“Nope," Axion replied, looking over at the Shieldon, "Already have a Bastiodon, so I'll have to pass. Hopefully this one will let us pass without a doll.”

Shieldon watched the group for a few moments, its eyes appearing to focus on Axion. After it saw that no one was going to head towards where it was resting, the prehistoric Pokemon gave a snort and turned its back. Either it didn't deem them worth the trouble of checking out, or the Steel-type was simply lazy. Either way, they were now free to explore the cave further without any worry of being attacked for the moment.

Despite initially showing promise, there wasn't much else to check out in the area; their search yielded no tunnels leading further in, and the small cave room looked nearly abandoned save for the Steel Pokemon they had already passed. Upon their last search about, however, the light from Axion's flashlight shined upon a oddly blue-hued rock. The object moved and turned to face them- or at least tried to, as this particular creature possessed no eyes.

Huh...yep, that's a Roggenrola,” Makina said, looking over at the faceless Rock-type. “If you have no interest in it, we should probably head back outside.”

Both the humans stood still, waiting for the steel type to disappear. After a few moments, it slowly turned around, apprently considering the two intruders as unworthy of its time. Axion felt relived as it did so, as his affection for the steel type would have forced him to capture the poor creature if it had not backed away. So as the shield pokemon finally sauntered off to some dark corner of the room, Axion and Makina began to search the cave.

All in all, it became a disappointing cave rather quickly. The room, while decent in size, offered few options in terms of exits; rather, the entrance itself was the only way to leave at all. The cave was large and round, but the walls were all smooth and solid. So Axion sadly resigned himself to anpother hike out in the heat. At least the cave had offered some relief in the cool damp darkness.

As the two had given up the search and were heading back towards the circle of light that marked the exterior of the cave, a blue stone caught the trainer's attention. It slowly rotated itself, more waddling then walking.

“Huh...yep, that's a Roggenrola,” Makina said, looking over at the faceless Rock-type. “If you have no interest in it, we should probably head back outside.”

"Pass. He's cute but wouldn't see much use on my team."

“Pass,” Axion replied, giving Roggenrola a cursory glance. “He's cute, but wouldn't see much use on my team.”

Despite having just been roused, Roggenrola didn't look interested in the group at all. Instead, it turned towards the cave entrance, waddling a few steps on its short rocky legs before going still. Combined with having no visual indication just what the Rock-type was doing, it was more than a little eerie.

Aria headed towards the wild Pokemon, her form barely making a sound as the Gardevoir practically glided over to Roggenrola. After conversing for a couple moments, she looked over at her partner confusedly. <It says there have been incoming bursts of...sound? There's something outside that has been causing them, and it's coming this way soon.>

Makina frowned as she puzzled over the Gardevoir's discovery, then relayed the info to Axion. “Aria says there's a creature outside that's been shooting off soundwaves. It could be a stray Whismur that somehow got lost, but it's probably something that travels using echolocation instead.”

The mystery was soon solved- the entrance to the cave was darkened a large figure approached and poked its head inside. Shining a light towards the creature, Makina was able to make out the front half of a violet-hued batlike Pokemon, its mouth wide open as it fired off another soundwave. The pitch was high enough to make the Ranger flinch, and Roggenrola quickly headed towards the back of the cave. After moving about, the newcomer realized one fatal error- it was too large to freely fly about in the enclosed area. Turning about-revealing a deadly scorpion tail as it did so- the Pokemon headed outside.

And that little bundle of horror was a Gliscor,” Makina finally remarked as the Ground-Flying hybrid left the cave. When she saw it crawl upwards though, she added, “It will probably try to ambush us if we leave here. Want to face it head-on, or try another method?”

The Roggenrola thankfully decided that it was more interested in what appeared to be the light from outside the cave. It waddled closer to the entrance, standing stone still for a moment. In response, Makina's Gardevoir floated closer, more appearing beside the blue stone than moving there. The two stood observing the light, moving not a muscle. Axion and Makina unintentionally did the same, waiting for whatever was occurring. After a minute of this, Roggenrola finally stirred and returned to the darkness of the cave. Perplexed, Makina managed to answer Axion's burning question.

“Aria says there's a creature outside that's been shooting off sound waves. It could be a stray Whismur that somehow got lost, but it's probably something that travels using echolocation instead.”

Axion strained for a minute, trying to hear any sound or pitch that would have given a hint of the mysterious being. His hearing, however, had been destroyed from working with steel types, who often had loud grating or screeching noises that accompanied their training regimens. Instead of sound, a threatening shadow materialized forming into a bat-like creature with a venomous tail. Axion recognized it, having one himself. A piercing shriek entered the cave, signifying Gliscor's primal rage and challenging the entities inside. Aria and Makina visibly winced, but the sound hardly phased the partly deaf trainer. Without a way to fit inside the cave, the poison pokemon hovered in front of the aperture before rising up to circle around the location.

“And that little bundle of horror was a Gliscor. It will probably try to ambush us if we leave here. Want to face it head-on, or try another method?”

Laughing at the thought of it, Axion again gave a negative head shake. "I have one, one of them is more than enough trouble. We'll probably have to find a way to sneak past it, or distract it. You're the ranger, so Ill let you decide which is better. I know I would rather not have a belly full of poison right now."

Despite their situation, Axion began to laugh before finally shaking his head in reply. “I have one, one of them is more than enough trouble. We'll probably have to find a way to sneak past it, or distract it.” After a moment, he added, “You're the Ranger, so I'll let you decide which is better. I know I would rather not have a belly full of poison right now.”

Think that would go for everyone!” Makina said, giving a grin. Gliscor, despite being Ground-type, had a venomous stinger and were able to use a variety of Poison moves, some even using the moves as a way to heal themselves. All in all, the species was not something to take lightly.

<It's still waiting out there,> Aria warned, her large red eyes focused on the entrance. <I don't think it's going to move until something exits this cave.>

Well, we have to do something, Makina relayed back to the Gardevoir. The only other way out was digging a tunnel; while she had Rezi on her team to help with that and Axion had Flygon, she doubted the other Rangers would like them carving a route in the landscape when they had no idea where to go. Finally, Makina sighed and edged towards the entrance, retrieving a Doll from her pack. “I'll go first. If Gliscor dives in, I'll toss this to it and we'll make a run for it,” she explained to Axion and Aria.

Thankfully, there was no need to use that plan. Just as Makina was about to head outside, the sound of multiple hounds barking in unison erupted in the distance. Shaken by the noise, the wild Gliscor unlatched itself from the top of the cave and glided away in irritation.

Finally free, the humans and Gardevoir stepped out into the sunlight- and were greeted to the sight of a small pack of fiery canines surrounding the area. There were about five in all- two Growlithe and three Houndour. Upon seeing the humans, all but one scattered away.

Either that's a brave one, or it's interested in us,” Makina said, noting the lone Houndour. “Care to see what it wants?”

“Think that would go for everyone!” Makina replied to the comment, her face both offering a humorous and painful look as her hand reached into her backpack. A moment of fishing brought forth another pokedoll, its plushness so inviting even to Axion. “I'll go first. If Gliscor dives in, I'll toss this to it and we'll make a run for it,” Makina said, warily stepping towards the gaping maw of the cave. Aria and Axion stood back and waited as the ranger’s body was poised, ready to make a run for the freedom and light. Instead, she faltered and nearly fell on her face when a number of new sounds quickly grew in volume from outside to startle her. In a case of severe luck, it also startled the Gliscor, who dislodged himself from above the aperture, angrily flying away with another piercing screech. Confused as to the sounds that had come from nowhere, the assembled party ventured warily into the reddish hued light that filtered down from the ashy sky.

Outside the cave, only a matter of meters away from where Geodude had been sleeping, a number of canine pokemon barked and yelped in a cacophony of rough sounds. Altogether the group of five consisted of three Houndour and two Growlithe. They ignored the trainer, ranger, and Gardevoir until a wayward step caused the ground to crackle, diverting the pokemon’s attention from their retreating target and onto Axion. The pups, still young for being out alone, all immediately became aware of the new threat, most running off to where Axion could only assume their parents were hunting. One lone Houndour remained however, standing defiantly at Axion in a challenge. Makina, noticing this, stated “Either that's a brave one, or it's interested in us. Care to see what it wants?”

“I do” Axion replied, reaching to his belt for a poke ball. “If he’s this interested in me, I’m willing to give him a chance. Besides, I have been around enough Houndour in my life to know that I like them.” Indeed, Axion’s neighbors had bred Houndour and their evolved forms every spring. he remembered playing with the puppies as a younger child, before he had been given Scyther for his birthday. Such fond memories were flooding back, further convincing him to attempt the capture. As his hand flew forth releasing the lightly weathered park ball that had been removed from its spot, the red corsucating energy materialized Machamp into sharp focus.

Machamp stretched, reveling in the freedom provided by the release from his containment. Looking around, his eyes focused on a distant mountain, what had once been his home: Mt. Oktori. A misty appearance glazed over his eyes, obviously remembering something of his home. “Machamp, you might want to look in front of you; we have a challenger” Axion said almost matter-of-factly. With focus snapping back to the present situation, the four armed muscle looked around, to see the small Houndour attempting to prove its courage against the enormous opponent. What could almost be taken to be a chuckle escaped from Machamp’s lips as he stared down the small canine.

“I want you to start off by Using Scary face, show your power to Houndour in full force.” Axion had never seen Machamp use the move in an actual battle, but enough training sessions with the powerhouse had given the trainer enough jitters alone; he figured on something small enough it might work even better. “Then concentrate on amplifying your power in the moment between terror and retaliation we’re sure to have by using focus energy, flex like crazy until you feel power bursting from you.” Machamp was already doing this, but Axion knew that more muscle workouts could not go overly wrong, and Machamp had been cooped up all day waiting for a chance to show off. “Finally I want you to use your stored up energy and release it into a Karate Chop, smack Houndour down. I don’t want to kill it off with one hit though, so make sure you aim and don’t hit the head. Go out there and show me what you have been training for these past few days.”

Axion, hoping Machamp could actually get up the rhythm required for the move set he had given the pokemon, began considering other options as well should the initial setup fail. he pulled out a small bag and just held onto it, in preparation of use should the need arise.

[[Note, for some reason I wrote bold on the signup, but Machamp's nature is Brave on my stats and the claim page.]]

“I do,” Axion replied, meeting the Houndour's stare. “If he’s this interested in me, I’m willing to give him a chance. Besides, I have been around enough Houndour in my life to know that I like them.”

<That may be why this one stayed behind,> Aria remarked, keeping her distance from the hound. As a Psychic-type, she didn't care to stay around Dark Pokemon for long. Because of this, Makina was usually forced to leave her old team at home while working in the Park. <Houndour tend to either stick with their own kind or kindred spirits.>

That or they caught a whiff of one on his clothes, Makina pointed out. Houndour were one of many Pokemon that could be bought as pets, though their extremely high asking price made them popular only among the upper class. Nowadays one could only buy them directly from a Breeder.

As Ranger and partner conversed, Axion had already sent out his Pokemon. A muscular humanoid creature with four arms was now visible on the field, his form slack as he stared off at a mountain in the distance. Though his current stance suggested that he wasn't paying attention, a wiser person would know otherwise- Machamp were well-known for their dedication and sheer power.

Machamp, you might want to look in front of you; we have a challenger,” Axion said, noticing his Pokemon's inattention. “I want you to start off by Using Scary Face, show your power to Houndour in full force. Then concentrate on amplifying your power in the moment between terror and retaliation we’re sure to have by using Focus Energy.”

As Axion went more into detail about their strategy, Machamp directed his attention to Houndour. The former prepped into a battle stance, smirking as he looked at the Fire-type. Houndour, in turn, let out a snarl at seeing its opponent.

Go out there, and show me what you have been training for these past few days,” Axion said, finishing up his speech.

Machamp immediately sprung into action, lunging forward and glaring at the wild Pokemon in a frightening manner. Surprised by its opponent's attack, Houndour whimpered and backed away, its form cringing as if afraid to move. In an attempt to scare off the large Pokemon, it let out a loud Howl. Upon seeing the Fire-type's fear, Machamp let out a chuckle; this battle would likely be over in to time.

Something changed in Houndour's demeanor when it saw Machamp's reaction. Though it still shook in fear, a determination gleamed in the hound's eyes, and they almost seemed to shine as it stared carefully at the Fighting-type. The reason for this was soon made clear- as soon as Machamp began clearing his mind for his second technique, Houndour mimicked it perfectly, calming the pup and becoming more confident in its attacks. Seeing that his technique was being copied, Machamp let out a cry of outrage, the move forgotten.

Never underestimate a Dark Pokemon,” Makina said, mostly to herself as she watched the two battler's techniques. “They're most dangerous when taken lightly or cornered.”

Striking mostly in anger, Machamp swung one of his arms towards the wild Pokemon in a judo chop. The attack struck home, hitting Houndour's midsection and dealing a decent amount of damage. This battle was far from over though; in retaliation, the fiery hound whirled about and sunk its fangs into the offending limb, setting its mouth aflame as it did so. While Machamp was eventually about to shake free the pup and back up, he watched the wild Pokemon in a more wary manner.

As Machamp lurched forward with almost superhuman speed, his face and action made Houndour shrink back and whimper in surprise. Axion was surprised at how scared Houndour reacted, expecting a slightly more defiant response. The fear and defiance eventually came out as a wailing Howl, which elicited a chuckle from the superpower pokemon; apparently Machamp found the response somewhat lacking in his general ferocity.

Houndour must have felt that Machamp wasn't taking it seriously, as its general stance changed to a more aggressive posture. he began watching Machamp;s every movement. Even though he still showed some sense of fear and shook almost imperceptibly, he managed to show strength in his actions. Machamp was almost ignoring the dark-type canine, instead preparing himself for the focus he would need for focus energy. His four hands paired up, meeting in dual prayer-like positions. As he cleared his mind, Houndour did the best to match the position despite his lack of hands. He somewhat sat down, his paws joining up in order to focus himself as if in mockery of Machamp. It worked far better than Axion expected, as through not quite closed eyes Machamp saw the mockery, and he lost focus as he roared in protest at the cheap trick. However Houndour ignored it, and looked refreshed and ready for more action as he returned to his feet.

Axion stood watching with the slightest hint of concern, not catching what Makina quietly said close to Aria. He was focused on seeing how Machamp reacted, his temper already flaring up. He acted on this apparent rage, striking out at the pokemon in a vicious karate chop. The hand, almost as hard as diamond, smashed into the small body of the dog pokemon’s main body, creating obvious damage and forcing a tiny squeal and wince from Houndour. Using the focus he had stolen from the muscle-covered being, Houndour retaliated fiercely. The arm that had so recently bashed it found two rows of fangs sunk deep into the muscles, and a gout of fire spread along the wound to further injure Machamp. It took a moment for Machamp to dislodge the pokemon, his arm waving wildly as he did so. When Houndour finally let go, he flew in a gentle arc to land on his feet a meter or so away. Machamp, nursing his blackened wound, watched his adversary with more caution now.

Axion stood back, considering his options at the moment. This Houndour was strong, and he felt that it would truly test Machamp’s almost nonexistent wit to the max. He felt that he would probably have to utilize Machamp’s emotional state to further attacks, as craftiness was unlikely to work at this point. “Machamp, only one thing I want you to do this round. I want you to use submission. Hold Houndour down long enough for me to use a status bomb on him. If you can get his limbs stretched out, even better. I just want him immobilized for the next few seconds. Axion reached into his bag and picked up a yellow ball that had similarities to the poke balls on the back of his belt, but instead it was yellow, had an electric bolt symbol in place of the normal button, and was ridged almost like a grenade. Palming it and returning the rest to his bag, he watched carefully and prepared to launch it at the Houndour.

Axion watched the two battlers assessing the situation. After a moment, he called out his next command. “Machamp, only one thing I want you to do this round. I want you to use Submission. Hold Houndour down long enough for me to use a status bomb on him.” As he went through his pack, he added, “If you can get his limbs stretched out, even better. I just want him immobilized for the next few seconds.”

<Wait, is he using weapons here?> Aria said, her eyes widening in alarm. <You are not going to stop him?>

Give him a moment, Makina said, waving off the Gardevoir but keeping her eyes on Axion. There were some items that could be used on Pokemon in an offensive manner and were approved by Park staff, but they were rarely seen. This was so Trainers couldn't over-abuse the items and take down every single Pokemon without a fair fight. Once the Ranger saw Axion fish out a yellow Paralysis bomb, she relaxed. Slightly. He's fine. Can't say I care for status bombs, though. Still, it was legal.

Machamp barreled towards Houndour, all four arms outstretched as he charged. Shocked by the Fighting-type's sudden movement, the hound barely had time to move before it was knocked down to the ground by his opponent. The two Pokemon rolled about, Machamp trying to restrain his target with Houndour trying to break free and back away. Seeing that he would be unable to escape by speed alone, the wild Pokemon let loose a stream of flames at Machamp. Yelping in pain, the humanoid Pokemon released the hold on his opponent.

Fortunately for Axion, by this time he had a clear shot at Houndour. The Trainer lobbed the Paralysis Bomb at the Pokemon's feet, and brilliant blue sparks began to shoot from the object. The electrical surge encompassed Houndour, his limbs shaking from paralysis.

Even though Houndour was paralyzed, he was also free from Machamp's grasp at the moment. Eyes blazing in anger, the fiery hound coughed out a noxious-looking cloud towards the Fighting-type.

The grooves on the ball made small marks on Axion’s hand as he gripped it tightly, watching Machamp fiercely race towards Houndour, catching it off guard. His arms stretched forward like four lighting bolts, and in unison they knocked the fire type pokemon down to the ground. Taking advantage of his prone opponent, Machamp fell to the ground and grappled with the far smaller pokemon. The two combatants rolled about, struggling for dominance over the other. As Machamp finally managed to gain a moment of superiority, Houndour, his face towards Machamp, made a desperate move. A tongue of flame rolled at the stron pokemon’s nearby face. THe flames burned and forced Machamp to lose concentration, and Houndour began slipping away.

This was when Axion took his chance. THe yellow sphere flew from his grip, landing underneath the black dog. In a small shower of blue sparks, Houndour fell over in his escape attempt, twitching as he was enveloped by the energy. Paralyzed, he slowly forced himself up and away from Machamp. He released a cloud of dark thick clouds from his pain-ridden mouth in protest towards Machamp.

Axion, concerned about the mysterious smoke, took action avoid further harm to his pokemon. “Machamp, keep a wide berth from that smoke if possible, let Houndour come to you. When he comes and gets you use revenge by forcing him into the ground again, the less he’s able to get away the better. You just need to stay away from the noxious fumes while doing it.”

Axion eyed the noxious cloud disdainfully- it was clear that while he had no idea what it was, he know it meant bad news for his Pokemon. “Machamp, keep a wide berth from that smoke if possible; let Houndour come to you. When he comes and gets you, use Revenge by forcing him into the ground again. The less he’s able to get away, the better.”

Makina raised an eyebrow at Axion's command, starting to notice a trend in the Trainer's choice of moves. She was no master strategist, but it didn't take a genius to see that Axion was a fan of direct attacks. That, along with the desire to grapple opponents, could spell trouble down the line.

Houndour's eyes narrowed in suspicion as he saw Machamp ready for an attack, yet not move forward into an assault. The Smog cloud drifted closer towards the Fighting-type, and an ominous feeling hung in the air as neither combatant deigned to move.

As the toxic cloud neared Machamp, Aria's eyes lit up in realization. <So that's what he's trying to do->

What do you mean- shit! Makina flinched as a powerful burst of fire billowed from Houndour's now-open mouth, the attack heading towards the Smog. “Look out!”

The Smog exploded upon contact from the flames, searing Machamp and causing the Pokemon to roar in both anger and pain. As the fire died down, Axoin's Pokemon sprung forth and bull-rushed Houndour, dealing serious damage to the hound. Machamp wasn't doing a great deal better, though- his muscular form had scorch marks and the Pokemon was breathing a little harder than normal.

Poison attacks are highly explosive,” Makina advised to Axion. “That technique isn't used often, but when it is...well, we just saw the results. You might want to avoid such an attempt in the future.”

Machamp, while more prone to attacking directly, stood his ground ,waiting for his adversary to make the first move. Axion was almost surprised he was able to stand still, moving not a muscle in an attempt to lure Houndour in. There was almost complete silence as the noxious cloud gently wafted around the battlefield, moving closer to Machamp ever so slowly. The trainer had a feeling that Houndour was waiting for something, but he had little idea as to what.

After a virtual eternity, the canine’s eyes lit up. Immediately following was the mouth, which again shot a jet of fire directly through the black fumes. Before any reaction was possible from the humans or muscle-covered behemoth, the cloud exploded, coating Machamp in a number of liquid flames. However, he ignored such trivial pains as his lower fits sprang to action, aiming and smashing into Houndour with a one-two double smack that looked to cause damage in retaliation for his now burnt and slowly crisping pale grey skin.

“Poison attacks are highly explosive,” Makina advised to Axion. “That technique isn't used often, but when it is...well, we just saw the results. You might want to avoid such an attempt in the future.”

Axion, still taken aback by the exchange, merely nodded. His hand felt around for his pocket, and finally left the cloth container with another park ball, like he had used earlier on Vulpix. Expanding it in his hand. he didn’t have the words to call it out as it flew towards the injured Houndor. He hoped it would work, as he doubted Machamp was in good enough shape to drag this battle on for too much longer.

Axion nodded in reply, saying nothing as he watched the aftereffects of the explosion. He apparently wished to end this battle as soon as possible though, for soon after the Trainer had fished out a Parkball from his pocket and readied to take aim at the wild Houndour.

As the Ball soared towards Houndour, Makina compared the health between the two battlers before the capture device sucked in the Fire-type. Both Pokemon had taken some serious hits as well as dealt them, but Houndour still looked stubborn enough to keep fighting. From the way the sphere moved about, it seemed almost certain that the pup would break free and strike back- fortunately for everyone, the Parkball eventually stilled and let off a soft ping.

Guess Houndour was more tired than it looked,” Makina said, picking up the sphere and placing it in her back next to Vulpix's. Once done, she looked back over at Axion. “Want to keep going, or want to call it a day? I'm willing to escort you despite what choice you make, but it doesn't seem like we're having the best luck here.”

xion watched, every muscle tensed, as the ball shook violently with Houndour's last throes of battle. The ball finally silenced itself, the small button fading to dull grey and Axion's body losing tension as quickly as a spring, to the point he almost fell over in relief. As Makina pocketed the now full poke ball, Axion called out to Machamp. "Good work Machamp, take a rest." Within seconds, Machamp was returning to his own ball, which was then secured on Axion's belt.

“Guess Houndour was more tired than it looked,” Makina said. “Want to keep going, or want to call it a day? I'm willing to escort you despite what choice you make, but it doesn't seem like we're having the best luck here.”

Axion considered both options for a moment. "I think Flygon has at least one more fight left in him, so I'm more than willing to see what else we can find. Still hoping that something I'm looking for might pop its head out."

Axion recalled his Machamp, the battered humanoid Pokemon transforming into a red beam of light before it swirled back into its Pokeball. “I think Flygon has at least one more fight left in him, so I'm more than willing to see what else we can find,” he replied. “Still hoping that something I'm looking for might pop its head out.”

Fair enough,” Makina said, looking towards the path. Since their venture to the cave yielded no results, the only way to continue now was towards the volcano. While that meant they would run into yet more Fire Pokemon, it also meant that it was possible Axion's luck would change.

As they headed ever closer to their destination, the rocky path grew steeper. While it was a far cry from being a sheer slope, it was becoming noticeable harder to walk forward and fight against gravity. On one of the larger stones off to the side, a small humanoid Pokemon watched their trek. Its red body carried the same hue as flames, and it was apparently content to sit and watch them hike for the moment.

Magby over there, if you're interested,” Makina noted to Axion, nodding her head over to the Pokemon. “If not we should probably move on.”

“Fair enough,” Makina said, her face moving from the trainer to the path ahead. Axion read the glance and understood - it was now upward, towards the peak of the great volcanic mountain. While Axion wasn't necessarily desiring any more fire types, he paid for the excursion, and he was more than willing to go all the way with it.

Axion and Makina began traversing the sloping path, breathing harder as their ascent continued. The angle of the mountain was slowly changing, and Axion was starting to feel the exertions in his already tired legs. His attention on his legs was broken when a rock that had before been sitting peacefully o n the side of the route fell, revealing a small red pokemon that was almost reminiscent of a duck. At least if the duck was on fire and blood red.

“Magby over there, if you're interested,” Makina noted to Axion, nodding her head over to the Pokemon. “If not we should probably move on.”

"pass" Axion replied, all to aware of how energetic baby pokemon could be.

“Pass,” Axion replied, barely glancing at the baby Pokemon. Apparently the strenuous uphill trek was getting to him too, judging from the Trainer's short response.

Fortunately, Magby seemed content in letting the group pass by. After watching them for a couple moments more, the Fire-type rolled over on its side and closed its eyes. In no time at all it was fast asleep.

<This hike always takes far too long,> Aria grouched over the link, walking behind the two humans. As a Psychic Pokemon, she was far more used to exercising her mental strength rather than physical. <I could always Teleport us right at the foot of the volcano, you know.>

Tempting as it is, we may as well hoof it, Makina replied, keeping her eye on the road ahead. We may run into something else along the way, so no point.

Eventually the sloping trail evened out, much to everyone's relief. In addition, Mount Deckbi was now in full sight- the entrance to the main cave was up ahead, with the interior lightly illuminated by something lying within. There was one issue though; even though they were near the center of the area, there wasn't a Pokemon to be found.

Just where did the locals go?” Makina remarked to herself, looking about in confusion. Due to being such a hotspot (bad pun or not,) there was usually at least a few Pokemon basking in the sun or lurking about right at the entrance, debating on whether or not to enter. Just when the Ranger was about to ask Aria to do a scan around the area, a small bipedal Pokemon poked its head out from the cave entrance. Its body was green and scaly in appearance, with two small tusks jutting out of its mouth.

Well, there's an Axew at least,” Makina said to Axion. “Did you care for one?”

As the party stood perfectly still, the flaming humanoid duck slowly lost its focus on them, its head drooping down slowly. As the moments passed, it finally turned away, finding a comfortable looking spot amongst the soot and ash encompassing the location. Its head nearly fell to the ground as its body shut down, the baby pokemon falling into a deep sleep instantly. The three party members were finally able to relax, Axion breathing heavily after almost holding his breath for the past minute.

They then continued hiking up the trail, the angle of ascent causing minor aches and pains to travel up Axion’s back as he followed behind Makina and Aria. As none were currently talking out loud, the only sounds that came across the trail were the rumbles of the eternally active volcano, and the warm winds that swirled around from the heat vents that dotted the mountainous stone landscape. Axion noted a stark lack of defining features to discern direction or location, so much that he felt he would be lost without the path. He attempted to stay well aware of the landmarks that appeared few and far between in the hot and slowly more arid area.

After an incalculable period of time, as Axion had no watch and couldn’t see much sunlight through the ever thickening ash clouds, the path began to let up on the weary three, the slope becoming much more manageable. Axion was able to stand up straight, giving his back a moment to stretch. As far as he could tell, it had been quite some time since Magby had shown its face, and no other pokemon had really come out from the endless ridges of stone and dust. They had ended up at the entrance to a far larger cave, seemingly the intentional continuation of the path. A large flat area surrounded it, also bereft of any notable signs of life. On the ground Axion saw the occasional footprint left in the thick ash, but it was worn down, likely hours old.

Standing just slightly ahead, Makina mumbled something to herself, the wind snatching it before any comprehensible syllables came near the trainer’s ear. Axion was looking away when the ranger made a sound of surprise and said “Well, there's an Axew at least. Did you care for one?”

With a bit of surprise himself at the first loud noise he had heard in a while, he turned around. Peeking out from the red, glowing cave entrance was a small green bipedal pokemon. The scales were a faded shade of olive, with a far darker hue covering the back, including the overly large head spike that added additional inches to the overall height of the pokemon. From inside its mouth sprouted two odd horn, tanned ivory and blunt yet still looking potentially dangerous. Axion had never actually seen a live Axew, but he had heard of their prowess upon evolution. “Well, since we haven’t seen much else of interest today, I think I’ll go for Axew. Dragon types are always good.” Reaching around for a moment, a shrieking pain erupted through his back, and he had to wait a moment before he could finally grasp the poke ball he was looking for. “Flygon, lets show this Axew what we can do. We’re going to try and be more conservative this time, as you’re already hurting.” He knew dragons could damage each other more than other types, so he wanted to keep Flygon at a distance when possible.

“I want you to start by making it more difficult for Axew to move around, since you have the advantage of flying. Use Earth Power to make the area nice and uneven. If he can’t use speed to get at you we should have a better chance of winning. Then, after the ground has a nice jagged quality to it, I want you to get some distance in the air and keep away from any physical attacks he might throw at you. Then use sonicboom. We need to gauge Axew’s relative strength and power, and I think something like this should do it. Now get out there, and try to have some fun.” Axion, making sure he was well away from the targeted area of earth, knelt down to rest as he waited to see how well the latest strategy worked out.

    OOC: Axew gender?

    *~~~~~~~~~*

After some looking about, Axion's eyes finally locked on to Axew. Instead of waving off the Pokemon like the others though, he expressed interest in this one. “Well, since we haven’t seen much else of interest today, I think I’ll go for Axew. Dragon types are always good.”

<Right, then. Should I Teleport us back to the front gate, or should we-> Aria stopped mid-statement, finally realizing that Axion had wished to battle after all. <Wait, we're staying after all?>

Looks like it, Makina replied. Axew were powerful, but they carried a hefty pricetag. Either Axion preferred capturing all of his Pokemon rather than purchasing, or he was low on funds. Relax, Aria. It's not like we'll be walking anymore for the time being.

Axion reached back to his pack, flinching in pain as his back muscles protested the movement. Eventually though, he fished out a Pokeball and called out one of his teammates. “Flygon, lets show this Axew what we can do. We’re going to try and be more conservative this time, as you’re already hurting.”

As Flygon's form fully materialized, Makina wondered just how this battle would go. The Dragon-type was already at less than full strength thanks to fighting Vulpix earlier, and would be at a type disadvantage. On the other hand, Axew would be in the same boat, and was still unevolved. The outcome would likely decide on how Axion commanded his Pokemon, and Flygon's temperament as well.

I want you to start by making it more difficult for Axew to move around, since you have the advantage of flying. Use Earth Power to make the area nice and uneven. If he can’t use speed to get at you we should have a better chance of winning. Then, after the ground has a nice jagged quality to it, I want you to get some distance in the air and keep away from any physical attacks he might throw at you,” Axion called out to his teammate. “Then use SonicBoom. We need to gauge Axew’s relative strength and power, and I think something like this should do it.”

Flygon's eyes locked on the half-hidden Axew, assessing his opponent. The wild Dragon-type did the same, walking fully outside and meeting its opponent's look with a determined glare. Seeing the action, Flygon gave a snort and launched himself upwards with a single strong stroke of his wings. As he took off, the Mystic Pokemon slammed the ground with his tail, creating a shockwave and making small cracks in the ground. Axew wobbled about shakedly, but managed to stay on its feet. It sharpened its claws on the rocky wall behind it, honing them to deal more damage.

Seeing that its target was now airborne, Axew took a deep breath and blew a stream of violet flames at Flygon, causing the flying dragon to shriek in pain. Still, Flygon managed to stay aloft and fire his next attack, letting out a screech of harmful soundwaves towards Axew. Both combatants weathered their respective attacks well, ready for more.

Axew followed Flygon's flight path for a couple moments, as if it was at a loss on what to do next. Eventually, it let out a string of insults towards Axion's opponent, attempting to goad him into fighting at close range and stop attacking like a coward. Tail twitching in anger, Flygon began to lower towards the ground; if Axion didn't act quickly, he could possibly lose the upper hand.

    [[Male please]]

Flygon and Axew stared at each other, neither moving. The tension was palpable as the two dragons glared at each other, preparing to strike at the opportune moment. Dust clouds fluttered around as Flygons wings and Axew,s small feet gave imperceptible movements as the terrain was shifted to gain the minute advantage needed to win. Without any visible provocation, Flygon made the first move, his patience and temper obviously the shorter of the two pokemon’s. The subterranean dragon type’s power became apparent, as with a single lurch of powerful wind from his trapezoidal wings his stocky form rapidly rose from the ashy ground into the equally ash filled air above the battlefield. His tail, which normally hung fairly limply below his solid form, became stiff as a board as he flew upward, the tip snapping the ground during the ascent. The force of impact created a minor quake in the local area, the earth becoming cracked and uneven. Axew, small as he was, remained standing despite some initial wobbling. As Flygon gained a respectable distance between him and his opponent, Axew took the open moment to scratch against the reddish stone behind him, creating sparks and making his small claws look far more dangerous than before.

Axew found his opponent when his attack boosting maneuver was completed. A small sneer crossed the dragon’s face as he saw his opponent safely out of reach. Flygon answered the sneer with something approximating a smil, Flygon’s overconfidence in itself all too apparent to Axion. He would have to work with Flygon more, and better learn how the pokemon thought. So far he had been somewhat surprised at its attitude in general. The trainers thoughts were interrupted as Axew ran towards the flying pokemon, breathing in as he did so. As the small green pokemon was almost directly below his flying adversary, Axew released the inhaled breath, a continuous stream of deep violet flames was released at Flygon, wreathing the mystic flyer in pure dragon-type energy. A deep shriek of pain erupted from Flygon’s mouth, causing Axion to wince as he felt the pure damage caused as if he himself had been hit with the flames.

Flygon, managing to keep himself aloft despite the apparent pain it was now causing, retaliated to the attack with his own ranged onslaught. A far higher pitched series of harmful sound waves reverberated through the air, hitting Axew directly and causing the smaller dragon to cover his ears in protest of the soundwaves. But as the piercing noise fainted, Axew stood his ground, as if ready to take on the flying dragon more directly. However, his indecision made him somewhat dance around, unsure as to how best force his opponent to attack him. The small hops became larger, and Axew finally began making derisive sounds in Flygon’s direction. Although Axion was not exactly sure of Axew,s intent, his steel-lated pokedex gave him a hint of information as he removed it from its secure location in a side pocket. The attacks listed were short, but Axion saw “Taunt” listed among the other more damaging moves. He figured Axion had learned Flygon was more prone to offense than defense and was playing towards this. Therefore, he would have to now play into Axews, and surprisingly Flygons, hand.

Flygon was already reacting to the harsh words as Axion’s mind raced for a viable strategy. Finally choosing a suitable first attack for a combo chain, his voice cried out to the descending Flygon. “Alright bud, new plan! Use feint attack to get in behind Axew, and smack him up against the rock wall over there with your wings.” He was still coming up with a strategy as his commands were coming, so he was desperately looking around for some advantage he could utilize when the cliff face came into more focus. “Next, use rocks slide on that wall to bring down some of those loose boulders above the cave mouth and hopefully knock the wits out of that little green menace. Then, use dragon breath like he did. A nice long shot of flames, and while you’re exhaling the attack use the purplace barrage to safely retreat into the air again. If you keep your distance, maybe he’ll tire out faster, as he doesn’t have the range you do.”
