Individual RP: Pman

NBP#1

I was a bit nervous coming into my first assignment. I didn't really know why; all I had to do was protect the park and its visitors, keeping the park rules in mind.. it didn't seem difficult at all. Still, the nervousness kept creeping up on me.

I walked a short distance from the main outpost to the east. The sun glared harshly, and I couldn't wait to get inside, or even into the forest where the trees would provide ample shade... I adjusted my fedora so it covered my eyes in shade; at least then they wouldn't feel like they'd burn out of their sockets. Before long, I saw the Woods outpost. I was supposed to meet up with my trainer there. My notes said he was a guy named Ryan looking for a Scyther... and they ended there. They reminded me of the times I slept through history class, except I wasn't the one to take these notes...

I walked up to the outpost and opened the door. The daily activities of the outpost seemed to take up most of the place, and it was hard to see if anyone was there that didn't work there. I walked up to the receptionist for the outpost (thankful for the artificial, not-burning light) and asked her to place an announcement...

"Mr. Ryan Hoare, your assigned ranger is here to take you through your park run. If you are in the outpost, please report to the front desk so you may begin."

The announcement... sounded awfully formal to me. But I figured it should get the job done.

I left the docks section of the national park at a run; I’d somehow gotten out meeting place mixed up. I knew I was supposed to meet up with my ranger at 10 o’clock sharp but had somehow managed to get the meeting place mixed up; I’d gone to the docks instead of the ranger’s outpost in the woods. This was not a good start. I’d run probably three quarters of the way when I reached a long straight section of path with the outpost located at the end. Pulling a Pokéball with a small “A” etched on it out of my belt; I released Alonso, my Alakazam. Still hurtling at full pace with Alonso now trailing me, I called out, “Alonso, teleport me to that building.”

A cool Blue aura began to surround me as I backed off the pace and placed a hand on Alonso’s head. With a flash, I disappeared from where I’d been standing and appeared outside the ranger’s outpost, Alonso using a supreme effort of will to move me along with him.

I reached down into my pack and pulled out a red water bottle, before squeezing a stream of water into my mouth. I then glanced down at my blue watch and realised that I was exactly on time. I gave thanks to Alonso before giving him an apple from my pack. For some reason, Alonso had always liked apples.

I walked into the main room of the outpost to here the public address system announce, "Mr. Ryan Hoare, your assigned ranger is here to take you through your park run. If you are in the outpost, please report to the front desk so you may begin."

I walked calmly to the front desk, wondering what my ranger would look like, personally I was hoping for an attractive young female, maybe eighteen or nineteen. The problem was, i couldn’t see anything of the like in the vicinity. It looked like my ranger was going to be male.

 

NBP#2

I took a good look at the approaching trainer. The first thing I noticed was a small bit of psychic residue, though I wouldn't have been able to tell without having been Teleported many times myself. It wasn't any of my business how the trainers get here, as long as it didn't damage the park.. The second ting I noticed, however, was a tinge of disappointment in his eyes. Perhaps he wanted a more experienced ranger.. or something else..

"I'm Siless, and I will be your ranger for today." I gestured to the door behind the front desk. "That's the main entrance to the Woods. The path splits early on, with the left fork going to a small pond clearing and the right one heading into overgrowth. Once you're ready, we can head out." I wanted to give the trainer a chance to make sure everything was in order or to ask questions. I had just jumped right into my first run, though I wasn't sure that was for everyone, so I wanted to make sure that people could go through at the pace they wanted.

I looked briefly at Siless, my first thought was that he looked young; he couldn’t have been working at the park long. That in itself wasn’t much of an issue, as long as he knew what he was doing and I wasn’t going to end up dead. I was going to be putting my trust in this boy for the next few days.

I hoped we’d get along well.

Siless asked my where in the woods I wanted to go, there was a pond area, sounded good if I wanted water types or maybe Pokémon going down to the pond to drink. There was also an overgrown section, that sounded more promising for finding my desired Scyther but it also sounded like I was more likely to scare the Pokémon away down there.

I therefore asked him, “Where am I more likely to encounter a Scyther, to me the overgrown section sounds more promising but you’re the expert, I hope. The sole reason I’m here is because I lead a gym in my spare time and a Scyther would make my gym ten times as useful.

“I have to ask, How long have you been working in the park out of curiosity, given your age, it can’t have been long?”

"I honestly haven't seen many Scyther in the area, though from what I've read they prefer clearings. I believe there's a decent sized one beyond the undergrowth, which sounds more like their habitat, but they could also show up at the pond."

Ryan asked me about my experience. It kinda caught me off-guard... I supposed I made my general inexperience at rangering a bit obvious...

"Well this is my first run as a ranger. They had me study for a few days at the main office and otherwise help out, though, and I ran through a few times as a trainer, so I know my way around."

Ryan seemed intent on getting a Scyther. I hadn't run into one I was able to capture at the park however. "There's no guarantee we find a Scyther today. I could try tracking one down once we get to a clearing though. The most I could suggest otherwise is getting a voice disk and a Poképlayer for your next run through; they help a lot with finding specific Pokémon."

I waited for Ryan to make a decision on which way to go; I figured that I should be able to spot some tracks from either clearing. I wondered if there was any other Pokémon Ryan came for, but all that was listed on his "To Search For" list was Scyther.

Siless thought that the best place to search for a Scyther was the clearing beyond the overgrowth so that was obviously where I was going to choose to go. I thought for a bit before saying, “Siless, the clearing beyond the overgrowth it is then”

Whilst the Scyther was my main reason for trying out the park, I wasn’t worried if I didn’t get it this time. My first run through was going to be more about learning how they ran battling in here and exactly what I could do. I had no idea of what limits were imposed upon me and this run through was the place to find out.

I was definitely going to bring in a poképlayer next time but this time, I’d spent all of my money on getting set up and actually entering the park but I wasn’t going to tell Siless this. Instead, when he told me about poképlayers, I replied, “Well, I wasn’t sure if it would be worth it, maybe I’ll give it a shot next time. I hear that they improve your chances of encountering the correct Pokémon to something like 10%. Is that 10% per encounter or 10% for my entire trip?”

I really hoped it was the former, that could save me a lot of money, and some pokédolls might even guarantee an encounter with it.

With that comment, I turned and headed for the door of the rangers outpost, Siless would guide me well, I was sure.

 

NBP#3

Ryan asked me about the Pokeplayer. I hadn't used it myself, though other Rangers told me plenty about it.

"Each disk ends up drawing out the Pokémon recorded on it about 10% of the time when it's used, but it's used separately each encounter. And each disk can only be used five times before it breaks. You could theoretically use three disks of the same Pokémon to be almost certain you get that Pokémon at some point, though, if you really wanted it."

I pushed away some of the brush blocking the path, but a wad of fuzz distracted me. Well, more than a wad; a Slakoth was sitting right in the middle of the path. The furry sloth just sat there; it kinda looked like it was napping with its eyes half-open.. but then it moved a bit. It waved at Ryan in greeting, trying to get his attention but not expending too much energy.

"This Slakoth seems interested in you. Want to try and catch it?"

Mmm, a Slakoth, not the most useful of Pokémon but was sure I could find some people who could use one effectively.

Not only that, I was there to gain experience with battling in the national park, therefore, it probably wouldn’t hurt to take a risk and try and catch the Slakoth.

I turned to Siless and said, “Slakoth are lazy, let’s see how quick I can catch this.” I pulled a pokeball from my belt, emblazoned on the ball was a small, indiscreet bit of calligraphy that read “Maggie.”

I had a theory if I was going to catch this, I was working on the fact that Slakoth a notoriously lazy. The first step was to send out Maggie, my Magnezone. Therefore, I pushed the button on the front of the ball and held it out in front of me. A blue beam appeared and Maggie fizzled into existence.

“Hiya maggie, how about doing me a favour and using that Thunder Wave attack of yours on that Slakoth over there, a paralhyse pok’emon won’t pose that much of a threat to us.”

Maggie responded, sparks started jumping between the electro magnets that made up its feat, increasing slowly in noise, heat and voltage, suddenly a burst of electricity shot in the direction of the Slakoth.....

BP#1 (Vs. Slakoth Post 1)

OOC: You're fine with this. As long as you don't say the attack hits. Oh, and you can pick Slakoth's gender.

The weak bolt of electricity struck, and it didn't look like Slakoth felt a thing. Then again, that wasn't the point of the attack, and Slakoth started to struggle slightly. It was a bit irritated that it couldn't move, even though it wasn't going to in the first place...

I didn't think Slakoth would put up much of a fight to begin with, but now it has even less energy.. It started to drag itself into the brush; it didn't seem to want to escape the battle fully, just get a better position to defend itself without having to exert itself too much.

“Okay Maggie good job, let’s see if we can inflict some more status affects to this thing whilst we do some damage at the same time. That Thunder wave means it probably won’t put up much of a fight so it should be a simple catch from here on in.”

I quickly glanced at Siless in question of whether I was doing the right thing, he nodded back and I turned my attention back to catching the Slakoth.

“This time Maggie, we need tp use Tri-Attack, if that can inflict some more status stuff, we should win this easily.”

I allowed a smile to move onto my face as each of Maggie’s magnets began to spew forth a different type of element, the front giving out electricity, the left fire and the right Ice. I prayed for more status conditions as the attack pounded towards the Slakoth that was about to enter the thick undergrowth.

 

BP2 (Vs. Slakoth Post 2)

Slakoth was hit hard out of the brush; she rolled over into the middle of the road again. This time, she was stuck on her back. She struggled a bit trying to get upright, but a lingering bolt of electricity from Maggie's Thunder Wave shook through her, leaving her stunned. I figured that the Tri Attack strengthened the paralysis that already gripped the Slakoth. She seemed to stop trying to struggle against her Paralysis; it seemed like it was contemplating something...

Suddenly, the Slakoth opened its mouth wide, and a large, pink bubble started to form. It reached full size rather quickly, ending up slightly larger than the Slakoth that formed it. Satisfied with its size, Slakoth closed its eyes and dozed off...

"Careful.. Whatever Pokémon breaks that bubble is likely to become drowsy." I didn't know its effects on humans, but I was going to keep Ryan out of its range; it wouldn't be good if either of us fell asleep here... "And it seems to have used Rest.. or just dozed off. I can't really tell.."

Okay, fair enough then, I thought.

“Maggie, launch another Tri-attack, if that hits, this should be a really easy catch.”

Maggie once again began to charge up the three beams and I rummaged around in my pack. Down near the bottom I found what I was searching for, a green topped Pokeball, otherwise known as a park ball.

As the Tri attack thundered, sizzled and crackled its way toward the Slakoth, I tossed the ball at the Slakoth, Luck would have to be with me now...

 

NBP#4

Maggie didn't quite get a direct hit with its second Tri-Attack. It didn't really need it though; it was more than powerful enough to deal a good amount of damage to the Slakoth regardless of if it came into direct contact or not. The Slakoth never woke up duirng this, however. I guess it wanted its sleep.. Before I Knew it, a Park Ball from Ryan scooped up the Slakoth and sealed up; the Pokémon didn't even struggle.

The huge Yawn bubble popped from the force of the Tri-Attack.. It wasn't close enough to Maggie to put it directly to sleep, but its eyes started drooping.. "You may want to call back Maggie now.. Look like she got a good bit of that Yawn attack."

I was ready to go on at any time. I'd rather not watch Ryan's full team fall asleep on us though...

I was ecstatic so see that I’d caught the Slakoth, it would be a nice addition to my team and be especially useful in free for all situations. It was also the first pokémon I'd ever caught in the park. The first order of business however was to recall Maggie, I didn’t want her falling asleep on me.

I raised the hand holding her ball and the beam of red light shot towards her, hitting her square in the face. Maggie fizzled out of existence and the pokeball in my hand got slightly heavier.

Placing Maggies pokeball on my belt where it belonged, I began to walk across to where the Pokeball containing Slakoth had fallen.

The ball now had a satisfying weight to it which the first thing I noticed as I picked it up. Not having any room on my belt, I turned to Siless and asked, “Can you please mind this till we get out of the park?”

Without waiting for an answer, I began to reach my hand out towards him...

 

NBP#5

Ryan recalled his Magnezone to its Pokéball; the technique was known to remove drowsiness, as long as it hadn't fallen fully asleep. He then picked up the full Park Ball and handed it to me.

"Oh, right.. I'm supposed to hold onto these until you leave." I took the ball Ryan was offering. "It's supposed to be regulatory or something.. Keep the trainer from taking out more Pokémon than they're supposed to.

I started down the path we were taking before being interrupted by lazy Slakoth sleeping in the middle of the road. The clearing was just past the overgrowth. I started towards the edge of the treeline, trying to stay out of the direct sun, when I noticed something...

"These trees are damaged Ryan. A lot are sharp cuts, just like ones Scyther make, but some are blunt. I think they use this area for practice."

As we started to move towards the clearing, Siless noticed as that the bases of the trees at the start of the overgrown section of the path had plenty of cuts on them.

"These trees are damaged Ryan. A lot are sharp cuts, just like ones Scyther make, but some are blunt. I think they use this area for practice."

The thought of being in a location where Scyther may be found was exhilarating, I could barely contain my joy, and this without physically seeing a Scyther. My immediate urge was to lay down in the undergrowth and wait but I resisted.

Instead, I turned to Siless, looked him in the eye and asked, “Is it okay if we try and hide somewhere and wait for one to come out? Would it increase our chances of finding one or just be dangerous?”

That was one thing that really concerned me, I didn’t want to be surprised by a powerful pokemon that I couldn’t easily defeat. I knew that if that happened, I could easily be taking a trip out of the park in a hurry, possibly in the general direction of a hospital.

Still, if hiding and waiting was going to drastically increase my chances of catching that much adored Scyther, I was all for it.

"Hiding couldn't hurt, but I doubt it would help either. They'd see us either way, and we should be fine as long as we're not waving a stick at one or anything.."

Just as I spoke, a pair of Scyther approached us, though one immediately ran off. I tried to approach the other, but it screeched at me.. it didn't want me to move towards it. I tried moving towards the trees instead, and it screeched again.

"I think it wants us to stay here, Ryan. The other one is probably getting its leader. They tend to make prides, so their current leader would be the one to decide who gets to battle you."

The Scyther in the clearing nodded; I wasn't aware it could understand humans.. or how acute their hearing was. I knew it was better than any human's, but..

"You ready for this?"

A Scyther, I couldn’t believe my luck, yet at the same time my stupidity, I’d just received a text message from my father telling me he’s bought 3 poképlayer disks for Scyther and the machine itself. Still, Scyther were in such hot demand that I was fairly sure I could get rid of any extras I caught.

The lead Scyther in this pride had a slight notch out of one of its wings and looked fairly skilled in battle, I sincerely hoped one of the junior members of the pride would get to battle me. What was really amazing was the fact that we’d seen two and would probably see another one yet.

I resisted the urge to send forth a Pokémon till the leader of the Scyther arrived; I knew who I was going to send and how I was going to attempt to win. My first step would probably to paralyse the Scyther, from there, it would do less damage to me and be easier to capture.

The thought of capturing a Scyther send a tingle up my spine, this could be a very good day for me, then again, if the captured failed, it would be extremely disappointing.

I looked again at the Scyther, it just stared at me, I vaguely heard Siless say something but I wasn’t really paying much attention, my heart was pounding too fast and my brain was racing. The Scyther then nodded, almost in reply to what Siless had said.

I snapped back into reality as Siless ask me if I was ready for a battle I’d been looking forward to, and ready for, since before I entered the park.

I couldn’t speak, I was still too excited so I had to be satisfied with just nodding.

As I nodded, I unthinkingly stroked the Pokéball containing Maggie, the Pokémon inside would have the first shot at deciding my fate.

It wasn't long before Ryan was shaking from excitement; I could tell he really wanted that Scyther. Unfortunately, I had my doubts that it was what he was going to go up against as a red metallic figure entered the clearing surrounded by Scyther..

"Sci-zor", the metallic voice rang from the armored bug. It left the surrounding Scyther and approached Ryan. After a quick scan of the trainer intruding on its ground, it bowed to him before assuming a fighting stance.

"I think it wants to take you on itself, Ryan. You're probably not going to be able to get any of them if you refuse..." I didn't like having to deal with powerful Pokémon early in my first run, but Ryan may have a different opinion about this. Getting the Scizor though would save on Ryan's training time, I guess, and he could spend more time getting it adjusted to life as a trained Pokémon.

The familiar thin red beam began to come out of the Pokéball, a red sphere appeared at the end of the beam, just above the ground about five metres from the ball. The sphere slowly expanded and changed its shape. There, hovering just above the ground was Maggie, the best Magnezone a trainer can have.

Maggie turned to look at me as if saying, “Are you crazy, we could have this thing down in five minutes?”

Truth is, we probably could have, Scizor are notoriously weak to fire, both Blazer, my Blaziken, and Alonso, my Alakazam, had the fire moves to take this down.

Maggie however, knew its role by now. Even as I opened my mouth to give the command, “Paralyse that Scizor with your Thunder Wave attack.” A slight electric current was building up in my hand, which was stupidly resting on Maggie’s head. I jerked my hand back as sparks started to jump, firstly from the positive to negative poles of the individual magnets on Maggie’s body, then between the magnets themselves. My heart rate was beginning to quicken again at this point, if this could paralyse the Scizor, we’d have a much greater chance of winning, yet at the same time.

I didn’t want to hurt it badly too early in our battle, I wanted this drawn out, partly because I enjoy long battles, which is the reason I train steel types, but also because I wanted to get a feel for how the Scizor battled. This could be achieved through copious use of protect and substitute. I also had a plan to make sure I didn’t knock the Scizor out that would take time to enact.

I snapped back to the present as a beam electricity shot towards the Scizor, I just hoped it would paralyse...
