Ranger Chainy

    OOC: Not a problem. Please don't say the ball hits the Pokemon in future, though - that's for the Ranger to decide. No harm done, though.

    ~~~~~
    Nick apparently decided to take my advice. He gave both Melisand and the Murkrow a quick look before reaching into his right pocket with his hand. He pulled out a small sphere and it expanded to fit snugly in his palm. I recognised the matte camouflage finish - it was a HyperBall. That was a bit of a strange choice, I thought, especially considering the Murkrow was extremely weak. But hey, Nick was the Trainer here, not me, and he knew what he was doing. I tucked my hands into my own pockets and kept my mouth shut.
    The Trainer threw the ball towards the Murkrow, and it hit the Dark-type on its hat-like crest. A red light temporarily illuminated the cellar as the Murkrow was transformed into glowing plasma. The plasma swirled downwards, into the open HyperBall. The sphere snapped shut and wiggled from side to side as it attempted to lock down with the Murkrow inside. After wiggling for a couple of seconds, the ball stilled.
    "Congratulations," I said to Nick as I walked over and picked up the ball. It was Ranger regulations to hold onto all captured Pokemon until the run ended. This was just in case the Trainer captured more than three Pokemon.
    I tucked the ball inside a side pocket of my pack and turned around to look at Nick. "Where to now?" I asked him. I wasn't sure there was too much more of interest in this cellar, but you never know. I had to admit, I was itching to get out into the open skies, though. I knew Broadblade was too - he had a couple new tricks up his sleeve that we both couldn't wait to try out.
    OOC: My bad. It won't happen again. ;x
    The Hyper Ball shook wildly to the left and right, and I was like a Slowpoke waiting for a Shellder’s bite; impatiently braced for the result of the capture. One more shake to the right. Then a clicking noise—a sweet sound of internal mechanics and workings signifying that the capturing process was successful, and that I have, at last, caught my first Pokémon in my expedition here at the National Park. A red glow on the Hyper Ball’s center button blinked for the last time, and the weakened Murkrow finally gave in, allowing the ball to contain it inside.
    For a moment I thought the Hyper Ball would get teleported to my Regional Professor’s research facility or to some kind of storage system in the National Park. But then I remembered I was carrying only three of my Pokéballs (I had to leave the other tree prior to my entry as Park rules required me to do). Chainy then neared the Pokéball and picked it up, as it was also regulations for the Ranger to carry the Pokéballs of the Pokémon I’ve caught.
    The Pokémon inside the green ball Chainy held would soon be a part of my journey, and I can not wait until we train together as I help it be the best Pokémon it could be, likewise I always learn from my Pokémon that also helps me to become a better person.
    Melisand did not let the battle exhaust her that much—she even let out a sweet cry in response to my success at capturing the Murkrow (who I plan on calling Orzhov or something similar to that).
    “Kiss, toge-toge! Togekiss!”
    The Ranger with the black overcoat then asked me where we should head on next, at the same time mentioning something about going airborne to search for Pokémon. I did not think he knew that he was thinking the last part out loud, and when he did notice, Chainy reminded me that it was still my choice. But I understood him—as a trainer of the Flying-type I very well knew that feeling—like the skies were calling onto you, gently whispering orders to ride its different winds, offering you a chance to leave and break the chains that tie you to the earthen soil and experience the wonders of flight. I too was overcome by this feeling, and I decided to go with it and search for Pokémon in the skies.
    “Again, it’s still your call, Nick.” Chainy mentioned.
    “It’s all right,” I told him happily. “I was going to suggest the same thing anyways.”
    I turned to Melisand and asked if the Togekiss if she was up to flying with me. The key thing in flying with Pokémon is making sure that both the rider and Pokémon is enjoying it, otherwise it would not really be a fun experience at all. Thankfully, Melisand did not deny the offer to spread her wings.
    “That’s settled then. Let’s take to the skies!
    For convenience’s sake I recalled back my Togekiss into her Great Ball. It was then that I remembered the phantasmal light that still shined above us. Chainy called out for his Dusknoir, Specialle, before we left the cellar. The Gripper Pokémon then emerged from one of the larger wine barrels on one of the corners of the storage room. I was slightly shocked when she did this, because even for a dark-loving person such as me it wasn’t everyday that I get to see a ghost with an ominous figure come out from out of nowhere, especially from a wooden barrel. The three of us made our way out of the basement, and back to the unfinished hotel’s floor, where I battled a Rufflet earlier. Chainy returned the Dusknoir back into its Pokéball, as I asked him if the small clearing north of our current position was any good of a take-off point. He replied with a yes, and not long after we reached the said clearing.
    I got Melisand’s ball and clicked on it, releasing her from the blue-colored sphere. As usual, she entered with extreme elegance. I held a saddle in my hand along with short reins to be attached to the Togekiss’ back. These did not do her any harm or any discomfort, for if they had I would not even think on using them. I put the saddle and the reins, and hopped onto the ovaloid Pokémon. I clipped my Poképlayer on a ring on the side of the saddle, and inserted a Voice Disk that I got from my bag. The Poképlayer started playing a scale of steely cries.
    “Skar-mo-ry!” the Poképlayer went, playing Skarmory calls over and over.
    I waited for Chainy to select his Pokémon, although I’m guessing he will be using his Staraptor like earlier.
    I looked around the clearing before we got up in the air, just to make sure if the Poképlayer had already attracted something.
    Ranger Chainy
    OOC: Hey man, don't take offense, but you're controlling me just a little too much.
    ~~~~~

    My desire to get out into the open sky must have been conveyed to Nick, because he decided to leave the cellar. He asked his Togekiss if it was up to some flying, which of course was a silly question - Flying types were almost always up to a good flight.

    As we turned to leave, I called out for Specialle and she emerged from one of the wine barrels. She'd probably been having a nice little draught of the stored alcohol. That didn't bother me though, I often snuck beer in on my runs. I usually got told off by Ivy too, but screw her, she isn't the boss of me.

    Specialle returned to her PokeBall, and as she did the werelight that was flickering above us faded out of existence, shooting out a bunch of red sparks as if it was farewelling us. We left the cellar, and I made sure to shut the door behind us. Just like in all nature reserves, visitors were supposed to leave everything the way they found it.

    We moved to a small clearing just outside the incomplete hotel, and Nick resummoned his Togekiss. He pulled a small lightweight saddle out of his pack, which was interesting - I'd never seen a trainer utilize a saddle on a Flying Pokemon before. It was a good idea, but I couldn't be bothered hunting down a suitable one. Besides, I'd spent a lot of time practicing flight and dismounting and I didn't want that to go to waste.

    I followed Nick's lead, releasing Staraptor. The large bird screeched a greeting and lowered his left wing and haunch, allowing me to climb up onto his back. I scratched behind his neck - we'd save the surprise for later.

    Nick swapped the disks in his Pokeplayer, and it started playing the metallic ringing screech of a Skarmory. They were one of the more common targets for Trainers that came to the Outer Heaven. They had a rare typing and were great at taking physical hits, and a Skarmory would be a valuable addition to Nick's team, especially considering he was a Flying Pokemon Trainer.

    Before we took off, I heard a small tinkling noise, and I looked behind me. A small white Pokemon with a bulbous body was flying over from behind the hotel, looking curiously up at Melisand.

    "I don't suppose you want to battle this Togetic?" I asked Nick.

    OOC: i'll try to post quicker :L

    Before we got the chance to really get up into the air, my Poképlayer attracted a Pokémon. However, it lured not a Skarmory but a dainty Togetic. Chainy asked me then if I wanted to capture the Happiness Pokémon, and to this I replied sincerely:

    “I could remember the time I caught Melisand—she was still a Togetic like this Pokémon right here. I admire these incredibly pulchritudinous beasts, but I also respect them. They’re a rare lot, and it is extremely rare to see them in the wild, and this is exactly why I’ll leave it alone. It doesn’t really look like it wants to battle anyway.”

    The Ranger nodded, as I got a Pokédoll from my backpack. The Pokédoll was still in its inactive state, having the appearance of a baby Rhyhorn with green coloration. I threw the doll towards the white Pokémon. The Togetic seemed to be frightened slightly when the doll landed near it. The Pokédoll then transformed into a miniature plush Togetic, which caught the wild Pokémon’s attention. It grabbed the decoy, and flew away with it. Within seconds, the Pokémon vanished, living up to its truly elusive nature.

    “That took care of that,” I thought.

    It was finally time to soar up into the sky. I waited for Chainy to take the lead, as I’m not familiar with the sky here. Every place has a different feel to it when you fly in its skies, and I wouldn’t want to get lost.

    OOC: Don't worry about it dude, as you can see I'm not on top of my game atm xD

    I couldn't keep my right eyebrow from raising slightly - apparently my Trainer was a little bit wordy. I pushed it back down with sheer force of will and watched as he pulled out a PokeDoll - pre-bought from the store, apparently. He threw it towards the Togetic, which instinctively recoiled away from the incoming missile. When it landed it was the shape of the Togetic. The small white Pokemon quickly reached out and snatched the plush toy before flitting away along the ground towards the hotel. It was only a few seconds before I lost sight of it completely, even with my enhanced vision sensors and motion trackers.

    I shrugged and mounted Broadblade by climbing up his back feathers. I settled into the curve of his body behind his wings and held onto the tufts of feathers just behind and below his eyes. He flapped his wings twice and jumped into the air using his powerful legs. We shot off into the blue skies, followed closely by Nick and Melisand. We were just about to fly off when a small bird made a beeline for us up from the ground. It was black and gray and did not look happy. It began circling us quickly, squawking outrageously.

    "I don't suppose you want to battle this Tranquill?" I called across to Nick. Thankfully, the winds weren't that strong - he would be able to hear me clearly.

    @Chainy: I finally posted! :O

    ~~~~
    It was not long until another Pokémon appeared in front of us. It's plumage was a variety of grays and blacks. It looked like a larger, more sophisticated Pidove.
    "I don't suppose you want to battle this Tranquill?" The Ranger asked me while we rode on a cool gale.
    The gale wasn't really that strong, so I could hear Chainy's voice quite clearly.
    I clicked my Pokédex on, and it began scanning the Tranquill:
    [Tranquill, the Wild Pigeon Pokémon, and the evolved form of Pidove. It is believed that a peaceful place without conflict exists deep in the forest where Tranquill live.]
    "I think I'll pass on this one," I replied to him. "Although quite an interesting flying type I didn't come here to catch common Pokémon. And like with that Togetic, I think this guy is peace-loving."
    I told Chainy that I'd like to move on, so I rummaged in my back as fast as I could and retrieved a Pokédoll. I threw it right at the Pigeon Pokémon, who caught the stuffed doll in its yellow beak. As the Tranquill examined the Pokédoll I clicked my Poképlayer on, remembering it still had that Skarmory disk inside it. I was ready to move on and explore the Outer Heaven's splendid horizon.
    Nick pulled out his Pokedex and scanned the Tranquil. I couldn't hear what the little device said, but no doubt it was providing valuable information to the young Trainer. I knew it all off by heart, though - Tranquil wasn't particularly special, although it had access to the Roost ability naturally, making it a hard-to-defeat threat.
    "I think I'll pass on this one," Nick called out. "Although quite an interesting flying type I didn't come here to catch common Pokémon. And like with that Togetic, I think this guy is peace-loving."
    I raised an eyebrow as I looked at the ferociously squawking Tranquill. It certainly wasn't tranquil at all. Nick threw a Nidorino-shaped PokeDoll up towards the bird, and it catch the plush toy deftly in its beak before soaring away towards the dilapidated hotel. I smiled and picked a random direction. I nudged Broadblade and pointed towards a cluster of mountain peaks in the distance, and we began to fly towards them. I turned around to see Nick close behind me, riding his Togekiss. Good.
    I looked ahead at one of the closer spires. Nestled in an alcove near the very tip was a small bird. It's eyes were closed - it was probably asleep, enjoying the morning sun. It was multicoloured, except for its head, which was black and in the shape of a music note. I pulled back so that I was flying abreast with Nick and Melisand.
    "Wanna battle the Chatot that's up ahead?" I yelled over the winds.
    I was hoping to put something along the lines of "SORREH I WAS AWAY", but Google gave me this so It will have to do. xD
    "Wanna battle the Chatot that's up ahead?" Ranger Chainy yelled.
    I looked at the nearest rock-spire and saw the Music Note Pokémon has just awoken from its sleep.
    The parakeet-like flying Pokémon flapped its wings repeatedly as it came before us. It's crest was in the shape of a musical note, and it had a varied plumage of blues and greens. It had a small beak, and began crying out incessantly.
    "Chat-chat, chatot chatot!" the Pokémon squawked.
    Chatot wasn't a new kind of Pokémon to me. I encountered an orchestra--that's what people here call a flock of them-- and it wasn't pleasant to say the least. I have a passion for flying-type Pokémon, but Chatot just seem to annoy something in me.
    I grabbed tighter over the brown reins I placed on Melisand's back, and said, "Nah, I never had good memories with a Chatot, and I don't think this one would be an exception. I think I'll pass on this one too."
    And without further thought I grabbed a plush Pokédoll from my backpack and threw it at the Chatot. In some way unknown to me, the green dinosaur shape of the doll morphed into semblance with the Chatot, who caught the doll perfectly in its yellow talons. I waited for it to leave, and pressed the button on my Poképlayer. I still have my hopes on that Skarmory.
    OOC: You're fine, it's good to have you back ^^
    ~~~~~

    We flew towards the Chatot and circled it for a while as Nick decided what to do. It squawked up at us, trying to sing a song of some sort. I couldn't recognise it, but gun to my head, I would have said it was the main chorus of Funkytown.

    "Nah, I never had good memories with a Chatot, and I don't think this one would be an exception. I think I'll pass on this one too," Nick finally said. He threw a Chatot-shaped doll down towards the bird in its nest. However, the bird didn't seem to want it - it hit the doll with its wing and the plush toy sailed back up to us. I caught it and shrugged before tossing it over to Nick.

    We flew past the Chatot, towards the mountain peaks in the distance. They were wreathed with white fluffy clouds and made for a majestic sight. I preferred it when the sun was just rising, but it was beautiful nonetheless.

    A screech jarred me physically, and I looked upwards, in the direction of the sound. A big black-and-gray bird was flying above us, watching us closely. Its red crest flapped back and forth in the breeze, which confirmed its identity - it was a Staraptor.

    "I don't suppose you want to battle that?" I asked, jabbing my thumb upwards.

    We heard a loud screeching from above, sounding like a squawk of some sort. I looked upwards, where I thought I heard the sound, my Ranger doing the same, and there it was—flying in midair was the hawk-like figure of one rather proud Staraptor. Having some knowledge on this kind of bird Pokémon already, I didn’t have to pull out my Pokédex to remember that Staraptor were known for being aggressive, and to a certain point, territorial. I saw its scarlet eyes looking at me and Melisand, which I didn’t take as a good sign—Melisand didn’t either; I felt her down shiver in uneasiness.

    "I don't suppose you want to battle that?" Chainy asked me, referring to the Predator Pokémon that was flying above us.

    To be honest, I wouldn’t usually back down from a Staraptor. This particular one, however, looked fiercer than the average Staraptor I’ve come across on my journeys. I didn’t want to risk my Pokémon’s health this early on the run, so I decided against battling it. Besides, the reason for my visit to the National Park was to catch rare Pokémon, and although Staraptor were solitary creatures the fact remains that their most basic form, Starly, happens to be quite a common sight in any open forest or woodland.

    I got another Pokédoll from my ever-useful backpack, held it in one hand, and told my ranger that I did not wish to battle the wild bird. Before I threw the plush toy that was my means of fleeing the Pokémon, I looked at the Staraptor’s talons. How many seconds would it take for that bird to rip this thing to shreds? With that impressive beak and sharp hooks for talons I wouldn’t say it would take too long...

    I didn’t have to ponder over that matter any longer, because I would soon find out the answer,that is, if the Staraptor would even take notice of the decoy. I wasted no time and threw the plushie above, aiming for the Predator Pokémon.

    OOC: No doll necessary ^^

    ~~~~~
    Nick looked up at the bird and I could tell what he was thinking. Not many people chose to face down a pissed-off Staraptor. Still, when he reached for a doll, I called for him to stop. I had spent a lot of time around Broadblade, so I knew the behavioural tics of Staraptors. This one wasn't actually being aggressive, it was just defending its territory. If we moved away, we wouldn't need to battle it. I whistled sharply, grabbing Melisand's attention, and we coasted away from the angry Staraptor. I turned to see if I was right, and thankfully I was. The bird has also turned around and was heading away.
    A couple seconds later I heard one last Skarmory screech emanate from Nick's PokePlayer before dying out. I sighed in sympathy - with the Voice Disk out of charge, there was very little chance that Nick would find one of the Steel-types today. Still, that didn't mean he couldn't leave with a nice haul.
    I looked around and saw a craggy peak that looked promising. I pointed to it and both of the Flying-types headed towards it. Suddenly, something happened that nearly made me fall off Broadblade's back. A huge purple Pokemon phased out of the rock face and flew towards us, making a deep crooning sound. I hadn't expected to see one of these as they were pretty rare.
    I guided Broadblade closer to Melisand with my knees. "Interested in trying to catch a Drifblim?" I yelled over to Nick.
    OOC: DRIFBLIM! :O Female please :D
    ~~~~

    So much for learning the answer--just as I was at an attempt to get and throw a Pokédoll at the Predator Pokémon, my Ranger stopped me. It was then that I remembered that Chainy was flying on his own Staraptor. It must be that Chainy has been through a lot with Broadblade--he was able to interpret the wild Staraptor's true emotions. What I have misjudged as being aggressive was merely an act of defense; we have wandered into the bird Pokémon's territory. Chainy then whistled at Melisand, who got the signal. With no further intention on staying any longer, we flew away from the Staraptor.

    I wondered which Pokémon I would encounter next. I pushed a button from my Poképlayer, the CD labeled "Skarmory" was still inserted in it, and we heard the Pokémon's cry once again; a shrill, almost mechanical screeching came from the device, only this time it was going faint on the last note.

    "Oh well, there goes the last charge for that Voice Disk," I said, clinging to a dying hope that the Steel Pokémon would soon appear.

    Chainy then pointed to a craggy peak, and we headed towards this land form. The peak was deep in earthen-clay, and when we were just close enough to inspect it for Pokémon, a sudden apparition came out of nowhere. Chainy and I couldn’t help but get a bit startled when the figure flew towards us; I only saw a flash of purple at first, but when I focused my gaze on the object I realized it wasn’t an object at all! It was a Pokémon, a Drifblim to be exact.

    The Drifblim gave off a strange sound as if trying to talk to us. I haven’t encountered this Pokémon before—not even in battles with other trainers. This got me excited, and all thoughts of Skarmory were soon replaced with the determination to catch the ghostly Pokémon floating before us. Inside, I felt awestruck at the Pokémon; it might just be me but the Drifblim exuded a sense of regality. The Drifblim had a wonderfully lustrous violet coat, and the tuft of cloud on its head was like a perfect white crown. And those mysterious, red eyes...

    Riding on the magnificent Broadblade, Chainy flew closer to where Melisand and I were, and asked me if I was interested in trying to catch the Pokémon. I shook off my gaze from the ghost Pokémon’s ruby-tinged eyes and gave him an answer.

    “Well there’s trying,” I began, an air of confidence surfaced from my gut, “but then there’s succeeding. I plan on aiming for the latter.”

    That was what I had said to Chainy, but even my inside self knows that was out of character. Where was all this confidence coming from? I haven’t felt this determined ever since my gym battle with a fighting-type Leader who, oddly enough, resembled the very person who’s guiding me through my first run at the National Park. There was something very strange with the surrounding, I could feel it—I just don’t know where all of it was coming from.

    I tried to hold back the strange felling within me, because I didn’t want to get overconfident, do things hastily, and end up screwing up my chances of capturing the Drifblim. So I decided to keep myself clear-headed and check the Blimp Pokémon on my Pokédex. I retrieved the device from one of my pockets and opened it to scan the drifting Pokémon. It was a good thing Pokédexes still work even on this altitude.

    [Drifblim, the Blimp Pokémon and the evolved form of Drifloon. Because it travels on wind currents, Drifblim's movements are unusual and unpredictable. It can generate and release gas within its body. That's how it can control the altitude of its drift.]

    So this Pokémon manipulates air currents to move? This could be a tricky battle then, but it’s going to be worth it when I add the ghost-flying type to my team. I knew I had to catch it first though. I resolved to use Melisand, the Togekiss I was currently riding on, for this battle. It would be dangerous if I battled using Melisand while I was still on her, so I unfastened my saddle strap (without forgetting to hold on to Melisand of course) and then swiped from my belt a black-and-white Pokéball. The black-half of the ball was also decorated with yellow stripes, and was noticeably labeled with the inscription ‘Hicarus.’

    I clicked the Ultra Ball and released my Dragonite from it—a red flash came from inside the ball, quickly taking the shape and soon taking the solid form of the Dragon Pokémon. It’s not that I’m bragging or anything, but Hicarus just looked marvelous. On the few times I’ve entered Pokémon Contests so far in my journey, she was always my first choice to use—and I swear that the constant grooming I gave the Dragonite made her scales shine in different colors under some kinds of light.

    I looked at Hicarus and told her, “I’m going to be flying with you now. Melisand will be taking on this Drifblim.”

    Kai-ri-ryuu,” the Dragonite responded positively.

    I got off of my Togekiss’ back and got on the large, orange dragon Pokémon. It was a different experience from Melisand’s soft, feathery down—flying on Hicarus felt like riding on a pile of leather. I wasn’t worried of falling of Hicarus; even if her scales were a bit slippery they were formed into scutes which helped maintain my position.

    I heard the Drifblim’s strange crooning once again, which sounded like it was chanting something, as Melisand and I exchanged looks. “Are you ready to get us another friend?”

    “Togekiss, toge!” Melisand nodded and responded with her hymn-like voice.

    “Remember, this Pokémon will most likely use the wind currents to its advantage to avoid you,” I reminded the Jubilee Pokémon. “But I know that, with your gracefulness in battle, you’ll be able to keep up with it. I’m counting on you, Melisand!”

    At this the Togekiss flew to level with the Blim Pokémon.

    “Start things off with a Nasty Plot, and then try and follow it up with a Shadow Ball attack, okay?” I commanded her while riding on Hicarus.

    I know ‘Nasty Plot’ doesn’t seem to be the kind of thing a Pokémon such as Melisand would have. I wouldn’t have believed she would be able to perform or even learn the Dark-type move at first. Her gentle and bright disposition just seems to leave anything, well, nasty out of the picture. I can however, remember the day she did that move for the first time—the day she had evolved from being a Togetic.

    I had just won a double battle that morning, having used Scorne who was already a Houndoom then and Melisand, who was a cheery Togetic. To my surprise Melisand would not continue being a Togetic any longer, for at last, she has had enough experience to evolve into a Togekiss—I could tell because she was changing, glowing—and the final catalyst that would trigger the complete evolution was just in my backpack: a Shiny Stone I’ve won in Johto for a Bug-Catching Contest.

    I threw the stone at her; the bright glowing form of Melisand caught it, and then in a great dazzling display she had evolved—wings and all—into the Togekiss she is today.

    But then something happened, something that was the cause of her learning the dark-type move I’ve just asked her to perform in the present: Scorne, who was also witness to the evolution of Melisand, suddenly went berserk and aimed a Crunch at the newly evolved flying Pokémon. Before I was able to command the Houndoom to stop, Melisand had already dodged Scorne’s attempt. The Togekiss didn’t look like it was going to retaliate, but for the same reason Scorne had attacked her the first time, the Houndoom did it again—threatening the Togekiss with a Nasty Plot; letting out a howl that was darker than what was normal for him, while his eyes seemed as though they were burning in a haze of black and violet embers.

    Then it happened. Melisand did the same move. Something within the Togekiss’ being awakened, or it looked that way to me, when its aura changed from being cheery to down right sinister. Her expression was corrupted; the calmness to her eyes was replaced with something I dared to think was close to wickedness, and the red and blue feathers of her crest became enveloped in the same dark purple storm that befogged Scorne’s eyes.

    The first thought I had in mind was that Melisand had learned Mirror Move—that had to be it. Except, there was no indication that she had performed it—usually a Mirror Move would involve opening a magical portal from where the user would draw out the copied move, or in the case of other Pokémon, a glass-like glowing in their eyes before executing the opponent’s move. But Melisand did none of this, she just used Nasty Plot as the move itself… She would have had to do some sort of gesticulation with her wings if she was Metronoming the dark-type move, but no…

    Perhaps a miracle can happen twice in a day—the first was the evolution of Melisand, the second was the fact that Scorne backed down from the Togekiss. He retreated to my side; defeated at his own dark specialty. After this, though, the Jubilee Pokémon collapsed, and any traces of the Nasty Plot went out quickly as Melisand fainted flat on the ground.

    It took almost a week for her to recover at the PokéCenter. I told the nurse in charge of her what happened; about Scorne’s sudden attack and the Togekiss’ unprecedented change in character. But not even Nurse Joy was able to determine the causes of those two events. I, however, was the person responsible for the two Pokémon. I am their Trainer. It was my job to resolve this for the good of my Pokémon. It might have been a farfetched guess at that time, but I had thoughts on what probably caused the scene.

    I figured this idea when I scanned Melisand on my Pokédex for the first time. The device said that her species seldom go where there is strife, but it never really mentioned why. It also mentioned, in its mechanical, recorded voice, that it grants blessings to regions and people who are peace-loving and kind. And then it hit me—perhaps the reason why Togekiss do not go where there is strife and war is because they induce more of the same? Was it not right to also think that they granted the opposite of blessings to places where hatred is common? And where else would Melisand find a place where hatred for others resides everywhere but the heart of my Houndoom? He was, after all, orphaned as a Houndour… Karen, part of the Johto Elite Four who gave me Scorne as my starter told me that his parents died when poachers mercilessly slaughtered the Houndoom for their precious bone. If the master of the Dark Type hadn’t been there to save Scorne at that time, then I would have probably ended up starting my journey with a Chikorita, a Cyndaquil, or a Totodile…

    I could have been getting paranoid with the matter, but I cared for my Pokémon. I gave up thinking too much about the whole thing and just practiced with Melisand when she had recovered, and on training Scorne to be at peace with the Jubilee Pokémon. It was a hard month’s worth of training, but it paid off when Togekiss was able to perform Nasty Plot without going all ‘supreme queen of doom’ and then getting knocked out cold. She was able to master the move eventually, as did Scorne and his conflicts with the Jubilee Pokémon, although I can’t say the two of them would ever be the same again.

    I’m confident that Melisand won’t go overboard with Nasty Plot this time. I watched just as Chainy did and waited for the Togekiss to perform the Nasty Plot and Shadow Ball combo, while keeping an eye on the Driblim’s movements as well.

    OOC: Wasn't entirely sure if you'd want this lol.

    ~~~~~
    “Well there’s trying, but then there’s succeeding. I plan on aiming for the latter,” Nick called to me. I grinned openly - that was the kind of confidence I loved to see.
    There was a flash of bright light, and I saw a Dragonite appear alongside Melisand. I thought Nick was going to battle using the powerful Dragon-type - it'd be more than a match for the Drifblim - but this theory was dispelled when he jumped from Melisand onto the Dragonite. That meant he must be planning on using the Togekiss. This was an interesting double-ended choice: by using a Normal-type, the Drifblim's STAB Ghost attacks wouldn't have any effect. However, Melisand's powerful Normal-type attacks wouldn't affect the Drifblim either.
    “Remember, this Pokémon will most likely use the wind currents to its advantage to avoid you, but I know that with your gracefulness in battle you’ll be able to keep up with it. I’m counting on you, Melisand!” Nick yelled. “Start things off with a Nasty Plot, and then try and follow it up with a Shadow Ball attack, okay?"
    I watched as Melisand concentrated hard on coming up with a plan. It probably wasn't easy for a Togekiss to consider dirty under-handed tricks but this Drifblim wouldn't be easy to bring down. In fact, the Drifblim was performing a reinforcement move of its own. A thin white shield surrounded the large Ghost-type, and I could swear it was a little bit bigger than when we had first saw it, not that it wasn't already big enough.
    Melisand saw this too, and she decided it was time to attack. Black and purple blobs of energy faded into reality and moved towards each other, slowly coalescing into a sphere. The sphere was black with a gray outline, and purple mists swirled within. With a trilling cry, Melisand launched the Shadow Ball towards the Drifblim. The Drifblim was too busy preparing its shield to attempt to dodge, so the Shadow Ball struck the large Pokemon easily and exploded, throwing up a huge gray mist that vision couldn't permeate. Nothing happened for a couple of seconds, but then finally the Drifblim charged out of the haze, covered in black energy. It tackled Melisand, knocking her backwards. It took the Togekiss a good ten seconds to recover control of her flight, but when she did she soared effortlessly back up to the battle.
    OOC: Might as well have a substitute for Skarmory while I’m here, lol. Plus, Drifblim’s cute :3
    ~~~

    My Togekiss clearly was focusing on the Nasty Plot; her concentrated expression was proof of this. While Melisand was performing the first part of the move-combination I’ve ordered her, the Blimp Pokemon, Drifblim, was executing its move—I recognized it to be a Stockpile. A faint, niveous film acted as a shield and covered the whole of the floating Pokémon, which now appeared somewhat larger than before. Perhaps it was taking up air to increase its defenses? Could this be the manipulative air tactics my Pokédex warned me Driblim would try and do?

    If there was a good time for Melisand to release the Shadow Ball attack, this would be it. I didn’t doubt that she knew this too, and as soon as the Stockpile coated the ominous figure of the Drifblim, she released the Ghost type move—remember, Ghost type moves do well against Pokémon of the same type—the otherworldly globules of phantasmal energies forming into one dark sphere that looked somewhat unstable.

    “Toge-kiss!” Melisand let out a cry, releasing the Ghost-type move towards the Drifblim.

    I couldn’t help shout a ‘Yes!’ when the Shadow Ball landed square below the Drifblim’s X (or was that it’s mouth?)—it was apparently focusing on putting up its magical walls too much to even bother with an attempt to move away from Melisand’s attack. When the Shadow ball came into contact with the Ghost Pokémon it exploded into a purplish, gray haze. I was sure that the Drifblim had been damaged by the attack, but I also knew that this species of Pokémon are known for having extremely high health in battle.

    I might have let my guard down for a second or two (a grave mistake in most occasions) when nothing happened after the move’s collision, but just as quickly the large balloon of a Pokémon emerged from the smoke before it had cleared completely; wisps and streaks of dark energy covered its body—an obvious opposite to the white aura that shielded the Drifblim when it used Stockpile earlier. There can only be one type of attack that could register such a sinister aura…

    A dark-type move, I thought.

    The Drifblim charged for Melisand, knocked her off from her flying stance, and then seemed to bob away a few feet like a balloon does when it hits a wall or something else that’s solid. The majestic Jubilee Pokémon shook it off with ease, and regained her flight a few seconds later. That was a good sign that she wasn’t badly damaged by the Drifblim’s Payback attack, and even though she’s near the half-mark of her health I have enough faith in her that she’ll last the battle.

    “Nicely done, Melisand! Keep it up and we’ll have that Drifblim captured soon,” I told her, with my next plan of attack already in mind. “This time I want you to conjure up a Water Pulse attack.”

    The Togekiss nodded in confirmation. “And I want you to charge that move with your Hidden Power, all right?”

    Of course, I knew that Melisand’s Hidden Power was of the Electric-type, and I thought that infusing the two moves would do just enough on the Ghost-type Drifblim, which I didn’t forget was also part flying type—after all, I wouldn’t be trying to catch it if it wasn’t a flying-type Pokémon, unless it was a Dark-type of course.

    Now I just had to wait and see what would become of my orders, and what the Drifblim would do next. I could see the Togekiss beginning to cross her wings and began muttering something, like a tune from an unknown song; as blue droplets were forming from the tips of her white feathers. The droplets appeared to be suspended afloat in midair. Melisand re-crossed her wings again, and another form of energy began emerging from nowhere—this time, however, the sparks of energy were more of a bright, yellow color, emanating electrical charges once or twice per second.

    “Go for it, Melisand!” I told the Togekiss.

    Ryuu, Kai-ryu!” bellowed the Dragonite I was flying on; even Hicarus couldn’t help cheering on her closest companion on my Pokémon team.

    I was already imagining the would-be result of the move combination (if Melisand would be successful at it); a fusion of two opposing move-types, Water and Electric, together in a hazardous dance of volatile energies that could possibly prove dangerous for both its user and the target… I wasted no thought into thinking the attack would backfire. I mean, the possibility of it happening exists, I acknowledge that as any sensible trainer should, but I believe in Melisand—I believe in my Pokémon.

    The Togekiss nodded, and she started moving her wings around in strange circular motion. Droplets of water began to form around her - I assumed Melisand was drawing on the water moisture in the air as we were far, far above any potential water masses. It was taking a while, but the Togekiss was literally pulling water out of thin air.

    I noticed that the Drifblim had backed up a little bit, and I noticed there were small electrical sparks playing about the Ghost-type's head. All of the little sparks combined into a single strand, which whipped through the air towards Melisand. The beam wrapped around the bird and shocked her mercilessly, but she refused to stop charging her attack, so the Drifblim pulled the whip back with its ghostly arms. The crackling energy didn't seem to hurt the Flying-type; rather, it looked like the Jubilee Pokemon was being empowered by the move.

    Once there was a decent amount of water surrounding Melisand, her stance changed, to one that was much stronger. She crossed her wings in-between flaps, and small yellow orbs started to surround her. They discharged electrical sparks into the water, and it was fascinating to watch the yellow jets swim around in the water like fish. As the water filled up with more and more electricity, the orbs grew smaller, like they were injecting their self into the liquid. I smiled as I heard Nick's Dragonite bellow, obviously some kind of cheer. It was good for Pokemon to have inter-team bonds.

    Finally, the combo attack was ready. Melisand pushed the construct towards the Drifblim, and the attack gained speed geometrically as it moved. The Drifblim's movements may be erratic, but they weren't fast, and it wasn't able to dodge. It was soaked by the water, and then electrocuted by the many wriggling electric darts.

    Still, this wasn't nearly enough to beat the Ghost-type into submission. It expanded once more before releasing a light blue mist. The mist started moving slowly towards Melisand, but unlike the Drifblim it looked like Melisand might have a chance to dodge this attack. If Nick moved fast enough.

    OOC: Yeah, this post isn't my best. I feel like I was going in circles in the last few paragraphs, but :x

    ~~~~
    I watched quite intensely, hands firmly gripped on Hicarus, while the white, oval-shaped Jubilee Pokémon loaded up the Water Pulse and the Hidden Power. She had done this attack combination before, only as an appeal combo during the first round of a contest we entered during our brief visit in the Hoenn Region. It did well as the judges said in their commentary, although we didn’t win first place in the final elimination round. I was confident, though, that Melisand would also execute the move well offensive-wise.
    Then, I watched the Drifblim moving strangely; its long purple arms eerily drifting in the wind. Quickly, I took out my Pokédex; the device’s steel-red coloration shined when a ray of sunlight hit it square on the screen. The wild Drifblim was taking advantage of the momentary pause Melisand was required to take before releasing the dual-move combination. Neither Water Pulse nor Hidden Power normally required loading—it wasn’t like the grass type move SolarBeam or a flying-type Sky Attack—but when used together, I understood it took more effort and put the Togekiss in more strain han when she would be in if she would fire the attacks individually, so it was understandable. The combination theoretically would deal more damage compared to singular attacks.
    By the time Melisand was almost ready to launch the move combination I commanded her to perform, the Drifblim began chanting, if you would call the weird humming sound it made that way. Similar particles of light energy began to form on the cloud on top of the Drifblim’s elliptical body. Then the particles all came together, converging as if magnetically attracted to one another, and when I noticed this I immediately pushed a rectangular, blue button on my Pokédex.
    I had punched in the move-scan function of the device; which I had the Silph Corporation back in the Kanto Region install in the Pokédex. It proved handy enough to me for a number of times in the past, although I only relied on the function when I was unfamiliar with the move the Pokémon I was facing was using. In a split second the Pokédex scanned the Drifblim, and its mechanical, robotic voice uttered,
    [Charge Beam. Electric-type move. The user fires a concentrated bundle of electricity. It may also raise the user’s Sp. Atk stat.]
    It was all happening so fast; I tried to concentrate as much as I could on the battle. Feeling doubt would make your Pokémon doubt themselves too, and as Togekiss were adept in reading others’ emotions, especially their trainer’s, I took a deep breath and focused on the situation at hand: by this time the Charge Beam was a mere inch-length away from the Togekiss.
    She could have still dodged it—her prowess and grace in battle allowed Melisand to dodge even the closest encounter—but it would risk throwing off the move combination. In Pokémon battles, sacrifices, to a certain, reasonable point, have to be made. Melisand knew that well, too. So, as much as I hated having my Pokémon taking damage from attacks, let alone with moves that would hit them twice as hard, I didn’t order her to dodge the Charge Beam.
    The electric type move the Drifblim had released struck the Togekiss like a coil of pure electrical energy. A golden aura enveloped it for some seconds. I knew that its Special Attack had increased because of the move, as the Pokédex had said just a few seconds ago.
    “Melisand, hold your ground!” I exclaimed. “You can take that in!”
    And thankfully, the bird-like Pokémon didn’t seem to be as damaged or hurt; she merely shook of the Charge Beam. I could tell she was still over the half-mark of her health, but she’ll be in the yellow soon. My Dragonite and I were relieved to see Melisand all right, and that she had kept the combination up. The Drifblim seemed to notice her resilience and surprisingly retracted the electrical strand back with its phantasmal appendages.
    Hicarus, the Dragonite I was currently flying on, gave another bellowing cheer. The Hidden Power was the first to be completed, and seconds later, when Melisand had changed her aerial pose, the Togekiss had finally conjured the river-blue orb of the Water Pulse.
    “Toge—kiss!!!”
    She released the Water Pulse attack; the circular energy orbs of the electric Hidden Power enveloping the water move in a coat of sparking waves. The Togekiss volleyed the water and electric combo, aiming for where the Drifblim was ominously floating. The mass of energy accelerated as it neared its target. Fwoosh! The attack had hit the Blim Pokémon, that was apparently unable to dodge the combination. It drenched it in a large splash of cool water, before shocking it with repeated currents given off by the Hidden Power.
    Hicarus was quicker than I was to cheer for Melisand when it was quite clear that the move combination was a success. I knew, however, that it was still a long way to go before we could bring the ghost Pokémon down to optimum capturing health.
    “Blim… Drif-Drifblim…” the Blimp Pokémon moaned as it managed to stay afloat after getting hit by Melisand’s Water Pulse and Hidden Power combination.
    I really wanted to capture the mysterious Blimp Pokémon. I was fascinated—entranced with its otherworldly nature that I just had to add it to my team…
    Abruptly, my Pokédex spoke again with its mechanical voice. I had forgotten I was still holding it out and had set it to the move-scan option.
    [Icy Wind. Ice-type move. The user attacks with a gust of chilled air. It also lowers the target’s Speed stat.]
    I regained focus when I figured out why the device notified me of an Ice attack—an ethereal, light blue mist was snaking its way out of the Driblim’s mouth and was heading, albeit rather slowly, for Melisand.
    Like the Pokédex said, getting hit by that move will slow my Togekiss down. I knew she could potentially dodge it this time, if both of us reacted quickly.
    “Zephyrus! Air Slash!” I shouted to Melisand instantly and reflexively. I didn’t need to look at Chainy’s expression to know he was confused with the command I had just ordered the Togekiss.
    It was like this. On my journey with my Pokémon so far, I’ve met a lot of different people, the most memorable were the ones who have influenced me and my battling style. One such person was a trainer I’ve met a few months back. He also trained flying-type Pokémon and was an expert at aerial battling. I knew him by the name of Eric. You could say he was pretty much like a mentor to me. And the biggest thing he’s taught me was to have an effective—and efficient—way of communication when in battle, especially for times that needed quick action on both the part of the trainer and the Pokémon.
    Learning from Eric’s example I have devised a quick way of telling Melisand how to dodge. According to mythology, there are four main embodiments of the wind: Boreas, Notus, Zephyrus and Eurus. Each represented a breeze for each of the cardinal directions.
    Melisand and I have trained hard on perfecting a system such as this—whenever I would command her with one of the names of the four winds she understood it as an order to dodge, using Extremespeed specifically. The name of the wind I order her with dictates the direction I wanted her to go to evade an oncoming attack. Since Zephyrus was the embodiment of the West Wind, it meant that she would use Extremespeed to evade the attack in a western direction. Often times I would also command her to use a follow-up attack if she managed to dart out successfully, which I would mention after saying one of the winds’ names, like I did currently with Air Slash.
    It wasn’t practical to command Melisand with some thing like, “Dodge it westwards by using Extremespeed and then use Air Slash afterwards if your dodging attempt was successful.” Nope, that just didn’t do it, especially during moments that needed quick action.
    And so, as I learned from Eric, it was an advantage to have special commands you can give your Pokémon with. It could also throw off an opposing trainer.
    Presently, I saw a glint of understanding in my Togekiss’ eyes. She understood the command and readied herself to avoid the Icy Wind.
    OOC: Seemed fine to me. Also you get mega ultra bonus points for referring to Greek mythology.
    I didn't think that I'd be able to hear Nick's next command over the rushing of the wind and his Dragonite's enthusiastic cheering, but I did. Or at least, I thought I did. What I actually heard made no sense.
    "Zephyrus, Air Slash!" the young Trainer yelled. I scratched my head, sure that it was some kind of mistake, but the command must have meant something to Melisand because she suddenly blurred off to her right. The Icy Wind attack curved to follow her - my previous experiences told me that Ice-type attacks usually had some kind of rudimentary homing ability - but the Togekiss moved too far and too fast. The icy cloud lost track of its target and floated harmlessly past Hicarus before disintegrating into particles.
    Melisand didn't waste any time checking on the success (or lack thereof) of her attempted escape. She brought her wing slashing down like a sword towards the Drifblim, and a wave of compressed air moved incredibly quickly towards the Ghost-type. Unfortunately for Nick, the Drifblim must have been expecting this. A white fluffy shield that looked a little like cotton exploded outwards from the Drifblim's bulbous body. Melisand's Air Slash cut deep into the protective armour, but I don't think it got the whole way through. The armour certainly looked a bit less fluffy and a lot more transparent, but it was definitely still there.
    Suddenly, the Drifblim started to contract. It looked like the huge Pokemon was being sucked into a black hole. The whole disappearance took less than seven seconds. All of us looked around, confused. Had the Drifblim run away?
    A full half a minute later, the Drifblim re-emerged. It exploded out of nothingness right next to Melisand, and the Togekiss was too shocked to respond. One of the Drifblim's long wavy hands slapped Melisand downwards with uncharacteristic force, sending the Normal-type tumbling towards the lower carpet of clouds. Melisand was able to recover her trajectory, thankfully, but it looked like the Drifblim was rallying. Nick would have to be real careful if he wanted to stop the Ghost-type snowballing.
    OOC: Sorry this post took so long, I was trying to reach 12k :x
    ~~~~

    My name is Nick Magnum, and I am a Pokémon trainer who specializes in dark and/or flying-type Pokémon. I am currently inside a National Park, miles away from my home region of Johto, which was open to trainers who were attempting to expand their team, and this was precisely why I came here. According to the park’s regulations I was only allowed three of my Pok
    émon to accompany me through the entire expedition, so I chose my starter Pokémon, Scorne, who was a Houndoom, Melisand, my Togekiss, and my brave-hearted Dragonite named Hicarus. It was my first time inside the National Park, so I chose the three Pokémon I’ve trained with the most, although I made it sure that my bond with all my other Pokémon were equally as strong and solid.

    Also accompanying me through my first ever run at the National Park was a Pokémon Ranger, or rather, Elite Ranger as his shiny badge branded him, although he was pretty modest about it when I took notice of his title the first time the two of us met. The location I’ve selected for my run was a place called the Outer Heavens—it was a quaint place filled with tall rock pillars and mountainous and hilly regions—this was the perfect habitat for flying-type Pokémon. I was completely sure the Rangers and anyone else who was in charge of the Park wouldn’t let the place go to ruin, ahem, it was just so solemn in its way and the environment was just so picturesque. The Outer Heavens had a serene sense of beauty to it that I knew that this won’t be my last visit here.

    A place so wonderful such as this just can’t be closed off or suddenly collapse or whatever. It was the haven for flying type Pokémon and it needed to be preserved so that other trainers would be able to experience its cool breezes and grand sceneries. Especially because most flying Pokémon, especially the avian-like ones, would have a hard time if they got relocated to some other place, even if they could nest in the trees of in the woods or something. It would disrupt their connection with familiar surroundings, and quite possibly affect some of the flying Pokémon’s migration patterns.

    So far the frequency of my meetings with flying-type Pokémon didn’t fall short of my expectations. Although I do not think I’ll be encountering a Skarmory, a steel and flying-type Pokémon which was one of my primary targets for entering the Outer Heavens, I’ve had my fair share of interesting encounters during the time I’ve been inside the park:

    My very first encounter was with a young Rufflet. It was very feisty for such a young Pokémon, so I helped it hone its skills by battling it. It didn’t even seem to be intimidated by Scorne at first, and that took a lot of courage for a fledgling Rufflet since my Houndoom was pretty much the embodiment of fear, in a sense. My next Pokémon encounter excited the Pokémon collector in me. A Murkrow, which was the very first thing on my capture list, wandered before me. It was perfect—a combination of my two favorite types, dark and flying. I didn’t waste any time trying to battle it, and thankfully I had it caught in a Hyper Ball. Of course, it was under Park rules to surrender the Hyper Ball I caught the Murkrow in to my Ranger.

    By that time, Chainy—that was the name of my Ranger—and I decided it would be best to take the run to the skies. The Pokémon Ranger flew on his Staraptor, and I did so with Melisand, my Togekiss. Our first few encounters were nothing really exciting, but were still pretty interesting nonetheless. I encountered a Togetic, the wild-pigeon form of a Tranquill, a Chatot with vibrant plumage, and an aggressive Staraptor which resembled my Ranger’s aerial companion.

    The next encounter, however, turned out to be, for a lack of a better term, just plain awesome. The large, ovaloid form of a Drifblim came out of nowhere, and I decided to use Melisand to battle it with, so I had to call out Hicarus the Dragonite to fly on. If I’m not going to get a chance to battle a Skarmory while I’m here, I’m surely going to try my best to capture this Blimp Pokémon.

    I had just ordered the vaguely avian Pokémon with the egg-shaped body, which was my Togekiss, to dodge the wild Drifblim’s last attack with a special form of command we have trained hard to develop.

    “Zephyrus! Air Slash!” I had just yelled for the command a moment ago, and I knew Melisand understood.

    Quite abruptly, the trademark red and blue triangle patterns on the Togekiss’ underbelly blurred into nothingness, while a clear aura swiftly surrounded her body. The avian Pokémon darted off to her right quickly. It almost looked as if Melisand would vanish in thin air if she went faster; although I don’t think she could do anything more to surpass her already impressive speed. It all happened so fast that I don’t think my Pokédex, which was still on its move-scan feature, could have detected the ExtremeSpeed.

    The chilling attack that was Drifblim’s last move, Icy Wind, changed its direction to follow my Togekiss. However, Melisand was able to move away fast and far enough that the Ice-type attack failed to reach her and just collapsed in a shower of light-blue slush before completely dissolving in the air. Once again, our special quick-response command system had been proven to be effective, or so I thought.

    Without taking a pause Melisand turned back and performed a powerful Air Slash; the light blue streaks of energy spiraling all over her confirmed she was using the move. As if bringing down an axe she brought one of her great, white wings down. Her movement was just so imbued with a combination of force and elegance that a sphere of dense air formed and headed for the ghost Pokémon.

    The Drifblim had been anticipating my Togekiss’ aerial strike. Just when the Air Slash sphere was turning into an elliptical beam—I noticed it would always change shape before the impact happens—the balloon-like Pokémon countered the flying-type attack by creating a Substitute. The cloudy and spectral form of the Substitute emerged outwards from the Blimp Pokémon, effectively blocking Melisand’s attack. I couldn’t help be impressed by the sense of prediction the wild ghost-type had, and this just strengthened my desire to capture it. The sphere of wind-energy exploded on the ‘shield’ the Drifblim had put up, and now it looked like it was fading more than ever. The collision reminded me of an air bag safeguarding a passenger during a crash. The cloudy decoy of the Substitute was still there, though, and I had to destroy it as soon as possible.

    ”Toge-toge—” Melisand gasped, clearly shocked that the Drifblim had matched her Air Slash.

    I must have blinked too hard because I wasn’t able to understand what had happened next. The ghostly Drifblim began to contract, as if it was being pulled into another dimension. We all looked around and wondered what happened to the Blimp Pokémon, and I could feel that Melisand was stunned by its sudden disappearance. There was an unexplainable feeling lingering on my heart, I knew the Drifblim didn’t flee… I could still, strangely, feel its presence…

    I asked the Dragonite I was riding on to fly a bit higher.

    Where have you gone off too? I thought silently.

    Melisand looked at me, as if asking for her next command. I told her to wait and brace herself for what the ghost Pokémon would dish out next. She had just turned to give a nod to me, and in a flash the Drifblim materialized right next to her. Both my Togekiss and I were stunned by the event—I immediately understood what the Drifblim was planning—one more second the wild ghost type would deliver one heavy and forceful wallop to Melisand—

    Sucker Punch.

    I phased out from reality and drifted into a memory; I knew this was happening inside my head incredibly fast, but it felt like I could have gone off thinking for hours… It felt like the Drifblim was, somehow, making me remember this particular memory which happened nearly two years ago…

    * * *

    The first time that move was used against one of my Pokémon happened to be my very first battle. I lost that battle, but it wasn’t very fair to begin with. Although in hindsight, it was probably my mistake to challenge the very person who gave me Scorne as a starter, seeing as she’s one of the Johto Elite Four.

    I remember that battle clearly to this day; my Houndoom then was still a young, feisty Houndour…

    The moment I received Scorne from her, I bravely (or foolishly) challenged the Elite Four member Karen in a Pokémon battle. I couldn’t tell what she really thought of my offer, but she accepted the informal battle nonetheless.

    Of course I chose my Houndour to battle with, seeing as he was my only Pokémon that time. Karen selected her Cacturne to battle me with; the four-foot tall scarecrow-like Pokémon emerged in a very strange position from its Pokéball. Its arms were drooped and appeared to be motionless and its head was bowed, exposing the entirety of its notched cap. Slowly, it raised its head, and its face was dark and shadowed except for the two bright yellow eyes it used to stare at me. I remember hearing its dry voice slowly muttering its name, as if finishing its battle entrance.

    Scorne, then a young Houndour, was already out of his Pokéball. The fire-type was still hornless and also lacked the slender point-ended tail he had in the present.

    The Houndour growled, snarling at the grass-type opponent which stood before him ominously.

    “Are you sure about this, Nick?” Karen said, while tying her light-blue hair into a knot.

    “I am sure, and so is Scorne,” I replied, my gloved fists tightly clenched as the Houndour gave a bark of agreement. “Go on and show us what you’ve got—Fire Fang!

    Scorne barked again, and the battle began. The canine-like Pokémon ran fast towards Karen’s Cacturne. The Scarecrow Pokémon looked like it wasn’t going to move, and Karen gave no command whatsoever to dodge the Houndour’s attempt.

    Scorne’s fangs by then were covered in hot-red flames. He was gaining speed and was nearing where the Cacturne stood, but still it remained stationary. Then, the dark-type expert commanded the Scarecrow Pokémon.

    “Now!” Karen said with great force in the tone of her voice.

    My Houndour was inches away from inflicting the elemental fang attack on the grass-type’s thorned arms, or at least that was the scene I was witnessing a second ago. For some reason I must have not noticed, the Cacturne had vanished from its original position, and somehow it was already on top of Scorne, with one of its cactus-like arms ready to pummel the Houndour down to the battlefield.

    “Sucker Punch,” Karen yelled.

    The Cacturne turned its head towards me and shot me with a look using its yellow eyes. I read a sense of deviousness and an uncertain wickedness in the Scarecrow Pokémon’s pale-colored pupils. And without wasting any time the Cacturne followed its trainer’s command; a dark force violently enveloped its right arm which it brought down towards Scorne, driving him and effectively smashing him into the ground.

    The fires on the Houndour’s maw were extinguished soon after, and then the Cacturne resumed its original, unmoving stance.

    “First lesson!” Karen spoke loudly as I called for Scorne to try and get back up. “If you want to continue the dark-type expertise of the Magnum lineage, you will have to know not only how to utilize dark-type Pokémon to their full potential in battle, but also the way they execute their moves—each individual Pokémon has a unique one, but you have to understand the basic battle styles of dark-type Pokémon!”

    I remember I didn’t respond, I was taking her words to heart, so I let her continue.

    “Never let your guard down when battling dark-type Pokémon, or when a move of the same type would be used against you! To master the way of the cunning you will have to understand that failure to maintain concentration and be ahead at all times would cost you a match and consequently lead to your downfall!”

    I nodded, confirming I was listening to every word she said. The battle wasn’t over yet, although my Houndour had already received quite a beating from the Cacturne’s first blow. Thankfully, the Houndour managed to get back on all fours. I thought that head-on contact moves would be problematic if I kept ordering Scorne to use them, following after Fire Fang’s example. So I ordered the Houndour to attack from a distance using Flamethrower.

    Much to my dismay, however, the Cacturne disappeared once more a second before the stream of fire Scorne released from his tan-colored mouth could hit it, thus rendering the Flamethrower without a target. Karen had to dodge the wave of fire as I recall it, and just as quick as the Cacturne vanishing once more from its position it appeared in front of the Houndour, with another Sucker Punch ready to hit the Houndour like an uppercut, except the hit would be fueled in dark energy.

    Bam!

    Once again Karen overpowered my Houndour, and this time the attack was enough to knock Scorne out. I had lost my first battle. I rushed to Scorne’s aid and checked him if he was all right. He was weakened, but Karen knew what she was doing and Scorne didn’t suffer anything harsh.

    ”Take Scorne to Nurse Joy,” Karen told me, helping me get up as I held the canine-like Pokémon in my arms. “He will be all right, I happen to raise three pups of my own. I suggest he take a lava bath for him to recover more quickly.”

    I shook hands with the Elite trainer, thanked her once again for Scorne, the battle, and her words of wisdom. I headed for the door to go to the Pokémon Center, but before I could exit, Karen called for me.

    ”Oh, and one last thing, Nick,” she said, while returning the Cacturne to its Pokéball. “Never fall for the same thing twice, dark-type Pokémon will abuse anything to their advantage—remember that.”

    In my head, strangely, Karen’s figure transformed into something round and purple—she was turning into a Drifblim!

    This shocked me so much it snapped me back into the present, and just as I thought the whole process of remembering my first battle took no longer than half a second in real time. Was the Driblim messing with my head? Was it making me remember my first battle for a reason? I had no more time to think on the subject—one more second—and then the Drifblim’s arms would hit my Togekiss hard in the face.

    I didn’t respond fast enough. With a slap reminiscent of Karen’s Cacturne the Blimp Pokémon delivered the Sucker Punch, slamming my Togekiss into the lower layer of clouds. It took a few moments for her to shake the encounter off, and I could see she had sustained a bruise on her cheek from the attack. This wasn’t good—we had to finish this battle soon and catch the Drifblim or risk having Melisand get knocked out.

    Hicarus wailed when she saw Melisand getting struck by the Sucker Punch. The Drifblim floated backwards and resumed a pose that looked somehow regal. Melisand flew in level with the Drifblim again.

    My first objective was getting the ghost Pokémon’s Substitute away—it was already fading so I knew one Shadow Ball could probably remove it. The second objective was to hit the Drifblim with one last attack to bring its health a down a little bit lower.

    I could have told the Togekiss to use a Shadow Ball to break the Drifblim’s spectral shield, but I wasn’t going to let it use another Sucker Punch against me. Instead, I had another idea.

    ”Melisand, I want you to fly in a loop in front of the Drifblim’s Substitute,” I commanded her. “Use Tailwind and direct the gust at the Substitute to clear it away!”

    Thin streaks of wind started spinning near the Togekiss’ rear feathers which would soon envelop the rest of her body and the area if she was able to succesully use the move.

    ”Then use Incinerate on the Drifblim once you finish the loop all right?” I added. “And remember we don’t want to knock it out, so use just enough heat to bring its health down to capturing level.”

    ”Togekiss, toge-toge!” Melisand replied in her angelic voice.

    I couldn’t let the Drifblim gain the upper hand in this battle any longer. It was do or die, or rather catch it or let Melisand get knocked out. Hopefully the Tailwind would clear out the Substitute and leave Drifblim open to the intense fire type move that was Incinerate.

    I took out one HyperBall from my bag, and planned on throwing it at the Drifblim as soon as Melisand’s Incinerate hit it.

    OOC: That was an amazing CC increaser. I laughed, I cried, and I did this.

    ~~~~~
    ”Melisand, I want you to fly in a loop in front of the Drifblim’s Substitute. Use Tailwind and direct the gust at the Substitute to clear it away! Then use Incinerate on the Drifblim once you finish the loop all right? And remember we don’t want to knock it out, so use just enough heat to bring its health down to capturing level,” Nick reminded his Pokemon.
    Melisand crooned as miniature cyclones gathered underneath her wings. She corkscrewed towards the Drifblim before pushing the wind at the Ghost-type. The corkscrewing maneuver continued past the Drifblim, and small pieces of cotton-fluff detached from the Ghost-type. Melisand then performed a rolling procedure that flipped her around, and she started breathing a wide stream of fire over her opponent. The Drifblim moaned and scooted away from the flames, moving towards Nick as it did so. I saw the fire in the Trainer's eyes as he edged Hicarus closer. With a mighty heave, he sent a Hyper Ball spinning towards the Ghost-type.
    The Hyper Ball tapped the Drifblim and converted it into red plasma before absorbing said plasma and closing with a snap. I nudged Broadblade's side with my knee, and he quickly used his psychic powers to create a blue plane for the capture device to roll around on. All eyes were on the ball as it wiggled. Finally, after what seemed like half an hour, the ball lay still.
    "Congratulations," I shouted over to Nick as Broadblade pulled the plane closer to me so I could grab the ball. "Do you want to land somewhere and take a break, or wanna continue onwards?"
    OOC: Thankslol, and awesome I caught it :DD
    ~~~~~~

    My Ranger congratulated me as he retrieved the HyperBall which contained the captured Blimp Pokémon.

    For a few seconds my mind was blank, possibly because the happiness of catching the Drifblim was overpowering my normal thought processes. Melisand, however, took care of that—she flew over to me and gave me a hug with her soft-feathered wings. The Togekiss and Hicarus both gave respective hoots and bellows of joy; clearly they were also happy to have yet another addition to my team. I snapped back, and as if involuntarily, smiled. I don’t usually show outward signs of happiness, but I was glad the battle was over; Melisand did not faint from the battle and I successfully captured the Drifblim.

    Melisand released me from her grasp and I was able to say, “That’s awesome! I knew we would capture it.”

    Chainy smiled and kept the ball, as per park regulations.

    The battle was over, yes, but I knew fairly well that Melisand lost quite a fair amount of energy. I turned off my Pokédex and detached Togekiss’ Great Ball from one of the latches on my belt.

    ”You deserve some rest, Melisand,” I told the avian Pokémon and she nodded, after which I gently tapped open the blue-and-white ball on her middle crest feather. “You did a splendid job. Thank you.”

    Once the Jubilee Pokémon was inside the Great Ball, Chainy asked me for what I wanted to do next.

    "Do you want to land somewhere and take a break, or wanna continue onwards?" he asked; his black overcoat was fluttering on the wind while he rode on his Staraptor.

    I resized Melisand’s Great Ball and returned it to my belt, and promptly answered my Ranger, “As much as I like flying in the air—it is my element after all—I think I’d want to land down for a minute or two. Can we land on that rocky pillar over there? I see it stretches into an equally rocky road… There might be some Pokémon there as well.”

    I took out a disc from a pocket in my beige-colored bag, and retrieved my Poképlayer to play it in. The disc was labeled, in italicized violet script, "Uncommon Sigilyph Voice Disk." I pushed it into the player and an odd pitch and a series of strange noises filled our surrounding. It was almost like the Drifblim's crooning, except the recording of the Sigiliph's cry was even more otherworldly. The best I could compare it to was something like a cross between the sound of a broken piano and some freaky bird call.

    Chainy was okay with the idea so I told my Dragonite to descend, as the Ranger followed me on Broadblade.
