thoughtfully. Sec could choose to try and carry it around like he did the Ralts, and if we stumbled across the parents then he could leave it with them. But the choice was up to him.

Sec thought carefully about the situation for a second; he needed to be sure that taking the Natu with him was the right thing to do. If for some reason the Natu hadn’t been abandoned the group could run into a few nasty Xatu problems later on in the trip.

“Well, the parents may just be out collecting food; plus, it actually looks like it’s in good shape at the moment!” Sec told Chainy as he looked up at the bird again. “I think it’s best to leave it here, I wouldn’t want to steal a loved Pokemon from its parents while they’re out hunting, plus even if it isn’t abandoned it looks like it should be able to feed off of weak bugs on its own.

As much as the Natu probably would have made a good traveling companion, Sec just had to let it go. He had made valid points and there was no way he could just take every lonely or injured Pokemon that he saw. He had already helped one hurt Pokemon today and if he helped every single one that he encountered then there would be no Pokemon left in the entire park.

“Why don’t we move on?” Sec said as he began walking again, tucking Rotom’s Pokeball back into his pocket.

Sec decided not to take the Natu with him, because on the off-chance both parents were out hunting, he didn't want to move their baby. Besides, the Natu looked plump, and could probably hunt for itself.

“Why don’t we move on?” Sec asked as he walked away from the Natu. I followed silently. I knew Sec had made his choice for the right reasons, but I wasn't so sure the choice itself was correct. Under no circumstances would both Xatu leave their child alone at the same time. Lone baby Pokemon had low survival rates.

But I didn't say anything as we left the cheeping bird alone. As a Ranger I wasn't allowed to interfere. But something was going on in Meteor Valley that I didn't like. Something happened to the Ralts, the cave-in never should have happened and now a lost little Natu.

If we didn't find the reason for all this before our run was over, I'd go looking for it myself.

We continued down the ledge, nearing the bottom. The sun had continued to rise over our heads, and the rays began heating the back of my neck. I was glad for the warmth, but knew that inside of half an hour I'd be cursing it.

The sun was quickly rising over the party’s heads; its rays were beginning to beat harder and harder against the skin of each person as the traveled closer and closer to the bottom of the spiraling ledge that they had followed since the left the cave.

“Gah,” Sec exclaimed as he wiped a drop of sweat from his brow. “We need to get into the shade soon, this heat is getting ridiculous.”

The two walked further down the ledge, eventually reaching the bottom where the rocky walls seemed to be one hundred feet high. Sec couldn’t believe that just an hour or two ago they had been all the way at the top. Both Sec and Chainy quickly ran up to the covering shade of the cave walls and immediately sat down to take a break in the shade. Who would have thought that with the coolness of the caves that outside of them would be so hot?

“We might have to go back inside the caves,” Sec chuckled as he leaned back against the cliff wall, breathing heavily. “This heat is ridiculous.”

After the two had sat down long enough to cool down and rejuvenate Sec decided that it was time to move on.

“Let’s get moving; lead the way Mr. Ranger,” Sec said with a laugh.

The heat was getting oppressive. It was clear to me that this was going to be a hotter-than-average day in Meteor Valley.

Lucky me. I HATED the heat. With a passion.

We decided to take shelter in a small cave for a while. I didn't say anything, but I was extremely grateful. My lens was rubbing against ear, and I was getting a rash there.

"We might have to go back inside the caves," Sec said as he leaned against the wall of the cave. He was panting heavily.

"Yeah, this is just slightly nuts," I agreed.

"This heat is ridiculous," Sec confirmed.

I pulled out a drink bottle and guzzled half the contents. It was sweetened apple juice - not the healthiest drink, but perfect for a Ranger on the go who needed a quick energy boost. I thought about offering Sec some, but he was nowhere near as fat as me and he probably had some anyway.

"Let's get moving - lead the way Mr. Ranger," Sec laughed.

I grinned at him, but then a shadow fell across the cave exit. Something was coming in. I took a careful look - it wasn't easy. It was just a silhouette. The silhouette made an echoing cry, and I recognized it.

The Espeon wound its way sinuously into the cave, largely ignoring us. The purple cat took a brief look at us before winding its split tail around itself. Apparently it too was escaping the heat.

"Want to try catching it?" I asked Sec quietly.
