"Nah, let's move on," Kyle replied softly. Before we did so, however, he pulled out one of the digital cameras that they sold at the Park Shop. He started taking multiple pictures of the Gorebyss, no doubt intending on selling them to the Archives. He'd only be able to sell one, but that was okay - the cameras used a storage chip, not film, so he could take as many as he wanted.

The Gorebyss acted like a real ham, winking and darting around and jumping into the air, all for Kyle's benefit. Finally, it waved its tail at us and swam down into the lake, disappearing into the deep blueness. I urged the boat onwards, and the flippers started up again, propelling us across the now-mostly-calm waters.

It wasn't long before the opposite shore started to grow close. I thought it was most likely that we would encounter our next Pokemon on the shore, but I was wrong. A reddish shell bobbed in the water, and I leaned out over the boat, curious to see what it was. As we got closer I saw that the shell was being propelled by two legs and two arms, in a form of doggypaddle. The Pokemon didn't even look at us - it ignored us completely. I shrugged and turned to Kyle.

"I don't suppose you want to battle a Wartortle, do you?" I asked him.

As I snapped photo after photo, the Gorebyss splashed about, leapt into the air and twirled around, generally looking rather cute for an eel-like Pokemon. At last, the Gorebyss had had enough fun from its photo shoot, batted its eyelashes and dove down into the water, disappearing below the now calm waters. I turned to my Ranger to ask him to carry on, but he was one step ahead of me. The boat lurched forwards, then settled into a rhythmic pattern, moving constantly forward on the obscure-looking but quite efficient paddle-fins on either side.

Soon, the opposite shore came into view. The horizon was quickly filled with land and lake grasses. I could even pick out a few lily pads up ahead. I was almost surprised that we didn't run into another Pokemon, but then Chainy pointed at something close-ish to the boat. I looked over and saw a reddish brown shell, floating in the waves. A pair of arms and a pair of legs shot out from it, swimming like my Raticate would: a doggy paddle. Apparently it hadn't even seen us yet. My Ranger turned to me and shrugged.

"I don't suppose you want to battle a Wartortle, do you?" he asked me.

"Not especially," I replied. "Let's keep moving."

My adventure at the park was coming to an end, so I had my doubts that anything exciting would happen. But who knows? Maybe there was something special, waiting for me on the land. I looked forward to exploring the docks ahead.

"Not especially. Let's keep moving," my Trainer replied. I nodded, unsurprised - Starter Pokemon were easily obtained through regional professors. Strictly, they were supposed to be reserved for beginning Trainers but Professors were known to give the normally-rare Starters to very experienced Trainers as a kind of unofficial rewards, and they in turn were given or lent to Breeders. This had the effect of making the Starter Pokemon quite common, but they were still bred because they would become very rare if they weren't.

I pushed the throttle further, and the boat picked up in speed. The Wartortle looked over its shoulder and saw that we were coming, but gave no indication that it cared. Indeed, it barely flinched as our vessel powered past it, causing the waves that it was swimming on to rock. I smiled as I was glad that we had managed to avoid a battle that Kyle didn't want.

The boat slowed down as we approached the single wooden dock, and the bump that occurred when we came to a stop was quite gentle. Kyle hopped off, obviously eager to continue exploring, as I flicked on the GPS switch. This switch emitted a pulse to let any unoccupied Rangers nearby know that the boat was here and not at its designated mooring. This wasn't a huge problem - in fact, I'd occasionally stumbled across out-of-position boats and been glad that I did. They shortened unplanned traveling.

I tied the boat off as I left, and I saw that Gliscorman was already standing on the dirt path leading away from the dock. I jogged up to him to see that he was watching a small blue Pokemon that was sleeping in the grass. It looked kind of like a tadpole, except much much bigger.

"Well, interested in this Wooper?" I asked. "Or are you just looking?"

The Wartortle gave us no trouble as we sailed by. In fact, it hardly even gave us a second glance. I guess it was either lazy or simply used to being bothered by passing Trainers. We sailed on for a while longer, with nothing special happening in the mean time. The waves lapped at the hull of our boat and the sun shone brightly. Eventually, we came upon a small dock. It was out of the way, but that didn't seem to be a problem for Chainy. As he moored the boat, I hopped out. I looked around a little. There was a dirt path that lead out and around to some more lakes. The dock we were at appeared to be little-used, but still in working order.

I looked back to see if my Ranger needed any help. He was fiddling with some sort of tech-y gadget, probably to contact other Rangers about the boat's position. If it was out of the way, it could be lost if they didn't report in the locations. I shrugged and walked a little bit out on my own, eager to explore. Then, I came upon a small, blue Pokemon. I recognized it from a previous encounter here. A Wooper. I couldn't tell if it was the same one or not, but it looked happy, kinda bouncing around on its stubby little feet.

"Well, interested in this Wooper?" Chainy asked. "Or are you just looking?"

I turned around. The Ranger had finished with whatever he was doing, so we could proceed to look for the final encounter here in the park. I smiled.

"Nah, let's leave it here," I told him.

The Wooper would be more happy here than with me. Plus, I'd already caught three Pokemon that I liked. I'd hate to have to choose which one to leave behind. I motioned for Chainy to lead the way down the path. Adventure awaits those who look!

"Nah, let's leave it here," Kyle replied, turning to leave and indicating that I should follow him. I wasn't particularly surprised about his choice - Wooper were so common on the mainland that they were practically pests. There was little to no point catching commonly-available Pokemon at the National Park because they could be caught anywhere for free, and there were much rarer Pokemon here up for grabs.

I went to follow Kyle as he left, but unfortunately for him, the Wooper did so as well. The Water-type hopped after us, using its tail to perform a large forwards-bounce every couple of steps so that it could keep up with us. I ignored it for a little while, but soon it became evident that the Wild Pokemon wasn't going to leave us alone.

"Looks like this little guy has taken a liking to you," I said to Kyle. "You can either battle it, or I can bribe it away with another PokeDoll. It's entirely up to you, but I don't think we're going to see any other Pokemon until this one has gone away."

We started walking again, farther inland. My Ranger followed close behind. Earlier in the run, he had taken the lead. Now, he was trusting my judgement in wandering through the park. It felt good that he was able to put trust in my judgement. While I couldn't say the same, it was a nice thought.

Suddenly, Chainy stopped. I turned around to face him, expecting something spectacular to have appeared. He was looking down, and I followed his gaze. The little Wooper was back! It had been doing a strange version of a skip that involved it's tail, trying to keep up with us longer-legged humans. I almost felt sorry for the thing, but then I remembered the little I had read in Ranger protocol. It would be hard for me to force him to leave us alone.

"Looks like this little guy has taken a liking to you," he told me, reaffirming my suspicions. "You can either battle it, or I can bribe it away with another PokeDoll. It's entirely up to you, but I don't think we're going to see any other Pokemon until this one has gone away."

I nodded, mostly to myself. I guess I'd have to shell out some of my meager funds. I hadn't brought very much with me, but it looked like it'd be enough. I dug through my pockets, trying to find correct change. For a few minutes, all I managed to produce were a couple of small coins. I looked up quickly, embarrassed, to see how closely Chainy was following my actions. While I couldn't read his expression, I noticed a hint in the Wooper's face that looked suspiciously like a grin.

I mumbled something or other, then went back through my wallet. I managed to pull out a little cash, and stuffed it into my Ranger's waiting hand. I felt like I was going red in the face. It wasn't every day that I couldn't find money in my own pockets. My only salvation was that I almost never blushed. I shrugged, as if to say: "what can you do?"

Kyle started to nod absently and pat himself down, no doubt looking for some cash. He got more and more red as he pulled small notes and pieces of change out of various pockets. I felt bad about charging him for the doll, but it wasn't cheap to make these things. As it was, we sold them barely above cost. Furthermore, the Park needed to be a business - we had to pay permits, buy items, employ workers, etc etc etc. This was the reasoning behind charging for items and entry. Us Rangers didn't like doing it, but we had to.

Eventually, Kyle found the correct amount. I took the money and slipped it into a coinpurse section of my pants. Kyle didn't seem interested in taking the plush toy, so I tossed it behind us. The Wooper immediately bounded after it, leaving us alone. We continued on in silence, and the trees to our left started to thicken. The gate became closer and closer, and I knew my time with Kyle was almost over.

Suddenly, there was an echoing call coming from within the trees. I turned to my left to see a small blue Pokemon with a red head float out of the trees. It smiled at us and circled us a couple times. Red lights winked in the middle of both of its tails.

"Wow, it's not often you see a Mesprit," I said to Kyle. "Do you have a camera?"

Lucky for me, the Pokedoll worked its magic. Chainy tossed it casually behind us, and I watched, over my shoulder, as the little blue Pokemon bounded away after it. The little Wooper seemed even more happy with the toy than it had been following around strangers. I smiled to myself. It wouldn't have solved anything, battling with it.

My Ranger and I walked on, both of us knowing that we would have to leave the Park soon. Eventually, the gate came into sight. It had been fun, I thought.

Just then, a cry echoed through from across the lake, slightly warped. My Pokemon Trainer skills told me it was a Mesprit, a legendary Pokemon. My basic science skills told me it was coming towards us, and fast.

It flew over the scrawny trees and, suddenly, came into sight. It was pink-ish, with glowing gems on its forehead and the tips of both its tails. I was amazed, I'd never seen one before. I'd only ever heard about it.

"Wow, it's not often you see a Mesprit," Chainy told me. "Do you have a camera?"

I blinked a little. I had been so in awe at the sighting, I had nearly forgotten the camera around my neck! I snapped a few photos, making sure to have at least one good one to sell and one good one to keep.

The Mesprit circled around the trees a few times, a smile on its serene face. As it flew away, I began to notice its mythical powers. I felt intensely happy. Happy that I was alive, happy that I had gone into the park. Happy that I had gone through this entire Park Run, and happy that it was over. Not a sad thought crossed my mind as the two of us walked towards the gate leading out of the park.

Kyle quickly unslung the camera from around his neck and took a few shots of the Legendary Pokemon. The Mesprit giggles and circled us a couple more times before flying off over the lake. I knew that the Archives would only take one of the pictures, but perhaps he wanted to keep a few of them for himself.

I nodded at Kyle and we continued on to the gate. It hadn't been a super-long run, but for some reason it felt like it had been years. I ran my hands through my pockets, looking for the PokeBalls containing the creatures that Kyle had captured. Once I managed to dig them out of their little pocket, we had arrived at the gate. I passed them to Kyle in a hand-shake.

"It's been fun," I said to him. "Make sure you swing on by again soon."

He nodded and took the balls before leaving, heading towards the Docks. I yawned and looked up at the sun, which was definitely setting. I decided that if I moved quickly, I might be able to get a couple games of Preen in before dinner.
