    Ranger Makina Auran

    *~~~~~~~~~*

The Park, unfortunately, had seen better days.

Due to the traveling season coming to a close, along with most Rangers picking up a second job in order to make ends meet, the main office was nearly deserted. As Makina entered the building, the only other person she saw was a clearly bored secretary dozing away behind the front counter.

Huh...I knew business was going to be slow, but this is almost a ghost town. Makina thought to herself, closing the door behind her quietly. It had been a few months since she had been to the Park, and even then she had to cut her last Run short due to yet another family emergency. Since that time, she had received no calls about taking Trainers through the Park. “Makes me almost wonder if they're shutting this place down,” she said, turning around to face the humanoid Pokemon behind her, “What do you think, Aria?”

The Gardevoir gave the surrounding area a scrutinizing look, appearing to be just as confused as her partner. <We would have received at least some warning first if that was happening... still, something seems off.>

Try to see if you can reach any of the Rangers then,” Makina replied, rubbing the back of her neck in annoyance. There had to be at least a couple Rangers on the island; even on holidays someone had to stay behind to make sure no one tried to sneak a Pokemon or ten when everyone was off. “I'll try to talk to Sleeping Beauty over there while you're doing that.”

Aria nodded, closing her eyes in concentration- and quickly opened them as another Pokemon Teleported directly in front of her. While the newcomer had a similar shape and color scheme to a Gardevoir, the darker green hue and blade-arms it possessed clearly marked it as a Gallade. <What in the world...>

Makina turned around, hearing Aria's remark over their link. “Is that Dual?” she asked, looking over at the second Psychic Pokemon in confusion. There was only one Gallade she could think of offhand that belonged to a Ranger, but this one looked different. While Dual seemed as laid back as his partner, this one seemed ready to strike at the first target that annoyed him.

The Gallade glared at the Ranger in return, a glint of anger appearing in his eyes as he heard the remark. Walking stiffly over to the human, he held out a slip of paper dangling from his hand.

<Actually, that is Vergil,> Aria responded to her partner's question, actually sounding meek for once. <He's been looking for us actually, said he just missed us when we were leaving Blackthorn.>

Oh. Shit. “Sorry about that, we were just heading here to see why we hadn't received any assignments in forever,” Makina said to Vergil, accepting the note from the clearly ticked-off Gallade. As soon as the paper was taken, the Psychic-type disappeared once more.

<Ivy must be either really angry or busy, using Vergil,> Aria remarked, suppressing a shudder. <So, what did she have to say?>

Oh, only that I need to get a new phone... and that over half the staff hasn't been here since we've been gone.” Makina replied, making her way over to the bulletin board. Sure enough, there were a few requests to enter the Park that had yet to even been accepted by a Ranger yet- even one that had been places soon after her break. Snagging two off of the board, she took a quick glance at both of them before slamming them down on the front desk to wake the still-slumbering secretary.

I'mawakeIswear!” the young man called out, nearly falling out of his chair. Once he had regained his bearings, he took a look over at the papers and Makina, “You're taking these, then?”

No, I just did that for the hell of it, Makina remarked silently. Taking a deep breath to keep her cool, she finally replied, “Contact both of these Trainers and tell them I'll be able to take their run. Schedule the one for Mount Deckbi for later today, and I'll take the one for the Power Plant tomorrow. Just send all the info to my PDA.”

Um, and your name would be...?”

I'm going to have to start wearing my nametag. “Look for Makina in the records. Just don't fall asleep on the job again, okay?” Not wanting to hear the secretary's reasoning that 'no, I wasn't asleep, honest' excuse, Makina walked over to Aria. Judging from the amused look on the Gardevoir's face, she had watched the entire display. “We're going to have to head to Mount Deckbi. Remember where to go?”

<My memory is not as bad as yours, thank you very much,> Aria said, enveloping herself and her partner in a shimmering aura. Moments later, the two Teleported away.

Axion stopped in front of the wooden signpost that marked the ranger outpost for Mt. Deckbi and craned his neck upwards, marvelling at the sight of the massive volcano that dwarfed the horizon in front of him. The whole area was cloudy, or it could be more accurately said that it was ashy, as the glowing red area above the grey clouds was likely the molten lava spewing a fresh load of ash into the volcano’s domain. The location contrasted sharply against Axion’s last trip to the National Park, Mt. Oktori offering a frozen wasteland that shone brightly in the day, with none of the redness or heat that accompanied the mountain before him.

He palmed one of his pokeballs, the pokemon inside a recent acquisition from the park itself. He had brought Machamp here both for the nostalgia as well as the power he could provide. He hoped the pokemon he was searching for would show up, but he was interested to see just what him and his ranger would find. He had been given last-minute notice, and had been forced to utilize Alakazam’s not quite honed teleporting abilities to get to the entrance. Safely tucked away where he couldn’t use him, he waited for his ranger, Makina, to show up. Almost directly on cue, a flash of light enveloped a previously empty area, and a female and Gardevoir teleported from somewhere to here. Hoping he had found the right person, Axion walked up to her. “I’m Axion. Are you my ranger Makina?”

    Ranger Makina Auran

    *~~~~~~~~~*

True to her word, Aria remembered exactly where to go. As both Pokemon and Ranger reappeared once more, they were surrounded by the near barren, rocky ground that identified the region surrounding Mount Deckbi. While the volcano that gave the area its name was still far in the distance, the smoke and ash that it sometimes spewed forth was quite visible in the sky.

Surprisingly, there was already someone waiting for them. A young man, seeing the pair Teleport in, approached them. “I’m Axion. Are you my ranger, Makina?”

That would be me,” Makina replied, greeting the Trainer while trying to hide her confusion. She had just accepted the Run- how had he shown up so quickly? Hopefully there had not been another mixup and he had been waiting at the Outpost this while time! “The Gardevoir here is Aria, and she'll be accompanying us for this Run.”

<No, he just got here as well,> Aria said, sensing the Ranger's thoughts. <There is a faint Psychic residue on him, one of the teleporter Pokemon at the front gate must have given him a lift.>

Finally, some good news. I was worried everyone had abandoned their work. Realizing that Axion was likely wondering what was taking so long, Makina continued her introduction while walking towards the gate marking the entrance into the region. “According to our records you have entered the Park before, so I won't go over the basics. Still, if you have any questions feel free to ask at any time.”

Opening the gate was fairly easy. Unlike some of the regions (the Plant's complex opening system coming to mind,) this entrance simply consisted of finding the right key. Entering the area, on the other hand, proved to be a little harder. As the gate swung open, a small simian creature stood firmly on the path leading further. The Pokemon's red fur seemed to match its fiery personality, for it chittered something in an accusing tone towards the group.

Someone is a little impatient,” Makina remarked, holding the gate open while looking over at Axion. “Were you interested in a Pansear, or want to try talking it into letting us pass?”

“That would be me,” the ranger replied, a hint of confusion flashing across her face before the bright smile returned. “The Gardevoir here is Aria, and she'll be accompanying us for this Run.” A moment of silence ensued, and Axion surmised that the two were having some sort of psychic discussion, so he patiently waited for it to finish. “According to our records you have entered the Park before, so I won't go over the basics. Still, if you have any questions feel free to ask at any time.”

She then stepped towards the metal fence, its steel bars made to keep both pokemon in and thieving poachers out. he key slid in noiselessly, and Makina swung open the gate to reveal the path up towards the smoking tower of molten stone. But before anyone could get more than a step in, a crimson monkey planted itself in the middle of the path, as if to prevent the three bipeds from proceeding into the park proper. Makina looked at it, then looked at Axion. “Someone is a little impatient,” she remarked, holding the gate open. “Were you interested in a Pansear, or want to try talking it into letting us pass?”

Axion, still surprised at the sudden appearance, consider the pokemon for a moment before shaking his head. “Not overly interested in Pansear, so if we can get around him without bothering him too much it would be much preferred.”

    Ranger Makina Auran

    *~~~~~~~~~*

Axion seemed just as surprised to see a Pokemon waiting for them right from the get-go. After appearing to mull over the thought for a moment though, he shook his head in reply. “Not overly interested in Pansear, so if we can get around him without bothering him too much it would be much preferred.”

Fortunately for everyone involved, Pansear seemed to take the hint. Seeing that no one was sending out an opponent to battle him, the small Fire-type grumbled something under its breath and walked off. With Pansear out of the way, everyone was finally able to enter Mount Deckbi proper. Once the group was fully in, Makina securely locked the gate in place behind them.

The path ahead, while uneven due to the rocky terrain, was mostly deserted. Since most Pokemon in the region preferred to live in the hottest spot possible or remain hidden in one of the many caves dotting areas, the only wildlife that ventured this far out only did so to directly face any possible Trainers walking about. Since the walk was looking to be fairly uneventful for the moment, Makina went over this information with Axion.

The locals usually stay in an area that fits what best matches their typing- the Fire types stick close to any open volcanic vents, for example,” the Ranger explained. “While there is always the odd Pokemon who decides that they want to try something new or are just traveling through, if you're after a specific type the best place to check is their home environment. Are you after anything in particular?”

After roughly twenty minutes, the path finally split off into two sections. While the current trail lay towards the mountain, there lay a walkway to the right that led towards a small cave off to the side. Before Makina could ask Axion which way he preferred to take, a nearby pile of ash began to tremble. The soot quivered a bit, then the top part was blown off as its occupant gave a large sneeze.

Finally revealed, the vulpine face of another red-furred Pokemon blinked up at the two humans. While still half-covered, there was no doubt that the creature would possess six curled tails once fully visible.

A Vulpix, out here?” Makina attempted to wave the now-airborne soot out of the way, not wanting to breathe any of the stuff in. “They're quite the find though. Did you want one, Axion?”

After the group waited for a moment, Pansear, apparently disgruntled due to nobody battling him, began mumbling in its private language and sauntered away into the rocky wasteland that surrounded the volcano that was Mt. Deckbi. With the first encounter peacefully out of the way, Axion, Makina, and Aria stepped through the steel gateway and into the park itself. With a quick lock resecuring the gate against further people entering, the three began the long trek up the rocky path.

The trail was barren compared to most, a testament to the destructive power of heat, fire, and ash combined to create a harsh and almost hellish atmosphere, especially near the hovering ash clouds halfway up the mountain. Axion noticed that, unlike Mt. Oktori, where pokemon had been much more active and playful in the area surrounding the mountain, Mt. Deckbi was a fairly devoid of life. He attempted to perceive any hint of motion that would betray the signs of life to hint at a pokemon. THe path was rocky, but offered very few hiding places. Any trees that had tried to grow were stunted and dead, twigs long dry in the arid heat surrounding him. He was now he had been contacted while he was in a warmer climate already, so he was wearing a t-shirt instead of his normal grey jacket. The green of it contrasted sharply against the browns and reds that dotted the landscape, making him feel like a target in no-mans land.

As he continued to ponder about the lack of wild pokemon, Makina somehow read his mind and answered the question for him. “The locals usually stay in an area that fits what best matches their typing- the Fire types stick close to any open volcanic vents, for example,” the Ranger explained. “While there is always the odd Pokemon who decides that they want to try something new or are just traveling through, if you're after a specific type the best place to check is their home environment. Are you after anything in particular?”

Axion nodded. “I came here mainly to look for some of the digging pokemon, notably the Drilbur and Onix lines. So the caves sound like a pretty good location. Although if we do hit a fire type or two along the way I’m not against some type coverage.”

The path continued on, the trail’s angle becoming steeper then flattening out repeatedly. Axion felt as though this area was well travelled, yet not made to be a simple romp around the park like he imagined the Botanical Gardens to be. This was for trainers who wanted a challenge, and he was enjoying it. Eventually the party reached a split in the road. The one trail took another uphill climb, and appeared to lazily make its way towards the mountain itself and the lava pools that dripped down it like melting candle wax. The other path was far narrower, almost the equivalent of a game trail. He could see to the side that it perhaps led to some indent in the mountain, or even a cave. He intended to suggest the lower path when a pile of soot exploded into an airborne cloud of grey ash, making his nose tickle in anticipation of his own sneeze. A red furred fox like face popped up from the now diminished grey pile, almost too cute in its innocence and looking directly at the three beings that had intruded upon its private shelter.

“A Vulpix, out here?” Makina, again surprised by the pokemon’s appearance, said. Her arms attempted to wave the now-airborne soot out of the way, not wanting to breathe any of the stuff in. “They're quite the find though. Did you want one, Axion?”

After considering it a moment, Axion grabbed one of his poke balls. “Actually yes, Vulpix can be quite useful. So, I call out ou, Flygon!” The green dragon appeared in a flash of red light, which was almost invisible in the surroundings. Floating slightly above the ground, Flygon looked around as he came to terms with his sudden change of surroundings. His eyes eventually locked on to the Vulpix sitting patiently in the small pile.

“Flygon, time to see what kind of power you’ve got” Axion said, a persuasive grin etched on his normally impassive face. “We’re going to try and catch this Vulpix to start off our run here on a solid note. First off, I want you to use your wings to throw up some of that ash around Vulpix like a sandstorm or ash twister, if you will. Mainly we just want to lower her accuracy and maybe some tiny damage, as those ash particles aren’t fun to see through or feel flying around her. The more ash you manage to get up, the better. Make it a literal swirling maelstrom right around Vulpix. Then I want you to shoot a small mud shot right at her face, and hopefully blind her so she can’t see your next moves at all, and we can wrap this up fast. Finally, rise upward a hair with your wings, and slam your feet into the ground to offer a decently powered Bulldoze attack on Vulpix, we want the ground hitting her with a fair amount of force on her while she’s stuck inside the ash tornado and temporarily covered in mud. Just keep the attacks rolling at a nice pace, and try not to go overboard and knock her out. Just use our instincts.”

Preparing to cover his face in case the ash decided to get out of hand with Flygon’s eagerness to fight, Axion waited to see how well the combo set he had put together in his overactive mind functioned in reality.

Like before, Axion seemed to consider the offer once more. Unlike their encounter with Pansear, however, the Trainer pulled out a Pokeball. “Actually yes, Vulpix can be quite useful.” With that, he tossed the sphere forward and called out, “So, I call out you, Flygon!”

The Pokeball opened forth in a burst of light, revealing a large draconian-shaped Pokemon. While some people insisted that this particular species looked more insect-like than anything else due to the large red lens covering their eyes, one only had to watch their movements for a few moments to realize there was nothing Bug-related to them all. Even though Flygon's green form stuck out like a sore thumb in this landscape, he appeared indifferent to the area and focused on the wild Vulpix instead.

Axion grinned, perhaps liking to see such determination in his Pokemon. “Flygon, time to see what kind of power you’ve got.” He then went over his plan with his teammate, with Vulpix watching curiously from its ash pile.

<You seem indifferent to his plan,> Aria noted, seeing that her partner's attention was still on Flygon rather then Axion's tactics. <It sounds solid, if long-winded.>

It's not the plan I'm worried about, it's the Pokemon, Makina silently replied back. He seems more focused on what his opponent will do and nothing else. After waiting a moment and receiving no reply from Aria, she attempted to shrug off her concern. Flygon were used to the desert heat- a volcano wasn't much different from its home environment.

At this point, Axion appeared to be finishing explaining the plan. “Just keep the attacks rolling at a nice pace, and try not to go overboard and knock her out. Just use our instincts, ” he advised, earning a slight nod from the Flygon.

The Mystic Pokemon didn't waste any time, beating his wings at an impressive speed to kick up a decent amount of soot. Once enough was gathered he gave a single strong gust of wind forward, blowing the accumulated ash straight towards Vulpix in an attempt to blind and hurt the creature.

The attack succeeded, causing the Vulpix to howl and vainly attempt to clear her eyes with a paw. The cry increased in pitch, escalating into a battle-cry that would give the small Fire-type increased determination in her attacks. Now clearly angry, Vulpix quickly generated a forest-green hued orb of energy and lobbed it at Flygon, the attack striking home. While the attack clearly did some damage, the Dragon-type looked ready for more.

With the first phase complete, Flygon lowered to the ground in an attempt to collect mud for his next attack. Unfortunately, the volcanic ground contained little to use save hard-packed dirt, rock, and ash. Still, he refused to let the plan fail; gathering a large amount of soot in his tail, Flygon tossed it towards Vulpix. While the attack managed to further blind Vulpix, it did extremely minimal damage.

It very rarely rains around this area, and there are few spots with a water source,” Makina explained, noting Flygon's improvised attack, “Moves like Mud-Slap or Mud Shot will not work well here.”

Clearly angry that his attack had failed to deal any lasting damage, Flygon took to the sky once more. The Dragon-type appeared to be sizing up the perfect spot to slam down on the ground and knock Vulpix off-balance- but the fox seemed to catch on just what was happening. Her eyes began to glow a light blue, and soon Flygon's form was outlined in the same hue.

Vulpix is preparing Extrasensory,” Makina warned Axion, “If she pulls it off, Flygon will likely crash.”

Wasting little time at all, the green dragon type pokemon flapped his trapezoidal wings in the direction of the ash covering Vulpix. The pile rapidly transformed into a grey cloud, and it was launched at the red fox with a final push. Vulpix responded with desperate thrashing, a feral howl escaping its mouth midst the chaotic dust. From out of the cloud, a vibrant green sphere of offensive energy hit Flygon, the pokemon still able to see enough to launch a counterattack. Flygon shook itself, weathering the damage well enough to continue on, a determined look on its face.

While Vulpix returned to its task of clearing its eyesight, Flygon proceeded to phase two of the plan. He landed, his feet lightly touching the ground as his small hands made an attempt at collecting the nearby dirt for a mud shot. The hard rocky soil that surrounded and created the path made this difficult, but Flygon managed to make do with a combination of pebbles and ash. The debris was rapidly brushed to set on the end of the pokemon’s tail, and with a whip-like reflex, the pile was flung toward the small Vulpix. The attack seemed to further the earlier effects of the ash cloud, lowering Vulpix’s reduced vision and causing at least a hair of damage. But Flygon seemed dissatisfied with this. “It very rarely rains around this area, and there are few spots with a water source,” Makina explained, noting Flygon's improvised attack, “Moves like Mud-Slap or Mud Shot will not work well here.”

Axion nodded in agreement. “I had kinda just planned on using a variety of moves to decrease its vision more than cause damage; And as the attack seemingly did what I wanted, good enough for the moment.” Turning back to the once again flying pokemon, Axion watched it look around on the ground. It darted its head, seeking the weakest location for the perfect attempt at bulldozing Vulpix into submission. But as it did so, the fire type finally regained some sense of its composure, despite the area around its eyes still being partially covered with a teared up clump of ash. From behind the gunk came a blue glow, casting the ground ahead of it in a brownish-purple color that contrasted against the rest of the ground. As the glow intensified, so did a matching halo beginning to form around Flygon itself. “Vulpix is preparing Extrasensory,” Makina warned Axion, “If she pulls it off, Flygon will likely crash.”

Sparing little time, Axion quickly chose the first move that would offer him and Flygon a moment of safety. “Flygon, forget bulldoze. We need to hide you, so use your height above the ground and gravity to fly down and use dig fast.” He knew that Flygon was an excellent digger, him having seen the move performed by its earlier evolutions in both zoos and battles. Trapinch were masters of the move, so he could only assume that Flygon hadn't lost his edge in evolving. “Once Vulpix loses hold of you, come on up from underneath it and surprise Vulpix with those sharp little Dragon Claws of yours, give it some swipes and push it back. Maybe enough swipes will get it weak enough for a capture.” Axion, hoping the dig would offer enough of a chance to avoid further damage, tensely stood back and waited for round two.

Flygon began to follow the command, turning his body in midair to attempt landing head-first instead. Unfortunately, he also had to battle the Extrasensory that was doing its best to drag the draconic creature straight down to the ground. In a battle of wills, Flygon barely managed to reorient himself right as he slammed into the rocky earth. Despite shuddering from the impact, he began to dig furiously into the ground.

Vulpix, seeing that her opponent was getting away, let loose a stream of flames at the burrowing Flygon. Due to the accuracy-lowering attacks that the Dragon-type had unleashed earlier, however, Flygon managed to barely dodge the fire as he dug further down.

Come on up from underneath it and surprise Vulpix with those sharp little Dragon Claws of yours,” Axion added.

With zeal, Flygon burst free from the ground and rammed Vulpix, knocking the fox up from the force of the blow and further back due to being raked with Dragon Claw. Still, Vulpix refused to give in- mimicking Flygon's earlier maneuver, she wreathed herself in fire once more and used the gravity of her own form to slam down on the Dragon-type's body. Both Pokemon were stunned from the impact, but managed to disentangle themselves a few moments later.

As Vulpix broke free, she walked away with a noticeable limp. That, along with the fact that her form was beginning to shudder, showed that the Wild Pokemon likely could not take many more similar hits.

Flygon’s green scaly body, until a moment ago rising rapidly above the ground, changed course immediately. Now, the insectoid dragon launched itself at the dry cracked ground, the glow from Vulpix’s extrasensory creating a ghostly shadow below. Flygons flight path became more erratic as he descended lower, the attack managing to take some hold despite the shifting target. With a final struggle, Vulpix managed to push Flygon into the ground with a heavy thunk, a cloud of dust forming at the point of impact. However Flygon managed to take advantage of the impact, his small arms already forming a hole in which the rest of the body followed.

Before Vulpix could accurately aim, a gout of flame burst forth from the pokemon’s mouth, engulfing the area once inhabited by Flygon. But the speed of the dragon and the accuracy reduction already caused by the earlier ground-type moves. The raging inferno died off, showing nothing but a patch of scorched earth and a hole that faintly echoed with the sound of earth being scratched away. Vulpix, seemingly unnerved by the pokemon’s disappearance, began to dart her head around, attempting to find some trace of its invisible adversary.

With another burst of dust and pebbles, Flygon erupted from beneath the surface of the path, claws glowing a brilliant blue. Outstretched, they raked against Vulpix’s diminutive form, adding damage as the remainder of Flygon’s body collided. Quickly retreating, Flygon flew away and returned to a position close to his trainer. Vulpix was momentarily staggered from the dual assault, but shook off the attacks with a violent wiggle. Stray debris flew away from the red fur as it began to flow in orange and yellow. From the faint sparkles came a wreath of fire that enveloped the fire fox, giving it a menacing look as it began to charge at the flying adversary. A mighty leap allowed Vulpix a moment of flight as gravity enhanced the pokemon’s small mass, smashing Flygon into the ground as the Flame charge hit. Both pokemon disentangled from each other a moment later, Vulpix retreating with a noticeable limp and falter in its step.

Axion watched, him noticing the slowly weakening pokemon retreat. “Flygon, utilize Sand tomb for me, create one of your nice pit traps and trap Vulpix so I can catch it more easily. When Vulpix gets caught in the bottom of your trap, use crunch to hold it in place.” In his hand, Axion aplmed a park ball, preparing to throw it if his plan worked out.

    *~~~~~~~~~*

Axion's eyes followed the wild Vulpix as it managed to limp away, likely noticing that it was beginning to run out of steam. “Flygon, utilize Sand Tomb for me. Create one of your nice pit traps and trap Vulpix so I can catch it more easily, ” he said. “When Vulpix gets caught in the bottom of your trap, use Crunch to hold it in place.”

Vulpix's ears perked up as she heard the Trainer communicate to his Flygon. Upon hearing the second attack, along with the purpose “to hold it in place,” the Fox Pokemon whirled about to face both Axion and Flygon, eyes blazing. Every fur on her body was on end, and the Fire-type let out a loud growl as if daring them to even attempt trapping her.

Upon seeing the display, Flygon didn't shrink back in the slightest- in fact, the large Dragon-type grinned in response and flapped his wings once more to collect a large amount of sand. Once he had gathered enough, he would likely charge forward.

<Reckless,> Aria sniffed, watching the Flygon's display. <Vulpix are not dense, she likely has something planned.>

And now you see why I was worried earlier, Makina replied. He may be powerful, but tunnel vision can be a serious problem against a crafty opponent. Dragon Pokemon usually arrogant as is, but Flygon's nature doesn't appear to be helping matters.

    <And you call yourself a Dark Trainer?>

Family of Dragon Trainers, you sorta learn how they act when you grow up around them. Makina shrugged off the remark, opting to see how both Pokemon would ready their next attacks. It was possible Axion had already noticed Flygon's headstrong nature in past battles, so she would hold off on saying anything just yet. After all, it was just her job to make sure the Run went smoothly.

At this point, a moderate-sized cyclone of sand was flying around Flygon as he moved his wings to keep the sandstorm aloft. With a loud roar, he flew towards Vulpix in an attempt to spiral around the Pokemon and trap her in a cyclone.

Vulpix let out an equally loud bark in reply, and a golden shimmering protective barrier surrounded the Fox. The shield successfully deflected the motes of sand along with the Flygon, causing them to bounce off harmlessly. As the storm died down, the wild Pokemon let the barrier fall and spat a small stream of stars that honed in on Flygon, doing minimal damage to the creature.

Thanks to being humiliated, Flygon was now seeing red. As soon as the Swift barrage ceased, the Desert Spirit gave a loud snort and rammed into Vulpix face-first, biting down on the Fire-type's tails with his large jaws. Vulpix gave a loud shriek, attempting to scratch off the larger Pokemon to no avail.

Flygon, turning towards Vulpix, began whipping up a breeze to collect sand. Vulpix’s face showed anger, rage, and she let out a threatening growl as the sand began whipping around in small waves. However, Flygon decided to ignore his trainer’s command to create a pit trap, instead attempting to create a cyclone. As the grit began to flow around the red-furred fire type, a sharp bark immediately erected a solid rainbow-hued barrier that kept the sand at bay, away from causing any damage. Axion made a mental note to discuss with Flygon about the difference between cyclone and pit trap after the park run was complete, as no damage had been caused, and his intent partially ruined.

Vulpix, in an attempt to take advantage of the small lull between attacks, launched her own counterattack. A stream of stars, mostly harmless, materialized in front of Vulpix and hit the Flygon. But while minimal damage had been caused, it only served to enrage the dragon type. The pokemon’s teeth lashed out as soon as the barrage of celestial shapes had ceased, and Vulpix’s tail was anchored within Flygon’s jaws. Vulpix squealed in pain and protest as the teeth continued to dig in, preventing retaliation or escape.

Axion decided that it would be best to hopefully end the battle before things got any more heated. Grasping the park ball tightly, he tossed it directly at the fire type.

Seeing that Vulpix was effectively unable to get away, Axion lightly tossed a Parkball towards the two struggling Pokemon. The capture sphere tapped the fiery fox on the head, sucking in the creature. With his opponent out of reach, Flygon shook his head in annoyance and watched the Parkball rock about carefully.

<I don't see her putting up any more of a fight,> Aria remarked, shaking her head sadly. <That Flygon had a strong hold on her leg. She'll likely be limping in the rare chance she breaks free.>

Makina nodded in agreement, watching the Parkball as well. Flygon looked ready to pounce if any sign of the Fire-type's form reappeared- in Vulpix's weakened state, there was a chance he would outright knock out the wild Pokemon if there was no restraint. Thankfully, the sphere eventually stilled and left of a soft ping, announcing a successful capture.

Congratulations, that was a swift battle,” Makina said to Axion, retrieving the Parkball and pocketing the object in her bag. “I'll be holding onto this until the end of your Run, along with any other captures you make. Ready to head out, or do you need some time to decide which path you want to take?

The ball flew in the air and almost hung for the split second where its arc reached the apex, then flew down to touch the winded and gently tapped Vulpix - the red pokemon rapidly dematerialized, her from becoming data in the small camouflage ball. It landed on the ground as Flygon watched it intently, ready to strike if the capture attempt should fail. Thankfully, the ball ended its weak wiggling, and the glowing button faded to grey.

Axion felt the excitement of the capture lighten his mood as the ranger stooped to pick up the ball. “Congratulations, that was a swift battle,” Makina said to Axion, retrieving the Park Ball and pocketing the object in her bag. “I'll be holding onto this until the end of your Run, along with any other captures you make. Axion only took a moment to recall Flygon. “I have a feeling the right path would be my best bet, as it looks to go off into some caves.”

“I have a feeling the right path would be my best bet, as it looks to go off into some caves,” Axion replied, recalling the Flygon. Overall, this was a good call- while the Dragon-type could use the earth around it, its movement would be seriously impaired in an enclosed area.

Makina nodded, remembering Axion's remark about looking for Pokemon that could dig. “A lot of the caves around here are connected as well, so we could technically hold the entire Run within if that's the case,” she remarked. “Worst case scenario, it's a dead end and we can double back.”

The path, while a bit out of the way, was rather short. As they approached the cave entrance, most of what could be seen within was shrouded in darkness; after a moment's search, Makina managed to find two flashlights and offer one to Axion.

Before they could head further in to explore, one of the rocks lying outside the entrance began to stir. Once a set of eyes appeared on the object, however, it was pretty obvious that it was simply a half-hidden Pokemon.

Looks like we accidentally disturbed a Geodude,” Makina said, looking over at the Rock-type. “While common, they can hold their own in a fight. Were you interested in one?”

“A lot of the caves around here are connected as well, so we could technically hold the entire Run within if that's the case,” she remarked. “Worst case scenario, it's a dead end and we can double back.”

Both trainers, with the Gardevoir in tow as well, started down the narrow slightly twisting path, clouds of soot rising up with every footfall. It wasn't overly long before the gaping maw of the promised cave came into view around the corner, pitch black only meters inside. Makina took a moments break, two flashlights coming out of her backpack. Handing one of the silver cylinders to Axion, he took it and flipped it on, ready to enter the cave. As they stepped to within the threshold, one of the many rocks that had been dotting the entrance began to wiggle. Slowly yet purposefully, the rock almost morphed itself into the sleepy-eyed face of a geodude that blocked the path.

“Looks like we accidentally disturbed a Geodude,” Makina said, looking over at the Rock-type. “While common, they can hold their own in a fight. Were you interested in one?”

“I’ll pass” Axion replied. “Don’t need another rock type right now, so maybe we can just wiggle around and pass him by.”

Axion shook his head in reply. “Don’t need another Rock type right now, so maybe we can just wiggle around and pass him by.”

<He's after digging Pokemon, but does not want any Rock-types?> Aria wondered aloud, looking over at her partner. <He may be looking for a while, then.>

Not exactly, Makina replied to the Gardevoir, trying to decide the best possible way to pass the Geodude. Not all Ground Pokemon are Rock hybrids, and some Steel-types are excellent diggers as well. It may take a bit, but it is possible. Closing the link for the moment, the Ranger figured to play it safe and simply ignore the wild Pokemon for the moment. It had just woken up after all, maybe it would fall back asleep one it wasn't threatened.

Unfortunately, the Geodude lifted itself from the groun upon seeing that the group was about to pass it. After taking a moment to shake off a small amount of dirt that had been caked upon its rocky form, it moved to block the entrance.

Guess that was a no-go,” Makina said to Axion, “Want to try again, or prefer to fight your way through? You can also buy a Doll from me for $500 to distract it.”

Makina studied the situation for a moment in response to Axion's comment. The geodude was slowly moving itself about, attempting to clean itself off after the long nap in such a dirty, dusty location. Small grains of sand and ash fell off like light rain as it shook itself. After apparently deciding the optimum route to pursue, the ranger began to walk forwards, as if she had not even noticed the drowzy boulder. Unfortunately the plan did not go as well as had been expected. Axion had not even taken a step before the pokemon solidly moved himself in front of the ranger, blocking the path.

“Guess that was a no-go,” Makina said to Axion. “Want to try again, or prefer to fight your way through? You can also buy a Doll from me for $500 to distract it.”

Axion considered the fact for a moment before reaching into his pocket. An untold quantity of paper slips came out, from which the trainer removed 5 green ones, handing them over with an almost inaudible sigh. "Lets go with the doll option, I don't want to hurt the pokemon or cause my pokemon any unnecessary harm just because Mr. Rocky over there is eager for a little play time."

OOC: For future reference, you can state in the future that you wish to buy a Doll if the escape fails ahead of time.

Seeing that Geodude refused to leave them alone, Axion sighed and pulled out a wad of cash, handing $500 to the Ranger. “Lets go with the doll option, I don't want to hurt the Pokemon or cause my Pokemon any unnecessary harm just because Mr. Rocky over there is eager for a little play time.”

Makina silently accepted the money, trying not to grin at Axion's nickname for the wild Pokemon. Geodude, along with Zubat, were a major pain for hikers and those who traveled in the mountains often. She couldn't blame the Trainer for being annoyed that one was trying to block their path. Pocketing the cash, she fished out a small Pokedoll in the likeness of a Rhydon. Geodude, seeing the toy, immediately pounced on the object and moved out of the way.

The cave ceiling was rather low, topping at about six feet or so. While this hardly posed a problem for the humans and similarly-sized Gardevoir, this meant that larger Pokemon were likely hiding elsewhere or deeper within. For the moment, the light from their flashlights only revealed a largely open room with a few stalagmites littering the center of the room. Near one of these rocky protrusions, a tan Pokemon with a large metal head was currently staring them down.

That Shieldon looks interested in us. Care to approach it?” Makina asked Axion.

The Geodude, until now focused on the two humans, was suddenly mesmerized by the small doll that was pulled from Makina's backpack. It pounced upon the mass of stuffing and grey fabric, and the doll was quickly the same coloration of its dirt-encrusted owner. With the current roadblock out of the way, the party entered the cave itself, the flashlights causing small bright spots where the stone was smooth, or a miniature crystal formation poked out from the rock.

The room they entered a few meters from the entrance was wide, with a low domed ceiling. Stalagmites littered the center of the room. From behind one of these, a pokemon with an ovular grey head appeared, staring down at the intruders.

“That Shieldon looks interested in us. Care to approach it?” Makina asked Axion.

"Nope," he replied. "Already have a Bastiodon, so I'll have to pass. Hopefully this one will let us pass without a doll."
