    Ranger Chainy

    OOC: Sorry this is a little bit late going up, stuff went down. So, I hope you enjoy your first run, and don't worry - we tend to go easy on first timers ^^ If you have any questions or want any tips, feel free to ask!

    ~~~~~
    I leaned back in my chair, bored out of my mind. I had a heavy workload - lots of paperwork, petitions to renew certain regulations, a proposal for a mass survey - but I just didn't feel like doing any of it. Most of the eyecandy was away today - Ivy and Elisa were off on runs, and half the secretaries were out sick. I sighed, and put my feet up on my desk. If I was going to be lazy, I might as well be comfortable doing so.
    As soon as I did, Madison walked in holding a manila folder. An expedition file. I rolled my eyes and pulled on my beanie, hiding my eyes from the light.
    "Anyone in here interested on going on a run?" she called out.
    "Sure, where's it going?" Joe asked.
    "Outer Heavens," she replied.
    My eyes shot open and I pulled my beanie off quickly. "Did you say Outer Heavens?" I asked Madison.
    "Yeah, the Trainer is looking for some rare Flying types," she said.
    I almost jumped out of my chair, and leaped across to grab the file, reaching it a second before Joe. I'd been waiting forever to go to Outer Heavens - I'd never been there before. It was located on top of a craggy mountain peak, with large logs and planks of wood sticking out of the ground and spanning gaps. Common belief was that the original owner of the Park had tried to establish a hotel or ski resort up there, but the remoteness and difficulty in getting there had put an end to the project, and it was easier to just leave the quarter-built settlement then to pull it down. As it turned out, the wildife didn't complain - many Flying types had decided to roost amongst the wooden poles and platforms.
    "I'll take this if you don't mind," I said to Joe, giving him a bright smile.
    His eyes narrowed and he muttered something under his breath, but he agreed to it. I resolved to pay him back somehow - maybe I'd give him a rare Pokemon or some time off or something. Maybe I could even wrangle a pay raise with the boss. Joe had been working in the Park for a long time now, it was time we started rewarding him for his hard work.
    Dual, we have a run, I thought as I returned to my desk to gather up my stuff. Dual was my Gallade, and he was commonly seen as my partner Pokemon. He was certainly the one I relied on the most, but I had a funny feeling he wouldn't be too pleased with the location of this expedition.
    <Good, I've been cooped up here too long,> he replied. <I'll meet you out front of the offices.>
    What's the matter, striking out with Sela? I needled him.
    His stony silence was answer enough. Sela was the Gardevoir of another Ranger, Siless. Dual made passes at every Gardevoir he met, because there wasn't many different Pokemon he could breed with, and as he explained to me, Gardevoir were the only ones that were even remotely attractive.
    I grabbed my cylindrical Ranger pack - it was always ready - and I pulled out a draw of my desk that contained my pistol in its holster. I slung it across my chest, underneath my arm, and secured my pack in the small of my lower back before waving goodbye to Madison. As I pushed my way out of the door, a slight breeze ruffled my hair. Excellent, today would be a wonderful day.
    Dual was waiting for me. <So, where are we off to?> he asked.
    Brace yourself, I cautioned him. Outer Heavens.
    Dual smacked his face with the palm of his hand. <Really?> he asked plaintively. As a Fighting type, he hated Flying Pokemon. The only one he was remotely comfortable with was my Staraptor Broadblade, and Ivy's Crobat, to a lesser extent.
    Come on buddy, chin up, I cajoled him. You probably won't be needed this run - I'll hitch a ride on Broadblade, and if I need any heavy lifting Specialle can probably do it.
    Dual rolled his eyes, but returned himself into his PokeBall voluntarily. The fact that he did so spoke volumes about how unhappy he was - he usually didn't like being in his ball. I picked a different one off of my belt and dropped it to the ground. A bright white light flared all around me, and when the blast of brightness faded Broadblade was standing in front of me. He screeched a greeting to me as I scratched his neck below his beak.
    "Hey buddy, up for a bit of a fly?" I asked him.
    He nodded and screeched again. I climbed up onto his back, and he launched us both into the air with a powerful flap of his wings. It would be about ten minutes to the gate to Outer Heavens - hopefully we'd get there before the Trainer, but I wasn't sure.
    OOC: It's all right. This post might be inadequate so... xD
    ~~~~

    The breeze is cool here. It kind of reminds me of Johto; my hometown. Of course nowadays, a lot of things did. I might be becoming homesick, but then again, the thrill of capturing new Pokémon--especially Dark or Flying-types--keeps me straight on the road in my journey. Why Dark and Flying types in particular, you ask? Well, I inherited my fondness of Dark-types from my family; my parents are known Dark-type trainers back at Johto. As for flying types, well, let’s just say a certain Togekiss I captured helped me become a better trainer, and I’ve fallen in love with Flying-types ever since.

    That Togekiss which I pertain to is none other than the Pokémon I’m riding now. I’ve named her Melisand, and she’s one of my best Pokémon. We circled in the air for some time now; perhaps it’s because I was very eager to come that I have arrived before my Ranger did. I grabbed on to the Togekiss’ pure white down, and told the Jubilee Pokémon to rest her wings and to land us on the ground. She obeyed without question, and then descended gently to the earth. I got off Melisand, and it was only then that I have had the time to really appreciate what was surrounding me. With the mountain’s pillar like structures and panoramic view, I could do nothing more but be awed by the sight. A gust of wind then came from a northern distance, and as I looked towards that direction, I saw a figure of what I thought were a Staraptor and a man riding it.

    “I sure hope that’s my Ranger, Melisand,” I said to the Togekiss who lied down on her wings roosting. “I’ve never been this excited to catch a new Pokémon.”

    “Toge-toge,” the Pokémon replied in agreement.

    Soon after, the figure neared where Melisand and I was. The light blanket of mist cleared when the figure-which was indeed a Staraptor-swooped down and landed right in front of us. And then I saw the man riding the gray bird Pokémon. He was in a red uniform that was familiar to me, and it was then that I immediately deduced he was indeed, my ranger. I noticed something bright on his vest. It was a piece of metal, perhaps it was a badge of some sort, with the words “ELITE RANGER CHAINY” inscribed on it. Words failed me. The thought that an Elite Ranger would take me through my first time inside the Park was awesome. He then extended to me a gesture, as if he was trying to introduce himself.

    Ranger Chainy

    OOC: That's a great first post ^^ I remember when people struggled to write 1.5k >_>

    ~~~~~
    As we got closer to the gate, I saw a fairly tall young man standing around next to a Togekiss. I muttered underneath my breath, annoyed, that the Trainer had managed to get here before me, but they usually did, so I didn't really mind. I was happy to see that his flying Pokemon of choice was a Togekiss - Dual got along fairly well with Flying Pokemon as long as he felt he stood a fair chance against them, and he could keep up with Togekiss speed-wise as well as power-wise. I probably wouldn't end up using him in this run, but it was good to know he would be alright around this guy's Pokemon.
    Staraptor began to descend, and I leaned forward, preparing to dismount. He flared his wings at the last second, and returned himself to his ball as he did so, disappearing in a flash of white and leaving me to last solidly on my own feet. We'd practised the manouever many times - it was easier and much cooler-looking that myself scrambling around to get down off his back.
    I held my hand out and shook the young Trainer's. "Hey there, I go by Chainy around here," I greeted him. I saw that he was looking at something on my chest, and I followed his gaze with my own. I saw with a sigh that my Elite Ranger badge was pinned to my uniform.
    "I guess Ivy managed to sneak it onto me," I explain wryly. "She's always saying I should act more my rank, but I don't like being all uppity. Out here, I'm just the dude helping you expand your team."
    I pulled off the badge and covered my Ranger uniform with my trademark black overcoat. I assumed it'd get quite cold up here - after all, this was one of the highest points on the whole island. I could certainly feel the cold as I walked over to the gate. You'd think a gate would be useless to guard a collection of mountain peaks, but if you didn't go in through the gate and the sensors picked you up, a crack team of experts came to get you out. Usually in a helicopter. And if I was in the team, a big fat loaded gun.
    I held the badge up in front of a scanner, and a small red laser danced back and forth across it. A slight blurting sound emitted from a speaker, and the metal gate slid into the ground, granting us access. I stepped through, and gestured for the Trainer to do so as well. As he did so, I saw something red and circular on his belt.
    "Hey, I see you have a Pokeplayer with you." I pointed at the device. "Don't forget to activate it to try and attract the Pokemon you're looking for. Also, if you have any repellants, now is the time to use them."
    OOC: Thanks, and lol. xD
    ~~~~

    "Hey there, I go by Chainy around here," the Ranger greeted me.

    It was all happening too fast, and I haven’t even come to realize that my ranger was already right there-in front of me. He caught me staring at his badge, and when he did he modestly explained that he’s just not into being superior and all that. “Out here, I'm just the dude helping you expand your team."

    After that remark I came to my senses and actually got a look of the ranger’s face. I would’ve asked him if he was related to the Veilstone City Gym Leader in Sinnoh, a fighting type user who I’ve challenged before, because they looked much alike. But I didn’t ask him that, because I figured it would be rude to do so. Instead, I came out introducing myself to the ranger.

    “Hello, I’m Nick,” I said quietly, as the ranger put on a black overcoat. “I’m here to catch more flying-type Pokémon.”

    “Don’t worry, It’s my job to assist you in doing so,” Ranger Chainy replied. “You can count on me if anything goes too awry.”

    After exchanging pleasantries, we entered through a metal gate. I got a blue Pokéball, otherwise known as a Great Ball, and called back Melisand into it. I clicked the device, and it turned the Togekiss into light energy, after which it sucked the Pokémon in a snap. I clipped back the Great Ball into my belt, and proceeded entering the gate.

    When we got inside, Chainy noticed that I was carrying a Poképlayer with me. "Don't forget to activate it to try and attract the Pokemon you're looking for,” he said while pointing at the machine.

    He was my Ranger, and I knew that he knows what he’s talking about, so I obey without question. I opened my beige bag and rummaged to find a Voice Disk, one that I had bought in the National Park Shop a long distance back. I got what I was looking for, a circular disk labeled “UNCOMMON--MURKROW”. I inserted the disk into the Poképlayer carefully, and then pressed the button on top of it. It loaded for a second, then played a series of cries that one can easily distinguish as a Murkrow’s.

    “Also, if you have any repellants, now is the time to use them." Chainy instructed me, and I did so as well.

    I pulled up a vial of repellant from one of the side pockets of my black jeans. I noticed that the vial said that it “contains essence of Dragon” and that I, according to its instructions, should spray it around my body. Spraying “essence of Dragon” all over yourself didn’t really sound very appealing, so I smelled the repellant first, although I should never have. It was a foul stench, and since it’s basically essence of Dragon, hopefully no Dragon-type Pokémon will appear. Apparently, Dragons can’t stand each other, and even the essence of another Dragon Pokémon keeps them away.

    “All right, that’s the last of it,” I said as I sprayed all the vial’s contents all over my body.

    OOC: I don't know if you know or not, but your Encounter List isn't that great. What you should try to do is pump out posts that are as good as possible so I have a legitimate excuse to reroll it for better Pokemon. These posts are very good, keep them up and good things are destined to happen to you ^^

    ~~~~~
    Nick unclipped the Pokeplayer from his belt, and inserted a black and light-blue disk with a label slapped on it. I didn't get a good look at the label before he inserted it, but once he pressed the play button I recognised the sounds emitted from the audio device. They were that of a Murkrow. I cursed - the one thing I'd forgotten was my earbuds that blocked out the repetitive sound of Pokeplayer calls. Hopefully this would be Nick's only voice disk.
    Nick then pulled out a vial of Dragon Repellant and opened it up before pouring it all over himself. I winced, and coughed at the smell that was now coming off of him. It was putrid. I usually just poured the repellant onto my backpack, but whatever.
    "Alright, let's get this show on the road. Hopefully you'll run across some good Pokemon," I said, but I wasn't optimistic. One of the major reasons the Outer Heavens weren't visited much was that most of the Pokemon here were quite common on the mainland. The only people that came here were Trainers hoping for an Aerodactyl, collectors looking for a Skarmory, or the occasional Dragon fanatic hoping for an Altaria. Otherwise, there wasn't much going on in this lonely little part of the Park.
    I lead Nick forward, towards the quarter-built hotel. It was a good place to start - the only completed part was the staircase, which was commonly used as a take-off point for the Flyers. Before we could reach it, though, a small white and blue bird fluttered down onto the ground in front of us. It squawked at us and began pecking at the ground. There was a single errant red feather above its eyes that dangled lazily as the bird jerked up and down sharply.
    "Interested in trying to capture a Rufflet?" I asked my Trainer.
    ~~~~

    My Poképlayer played a varied scale of Murkrow noises, calls and sounds, each one more irritating than the last. However, these squawks were not new to me, for back in Johto there would always be a flock of hungry Murkrow nearby when it is time for the berry harvesting season, so I expected the disk to play loud, incessant sounds. Chainy, however, had a different reaction. I read his face and saw displeasure, so I offered him my ear muffs, but to my surprise I didn’t find them inside my bag, so I must have forgotten to bring it with me.

    “Oh well, I guess we’ll both just have to deal with it,” my Ranger told me, and we headed off.

    Both of us then approached what seemed to be a staircase that was meant to be a part of an establishment of some sort, when all of a sudden, a small, one-foot bird appeared right in front of us. It had a distinct, single feather that was attached just above its eyes.

    "Interested in trying to capture a Rufflet?" Chainy asked me, inquiring if I wished to capture the Eaglet Pokémon.

    Truth is; I did want to capture the little eaglet—if they weren’t so common and easily obtainable. I reckon, the Pokémart sells them for $7500, a price I’m willing to pay when the time comes that I really wanted a Rufflet of my own. I analyzed the Pokémon that was in front of us, a habit that I have come to develop whenever I meet a new creature.

    The Rufflet, judging from its plume and short-lengthed down feathers, was relatively quite young, and if I were to hazard a guess and my knowledge of flying Pokémon would not fail me, I’d say it’s only six-months old. Nonetheless, the fighting spirit known to these species of Pokémon was evidently embedded into its psyche, as it was skreighing and puffing out its white feathers; a sign that meant it was ready to battle in combat. The colored feathers on its face formed to resemble a mask, and I thought it looked like a soldier that put war paint on its face before heading to war, or in this case, fighting me and my Pokémon.

    “Ruff—Rufflet,” the Eaglet Pokémon cried.

    It was at this point that I pondered to myself, “Is this really the Pokémon I want to catch and bestow the title of the first Pokémon I’ve caught in the National Park? It really is a healthy flying-type, and once it evolves into a magnificent and valiant Braviary it could prove quite helpful indeed in my journey. And it has quite a nice beak too...”
    In order to aid me in deciding whether or not I should catch this Rufflet, I pulled out another device; something far more advanced than a Poképlayer. It was elliptical in shape, and was red in color. I clicked the white button resembling a Pokéball that was fixed to the device’s right side, which unhinged the device, opening it. It was a standard issue National Pokédex; although I’ve configured mine to suit my need for information, and I’ve also modified and included some minor adjustments and functions to it. I held the Pokédex to a height just above the Rufflet’s, and when the device’s sensors picked up and scanned the Pokémon’s genetic make-up, it beeped and then showed an image of a Rufflet on its display screen. And then, like most Pokédexes, mine started to give us information about the Pokémon, in a rather mechanical voice.

    [They crush berries with their talons. They bravely stand up to any opponent, no matter how strong it is. Rufflet will challenge anything, even strong opponents, without fear. Their frequent fights help them become stronger.]

    “Fights help them become stronger...” I told myself quietly.

    I’ve decided to battle it, eventhough I know fully well that I still had a numerous supply of Pokédolls in my backpack that I could use to guarantee escape from this Pokémon. But as much as I am serious, I am sentimental, and I value stuff like the first Pokémon here I encounter at the park. Fate caused that young Rufflet to appear to me first, and I wasn’t going to taunt destiny by just throwing a plush doll at it and calling it quits.

    So I turned to my Ranger, Chainy, and answered him, “I don’t think capturing such a young Pokémon will be a good idea. I mean, I don’t want to strip it off its family. But it appears as though it wants to battle, so I’ll give this feisty little bird what it’s looking for.”

    My Ranger nodded, and I proceeded with calling my Pokémon of choice out to battle. I got a Pokéball and detached it from my belt; then quickly pushing the red-and-white apparatus’ button I increased its size that’s just right for my palm. I held the Pokéball firmly on my right hand.

    Before throwing the Pokéball, I noticed the label I’ve placed a long time ago on its top portion. It was a sticker that resembled a black skull. I’ve shared a lot of things with the Pokémon inside—we’ve experienced a fair mixture of hard trials and triumphant successes. However, I figured this was no time for a nostalgia trip, and so I threw the Pokéball to the ground, with the thought of making new experiences with the Pokémon it was about to release.

    Before the Pokéball dropped to the ground—and it was only inches away—it opened, releasing a flash of bright light. I used my arm to shield my eyes from this momentary display, and when it had settled, the light energy materialized into a recognizably canine shape. I went to pick the Pokéball up; the steel that formed it was hot for some reason, so I immediately clicked on the button, resizing the ball, and afterwards I quickly clipped it back on to one of the latches of my belt. I then turned my attention towards the Pokémon I have just called out—the very same one that I’ve mentioned I’ve shared so much with.

    The cool atmosphere inside the unfinished hotel slightly rose at the Pokémon’s presence. It had two, bone-like protrusions that formed its horns, located on top of its head. Its body was black, darker than most night skies I’ve seen. It was this quality that this Pokémon was classified literally as “The Dark Pokémon”. It had more bone-like protrusions on its back and neck, and these were shaped like rib bones. On the middle of its chest was another bone-like structure, this time it resembled a skull, and was just like the sticker that labeled the Pokémon’s Pokéball. It was a quadruped, and all four of its ankles seemed to be cuffed in the same material that made up its horns. The Pokémon’s mug and underbelly was a burnt orange, and it exhaled an equally burnt breath. Its lashing tail was just as ominous as the rest of its body; and its blood red eyes were no exception. This Houndoom was my first Pokémon, and I have chosen to call him Scorne.

    Most people cower at the sight and sound of this Pokémon’s howl, and I can not blame them for being that way. I embrace Scorne for what he is, and I like him for that. The Houndoom looked back at me and grunted, before looking back at the Rufflet that was pecking the floor in front of him. I know him well, and if there’s anything that our journey together has taught me it is that he doesn’t like battling cute Pokémon.

    “Come on, Scorne,” I told the Houndoom. “You have got to take this seriously as much as you would a Rhyperior or a Swampert.”

    “Hound, houndoom,” the Dark Pokémon replied, as if it was saying “all right” or “okay”.

    “That’s a good Pokémon,” I praised, as the Houndoom caught the eaglet’s attention.

    Scorne dashed his front right paw on the ground, kicking up dirt that went towards the Rufflet. This angered the Eaglet Pokémon a bit, and it locked on to its fighting spirit. This was it; I was battling the first Pokémon I’ve caught in the National Park.

    Scorne was always serious when I needed him to be, and he’s really an efficient Pokémon to battle with. He had quite a handful of attacks, but I know all his techniques by heart. I believe that memorizing how your Pokémon performs in battle is one of the key elements to training them to their fullest capabilities. I thought for a second, and then called for an attack, or two.

    “Scorne, start off with a Howl attack,” I commanded, with both my fists clenched tightly. “Use it while charging up a Thunder Fang!”

    The Houndoom did as it was told, and began performing the attack I ordered it to do. The Dark Pokémon howled eerily, and though I have been with Scorne for a long time now, his howl still sent shivers to my spine. It was like a wail of a dying man, calling out for help that will never arrive.

    “Houuuuund—doooom,” Scorne exclaimed, pointing his nose upward as he howled loudly.

    It was clear that Houndoom’s attack was rising, as a light film of energy enveloped around him, and his eyes were more determined to fight the Rufflet. Scorne then simultaneously used Thunder Fang while he was still using Howl, and I saw that his howls became even more astonishing. Small sparks of electrical energy began to dance and cackle from his jaws, and eventually to the tips of his four inch fangs. The Thunder Fang attack began to form around his teeth, as he howled ever louder. His howls echoed throughout the place, and the energy in his fangs have begun to attract small clouds above us.

    And at the right moment, when I knew it was time for Scorne to strike, I called out to him, and told him to attack the little eaglet in front of him. I could only guess what would befall the bird Pokémon, but I hope I had chosen the right moves for Scorne to use.

    OOC: I know I already told you, but outstanding.

    “I don’t think capturing such a young Pokémon will be a good idea. I mean, I don’t want to strip it off its family," Nick explained, "But it appears as though it wants to battle, so I’ll give this feisty little bird what it’s looking for.”

    I nodded. I understood him, and was intriuged. Most of the Trainers came to the National Park solely to capture potential additions to their team. They'd never battle a Pokemon for its own growth and benefit. I resolved to watch this Trainer very closely - he seemed like someone special, a cut above the usual crowd.

    Nick detached a PokeBall from his belt and tossed it onto the ground in front of him. A bright white flash blinded me temporarily, and when my eyes cleared a familiar Pokemon was standing in front of me. It was a black-and-red dog Pokemon with bone decorations at its feet, on its head, and around its ribcage. It seemed to darken the area nearby, and small flickers of flame snuck out of its mouth. It was a Houndoom, and it looked like a particularly powerful one at that. I was familiar with the breed because Cameron and Leo, two of my closest friends, both had a Houndoom partner, and Jathan - my younger brother - was raising one. It was a fearsome beast, one of the harder Pokemon to train, but it was one of the best Fire types around.

    The Houndoom took a look at the Rufflet before swinging his head to look at his trainer and grunting. He didn't look pleased.

    “Come on Scorne, you have got to take this seriously as much as you would a Rhyperior or a Swampert,” Nick chided his Pokemon.

    Scorne barked twice, and turned his attention back to the Rufflet as Nick encouraged him, ready to battle. The Houndoom slapped its paw on the ground, sending some pebbles rolling towards the Eaglet Pokemon. They brushed past its feet, and it looked up at the fearsome Fire-typed Pokemon. Instead of running or surrendering, like most small Pokemon would, the Rufflet unleashed a fearsome battle cry. Well, it would have been if the Rufflet's chirping wasn't so high pitched.

    “Scorne, start off with a Howl attack. Use it while charging up a Thunder Fang!” Nick ordered.

    Scorne followed the Rufflet's lead and emitted a battle cry. This battle cry was much more intimidating, however. The Houndoom reared his head to the sky and howled, and the howl echoed across the peaks. The noise spoke of pain and defeat and overwhelming fear. A slight orangey mist rose up from the ground and clung to the Dark Pokemon's skin. Scorne lowered his head, and his eyes were blazing with power and intensity. He then began to charge his Thunder Fang attack - electricity crawled out of his mouth and danced on his skin and teeth, which were slowly becoming sheathed in crackling yellow energy. He continued to howl and bark as this happened, perhaps hoping to intimidate the Rufflet.

    The Rufflet wasn't going to be outmatched, though. It began to flap its wings hard, but it didn't take off into the air. I didn't understand what it was doing until I felt a breeze begin to stir. The breeze got stronger, becoming a full-on wind.

    Scorne was ready to attack, so he dashed towards the small bird Pokemon, electric sparks falling from his mouth as he did so. The Eaglet Pokemon raised its wings and brought them down in front of itself. Two blue waves of wind scythed towards the incoming Houndoom, striking him on his shoulders. I recognised the attack as an Air Slash - a move that often caused the attacking Pokemon to flinch away in surprise.

    That wasn't going to happen to Scorne, though. He shrugged off the bit of damage and pushed against the wind, reaching the small bird. It tried to flutter off to higher ground, but the Houndoom caught one of its legs in his teeth. He shook it around a bit as electricity ran through the Rufflet's body, trying not to hurt it too much. He then tossed it onto the ground, and it landed with a thump on the hard wood floor.

    Any other Pokemon might have run, but not the Rufflet. It got back onto its feet and chirped defiantly, preparing to take whatever the Houndoom was going to give out next.

    OOC: Yeah, since I found out my encounter list was crap, I had to do something for a re-roll... I don't want to waste the 43k I spent on National Park stuff :x

    ~~~~
    I watched Scorne try to intimidate the Rufflet when he charged his Thunder Fang while howling, but I knew the Rufflet would not back down, even if a scary Pokémon such as my Houndoom was performing an even scarier display. Other flying type Pokémon would have fled if they saw what the Rufflet had seen—a powerful Houndoom having his sharp fangs become covered in lightning-like energy. But the Eaglet Pokémon stayed true to what my Pokédex had to say about their species. If he was any at all afraid, I reckon he’s doing one fine job hiding it.
    The Rufflet had then used Tailwind, a flying-type move that involved manipulation of air currents in order to raise its own speed. This move was not new to me, for Melisand, my Togekiss, had perfected the art of air current manipulation, and has in turn learned Tailwind herself. I then saw Scorne was ready to unleash his sparking fury onto the Rufflet, so I gave him my signal, telling him to go for it.
    The Houndoom, with his gaping, electrically-infused mouth wide open, lunged swiftly for the flying-type. I was certain that a super-effective, boosted electric move would inflict heavy damage on something such as a Rufflet. The Eaglet Pokémon wasted no time, however, responding with an attack of its own. It put up its little wings, and flapped them, which released what appeared to be blades made out of wind and of a mysterious energy. Most people can mistake the Rufflet’s attack for an Air Cutter; a move different in effect but similar appearance-wise. However, any observant trainer would identify it as an Air Slash, a move that my Togekiss too, had mastered.
    The flying-type move hit Scorne in its shoulders, but I was sure he would just brush it off, as if barely anything had hit him. And just as I predicted, he did just that, and had endured the Rufflet’s attack with minimal discomfort.
    The Rufflet then tried to fly upwards, hoping to turn itself into dodging my Houndoom’s attack. This proved to be a futile tactic, as Scorne leaped for the Eaglet Pokémon just before it had the chance to take off. Scorne shook the Rufflet to and fro, passing on zaps of electricity onto the bird Pokémon’s leg which he had managed to get a grip on.
    This was where I noticed something utterly different with Scorne. If he was trying his best, he wouldn’t have let go of his opponent so quickly. The Thunder Fang attack did its damage, but it was lesser than what I had expected it to be. He seemed hasty when he tossed to Eaglet onto the ground, so I knew I had to do something.
    As for the Rufflet, well, it got itself back up on its two scaly feet, ready once more for Scorne’s next attacks. I admired the Rufflet’s feistiness, so I continued to tell Scorne to attack.
    In my mind I have figured to order Scorne to use Beat Up, thinking it would be a good idea, but then I remembered that would involve Melisand and Hicarus’ help, and because Melisand was still resting from flying with me earlier, and I really wanted to save Hicarus’ health, I chose not to go with the said dark-type move.
    “All right Scorne, I know you aren’t giving it your all,” I told the Houndoom loud and clear, hoping that he would listen. “I’m not trying to capture this Pokémon, so it would be best if you would drop the attitude and go full on out against it. Do you understand?”
    The Houndoom looked back at me, as its Thunder Fang faded and dissipated away. He barked once, and the look he gave me was an affirming one, as if he wanted to let me know that I could count on him. I already knew that, but hearing it straight from your Pokémon was really reassuring, even if I would never doubt Scorne even in the direst of situations. And with that, I knew that Scorne was back on his game, and I’ve also decided which attack he should strike the Rufflet with.
    I raised my arm and pointed to the Houndoom’s apparent foe, and commanded him without wasting any more time. “Scorne, use Crunch on the Rufflet,” I asked him with a determined tone to my voice. “And unleash a Fire Fang when you have it locked on to your teeth!”
    “Houndoom!” the Dark Pokémon roared, as I continued to remind it to give its best when attacking the opponent.
    And within seconds, Scorne was able to appear right in front of the Eaglet Pokémon, ready with his sharp fangs. The scene would terrify most Pokémon that was the same height and size of the Rufflet, but again this did not seem to bother it at all. I watched on, eager to see what would happen if Scorne landed that Crunch attack as well as that Fire Fang I’ve instructed him to use. As one knows, there is a variety of outcomes that could result to this—the Rufflet’s defense might fall due to the powerful Crunch Scorne could dish out, or it could get burned from the Houndoom’s Fire Fang. It’s said that when you receive a burn from a Houndoom’s fire, the pain will never go away.
    But that’s merely superstition—tales conjured by the old wives of Johto in order to keep youngsters from playing with fire. And as I said, it’s all superstition, and I can’t even be sure if Scorne’s attacks would hit, let alone if his Fire Fang attack would cause a burn on the Rufflet’s fluffy hide.
    Its defense might fall, it might get burned, or it might even get knocked out. I can not say for sure. All I had to do at the moment was place my whole trust on my partner, and hope that he too, places all his power and effort into battling the Rufflet.
    Ranger Chainy and I stood there, watching the Rufflet as it was seconds away from experiencing potential pain of a Houndoom’s teeth.
    “All right Scorne, I know you aren’t giving it your all. I’m not trying to capture this Pokémon, so it would be best if you would drop the attitude and go full on out against it. Do you understand?” Nick asked the Houndoom.
    Scorne looked back at his Trainer and barked. He didn't really want to hurt the Rufflet but this was a battle, and it was his duty to battle as well as he possibly could. The last few sparks of electricity around his mouth faded, and he took a firmer stance, ready to hit the Rufflet good.
    “Scorne, use Crunch on the Rufflet, and unleash a Fire Fang when you have it locked on to your teeth!” Nick ordered.
    Scorne howled and ran towards the Rufflet, dropping his head and opening his fearsome maw. He picked up the Eaglet Pokemon in his mouth and bit down hard. The small bird screeched and fluttered around, trying to escape, but it could not. It lashed out with its beak, scoring a scratch down Scorne's neck, but he ignored the wound and he worked his jaw, crunching on the Flying type. He then summoned up the fire from inside his throat and expelled it through his mouth. The fire slammed into the bird's back and it screeched again, redoubling its efforts to escape.
    After a few seconds of wriggling, the Rufflet drew itself into a ball and light blue energy gathered around it. The Eaglet Pokemon suddenly threw its wings out and its head back, and the blue mist exploded outwards with them. Scorne yelped and let go of the Rufflet as the attack forced his mouth open wide enough to hurt. The Rufflet fell to the ground, but quickly flew up into the air and on top of an unfinished wall. It looked down at the Houndoom and screeched. Now that the Wild Pokemon had the high ground, it'd be a bit harder to Scorne to hit it.
    Then again, some of the Rufflet's feathers were singed, and small scratches were welling up blood. The small bird's chest was fluttering rapidly as it panted. The battle was taking a toll on the bird, and it wouldn't be able to fight for much longer. I just hoped that Nick would know the difference between helping a Pokemon to train and knocking it out completely.
    OOC: Sorry I'm a bit late. I had to think up of something good to respond with, lol. And I uh, wanted to write how Houndoom looked with its Flash Fire, but I figured that I called an attack and it's still up to you if it works or not.
    “Pain is a sensation every sentient being feels; a constant bodily reminder that we are mortal. The idea that we are prone to more of this sensation brings ourselves to excel better—for pain shapes and even restricts our thoughts and actions...”
    “Pain is essential to training, and both trainer and Pokémon must experience it.”
    Those words suddenly came back to my mind, in the foreign voice of the person who addressed these words to me. Who that person was is not a mystery I confide solitarily to my self; I am not ashamed to tell that it was a Team Rocket Admin by the name of Archer who spoke every last word to that statement. It is only natural that one might ask how I came into conversation with a high ranking criminal of an evil syndicate. The explanation is rather simple—in my checkered past I was once a part of the so called ‘evil organization’ that was Team Rocket.
    This happened before I got Scorne and started a journey of my own. At that time, Team Rocket had fled to regroup in the Johto Region, after their huge defeat in Kanto. There was news of a Training Center around our town, in which aspiring trainers-to-be would be taught how to battle. A few days in, those in charge of the center started telling most of the students to stop attending. I was not one of those students. There were only a handful of us left, and it was then that they revealed that they have chosen us to be part of Team Rocket. It was all a scheme—a Grunt training program, because Team Rocket was getting desperate and needed more members for their upcoming comeback to infamy. I played along with the whole thing for a few days, because back then I didn’t really care about what they were planning to do.
    Then, news finally came to me, that I was finally about to receive my first Pokémon. I decided to join Team Rocket full time, but then, something happened. I was finally enlightened of their horrid deeds. It was my first field mission with them, and we were set to capture a flock of Togetic that migrated to the town from the north. When I saw how they captured the helpless, peaceful things—with traps, and electric prongs and such—something in me sparked a feeling I’ve never felt before. The Togetic, having the peaceful nature that they are known to have, did not fight back. Except for one, who I took to be the flock’s leader. I hated myself for not doing anything. My new Houndour would not be able to stand the other grunt’s Pokémon, let alone Archer’s fierce Houndoom. I had to wait until we got back to the headquarters to release them.
    It was quite a long task, but to put it to you short I got to release all the captive Togetic. Archer and the other grunts would have stopped us, but with the help of the Togetic’s leader I convinced them to fight back. In the end, the Togekiss overpowered even Archer’s Pokémon. This was the time that Archer said those words to me; that pain was essential. We escaped, and I have forgotten all about Team Rocket ever since. I would then meet that same leader of the Togetic one week into my journey, capture it, and evolve it into the Pokémon I now call Melisand.
    ***
    I watched Scorne land the attacks I have called him to use perfectly. The sheer power he had inflicted on the Rufflet, however, proved to be too much. Perhaps it was my fault in judgment; to order Scorne to go full force on just a young Rufflet. It was wounded, and I can see its wing feathers singed from the Fire Fang Scorne used.
    It was in pain. And I’ve caused it to be in that state. I will not let myself become like Archer.
    I had to think of a way to end this without knocking the poor thing out. It was clear what I had to do—order the Houndoom to use Roar and hope that the Rufflet flee. The only problem is that the Rufflet might get stubborn and force itself to battle. I hope it wouldn’t, for its own sake.
    “Scorne, listen to me carefully,” I shouted, while looking up at the unfinished roof above us. “There’s a large hole on top of us, big enough for you to shoot a Dark Pulse into the sky. Use it to darken up the place, and then bathe yourself in Flamethrower.”
    After hearing this, both the Houndoom and my Ranger looked at me hesitantly. I was expecting this, since trainers don’t usually tell their Pokémon to attack themselves.
    “Trust me, Scorne,” I pleaded to the Dark type. “With your body blazing in fire once your ability is activated and with the surroundings darkened with your Dark Pulse, one loud and horrifying Roar from you would be enough to scare that resilient Rufflet away.”
    I saw determination in my Pokémon’s eyes.
    “Doom, Houndoom...”
    I knew exactly what he said. I breathed, quietly, and told him:
    “I trust you too.”
    OOC: You can still try to describe it if you want. A common trick is to say what you imagine it will look like - this gives the Ranger an idea of what you're trying to make happen, but it also gives them room to decide what actually goes down.
    ~~~~~

    “Scorne, listen to me carefully. There’s a large hole on top of us, big enough for you to shoot a Dark Pulse into the sky. Use it to darken up the place, and then bathe yourself in Flamethrower," Nick shouted.

    I looked at the Trainer strangely. It made technical sense, seeing as Houndoom's true power wasn't revealed until it was struck by fire, but usually Flash Fire wasn't as powerful when it was self activated. However, I couldn't understand the point behind launching a Dark Pulse into the sky. The reason was soon revealed with Nick's next call.

    “Trust me, Scorne, with your body blazing in fire once your ability is activated and with the surroundings darkened with your Dark Pulse, one loud and horrifying Roar from you would be enough to scare that resilient Rufflet away,” Nick explained.

    Ah, that explained it. It made sense now - Nick was trying to scare the brave little Rufflet off as opposed to knocking it out. The Rufflet's nature meant that it wouldn't run, so Nick would have to make the Houndoom look super scary. Scorne started to growl, and a black aura began to emanate from his body, growing until he was surrounded completely. The Dark Pulse began to leech upwards, staining the air towards the hole in the rafters, spreading outwards as it traveled. The result was a darkened area all around the battlefield, making Scorne's internal light that much more terrifying.

    Despite this, the Rufflet refused to run. I could see it quiver, but nonetheless it dived off the perch towards the Houndoom, folding its wings back and becoming little more than a feather-coated missile. It crashed into Scorne's chest, just below its neck. Unlicky for the Flying-typed Pokemon, that was when Scorne began his Flamethrower. He opened his jaws, and flames began to leak out, dripping down his muzzle and across his back. The Rufflet squawked and fluttered back and the fire missed it by a centimetre. The boiling flames appeared to sink into Scorne's skin, and he roared as the flames writhing around him flared outwards. It looked like he was made purely of dark hide and dancing fire. Two tongues of fire burned up the side of his muzzle past his eyes, and he howled again, looking straight at the Rufflet, who was now quivering violently. It stood its ground for a couple of seconds before finally turning around and launching into the air, flying away from the fearsome Fire type as fast as it could.

    "Good battle," I said to Nick. "That Rufflet will probably use the experience from this battle in its future fights."

    I scuffed my feet on the ground, and looked around the dilapidated hotel. The barely-constructed second-floor was often used as a take-off point, and if Nick wanted to hunt down some Flying types it'd be a good call to get up into the air. Otherwise, we could leave the hotel and follow the trail around on this peak - it was one of the biggest, but the trail around it only took like 20 minutes. Finally, sometimes some rare Pokemon hid in the basement - we could always try looking down there.

    "Take the lead, I'll follow you." I nodded.

    OOC: I'm going to school starting tomorrow, so I won't be online much. But don't worry, I'll be checking this everyday. ^_^

    Horrifying. There was absolutely no other word that could describe Scorne at that very moment. The sky slowly failed to provide light as the Dark Pulse ascended higher, immersing the atmosphere in crepuscular darkness, and in turn it made the morning sky into a nocturnal canvass. The Houndoom’s body; then covered in an intense ever-burning fire, added to his over-all image of what fear truly means. The small, white eaglet managed to land one last attack on the canine-like Pokémon’s chest, before realizing that its opponent was no longer just a Houndoom. No, he was not just a Houndoom, for Scorne was absolute terror in its tangible form.

    The bones that decorated his body seemed to emanate a ghastly aura, and because I was only feet away from the Houndoom, I felt this aura touch my skin. As I said, truly horrifying.

    With the place void of light and his body engulfed in a salamandra of flames, Scorne let out a fearsome Roar attack. This one was distinctly different from his earlier howl which spoke of gloom and lost hope. It was more dreadful, as if the Roar’s echoes were like a hot rapier that sliced repeatedly through your body. Surely now the Rufflet was cowering, and everything the Houndoom had done was enough to override its nature to battle. The Rufflet let out a high-pitched squawk before it fled.

    “All right Scorne,” I announced, with the Houndoom’s Pokéball in my hand. “I think that did it. The Rufflet’s gone, so you better rest back inside your Pokéball.”

    The fires that covered the Dark Pokémon quickly got absorbed into his body, making his black hide shine with an ember glow. I have seen Scorne’s Flash Fire ability activate before, but seeing it again was just astonishing. The place then returned back to its former state, with the darkness brought about by Scorne’s attack gradually evaporating into nothingness. Everything looked normal again, and I called Scorne back into his Pokéball. A red-tinted ray turned Scorne into pure energy, eventually drawing him inside theball. The device’s lock mechanism closed itself, and I resized it before clipping it back on my belt.

    “Good battle,” Ranger Chainy told me. “That Rufflet will probably use the experience from this battle in its future fights.”

    I saw relief in him, probably because I didn’t knock the Rufflet out cold. I understood him, as it was a Ranger’s job to take care of all wildlife and the environment. Well, at least that’s what I read on a post in the National Park’s front gate with the heading “RANGER’S MISSION” written on it.

    “Thanks, I’m just glad that the Rufflet came to its senses and fled while it could. It couldn’t have continued attacking anyways, not in that state.” I said to the Ranger, as he told me where he could go next.

    * * * *

    It appears that I have three options based on the Ranger’s words. As he said, we could use the hotel’s staircase as a take-off point and try to find Pokémon while airborne; or we could walk on foot on the peak’s trail; or even as a last option we could venture into the basement of the unfinished establishment. If he knew me personally, Chainy would know that I would choose to go up in the air. However, I still think that Melisand needs more rest, so I decided against it. Of course Hicarus, my Dragonite, knows the move Fly as well, but I haven’t really gotten to fly with her that much. And so, there was either walking on a trail, or going into some dusty basement.

    I really wanted to find a Murkrow, so I decided to check on its habitat and behavior. I got my Pokédex and opened it, and using one of the functions I added to the device, I got the information I needed.

    [Murkrow are fond of anything that sparkles. They are nocturnal, but on rare occasions they can be seen scavenging for food during the day.]

    I pressed on the display screen, touching a digital button labeled “HABITAT”. The Pokédex then continued:

    [Murkrow usually live in forests or swamps and other forms of wetland. They have been known to move into cities and old buildings, however.]

    “Well, I think that has helped me decide,” I told my Ranger. “Since it is rare to see Murkrow outside during the day, I don’t think we’ll find them in the air, or on that mountain trail.”

    I paused for a moment, and looked back at the events that happened earlier. Just a few minutes ago, I would have mistaken this whole scene to be night, but as it all cleared away, there was no mistaking that it was indeed, clearly day.

    “My Pokédex says I could find them in old buildings like this. They might be hiding in the basement of this hotel—who knows? Regardless, I wish to go there next, Ranger.”

    The Elite Ranger nodded in affirmation, and told me with a grin: “Take the lead, I'll follow you.”

    Okay. If there is something zombie and horror flicks have taught me, it’s to never—never—go into dark, confined places like a basement alone. Luckily, I have my trusted Pokémon with me, and I’m quite sure Chainy would help me if there even are any zombies in there. Yeah, he’d help me. I think.

    I returned my Pokédex back into my pocket. I then got my Poképlayer—it was still holding the Murkrow Voice Disk—and pressed play for the second time. As expected, loud, disorienting squawks and screeches came from the Poképlayer, as I neared first the entrance to the dust-covered hotel’s basement, with my Ranger close behind.

    Ranger Chainy

    OOC: Sure, I'll try to keep this updated, lots of stuff going on but I'm really enjoying this run ^^

    ~~~~~
    Nick consulted his PokeDex as he looked around, trying to figure out where it was best to go from here. Trainers often brought their PokeDexes to the Park, and I thought it was a good idea. Not all Trainers had them, though - I never received one, and Jathan never had either. Then again, we were homeschooled Trainers who had received their first Pokemon through random happenstance without a Professor involved in any way shape or form.
    “Well, I think that has helped me decide,” Nick spoke up. "Since it is rare to see Murkrow outside during the day, I don’t think we’ll find them in the air, or on that mountain trail.”
    "Stands to reason." I nodded.
    “My Pokédex says I could find them in old buildings like this. They might be hiding in the basement of this hotel—who knows? Regardless, I wish to go there next, Ranger.”
    "Certainly. By the way, feel free to call me Chainy." I smiled. "Take the lead, I'll follow you."
    Nick led me to the pair of big oak doors that led down to the basement. It was one of the very few parts of any of the buildings here that had been completed, and it was currently used by the Rangers as a place to bunker down in when rough storms came through here. I also had a stash hidden here - beer, potato chips, portable televison and like - but I was enjoying being here too much to think of getting drunk. I grasped one of the cold iron rings and heaved it outwards. It swung open with a creak, revealing the darkness inside. I reached in and flicked the light switch on.
    Nothing happened.
    "Damn, freaking lights must be broken or something," I muttered. I tapped one of the PokeBalls on my belt, and a Pokemon was released amongst a flash of white light. It looked indistinct and was wearing a strange grey helmet. Yellow markings covered its stomach and arms and a single red eye blinked at us.
    "Hey Specialle," I greeted the Dusknoir. "This is Nick, our Trainer for today," I said as I pointed to him.
    She crooned a hello, a soft echoing sound that seemed to trill slightly as it ended. Despite being a Ghost type, she was quite friendly and gentle, only turning nasty when something angered or annoyed her.
    "Do you think you can give us some light?" I asked her.
    She moaned and nodded, and opened one of her big grey hands. A small fireball blossomed in her palm, and it rose up to hang between Nick and I. I could tell by the way Specialle was looking around that she was curious as to where we were - she'd never been to Outer Heavens before.
    "Alright, you can take a look around, just stay close incase I need you, okay?" I told her.
    She trilled happily and slowly faded down into the floor, passing through the wood like it wasn't even there. I smiled at Nick again, and I began to lead him down the steps into the cellar. The cellar was cut into the mountain-top so that wines and other such supplies could be refridgerated at no extra costs. There was no wine left though - scavengers had liberated them all by now. I might have taken a couple bottles; no one had asked me if I had, and I saw no reason to come forward. They'd been left here, and finders keepers.
    I heard a sudden crowing, and I looked up at the stone rafters to my left. Sitting up there, looking down at us on the staircase with beady eyes was one of the objects of Nick's quest, a Murkrow. It cawed at us again and flapped its wings, tilting its head as if to ask us why we were here.
    "Well, there's your Murkrow," I said to Nick, taking a few steps backwards.
    As my Pokédex helped me lock onto my decision, I told my Ranger where I wanted to go; that is, the basement. For some reason, I addressed Chainy by ‘Ranger’ in a tone that hinted respect for his authority. He caught onto this, and like he said a while ago he truly was not that kind of person who feels superior with his power. I could tell he was sincere with this, and he replied to me in agreement, while letting me know that he did not at all mind being called by his given name.
    As decided I took the lead, walking a few steps until I reached a pair of large, wooden doors, which I assumed to be the entrance to the tattered hotel’s basement. I put a hand on one of its iron rings; my gloves coming into contact with what seemed to be Gyarados engravings etched onto its metalwork. But then, Chainy offered me his help—and knowing that he will probably open the doors faster I let him open it instead. I should really remember that I’m not alone in this expedition, and that I shouldn’t try to do everything by my self. It’s always better to work as a team. I might have learned that from the teachings of a certain syndicate, but still, that saying is really true. Chainy was a pretty nice Ranger, as I assume all Rangers are; or well, most of them.
    Chainy then heaved the door, pulling it upwards. The old oak that composed the door gave an eerie creak as it opened slowly. It revealed an extremely dark space, like an endless void which made it too hard for both of us to see any movement something inside would make. The Ranger reached inside with his arm; perhaps he was looking for a light switch of some sort, or possibly even a lamp. I heard a faint clicking sound, expecting that the basement would become illuminated with the lights. No such event followed, however, and more of the same, pitch-black darkness lingered, and in my head I could just imagine it laughing, taunting the Ranger and his efforts to light up the whole place.
    "Damn, freaking lights must be broken or something," the Ranger told himself.
    Even so, I can’t say his remark got me worried. Because after all, Rangers are trained for these kinds of situations. And I’m pretty sure Chainy has been on enough expeditions here on the National Park for him to know what to do. After all, he has been granted the distinction of being elite, even if he is modest about it. We entered the basement, with every direction still a black blur.
    Not long after I saw a three-second burst of bright, white energy coming from Chainy. The familiar sound that accompanied the release of light made me deduce that he has opened a Pokémon, possibly one that would help us see better.
    I could not really see well at that time, but the gigantic, human-shaped form and those large, creepy arms could only belong to a Dusknoir. The yellow bands on her body then gave off minimal light, along with a cyclopean, crimson eye that kept blinking at us. Chainy proceeded to introduce me to the thing, or apparently, it’s a she.
    “Hey Specialle, this is Nick, our trainer for today,” the Ranger in the overcoat said.
    I really didn’t know how I would introduce myself to a ghost Pokémon; their mysterious ways have always allured me. I was at a lack for words, so I just gave the Dusknoir a nod and a wave. I then remembered I once had a Dusknoir too. Mortifex was his name, and I’m sure Argent—that’s the name of the trainer I gave him to—would take care of him very well. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that kid, and last we spoke he was talking about becoming a Ranger. Maybe Chainy knows him? Now was not the time to ask, I thought.
    The Dusknoir greeted me in a perplexing rumbling, and how she made that sound was a mystery to me. The weird sound echoed for a bit, as her trainer asked her if she would provide us with light so we could proceed.
    The Gripper Pokémon contorted her hands in a slow, yet elegant fashion, creating a small flick of burning fire that started to build up, gradually forming into a scintillating orb that provided enough incandescence for us to see. The fire ball resembled something like my old Dusknoir’s Will-o-wisp attack. It bobbed slightly up and down, before fixing itself on top of us. The Dusknoir then seemed to want to explore the place, so Chainy allowed the Ghost-type to wander off but within close range. In a snap she faded as fast as haze, disappearing into whatever object she passed through.
    We moved on.
    As we moved deeper into the basement, I couldn’t help but notice a faint, sweet smell in the air. It reminded me of the aroma of Grepa berries we had in our backyard back at Johto. We walked into a cellar and the scent of berries all made sense, because Grepas are usually made into wine more often that it is used to make some Pokéblock or Poffins. My Poképlayer was still playing the Murkrow noises, but then I heard a sharp cry of a Pokémon. It did not sound like it was recorded, no, it was here. And it’s close. I turned the Poképlayer off to better hear the Pokémon.
    And there it was—cleaning its shiny, sable feathers was a Murkrow. There was some sort of jewelry near its feet, and I’m guessing this Pokémon took it from someone. On its head was feathers arranged into a hat-like shape, much like that of a witch’s. Its bill was yellow and somewhat crooked, and its talons were short but sharp. The one foot bird also had a good set of tail-feathers which formed somewhat of a broom. It tilted its head at me, as those lovely, red eyes stared at my face.
    “Murkrow,” the Pokémon exclaimed.
    I mentioned before how much I love Dark-types, and how I love Flying-types even more. But a Murkrow—it wasn’t just any of those types, it was both! I was glad that I found what I was looking for, and my time in the National Park is proving itself to be rewarding.
    “Well, there’s your Murkrow,” Ranger Chainy told me, as he took a few steps back, allowing me to have enough space to battle the Darkness Pokémon.
    I noticed my Ranger’s choice of words—‘your Murkrow’. Well, I just hope I get to call it mine before I leave this place. Just like with any other Pokémon I encounter, I had to know more about it. Earlier my Pokédex gave me an insight to the Pokémon’s behavior and habitat preferences. But this time, I need to know what it’s capable of in battle.
    I retrieved the red device from my pocket. It beeped as it scanned the Murkrow in front of me.
    [It is said that when chased, it lures its attacker onto dark mountain trails where the foe will get lost.]
    I kind of expected it to say that, as I’ve had my fair share of Murkrow experiences in my past. I returned the National Pokédex back in its place, and began to decide on whom to battle with.
    Since I wanted to actually capture the crow-like Pokémon, Melisand was an obvious choice for me. She’s always helped me catch my Pokémon, and she usually doesn’t end up knocking them out, as she knows the job is to only weaken it enough for me to capture it with a Pokéball. I detached a Great Ball from my belt, letting loose a magnificent creature of utmost purity.
    “Melisand, I choose you!” I called, as the Jubilee Pokémon started to materialize back into her body.
    There was a bit of contrast right there—as Togekiss are believed to bring joy and happiness to those around it; as opposed to a Murkrow that are feared for bringing misfortune. Bringer of ill-luck or not, I am determined to make that Murkrow a part of my team.
    I turned to my Togekiss, and asked the flying-type if it had enough rest for it to battle.
    “Kiss, Toge-togekiss,” she replied in a calming voice, confirming my query in regards to her capacity to battle.
    “That’s great then, because I need you to help me weaken that Murkrow,” I continued, while petting her in the head. “That Pokémon will soon be a part of our journey, and I’m counting on you to fulfill the task of making sure I capture it, okay?”
    The white-colored, bird-like Pokémon replied happily once more, and now we were ready to battle.
    Naturally, I would have Melisand execute a Yawn attack, as putting a Pokémon to sleep naturally made it easier for me to get a capture. However, I remembered that Murkrow has Insomnia as one of its abilities, a special skill that allows Murkrow to ignore being induced into somnolence while in battle. It could have Super Luck instead of Insomnia, though. But I’m not going to take any risks.
    “Okay, Melisand, try to use Thunder Wave so that the Murkrow will get paralyzed,” I ordered the Togekiss, as an excited feeling swelled up in me. “I want you to follow Thunder Wave with one Ancient Power attack!”
    “Toge-toge,” Melisand answered me back, as she began to perform the combo I told her to execute.
    A thin, blue streak of electromagnetic energy started to come out from Melisand’s body. It was a weird picture to see an electric-type move coming from a Pokémon like Melisand, but admittedly it was equally dazzling. The Thunder Wave then shot for the Murkrow. When one is to put the effects of Thunder Wave simply; it paralyzes its target. And I could guess the Murkrow will be paralyzed too, but it was too early to make that assumption. I took one step back and let the Togekiss do her thing.
    Ranger Chainy
    ~~~~~

    "Melisand, I choose you!" Nick said as a bright burst of white light temporarily lit up the area. The cellar looked much like any old wine cellar - barrels and crates were left lying around on the floor. The ceiling was supported by wooden crossbeams from which lightbulbs were swaying gently, but they weren't on. I made a mental note to have one of the techies come up here and repair the lights. I could probably do it myself, but one of the few joys of being an Elite Ranger was the ability to delegate annoying tasks.

    The flash revealed a Togekiss, sitting happily at the bottom of the staircase. I was happy to see that this was his Flying Pokemon of choice - Dual wasn't a fan of Flying types, but Togekiss bothered him the least, due to that fact that they were very happy-natured Pokemon, and Dual could keep pace with them in battle.

    "Are you feeling up to a battle with this Murkrow?" Nick asked the white ovaloid bird.

    The Togekiss cooed, and Nick smiled. “That’s great then, because I need you to help me weaken that Murkrow. That Pokémon will soon be a part of our journey, and I’m counting on you to fulfill the task of making sure I capture it, okay?” he asked.

    Melisand cooed once more, and took a few hop-like steps towards the Murkrow, who was watching us from up on his perch. This would be an interesting battle, I thought. Usually battles between two Flying-type Pokemon involved aerial manouevers and dogfighting, but in the cramped cellar there wasn't much room for any of that. Nick would have to adapt Melisand's fighting style to this unusual environmment.

    “Okay, Melisand, try to use Thunder Wave so that the Murkrow will get paralyzed. I want you to follow Thunder Wave with one Ancient Power attack!” Nick commanded.

    Melisand nodded, and brief flickers of blue electricity whirled their way up her body, preparing to dart towards the Murkrow. I watched the hypnotic dance of the waves, but the sight was soon interrupted by a raucous cawing. My head quickly turned to look at the Murkrow, who was making some raucous screeching noises and bobbing his head up and down quickly in an incredibly irritating fashion. Melisand looked up at the Murkrow and her eyes narrowed. The electricity that was gathering around her body leaped forward, but not towards the Murkrow. Instead, it pulverised a bit of the stone floor, creating lots of little rocks and chips.

    Melisand began to glow a soft light purple, and the pieces of stone hovered into the air in front of her. Most of the pieces were about the size of baseballs, but there were also a fair few pieces that were coin-sized. Melisand raised her wings into the air in what looked a lot like a shooing motion, and the rocks moved quickly towards the Murkrow. A good number of them struck the Murkrow, who screeched but managed to hang onto his perch. He flapped his wings forwards in the exact same manner that Melisand had, and the rocks that had hit him and were now falling to the floor instead were deflected towards the Togekiss. There was about seven of them, and they all hit Melisand in the chest before falling to the ground. Melisand grunted in discomfort, but didn't seem to have taken too much damage.

    OOC: School, ugh. And uh, I described Melisand's Hidden Power + Psychic combo because it wasn't really meant to be directed at the Murkrow, not now at least. I hope that's okay :x

    ~~~~
    The electromagnetic waves that surged throughout the Togekiss’ body danced in a serpentine motion, creating an extremely paralyzing force around the Flying-type. Just as I directed her, Melisand let loose the Thunder Wave attack towards the Murkrow, who just noticed I was battling with it. There was a glint of light in its eye when I looked at it, as it began squawking, while flapping its wings repeatedly. Just before the Thunder Wave had hit the Darkness Pokémon, the Murkrow made a hand gesture to the Togekiss, using its wings to convey insults at Melisand, trying to ridicule her into a challenge of strength and brawn. At that moment, Murkrow had a black aura surrounding its wings. It bobbed its head a few times as it dud this too. And to my surprise, the Togekiss’ Thunder Wave got directed towards the cold cellar floor, completely missing its target by mere inches. It wasn’t like Melisand to disobey me, so I figured this must have something to do with the gesticulations of Murkrow’s wings.
    “Oh man,” I exclaimed in exasperation, having finally figured out what caused Melisand to fail hitting its target. “I think that Murkrow just put you under Taunt, Melisand.”
    The white, oval-shaped Pokémon looked back at me, with a sweat drop near her right eye.
    “Toge-togekiss, toge!”
    And that confirmed it. Melisand was taunted, meaning she won’t be able to use non-attacking moves. This complicated things a bit, although deep inside I applauded the Murkrow for staying true to its clever and mischievous attitude. I would have told Melisand to discontinue with the Ancient Power attack I told her to use earlier, but I didn’t had the chance to—she already started attacking the Murkrow.
    This could be the mental effects of Taunt—stimulating Togekiss’ mind to attack without hesitation. Melisand channeled power from her forefathers and mothers, as she mystically transformed this ancient power into her own body. She raised both her wings up, forging brown stones from the energy she collected. It picked up some nearby pebbles as well, before Melisand directed them at the Murkrow with a thrusting motion.
    The stones hit and damaged the Darkness Pokémon, although not by much, but good enough for the first blow. The rocks made out of primal mana disappeared as each of them bombarded the crow-like Pokémon. In response, the Murkrow got up, shaking its feather-crest to keep itself alert despite being damaged by Melisand’s attack.
    And suddenly, a light-blue nimbus clothed the Murkrow, striking me with awe as the aura enveloped the Pokémon. It then began to move in a familiar fashion, and after it raised both its wings I realized it was copying Melisand’s movements. And just as I figured this clever Murkrow can’t be any trickier, I find it copying my Togekiss’ attack with Mirror Move. This was no ordinary Murkrow indeed. Just like my Togekiss the Murkrow unleashed an Ancient Power, matching Melisand’s last attack, even in terms with the amount of stones she forged from energy. The attack hit Melisand as well, but even though Ancient Power was a Rock-type move, it wasn’t a problem for the Togekiss to take a hit. She didn’t look hurt at all, as she appeared to be geared up to battle more than ever.
    “Fine job, Melisand!” I said, cheering on my ever-trusted Togekiss. “I know you’re acting this way only because of Taunt, but try to clear your mind. Focus on doing what’s right, and I’m sure you’ll pull through and do it!”
    The Togekiss replied in a soft, amorous cry, determined and ready to dace the Murkrow with grace in battle.
    This Murkrow is a tricky one, and I have to step up my game if I want to catch it. And I do, oh so very much. I can’t tell Melisand to non-attacking moves, so I just have to rely in technique of execution. Recalling the fact that Murkrow are fond of shiny objects, I decided to use this to my own advantage. Thinking of what move Melisand knew that would create a sparkling display, I figured her Hidden Power would do it best. This move, like most trainers know, varied dependently on each individual Pokémon. Melisand’s Hidden Power was that of the Electric type—and what move made a shinier display more than glistening yellow balls of energy? And so I ordered the Togekiss to use the said attack.
    “Melisand, go and use Hidden Power,” I said, telling her loud and clear. “Then use Psychic to suspend the Hidden Power’s orbs in the air. Move the orbs around, and try to distract and confuse the Murkrow with it. Do it like you did in the last Pokémon contest we entered, okay?”
    Yes, we’ve performed this combination of attacks before, but in a contest rather in a battle. We entered a Cute Contest in Verdanturf Town during my brief visit to the Hoenn Region, where the mentioned combination earned us second place. We didn’t win, but hey—it was a great experience nonetheless, and I’m glad I could apply what I’ve learned in battle.
    Melisand started to perform the attack, and with imperturbable form and style she unleashed a flurry of shining, yellow orbs as she twisted slightly above the air. The orbs then went upwards, and with a purple blast from Togekiss’ head, Psychic made the orbs dangle in mid-air. The left and right tufts on her head then began to glow a soothing purple, as she controlled the Hidden Power’s movements. I wasn’t at all sure if this would get the Murkrow’s attention, but I had to at least try something.
    “That’s excellent, Melisand,” I uttered. “When you think you have Murkrow distracted, drop the orbs on it, and then follow it up with a Tri-attack if you think it’s not that badly hurt.”
    Even if the yellow orbs were an astonishing sight, it was still made up of electrical energy, that could also be utilized to weaken the Murkrow. I wasn’t afraid they would do extremely heavy damage, for they were coated in psychic energy, a force dark Pokémon suck as Murkrow usually resisted. One can never be too certain, I know, but I knew Melisand. She won’t exert her full power in attacks if she knows the opposing Pokémon couldn’t take it—she knew that her mission was only to weaken whatever Pokémon I’m trying to catch.
    With the help of her Psychic attack, Melisand moved the orbs in zigzags, and I noticed this brightened up the place just as Chainy’s Dusknoir did with its Will-o-wisp.
    The Murkrow cawed, and I closed my fists in anticipation.
    “Fine job, Melisand! I know you’re acting this way only because of Taunt, but try to clear your mind. Focus on doing what’s right, and I’m sure you’ll pull through and do it!” Nick called out, reinforcing his Pokemon. It was important to give one's Pokemon psychological reinforcement when they were under an affliction like Taunt or Torment or Confusion, lest they succumb to the negative effects said afflictions caused.
    “Melisand, go and use Hidden Power. Then use Psychic to suspend the Hidden Power’s orbs in the air. Move the orbs around, and try to distract and confuse the Murkrow with it. Do it like you did in the last Pokémon contest we entered, okay?” Nick asked.
    Melisand began the combination attack silently. The Murkrow watched on, intrigued, as yellow sparks crawled up the Togekiss' fluffy white body towards her wings. The Murkrow didn't seem too worried, though - it shuffled on its perch and closed its eyes as if it didn't need to pay any attention to the Togekiss whatsoever.
    Melisand raised her wings in the air, and a ring of glowing yellow orbs flew up towards the ceiling. They were slightly coated in purple, and when they reached the wooden beams they stopped and began to dance in a circle, bobbing and weaving mesmerisingly. The Murkrow's eyes suddenly snapped open, and it couldn't help but gaze at the dancing yellow spheres, completely entranced by the flow of the dance.
    “That’s excellent, Melisand,” Nick said. “When you think you have Murkrow distracted, drop the orbs on it, and then follow it up with a Tri-attack if you think it’s not that badly hurt.”
    Melisand's right eye suddenly twitched, and the orbs stopped, hanging in midair. They then shot inwards towards the Murkrow, who cawed in surprise. It took off into the air with a single flap of its wings, and one of the yellow orbs smashed into the perch where it had been seconds before, pulverising the wood before fading into nothingness. The Murkrow dodged a second and a third orb by jinking in the air, but the fourth one grazed its wing, causing it to spiral down towards the ground. The last few orbs buzzed down beneath it, and then flew up into the Darkness Pokemon, knocking it spiraling into the air.
    Remembering the last part of her command, Melisand drew in a deep breath. When she exhaled, a bright white beam blasted out of her mouth, except it wasn't pure white - parts of the beam were tinged red, yellow, and pale blue. The Tri Attack made contact with the Murkrow, picking it up and pushing it into the ceiling. Thankfully, Melisand only fired a burst - a sustained attack might have brought down the cellar ceiling on top of us!
    The Murkrow fluttered to the ground, and got to its feet. It cawed at us, and took a few steps backwards, fading into the dark. I looked around, trying to see it in the red-shaded light of Specialle's Will-o-Wisp, but I couldn't discern the Dark-type's location. I turned on the heat-sensor mode of my lens, but I still couldn't see anything.
    Suddenly, the Murkrow reappeared right above Melisand and flew straight down towards her, tackling the large white Pokemon and biting her with its beak as it did so before quickly swooping away into the darkness again. I wasn't entirely sure how the Murkrow had managed to get this close without being seen, but it was a Dark-type Pokemon - it had plenty of tricks up its sleeve. I knew that it wouldn't run away from this battle - it was too proud - but would Nick be able to find the Murkrow before it could launch another surprise attack?
    Melisand did well, weakening the clever Murkrow to its feet. However, I think there is still room for one more attack—something that would deal just enough to damage the Murkrow a little bit more. Another super-effective Hidden Power might prove to be too strong for the Murkrow at this state, even if its Calm Mind did raise its special defence. If only Togekiss was no longer under the effects of Taunt!
    But I know I mustn’t let this predicament hinder my success at capturing this Pokémon. Another Tri Attack could work, but I reckon that is one of Melisand’s more powerful moves. Ancient Power might just be able to cut it, but knowing channeling energy like that could prove to be quite some work for the Togekiss, and I don’t want to exhaust her, seeing as our time at the National Park was only just beginning.
    There was really no other choice I could make other than using a low-damaging special move at this point. Magical Leaf and Shadow Ball were out of the question, because I don’t think they would be able to do anything at all. The attack also needed to be neutral-hitting towards a Dark and Flying type such as Murkrow, because I don’t want to waste Melisand’s strength by calling out attacks that barely do anything, while at the same time I can’t risk telling the Togekiss to use a super-effective move that could potentially knock the Murkrow out.
    “Melisand, we need to weaken the Murkrow just a little bit more,” I exclaimed, having finally thought of a move my Togekiss could use. “Taunt is still preventing you to use your status-inducing moves, so we’ll have to rely on your own attacks to weaken it.”
    “Togekiss, toge!”
    The Togekiss replied in the same, heavenly voice I’ve always heard from her.
    “That Murkrow has its Special Defence raised by Calm Mind, so I think using Water Pulse wouldn’t hurt it so much that it would faint,” I ordered the Melisand to use the Water-type move because it was perfect—a special move having medium base power. Plus, it also hits a Dark and Flying type neutrally, so it will be just right.
    The triangular patterns on Melisand’s belly then began to glow a fascinating blue, as the Jubilee Pokémon obeyed my command. A fact about Water Pulse was that a lot of non-water Pokémon are able to learn it. Those non-water types, Togekiss included, usually tap underground networks of water to create the attack, while most water type Pokémon just utilized their inner energies to forge the Water Pulse.
    And just as expected, the Togekiss tapped into a subterranean pocket of mountain-water deep beneath the ground, as an aqueous sphere began to materialize in front of her. It was always marvelous to see Melisand perform attacks, because she does so in a very calming, perhaps even in a serene way. The ball of water grew to about the size of a soccer ball, hanging in front of Melisand like a projectile ready that was ready to be fired.
    She looked back at me, as if asking permission to release the Water attack.
    “Go for it, Melisand!”
    “Melisand, we need to weaken the Murkrow just a little bit more,” Nick said thoughfully. “Taunt is still preventing you to use your status-inducing moves, so we’ll have to rely on your own attacks to weaken it. That Murkrow has its Special Defence raised by Calm Mind, so I think using Water Pulse wouldn’t hurt it so much that it would faint."
    Melisand cried softly. Small, almost invisible drops of water began flowing up from cracks in the floor, moving up towards a slowly coalescing ball of liquid that was hovering in front of the Normal-type Pokemon. It grew in size until it was fairly big, probably enough to drown someone. The Togekiss looked back at her Trainer as if requesting permission to begin the attack.
    "Go for it, Melisand!" Nick yelled.
    Melisand hooted affirmingly, and began to look around the cellar for the Murkrow. She scanned the entire room, utilising a grid pattern search to try and locate the Dark-type, but to no avail. The Togekiss looked a little confused, as if she was unsure what to do. Suddenly, a slightly lighter patch of darkness streaked towards the Togekiss and crashed into her neck. The Murkrow rebounded off of her fluffy chest and onto the ground, and suddenly Melisand had a target. The orb of water separated into many different sized rings, like it had been cut perfectly by an impossibly sharp knife. The rings flew towards the Murkrow and every single one hit it, knocking it backwards repeatedly. The last one threw it into a concrete pillar. The Murkrow squawked painfully and fluttered around, trying to get its feet underneath it, but it couldn't.
    "This is the perfect time for a capture," I said to Nick. "You should probably throw a ball before it manages to escape off into the darkness again."
    OOC: Sorry for the short post. :s
    "This is the perfect time for a capture," Chainy said to me. "You should probably throw a ball before it manages to escape off into the darkness again."
    He was absolutely right. If there was ever any time to capture the Murkrow it was now. Like he said, it might retreat back to the darkness of the cellar, or it might attempt another fatal Brave Bird. I looked at my Togekiss’ face—she appeared accomplished and did not seem to be the under the pressure of Taunt any longer. This was a good sign, and I quickly retrieved a small, green and white orb from my right pocket. The Park Ball had a rough feel to it, probably because of the camouflage pattern on the top portion of the ball. The one I acquired from my pocket also had an ‘H’ written on it.
    Within just seconds, I clicked the Hyper Ball and it grew to a larger size, and then threw it into the direction of the Murkrow. The projectile hit the crow-like Pokémon, and with a slight tap on its feather-crest the Hyper Ball transformed the Pokémon into light energy, before drawing it inside, as a Wailord’s gape would when feeding.
    The Hyper Ball closed and fell to the ground. It started shaking to and fro, just as I had expected it to do.
    With a bit of luck, this could just be my first capture in the National Park. But I can’t be overconfident—the Murkrow was a clever creature, and I fear it might break the Hyper Ball’s locking mechanism.
