Thanks to already having a Garchomp, Eric decided against try to catch this one. I couldn’t say I blamed him, as only either very confident or very foolish Trainers would battle a Garchomp for no reason, even a young one like this. Instead, the young man opted to take a picture of the dark-scaled Pokemon, snapping a photo of it for later. When the flash went off it startled the Dragon, causing it to snarl in surprise before darting off into the shadows.

We continued on, and I took us down a tunnel that would lead back out to the exterior path. This high up it became traversable again, so it wouldn’t be a problem to continue outside. Along the way I pointed out various Pokemon that were hanging back or simply watching us pass by. A Charmeleon looked like it would give us trouble at one point, but it scurried off after nearly being knocked over by a powerful Aqua Jet from Dagger. The sea weasel then had to chase his daughter down, as she was trying to mimic her father’s attack.

Eventually the tunnel widened out into a large, spacious cave, with the mouth of it about twenty feet from us. I was getting ready to comment on heading back to the outer path when I spotted movement out of my peripheral vision to the left. Without thinking I instinctively looked over, not expecting anything more than a Sandshrew or something that was foraging for food. As I was turning my head, though, a stray beam of light from Kilia’s Will-o-Wisp reflected harshly off whatever was moving. Even before I saw what was there I had a feeling that things were potentially about to go downhill.

A massive Steelix was curled up not ten feet from us, its entire body clad in bright silver steel. If it hadn’t been in the deepest shadows of the cave it would have been spotted the instant we entered the area. The metal serpent was stirring from either a nap or a long sleep, its body beginning to uncurl as it woke. The movement I’d seen had been its tail twitching and flicking back and forth. Its large head was currently facing us, and even as I watched, its yellow eyes slowly slid open.

For a moment it didn’t do anything other than blink and continue to shift its large body, making a grating, metallic squealing noise as the different parts of its long body rubbed against each other. Eventually it had itself uncurled and rose a good fifteen feet of itself into the air. It opened its wide jaws, revealing huge, blunt teeth as it yawned. It then closed its maw and cocked its head down at us, rumbling in its chest. Thankfully it seemed more curious than annoyed; there were plenty of Pokemon who wouldn’t appreciate waking up to humans staring at them.

“I think this would be a good time to decide whether you want to fight this behemoth or if we should run screaming,” I told Eric, smiling just a little. Running and screaming wouldn’t get us far if this gargantuan Pokemon should decide to turn aggressive, but I had a feeling it wouldn’t come to that.

OOC: Hey its like I said on AIM last night, don't rush posting, you'll get to it when you do.

IC: Garchomp took over after its picture was snapped, and once again we were on our way. As we continued walking, Sara pointed out some Pokemon who seemed to just be sitting back and watching things. Most notable was a Charmeleon, but before anything happened, Sara's Floatzel gave it what for, and knocked it over with an Aqua Jet, causing it to leave. I didn't mind though, we hadn't exactly been passing anything I wanted that was looking to battle, though it wasn't much longer before we ran into a new Pokemon, one that could have easily been trouble.

A few feet in front of us was a curled up Pokemon. It was silver in color, and seemed to resemble a massive snake. It was a dual type Steel/Ground Pokemon, that, if used right, could prove to be a very dangerous Pokemon indeed. It was Steelix, a commonly underrated, yet very powerful Pokemon. It seemed like we had disturbed it from its sleep, however it looked like it was more curious than it was angry, as most Pokemon, or myself, would be if our sleep had been interrupted. It opened up its mouth wide, and let out a pretty big yawn, before looking back at us. It was a shame that I didn't have a Pokemon on me with a sleep inducing move, otherwise I'd use it to help Steelix get back to sleep.

“I think this would be a good time to decide whether you want to fight this behemoth or if we should run screaming,” Sara said to me with a small smile on her face. I could tell she was only kidding, as she tried to make the best of this situation. She must have known that battling a Steelix would be pretty hard work. Besides I hadn't been planning on going for a Steelix anyway, because before this whole thing started I sprayed a Rock-type repellent so I would avoid Rock-types, such as Onix, the pre-evolved form of a Steelix.

"No thanks," I said to Sara. "Running and screaming isn't exactly what I feel like doing, well, maybe if I scream enough my hair will turn golden, and grow long, but otherwise I have no interest in doing such a thing. I will, however take a picture of this Steelix," I said, as I once again took my camera out. It had been getting a lot of use this trip, this was the third Pokemon I aimed to take a picture of. Steelix was a rare Pokemon, just as rare as Garchomp was, so it would easily be a valuable picture. I set my sights on Steelix, and took its picture.

Eric was not only catching a few good Pokemon on his run, but he was going to make a nice amount of money from it as well. Already there’d been three Pokemon for him to take pictures of, and though a photo of neither Garchomp or Steelix could compare with the Reshiram snapshot, they’d go for more than enough to the right collector. I watched as Steelix shook its mighty body after the camera went off, then lowered back to the ground and slowly made its way down the tunnel we’d come from. Most likely it was going off to find a snack after waking up.

After Steelix departed, I led our group out onto the exterior path of the mountain. It twisted around and out of sight about five feet ahead, and though it was covered with a fine coating of ash, it was still clearly level and not covered with rocks and boulders like farther down.

I was ready to make a comment about the path further up, but at that moment fate decided to yet again not give me the chance to speak. A din of barking and high-pitching yipping was the only warning we had before several small orange canines came rushing into view from around the corner ahead of us. Each one had numerous jagged black stripes on its body and legs; thick, cream-colored fur made up their manes and tails. They were frolicking happily as they approached, but when they noticed us the lot of them froze for a moment. They then did an abrupt about-face, dashing back the way they’d come.

All except one.

The single Growlithe stared at us for a moment, obviously curious. It sniffed at us and took a cautious step forward, cocking its head as its gaze flicked between each of us. Clearly this little Pokemon was more interested in us than scared of us, which made a good opportunity for Eric to add a third Pokemon to his collection.

“These Growlithe are too old to still be staying with their mother,” I told Eric. “Most likely they’re siblings from the same litter, remaining together for the next few months before splitting up to find a bit of their own territory to claim. This one’s at the perfect age to catch if you’ve ever wanted an Arcanine.”

Steelix took off after I snapped its picture. It went down the way we had came, and it was out of sight before I knew it. We didn't wait around long though, Sara started leading me along once more. She led me out onto an exterior part of the mountain. It twisted for a few feet, and was covered by ash, but it didn't appear as though it was going to be hard to move around, because it did look rock free. Sara looked as though she was about to say something, but was then cut off. What cut her off was a group of puppy like Pokemon, barking at us. They all had orange colored fur, with black stripes on various spots of their body, as well as some of their body being cream in color, particularly their tails, bellies, and the fur on the top of their heads. It was a group of Growlithe. Upon noticing us though they ran back the way they came, well all but one did. One stuck around, and it seemed pretty interested in us.

"Well, I'm not entirely sure I want a Growlithe. I mean I do want a Growlithe, but at the same time something I want more could be out there waiting for me, but nothing else I want could still be out there. Well, I guess its a good thing I brought some extra balls on this trip, so yes I'll battle this Growlithe then," I said to Sara as I pulled out one of my Pokeballs. It should have been no surprise which Pokemon I'd be using, it was the only one who hadn't seen any action on this trip until now.

"You're up Aerodactyl," I said, as the dual Rock/Flying-type Pokemon emerged from its Pokeball. Aerodactyl was a pretty rare Pokemon, one of the rarest actually, mainly due to the fact that they were nearly extinct in the wild, and finding an Old Amber took a ton of luck. Aerodactyl wasn't exactly the most powerful, or durable Pokemon out there, but it was certainly one of the fastest, and due to its half Rock-type it was a good choice to use right now. The question I had to ask though, is what should I do? I didn't want to use a move that would cause a lot of damage to the area, or cause the ground under me to collapse, but at the same time I wanted to damage Growlithe, without damaging it too much.

"Alright Aerodactyl, start off with a Hone Claws, then follow up by using Wing Attack," I commanded Aerodactyl. I didn't want to start off too powerful, because that wasn't my style, I just needed to start with something decent, and this worked to me.

First up came Hone Claws, the Pokemon that used this move would sharpen their claws, or the equivalent of claws if they didn't have claws. Doing this would raise the users Attack stat, as well as their Accuracy, by one stage each. This was good a good way to boost attack, and make some harder moves more likely to hit too. It was strange though, you'd think rather than call the move Hone Claws, they'd call it something like Claw Sharpen since the claws do sharpen, but hey what did I know. Whenever this was done Aerodactyl was going to use Wing Attack. It was a pretty basic move that sounded the way it looked. The user would fly over at the opponent, and smack them with their wings. For a while it was the most common Flying-type move with Aerial Ace. Wing Attack wasn't exactly Aerodactyl's best attack, but provided that Hone Claws worked Aerodactyl would have boosted attack, and factoring the STAB it would get from Wing Attack, Aerodactyl could pack a decent first punch.

I didn't know what Growlithe was going to do, but whatever it did do I'd base my next attack off of that. One thing was for sure though, I didn't want to use any Ground-type moves, and unless I had no other choice but to, I didn't want to use any Rock-type moves either. It wasn't that I was afraid of Aerodactyl doing too much damage to Growlithe, I just didn't want this area to get damaged, and especially not while Sara, along with her Pokemon would be at risk.

Eric sent out his final Pokemon, Aerodactyl, to take on Growlithe. He started with a Hone Claws, most likely aiming for a boost in accuracy rather than power; Aero was to follow up with a Wing Attack. The stone pteradon wasted no time carrying out his orders, lunging into the air with a caw and dragging his deadly talons against one another. Bits of old claw sheath fell away, revealing fresh, sharper claw underneath. Doing a sort of midair flip, he also honed the claws on each wing.

Growlithe wasn’t just going to stand around and let Aero dominate the battle, though. It threw back its head as Aero flew around above it, letting out a throaty howl to raise its own fighting spirit. The howl echoed around us, and further up the trail I heard some kind of Pokemon scurrying away, startled by the fierce sound.

Aero, too, was startled by the noise. Flipping right-side up, the ancient Pokemon eyed his howling adversary for a moment before suddenly folding his wings and diving; whether he wanted to stop Growlithe’s Howl or was just prepared to strike, I couldn’t tell. Either way, Growlithe stopped its attack soon after Aero decided to use his next one, and what happened next surprised me.

Growlithe was still looking up when its Howl ended and instantly spotted Aero plummeting towards it; barking loudly, the little dog crouched down for a moment as the air around it started to waver and dance. Then, quite abruptly, flames erupted from the small Pokemon’s body and engulfed it in a blazing, white-hot inferno. By this time Aero had dropped low enough to snap his wings open in preparation to strike, but Growlithe’s sudden Flare Blitz shocked the dual-typed Pokemon and caused him to veer slightly off-course.

The result was Growlithe leaping toward Aero, its momentum carrying it towards Aero’s outstretched left wing. Flaming body and rock-hard wing collided with enough force to send a loud crack reverberating through the air, and both Pokemon were thrown from each other by the blow. Growlithe hit the ground and rolled, while Aero was knocked to the ground and sent tumbling; he barely managed to regain his wits and dig his claws into the ground to stop himself before disappearing over the edge of the path. Ash and small loose bits of stone were pushed over the edge, falling dozens of feet to the ground below.

“Close,” I breathed as a shaken Growlithe got to its paws, shaking its head and clearly dazed. Aero seemed to be better off, though he, too, appeared somewhat stunned by what had just happened. He raised his wings and hissed in defiance at his opponent, a little unsteady but recovering faster than Growlithe was.

“That took quite a bit out of Growlithe for it being the first turn of the battle,” I commented. “Hopefully we won’t have any further near misses like that one, since our little furry friend will most likely be lacking the power for such another powerful attack. All the same I’d be careful; the Pokemon here are proving to be a lot more resourceful and creative than normal.”

IC: I didn't know if this Growlithe was courageous, or just plan crazy. Like Aerodactyl it lead off with a move that boosted its power, Howl. Growlithe let a loud howl, louder than the caw that Aerodactyl let out, and with that Growlithe's attack stat was boosted. Though what it did next was what really made me question this Growlithe. It covered its own body with a bright flame, and charged directly at Aerodactyl. Aerodactyl was trying to do its Wing Attack, but Growlithe saw fit to interfere with that, and collided head on with Aerodactyl's left wing. It used Flare Blitz, a powerful Fire-type move, but one that came with the consequence of recoil. Growlithe was sent to the ground and rolled, while Aerodactyl was tumbling across the ground, it almost fell over the edge of the cliff, but managed to grab at the ground at the last second, and return to a battle stance.

“That took quite a bit out of Growlithe for it being the first turn of the battle. Hopefully we won’t have any further near misses like that one, since our little furry friend will most likely be lacking the power for such another powerful attack. All the same I’d be careful; the Pokemon here are proving to be a lot more resourceful and creative than normal,” Sara said to me.

"Well, I'm not even sure what to say about that one. Maybe it was creative, or maybe it was crazy, I mean yes it was a powerful attack, but it cost Growlithe some of its energy, and Fire-type moves aren't exactly the best against Rock-types. Still, I have to admire its fighting spirit. You are right though, Aerodactyl, as well as myself, will need to be careful with this one," I replied to Sara. Flare Blitz was certainly unexpected, so there really was no telling what was going to come next. All I knew was that I needed Aerodactyl to be ready. I wasn't exactly sure what I should have Aerodactyl do right now though, I mean, I wanted Aerodactyl to use something that would damage Growlithe, but at the same time I didn't want something so powerful that it'd knock the poor puppy Pokemon out. After seeing the way Aerodactyl managed to keep itself from falling over the edge an idea came to me.

"Okay Aerodactyl, use a Dragon Claw on the ground to break it a little to make some rocks, though try to hold back a bit, I don't want you to destroy the ground under us, I just want a little of it dug up. Afterward take what gets dug up, and use it for an AncientPower attack," I told Aerodactyl, who seemed to understand. This was fairly simple, I wanted to weaken Growlithe, but I knew by using a Physical Attack, especially a Rock one, way too much damage might be done when considering Aerodactyl's boosted Attack, but Aerodactyl wasn't much of a Special Attacker, so using a Special Attack such as AncientPower seemed like the best idea.

This didn't seem too complicated to me. First Aerodactyl's claws would turn either a shade of blue, or possibly purple, and it would claw the ground infront of it, rather than Growlithe. The Dragon Claw would, hopefully, break up some of the ground under Aerodactyl, though hopefully not too much, because we still needed this path to walk on, and those pieces of ground that would come up would be used in place of rocks for Aerodactyl's actual attack. This attack was usually associated with ancient Pokemon, namely fossil Pokemon, or Legendaries. A Pokemon who used it must have had some sort of psychic power, because an aura would surround the rocks as they rose up. Aerodactyl would make the ground that he broke up rise, and hurl it over at Growlithe. Though I wasn't exactly after this, AncientPower had a secondary effect. It had a slight chance to raise the users; Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed all by one stage. I wasn't after this though, I just wanted Aerodactyl to weaken Growlithe.

I debated whether or not I should throw a ball at Growlithe yet. In theory it seemed like a good idea, but then again there was always the chance that Growlithe dodged Aerodactyl's attack, or that Growlithe wasn't weak enough after the move, and then the ball might roll over the edge. I didn't feel like taking any unnecessary risks, and decided it would be better to just let things play out here first.

Aero was one of those Pokemon who, in order to use certain moves, had to makes use of others first. In this case, to use his Ancientpower move to its fullest extent, Aero would need to tear free several decent-sized stones from the ground first and use those as ammo against Growlithe. Eric ordered him to use a Dragon Claw to break free the needed rocks, and Aero wasted no time in carrying out his commands.

As Growlithe recovered from the double whammy he’d just received, Aero used the physical strength its kind are known to possess to rip away pieces of the path; luckily, the stone pteradon was smart enough to pull away the small boulders that had been worked from the ground from when he’d almost toppled over the edge of the path. Once those were loose, he prepared to start heaving them at his winded opponent.

Growlithe wasn’t ready to just give in, though. Despite his obvious fatigue, the Puppy Pokemon visibly steeled himself before rushing towards Aero with a loud yip, inhaling deeply before blowing out a streamer or orange-red flames. The Flamethrower was impressive in size and came just as Aero used his Ancientpower attack, hurling the freed chunks of rock at the smaller mammal. The powerful stream of fire managed to knock several smaller rocks off course, but most of the attack hit home. A few of them pelted Growlithe’s chest and legs, a few caught his head, and some bounced off his sides and back.

Aero didn’t escape unscathed, however. The rocks caused the Flamethrower to split around them, creating a number of smaller fire tunnels. One of these hit Aero right in the snout, while a second caught him in his belly. Even though he was partially immune to Fire attacks, even a Rock Pokemon never appreciated getting flamed in the face. Giving a loud, angry cry, Aero flapped about for a moment and shook his head vigorously to clear the smoldering embers from his eyes. At the same time, Growlithe was crouching close to the ground, tongue lolling as he panted heavily in an effort to catch his breath. It was obvious the battle was wearing harder on him than on Aero.

OOC: Yes, and I said in two VMs, and as well as various IMs over the course of the run that it was alright. So don't worry about it. Also if the capture works I'll just leave after this, I don't feel like sticking around to see if something else I might want shows up.

IC: Ancientpower hit Growlithe dead on, and seemed to do some serious damage. This wasn't the end of Growlithe though, it mounted one more offensive strike. Even though Growlithe had been pelted by a Rock-type move, it still got up to attack. Well that's what you'd think happened anyway, but Growlithe wasn't the kind of Pokemon to just get abused, it proved that when it charged at Aerodactyl as it used Wing Attack. While Aerodactyl was using Ancientpower, Growlithe took in a deep breath, and fired out a surge of fire from its mouth. This was Flamethrower, the standard Fire-type move seen. It was a powerful move, learned by many Fire-types, as well as many non Fire-types too, such as Aerodactyl.

Growlithe released the flames at Aerodactyl, at the same time that Aerodactyl was using Ancientpower, causing the rocks and flames to collide. Some of the rocks slipped past Growlithe's flames, and hit Growlithe head on, whilst some of the flames managed to hit Aerodactyl in its nose, as well as its stomach. Aerodactyl let out a cry, though it was still alright, it didn't seemed burned. Growlithe on the other hand was done, and at this point it seemed like it was nearly down for the count, but still I didn't want to take any unnecessary risks, I wanted Growlithe captured, and nothing more. If I knew Growlithe would stay down I'd throw a ball now, but I couldn't guarantee anything, and the last thing I wanted was for Growlithe to struggle in the ball, or break free from the ball, and fall over the edge in either scenario. No, I needed to do one last thing.

"Use Toxic Aerodactyl!" I commanded. It was fairly simple, once Aerodactyl regained its composure I wanted it to use Toxic. If it hit it would have meant Growlithe would be inflicted with badly poison status, this would have made Growlithe easier to capture. On the other side of things if it hit Growlithe, and Growlithe managed to escape then Toxic would weaken Growlithe's health a little more, without Aerodactyl needing to attack again. And on the final look of things, if Growlithe dodged this, it would probably exhaust almost the rest of its strength doing so. Any way that I looked at it it seemed like a good idea.

Aerodactyl started by taking in a deep breath. Toxic was a move that was purple in color, and took on the appearance of goo. When it hits the opposing Pokemon they turn purple in color, and each time they take damage from Toxic, purple bubbles rise up from under their body. What Toxic did was badly poison the opposing Pokemon, and what this did was cause them to lose one-sixteenth of their maximum health at the end of each turn of battle, and then this increased by another one-sixteenth each time the Pokemon was damaged by Toxic. I wasted no time at all, from my backpack I pulled out an unused Park Ball, and I waited, I waited to see what would happen with Toxic once Aerodactyl used it, and once I saw something happen I would throw the Park Ball at Growlithe. All that was really left to do now was hope for the best.

Aero recovered before Growlithe did, which wasn’t surprising considering the fact that he hadn’t spent nearly as much energy in this battle as Growlithe had. From the get-go the Puppy Pokemon had shown an amazing level of…I didn’t want to say aggression, but it was definitely not bravery. It was more like Growlithe had seen a challenge and recklessly decided to tackle it. In fact, that was the perfect word to describe Growlite: reckless. It probably got him into a lot of trouble before now, but if he kept this personality when he evolved, he’d become a dangerous opponent. Luckily, Arcanine were as loyal as when they were unevolved, so at least Eric wouldn’t have to worry about him being difficult to control.

Aero’s final command was an order to use Toxic. Once he recovered enough to do so, the stone pteradon inhaled a deep breath, then rose his back, arched his neck, and gaped his massive jaws wide open. He made a wet sort of hacking noise that made me wince slightly; even though I knew it was normal for non-Poison Pokemon to have a bit of difficulty using Toxic (and that using such a move caused them no harm), it was still a little hard to witness how some of them did it. It seemed in this cause that Aero was going to use bile as a main component in his attack, and I couldn’t help but make a face as I thought about it. After all, no one likes to think about watching someone get puked on.

After retching a few times, Aero finally coughed up a thick wad of bile that had a purple tinge to it. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Growlithe as Aero tossed his head and spat the Toxic at him; it smacked the poor pup right in the snout. Momentarily drained from Aero’s Ancientpower and the strain of his powerful Flamethrower, it took the smaller Pokemon a moment to react to what just happened. When he finally noticed it, he started yelping and wiping at his face, trying to get the poisonous bile off himself.

After a few seconds the goo had thoroughly matted the fur on Growlithe’s face and front paws, and it was obvious the little Pokemon was already feeling the effects of it. As weak as he already was, it wasn’t surprising that the Toxic was hitting him hard right from the start. Staggering a bit, Growlithe aimlessly tottered around for a moment before sitting down heavily, looking completely lost. It was obvious he wasn’t in any shape to keep battling, and as I was getting ready to say something, I saw a Park Ball sail through the air. Apparently Eric could see it too, that Growlithe was pretty much done. The Ball bounced off Growlithe’s back before popping open and sucking him inside; it then snapped shut and fell to the ground, giving one feeble, barely visible wiggle before falling still.

“Well, there’s that one,” I commented after a moment, going to scoop up the Ball and place it with those of the Pokemon Eric had already got. “And that also makes three. So you get to choose: call it quits and leave with what you’ve already caught, or keep going and see if you find anything else you might want more than one of these guys.”

OOC: I'm not even saying it's fine anymore, cause it is, I made my point.

IC: Toxic hit Growlithe dead on, and it had sealed its fate. Growlithe tried it's hardest to get the Toxic off of it, but it was much too tired, and now it was perfectly capable to be captured. I threw the ball, and it made its mark square on Growlithe, who was sucked into the ball, and captured without much of a resistance. The puppy Pokemon was now apart of my team, just like Darumaka and Larvesta.

“Well, there’s that one, and that also makes three. So you get to choose: call it quits and leave with what you’ve already caught, or keep going and see if you find anything else you might want more than one of these guys,” Sara said to me, as she went and picked up Growlithe's ball. I was actually tempted to stick around, and keep going to see what I could find, but I couldn't, I was itching to go to Meteor Valley, plus I needed to go attempt to capture some Pokemon to give to others, I mean Christmas was only two months away, and I wanted to be ready.

"Thanks Sara, but I'll need to pass, and leave here. Thanks for taking me through here though, I was able to catch some pretty nice stuff thanks to you, and for that I'm grateful, but now I need to set my sights on my next run. I wish you good luck with future jobs you may take though. I'm ready to go whenever, and I'll take the three Pokemon I caught, Darumaka, Larvesta, and Growlithe, as well as that $5,000 in picture money," I said as I returned Aerodactyl to its Pokeball, and threw my backpack back over my shoulder.
