Thanks, both of you, for your replies. The system sounds like it's pretty much how I imagined it - I have no problem with a bit of favoritism, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't nigh-impossible for a newcomer to 'break in' to the group. I have seen some places where it's been too hard to get over the initial hurdle, but nothing I've seen here so far indicates it's one of those places.

Hey, I was wonderinjg just how...dark....our stories can be. Im writing one thats dark....really dark. I don't mean Ignition dark...I mean Edger Allan Poe having night terrors dark. Its not really mature, just really flippin scary.

Shoul I just put a warning in the title or something?

Oh, it's not too hard for a newcomer to break into the scene. I joined in August of 2009 and won the Winter Writing Competition in December/January/February. :D

So newbies can totally write and get into the scene! Don't ever be discouraged when it comes to writing.

Stories can be whatever you want. Mature, scary, you name it. Just put a warning in the title or before the story. :)

I also want to know if we techinicly have to "catch" the pokemon. I remember in Ignition she didnt really obtain the Houndoom so yah. Because in my story, at the end the character gets dragged down to hell by the pokemon and forced together, does that count as "catching"?

    Absolutely.
As long as you indicate to the trainer which Pokemon you're trying to catch, you are A-OK.

Nah, you don't have to do that. It's kinda traditional to, but not required.

Haha, hmm. Interesting how Seq 'n I answered differently but still said the same thing.

I'd like to ask about the setting of the stories. I mean, I've seen that there are Gym Leaders for every region imaginable, but I still feel it necessary to ask. Basically, I want to know if we have to adhere to the natural habitats of the Pokémon we want to capture when we write about how we captured it.

For example, say I wanted to catch an Aron. Would the story have to take place in Granite Cave/the Hoenn Victory Road/Fuego Ironworks? For the Fuego Ironworks setting, would I need to mention that my character has a Pokéradar to make it show up? Or is the setting unimportant, so long as the Pokémon is captured?

This is more for believability and aesthetics in the story than anything else, since there isn't a particular grade regarding the setting to my knowledge. But still, I'd like to see what people think about this before I try for my first story capture. So...opinions, plz?

We're like two synonyms in a thesaurus?
    /lame

You do NOT need to adhere to the natural habitats of the Pokemon as long as a reasonable explination is given. For example, to say that ALL SNOVER LIVE ON THE BEACH makes no sense at all. But if you say a Snover got lost and wound up on the beach, then that's perfectly fine.

Several stories out there have Pokemon living in all sorts of habitats. Horsea in Atlantis, Staryu in space, Magikarp in a desert oasis. If it's not a natural habitat, (like Aron in a cave - it also does not have to be the place you find them in the game specifically like Fuego Ironworks) just give a reason. It's your story. Do what you want. ;D

Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up. I kind of figured that was the case anyway, but I just wanted to check and make sure.

Guess I'd better get started, then...that Aron isn't going to catch itself. I think I'll try catching something easier first, though, just to make sure.

I thought Emma took that out a while back... You mean Emma lied to me? DDD:

'Kay, but other than that, no posting in people's threads. Got it, good?

Also, if Galleon thinks this isnt' too soon, I'll be doing a contest for new URPG writers: The Newbie Contest! With more preparation and dedication, hopefully, this one is better and more active than the one Carly hosted back in '07. I'll be finalizing the rules and such this week.8)

That sounds like a good idea! I'd be interested to see what everyone comes up with for it. I'd write something for it, if that's any encouragement.

Oh yeah, that's a big encouragement! The more people that participate, the more attention the Story section will get and the greater the chance the contest can be run again. Also, the more entries we get, the better the prizes will be. *nudge nudge wink wink*

By the recent reaction (there were a few more people viewing this topic in the past couple of minutes), I'd say it would be a big help for the URPG in general, and that's always a good thing. I'll be looking forward to the contest, Kat!

Hey, Galleon, can I make a "Tips For New Writers" thread?

BTW, can you add me to the list of Graders here too?

Re: URPG Stories Chat & Feedback

I don't know how much good a 'tips for new writers' thread would do; I'd love the insight and feedback, but the biggest problems so far seem to be that only half the people read what's required for the stories, and so we have 700-character posts trying to catch Hard or higher Pokemon.

And Celebi, about the Magikarp story you just posted the grade on - is it really that important that he not say it was captured? If the story hadn't merited the catch, the professor could just as easily have said 'No, you can't keep it.'

Re: URPG Stories Chat & Feedback

Yes, actually, it is. Despite the fact it was a good story, you can't say it was captured. That's for the Grader to decide only. He just needs to modify it a teensy tiny bit and then I'll give it to him.

The last bit is possible, but its situational to say the least. I'd say no, but if Galleon thinks differently, then I'll go with what he says.

Re: URPG Stories Chat & Feedback

Okay, thanks for the clarification. In that case, my own ending is questioned - instead of the rocking Pokeball that seems to be the norm, my character was asking if the Lotad wanted to join him. Should I go back and edit it to involve throwing the ball and waiting? It wouldn't quite fit the tone I'd been building up, but I could work something out if it's necessary.
