    Lita jumped up into a tree and the Whismur crashed into it. The little pink Pokemon staggered backwards, looking up into the tree. I had seen Whismur climb trees before, but they had to do it slowly and carefully. This one wouldn't attempt it in a battle unless absolutely necessary.

    Without waiting for Maya's command, Lita fired a Thundershock down at Whismur. It was surprised at this, and so wasn't able to dodge out of the way. The Thundershock zapped the Whismur into the air, and it came down smoking.

    The Whismur started howling. I thought it was howling in pain or fear, but I realised it was trying to fortify itself. Any close range attacks would be extra powerful now.

    Lita winced at the siren-like howl the Whismur made. She knew as well as I did that boosted attack would be potentially deadly.

    "Pi chu? Pi pi!" she taunted before unleashing a growl of her own in an attempt to cancel out the Howl's effect.

    "Good work!" I complimented her from below. "Next we'll try focusing on lowering its defense." Lita nodded, and watched carefully as to what the Whismur would do next.

    I weighed several scenarios in my mind--The Whismur could probably Howl again, or it could try another Hyper Voice. Or, it could climb up the tree and attack Lita directly--all I could do now was wait.

    OOC: You know that you can command more than one attack per post, right?

    ~~~~~
    Lita started growling back at the Whismur as it howled. Apparently Lita battled under her own commands, using Maya as supplemental support. It was an interesting, and rare, battle style.
    The Whismur looked up at Lita, and I though I saw a little bit of fear in its eyes. It started charging another Hyper Voice attack, making the strange echoing gurgling sounds as it did so.
    I wondered how Lita would respond to this. There wasn't much she could do - there was no way she could beat it in a contest of straight strength, and an attempt to dodge it may prove disastrous.
    I watched as I heard the familiar gurgling of a Hyper Voice being charged--brute strength alone wouldn't work, plus it was too risky to dodge.
    Then I got an idea: Why not try to confuse it in hopes it would attack itself?
    "Lita, try and give it a Sweet Kiss!" I called. Lita nodded and skittered down the tree. I could only pray she could get close to deliver the Sweet Kiss before the Whismur unleashed Hyper Voice. If the worst happen, I could always flee--but I didn't want to do that unless there was no other option
    (I knew that--if our Pokemon know a new move in B/W, can they use those moves?)
    OOC: Unfortunately not yet, Gen IV moves only for now.
    ~~~~~

    "Lita, try and give it a Sweet Kiss!" Maya called.

    I was impressed. That was a possibility that hadn't even occurred to me. Furthermore, it had definite possibilities. If the Whismur lost control of this attack it could do major damage to itself.

    Lita shimmied down the tree to the ground. She cautiously approached the Whismur, and planted a darling kiss on its cheek. The Whismur frowned, and tried to look down at the Pichu. Lita backed away as the Whismur spun around, trying to find out if its adversary had done anything else. The Hyper Voice bubble became unstable, and it exploded right in the Whismur's face, sending it flying through the air and crashing into a tree.

    The Whismur was now paralyzed and confused - this was a professional battling combination known as "parafusion". Using this, Maya could now pull ahead in the battle.

    I smiled as Lita gave the Whismur a cute peck on the cheek--the Sweet Kiss had worked, and now Lita was somewhat safe in the tree as the Hyper Voice bubble imploded in the Whismur's face.

    Now was my chance to strike! "Lita, Thundershock again!"

    "Piiiiiiiiiiii-CHU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Lita cried as she fired another Thundershock down to the Whismur below--I had to be careful at how many times she used that attack, because electric attacks did take their toll on Pichus after a while because of their learning to harness electricity.

    (How far down do I need to get the Whismur before a catch will work?)

    OOC: Well, I advise you meet the MCR and get the Pokemon down at least 40% health before attempting a capture, but that's just a guideline. The MCR is already met, and you could probably get away with a bit more because the Whismur is paralyzed. Right now your Capture Rate is about 28% - the best way to make this rise is just do more damage to the Whismur. I advise combination attacks and use of the scenery to make this quicker.

    When the Whismur is at 40%, I expect your Capture Rate to be about 50%ish. So I'd aim for about there. Don't forget that if the Capture fails you can (usually) pick the Balls up afterwards.

    ~~~~~
    "Lita, Thundershock again!" Maya called out.
    The little Pichu squealed as it emitted a cascade of sparks. The sparks jetted up into the sky and arced down onto the Whismur, shocking it. The Whismur staggered around, and then fell onto its side, convulsing. The parafusion combination was paying off - if the Whismur managed to overcome its confusion, it would probably be overcome with paralysis, like it was now.
    I suddenly shook, as I had a strange feeling that someone somewhere was writing on an internet forum, and that they were writing an awful lot less than they should be.
    Lita wheezed a little bit from the Thundershock, but her fatigue was nothing compared to the Whismur. It stumbed around the tree for a moment, then fell to the grass with a plop.
    "Think you have enough strength for one more Thundershock?" I asked. Lita nodded and started to charge up, but I motioned for her to stop. "Not yet, not yet! What I want you to do first is show this Whismur your Charm." Lita stayed the Thundershock, then began cutely prancing about some of the tree's lower branches. My thinking was, if I lowered the Whismur's attack even more, it would barely be able to do anything to Lita when it snapped out of confusion.
    Maya was having Lita battling conservatively, saving her power for when she needed it. I approved of this strategy - many Trainers overtaxed their Pokemon, only worry about Health and not energy levels as well, even though evolved Pokemon had much more stamina.
    "Show this Whismur your Charm," Maya called, and Lita jumped playfully from branch to branch, winding around springs and making quiet calls to the Whismur. The Whismur visibly controlled the shaking, and it ran over to the tree Lita was in. It began climbing up the tree, but once it was a metre up it lost its grip and fell to the ground, bumping its head.
    Lita saw the Whismur start to climb up the tree, but it only got about halfway before falling to the ground with a plop.
    "One more Thundershock should do it!" I told Lita. She nodded and sent another Thundershock streaking down to the ground. I saw the bright flash as it impacted the ground, but I wasn't sure how much damage it had done. I reached for my bag and retrieved a Park Ball--the Whismur was likely down low enough to be caught, but I wanted to see how much damage had been done before I made my throw...
    "One more Thundershock should do it!" Maya ordered Lita. Lita started squealing loudly, and a lance of lightning shot out of Lita and arced towards the Whismur on the ground. The Whismur started to run, but the yellow jet caught it and zapped it. It fell to the ground, panting.
    I looked over at Lita. She was panting too. The exertion of multiple Thundershocks had finally taken its toll. She slumped over in her tree branch, taking a quick rest in case the battle wasn't over yet.
    The Whismur couldn't stand up. Paralysis had set in on its legs. It used it arms to crawl behind a tree, hiding from sight. Then, I began hearing a snoring sound. Apparently, the Whismur was Resting to try and regain some health. If Maya didn't act fast, not only would it regain health, it would also heal its paralysis! However, the fact that it was sleeping meant it might be easier to capture...
    I saw the Thundershock connect on impact, prompting the Whismur to waddle off behind a tree. I groaned when I heard the familiar snoring of Rest--if I didn't take advantage of this prime opportunity to catch it now, it would heal itself completely and we would be back at square one--Lita was already tired, and I did not want to exhaust her any more than I had to.
    I quickly heaved my Park Ball at the Whismur and watched it wiggle in the grass, silently praying that it would hold.
    "Pi?" Lita asked, concerned.
    "It was trying to heal itself, so I threw the ball now before it could." I explained.
    OOC: Just in case you're interested, your Capture Rate was 70%, which is very respectable, you just had an unlucky roll. Keep trying, it's not over yet.
    ~~~~~

    Maya threw a Park Ball at the Whismur. It tapped on of the little pink Pokemon's feet. The Park Ball emitted a red flash, and the Whismur was converted in a red plasma-like form. The plasma floated into the partially-separated Park Ball, and then the two hemispheres snapped shut. The ball wiggled as the Whismur fought the Ball's capture mechanism.

    Half a minute later, a loud tone was played as the Whismur broke free from the Park Ball. It was still sleeping, and the capture attempt had inhibited its Rest, but nonetheless it had broken free. I would never have guessed that this frightened little Whismur had the strength to resist a capture while sleeping and paralyzed.

    However, the battle was not over. A capture was still very possible, although Maya could always just attempt to run. The perfect time to do so would be now, while the Whismur couldn't chase her down. However, if she did so, her time in the Park would be over for now.

    I watched as the ball wiggled once...twice...three times...only to have the Whismur break out again. I was not about ready to start over from square one, not after I came this far. Furthermore, Lita was already tired--she wouldn't survive having to start again after hurling Thundershocks just to get the Whismur weakened the first time.

    I just calmly fished another Ball and heaved it at the Whismur again--I had brought plenty of Balls for this reason, and I was only going to flee if or when I ran out.

    Lita watched the Ball wiggle intently...

    OOC: Congratulations on completing the run. Hopefully you'll choose to go through again in a week's time! :D

    ~~~~~
    Maya watched calmly as the the Whismur broke out of the Park Ball. She pulled out another one and threw it at the Whismur. Fortunately for her, the Whismur had moved slightly more out into the open, so it was easier to aim. The ball tapped the Whismur, and it was absorbed into the ball, which snapped shut.
    The Ball wiggled on the ground as the Whismur fought. After a tense half a minute, however, the ball stilled and the pressure pad on the front of the ball glowed red.
    "Congratulations," I said to Maya. "You just caught a Whismur."
    I walked over and retrieved both of the Park Balls, the empty one and the one containing Whismur. I handed the empty one to Maya but kept the Whismur's as stated by Ranger protocols.
    The exit was ten minutes' walk away. When we got there, I congratulated Maya on a good run, and I meant it. Pichu had a severly hampered movepool, and Maya's ingenuity had been strained to the limit. Yet, she had triumphed, and was now leaving with two new Pokemon to add to her team. As she left through the gate, I handed her the two PokeBalls, one containing the Meowth and the other the Whismur. I waved to her as she disappeared down the path. If she hurried, she might be able to catch the ferry that was leaving in half an hour.
    As for me, I settled down into the Ranger Outpost. I'd probably get a bit of rest before the next Trainer came through. I kicked off my shoes, peeled off my socks, and pulled out my portable game console.
