Ed didn't look interested, and I didn't blame him. Even though Ducklett were pretty rare in the Park, they were quite common on the mainland, so if Ed wanted to own one he'd be smarter to catch one out there where the three-Pokemon-per-Expedition limit didn't exist.

"The usual," he said, and I pulled out a PokeDoll. However, the Flying-type quacked at us once and then took to the air, circling once before disappearing into the sky. I shrugged and replaced the doll - Ed wouldn't need to buy a doll this time.

The Staryu disk echoed amongst the rocks once again, beckoning the Water-type to appear. The shuddering whah-whah noise was very distinctive and couldn't be mistaken for anything else. I wondered why Ed was having such bad luck with the Staryu. Maybe they were all off on a picnic or something. I jumped up onto a rock that was sticking out of the stream to get a better look around the comparatively-gentle rapids. I saw a Pokemon, but it wasn't a Staryu. A small black-and-blue fish was trying to swim against the incoming water. Seeing as the Finneon wouldn't have any business upstream - they liked large, deep bodies of water - I assumed this was some kind of training. See how far it could get before it tired or something.

Whatever it was doing here, it was fair game. I pointed it out to Ed and called out, "Feel like battling a Finneon, man?"

Chainy pulled a Pokedoll out of his bag, he was preparing to throw it but the Ducklett just circled around a few times before flying off into the sunset. Chainy shrugged and put the doll back.

The Staryu disk continued to play, but I knew it wasn't going to help. My hopes were low, and I felt defeated ever since the battle with Horsea. Chainy jumped up onto a rock sticking out of the water. I thought he was looking for Staryu or something, since he was a cool guy like that.

"Feel like battling a Finneon, man?" Pointing to the water and calling back to me.

I just sighed, my gut was right, no Staryu this time. "Let's just try to sneak past it, and if we can't then throw a doll at it."

I turned my disk back on for the last time. I was really glad at this point that I had decided to catch that Frillish, but my hopes were still high for either this final use working, or encountering a member of the Slowbro evolutionary line sometime in my next few encounters.

"Let's just try to sneak past it, and if we can't then throw a doll at it," Ed called back.

"Dude, it's a fish!" I yelled, grinning. "A freaking fish! As if you need a doll to escape from something like this. Come on, let's get out of here. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't look like there are any Staryu around today. Let's go see if we can find something more interesting."

As if to emphasize my point, Ed's Staryu disk emitted one last wavering call before going silent. A small trail of gray smoke writhed its way up into the air from the disc slot of the Pokeplayer. The Voice Disks were incredibly good at luring wild Pokemon because they incorporated the DNA of the recorded Pokemon, which increased the realism of the calls in a way that had once been explained to me but I never could understand. Unfortunately, the drawback was that they tended to overheat, and thus the automatic shut-off that kept a disk from being played past the point of no return and into degradation.

"Well, if you got any other disks, now is the time," I said as I hopped down from the rock. As I did so, I saw a sudden flash of white against the blue sky.The long serpentine form of a Dragonair streaked down from the mountain and began drawing lines in the sky with its body. If my guess was correct, this Dragonair was newly evolved and relishing in its new-found ability to fly. Dratini could sometimes manage temporary bursts of levitation, but it wasn't until their evolution that they could fully cast off the shackles of gravity.

"I don't suppose you want to battle that?" I asked my Trainer, pointing up into the sky.

"Dude, it's a fish!" Chainy blurted with a grin on his face. "A freaking fish! As if you need a doll to escape from something like this. Come on, let's get out of here. I laughed out loud at Chainy's outburst. It was funny to see such a calm guy act like that. Chainy's humor was almost enough to overcome my depression about not finding a Staryu. Even as we were walking and the Staryu cry was still emitting from the disk, I knew it was no use. Sure enough, the cries died out and the disk burned out.

"Well, if you got any other disks, now is the time," Chainy said.

I pulled out the Tynamo Disk and inserted it in the Voice Player. Hopefully I'd be able to catch this little guy for my gym.

"I don't suppose you want to battle that?" Chainy asked, pointing up to the sky and distracting me from my disk.

I squinted my eyes to try and see what it was.

"Is that a Dragonair? I never know those things could fly... but, no thanks, let's try to sneak away from it. If it follows then throw a doll, please."

Ed narrowed his eyes against the sun as he followed my finger up into the sky. "Is that a Dragonair?" he asked incredulously. "I never know those things could fly. But, no thanks - let's try to sneak away from it. If it follows then throw a doll, please."

"Yeah, they're pretty rare so it's not a commonly known fact." I addressed his question. "Doesn't look like we'll need to run either."

The Dragonair twisted around in the air a few more times before straightening up and flying away over the huge lake, which suited us both just fine. I turned around and took one last look at the mountain - there was only one present in the lakes, and it was surrounded by a fair patch of ice. This was where all the Ice-types that lived in the Lakes were found. There were also usually some rare and powerful Pokemon up there too.

I was about to ask Ed if he wanted to go up there when I heard the cry of a Tynamo. My head swung around wildly as I tried to see where it was coming from, and it took me a good half a minute to realise that the noises were coming from Ed's Pokeplayer. I blushed slightly as I realised I probably looked like a fool, but I covered it by walking briskly away from the mountain. I knew that we wouldn't find any Tynamo there - they liked to hang out in shallow, slow streams and other damp places where it was dark.

A surprise was in store for me as we walked down the side of the lake. A splashing noise heralded the arrival of a Pokemon, but when I looked to see what it was I blinked in disbelief. It was a Cloyster, swimming briskly across the surface of the water.

"And here I thought we were leaving the Ice-types behind," I muttered to myself. "Do you want to try and catch that?" I asked Ed.

"Yeah, they're pretty rare so it's not a commonly known fact." Chainy responded. "Doesn't look like we'll need to run either."

"Sweet." I said quietly, as Dragonair twisted around in the air a few times and flew off over the large lake.

Chainy and I strolled along, both of us looking at the beautiful snow-capped mountain, and some of the water around the base of the mountain was frozen, so I assumed this was a hot spot for Ice-types. As I turned my Tynamo Disk on, Chainy's head began to whip around, like he was frantically searching for something. I didn't say anything, for fear of him currently being possessed by a demon, but he cut the weird stuff out when he spotted my Pokeplayer in my hand. I saw him blush and try to brush it off like he knew what it was the whole time. I didn't say anything, I figured he was embarrassed enough.

We were walking along the coast when a purple shell came swimming swiftly up to the shore.

"Do you want to try and catch that?" Chainy asked me after muttering something under his breath.

"Nah, the usual." I said, preparing to grab $500 out of my pocket in case the Water-type followed us.

"Nah, the usual," Ed replied. I wasn't surprised at this either - Shellder were common house-pets, so if he wanted to raise a Cloyster he could just buy one and train it up to be a battler. Thankfully, the Cloyster seemed as interested in him as he did in it; the Ice-type swam in brisk circles but never really came near us. I shrugged and we moved on, heading in the general direction of the entrance. The run would be over soon, and we might as well be within walking distance of the gate when it ended.

A couple of minutes later, I heard a strange call. It was echoing, and kind of reminded me of a Horsea call, but more bubbly. I peered around with my hand shading my eyes, but I couldn't see anything. Finally, I noticed something bobbing on the waves of the lake. It was clearly getting bigger, which meant it was heading this way.

"Hey, Ed, check it out," I said to my Trainer, pointing at the incoming Pokemon with my other hand. I stared after it for a few more seconds before realising what it was. It was a Kingdra, and judging by its calls and the speed it was moving the Dragon-type was not happy.

"Ed, if you don't want to fight this thing I advise we get moving right away," I said urgently to him. "I've seen these things turn nasty, and if you don't intend on capturing it it would be better for everyone involved if we were here when it arrives."

Luckily, the Cloyster kept going, and I saved $500.

We continued walking when we both heard a cry that sounded very similar to that of a Horsea. Chainy peered around, searching for the source. I was checking my Voice Player to make sure that it wasn't the source of the cries when Chainy nudged my shoulder.

"Hey, Ed, check it out," he said. I squinted my eyes, trying to focus on a blue blob. After a moment, I realized it was a Kingdra, Horsea's fully evolved form. It was moving fast and making loud noises, which couldn't of been a good sign.

"Ed, if you don't want to fight this thing I advise we get moving right away," Chainy said, urgently. "I've seen these things turn nasty, and if you don't intend on capturing it it would be better for everyone involved if we were here when it arrives."

Chainy looked over at me when he finished speaking, but I was already a good 15 yards in front of him, hauling ass away from the angry Dragon-type.

"If it follows us, throw a doll!" I called back to the Ranger, not breaking stride.

Ed didn't reply straight away, so I turned to look at him. Turns out he was already a fair distance away, full-on running from the Kingdra. "If it follows us, throw a doll!" he screamed over his shoulder without stopping. I laughed and chased after him, enjoying the simple repetitive motions involved in jogging.

We took a break about five minutes later, on a small beach peppered with large rocks. I used my Aura Reader to zoom in on where the Kingdra had been, and it was nowhere to be seen. I sighed in relief.

"Looks like we got away clean," I said to Ed.

"Not too clean," he muttered, and I turned around to see him covered in more bird crap. A Ducklett was circling above him, cackling with glee. I sighed started trying to shoo the bird away. "Man, you don't have much good luck," I remarked ruefully. "I assume you don't want to battle this?"

OOC: No problem, take your time bro. Escape/doll please btw.
    ____

We had been sitting on a rock for a good five minutes, catching our breath, when Chainy used his fancy eye piece to scan the area where we had fled from.

"Looks like we got away clean," Chainy said.

I nodded in approval, but then, things took a turn for the worse. As I was nodding my head excessively like a bobble head, a chunky, white, blob of liquid fell on my head.

My movement stopped and I began to scream out gibberish curse words, so non-coherent that I didn't even know what I was saying.

Chainy turned around to see what was unfolding. "Man, you don't have much good luck," Chainy remarked. I gave him a disapproving look. "I assume you don't want to battle this?"

I stood up and stomped away, pouting and wiping the bird poop off my face.

"You know the drill." I muttered, keeping my Tynamo Disk running.

Ed pouted and started stomping unhappily away. "You know the drill," he replied. He certainly didn't sound too happy. I grinned and followed him. Thankfully, the Ducklett didn't seem inclined to follow us. It circled a few times before landing on the water. The Flying-type then started bobbing its head underwater, clearly hunting for food, but it kind of looked like it was flashing its butt repeatedly at us.

I put the thought behind me and walked alongside Ed. It occurred to me that I was subconsciously recognizing the landmarks, so we weren't far from the gate. This expedition had been fun, but it'd be good to get back home and put my feet up. Until Ivy badgered me to get on with my paperwork, anyway.

I heard some rapid splashing in the lake, and I looked over to see a large red fish diving in and out of the water. It was a Magikarp - one of the weakest Pokemon in existence. However, they evolved into Gyarados, one of the strongest non-Legendaries, so I wasn't sure whether Ed would be interested or not. It'd be a quick, easy battle at the least.

    "Magikarp, man?" I offered.

I had a sense of relief when the Ducklett decided not to pursue me and flew away. Chainy and I continued to walk down the edge of the lake, side by side, when we heard some splashing in the water. We looked over to see a orange fish helplessly flailing about in the water.

    "Magikarp, man?" Chainy asked.

Normally, my first instinct when offered a Pokemon is to blow it off. But, for some reason, I was hesitant to do so with this particular fish. Sure, Magikarp are one of, if not the, weakest Pokemon in existence, but they evolve in to the menacing Gyarados, an extremely powerful Pokemon. I was a big fan of Gyarados, they had great move pools and attacking power, paired with the very useful ability Moxie, which I have been able to use with success on Snowball, my Salamence. It was standard practice for a trainer to own a Gyarados, and I have yet to own one. I felt like this was my chance to finally do so, especially since it would be an easy capture and I only have a couple encounters left as well as one use of my Tynamo Voice Disk.

I debated with myself which Pokemon to use. Buzz was the obvious choice, but he just fought the last two battles, granted they were quite a while ago. Also, this would be a rather easy battle, so fatigue doesn't matter much.

"Actually man, I think I'll catch that. I could use it to surf around on when I come back to the Lakes, plus it will be useful in battle." I responded.

"Buzz, let's go three-for-three." I said as I casually tossed his Pokeball a few yards in front of me.

He came out of his Pokeball and stretched a bit, before facing me and flexing, telling me he was ready for battle.

"We're going to catch a Magikarp today." I said with a wink.

Buzz chuckled for a serious, but then he realized I was serious. He turned around and saw the Magikarp flailing about. With a sigh, he readied himself for battle.

"Okay well, let's just get this done quick so we can bail out of here. I have a sweet trade set up for that Frillish already; we're getting a Snorlax! So use Thunderbolt on that thing out there!" I called out to Buzz.

Buzz nodded and tensed up. As he clenched his fists, electricity began to pulse through his body, concentrating into his tentacles as they shot out towards the lake, and with a battle cry, launched a jagged yellow beam of electrical energy out to the Magikarp, who I don't think even noticed Buzz yet.

"Actually man, I think I'll catch that," Ed replied, surprising me. "I could use it to surf around on when I come back to the Lakes, plus it will be useful in battle. Buzz, let's go three-for-three."

The young man threw the Electivire's PokeBall out towards the water. This would be the Electric-type's third battle today, but then again, Magikarp wouldn't exactly be a challenge. Hell, it would probably be slightly more exerting than reading the morning paper.

"We're going to catch a Magikarp today," Ed announced. Buzz chuckled, and I shared the same derisive opinion. Still, I didn't say so out loud - this Magikarp was weak now, but one day it would evolve into a powerful Gyarados, and sometimes they held grudges. Dual could fight Gyarados off easily, but I might have some trouble by myself.

"Okay well, let's just get this done quick so we can bail out of here. I have a sweet trade set up for that Frillish already; we're getting a Snorlax! So use Thunderbolt on that thing out there!" Ed yelled.

I was impressed. I hadn't even seen him use a phone, but he'd managed to organise a trade. A link with a Psychic-type perhaps, or maybe just incredibly adept at using his technology without letting it be seen.

Buzz stepped forwards and clenched his fist, extending his black rods towards the Magikarp. They shot twin blasts of electricity towards the fish, which combined into one large jagged bolt. The Thunderbolt struck the red fish, blasting it high into the air amid a huge plume of water. It had an impressive hang-time of five seconds before landing back in the lake.

"Ed, be careful about powerful electric attacks," I warned him. "Magikarp usually hang around other unevolved Pokemon, and you don't want to hurt any of them."

The second I stopped talking, the Magikarp rocketed impressively out of the water. It slammed into Electivire's chest with a wet thwack-ing sound, causing the huge beast to take a single backwards step. It then fell limply to the ground, flopping around on the dirt. It was a good try, I suppose.

The electricity traveled through the air and hit the Magikarp dead on. The result was the small fish being thrown into the air on top of a huge plume of water. I shaded my eyes from the sun and watched as the Magikarp hung in the air for a good five seconds before plummeting back to the lake.

"Ed, be careful about powerful electric attacks,"Chainy warned me. "Magikarp usually hang around other unevolved Pokemon, and you don't want to hurt any of them."

I wagged my finger at Chainy. "You're right! I forgot about that from that other battle. Can't harm the other Pokemon. Sorry about that."

I began to ponder my next attack, since it couldn't be electrical, when my chain of thought was broken by Magikarp flying through the air towards Buzz. Buzz was so surprised that he didn't even react, he let Magikarp hit him. With a disgustingly wet slapping sound, Magikarp struck Buzz right in his chest, hardly knocking the large Electric-type back. That attack was much more helpful for Buzz and I, as now Magikarp was out of the water and flopping around on dry land.

For a second, I pitied the fish. But then I thought about the beast it would become with a little bit of training. Gyarados are truly impressive Pokemon.

With a closer view of the water-type I could tell it was pretty badly hurt. I certainly would want to go easy on it for the next move or two.

"Alright Buzz go easy on it, use Thundershock." I said calmly.

The prep for a Thundershock was nothing compared to Thunderbolt. Buzz didn't struggle as much, his tails simply rose in the air and curved towards the Magikarp. A quick jolt of electricity traveled from the battery back to the tip of the prongs and towards the water-type.

""You're right! I forgot about that from that other battle. Can't harm the other Pokemon. Sorry about that," Ed apologised. He said it in an upbeat tone, though, and while I was glad to see that meant he was absorbed by the battle, I hoped he wasn't going to just go ahead and forget again. If he did, I might have to make an official warning.

Thankfully, he seemed to be on the ball. "Alright Buzz, go easy on it. Use Thundershock," he said, brimming with quiet confidence.

The Electivire's black tail-prongs moved up again, but this time there was no charge-time required. A quick yellow blast of electricity arced forwards and shocked the red fish. It stopped moving for a few seconds, but then leaped up with a mighty convulsion. It slapped Buzz's jaw, knocking the hulking yellow leviathan back a step. Impressive for a wounded fish.

Still, just because the Magikarp was weak didn't mean it was stupid. It started flopping towards the water, and I knew what was going to happen. The one strength it had was speed, and if it reached the water it would be able to escape. As a Ranger, I wasn't able to assist my Trainers in battle, but hopefully Ed would come to the same conclusion that I had and act accordingly.

Buzz carried out the Thundershock with perfection. The quick strike fried the Magikarp to near defeat. The Magikarp, however, wasn't stupid. It immediately took advantage of it's lack of energy and launched itself right at Buzz, whacking him with a thud. The Flail attack was especially strong since Magikarp was seriously hurt.

After the attack, the Magikarp continued to impress. It began to desperately head for the water, where it at least had some sort of chance to do something. Realizing I had to do something before this battle got way more difficult then it should be, I pulled a standard Park Ball from my pocket, took a few seconds to aim at the moving target, and launched the ball overhand to what I hoped would be the perfect spot.

Ed didn't miss a beat. As the Magikarp flopped towards the river, he withdrew a Park Ball and threw it at the red fish. The spherical capture device struck the Magikarp's back fin, and it was converted into red light and absorbed. The ball shook twice and then laid still. I nodded in satisfaction, not surprised in any way. Ed was a pro Trainer. I was glad he'd be leaving with three Pokemon, even if one of them was arguably border-line worthless.

As if my thoughts had summoned it from a fabric of the universe, another Pokemon swum curiously up. It too was a fish, except instead of being all-red like the Magikarp it was blue on top, with yellow, spiky fins. It grinned at me roguishly as I picked up Ed's PokeBall, and I raised my right eyebrow in surprise.

"Hey Ed, feel like catching a Carvanha?" I asked him. "They're pretty rare, even in the Park, and they get that Speed Boost ability that's all the rage these days. Otherwise, I can just escort you out if you're happy with the three Pokemon you have."

The ball wobbled once, twice, ding. Magikarp had been, with rather ease, captured. No matter what, I'd be leaving the Lakes with full pockets, and that is always a good feeling.

As Chainy walked up to the Pokeball to pick it up, I noticed another Pokemon swimming curiously up to the shore. A blue fin poked from the water, and my heart sunk as I thought about what it could be. Was it the super elusive and super rare Feebas? My anticipation rose greatly as the Pokemon got closer and began to emerge from the water.

My excitement dive bombed, however, when I didn't see that yellow gold color that Feebas are known for. It turned out to be a Carvanha.

"Hey Ed, feel like catching a Carvanha?" Chainy asked me. "They're pretty rare, even in the Park, and they get that Speed Boost ability that's all the rage these days. Otherwise, I can just escort you out if you're happy with the three Pokemon you have."

Chainy was clearly pushing for me to capture this thing, and I could see why. I strongly considered it, but after a bit of thinking, I made up my mind.

"Yeah you're right about Speed Boost, but it's so damn fragile, and it's lack of stat-boosting moves is a serious turn off. I'm happy with what I caught. It's been real Chainy, and as always it was a pleasure having you as my ranger, but I gotta head out. I gotta make my way to the Garden ASAP, I got my eyes on a few Pokemon I wanna add to my team. Hopefully you'll be able to ranger that."

I was a little bit surprised by Ed's choosing a Magikarp over a Carvanha, but that must mean he was happy with his captures, which meant I was happy too.

"Two runs in one day, hey?" I asked as we walked on, leaving the Carvanha behind. "You're aiming high. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to take you - I need a vacation, and REAL soon. I'm sure you'll do fine without me, though."

Ten minutes later we were at the gate. I passed Ed's new Pokemon to him and told him to take care. Hopefully I'd be able to take a break without getting dumped on, but I knew with all my responsibilities and my reputation there wasn't much hope.
