    @ChainReaction01;

    OOC: Short post is short.

    ~~~~~
    "Oh wow, a Nocty," I said, my Johto accent evident in every syllable.
    Chainy and I came across a thicket composed mainly of leafless Ash and Birch. A Noctowl was perched on one of the trees; the brown strigiform bird was easily spotted on the Birch's bone-white branches. Naturally, the Flying-type was sleeping; I recall that they usually hunted starting 7PM at night, and that wasn't for another two hours. It looked like any other sleeping Noctowl I've seen back in my home region: Its eyes were closed, head bowed down, showing its V-shaped crest. The sight of the Noctowl reminded me of the symbol of The Violet Twitchers, a bird-watching group from Johto founded by Falkner.
    “‘Never wake a slumbering Dragonite,’ they say, but I guess that could also apply to a Noctowl in this case. Not that I have anything against them, but I they’re pretty common back at home. Hopefully if we move around the thicket we won’t disturb it.”
    And with that, the Ranger and I walked slowly; I took extra care so as not to step on the few fallen branches that were scattered on the path before us.
    “‘Never wake a slumbering Dragonite,’ they say, but I guess that could also apply to a Noctowl in this case," Nick murmured. "Not that I have anything against them, but I they’re pretty common back at home. Hopefully if we move around the thicket we won’t disturb it.”
    "Sounds like a good plan," I whispered back, and we started tiptoeing past the thicket. I made special care to avoid all the dead branches lying around on the ground - they'd make an incredibly noisy snapping sound if they were even slightly brushed against.
    We managed to clear the impromptu minefield, but luck was not with us. There was a random screech from somewhere in the sky above us, probably a Staraptor or a Fearow pissed off at something that had accidentally crossed its path. That didn't bother me - what did was the fact that the loud noise had woken up the Noctowl we had tried to carefully to avoid. It looked around sleepily, and saw us watching it silently. The Wild Pokemon screeched and took flight, heading straight for us. Acting quickly, Nick pulled a PokeDoll out of his bag and threw it off the edge of the mountain. The Noctowl immediately swerved to its left and dived after the toy. We waited with held breath for half a minute, but the bird did not return.
    "Nice thinking," I said to Nick, and after we exchanged a grin we continued on.
    A couple of minutes later we found our next Pokemon. A small blue bird with white, fluffy wings was pecking at some seeds that were on a flat rock about chest-high to us. The Pokemon hadn't noticed us yet as it was paying complete attention to its meal.
    "Hey, that's a Swablu," I remarked. "They're pretty rare, especially for a Flying-type. Interested in it, Nick?"
    OOC: @ChainReaction01; Yup, that’s been my default method of escaping Pokémon I don’t want to capture, haha. Also, I’m not sure if I have any Pokédolls left (I don’t think my Item Statistics is updated) to use on the Swablu, so if I have none left I’ll just edit this post and buy a Pokédoll from you (if that’s possible).
    ~~~~

    I got tense when I nearly stepped on one inconveniently positioned twig. I instinctively looked back at the perched Noctowl, exhaled, and was thankful that it had decided to remain asleep. The Elite Ranger had less trouble avoiding the branch-litter, but luck stayed true to its fleeting nature, for a hair-raising shrieking noise suddenly came from above. The culprit was nowhere in sight, but one thing was clear: the noise broke the tawny Owl Pokémon’s sleep.

    Very much ungrateful to that shrieking Pokémon, I couldn’t help but let out, “Oh, Muk.”

    The Flying-type opened its great, ringed eyes, and noticed the two of us looking right back at it. Its drowsy appearance vanished in a second. It gave a low-pitched hoot as the Ranger and I continued walking down the path, in a vain attempt to convince the Noctowl that nothing had happened.

    The Noctowl hooted again, but it was noticeably louder than the last. I hastened my pace—no doubt I had already stepped on at least three branches—when I heard the flapping of wings from behind.

    “ ’sno use, Nick!” said the voice of the Ranger, pointing out that the Owl Pokémon was gaining on us with talons sharp from being an experienced hunter.

    I was quick to act and pulled out a Pokédoll from my bag; I have done the act enough times on this expedition that it nearly became a reflex of mine. I threw the doll off to the mountain edge, and hoped that it would divert the Owl Pokémon’s attention away from us.

    The Pokédoll undoubtedly got the Noctowl’s attention: it rapidly turned the other direction and snatched the figure with its claws. I could not help but think of an old Johto poem which told of the nature of Noctowl.

    The Noctowl are the Forest’s eyes
    Be wary to contest the wise
    For in Ilex they command law
    And justly punish with beak and claw

    I was glad neither of us had to experience the last line.

    “Nice thinking,” said Chainy, grinning.

    I smiled back at my Ranger, and without wasting time we moved on. A few minutes’ worth of walking passed, and soon we came across a light blue Pokémon eating some seeds on a flat rock. It did not seem to have noticed us and just continued pecking at its food. It was a Swablu, as my Ranger pointed out when he asked me if I had any intention on capturing it.

    “No, sorry,” I answered the Ranger. “I captured one a while back when I was in Hoenn. Named her Fawkes, and she’s an Altaria now, too.”

    The sight of the cloud-winged Pokémon reminded me of my own Altaria. I suddenly felt sentimental, and began wondering how Fawkes and all my other Flying Pokémon were doing back at my Family’s Aviary.

    No doubt Mom’s taking care of her, I assured myself. They’re fine… Magistrom’s probably bothering Hexis, and oh! I bet my badges Auriok and Kamikaze’s probably sky-racing each other right now…

    “You all right, Nick?”

    I must have been daydreaming; Chainy’s voice had returned me to my senses.

    “Yeah, I’m good,” I told him, although I wasn’t really sure. “Just tired, that’s all.”

    “Okay then,” Chainy replied; he sounded unconvinced but he nevertheless sported a cheery smile.

    “Maybe we can do better avoiding Swablu this time,” I said.

    And with that we moved onwards, and walked passed the preoccupied Cotton Bird. I opened my bag and readied a Pokédoll, just in case the Swablu would try and pursue us.

    OOC: @Morru Magnum; Now that you've gotten rid of the Swablu you have none. Thanks for catching that, I haven't been paying attention lol

    ~~~~~
    Nick told me that he had already caught a Swablu in Hoenn, and that it had since evolved into an Altaria. I really liked Altaria - it was severely underrated as a Pokemon. Just because it was Dragon-typed, people expected it to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Dragonite and Salamence but that wasn't how Altaria was supposed to fight.
    I realised that my Trainer was lost in thought, so I asked him if he was okay. He assured me that he was, so we went to move on. Unfortunately, the delay had ruined our chance at stealth. The Swablu had finished eating and was watching us with its beady little eyes. We tried to move quietly past but the bird started screeching. We stepped back and it quieted. Each time we tried to move forward it started up an unholy racket which ended when we retreated.
    "Just chuck it a doll," I sighed.
    Nick nodded and pulled out one of the toys. He tossed it towards the Swablu and the toy fell to the ground in front of the rock. The Flying-type fluttered to the ground and started pecking at it. I motioned with my hand and we moved quickly past it.
    A couple of turns later and we arrived back in front of the half-constructed hotel. This time, however, there was a different Pokemon there. A Togepi was asleep in the shade of a rock on an improvised mattress of leaves. I doubted that Nick would want to catch it seeing as he already had a fully-evolved Togekiss, but it never hurt to ask.
    OOC: If my escape attempt fails, can I buy a Pokédoll from you? @ChainReaction01;
    ~~~~

    The sight which lay before us was a familiar one: The Elite Ranger and I had come back to the unfinished hotel where I captured a Murkrow early on in my National Park run. I had not noticed it before, but this time I saw that there was a signpost near it, with the words “ A PROJECT OF THE J. FARNSWORTH CO. ” emblazoned in fading red. At least, those were the words I could discern, for the sign had been marked out with a great black X, and the fact that it was as ancient as the infrastructure beside it did not really help at all in making it any readable at the slightest.

    Knowing Chainy has been a Pokémon Ranger for a long time, I asked him if he knew anything about this mysterious J. Farnsworth.

    “It’s Joseph Farnsworth,” the Ranger revealed. “Rich bloke was the first person to discover this island.”

    “But I thought the National Park was owned by the Orange Government?” I asked, remembering an excerpt from a pamphlet I read when I was waiting in the lobby back at the Registration Desks.

    “Yep, that’s correct,” Chainy replied. “But not before Farnsworth and his crew were here. He tried to develop the island, set up buildings like this hotel here… But he lost a great deal of his wealth in the middle of construction, so his projects were never finished.”

    “And then he decided to sell the island to the Orange Government?”

    “Yes he did. And over the years, the Orange Island Government transformed the island into the National Park which you see today. Oh, look there—”

    The Ranger pointed to a makeshift bed of leaves, where something that looked like an egg was placed. I had a feeling that our history lesson was over, because I recognized the object for what it was: It was a Togepi; asleep, its spiked head was retracted to its bone-white shell marked with red and blue patterns.

    “Wanna take a shot at capturing that egg?” Chainy asked me.

    There were a lot of proverbs about Togepi in Johto, but I distinctly recall one which claimed that “happiness will come to anyone who can make a sleeping Togepi stand up.” I have always taken that figuratively, and as I had no intention on capturing a Togepi, especially since I already have Melisand with me, I declined the Ranger’s offer.

    “I think I’ll pass on the chance of ‘eternal happiness’ and ‘everyday luck’—as those old proverbs in Johto would say—and not disturb this Togepi. Maybe we can try and avoid this one, too.”

    “Third time’s the charm,” Chainy added.

    “Third time’s the charm," I responded in a hopeless voice. Unfortunately for Nick, his luck in running from Pokemon hadn't been too good on this Expedition. However, we managed to move quietly past the sleeping Togepi, and end up right next to the gate with the Normal-type Pokemon none the wiser. The sun was just setting and the orange light shone through the gate in a promising, yeah somehow slightly sad way. I noticed that perched on top of the gate was a small-ish black-and-white bird. It was looking down at us curiously with one beady eye.

    "Looks like we have time for one final Encounter," I said to Nick. "Do you want to try battling that Staravia? I know for a fact that Staraptors are incredibly powerful Pokemon."

    OOC: Cue epic battle theme music. @ChainReaction01;

    ~~~~
    A tall, steel gate, rusty from the hands of time, greeted us like a wide, spiked fiend. The sun was just beginning to sink into the horizon, as if the line between earth and sky was swallowing a great yellow eye. In some strange way, the scene inspired a sense of fervor in my chest, but at the same time it made me feel sad, for it heralded the end of my journey in the Outer Heavens. The sun’s rays, orange and golden, pierced through the black gate like swords of light, bathing us in the same fulvous tinge.
    "Looks like we have time for one final Encounter," Chainy spoke, taking notice of a Pokémon perched on top of the gate.
    It was a Staravia; the evolved form of the gentle Starly and the preceding form of the aggressive Staraptor. Chainy asked me if I wanted to battle the ash-feathered Flying-type, making sure to mention Staraptor’s renowned strength in battle.
    The Staravia was positioned regally on top of the gate, with a multihued sky on its back, so that it appeared as though it were some ethereal spirit, a winged manifestation of hope.
    “The reason why I have not used Hicarus so far,” I began, looking down at the small black ball which I now held between my fingers. “Was because I wanted to use her for the last Pokémon I would encounter on this run… I expected, perhaps foolishly, to battle an Aerodactyl or some other impressive sky Pokémon. But this Staravia is just as much a noble fighter for my Dragonite to battle with.”
    My Ranger nodded and said, “Your Dragonite wouldn’t probably have liked the smell of the Repellent you put on, too.”
    Chainy was right, but as I recalled Hicarus didn’t seem to mind me when I flew with her some moments ago, I reckoned she won’t notice it now.
    I grinned and clicked the Ultra Ball so it would assume its normal size; the yellow bands on the top half of the ball became more visible.
    “I don’t plan on catching this Staravia, but I’m not leaving Outer Heavens running from the last Pokémon I encounter. Hicarus, I choose you!”
    There was a flash of white and a low roar. Three feet from where I was standing stood a great draconian Pokémon whose hide was the same shade of orange as the setting sun. It stretched its sea-green wings and unwound its arms as if awakening from a deep sleep.
    “Ryuuuu—Kai, ryuuu—”
    The Dragonite took flight and circled once before landing again. Whenever rays of sunlight would hit it, its scales seemed to glow like a rainbow. I knew that it was her Multiscale ability, which lessened the damage she would take from attacks when at full health.
    “Now Hicarus,” I said, calling the Dragon-type’s attention. “This Staravia’s going to be the last Pokémon we encounter in the Park, so I want you to battle it. Show it what you’ve got and start off with a Fire Punch!”
    The Dragonite bellowed, took flight once more, and then raised a giant, orange arm against a beam of light coming from the drowning star.
    OOC @Morru Magnum; Sorry this took so long, lacking inspiration and what not.
    ~~~~~

    “I don’t plan on catching this Staravia, but I’m not leaving Outer Heavens running from the last Pokémon I encounter," Nick replied with a spark in his eye. "Hicarus, I choose you!”

    His Dragonite emerged from its ball, and I felt a momentary flash of excitement. I hadn't yet seen Hicarus battle, but I knew I could expect great things from the Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon. To the Staravia's credit, it didn't even slightly back down when it saw the dragon below preparing for battle. The Wild Pokemon fluffed its body up and emitted a loud screech. Almost as if in response, Hicarus took flight and circled the bird once. I wasn't sure exactly why the Dragonite did this - perhaps she wanted to get a good look at her opponent, or maybe she just wanted to stretch her wings.

    “Now, Hicarus, yhis Staravia’s going to be the last Pokémon we encounter in the Park, so I want you to battle it. Show it what you’ve got and start off with a Fire Punch!” Nick ordered.

    Hicarus thrusted her bulk off the ground with a large flap of her wings and a roar. The Staravia immediately took flight, but Hicarus was just as fast. The Dragonite's red arm burst into flames and she strained to get to her opponent as quickly as possible. Unfortunately for her, the Staravia was a wily one. It started to flap its wings wildly, and a huge amount of feathers started to drift downwards. Hicarus was forced to fly through the feathers, causing her to lose sight of her target momentarily, and when she burst out of the improvised cloud she only managed to clip the Staravia's tail with her fiery attack. I was impressed by the speed at which this Staravia was able to plan and move - while I was sure that Hicarus would be the ultimate winner of this fight, the Staravia might just make her work for it.

    Almost immediately the Dragon Pokémon’s arm ignited, scarlet flames snaking around her right arm.

    “You got that bird toast!” I cheered.

    I had just ordered my Dragonite to attack the Staravia with a Fire Punch, knowing fully well that it was one of her more powerful attacks. I had full confidence that my Pokémon would bring the first strike and deal major damage to her opponent that I was surprised to see the Staravia respond as though it were mobile lightning. The Staravia, ash-winged and formidable, took flight quickly so that my Dragonite had to keep up (fortunately enough she was able to do so). The Dragonite bellowed as the Staravia screeched—and it was then that I realized that this Staravia had to be the Pokémon that had foiled my plans to escape a Noctowl earlier.

    Hicarus moved closer to the bird Pokémon, ready to bring down her fiery attack. The Staravia, once again, proved to be quicker—before the great Dragonite could strike it flapped its wings furiously, sending a storm of black and white feathers right at the dragon’s face. Not only did the Staravia’s counter-attack obscure Hicarus’s view, but I also saw the feathers slightly extinguish the fires on my Dragonite’s arm. There was no doubting that the bird Pokémon had just used Featherdance, an effective strategy against physically-inclined Pokémon such as Dragonite.

    The great orange reptile extricated herself out of the flurry of feathers with mild difficulty, and when she saw her beaked quarry she only manage a faint swipe at the Staravia’s tail.

    “Staraviaa!” the Pokémon called.

    Hicarus backed away, panting in midair, though clearly she had not been damaged.

    I knew I had to do something about the Staravia’s speed, lest I find Hicarus being outpaced for the rest of the battle. There was also no point in commanding her to use physical moves, not when the Featherdance had just dented the dragon-type’s attack power…

    Then it hit me—Hicarus just happened to know a move that would not only put the Staravia’s agility in check, but it also happened to be a special move.

    Icy Wind.

    It was odd that, being a Pokémon that was four times weak to Ice moves, Hicarus would learn such a move. And yet she knew it, I knew she did: I had trained her to learn it (with the help from a Technical Machine, a disc containing tutorials to master the move) when we were back at Johto. We were going to face the dragon expert Clair, and I wanted Hicarus to have Ice moves at her disposal in case her Dragon-type attacks were not enough.

    By this time the sun was merely a fading beam of blue and orange.

    “Hicarus, I want you to use Icy Wind,” I said, as the clouds above us were becoming a sullen shade of indigo.

    The Dragonite roared approvingly. The Staravia was watching Hicarus intently, as the Dragon-type poised herself to channel the powers of Ice.

    I could just imagine her draw out water crystals and form it into a blast of chilly wind. The hairs on my arm stood as the atmosphere suddenly felt much cooler and darker…

    “And follow it with an Ice Beam attack!”

    And with that my Dragonite set out to unleash her strength on the Staravia.

    Nick cheered as the Fire Punch connected with the Staravia, but then fell silent as the bird's Featherdance technique lowered Hicarus' attack power. He was quiet for a while as he contemplated what to do, but it didn't take him long to come up with a plan.

    “Hicarus, I want you to use Icy Wind,” he commanded, “and follow it with an Ice Beam attack!”

    Both attacks were super-effective on the little bird, and I was worried that the Wild Pokemon would be hurt too much by these moves. Still, it was the Staravia's choice to fight, and I wouldn't step in unless absolutely necessary.

    Hicarus drew her wings back, and small glittery crystals appeared along their length. The Staravia screeched and dove straight towards the Dragon-type in a very reckless manner. Hicarus flapped her wings, sending the small crystals wafting towards the incoming bird. The Staravia disappeared inside the mist and came bursting out a second later. At first glance it looked okay, but when I narrowed my eyes I saw that lots of the little crystals were clinging to the bird's feathers. Still, this didn't deter the Staravia. It crashed right into Hicarus and started pecking and scratching for all it was worth. Hicarus made a small groan of discontent. She followed through on her orders, though - swirling motes of ice gathered around her fist, growing in size until a blizzard the size of a dinner table was whirling above her. Hicarus brought her fist swinging down, and the blast crashed into the Staravia, nicking the Dragonite in the process. The bird was send spiraling into the ground, and snow covered the rocky earth.

    The Staravia slowly got up and pushed itself out of the snow. All of its aggressive posture had gone now. It cheeped once at Hicarus and once at Nick, clearly thanking them for the battle. It then took flight, heading for the sunset. I couldn't help but notice that it wavered a little bit, but then that was to be expected.

    "Well, it's been a memorable run," I said, shaking Nick's hand and passing him his Pokemon. "Try and come back some time, if you can."

    Nick nodded and smiled and headed for the gate. I scratched my head and wondered if I could get away with a quick game of Preen. I was just starting to seriously consider it when my PDA started buzzing. The picture on the front informed me that Ivy was calling. No such luck then.

    @ChainReaction01;
    Thanks for taking me on my first run :D Guess I’ll be claiming the Murkrow, the Sigilyph and the Drifblim seeing as I don’t have any other choice =P

    Watching the Pokémon in aerial combat was like seeing two storms clashing with each other. Fierce and unrelenting, the Staravia was quite a force to be reckoned with. The bird battled almost warrior-like, and emerged seemingly unharmed from the Icy Wind attack Hicarus had unleashed. Flashes of beak and talon rained on the Dragon-type, though I was not worried; the Dragonite’s thick layer of scales would protect her from most physical attacks.

    “Ice Beam, now!” I reminded her.

    The Dragonite bellowed a low Ryuu as she focused, preparing to channel her energies into the attack. Orbs and spirals of frost converged above the Dragon-type. The Staravia was still clawing at Hicarus, as the Ice attack grew.

    The Ice Beam stopped growing when the Staravia managed to swipe at the Dragonite’s cheek, however. Hicarus then sent the heavy mass towards the bird Pokémon, sending it towards the ground like a worn shuttlecock. There was a blast, and when the cloud of chilly smoke diffused, I saw the Staravia pulling itself together. It managed to stand, but before us was a defeated warrior. It shook its wings and scraped off the ice crystals clinging on its feathers. Then the Staravia chirped at me and Hicarus.

    “It’s thanking you for the battle,” Chainy said.

    I bowed to it and so did Hicarus. It was then that something very odd happened. The Staravia had bowed too, but when it rose up, there was something different in its eyes. Or at least I thought there was something odd about them. They had flashed red, and I knew the bird was looking at me directly. A voice which was not my own entered thoughts in my head... Was the Staravia trying to tell me something? But that’s crazy…

    I will be coming for you, Nicholas.

    “No, it can not be…” I said, not realizing I was speaking out loud. “You are bound by the Seals!”

    The voice burst into a terrible, echoing laughter…

    I came back to my senses, only to see a worried Dragonite by my left and a Ranger staring at me as if I were a nutcase.

    “You’ve had quite a day—“Chainy tried consoling me, but I cut him off.

    “Where’s the bird?”

    “Flew off,” the Ranger pointed, and I saw a gray dot disappearing into the sinking sun.

    “S-sorry,” I muttered. “Just… exhausted…”

    That was a lie, of course, but I’d rather not be rushed by the Ranger to the Park Ward or something.

    "Well, it's been a memorable run," Chainy said, handing me over three camouflage-patterned PokéBalls. "Try and come back some time, if you can."

    I nodded and smiled at him, while I put the Park Balls in my backpack. I recalled Hicarus into her Ultra Ball, headed towards the gate, and waved the Ranger goodbye. The National Park was a great experience. I just wish it didn’t end with my family’s enemy talking inside my head, telling me that he had been released at last from his prison.

    I thought of my new Pokémon—Murkrow, Sigilyph and Drifblim—and wondered if I shouldn’t have brought them into the danger my family has endured for centuries...
