Ranger Jake​

I sat at the desk of the ranger outpost impatiently. I looked once again at the trainer's file with boredom. Once again Hugo was bringing a trainer late to the island.

I sighed and deciding there was no use sitting inside waiting on a beautiful day like this, walked outside, tossing the trainers file back on my desk as I got up. I walked out the door and looked over at the dock to my right. Still no sign of Hugo on the long plank of wood extending about 100 meters out on to the water.

I was just about to sit down when I heard a low buzz and looked back towards the dock. Off into the distance, a small white dot was getting bigger and louder. I smiled and rolled my eyes. Even though I was kinda annoyed, I was also excited to get out into the woods with a trainer.

Soon the trainer and Hugo arrived on the ranger speed boat. I walked out onto the dock to greet them.

"Hi. I'm Jake and I'll lead you through the forest," I said smiling warmly and extending a hand.

Ethan was small built and looked kinda shy. He calmly took my hand and greeted me. I turned to Hugo and said quietly,

"A little late Hugo." He blushed and followed us as we walked back towards the Ranger station.

Ethan was staring in awe at the towering green trees that lay before us. The forest near the Station was what's called a cloud forest. It's the same thing as a rain forest only much taller. The trees stood a gargantuan 50 feet above us.

As Ethan marveled, I explained thiss and he looked determined as ever to get into the forest.

"Ok, there are 2 main ways into the forest," I said pointing,"The Night trail and the Day trail. Night is dark and Pokemon dwell there more often than the Day which is light and you can see better for batttle but less Pokemon appear there.

"Where would you like to go?"

I had read about the National Park several times before, and I was amazed at it. When I had the opportunity, I brought the first ticket I could to an area called “The Woods.” A sleak white boat picked me up a few days later, and soon I was on my way, speeding towards the park.

As we got closer, I stood on the deck, trying to see if I could see any Pokemon, areas, or other trainers making their own journeys.

Than, up ahead, I saw the woods: tall green trees, making a thick corridor of them, and all of them behind a small building.

“Nearly there.” A voice on the intercom said. I danced about in happiness, and clutched Evelyn and Starlight’s PokeBalls.

“Nearly there guys.” I whispered. Then, we reached the jetty, and a man called Hugo put out a gangplank, which I eagerly ran across. My ranger was waiting, but I didn’t want to come across as weird. He introduced himself as Jake.

“Hey, I’m Ethan, but you can call me Ace, if you want.” I replied nervously, and shook his hand. Jake walked forwards, and explained how the forest was a cloud forest.

“Wow, those trees really are huge, and I thought I was tall!” I laughed. Than, Jake asked me where I wanted to go: the Night or Day trail.

“Hmmm… I think I’ll take on the Night trail.” I replied. Evelyn’s heat could guide my way, and Starlight was very brave.

“Evelyn, come on out!” I cried, and pressed a button on my PokeBall. With a flash of light, my first Pokemon, a Flareon called Evelyn, formed.

“Flare!” She said, and licked her lips happily, and the two of us stared eagerly at Jake.

 

Ranger Jake​

"Hmmm... I think I'll take on the Night Trail" He said staring determinedly at the darker path.

I rolled my eyes so that he couldn't see. Trainers always took on the Night Trail. Although more powerful Pokemon dwelled there, it was extremely dangerous.

"Evelyn, come on out!" With a burst of light and a splatter of stars, a catlike Pokemon with brilliant Red and Orange fur emerged. Evelyn the Flareon gave off distinct calming vibes. Her warm fur and together emotions made me feel a bit better about taking this trainer into the Night Trail.

"Okay. Let's go," and as we set off towards the right of the forest, I instinctually grabbed a Pokeball on my belt and tapped it twice. A flare of red light spilled out of the Poke balls crack and materialized into a Luxray. Star purred softly as she walked along with us.

"This is Star," I said gesturing as we walked, "Her vision is better than most so she'll help me guide us safely through the forest."

Ethan considered the powerful Pokemon for a few seconds and then set his eyes determinedly back on the trailhead.

WE set into the trail and almost immediately the light vanished. I blinked a few times and got used to it quickly; I had been throught this trail many times before and was used to the quick change from light to darkness.

Ethan was having a bit more trouble but after a few moments of blindness he was okay.

"WROOOOOAR!!" A huge roar echoed through the forest and resonated off tree trunks. I froze. Crap.

"Star," I said warningly. Star was scanning the foliage with hard eyes. Surprisingly, she closed her eyes as if to listen. After a few tense moments she opened her eyes with a panicked look.

"Raaay!" She cried. If this was too strong for Star, we'd need back up. I reached to my belt and tapped another Pokeball. Instantly, a translucent purple Pokemon appeared in front of us. Luna, my Gengar, Grinned evilly and dissapeared, invisible to all of us.

A crash rang out to our left and a tree fell over, partially blocking the path. A huge ape-like Pokemon sauntered lazily over to the center of the trail and plopped down on its butt, staring at us. It yawned, revealing a huge set of grape-sized teeth.

"Well," I said after a few moments, "welcome to the National Park. If you want to take a Slaking in as a team member, nw's the time to try."

I waited as Ethan stared at the huge pokemon and decided.

I was excited to the be going down the Night Trail, but I noticed that Jake didn’t look too happy. I would have been willing to change, but I didn’t want to upset the ranger.

“Come on Evelyn, let’s go!” I said, and we followed Jake as he led us in. Evelyn smiled, and stayed by my side, though I could see her staring over at Star.

As we entered, the change from light to dark was dramatic: I couldn’t see the brown or green of the trees, and the path had become invisible.

“Flareon.” Evelyn said, and she made a ball of Ember in her mouth, letting me see a bit. But before I could reply, there was an angry roar. Suddenly, a Slaking appeared in front of me!

“Eeep!” I squealed. “Jake, can we run away, please?”

 

Ranger Jake​

"Uh, Jake, can we run away, please?" Ethan said.

I laughed. What, was he incapable of running away himself? It was a Pokemon, not a dragon. I looked at Star and said,

"Let's go."

Star looked warily at the Slaking and then let out a surprising Roar.

"ROOAR!" As the pulse of sound reached Slaking, its eyes widened slightly and it lumbered off the trail into the forest.

We continued into the forest walking along the trail and it began to get thinner adn the forest thicker. The rainforest was turning into an old growth forest. This part of the forest housed Bug Pokemon better than others.

I glanced up into a pine tree and saw two large white eyes staring back at me. I rubbed my eyes and looked back. The eyes were still there. I then realized that it was a Pokemon.

"Pineco up for grabs," I said pausing and gesturing lazily up at the large, dark green Pokemon.

I was feelign a bit awkward, as Jake seemed to be mocking me a bit.

"I figured I'd ask your permission first..." I mumbled. Star let out a sudden roar, making Evelyn jump, and the Slaking ran off.

We walked further into the forest, and Evelyn began to get a bit tired.

"If we don't catch the next Pokemon, you can come back in the ball." I whispered. I heard Jake call, and I looked up, seeing a Pineco staring down at us.

"No thanks, I actually have a friend, Seraphina, and I am getting a Pineco from her." I explained. "Sorry Pineco!" I called up.

 

Ranger Jake​

The Pineco blinked once and then jumped back further into the foilage. We continued along the trail and I began wondering if he wanted to catch any Pokemon at all.

There was a light up ahead and I realized that it must be a clearing. We soon walked out into the clearing and I looked to my right to see a sharp drop off into a dark pit. We were veering too close to Meteor Valley.

"Let's take this trail, "I said leading Ethan to a secondary path that veered off to the left. We walked along this path for a while as the canopy opened up a bit letting in some light. I heard a light distant humming in the distance and smiled. I knew what pokemon was coming up.

Suddenly, as we turned a corner, the path opened up into a bright field revealing a Wigglytuff sitting on a stump singing to itself. We approached it and I said,

"This is the Singing Rock. Jigglypuff's and Kricketot's evolutions like to come here to sing."

The Wigglytuff opened its eyes and looked horrified. Blushing it tried to hide behind the stump apperantly embarassed. I laughed and said,

"I guess you could practice fighting this Wigglytuff, but you wouldn't be able to catch it."

I followed after Jake, but as I did, I pulled a PokeBall out.

"Here you go Evelyn, have a rest." I said. Evelyn smiled thankfully, and turned into red energy adn was sucked away. "Starlight, you can have a turn!" And with another flash of light, my beautiful and strong Staraptor formed, hovering above me. "Hey there, we are in these woods. Follow me!" And we went after Jake.

We approached a clearing, and I saw a deep pit leading down. With a gulp, I chased after Jake to the left, with Starlight flapping above me. There was a strange humming sound, and Starlight looked a bit sleepy.

"Oh cool, a Wigglytuff!" I cried, and wanted to battle it, but it looked scared. I turned to Jake, looking a bit sad.
"I don't want to battle it while it's scared. I wish there was a nice basic Pokemon we could catch!"

"Yeah, I know," i said dismally and looked back at the Wigglytuff only to see it running off into the forest.

"So we have a few ways to go from the field. Where do you want to go?" I gestured at the three paths place in front of us. Star glared at them suspiciously.

I waved goodbye to the Wigglytuff, and stared at the light field a bit. Starlight had woken up fully now, and was staring down at Jake's Star, anxious to be around an electric type.

"This is a really beautiful place!" I said in admiration, and enjoyed being bathed in the light. But I heard Jake's voice, and I came back down to earth.

"Which path? Hmmm...." I pondered for a bit, and looked around. I couldn't tell what they would be like, but I was interested.

"I'll go with the left one first, as I am left handed!"

 

Ranger Jake​

When he chose the left path Star looked up at me and raised her eyebrow. I shrugged and decided that I could stop whatever was in this forest with my Pokemon.

We walked down the trail. This trail was wide and spacious. Almost 15 feet across, it seemed like a road for cars. It curved slightly to the left. The sides were filled with beautiful flowers. suddenly i spotted a Pokemon standing near the flowers and admiring them.

"I guess you'll want to pass a Nidoqueen up..."

My jaw dropped i shock: once again, a rare Pokemon had shown up, and I was unable to catch it!

"This really isn't going well!" I chuckled, though it wasn't very funny. "Let's just keep marching on then!"

 

Ranger Jake​

Ethan seemed a bit upset. We skirted past the Nidoqueen while she was distracted on some large blue flowers and continued on the road.

The road got wider and wider and the trees and foliage got more extravagant. We continued marvelling at this beautiful landscape.

Star had to growl to bring us back to the present to call to our notice a large purple Pokemon, not unlike the one we had just seen, holding flowers. It seemed as if the Nidoqueen's partner was bringing more flowers to her while she waited.

"I suppose not this one either."

I let out a wail of despair.

"Why isn't this working out?" I whimpered. Starlight flew down and gave me a reassuring hug. "At least there are ten encounters left!"

 

Ranger Jake​

Ethan let out a wail, but I quickly shushed him and Star growled.

"Well then be quiet, do you know how powerful these things are? We need to be careful if we're gonna bmake it outta here."

I dragged him to the opposite sside of the road and we hid in some bushes until the Pokemon had passed.

I sighed and we continued along the road. It became a bit thinner as the scrub reached out across the edges of the road, snagging shirts and slapping bare skin. I noticed some curious small holes in the ground. Reflexively I thought 'Dunsparce' but, they aren't found in this area.

My guessing was halted by a small tittering sound by our feet. I looked down to see a Nincada staring up at us with eeerie eyes. It peered out from one of the holes in the pit.

"Well you can catch this one with a Super Ball. You wanna go for it? Both your Pokemon have a type advantage."

I calmed down a bit, and looked over eagerly at the Nincada.

"I have always wanted one of these, they look so cool, and then I can get two Pokemon!" I cried, and looked eagerly at Nincada, who looked a bit scared.

"Alright then Starlight, I want you to charge forwards and use your Aerial Ace attack!"

"STAR!" Starlight replied, and she charged forwards, her wings glowing a brilliant white.

 

Ranger Jake​

Starlight's wings and beak glowed white and she flew straight for the Nincada. Unfortunately, Nincada saw it coming and tried to hidein its hole ducking at the last moment. Due to sheer speed, Starlight managed to clip it on the head, giving it a sharp cut but it was nowhere near the damage that it could have done.

Nincada peeked back out of the hole agitated at its injury and jumped out of the hole taking a defensive stance. It seemed somewhat surprised at the size of the Pokemon it was about to face but it didn't seem to care much. Its eyes expanded and contracted a bit like a camera lens.

Suddenly, it reared back on its legs and its fore legs started to glow a moss green. It jumped super quick at Starlight and slashed an X shape cut onto its chest and then jumped back ready for more.

Starlight stumbled back at the attack but didn't seem too badly hurt. This Nincada meant business.

I watched as Starlight hit Nincada, and then swooped upwards. The little bug fired the X-Scissor attack, which exploded on my lovely Staraptor. I was surprised that Starlight had actually taken so much damage, as bug moves usually weren't powerful against flying types. But the Nincada looked very serious, and I knew that I had to have it!

"I want you to use Aerial Ace again, because I don't what this little guy to faint!" I called up. Starlight nodded, and dove back down again. Her wings turned white again, and I could see the determination in her eyes. White energy began streaking around her, and Starlight tucked her wings in, allowing her to dive down a bit more and be ready to cut across Nincada. If this didn't work, I knew of some other moves to use. But Starlight had reached full power, and had gained more strength from use of the tucking-in system. The white was blinding me slightly, lighting up the Night trail and showing the fear in Nincada's eyes. Leafs were cut off a nearby tree, and I knew Starlight really wanted this, for both of us.

"Come on Starlight, you can do this!" I shouted, and watched eagerly to see what happened next

 

Ranger Jake​

Starlight swooped throught the air at top speed towards the little guy. For the first time, he looked afraid. Starlight was going so fasth that I saw some leaves sliced of a tree as she passed. She neared the small bug pokemon and sliced him sharply on the back. The small bug couldn’t handle it. The deep cuts were bleeding a bit and it swayed and then fell collapsing in a heap on the ground.

I ran over to the fainted Nincada and began to treat him with some revive and potion. He slowly opened his eyes and tittered softly. I picked him up and placed him in his hole and he scurried away.

I faced Ethan again and he looked a little flabberghasted.

“He’s okay, but since you fainted him you can’t capture him. Staraptor has a really high attack and Nincada is only a basic Pokemon. You need to use weaker moves if you’re trying to catch something.”

My eyes narrowed, and I had a big temptation to hit something. I had tried so hard to make sure Starlight did well, but it had only blown up in my face.

"Very well then, let's carry on." I moaned sadly.
