    "Lita, try Thunder Wave!" Maya called.

    Lita nodded, and she squealed loudly. She emitted a bright yellow pulse that passed through the Leech Seed and vines, enveloping the Weepinbell.

    The Weepinbell opened its mouth, probably to use a ranged attack, but little sparks began crawling all over its skin. The Thunder Wave had paralyzed it!

    Because the Weepinbell was paralyzed, the vines keeping Lita wrapped tightened and stopped moving. Lita was able to struggle out, freeing herself from the vines, but the mass of seeds and growths all over body kept feeding the Weepinbell energy.

    Unfortunately, due to Lita's limited movepool, she was not going to be able to win this battle. Maya had to run if she wanted to keep exploring the Park.

    But now it was her choice whether to attempt an escape or to purchase a PokeDoll.

    I smiled as Lita's Thunder Wave successfully paralyzed the Weepinbell. I didn't want to waste 500 credits on a Pokedoll unless I absolutly had to, and judging from the growths all over Lita, it was a chance I had to take.

    I quickly scooped her in my arms and dashed behind a tree, hoping the Weepinbell wouldn't follow us. It loped along at an attempt to find us, but the Thunder Wave slowed it down considerably. By then, Lita and I were hidden inside a bush, desperately hoping for some way to heal Lita from the Leech Seed. She cried for quite some time, and I assured her I was doing the best I could to get her someplace safe and heal her.

    As soon as the little yellow mouse had paralyzed the Weepinbell, her Trainer had run forward and scooped her up, attempting to run. I faded back into the trees: except in extreme circumstances, I wasn't allowed to help.

    Maya stumbled through the undergrowth, dodging and weaving around trees. She eventually found a large bush, and she hid inside it. Unbeknownst to her, I was in a tree just in front of her. I watched as the Weepinbell slowly hopped along, looking for Lita. I held my breath as it slowly moved past Maya's hiding place.

    It didn't find her, and it stumped off into the forest. I released my breath explosively, and jumped down from the tree. I pulled the bush open and helped Maya up. Lita was crying and whimpering, obviously afraid and in pain. The Leech Seeds were still attached.

    But then suddenly, they fell off of her, onto the ground.

    "Huh, the Weepinbell must be out of range," I said.

    Lita watched in surprise as the Leech Seeds fell off of her and disappeared. "Pi pi?" she asked.

    "Huh, the Weepinbell must be out of range," Chainy replied as he helped me up--apparently he had been following us close behind in case something went wrong.

    I debated about ponying up some cash to heal Lita, but she appeared to be okay, so I decided to wait until an emergency arose.

    "Pi pi pichu pichu?" Lita asked.

    I don't know, let's keep going and find out." I replied, daydreaming all the while about the day when she would become a Pikachu

    Lita made some questioning noises. Maya turned to her.

    "I don't know, let's keep going and find out," she replied. Apparently, Lita had heard something. She then walked off, already lost in daydreams.

    I smiled. Maya seemed like a friendly, carefree Trainer. I had been a bit hard on my Pokemon at times, but they were understanding and their harsh training had paid off. Not many Gallades could run off Kyogres.

    We kept on walking, but now we were just winding our way through the trees instead of following the path. I was prepared to go and find it, but apparently Maya was just as happy forging her own path.

    I was contemplating pulling out my game machine and playing while we walked when a foul stench pervaded the air. I knew immediately what it was.

    To confirm my guess, a little Stunky walked out from underneath a bush. It hissed warningly at Lita and Maya.

    "Piii-chu!" Lita wheezed as she sniffed Stunky spray in the air. She held her nose as the Stunky trotted out from a bush and hissed a warning.

    "Okay, we're going, we're going!" I assured Lita. She seemed prepared to fight, but I was concerned that the Stunky spray would hinder any attempt at a battle. Granted, she had defeated Stunkies before, so she had a chance should the Stunky decide to battle. Then again, none of the Stunkies she'd defeated before had sprayed before the battle. I remembered one of Prof. Rowan's lectures--wild Stunkies tended to do that to warn away predators.

    Maya and Lita both stood still. The Stunky watched both of them carefully for a little bit, its black eyes darting from one to the other, watching carefully for any sign of aggression.

    After a minute, it seemed satisfied. It walked across the clearing and into another bush.

    I sighed with relief. Stunky could be quite mean and sadistic, especially in battles.

    We continued on through the forest. I repeatedly got wet floundering through the plants and stepping in puddles. Then, suddenly as if my prayers were being answered, we stumbled across a path. It was then that I noticed there was a deep pounding sound coming from both ends of the pathway.

    "Well, what do you want to do?" I asked Maya. "We could go south or north along the path, or just keep traveling through the woods."

    I was not the only one relieved to see a path. "Let's take the path--north." I suggested. Pounding or not, I wanted to walk on solid ground for a change instead of tromping through the brush.

    "Pi pi pichu?" Lita worried.

    "It'll be okay--if that pounding is something scary, we can run away if we have to." I assured her before sneezing--the pollen in the brush was starting to get to me.

    "Pichu!" Lita smiled before offering me a Kleenex.

    "Thanks, sweetie." I replied before blowing my nose. If she was this nice now, I could only hope about what she would be like as a Pikachu.

    To my eternal happiness, Maya chose to walk along the path. She didn't say which way, though, so I just started leading us south, towards the Ranger Outpost.

    The smashing sound got louder, but I still couldn't see it. Until we crested a hill. Then I saw it.

    Laying right across the middle of the path was a huge Slaking, idly pounding the ground, making a huge crater.

    I gulped. I disliked fighting Slaking.

    "I don't suppose you want to fight it?" I asked Maya.

    "Not at all..." I stammered, looking desperately for Chainy to give me ideas on how to distract the Slaking or keeping it from challenging us. Lita would be a Pichu pancake if she tried to fight the behemoth that appeared perfectly happy creating a crater in the path.

    We carefully tiptoed into some nearby brush and around where the Slaking lay, only getting back on the path when we were sure it would not see us our sense us.

    I felt guilty from avoiding all these battles. True, it would make Lita evolve faster, but I wasn't sure if Lita could even survive the battles we'd been encountering.

    "Not at all," Maya replied, which I thought was a clever move. Lita would have next to no chance of beating something that huge.

    We quietly moved into some brush, attempting to sneak around the Slaking without it noticing us. It was going well, until Maya accidentally stood on a big stick. As she put her weight on it, it snapped, making a resounding crack that seemed to echo throughout the clearing.

    The Slaking immediately whipped its head around towards us and roared.

    "We'd better get out into the open," I said. "If we stay in here, the Slaking is liable to shoot at us with a Hyper Beam. We could try and run for it from here, but that Slaking might chase after us, and that would be magnitudes of not good."

    A twig snap tipped the Skaking off to our presence, and it roared with displeasure. Chainy told me to get out in the open, so I complied.

    "Pi pi pichu!" Lita scolded as we streaked down the path.

    "Scold me later, sweetie, we're trying to get away!" I replied, looking back after a while to see if the Slaking had followed us. If it did, we would be in a world of trouble.

    I heaved a sigh of relief when I heard no sign of the Slaking--it probably decided to go back to punching a hole in the ground. Lita was just as relieved--there was no way she could've fought a Pokemon that size.

    OOC: Man, you've been having unlucky escape attempts recently :(

    ~~~~~
    We nervously moved out into the open. I held my hands palms-out and raised them, the universal-body-language symbol for "I don't have a weapon, and therefore cannot harm you in any way." In actuality, I had a pistol with customized tranquilizer darts hidden inside my coat, and I could draw and fire it inside of half a second. But the higher-ups didn't like it when I used it, and the Slaking wasn't acting boisterously.
    And that thought clinched it. The Universe likes to trip stuff on me just when I think everything's okay.
    The Slaking stood up to its' full height and bellowed. Lita squealed in fright, but bravely stood in front of Maya, prepared to defend her. It was quite possibly the most imbalanced fight I had ever seen.
    Slaking pounded its chest, and ripped a tree out of the ground. It then threw the tree at us.
    I quickly tapped Meta's PokeBall, and he exploded out in a flash of red light. He created a Psychic shield around us, but the tree wasn't aiming for us. It landed on the path behind us, effectively blocking our escape route.
    I winced as the Slaking tossed a tree behind us, blocking any way out. One of Chainy's Pokemon had created a Psychic shield around us, but I wasn't sure if even that would hold. Lita, meanwhile, stood in front of me, silently daring the Slaking to do its worst.
    "Lita, come back!" I begged. "There's no way you can beat that Slaking!"
    "Pichu, pi pi pi chu!" she protested, but I grabbed her away before she could attack. While I applauded her bravery, there wasn't much a Pichu could do against a Slaking--except maybe get squished.
    I glanced at Chainy, shaking in fear--what could we do now?
    Lita tried to get out of the shield and battle, but Maya snatched her back. Lita squealed protestations.
    "There's no way you can beat that Slaking!" Maya cried. She started shaking as the Slaking walked ponderously over to us.
    As much as I felt horrible, the Slaking still wasn't attempting to hurt Maya or kill Lita. All it was doing was demanding a battle, and as a Ranger I had to follow the rules.
    "I'm sorry Maya," I said, "but there are three options here. One, Lita battles this Slaking. Two, you buy a PokeDoll and we leg it. Three, you request to leave and I can get us out of here."
    I waited silently for her reply as Slaking pounded on the shield.
    I swallowed hard as Chainy laid out my options--Lita battle the Slaking, where she would have next to no chance of winning, pony up the cash for a Poke Doll, which was looking increasingly more attractive the more the Slaking pounded on the shield, or bail out entirely. Bailing out was the last thing I wanted to do, and I wanted to make sure I got my money's worth.
    "What do you think, Lita?" I asked.
    "Pi pi pichu pichu!" she replied "Pi pichu pi!"
    I searched through my pockets for what change I had. "Remind me again how much a Poke Doll is?" I asked Chainy as I scooped together coins.
    "Remind me how much a PokeDoll is?" Maya asked me.
    "Five hundred," I replied, taking the change and passing her a PokeDoll. She gingerly placed it on the ground in front of the Slaking.
    The Slaking stopped pounding the ground and roaring. It looked carefully at the doll, then laid down and went to sleep.
    I grabbed Maya's arm and jerked my head towards the bushes.
    "Let's leg it before the Slaking wakes up," I whispered.
    I quickly followed Chainy down the path after buying and distracting the Slaking with a Pokedoll. Although Lita had been enamored by the tiny Clefairy doll, I explained that the doll was the difference in allowing us to escape in one piece and not for her to play with.
    After pocketing the 750 credits I had left, we came to a stream not far from the path that had Berry bushes nearby. Lita was excited about the Berries, but I assured her that only Chainy knew which ones were safe to eat and which were not--and that out of precaution, she shouldn't eat any.
    We got away from the Slaking and walked down a barely used path. I couldn't hear any crashing or smashing, so obviously the Slaking was done with us.
    As we walked along the path, Lita saw a bush of berries. She squeaked a question.
    "Chainy knows which ones are safe and which ones aren't," Maya said.
    "Those are okay," I said. "They don't have any beneficial effects, but they don't have any negative ones either."
    Lita walked forward and tried to take one, but her front feet stopped a metre away.
    "What's the matter?" Maya asked.
    Lita squeaked in confusion. She tried to move her paw forward, but it wouldn't. It was about that time that I noticed a red stripe hovering in midair.
    My mind's light clicked on. I realized what was happening.
    "There's a Kecleon that's blending into its surroundings while eating those berries," I explained. "Do you want to try and capture it?"
    Figuring that the berries were safe to eat, effects or not, she eagerly romped up to the bush in an attempt to take one, but was seemingly stopped by an invisible wall.
    "What's the matter?" I asked as Lita fruitlessly tried again and again to pass the "wall"
    "Pi pi pichu pichu!" she grumbled as she again hit the "wall"
    Chainy then spotted a red stripe seemingly hovering in the bush. "There's a Kecleon that's blending into its surroundings while eating those berries...do you want to try and capture it?"
    "Nah--it appears to be happy right there, so we'll leave it be." I replied.
