I watched Dagger as he chased a tiny Zorua cub around the lobby, chuckling a little at the sight. He and my Zoroark Trickster had recently been the proud parents of a healthy Zorua litter, five cubs in all. Trickster was resting in the back with the other four cubs, all of whom were a little less energetic than the only female of the bunch. They were going on three months old, nearly fully weaned and ready to be released into the Park, which is what both my Pokemon had made clear was what they wanted.

The main reason I was watching the antics of my Pokemon was because I was waiting for my Trainer to arrive. I glanced down at the information I’d recently printed from the computer, idly flipping through some of the papers. The Trainer’s name was Eric and he’d been to the Park before, though I wasn’t sure how many times. He was bringing a nice array of items with him, more than most Trainers I saw entering the Park. Like most others, though, he was bringing a small group of Pokemon with him. His team for this run consisted of Starmie, Aerodactyl, and Ambipom. Starmie and Aerodactyl were pretty good choices considering Eric’s destination of choice for this visit. All three Pokemon had a fair number of extra moves in their arsenal, so their Trainer would probably be prepared for anything no matter which of his Pokemon he used.

Eric would be due to arrive soon. I looked up from his information and watched Dagger waving his two tails at his cub, smiling when the little black fox awkwardly pounced at them and ended up tripping herself. She tumbled to the floor with a squeak, causing Dagger to sniff all over her to make sure she was all right. I shook my head at his change in personality after becoming a father; before, the Brave Floatzel was never one for cutesy things. He was a tough, stand-offish kind of Pokemon. Ever since Trickster had birthed a litter by him, though, he had changed completely in attitude. He was now a gentle creature, no longer carrying the swagger and bluff he had in the past. More than likely he’d return to his old self once his cubs were grown and gone, but for now I was appreciating the change. It made him easier to deal with.

IC: "Geez if I don't pick up the pace I'm going to be late," I said to myself as I checked the time on my phone, and continued to run. "I knew I should have went to sleep a little earlier last night, but hey then again nothing beats sleeping in and running to make sure I'm not late, its the perfect exercise," I said as I was continuing to talk to myself. At this point I started to run faster so that I wouldn't be late. I was very excited to be going on this run through the park, I hadn't been to the park in quite some time, and the last time I was at Deckbi it was a disaster, I encountered almost nothing I wanted to catch, and it made me decide to leave the park early.

As I got close to the dock I decided I had enough time where I could walk now, rather than run, though if I walked by myself it could either get very lonely or boring, I also didn't want to keep talking to myself, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to let out one of my Pokemon and let it walk alongside me as I got closer. I only had one Pokemon on hand that could actually walk along with me, one of my two most treasured Pokemon, Ambipom. "Get on out here Ambipom," I said as I pulled out Ambipom's Pokeball and let it out to walk with me.

A bit more time passed, and before I knew it I was at the designated location. I looked around and took notice that my ranger was watching some Pokemon playing with each other, I was a bit hesitant to go interrupt, but then again it would look weird if my ranger ended up looking and saw Ambipom and me just standing here, if anything it would look more creepy then weird the more I thought about it, so I wasted no time in going up.

I knocked on the outside wall to get their attention. "Hello, I'm Eric, and this is my Ambipom. I can safely assume that you're my ranger?" I asked the woman who was standing here, and waited for her response.

Dagger scooped his infant up when a young man with an Ambipom entered the lobby, but after a few moments of staring at the Trainer, he deigned it safe to let his cub continue to play. The little Zorua wiggled to get free and let out another squeak as her father put her down. She ran in circles around Dagger before jumping on his tails, batting at the tips. I chuckled and shook my head, glancing at the Trainer who'd entered when he knocked on the wall.

"Hello, I'm Eric, and this is my Ambipom. I can safely assume that you're my ranger?" he asked. I looked down at the profile picture in the the information on the desk, seeing this young man was indeed the Trainer I was leading through the Park today. I looked back up at him and smiled, pushing my hair from my eyes and nodding at him once.

"Yep, that's me. My name is Trainer Sara and I'll be leading you around Mount Deckbi today." I stepped around the reception desk and clapped my hands together to get Dagger's attention. He gently grabbed his cub and trotted over, ignoring the baby fox's insistent struggles to get down and continue playing.

"Do you feel like going with me this time or do you want to stay behind with Trickster and the cubs?" Dagger frowned a little, glancing back towards the staff room where Trickster was with the other babies. He hadn't gone with me for several weeks since he'd been so occupied with helping take care of his young, but I knew he wanted to start getting back into the habit of helping lead Trainers through the Park. I smiled a little and patted his baby on the head, earning a happy little yelp from her. "I think she's old enough to come with us. You can ask Trickster, I'm sure she'd think it a good practice-run for when the babies are released."

Dagger nodded and headed off to speak with Trickster, and I faced Eric with a smile.

"Sorry, this'll just take a moment."

A few minutes later Dagger returned, looking quite happy. I figured Trickster had agreed to letting the cub come with us. Dagger held her out to me and I accepted the furry black Pokemon, then grabbed Dagger's PokeBall from where it was sitting on the reception desk. I recalled him, put his Ball in my pocket, and headed over to one of the new Transport Tiles. These spiffy things mimicked the Teleport move and had taken some time to get installed. With them, though, people were able to get around the Park faster without having to rely on a Teleporting Pokemon to take them.

I waved for Eric and his Pokemon to join us, and once we were all present I activated the Transport Tile. In a flash we were whisked from the lobby and reappeared at the Ranger Outpost for Mt. Deckbi. To the south the mountain towered into the sky, a thin, hazy black cloud rising from its summit. I set Dagger's cub down and she flounced around my legs, hyperactive from the sudden change in scenery. I then released Dagger from his PokeBall, having recalled him because the Transport Tiles freaked him out. Instantly he grabbed up his baby (I hadn't named them yet but I secretly thought of this one as Kili) and gave her a gentle but firm tap on the nose, obviously telling her to be careful and listen to him. Kili gave a tiny whimper but then licked at Dagger's claw, at which point the Floatzel let her back down.

I clapped my hands afterward, grinning at Eric and Ambipom.

"Well then, ready to get started with your visit?"

OOC: I'll make better posts as time goes on, I just need to get use to doing this again

IC: Once I asked if she was my ranger, this young woman turned to me, nodded, and said "yep, that's me. My name is Trainer Sara and I'll be leading you around Mount Deckbi today." After she said this she turned back to her Pokemon, and started to talk with them to figure out which would be accompanying her on this trip. This gave me some time with my thoughts while I waited. I just went ahead and thought of the same things that I always think before starting a run, and that was what Pokemon would I encounter? There were several I would catch if encountered, though I know for sure I wanted was Litwick. For sometime now I wanted to capture two Litwick's, because I wanted not only a Chandelure, but I also wanted a Litwick that I would keep as a Litwick, I don't know why, but I liked the idea of having a Litwick to go around with.

After waiting for a minute or so Sara turned to me with a smile and said, "sorry, this'll just take a moment." It wasn't a problem waiting though, I knew she had some things he had to get settled before going, so waiting wasn't an issue. I was only waiting for a few minutes, so while I waited at this point I just looked at Ambipom play with its tails.

Ambipom and myself where then waved over shortly after this point. We were all then transported from our current location to the Outpost for Mt. Deckbi. Teleporting always seemed kind of freaky to me, I knew there was no faster and easier way to travel, but still it was just weird doing it. Was we were here Sara let her Floatzel out of its Pokeball again, and then clapped her hands before turning to me and saying, "well then, ready to get started with your visit?" "Yeah, you bet. I'm ready, and excited to get started," I happily replied.

I smiled at Eric’s eagerness and headed towards the mountain before us, Dagger and Kili running ahead of us. Kili never got very far as she kept stopping to inspect every rock and stray clump of stiff dry grass, so the going was actually a bit slow as she kept falling behind. Dagger sighed as he watched her flomping around, but I could tell from his body language that he was enjoying his daughter’s enthusiasm.

We continued on, drawing closer to the base of the mountain. When the beginning of the upward-spiraling trail was about five yards away, Kili darted over to a bright red rock with a strange yellow mark that looked like a long ‘M’ on it. As she raised a paw to bat at it, Dagger and I realized what it was at the same time. I let out a wordless shout and he barked out, “Float!” at the same time, but it was too late. Kili swiped at the “rock”, then yelped in shock when it stirred and peered up at her.

For the rock was not a rock at all, but a Darumaka!

The little Zen Charm Pokemon yawned, obviously having been napping here, and got to its hazel-colored feet. Its large, bushy yellow eyebrows gave it a comical appearance, as did the black rings around its eyes and the smile curving its lips. Three small yellow marks adorned its chest as it stretched, then started to jig from foot to foot. Dagger stared hard at the smaller Pokemon as it danced towards Kili, who squeaked in the most adorable manner before dashing over to it. The two romped around for a moment and Dagger visibly relaxed; Darumaka was obviously a happy-go-lucky kind of Pokemon who just wanted to play. After a moment the Fire-type noticed Eric and Ambipom, cocking its head at them and waving its arms at them. From its attitude it looked like it was, in the very least, interested in checking them out.

“Hey Eric,” I said to him as Kili tried getting Darumaka’s attention back. Dagger came over and tapped her head, muttering something at her (most likely telling her not to bother a Wild Pokemon if there was a chance a Trainer wanted to battle it). Kili sulked for a moment before dashing over to me, sitting by my legs and pawing at my shoestrings. “Silly girl…oh, yeah. That Darumaka looks interested in you guys, Eric. Wanna try battling it?”

The trip through the park began and as we started to go along early Sara was leading the way with a few of her Pokemon, one in particular stood out to me, Zorua. Zorua was playing around at any chance it got almost as if it was a child, the Floatzel that took the lead seemed to be pretty protective of it based on what I had seen so far. I supposed there was the chance that Zorua was indeed a baby Pokemon and Floatzel was one of its parents, but I felt weird asking and instead turned to Ambipom who I started to talk to a bit. "So Ambipom, what do you think this years football season is going to look like?" I don't know why I asked Ambipom something like this when I knew it couldn't speak back to me since only Psychic, as well as some Dark-types, were the only ones who could communicate using their mind, but still that didn't stop me from talking to Ambipom, I generally would let it out of its Pokeball if I was watching something like football or wrestling since it seemed to enjoy the both of those. Ambipom turned to me and just went on to say "Ambi, Ambi, Ambipom," if I had to guess then I would guess that this meant Ambipom was excited, so I just turned to it smile and nodded as we continued along the way.

As we continued to walk I thought about using my Litwick Voice Disc, but I figured I'd wait until after my first encounter just out of curiosity, because for all I knew it could have been a Litwick. We kept going on before coming to what looked like a rock, Sara's Zorua took a swipe at it but then the object let out a yelp and revealed itself to actually be a Darumaka. This Darumaka let out a yawn signaling that it was either napping, or at the very least trying to nap before it was woken up. It didn't take long for it to notice me and Ambipom standing here. "Hey Eric," Sara said to me before her attention was taken away by Zorua. Zorua tried to get Darumaka's attention back on itself, but Floatzel went over and hit it on its head, leaving the Zorua to go running back to its trainer. “Silly girl…oh, yeah. That Darumaka looks interested in you guys, Eric. Wanna try battling it?” Sara asked, now that she had her attention back.

"Sure I'll gladly battle this thing," I replied, of course though I didn't know what I would use right now. I had three Pokemon on me; Ambipom, Aerodactyl, and Starmie. Personally I enjoyed saving Ambipom for bigger, tougher battles since it was my most experience Pokemon in terms of battling. This left me with Aerodactyl and Starmie, both of which would be more than capable of dealing with this Fire-type Pokemon, but if I did encounter a Litwick or one of its evolved forms down the road then they could deal with Starmie since Ghost beats Psychic, so I figured it would be best to use Starmie for this fight.

"Come on, get on out here and have a good time Starmie!" I yelled as I tossed Starmie's Pokeball in the air. Before long the star shaped Pokemon appeared letting out its cry. Starmie wasn't all that experienced in battles yet compared to some of my other Pokemon, but when it was in battle it proved itself to easily hold its ground with its opponents without needed to stall, this was more or less due to its varied movepool.

"Hmm what should I have you do first, I wonder," I said to myself as I looked at Starmie. "Alright I got it," I said after figuring out what to have Starmie do. "First start off with a Light Screen, and then lets follow up with a Bubblebeam attack, Starmie," I told the Pokemon who I think understood the commands, it was hard to tell since it was a faceless Pokemon.

Starmie got into position and created a pink barrier that would disappear for now, but when it was hit by a Special Attack the Light Screen would reappear and Starmie would only feel half the damage from the attack. I always figured though that rather than only half the damage being felt only half the attack actually made it past the Light Screen and hit the Pokemon, this is the same thing as only feeling half the damage from the attack so it was very possible, but then again I was probably the only one who actually thought this way.

Once this was done Starmie got ready to use Bubblebeam. Bubblebeam was an enhanced version of the attack Bubble, the main difference was that Bubblebeam moved at a faster speed than Bubble, and also moved with more force while using more bubbles, so as such this was a stronger attack that dealt more damage. Bubblebeam also carried a chance to lower the opposing Pokemon's speed, this was a nice second effect if the opposing Pokemon was faster than the one using Bubblebeam. In this situation I figured it would be best to start with a move like Bubblebeam, a move that isn't too strong that it would knock Darumaka out in one shot, but still powerful enough that Darumaka would feel some damage from it. I was considering using Surf, but I figured that starting off with a move like one with that much power could do too much damage, but at the same time I wanted to use a move that Starmie got STAB from so Bubblebeam just seemed like the perfect choice. Starmie shot the attack at Darumaka once it was ready, and as I figured the bubbles were moving fast, but not so fast that they would hit in a split second. I liked to start a lot of battles out in a big way, and this one seemed like it was going to be good once it got going.

Eric released his Starmie, deciding that the ten-armed starfish would be the best candidate against Darumaka. From what I’d read in his records, Eric’s Starmie was one of his lesser-experienced Pokmeon. Even so, it was a fully-evolved Water Pokemon against a first-stage Fire Pokemon, so even a lack of experience may not hinder Starmie’s performance here.

The Jolly starfish was commanded to use a Light Screen move, followed by a Bubblebeam. I wondered at Eric’s reasoning a bit; Darumaka had many more Physical attacks in their arsenal than Special ones, so it was unlikely it would use enough to warrant a Light Screen, if it used any at all. Despite this, Starmie was more than happy to comply. It focused its Psychic energies and created a hot-pink barrier that fizzled from view a moment after appearing. I knew it was still there, though. Right now it was inactive.

Darumaka wasn’t just standing by idly, though. The moment Starmie was released, the little Zen Charm Pokemon started to hop from foot to foot in a rhythmic manner, closing its eyes as it did so. I knew instantly it was using Focus Energy, which would let it be more intent on its battle and possibly strike Starmie’s weak spots more often. The two Pokemon finished their moves at roughly the same time, with Darumaka opening its eyes just as Starmie fired its Bubblebeam.

Caught momentarily off-guard by the attack, Darumaka was somewhat slow to react. After a second it curled into a ball and rolled away from the stream of translucent bubbles, but the time it had spent staring meant it didn’t fully evade the move. Several of the Bubblebeam’s leading bubbles popped against Darumaka’s side and back as it rolled to the right, messing up its balance and knocking it over. Darumaka let out a muffled grunt as it was flipped onto its back, but it recovered quickly enough. It got to its feet, dusting itself off and turning to face Starmie. It then inhaled a deep breath and blew out a brilliant stream of reddish-blue flames. Instead of remaining that way, though, the fire broke itself apart and formed several dozen small orbs. These spiraled towards Starmie in an erratic pattern; it was impossible to tell where any of the orbs might end up.

Clearly happy with its Will-o-Wisp, Darumaka gave itself a thumbs up and did a bit of a dance, though it never took its attention off its opponent.

IC: I was impressed with what I saw from Starmie so far. Not only did it manage to deal some damage with its Bubblebeam attack, but it also was able to avoid Darumaka's Will-o-Wisp attack, an attack this if it hit would burn Starmie, not only cutting Starmie's Attack in half, but also slowly dealing it damage with every passing move, something that wouldn't be very good as time went on. However Darumaka looked like it still had a lot more strength left than I gave it credit for, perhaps I underestimated it just because it was a Fire-type going up against a Water-type, I wouldn't think lightly of Darumaka again, it was obviously bulkier than I thought it was.

"Alright Starmie, that was good, but lets use something a bit stronger this time around. So now Starmie use Waterfall," I told my Starmie. While Waterfall was in fact more powerful than Bubblebeam, Starmie was better off using Special Attacks rather than Physical, but I always liked to try out different things and see where they got me. Waterfall was certainly a handy attack, not only did it have a powerful force for being a Physical Water attack, but it also carried a chance to make the opposing flinch, that reason alone was one of the main reasons that Waterfall was commonly used, if it managed to score a flinch then the trainer's Pokemon that got the flinch got a free attack in on the opponent, this could usually change the entire foundation of the battle because it isn't often that you're able to get a free attack in without needed to worry about a counterattack.

As its name suggest Waterfall looked exactly like it sounded, like a big waterfall. The user summoned up a giant wall of water, and slammed it against the opposing Pokemon with great force. I always assumed that a Pokemon could flinch from this move because once the Waterfall crashed into them they had little time to act and free them from it, and if they didn't then the water would hold them down until the attack disappeared entirely. Of course Waterfall also had a practical use outside of battle too, it could be used to climb Waterfalls, an obstacle that would otherwise be impossible to pass.

Starmie started to let out a cry, and the jewel on the center of its body began to glow symbolizing that Starmie was ready to use the attack. Darumaka seemed to be more interested in having a good time rather than trying to beat Starmie, this of course could have just been a facade and Darumaka was just waiting for the right moment to strike Starmie, it was next to impossible to tell due to Darumaka being a wild Pokemon. Whatever was going through Darumaka's mind though I knew one thing, it was going to be interesting to see what it does in this situation.

OOC: A few things to point out here. First and most importantly is that Starmie never dodged the Will-o-Wisp; I didn’t RP it out as doing so. Other than the occasional exception, most of the time a Trainer is given the chance to dodge an attack used by a Wild Pokemon. If a Ranger doesn’t specifically state that an attack hits the Trainer’s, that means it’s the Trainer’s job to attempt dodging the attack and countering with one of their own.

Also, keep in mind your surroundings when trying different moves. In an arid area like Mt. Deckbi, there’s going to be very little water for Starmie to “summon” in order to use Waterfall. It might try to use its Psychic power to gather water vapor from the air, but that would take a bit of energy and would also need to be RP’ed with more detail in order to explain exactly what Starmie was doing.

Starmie didn’t make any attempts to avoid the Will-o-Wisp, but somehow all the little balls of fire seemed to miss it. I watched Eric for a moment, wondering if he’d noticed the fact that the balls had curved away from Starmie when they should have hit. It didn’t seem like he was aware of the fact and ordered his Starmie to use Waterfall. I scowled a little at the choice of attacks; there were no bodies of water for Starmie to draw upon, and the low level of humidity in the air would probably be insufficient for creating a very powerful blow. Even if it did, Darumaka was an unevolved Fire Pokemon, and even though Starmie’s Physical power wasn’t very high, Waterfall was still a strong move. The use of such a high-strength move on a Fire Pokemon seemed like a poor choice, but perhaps Eric had a reason for it.

Either way, within a few moments Starmie’s bright crimson jewel began to flash rapidly, a sign it was getting ready to attack. It was drawing the moisture in the air to itself to use, but it was taking time for it to pull together enough water to do substantial damage with. Darumaka, seeing a chance to strike, let out a chittering little laugh and curled into a ball once more. He spun in place for a second to build up speed, then shot towards Starmie as a red blur. When he was about two feet away he bounced into the air, smacking right into Starmie’s glimmering jewel. It wasn’t a very strong blow, but it was enough to break Starmie’s concentration and interrupt its attack. It also threw Starmie back a few feet…

…Right into the balls of fire that had earlier curved around Starmie and missed it. Darumaka had been setting up a trap, it seemed, and because Eric hadn’t been paying attention to the Will-o-Wisp after it missed his Pokemon, it had been easy for Darumaka to create a nasty but effect surprise for its opponent.

Starmie made a soft sound as the balls of ghostly fire engulfed its limbs, sinking into the starfish and inflicting a burn on it. Darumaka, hitting the ground in a still-spinning ball, rotated in place for a second before abruptly shooting off after Starmie once more. The Rollout would continue for several more minutes, getting stronger with each consecutive hit. If it managed to hit each time, there was a chance Starmie might end up getting knocked out. Eric had to act much more carefully now; with a Burned Pokemon and his target’s Rollout, things could end up bad for Starmie very quickly.

OOC: Like I said on AIM sorry, I'm just kind of rusty.

IC: "Wow, I'm a freaking idiot," I said as I smacked my head. "What the hell was I thinking by making Starmie use Waterfall when there wasn't even a body of water around?" I couldn't help but bash myself after having Starmie use an attack that was completely worthless, and to make matters worse Starmie had now in fact been burned by Darumaka's Will-o-Wisp attack, and it was using Rollout, a move that doubled in power each time that it hit. Things were looking very bad for the time being, and I wasn't entirely sure if I could fix the mess I had gotten myself into, but I knew that I at least needed to try to fix things, because even if I had a one percent chance of making things look better then I would sure act on that opportunity no matter what.

"Hey Starmie, you feeling alright?" I asked as I walked over to it. Starmie just let out a cry to let me know it wanted to keep battling, but I knew it was hurting from its burn. "I should have had you use Magic Coat when I had the chance, I know Fire-types can't be burned, but it would have at least saved you from getting burned yourself, I'm sorry," I said to Starmie very apologetically, I felt bad because I know I was the cause of this whole thing, it wouldn't have shocked me if Starmie didn't want to keep taking commands from me after I was so stupid, but I knew once again that I had to at least attempt to make progress, and now I had a decent idea of how.

"Okay now Starmie, first start off by using a Cosmic Power so you'll take less damage from Darumaka's attacks, and then follow up with a Hydro Pump to make up for my blunder last set of moves," Starmie seemed to understand what I told it to do. I figured this would be a good idea in comparison to my other idiotic ideas so far such as using Light Screen, and Waterfall when both are essentially useless. By doing this combo Starmie would boost both of Starmie's defenses, not just Special Defense. Once that was done I figured Hydro Pump would be the best attack due to Waterfall failing, seeing as how Hydro Pump was nearly double the power of Bubblebeam so I figured that would more than make up for the failed Waterfall. All I know is that I was mostly glad that Starmie was known for being a Special Attacker, rather than a Physical one, otherwise the burn on it would prove to be even more deadly.

Starmie started to use Cosmic Power. The way Cosmic Power looked always fascinated me, the whole surrounding area looked as though it turned into space, it was actually kind of freaky to know that this move could change the way the whole area looked when used, so as such it could only be used by Psychic-type Pokemon, or Pokemon related to space such as Clefairy. After the area changed in looks pink and purple stars started to rise up from under the Pokemon using the move to symbolize that it was increasing its defense. Once this was done Starmie was to instantly use its Hydro Pump attack. Hydro Pump was like a much more stronger version of Water Gun, while Water Gun looked exactly like its name sounded, water being shot with force that comes from a water gun, Hydro Pump looked like it had five times that much force while having three times as much power. If Water Gun resembled a toy water gun being used, then Hydro Pump resembled a fire hydrant when its gushing out water. The Pokemon would typically fire this massive circular wave of water from their mouth, but in Starmie's case it would be shot from its gem on the center of its body.

I didn't exactly expect Darumaka to stand still for Starmie to use both moves, but who knew it might have been curious and I needed to at least try this idea out because the burn on Starmie was slowly sapping its health, and Rollout was only going to get stronger and stronger. If I didn't at least attempt to use these two moves Darumaka would easily gain the upper hand on Starmie, and I was not ready to allow that to happen.

Eric seemed to realize that his strategy up until now hadn’t really been very effective, but it seemed he was ready to try switching things up. After apologizing to Starmie, the young man had Starmie use Cosmic Power to boost the Pokemon’s defenses. Kili whimpered a little and scampered over to Dagger, frightened when the afternoon sunlight was replaced by the dark of a starry evening. Her father scooped her up and mumbled soothing things at her, giving Eric and Starmie a slightly irritated expression. I smiled at him and shrugged, then turned back to Starmie. A series of brilliant flashes were sparkling around it, a physical manifestation of the boost Starmie was receiving.

Starmie’s next order of business was a Hydro Pump. Making use of an internal reservoir, Starmie threw out the jewel on the middle of its body and released a massive blast of sparkling clear liquid. Whether hearing the roar of the attack or sensing its approach, Darumaka, who was spinning right in the path of the attack, abruptly rolled to the left. Unfortunately, there was a large rock in that direction that Darumaka rolled right into. The stone threw Darumaka’s perilous balance off, causing him to go tumbling for several feet before coming to a rest on his belly.

This turned out to work in his favor since he was still in the path of Starmie’s Hydro Pump; the attack clipped his back but, for the most part, missed the small Zen Charm Pokemon. Grunting, Darumaka rolled onto his stomach and got to his feet, shaking himself off and seemingly nonplussed by the darkly, lingering effect of Starmie’s earlier Cosmic Power. Instead, the little Pokemon raised an orange paw to his mouth and inhaled loudly, throwing out his chest as he Yawned. After that he patted his stomach and bent over, encasing his paws in fire and beginning to rip up the ground. Within a few moments the little creature had vanished underground with his Dig move.

Eric had to be especially careful now. Starmie was drooping a little after Darumaka’s Yawn, and if it fell asleep on top of being burned, it wouldn’t last long at all against its smaller opponent. I hoped the starfish’s Trainer had some method of distracting his Pokemon from its sleepiness as well as helping it locate Darumaka.

OOC: This is just cruel D: are you trying to make me jump off the mountain? I should warn you I can't creatively think of a way to help Starmie so, but uhh sorry if there is something wrong with how I did the move, it was just the only way I could think to do things with psychic powers, so if you want I'll edit it

IC: Starmie hadn't been able to do much of anything against this Darumaka, its Hydro Pump hardly put a dent in it at all, Starmie was feeling the effects of burn, Darumaka dug itself underground where it was hiding in wait to use dig, and to top the whole thing off Darumaka Yawned Starmie which means that Starmie would end up falling asleep in no time. This truly was a grave situation to be in, Starmie was completely being outmatched by Darumaka, and anything I thought of only prolonged things. If I had Starmie use Recover it would heal to full health sure, but its burn would still be in place and it would still fall asleep. I knew I could always have Starmie just switch out and that would cure it of its burn, but I wasn't so sure that I wanted to use two Pokemon so early into the run to just defeat one Pokemon. This really was something I needed some time to think over, unfortunately time was a luxury that I couldn't afford currently. I had to think as fast as I could and act on my feet otherwise Starmie was a goner.

"Ugh, if only I had decided to use Magic Coat, that's the second time now that I should have used it but didn't," I said to myself feeling like I should have predicted what Darumaka would do. I tried to convince myself it was just going to keep using Rollout, but I should have known that using Hydro Pump would ruin Rollout seeing as how it made Darumaka roll right into a rock causing the interruption.

I had come up with a way of maybe locating Darumaka, but it was kind of crazy and a long shot, plus I still really had no way as of yet to help Starmie not fall asleep. I thought that it was too bad that this was Mt. Deckbi, had it been somewhere with water I could have easily just thrown Starmie in the water or thrown water on it to help it, but sadly I didn't have access to such a thing. So I now stood with a choice in front of me, let Starmie try to damage Darumaka and fall asleep, or switch Starmie out so its aliments will heal but leave my next mon vulnerable to Darumaka's attack. I was a fighter though and I believed in my Pokemon, I was going to do what I could, encourage Starmie to try its hardest and hope for the best.

"Alright Starmie, you're doing wonderful, don't let the bad luck you've encounter so far, or my stupid mistakes keep you down. I believe in your power, and what you can do, now lets try one more thing and see how it goes!" I yelled to Starmie hoping that I could motivate it to try really hard on this next move, it was pretty tricky to say the least. "You've been using too many Water-type moves so far, so they would be obvious, what I want you to do is go over to the hole in which Darumaka and use your psychic powers to the best of your ability when doing this. Use Power Gem down the hole Starmie!" I told Starmie. Now doing something like this is very risky indeed, not only could it fail, but Starmie would fall asleep more than likely and be a sitting duck for Darumaka. I didn't want to think this way though, I had faith in Starmie's psychic abilities, and it could pull this off, I just needed a little hope and luck.

Starmie started to glow and seemed like it was concentrating, it was probably trying its hardest to exactly locate Darumaka, if it couldn't it would just be blindly firing its attack underground and it could end up anywhere. The reason I wanted Starmie to try a Power Gem rather than a Water-type attack again was because I figured Darumaka would be expecting a Water-type attack not a move like Power Gem, plus the attack was also small enough where it could travel around underground without destroying anything. Power Gem was a Rock-type attack which is generally only seen being used by a Pokemon who has a gem, or something that resembles a gem such as a rock looking gem, somewhere on their body, the gem would glow brightly and it would materialize several silver glowing rocks and sent them flying after the opponent. This was a move that when used was very hard to dodge all over because there were multiple rock gems to avoid. Using this was my only option right now, I saw it as my only chance to strike Darumaka, I just hoped that I wasn't wrong with my trust in Starmie, but I doubted that, I had faith in my decision here.

OOC: A Wild Park Post appeared! XD Sorry it took a few days to get this up.

Also look on the bright side; you have a fairly good number of extra characters to help w/ your capture rate now :D. EXTRA CHARACTERS FTW.

This would be it, the final exchange of blows in this battle. If Starmie couldn’t pull off its next attack before falling asleep, Darumaka would be free to attack as he pleased, and Starmie was already in bad shape. It definitely couldn’t handle too much more abuse, and so I was glad to see Eric come up with a rather ingenious method for getting a bit of payback against the Pokemon that had, until this point, been leading the battle in terms of the advantage.

Seeming to realize there was little he could do to help Starmie other than switch the starfish out, Eric decided to make the best of a bad situation and commanded his Pokemon to fire a Power Gem attack down the tunnel Darumaka had created, controlling the stones using Psychic powers. Starmie, clearly feeling the effects of its burn as well as the pressing sleepiness, wobbled over to the hole Darumaka had vanished into. Its body started to glow brightly for a few moments, a physical signal that Starmie was implementing its special powers to locate Darumaka. It must have found its target because a moment later, silver stones began to emerge from Starmie’s jewel. It looked painful but I knew there was no real sensation to the move, other than perhaps a strange tingling where the stones were coming out (I’d asked many Pokemon if the move hurt to use and they had all answered no). About a dozen of these small, oddly-shaped projectiles were pushed from Starmie’s jewel, all of them hovering motionlessly in the air. Kili, seeming to get over her initial fear of the forced nighttime expanse, tried to sneak onto the battlefield to inspect one of those stones. Dagger was quick to snatch her up, though, firmly but gently reprimanding the little Zorua.

By the time Dagger was done with that, Starmie looked about ready to keel over. Luckily, most Psychic Pokemon seemed to have extremely strong mental fortitude, and it was probably for this reason alone that Starmie was still awake. Drooping to the point of nearly falling over, the starfish feebly wiggled two of its arms, sending the Power Gem attack hurtling into the hole Darumaka had made. For a few seconds nothing happened, but then I heard a muffled blast and a startled cry coming from the hole. It seemed that Eric’s idea had worked perfectly; the enclosed space had meant most, if not all, of Starmie’s attack had hit its target.

A moment later Starmie tottered back from the hole several steps before the effect of Darumaka’s Yawn overcame it. With a sound like a sigh, the starfish fell over backwards, sending up a small cloud of dust when it hit the ground. The remaining effect of its Cosmic Power ended and I blinked several times as the area returned to normal, bright sunshine replacing the midnight darkness. After wiping away tears from my stinging eyes, I watched Starmie for signs that it might still be able to continue the battle. The starfish was completely immobile, though, and obviously fast asleep.

At that moment, Darumaka staggered out of the hole it had first vanished into, looking dazed and weak. He had obviously taken a fair amount of damage from Starmie’s last attack and had been either too stunned or weakened too much to dig an exit, thus he had been forced to emerge from his initial point of entry into the ground. The little Zen Charm Pokemon blinked owlishly at the light stabbing into his darkness-accustomed eyes, then sat down heavily and stared off into space.

“It looks like that last attack hit Darumaka pretty hard,” I commented. “It probably landed a critical hit, so even if the initial attack wasn’t very strong, it still did a pretty hefty amount of damage.” Now would be the time for Eric to attempt a capture, since Darumaka, in his stunned state, would temporarily be incapable of trying to run or fight. If everything went as planned it would be a good chance for Eric to tend to Starmie as well.

OOC: It's cool you were PROBABLY busy with something so.

Also since this is just a capture post I'm typing it on my iPod, yeah just giving that heads up

IC: My idea worked according to plan, Starmie managed to deal some massive damage to Darumaka, unfortunately this didn't come without a cost, Starmie had fallen asleep, though it seemed to do enough damage to weaken Darumaka enough for a capture.

"You rest easy now Starmie, you earned it. I'm going to return you to your ball so you can heal yourself, and should the time come again during this trip that I need you I'll make sure to take better steps to protecting you during battle," I said to Starmie as I planned to return it to it's ball, however I figured first thing was first and I should attempt to capture Darumaka while I had the chance.

"You sure gave me a lot of trouble," I said to Darumaka as I pulled an empty Parkball out of my backpack. "You've got a nice playful side, but you've also got a fighting spirit, and that is very good. Let's see how much fight you have in you at this point though," I said as I made the ball full size, and tossed it at Darumaka. I always wondered when I attempted to capture anything if I had done enough damage, and this time was no exception. I guess I was always just a little paranoid, but still looking at Darumaka as I threw the ball I figured Starmie had done more than enough.

Eric recalled his Starmie, which in itself was one of the best things he could have done for it. The Pokemon’s Natural Cure Ability would allow it to rest deeply when not in battle, healing its status conditions and allowing it to recover a bit. Afterward he chucked a ParkBall at the dazed Darumaka; the little Zen Charm Pokemon was sucked into the Ball, which gave a single feeble roll before coming to a rest.

I walked over to the now-occupied ParkBall and picked it up, placing it in a special contained attached to the left side of my belt. I then smiled at Eric, not giving him a chance to be freaked out before explaining what I was doing.

“There were some issues with poachers disguising themselves as Trainers, and after catching several Pokemon they’d run off with all of them instead of the allowed three,” I told him. “As a result, the Head Ranger made a rule that Rangers are to carry any captured Pokemon until the Trainer decides to leave, at which point they’ll pick the ones they want to take with them. So don’t worry, I’m not trying to steal the little guy or anything.”

I then heard an excited little yelp and turned around, seeing Kili romping about near the foot of the path that wound up the mountain. Dagger shook his head at his daughter, though I saw him smiling as he went over to join her. I glanced back at Eric and nodded towards the towering mass of stone and lava before us.

“You wanna go up the path for now, or start going through the cave network?”

Darumaka was caught with ease, it didn't struggle to escape from the ball or anything. The creature was clearly worn out from the battle, and now it could get a lot of much needed rest, similar to Starmie.

Right after it was caught Sara picked up the ball, and placed it on her belt, she then turned to me, smiled, and said, “there were some issues with poachers disguising themselves as Trainers, and after catching several Pokemon they’d run off with all of them instead of the allowed three,” I told him. “As a result, the Head Ranger made a rule that Rangers are to carry any captured Pokemon until the Trainer decides to leave, at which point they’ll pick the ones they want to take with them. So don’t worry, I’m not trying to steal the little guy or anything.”

I chuckled a little, and replied with, "no need to explain, I know you don't intend to steal from me, I've been through here enough to know that by now. All you rangers seem to be good, honest people, so I trust you."

Sara then took the time to look at her Pokemon again. Zorua seemed to be very enthusiastic, and Floatzel seemed to just shake its head, I couldn't help but laugh at the nature of Pokemon sometimes, and this was one of those times.

Sara looked back at me, and asked, "you wanna go up the path for now, or start going through the cave network?"

"I think I'd prefer to go up the path now," I replied to her, but before she had a chance to reply I also added, "I also have this Litwick Voice Disc I'd like to attempt to use along the way, who knows I might be able to attract the little thing to me," I said as I pulled my PokePlayer out, and put my Litwick Voice Disc in it.

"I think I'd prefer to go up the path now. I also have this Litwick Voice Disc I'd like to attempt to use along the way, who knows I might be able to attract the little thing to me," Eric told me, pulling forth a PokePlayer and a purple Voice Disc. He popped the small disc into the Player and then hit the Play button; a moment later a lilting, somewhat haunting cry issued from the Player. It wasn’t the normal speech of a Litwick, but more of a primitive ululation, the kind of bestial noise an animal would make to call it pack or herd together. The point of recording these cries was to lure Pokemon to the source, who would come to investigate the cry in some cases.

The cry echoed for a few moments before fading away completely. No Litwick appeared, though, and I shrugged at the young man as I started towards the path leading up the mountain.

“Usually Litwick live further inside the mountain, so I’m not surprised none came to have a look around. You might have better luck inside the caves, or maybe a bit higher up where it’s hotter.” I motioned to the volcano and added, “Generally they don’t come out until it gets a bit darker, being Ghosts and all, but there’s a specific cave farther up that, if you stand a few feet in, you might be able to lure out a Litwick. That cave has peculiar ventilation, so it’s pretty hot. The Litwick love it so they congregate around it, even during the day sometimes.”

I played the sound from the Litwick disc, but no Litwick appeared. It was a little bit disheartening, I had came on this run with Litwick being one of the specific Pokemon that I was looking for. I wasn't going to have this minor setback keep me down though, there were still other things I wanted too.

As Sara started taking me up the path she told me something, “usually Litwick live further inside the mountain, so I’m not surprised none came to have a look around. You might have better luck inside the caves, or maybe a bit higher up where it’s hotter. “Generally they don’t come out until it gets a bit darker, being Ghosts and all, but there’s a specific cave farther up that, if you stand a few feet in, you might be able to lure out a Litwick. That cave has peculiar ventilation, so it’s pretty hot. The Litwick love it so they congregate around it, even during the day sometimes.”

"Is that so?" I asked. "Well if that is the case I'll be sure to try my voice disc out again when its a better chance of attracting one. In the meantime though lets see what else waits for me, I'm curious to see what I will run into," I said as I turned to Ambipom, and smiled.

I was feeling good, and motivated. I had already captured a Darumaka, and I was able to keep Starmie from taking too much damage, more importantly though I was having fun, and was enjoying the idea of thinking what might be in store for me throughout the remainder of this trip.

"Is that so? Well if that is the case I'll be sure to try my voice disc out again when it’s a better chance of attracting one. In the meantime though let’s see what else waits for me, I'm curious to see what I will run into," Eric commented, seemingly a nit more heartened now than he’d first been when his Litwick Disc failed to attract any of the spectral candles. I smiled a little in encouragement as Eric glanced at his Ambipom, then motioned for them to follow me.

We went up the trail, Dagger keeping an intent eye on Kili as we went higher up. If she romped too close to the edge of the trail he’d give a short, snappy sounding bark, cautioning her she was straying towards danger. Kili, despite her youthful abundance of energy and young age, was quick to mind her father’s warnings when they were given. Eventually she decided it would be safer playing on the inner side of the trail, sticking close the mountain itself as we travelled upward.

At one point she flounced out of view around a sharp corner, causing Dagger to sigh and shake his head. Grumbling (most likely about how he should invest in a leash), the Floatzel dropped to all fours and started to trot after the little Zorua. He didn’t have a chance to get far before a startled, high-pitched yelp sounded out; a second later Kili came scrambling back into sight. She ran right into her father, making frightened yapping noises and huddling closer to him. Dagger instantly went into overprotective-parent mode, snatching his daughter up and standing on his back paws, drawing himself to his full height and letting out a vicious, angry snarl.

“Oh boy…” I muttered, a hand going to my belt where my other Pokemon were stored. If Kili had angered something like a Garchomp or a Onix, I would need to give Dagger a bit of backup in chasing it off. An enraged Pokemon was a danger not only to my Trainer, but my Pokemon and itself as well, especially considering how far up the trail we were now. The last thing we needed was for one of us to get knocked back to the ground below.

Before I had a chance to let out any of my other Pokemon, though, the offending Pokemon came into view. I blinked a little when it turned out to be nothing more than a Mgaby, albeit a very irked-looking one. The small red creature had an angered expression and its little paws were curled into tight fists; a small tail whipped the air behind it. Steam was rising from its nostrils, and its snout was curled in an irritated grimace. I had no idea what Kili had done to anger the little Baby Pokemon so much so quickly, but whatever she’d done had been more than effective.

Dagger, however, didn’t seem to care that it was just a Magby that had so frightened his daughter. Growling, he took two steps towards the smaller Pokemon and gave it a sharp smack on the top of its head, barking at it angrily before turning and stalking away from it. Magby, completely taken aback, simply stared in shock as it grabbed at its head.

“Well, that was anti-climactic…” I said, shrugging as I dropped my hand from my belt. Dagger busied himself with consoling his scared daughter while I faced Eric, adding, “If you’ve ever wanted a Magmortar or anything, Magby is as good a place to start as any.”

    OOC: No harm done

IC: Sara started leading us up the path, and as always me and Ambipom patiently followed, wondering what we would encounter next. Though before we got to anything again Zorua appeared to being its curious self again. Zorua went around at corner, but before long it could be heard letting out a yelp, and it came running back to Floatzel and Sara.

Sara reached at her belt, probably to pull out a Pokemon if needed to defend Zorua, but I couldn't help but think that this was my run, and if anything should come into sight, whether Zorua angered it or not, it should be my responsibility to deal with it. Within seconds the Pokemon that scared Zorua came into sight. It was just a little Magby, I couldn't help but wonder how it could have so easily scared Zorua.

Floatzel seemed to be mad that this Magby scared Zorua, it went right over and smacked it on its head. Floatzel then went on to growl at it, and walk away. I couldn't help but laugh a bit at this situation. “Well, that was anti-climactic…” Sara said, as she turned her focus back to Floatzel, and Zorua. “If you’ve ever wanted a Magmortar or anything, Magby is as good a place to start as any.”

"No thanks, I'm interested in some rarer stuff, so I'd like to try to run from this, and if we can't I made sure to bring plenty of Pokedolls along just in case," I said to Sara as I reached in my bag, ready to grab a Pokedoll if needed.
