    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Buzz picked up his oar to keep on going, and Ivy followed suit. The Buizel chittered happily and smacked its tail against the side of the boat in farewell before diving back under the water. The water was semi-clear, and she watched the orange weasel swim away until it disappeared from view.

They continued across the lake, and Ivy noticed the clouds were starting to roll in slowly. They looked a little dark, possibly heavy with rain. She wasn't really looking forward to that. It wasn't the being wet part, since she was already sopping from falling in the lake twice, but it just made everything else trickier to do. If it stormed, they'd have to watch for lightning.

They paddled on, and eventually the other dock came into sight. They were about half a football field out when their boat struck something with a heavy thunk. Both of them lurched forward a bit before jerking back into their seats. She heard an exhale of breath and leaned over the side to see what they hit.

A large blue stone was in the way, only she could faintly see a cream under belly and a row of shiny white teeth. She could barely make out two beady eyes above them. It rocked from side to side a bit, and the water around it knocked their boat around.

“Hey, stop that,” she said to it, and the Pokémon simply blew more air out its top. “Could be a relation to that Wailord we saw. Want this Wailmer?”

The pair rowed on, and soon the other dock was in sight. They were drawing into the shallow water, when once again they hit something beneath the water. Buzz toppled forward, almost falling out of his seat. Ivy leant over the side of the boat to see what they had hit.

There was a similar dark blue shadow below the level of the water. Buzz first thought it was another Wailord, but the shadow; although still large, was much smaller than the previous one. Buzz assumed it was a Wailmer, the pre-evolved form of Wailord. Buzz pulled out his Pokédex. "Wailmer, the Ball Whale Pokémon. On sunny days, it lands on beaches to bounce like a ball and play. It spouts water from its nose." Buzz thought this was rather misleading; it was reasonably sunny today but Wailmer wasn't anywhere near a beach, instead it was irritating us and slowing us down.

“Hey, stop that,” she said to it, and the Pokémon simply blew more air out its top. “Could be a relation to that Wailord we saw. Want this Wailmer?” Buzz contemplated capturing for a moment, given that he had only captured a Tynamo on this run. He then decided it probably wouldn't be wise to try and capture it, for the same reasons it wasn't wise to catch a Wailord.

"Nah, sorry. I know this must be pretty boring as a ranger, but I just have anywhere to put such a huge thing," Buzz said to Ivy. He looked around hoping to spot something that could be an indicator for the location of a Stunfisk. The only problem being, he had no idea what a Stunfisk is, no idea what a Stunfisk ate or did. He prepared a Pokedoll in case the Wailmer didn't want to leave.

(OOC: A new policy is that Legendary encounters still count toward the next mon's MCR since they can't be captured. At least that's what I understood we were going to do now.)

Buzz decided against catching the Wailmer for about the same reason as the Wailord; if he couldn't keep it anywhere, it was better off where it was. Considering he was running an Electric-type gym, water Pokémon probably weren't very high on his agenda anyway.

Thankfully, the Wailmer had enough of them, and before they could do anything, it simply sunk into the dark depths of the lake without a fuss. She was glad; it always slowed a run down when the wild Pokémon wouldn't take no for an answer. Some of them were offended at a Trainer not trying to capture them and others just wanted to have a good time, not realizing that the Trainer wasn't interested enough to give that.

They rowed on, and Ivy watched as the dark clouds rolled in closer. They seemed to be moving faster now, and before she knew it, a chilly rain started up over the lake, coming down in a sheet right away, drenching them again. She was really thankful all their gear was so protected from the elements.

The rain struck with a repetitive slap against the lake surface, and then a shadow caused Ivy to look up. A large blue form descended from the clouds, diving down to hover above the water. She immediately recognized the white patches and the symbolic red designs on its fins and body.

“Kyogre,” she said, her voice in a bit of a shushed awe. She had heard about the Legendary Water-type, but she hadn't seen it before now. Rumor had it that Dual, Chainy's Gallade, always got into a test of strength with it. Beside her, even Haji's interest was piqued as he regarded the Legend.

The large whale-like beast was well over two lengths of her, probably even two of Buzz or Chainy or Leo. It was said that a heavy rain always followed it and that once it almost engulfed the world in a flood. “What do you think, Buzz?”

OOC: OK, bmg fucked me over twice on this post ... also Kyogre in the sky? lolwut... @WinterVines

The Wailmer seemed content to swim away from the small rowing boat. Buzz was relieved as many Pokémon seemed to take not wanting to battle them as a great offense. He had read reports from the earliest introduction of trainers into the park, before the Rangers carried Pokédolls. Trainers were unhappy that they had to battle every Pokémon they met because their team would faint before the end from exhaustion. Then with the discovery of how easily Pokédolls led to escapes things began to improve.

Buzz glanced down at his PokePlayer which had just finished its latest Stunfisk cry, with no sign of success. The track listing showed that he only had one more chance to catch the seemingly elusive Pokémon.

A cursory glance at the sky filled him with a sudden sense of foreboding; thick black clouds had begun to roll across the blue sky. Gentle drops of rain splattered his face; the start of a downpour. The clouds broke releasing a torrential storm upon them and the calm lake was tumult with the onslaught of rain. The small rowing boat swayed in the unsteady waters.

A looming shadow covered the lake. Still staring into the sky, a large blue whale-like creature was descending into the lake. Signature red lines traced out its back marking it as the Legendary Pokémon, Kyogre. Buzz’s jaw dropped in awe at the behemoth. He had heard the tales in Hoenn; the famous battle between Kyogre and Groudon that shook the Earth to its very core. It only ended when Rayquaza returned from the atmosphere to put the two Pokémon in their place.

Chainy liked to spread it around that Dual and Kyogre often battled to test their strength, Buzz was suspicious. Not so much of Dual’s ability, more the fact that he doubted Kyogre, or any Legendary Pokémon, would show themselves to that big girl Chainy. Either way it was an impressive sight and he immediately pulled out the Pokedex and scanned the Pokémon.

“Kyogre: the Sea Basin Pokémon. A mythical Pokémon said to have swelled the seas with rain and tidal waves. It is thought to have been asleep at the deepest part of the sea for many centuries, after engaging in a cataclysmic battle with its rival, Groudon.”

“Kyogre,” Ivy said, her voice in a bit of a shushed awe, ““what do you think, Buzz?” Buzz nodded happily and then grabbed his camera before it got away. He quickly clicked the shutter release ensuring the photo was really clear before smiling at Ivy to move on. He wondered just how deep the lakes were if they could house Kyogre; he assumed that they lead to the ocean through a sea trench, but he wasn’t sure. He wondered where Kyogre was going and what it did during its day; it was park policy to prevent trainers from catching any legendary Pokémon encountered. Buzz would have loved to be able to though. He could just imagine the look on Leo’s face if he called out a Kyogre at the next Ranger battle tournament.

“I think I wish I could try and capture the beast, alas park policy…” Buzz said with a grin etched across his face. “Ignoring the probability it would rape my team, but you know, a guy can dream. Well I guess I should give this voice disk one last try.” Buzz clicked the play button once more on his PokéPlayer, unleashing that awful noise into the air. They were drawing up to the docks now so maybe they would have better luck at the shore line.

“Maybe these things are just too dumb to know their own cry, I mean if James has one they can’t be that great. Although I am curious as to why it lives at the Lakes, I mean most electric types live at the plant. Tynamo and its relatives are eels so that makes sense. Stunfisk is part Ground as well so it’s an odd choice of habitat, but according to our surveys all signs indicate it living here. Maybe we should cause a mass migration; I hear that the Escavaliers was recently spotted moving into the woods.”

    ---

The great water beast hovered over the water like some overgrown pontoon. It was really a sight to see. Ivy was glad to came out to the Lakes today, despite all the water they had ingested in the process. At least the rolling clouds hadn't been a storm. There was nothing wrong with a little rain.

Buzz seemed pretty amazed at the Legend too. He wasted no time recording the information into his Pokédex. Then he snapped a picture. She was sure someone at the Main Outpost would pay dearly for a shot of the rare Pokémon. It'd even give Buzz and Chainy something to talk about, seeing how Chainy encountered it so often. Knowing those two though, they'd just get into another argument about something stupid.

They continued to row toward the dock as the Kyogre started settling into the Lake. How deep was this thing anyway? First a Wailord and now a Kyogre... in the same space.

They reached the dock as the rain stopped, and the Legendary Pokémon finally settled into the water and disappeared into the dark depths. Buzz's disk played one more time while they sat in the boat, but nothing came to its call. Maybe Buzz was right; it could just be too dumb to know what it's own call was like.

She turned to jump out of the boat when she spotted another Pokémon resting on the shore. Speaking of dumb Pokémon. “Hey, Buzz, look there.” She pointed to a pink form sitting in the sand.

Slowpoke weren't really that dumb, she knew, but their dopey look sort of made it seem that way. In reality they were just really slow. They looked a little like a pink sloth. They spent most of their time on their stomachs, and usually their long tails were dipped into the water. This one was doing that. If they got bit by a Shellder on the appendage, they'd evolve into a Slowbro. It looked their way with a blank expression, though she thought its cream-capped face was morphed into a bit of a smile.

    “Want to catch that one?”

    OOC: Female Slowpoke.

Kyogre continued on deeper in to the water, soon even the great shadow beneath the water vanished as it plunged to the depths. Buzz smiled as it vanished, he quickly checked the camera to make sure the photograph was detailled and not blurred. He was satisfied with the photo and was sure he could get some money for it. Buzz looked back to the shore, but alas there was no sight of anything that might have been Stunfisk. He was a little upset, but it was not the end of the world. Buzz doubted that he would even have the room upon his gym team to hold Stunfisk. The league only allowed gym leaders to have a roster of twelve Pokémon, something about keeping it fair for trainers.

Ivy looked to jump out of the boat onto the dock, before pointing to a small creature lying upon the shore line. “Hey, Buzz, look there.” Buzz glanced over and registered the Slowpoke. Slowpoke were often given a bad reputation for being stupid when in actually their telepathic powers were pronound; just, as their name indicates, they are very slow and cautious creatures.

They evolved into with Slowking or Slowbro depending upon whether they had access to a King's Rock or whether a Shellder bit their tail. The symbiotic evolution caused when a Shellder bites the tail of a Slowpoke is quite remarkable and had been studied by many Pokémon professors. However there was a dark side to Human's interaction with Slowpoke, it was discovered that their tails are quite the delicacy. This naturally caused many problems until the hunting of Slowpoke was outlawed. It looked their way with a blank expression, though she thought its cream-capped face was morphed into a bit of a smile.

“Want to catch that one?” Ivy asked. Buzz contemplated the rather dim looking Pokémon. He saw no reason not to try and catch it, although he had a psychic partner in River, it could always be useful to have another one to help out around the headquarters. That being said with the amount of psychic Pokémon the rangers used the psychic energy in the headquarters would be enough to lift the entire island if they wanted to.

“Sure, I’ll have a go at capturing it.” Buzz wasn’t sure who to use. He immediately thought Thundera, but having already uses him once it would be fair to give his other Pokémon a bit of exercise. Jolteon had a clear type advantage, but he decided it would be a better test to use River. He plucked her Poké Ball from his belt; he tapped the button at the centre of the ball releasing the Xatu from the device.

Okay, River. I want you to start by using Steel Wing, but rather than a metallic energy I want you to fuse the energy from Shadow Ball into your wings. Buzz waited for the sarcastic retort, but none was forthcoming for once. He wasn’t entirely sure why and he wasn’t going to complain about it either.

River took to the sky, her green wings fluttered through the air, a dark ball of energy formed in front of her before it split and began to fuse with her wings. The black energy coated her wings as if they were darkness embodied. Buzz watched as she dived down to attack the pink Pokémon.

Buzz decided to fight, and after a few moments of deliberation, he send out River for the task. He didn't have that usual look on his face when they were communicating telepathically and the Xatu said something snarky, so maybe he wasn't complaining about this. Most Pokémon understood the call of battle, something ingrained into their nature to respond to it.

They stayed motionless for a moment, and through the energy in the air, Ivy figured they were talking telepathically. She and Haji did that often, especially when they battled. If the opponent didn't know what you were planning, that was a great advantage. It didn't matter if Buzz spoke out loud or didn't; she couldn't change the battle. It was just her job to watch and make sure neither Buzz nor the wild Pokémon got injured on the trip.

While they were plotting, Ivy noticed the sky was darkening again. She stepped out of the boat and onto the dock as she looked back across the lake, making sure Kyogre wasn't rising again. The lake was still though, so she turned to the next culprit.

The Slowpoke was twitching her fingers and tail, the limbs swaying back and forth with the smallest of motions. She could barely tell. She supposed that matched her nature. The creature had her eyes on the sky though, and the clouds rolled in quickly, darkening with every moment. A light sprinkle started, and then it picked up pace and fell harder, drumming on the water surface with a stead rhythm.

River flew up, and Ivy saw her wings spread wide, preparing to dive. They glistened, even in the water, shining for seconds with a pale metallic color. Then she saw the shadows creep into the edges between the feathers, some sort of ghastly energy she was combining with her other attack.

Then she dove at the Slowpoke, hitting it square on the back. The pink Pokémon's tail twitched, and then rings shot out of the water from her right side, flying toward them. With a shove, Slowpoke knocked the Xatu back and let her get hit by the rings, jetting her over to the other side of the dock.

Ivy knew birds didn't fly well when their feathers were wet, but also knew that River had many tricks in her arsenal. The Slowpoke still didn't look that bothered.

Throughout Buzz's instructions to the Mystic Pokémon, the sky seemed to darken once more. A quick glance to the Slowpoke that rested upon the shore; it was flicking its tail and its fingers, though the expression on its face was still blank. Buzz assumed this was Rain Dance, as the gentle rain drops soon turned very heavy once again. This wasn't a brilliant outcome, though his electric types fared brilliantly in the rain, River would have difficulty flying as her wings became sodden and visibiity would decrease.

River's ghostly wings dove down upon the pink creature, hitting it right on the back. With a twitch from Slowpoke's tail, rings of water spiralled out of the now disturbed lake. Buzz wanted to shout out, but there wasn't enough time. Slowpoke threw its body weight into River, pushing her into the path of the Water Pulse. The spiralling water rings wash over River, but she flew up regardless. Her flight seemed a little strained which was unfortunate, but he had plenty of moves at his disposal it was just about finding the best combination to bring the Slowpoke into capture range.

"Why exactly do you want another Psychic type? After all, you have me and as for water types, you have Ascherusia and the washing machine," River questioned, whilst she flew back to Buzz ready to mount their next attack.

"Not that I have to answer to you, I just know Slowbro and Slowking are both powerful creatures and they would be an asset to my team when competetively battling outside of the gym," Buzz said outloud. He often found that irritation led him to forego telepathic communication accidently. The mind link between human and psychic types had proven to be almost essential for rangers, Buzz couldn't think of a ranger who didn't have a telepathic partner Pokémon, but then again he didn't know all the rangers personally so he wasn't certain. We need to get its health down some more and try and put some form of status ailment on it, before it is catchable.

Buzz knew that having working at the electric gym, and being surrounded by electric types for so long, River had developed the ability to harness electrical energy for both paralysis and inflicting damage. It was a feat most flying types could not, Slowpoke were naturally weak to electric attacks so he had to find a way to work this attack in. He looked up to the blackened sky and smiled.

"Okay, River. I want you to use Thunder Wave, but I want it descending from above in a very visible web. It should fuse with the rain in the air and create a paralysis inducing web that decsends down upon the Slowpoke slowly," Buzz instructed, "then when it's distracted, I want you to Teleport behind Slowpoke and release your Hidden Power upon it right before the web hits."

River nodded and turned back to the Slowpoke, then Buzz spotted sparks flickering through the rain droplets that splattered from her wings. River began weaving the electricity into the sky. Soon there was a sparkling net of electricity spiralling down towards the Slowpoke. Buzz waited to see whether his plan would be successful.

Buzz looked a little frustrated as he answered something River said to him telepathically. That he wasn't talking to her through the mind link probably meant that he was getting upset, though she didn't know why. Haji didn't either, and they decided they weren't going to poke their noses in to find out.

Then he seemed to figure out a plan and called his next attack. He told River to use a Thunder Wave, but instead of the fast-shooting bolts that Pokémon normally used to inflict a paralyzing wrap around a foe, he wanted her to instead use the sky and make it come down in a web-like fashion. Then he ordered her to use Hidden Power on the Slowpoke once it was distracted. If this went well, he'd be able to deal a lot of damage and also inflict a status that would make the Water-type easier to catch.

River went to work, concentrating on the sky above Slowpoke. Ivy caught the sparks traveling between drops. The bolts flashed in and out, coming down in a spiral in a net above the wild Pokémon. The Slowpoke's eyes tilted upward in response, watching the lightning get closer. She was moving her paws a little bit, and Ivy kept her sight on her as she started to do something.

The water around the bolts started to freeze, and drops of rain started to form into small chunks of ice. Ivy saw what she was doing now; she was trying to slow the electricity down with the small icy gusts it was sending upward. Unfortunately, focusing her attention on the incoming Thunder Wave took her attention off of the Xatu.

River disappeared in a flash, reappearing behind the pink Pokémon. Then the air around her cackled, and a dozen small yellow orbs formed around her, all shining and flashing with electricity. Ivy knew what type of Hidden Power River had now, controlling the bolts.

She lashed out with the energy just as the net of electricity came down, and since she was distracted, the Slowpoke was hit hard. The net of paralyzing energy wrapped around her limbs then, falling over her like a silk blanket and coiling between any space it could.

Then, in a burst of energy, the Icy Wind took a different direction and came down on River instead, blasting her with chilly winds and chunks of ice that embedded themselves into her feathers. Then the Slowpoke edged forward while River was occupied, and she slipped into the water with a sizzle as the bolts hit the water.

She was probably getting worn down now, and that Paralysis might affect her more because of it. Buzz probably knew that, so she figured he'd try to capture soon. That was, if he could get her out of the water.

ooc: lol glitchy thread, also I thought there was Park Balls in the Santa's Sack ... turns out they're Hyper Balls -_- yay for unnecessary Super Ball usage.

Buzz watched as River executed the plan perfectly; both the web of descending electricty and the Hidden Power attack. They had spent a long time developing the use of electricity, working particularly well with Emolga, who was also part flying type. River could soon harness a basic electrical attack to great effect.

Meanwhile Slowpoke seemed to be using Icy Wind, in an effort to slow down the web of electricity, this was just as Buzz had hoped. It would be distracted enough to allow River to hit it hard from behind.

Buzz thought hard about what to do, he didn't have much time because the Slowpoke would be too far under water if he didn't act fast. River, first use your Heat Wave attack to raise your body temperature to melt the ice in your wings. Then I want you to use Psychic on Slowpoke to raise it out of the water, that's when I will throw the Poké Ball. Hopefully the psychic will not only lift Slowpoke so that I can capture it, the damaging side effect of your telepathic energy being forced onto its body should bring its health down far enough so that we can make an easy capture.

"Wow, use fire to melt ice, I never would have been able to figure that one out on my own," River snarked back preparing the attack.

Buzz waited to see the attacks unfold, and began to route through his back. He was looking through a special sack he had obtained at christmas time, when the Pokémon in the park started acting very oddly. He wanted a Park Ball, but the only ones he could find were Hyper Ball; a more expensive and sophisticated capture device for higher evolved Pokémon. He didn't want to waste one of these on a Slowpoke so instead he pulled out his standard Super Ball. It was the mid range capture device the park offered, and was more powerful than was necessary for Slowpoke, but he had no choice.

He was ready in waiting to throw the Super Ball when River managed to lift it up and out of the water. He didn't doubt for a second that River had the psychic capability to lift the rather small Slowpoke.

Buzzer instructed his Pokémon to act silently, so Ivy just watched the events unfold. River first used a burst of fire to clear the ice from her wings, a powerful blast that easily defrosted the chips and just left water behind. The Xatu shook her wings out and then concentrated on the next part of their plan while Buzz rummaged around in his bag to find a ball.

He finally found a Super Ball, though he didn't look to happy about using it. Maybe he had the wrong equipment. She felt River's mind flux as she located the Slowpoke. She was too tired to fight back, and the small pink Pokémon was easily lifted out of the water. The Psychic attack wore on Slowpoke's mind, making her even weaker.

River held her still while Buzz launched the ball, and it hit off the top of her head. She was immediately sucked up in a beam of red light, and then the ball stayed hovering in the air as it closed, affected by River's energy. The device pinged and lit up in the center, and the Xatu floated it back to her, where she dropped it next to the Tynamo.

“Well, that went pretty smoothly. It's too bad the Stunfisk disk failed, but at least now that the Park finally upgraded our equipment, the player's not gonna break the disk.” She shook out her vest again as the rain stopped, hoping the re-emerging sun would dry it before the expedition was over.

“Do you wanna head over to the whirlpools or maybe the lake caves next?” she asked. “I don't know what else you want to catch, but if anything else, it should be nice to see some new scenery. Unless you got a better idea. If you're not really feeling anything else, we can loop back around to the front.”

A lot of people caught what they wanted pretty early on in the Lakes, since a lot of Pokémon could be found in all the water that surrounded the front gate. There still were some fun things to see further on though, and she hadn't been back there in a while. It was Buzz's choice though, and if she remembered correctly, he wanted to do this as a speed run.

“Well, that went pretty smoothly. It's too bad the Stunfisk disk failed, but at least now that the Park finally upgraded our equipment, the player's not gonna break the disk.” Buzz nodded back to Ivy; it was always kind of odd that the players broke the discs after five uses, but they had got used to it.

“Do you wanna head over to the whirlpools or maybe the lake caves next?” she asked. “I don't know what else you want to catch, but if anything else, it should be nice to see some new scenery. Unless you got a better idea. If you're not really feeling anything else, we can loop back around to the front.”

Buzz considered the possibilities, there wasn't that many choices for new places to go in the lakes. "Well I don't know if I will see anything else I want, but it isn't often that we get a day off so I think we will carry on," Buzz said, "might as well make the most of the nice day."

Buzz had seen that the rain had stopped, the rain caused by Pokémon never lasted particularly long. Buzz was hopeful there would be at least something he could capture, even if it was just to trade for something he wanted.

Buzz didn't know if he'd catch anything else, but he wasn't against just spending some time outside on a nice day. She understood about the time off thing; it wasn't often that she took days off herself. She thought the last time she had was when Haji and she had opened their bond. She took two weeks off to settle it after it caused them problems on a run in Deckbi.

Since he didn't say which way he wanted to go, Ivy decided to venture toward the Lake caves. They were relatively new, at least as far as traveling in them went. If she remembered, a couple of the paths went under one of the lakes and popped out on the far side of the area. She didn't know if they'd get that far, but it'd be neat to shuffle around in the sand for a bit.

They walked on, skirting the other lakes and going through one of the grassy plains. It was more like a beach than a field though, since the soil was a little thicker sand. It still slid around under their feet, and not much vegetation grew except for the thin, stringy grasses. Soon they came to a sunken cave, arriving at their destination.

The path angled down a little steeply, but she knew the floor leveled out at the bottom. It was pretty dark sometimes, and all the caverns had that aquatic scent to them. This one had been the first one discovered, after some hasty Trainer hadn't watched where he was walking and face-planted down the slide.

Another small pool sat beside the cavern, and she noticed a small blue Pokémon playing in it. It had a long ribbon coming from its head, and it looked much like a Baltoy as far as a large head and tiny body went. A decorative red jewel sat in its center, and it was smiling as it splashed about in the water.

“Oh, look, it's Phione.” As they approached, the baby legend laughed and looked up at them with hapy blue eyes.

Buzz realised he hadn't actually said where he wanted to go next before Ivy had wandered off towards the caverns. Buzz smiled, conviently enough this was where he was going to say to go, he half wondered whether the Espeon that trailed beside Ivy's legs had any part in this. Shrugging Buzz followed; River was flying just above head height. She had managed the battle with Slowpoke with little stress or damage so that was good.

The caverns were a fairly recent find for the Park Rangers, they naturally had always been there, but until recentlly they had been inaccessible. Rangers were always looking for new locations within the general areas mapped out at Headquaters. They often found themselves visiting the same places so it was more for their own boredom than anything else. Buzz was sure if he never saw that damn rocky path leading towards Mount Deckbi, it would still be too soon.

Another small pool sat beside the cavern, and Buzz spotted the blue Pokémon playing in it, just after Ivy spotted it. Buzz chuckled, there was much debate as to whether Phione was actually a legendary Pokémon. After all it was the offspring of Manaphy and Ditto, but Park rules had it listed as a Legend and as such unobtainable.

As he had with the other legendary encounters he pulled out his Pokédex and logged the appearance. The trip had been good for his Pokédex, there were only nine registered Legends that resided in the Lakes and he had seen a third of them on one run. He lifted the camera out of the back and captured a photo of the curious Pokémon. "Well, sure has been a Legendary run," Buzz said in a joking tone.

Buzz recorded the information of Phione into his Pokédex before snapping a picture. It sure seemed like he was encountering a lot of rare Pokémon today. He'd surely hit the jackpot at the Main Outpost with the picture collectors. “Well, sure has been a Legendary run,” he said, and she snickered.

“Oh you are so punny,” she replied dryly, not being able to stop the small smile on her face. “Hopefully we'll find another 'mon you like before leaving. Should be something interesting in the caves. Shall we?”

She stepped up to the ledge and peered down. It was pretty dark, but she knew they'd adjust to the difference once they were down there for a few minutes. She put a foot into the sand and slid a little. Once she got her balance, she continued down the slope, sliding as dust and dirt flew up. Buzz followed behind, and they both waited for all the sand to settle before going anywhere.

The walls were embedded with a type of hardened coral remains she had only seen a few times. They were like sponges, and they filled the place with natural designs. The sand had hardened to make arches and pillars throughout the room, and she could see several tunnels stretching in different directions. If their investigations were right, they led to all different parts of the Lakes.

She hoped there weren't any leaks though. That was the danger of being below the water surfaces. If the ceiling got damaged, all the liquid would flow down here and it'd have nowhere to go but fill the caverns up. As a precaution, she took out her flashlight. It wasn't too bad down here, but deeper in would be darker. She didn't want them falling into a pool if they could help it.

Ivy picked a cave at random and followed it, Haji at her side and Buzz somewhere behind. They trailed through twists and turns, seeing coral-marked walls oscillate with smooth ones and others that marked the previous water lines in green and blue lines. Shells were lodged in the surfaces too, and some of them sparkled as the light flashed over them.

They came into a somewhat open room with four other paths. In the center of the room sat a yellow duck-like Pokémon with a little bit of a slow look on its face. It was surrounded with colorful seashells all arranged in a ring around it. It tilted its head when they came in and brought a hand up to its face. “Psy... duck?” it asked.

“Here's another one, Buzz. Wanna take a shot?”

Buzz was sorely tempted to push Ivy down the sand, but he figured it was a bit dangerous.

The caverns were always a risky place, should the ceiling not be strong enough to hold the water above it, Ivy and Buzz would be in for an unexpected shower together. Buzz looked cautiously up at the ceiling, there was small trickles of water in various places but he shrugged and carried on behind Ivy.

Ivy picked a cave at random and followed it, Haji at her side and Buzz somewhere behind. “Here's another one, Buzz. Wanna take a shot?”

Buzz shook his head, he had already caught a Slowpoke, which was a Pokémon that had Psychic capabilities. Buzz knew Golduck had a different role, but given that he wasn't a big fan of water types as it was he decided to move on. He decided to keep his Poké Dolls tucked away, if Psyduck decided it didn't want to go away Buzz thought it couldn't hurt to try and capture it. After all if something better came along it could easily be released.

OOC: So trying to escape, but don't use a doll. I'll battle if its a fail.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Buzz shook his head at her question. She didn't really take him to be a Water-type Trainer, and since he already had River and the newly caught Slowpoke, there wasn't much need for another Pokémon able to wield Psychic energy. Unless, of course, he was thinking about switching gyms or something.

The duck just watched them as they tried to move on, keeping its body still while trying to follow them with its head. It got to the point where it couldn't turn more while staying planted on the ground, so it fell beak first into the sand with a plop. Ivy watched it slap a hand to its face and just shook her head as they moved on.

They came to another room after winding down a few more halls, and Haji abruptly told her to stop, moving his body in front of her. She shined the light in the room, and the beam shimmered off of the standing water.

“Yikes,” she said, wondering how deep it was.

There was a thin winding path going through the middle of the room, but the rest of it was covered in water. She didn't know if these were natural pools or if there was a leak somewhere. She'd have to make a note of it and either get someone or come back down here herself to see if the water was rising at all. Either way, since she didn't know how deep they were, they probably should stay out of them. The water was so dark that even her flashlight couldn't clue them in.

The path looked okay though, even at a foot wide, so they should be alright to cross. She took one step forward when shifting water drew her eyes to the left. She shined her light to illuminate the creature there.

A fish with white spiky fins was watching them, its red eyes hooked on the group of people. It had a black stripe down its back, lined by red, and the rest of its body was green. She recognized it as a Basculin, one of the newly discovered Pokémon.

“Want to battle this one, Buzz? It might be tricky in this room, but I hear Basculin are decent battlers.”

Buzz and the group moved forward, the Psyduck didn't seem particularly interested in following. Insteadm, it seemed to want to keep turning its head as we moved. Unfortunately for Psyduck, once we got out of range of its neck movement it lost its balance, falling forward bill first. Once it had clambered back to its feet, Buzz chuckled as it face palmed. Ivy seemed to shake her head as she carried on to the next cavern.

They entered a new room after following the path around, then Ivy stopped so suddenly; Buzz only just managed to react in time and still almost toppled into the female ranger. As Ivy lifted her torch to light the room Buzz spotted Haji stood in front of her, clearly only one of them was paying attention.

There was a thin winding path going through the middle of the room, but the rest of it was covered in water. The dark as night water gently shimmered in the torchlight as it brushed along the thin pathway leading through. Ivy aimed her torch at the water surface causing two red glows as it reflected off a pair of eyes.

A fish with white spiky fins was watching them, its red eyes hooked on the group of people. It had a black stripe down its back, lined by red, and the rest of its body was green. “Want to battle this one, Buzz? It might be tricky in this room, but I hear Basculin are decent battlers.” Buzz shrugged and pulled out his Pokédex and scanned it to get the information on the new Pokémon.

"Basculin; the Hostile Pokémon. Red and blue Basculin usually do not get along, but sometimes members of one school mingle with the other's school," the electronic device said. Buzz shrugged and figured it couldn't hurt to try and capture it. Joe and Leo, were both water gym leaders, maybe one of them would trade something for it. The only problem was, as Ivy had pointed out, the environment really wasn't in Buzz's favour. Thundera and Jolteon would both be at a disadvantage due to the lack of land terrain to move about on. River was his only choice, but she had taken damage in the last battle against Slowpoke so he would have to be careful.

Ok, River, looks like you're up again. I want you to start things of simply, by delving into our fishy opponent's mind. Psychic should deal out some damage and while it is reeling from having you force your way in. I want you to land on the small path and Roost to try and recover some of your health. We're starting this battle off at a disadvantage, I want that minimised.

Buzz felt River search out through the psychic ether looking for the Basculin's conscious. It was a problem of being a psychic types mind link, you often tuned into what they were feeling or looking for so you soon could develop the ability to feel other conscious powers. It was more noticible with familiar people so Buzz could feel Ivy's conscious; he was no way powerful enough to approach it telepathically, but it was there. He focussed back on the battle it was a nice simple start, he was hoping to get some insight on the battling style of the opponent.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Buzzer took a moment to scan the Pokémon with his Pokédex, adding the data to his collection. At first she wasn't sure if he was going to battle, but then River shifted and started to move at some unspoken command. The Xatu was probably the best choice here, since the battle field was mostly water. A lot of Pokémon needed some sort of ground to stand on, but at least River could fly around a bit.

Her eyes glowed as Ivy felt the energy in the air crackle and shift. That signified she was using a mental attack. The Ranger looked over to the fish, and sure enough, its face was contorted with a strange expression, and its whole body was tense as it kept still. Not all Pokémon could handle another forcing themselves into their mind. As far as she knew, Dark-type Pokémon were the only ones that resisted it. It was probably because their minds were too dark and complex. A Psychic-type could get lost there.

River twisted his mind as she landed on the strip of path through the center of the room, trying to rest a bit before the battle really started since she was damaged from the last one. She Roosted on the land as Basculin snapped out of being stunned, trying to shake off the disorienting feeling it must feel. It swerved back and forth through the water, making ripples as it spun.

Then it seemed to get control of itself, and water started surging around its tail. The water churned until the fish released it, and Ivy and Haji had to back up as the Basculin waved his appendage, releasing the water in a wave that washed over River as she was resting.

The water soaked her feathers, and since the cave was a bit damper, she didn't know if the bird would have trouble drying them off like in the last battle. Hopefully, the wet feathers wouldn't affect her flying too much. She was already at a little bit of a disadvantage here.

The fish wasn't done attacking though, or at least preparing for it. Basculin then started swimming in tight circles, waiting for the water to swirl. Then he moved on to another spot, and soon, the water climbed into a tower as it spun, the water tornadoes flicking water everywhere as they prepared to strike the Xatu.

The whirlpools roared as they echoed through the cavern, and Ivy hoped they wouldn't affect the room's stability.
