Maya squealed loud and long, and Lita did as well. I was kinda woried that they'd gone into shock, but then they both shot off down the path like they'd been shot out of a cannon.

My jaw dropped. I had never seen a Trainer move that fast.

Meta, my Metagross, summoned himself out of his PokeBall.

"Hey, Meta," I said, rapping him gently on the leg. I then realised that I'd probably need Meta to catch up with with Maya and Lita. I jumped on top of Meta and he retracted his legs underneath his body. He flew quickly through the air, hovering about half a metre above the ground.

We soon caught up with Maya and Lita. They had stopped running and were panting heavily. I dismounted and walked over to them. And that's when I saw it.

"Uhh, Maya?" I said carefully. "The Spinarak is... on your back."

Maya screamed very loudly as the Spinarak climbed up onto her shoulder. She quickly scooped up a stick and had the Spinarak climb onto that. She then dropped the stick behind a bush and motioned for us to continue along the path.

I smiled. Apparently she wasn't a big fan of Bug Pokemon. God knows I wasn't either. They were too small to be completely legitimate and they usually had too many legs. It didn't help that many were poisonous too.

"So, is there any particular reason you don't like Bug Pokemon?" I asked Maya curiously as we walked down the forest path.

Maya explained to me how she had a long-running hatred of Spinaraks. She told me how she squished them lots back in Celadon City. That startled me a bit, but I guess the little things were extremely unwelcome there.

The intense dislike was explained a it later when Maya revealed that Lita had had a close run in with an Ariados.

I nodded. That would be a fair enough reason.

Lita began retelling the encounter to me, using squeaks and squeals. I smiled and nodded, not understanding a world.

Over Lita's story, I hard a gentle chittering. Floating over the middle of the path was the most beautiful Beautifly I had ever seen.

I nudged Maya and pointed it out to her.

"Well, you said you liked Beautifly," I said with a grin. Then I sighed. "It's a pity you can't catch it without a Hyper Ball."

The Beautifly landed on a flower and began sipping up the nectar,

"Why hello there..." Maya cooed at it.

Lita began singing a song a didn't recognise. Maya smiled.

"You like it when I play that song on Dancing Star at the arcade, don't you?" Maya said as she smiled.

I got a sudden image of Maya at a video arcade, and as I looked her over, I grinned. She looked like she'd be at home on a Dancing Star machine.

"I can't play that game to save my life," I confided. "Or any of the music or rhythm games in general. Give me a shooter or straetgy game any day of the week."

Lita jumped up onto Maya's shoulder and nuzzled against her neck. I smiled - I could remember when Dual was a little Ralts and he used to do the same thing. These days, if I mentioned that, he'd smack the back of my head and burn the seat of my pants.

We continued down the path, and Maya checked behind every bush, looking for Pokemon. I was surprised by her bravery - the bushes was usually where Bug Pokemon hung out.

As if to emphasize my point, the next time Maya stuck her head into a bush she squealed and pulled it out.

A dirty great Venomoth floated out, chittering dangerously. I watched it carefully - it didn't look happy.

"I don't suppose you want that?" I asked Maya.

"N-n-no..." Maya stammered as the Venomoth moved away. "I wasn't scared of it, I was just surprised."

She seemed almost nostalgic as the giant purple moth floated towards Lita.

The Venomoth regarded the little Pichu silently. Then, it nodded its' head and chittered wildly.

"It's challenging Lita to a fight!" I yelled.

The Venomoth rose higher in the air using its powerful wings. When it was five metres in the air, its' wingbeats began scattering little sparkly scales or pieces of powder or something towards Lita.

It was using a status attack, but I couldn't tell which one...

Maya quickly scooped Lita up and retreated behind a tree.

"If the Venomoth comes back, could you try and fend it off?" she asked me. "I don't think Lita's ready for that kind of opponent this soon."

I raised my hands helplessly.

"Sorry, but I can't," I said, a little sadly. "I can't interfere with any Wild Pokemon unless they're endangering your life. If they just want to battle, I can't really help you out."

Then I remembered something. I dropped to one knee and checked my bag. I grinned as I found what I was looking for.

"If there is a Pokemon attacking you, and you can't flee," I continued, "I can sell you a PokeDoll for 500 dollars. Guaranteed to distract the Pokemon so you can escape."

I was about to dig one out when I looked around, and saw that the Venomoth was nowhere to be seen.

"Well, it looks like you don't need one this time," I commented, swinging the bag back over my shoulder. I always felt weird selling stuff to Trainers in the Park, but it was better than the alternative.

We moved on down the path. I thought I recognised this path from previous runs, but you could never be sure in the Woods. I could almost swear that the forest itself mixed up the paths just to keep us Rangers on out toes.

Lita was gamboling amongst the flowers on the side of the path, smelling them, weaving amongst them, and even jumping on top of the sturdier ones. She jumped on top of a large flower when it moved beneath her. Startled, she fell off, then ran back to Maya.

The flower seemed to unearth itself. It was big and yellow with green leaves. I also saw that it had a huge mouth.

It was a Weepinbell, and it looked like Lita had disturbed its nap.

"Want to try battling that?" I asked Maya.

Lita quietly walked away from the Weepinbell and back to Maya.

"It was a good thing that Weepinbell accepted your apology." Maya explained to her Pichu. "Not all Pokemon will be that nice."

As she said it, I had a funny feeling. We turned to leave, but suddenly a vine burst from the ground. It wrapped around Lita, squeezing the little electric mouse, who promptly began squealing in pain.

The Weepinbell had pretended to accept Lita's apology so it could set a trap! Rarely was a Pokemon so cunning. And now that Lita was snared by a Wrap attack, there was only one way that Maya could escape...

Maya called out to Lita, telling her to use Thundershock. Personally, I would have gone with Thunder Wave, but it wasn't my battle.

The little Pichu squealed as it charged its attack, and soon a yellow arrow speared through the sky, striking the Weepinbell firmly between the eyes.

The Weepinbell flinched, but didn't let go. Furthermore, it spat some seeds at Lita. They lodged in her fur and small vines came out, wrapping around her. It was a Leech Seed attack!

There was no way Lita could win this battle. Well, there was always hope, but I didn't like the looks of this Weepinbell. It was a crafty one, staying long-range to avoid Lita's Static Ability. I unconciously fingered one of the PokeDolls in my bag. They were $500 each, but they guaranteed an escape.

My eyes tightened as I made a decision. If Maya asked for one, I'd sell it to her, but if she didn't I wouldn't stop the battle. After all, the Park was inherently dangerous, and the Weepinbell wasn't life-threatening.

Yet.
